Kate Plus 8 loses more than a million viewers

Are viewers tired of watching Kate hen-peck her adorable kids to death?

The ratings are in for the second Kate Plus 8 Special "Home Roost" (a.k.a. Chicken Coop/Work Day and Kids Play). And they've taken an exciting nose dive.

Kate Plus 8 (9pm)
- 2.229 million viewers
- 1.5/3 HH
- 0.8/2 A18-49

Down from the 3.4 million it scored last month. The Next Food Network Star, Army Wives, and Entourage all did better.

Why the huge loss? Possible theories:

  • The show isn't the same without Jon being henpecked too.

  • It's fine to henpeck Jon but not so pleasant to watch the same happen to the kids.

  • Over-saturation of Kate from DWTS.

  • Kids are getting older and aren't going along with this anymore.

  • America is sick of Kate complaining how hard her lavish life is.

  • Viewers were shocked at the way Mady was treated.

Unfortunately, 2.2 million is still pretty good for a little cable network. Keep up the good work and tune out. The recaps will still be here!

(The World Cup probably had no impact on the ratings, as it was broadcast live throughout the U.S. during the early to mid-afternoon, hours before Kate Plus 8 aired.)

"I believe in this case, Jon knowing it was an outright lie, may have had some problems with it."

I don't think that had anything to do with it. This was around the time that his "relationship" with Deanna had been exposed (the beginning of May). What credibility would he have with church-goers if they had gotten wind of that?

"I think there is a difference between an evangelist/pastor, and the Gosselin's."

Well, certainly there is, but there is also a huge similarity. The "followers" of evangelists continue to give, even though they see their leader living an affluent lifestyle, traveling on private jets. They don't refuse to give the donations simply because of their wealth. They keep the money flowing because the leader asks. If they ask, it shall be done. So it was with the Gosselins. If they continue to give, every donation could be used to keep the "brand" going, with additional speaking engagements scheduled, and the word of God proclaimed throughout the land. Ditto with evangelists. It was all about spreading the word.

"Crying poor when you're just weeks away from purchasing a $1.3 million estate????"

This took place for months even AFTER the home was purchased, thus my contention that church-goers continued to give when they knew that the home was purchased.

The entire concept of collecting cash only in church is foreign to me. Churches must be accountable for where the money coming in goes.
For an event such as the Gosselin's program, I believe our church would have refused cash and asked for checks only, made out to the church or to a specific account set up by a local bank. That way our Treasurer could record who gave what (nobody else would see this ledger) and have a permanent record of the deposit into the bank. Then a check would be sent by US mail service to the Gosselins in the exact amount that was collected. (We have not entered into the credit card world yet.) Even if it took a week to record it all, every single check would be traceable and fully accounted for. It's a safety net for the church, and it protects our Treasurer as well. We would in no way try to hide it from the government. That is, in my thinking, morally and ethically the only way to handle it. I believe to accept cash only is to be an accessory to a deception.

Our denomination has very strict rules about the handling of money no matter what reason we are receiving it. I realize not all churches are under our rules, but to me, the rules make perfect sense. I really like having them in place.

I hope other churches take note of the Gosselin
story and set up protection for the very loving and generous people who open their wallets so freely when they hear a sad tale.

Thank you so much for this forum.

Admin and Not feeling the love - I'm not sure I 'get' that people should think they were struggling. Weren't they introduced to the congregation as "J&K Gosselin, from the popular reality show J&K+8?" I'm trying to imagine what my 'sense' would be if I heard that. I want to think I'd question their neediness, given the fact that they were at that point, "on TV". That would lead me to believe they have to be making some decent income. I will admit though, that I am super cautious and wary of any and everything and any and everyone. Sigh, I wasn't always this way....

Still Not Feeling the Love said...

I'm with you, Carolina Gal. My assumption at the time was that the Gosselins must be quite comfortable given the income from the show (little did I know that they were actually *rolling in it*). I had never even heard of a "love offering" before that day, so I was a bit confused by the whole thing: cash only; the apparently incessant demand for handouts even though they surely weren't "poor" any longer. None of it made sense as I watched the basket go around and people pull out their hard-earned cash to fill it up. The theater was pretty packed, and there had to be a few hundred in attendance. J&K surely pulled in a tidy little bundle that afternoon.

I honestly don't know why people contributed to the love offerings. Perhaps, as Christians, they took the words of J&K as true, since the G's laid it on pretty thickly that they were 100% devout Christians. I suppose they also could have had the same blinders on that the Sheeple sport so well. If you read any Kate fan sites, it's mind-blowing how many of the bloggers truly believe that Kate is a "Super Mom" who really does it all. They minimize the help -- or should I say STAFF -- that Kate employs, and may occasionally [grudgingly] acknowledge that she has a nanny (they’ll only accept one … and they’ll insist she is only part-time). They believe Kate cooks, cleans, takes care of the kids, runs the house, and receives no support from the deadbeat ex. They refuse to see the facts in front of their faces: The staff, the McOrphanage, the cars, the plastic surgery, shoes costing hundreds of dollars, that Kate is NOT a "single mother" (she's a divorced mom who co-parents with her ex-husband) and my favorite item they refuse to believe: That Jon pays $20,000+ in child support every month. They have a fantasy image of who Kate is, and no facts to the contrary will convince them otherwise.

I don't begrudge Kate her money or material possessions. What I do resent is the false image she and Jon constantly present in order to get more "stuff" that they have neither earned nor (IMO) deserve. They are chameleons who will change their story in order to win the support of whatever audience they're currently bilking -- even if the stories contradict one another. To the Sheeple, Kate puts on her "super mom" facade; for the Christians, she was the bible-thumping, passage-posting, Jon-converting church-goer; To fellow "celebrities" (I use that word in its lightest sense when referring to Kate), she is “one of them,” with all the accoutrements to "prove it": the estate, the expensive hair, shoes, handbags, cars, staff, special treatment at public attractions, etc. etc. The scary thing is that so many people STILL refuse to see the phoniness of it all, and continue to support this crazy narcissist in her blind pursuit of fame and fortune.

You sure don't hear Kate invoking the name of Jesus these days, do you? I bet she hasn't been to church in years. Same for Jon. Being the daughter of a preacher came in handy. She knew exactly how to act and what to say. I can she can act after all!

Absolutely. I wonder if Kate even knows who she is, which one of them she really wants to be, and how she keeps all of these personas distinct and separate.

You would be on guard; I would be on guard, as would many others. However, you have to remember that the G's played on the sympathy of the congregation, in the name of the Lord. They also allegedly told some untruths, such as the reason for Jon's getting fired; having no help; having no college funds, etc. When asked for a "love offering," that's exactly what some people are going to do, figuring out since it is sanctioned by the church, then everything is on the up and up. Human nature is a funny thing sometimes. People are sucked into schemes all the time, even when they know something is amiss and they kick themselves afterward. It's the mistake they make on the spur of the moment that makes them slap their heads later and say, "I knew better. How could I have been so dumb?"

How does anyone get scammed? Scams go on every day. Human beings like to trust other human begins. Human beings like to see the good in people and like to help people. It is amazing what humans will ignore to make things fit into their own view of the world.

Even if Kate never dropped one hint claiming she needed the little old church lady's last social security check, which is exactly what she did over and over, simply asking for a love offering, i.e. BEGGING, implies you are needy and they knew full well how that would be taken by unsuspecting Christians.

I think the group that posts here overall tends to be more skeptical people who are more unwilling than most to take things at face value. These are the same kind of people that like to do their own independent research on things, aren't easily fooled, recognizes conflicts of interest and motives better than others. It's great to be like this most of the time, downside is trust issues usually.

In the case of Kate, naturally we were right on the money. No pun intended! It WAS a scam, and the scam continues with Kate still crying she hasn't set her children for life while rolling in millions from DWTS.

For the record, I have never asked for a handout and never will as long as I have two working hands to do my own work and make my own money. Unlike Kate, I have shame.

This probably isn't the right threat to post this, but I was thinking about the cost of eggs. We're in farm country, very close to Kate. I was thinking about her when I was at the local farmer's market this week. Organic eggs were $2.35 a dozen. She says she pays four dollars a dozen and uses five dozen a week. That's twenty dollars a week. Giving her the benefit of the doubt as to what she pays for organic eggs, that's $80 a month. What does it cost to feed and care for chickens, not to mention the labor and upkeep? I know nothing about the cost of raising chickens, but would the cost of caring for chickens per month come close to, or even exceed her cost of purchasing eggs per month -- $80? How much is she actually saving?

I suppose you and Admin are right, i.e. about being unwilling to take things at face value. The above for instance, I would NEVER have believed nor fallen for "Jon was let go because they didn't want to pay for the 6 additional kids, they can do that in PA". I would have known that was against the law. As for college funds, I wouldn't have had my heartstrings tugged for that either. Millions of parents in this country don't have college taken care of for their kids. (probably many in those churches) It's things like this though, that really bother the heck outta me. Why are the sheeple this stupid and/or naive to buy into all the lies she spews? It's become a cliche, but sadly it's true, if her mouth is open, she's lying! I can't wrap my head around that for some reason! And, I'm a Christian with a strong faith.

I think that is why most people refer to the Konpound as a McMansion. Whether it technically is or not is not important. The fact that Kart lives there because it's bigger and better than her old home is why, IMHO, people often refer to it as a McMansion. I think it's more along the lines of referring to the fact that Kate is Neuvo Riche and likes to rub everyone's face in it.

Again,JMHO.

Admin, I agree with your assessment of TLC. They are not as in love with Kate as Kate thinks they are. I have mentioned several times that I think they are making a mockery of her on her show because they know the viewing audience wants to see her look positively ridiculous, and the more the better. When "we" tune in to see Kate screech, yell, wonder what went wrong, and be rude to nice people, they are not showing love for Kate. They are featuring a maniac who rakes in the dough for them.

She is TLC's sideshow barker AND main sideshow attraction all rolled into one.

I agree, Admin. It sickened me that the church actually put out money to provide a venue, and gave advance notice to the public that they'd be asked to make a donation ... but to the Gosselins -- and not to offset the church's added expenses. The church and its congregation acted in good faith, believing the Gosselin's story of poverty and struggles. And believe me, Jon and Kate played it up to the nth degree. Although, looking back, Jon barely spoke at all during the talk; it was mostly Kate. In retrospect, I think Jon had checked out, and was just there due to contractual obligations or some such thing. What shocked me the most, though, was Kate's blathering on about "the Lord" this and "the Lord" that. Given how relatively secular the show was, I was shocked to hear how EXTREMELY religious they seemed to be -- I'm talking a born-again level of Christian. Well, we all know that the Lord went the way of Beth, Jodi, Kevin, and the rest of the collatoral damage once the big bucks and better opportunities started rolling in. I'm not a religious woman in the traditional sense, but I do know about people "finding Jesus." The Gosselin's may be one of the few examples of people who actually "lost Jesus" in their blind pursuit of fame, money, and material possessions. That is, if they really ever were that religious to begin with. I wouldn't put it past them to have found a population that they knew they could manipulate into giving freely and very generously so long as they 'talked the talk.' First the Christians, now the Sheeple.

I also agree with you that all those church-goers who gave so willingly should be re-imbursed on the grounds of fraud. Crying poor when you're just weeks away from purchasing a $1.3 million estate???? Again, I'm not religious, but I think it's safe to say that Kate's handbasket is on stand-by, waiting for her descent.

Did anyone see Dr.Phil today? He's a man I really dont follow...but I did tune into his show today for "Attention seekers". The 1st couple he had on was trying to get a reality show. They are willing to let thier teenage age kids do anything even dangerous stunts to get a show...

Anyway...the dear dr. told them...its WRONG...the family wont make memories...they wont be brought closer together...the scars will remain far longer than the money and fame...he said they are EXPLOITING the kids who DONT have a choice in the matter...

So...I had to write to Phil and ask him why its ok for kate to do this to her kids...and why it was wrong for this couple to have thier kids do the same thing! They have kids they need to pay for right? WHY is it ok for kate...and not ok for anyone else...
I have yet to get a responce!

I think Kate is naive. Why would Kate leave TLC? Oh, I don't know. Because she doesn't want a corporation to run her? Because she is capable of going out and making money on her own without them now--the book deals, DWTS on a totally different network, Celeb Apprentice on yet another network? For her own dignity? For the children's dignity?

It's shocking she is staying with a network that so clearly took advantage of her for so long. They paid her very little for several years, didn't even pay the kids, while they took their millions and ran. I believe Jon quoted they made a few million over the years but TLC made over 100 million. Who is laughing last now? TLC, not Kate.

Yes, we're laughing too, because Kate is tying her entire existance to a tiny little cable network and they are making her look like a fool. Kate has no dignity or self respect. I happen to value those things, Kate apparently doesn't. All the money in the world can't buy that. Apparently with Kate though she will sell all that and more to the highest bidder, her kids included.

Talk About Naive said...

Administrator said...

I know it's been asked many times before but whatever happened to Twist of Kate?

I am sold on this idea that TLC is just stringing this woman along keeping her happy so they can film the kids as long as possible until the cost-benefit is no longer there. Even Jon said that Kate doesn't realize she's being manipulated by them.

They had a good excuse a few months ago, DWTS. Now their excuse is Kate Plus 8. I'm betting their next excuse is Celebrity Apprentice. They will continue to make excuses to put off this show until they can't anymore. At that point they will decide she is of no use to them anymore and will drop her just like that.

Really says a lot about TLC huh? Haven't thought much of them since this began but it couldn't be any plainer that they are completely using Kate. They don't care about her or helping her career with some kind of show--they want the money and the money right now is with the kids. And Kate being the unsophisticated greenhorn she is doesn't know how to stand up to them and probably doesn't even KNOW she is being used.

---

Kate is being "used" all the way to the bank. Why in the world would she "stand up" to TLC? They are her income source. I don't think she really cares if she's being "used." You can laugh at her all you want and call her an "unsophisticated greenhorn," but guess what? She's getting the last laugh.

"at that point, K cancelled the church engagements that had been scheduled, and began scheduling churches at a much higher rate than previously charged."

There were church speaking engagements, such as the one at New Life in September 2008, and Noel in November, being cancelled long before that over financial disputes.

"BTW, the last church, she spoke at, in about that time frame, the pastor received emails and letters about what he was getting into. He responded very curtly. Shortly after that, the divorce was announced"

If you are referring to the Roswell "incident," I don't believe that was the last church at which she spoke. That was at the end of March, and I think she was at churches in California in mid-April, and Michigan in May, as well as a few other scattered East Coast appearances.

I really don't believe that they held back on purchasing the new home because they were afraid that those love offerings would be extinguished, but rather, at that time the couple was not getting along, TLC knew it, and late that year rumors were flying. When the February Valentine's Day interview was conducted over the phone, and Kate's answer was, "We're not that couple," it was pretty clear that this was not a marriage made in heaven.

When the church speaking engagements ended in the spring of 2009, the couple was at odds, ready to announce the separation. How could they carry on the pretense of a perfect, Christian life together, when divorce was imminent? I think the high rates she wanted to charge may have been a factor in the demise of the speaking engagements, but it may have been just a smokescreen, and the real reason was not because of a mansion they had purchased or because they were living ostentatiously, or because she demanded limo service, but because they had, by this time, lost all credibiity as a happy couple. Churches, especially conservative ones, are funny about things like that.

One only needs to look at the lifestyles of the multi-millionaire television evangelists to see that donations do not stop because they live in estates. Guillible viewers continue to send them donations. When, however, a marriage crumbles, or the minister is caught in a compromising position with a prostitute or admits to being guilty of endulging in the pleasures of the flesh, that is when the money flow stops, viewers are lost and the enterprise collapses. Some are able to find forgiveness and bounce back, regaining the congregation's trust (and donations). Others simply slide into obscurity (or serve jail time on criminal charges).

I think the Duggars are hypocrites too. But being a hypocrite and being a child exploiter are too different things.

Kate is a hypocrite because at one time she was crying religion now she dresses like a hooker. But that has nothing to do with exploiting her kids. She may still dress like a hooker once the show is gone and that's her business, at least the kids will be off TV.

I do agree that Jon needs to be more careful regarding WHICH girlfriend he introduces to the children....and not do this until it is a fairly long-lasting relationship.

But one girlfriend doesn't come close to the numbers of people they are introduced to regularly in terms of the film crew, etc....and that doesn't even count Steve (and his family) and Jamie....though we have no idea if Kate has any relationship with either of them and all theories are speculation, IMO.

dee3 said...

Carolina Gal....I don't mean to speak for the Administrator but I think that when she says "problems with filming", she means TLC's decisions, hours/days/weeks/months/years filmed, background checks on film crew, etc.

And that the issue of allowing the children to be filmed but not to watch TV, I would track back to their religion and their parenting decisions/methods.

Now....your comment was excellent in terms of the hypocrisy.....which leads to "are they willing to exploit their own children/put their religion and beliefs aside for money?"
