Kate Plus 8 loses more than a million viewers

Are viewers tired of watching Kate hen-peck her adorable kids to death?

The ratings are in for the second Kate Plus 8 Special "Home Roost" (a.k.a. Chicken Coop/Work Day and Kids Play). And they've taken an exciting nose dive.

Kate Plus 8 (9pm)
- 2.229 million viewers
- 1.5/3 HH
- 0.8/2 A18-49

Down from the 3.4 million it scored last month. The Next Food Network Star, Army Wives, and Entourage all did better.

Why the huge loss? Possible theories:

  • The show isn't the same without Jon being henpecked too.

  • It's fine to henpeck Jon but not so pleasant to watch the same happen to the kids.

  • Over-saturation of Kate from DWTS.

  • Kids are getting older and aren't going along with this anymore.

  • America is sick of Kate complaining how hard her lavish life is.

  • Viewers were shocked at the way Mady was treated.

Unfortunately, 2.2 million is still pretty good for a little cable network. Keep up the good work and tune out. The recaps will still be here!

(The World Cup probably had no impact on the ratings, as it was broadcast live throughout the U.S. during the early to mid-afternoon, hours before Kate Plus 8 aired.)

Well I'm going to go out on a limb and say the blogs had something to do with the falling ratings.

Good job people!

The Next Food Network Star is a very NICHE show, I think it's way more niche than Kate Plus 8. And it still did better.

Basically it appeals to mostly women, women who like to cook, and women who really like the Food Network. And their boyfriends whom they make watch too. And it's not nearly as sexy of a show as say Top Chef is.

Kate probably appeals to not just women but kids of all ages as well, especially girls. Possibly appeals to fathers of multiples, some DWTS fans curious about her, some Apprentice fans curious....a lot broader audience.

I think Murt's continuing investigation is something else we could all be proud of. We didn't give up. As disgusted as it's been we never stopped caring, fighting and speaking out for those kids.

I'm proud to "know" each and every one of you!

I didn't watch and don't intend too. I just like coming here and reading some of the comments once in awhile. The woman lives in a 1.1 million dollar home and lives a lavish lifestyle but still complains. The chickens was a bad mistake for this family, they couldn't even take care of 2 dogs. Where are them poor lil doggies anyway? When I read about the poor rooster the first thing that came to my mind is, why are these people allowed animals?

I'm celebrating the good news of Rep. Murt's investigation and the decline in ratings.

However, I have a few questions:

How are the kids going to deal with Kate when the cameras are turned off and the crew goes home? Will this indeed push Kate over the edge and if so, will she take her kids with her down that dark road? (depression)

Isn't Sandy Vito the same person that wouldn't answer Murt's question about the permits? Is Murt turning to the attorney general because Vito isn't cooperating? What if TLC gets to the AG before Murt?

I used to see only two groups when it came to this woman: her fans and her detractors.

Now I think there are three groups: her fans (who seem to be dwindling in number every month), her detractors, and the people who don't like her, but who are now turning away from her and urging others to do the same.

That third group is growing, I think. I count myself in it. There comes a time when you need to say "enough." A lot of very good points have been made here about Kate's narcissism (I was raised by a narcissistic mother--you can spot them a mile away when you were "raised" by one) and TLC's craven compliance with her need for attention and money. Leaving the kids as the ultimate victims.

If we can agree that:

1. Kate is a narcissist who will keep going as long as there is an audience and money to be made and

2. TLC is just a greedy network cashing in on the trainwreck that is Kate and

3. the kids are the ones who are suffering, then

can we all agree that the best thing, the very BEST thing to do, is to COMPLETELY TURN AWAY?

I know it's sort of fun and interesting and helps a dull afternoon or evening pass more quickly to talk about Kate. God knows she gives us plenty to talk about, I mean she's a horrid mother to start.

But I urge everyone to do the best thing possible for these kids and completely remove this show, this woman, this topic from your life. The faster ANY attention ceases for this woman, the faster the ride stops. The faster these kids can get off TV for good. If what we REALLY want is for those kids to have a semi-normal life (as much as possible at this point), then we have to stop giving this woman ANY ATTENTION.

Trust me, the narcissist feeds on attention. Good, bad or ugly, as long as you are not indifferent she will thrive. My mother? HATED the idea of me getting married. Why? One simple reason: the attention would be on me and not on her. So she refused to let my dad pay for anything, refused to pay for anything herself, tried to sabotage it any way she could, then when we finally pulled it off, she sobbed LOUDLY throughout the entire ceremony, then FELL into the aisle as we were finishing. Obviously she was and is of the histrionic subtype, but I know from dealing with her that the most painful, most horrible blow you can deal them is to TURN AWAY.

I swear to you, Kate would shudder at the thought of her last 2 million viewers suddenly tuning out. It would be worse to her than almost anything else she can imagine.

So please. I'm here just to beg of anyone who will listen, drop her like a bad habit. Turn away.

Remember the Golden Girls, it was a great show with the four woman who lived together. The show went on for years with good ratings, than Bea Arthur decided not to renew her contract and whoooshhhhh she was gone. They tried to revamp it with just the other 3 but it was not the same, they even had Bea come to do a couple of guest appearances, but still the ratings failed. It was off the air the following year. Same here, not the same. They are trying to revamp this tired family but its not going to work. I say bury the show and let the kids have their lives back..end of story

Whoops, it told me that didn't post on the other thread, so I put it here.

This is much shorter----admin? If TLC or someone from TLC really checks in here (and I suspect they do), do you want to know how to REALLY upset the crap out of them?

Post about some other reality kids on another reality show.

Maybe two posts in a row that are NOT about Kate.

That would really hurt them and Kate.

It's only going to go downhill from here. The show has lost it appeal to even the sheeple, I would bet most of the viewers were more curious folks and not so much sheeple. In this current economy, her ungratefulness for all she has is untolerable. She is a disgrace to all mothers out there, put a fork in her, she is done. It is high time the G8 get the normal childhood they deserve.

There's not a hell of a lot we viewers, altho not poor, can relate to a whacko screecher w/10 workers (as I counted) doing it "all alone." (plus filming crew helpers, plus all the 'nottas' -- not a nanny, not a cook, etc.

And only an idiot wouldn't realize that in the winter the kids go to and return from school in the dark. Who's going to schlep food/water to the chickens in the dark/snow? "Bye chickens..."

Good news on two fronts today! Congrats to all who kept their vow not to watch Kate.

And to Rep. Murt, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. The eight Gosselin children have a good man on their side (as do all the children in PA who might fall victim to greedy parents wanting to exploit their children for profit).

Everyone stay vigilant and don't figure you can watch next month because the ratings have dropped. Perhaps next month we can be posting that the ratings dropped again.

The kids get home from school at 4 p.m. It doesn't get dark until 5 p.m. Even if it were dark at that time, the chickens would be kept in the barn in the winter. There is electricity in the barn, as well as landscaping lights.

Great idea! But I really don't watch any reality shows with kids in them, only an occasional glance at the Duggers.

How about this? I wish I had the Food Network on my cable package. It's not available on any level package. Think of the interesting things I'd be able to see on Sunday and Monday nights.
More interesting than anything TLC has to offer.

Anne said...

The Duggars work out just fine. Why not highlight them and having all their kids on TV, including their preemie who had to deal with all the lights and the camera crew and everyone trooping in to touch her when she was so tiny and fragile? A lot of people were talking about that--how unsafe and dumb it was for the parents to allow that!

Or this is a recent article (five pages!) from the LA Times about reality TV kids not having any sort of safety net:

http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jun/26/entertainment/la-et-reality-kids-20100627

and it DOESN'T just focus on Kate, in fact, she's only mentioned a bit. The authors spend more of their time on the kids who appear on the "real housewives of __________" series.

I always keep my ears open for other reality show news. The last thing to happen of interest was the accidental police shooting of a little girl and they were being filmed for a cop show.

The problem is I just don't see the attrocities I see with the Gosselins. The Duggars and Roloffs seem so much more concerned with protecting their kids than the Gosselins ever have. Now the Roloff kids are adults, 2 of them, and can consent to filming, which they have. They haven't walked away from it. There is no clearer message that a reality kid has been protected than when he chooses himself to continue with filming when he is of age.

I can go into a dozen reasons why these families are different than the Gosselins. And the very few questionable decisions they have made (filming Josie in the NICU) are so few and far between they are entitled to the benefit of the doubt.

Like so many others here have said, the Gosselins are not entitled to the benefit of the doubt anymore.

I can't remember one episode in the past 2 years where they didn't do something questionable.

Anne if you read the blog we DID post that article. We did.

This blog has posted about other reality news of interest when it has risen to the level of concern that we saw with the Gosselins.

But I'm not going to start picking on another family that as far as I can tell actually IS doing their best to protect their kids. This is not a witchhunt to stop reality tv. It is a concerted effort to make sure that all kids are protected, whether their parents have independently decided to protect them themselves, or not.

Administrator said...

Quite honestly other reality show parents who HAVE put their kids first could be used as an example to base laws off of.

For instance the Roloffs only film once or twice a year, it seems to be they do one round of filming during pumpkin planting, and another during pumpkin harvesting. Perhaps a law that allows only a certain number of weeks to be filmed out of the year (six, eight?) when the kids are in school. Instead of the constant rolling of film that happened day in and day out every single week for those kids.

Imagine going to school all day and you come home tired and just need to get some homework done, only to have to comply with a filming schedule first.

Anne said...

So, wait, selling your minor children's private lives for public consumption and wealth is no longer questionable? Because that's what every reality TV parent does when they enter into a show like that.

If you only want to focus on Kate, why change the name of the blog to realitytvkids?

Do you ever watch the Duggar show? There's a Duggars Without Pity site in which the commenters there routinely point out the problems with what the Duggars are doing with their kids and I'm not just talking about the "home schooling," either.

There's also this Quintuplet Surprise show now. The Haynes or Hays or however you spell it.

I'm just saying, for as much as anyone here wants Kate Gosselin to go away, giving her any attention just prolongs her stay. Focus on other reality TV kids issues with the assumption that Kate is DONE and she will be. Sooner!

Administrator said...

I think it's unrealistic to expect laws to be passed that don't allow ANY child to EVER be filmed for a reality show. That is not my mission.

What I want is for kids' hours to be limited the same as child actors are. What I want is a child advocate/set teacher on set making decisions for them. What I want is for them to keep their own money. I want these regulations for all kids on TV.

The Gosselins are the most obvious family to bring to everyone's attention because they are the ones doing the worst at protecting their kids. Other families are not perfect.

Just because the kids are pulling in some money for the family doesn't mean they are being exploited. It's a little more complicated than that. To me a kid earning money alone isn't enough to prove they are being exploited. Actually for centuries kids went out and worked and brought in money to help out the family.

The problem is when it's taken too far. When kids are FORCED to work at the expense of everything else. When parents STOP working and expect the kids to do it. When kids are forced to give up so much to make money for the family--privacy, etc. I have not seen anything like this in any other family. The Dionnes is the only thing it can be compared to. A Duggar can still walk into a store and no one would know her. Jeremy Roloff can go about his daily life without the paparazzi jumping out at him. The Gosselins don't have this life at all, their mother sold it.

The other families have other jobs besides making money off their kids. This is Kate and Jon's ONLY JOB!

PatK said...

The kids were issued "special permits", according to the statement Rep. Murt's office released. My guess is that was done to avoid the age requirement in the law; and thus, may very well be the real reason that only a few "specials" are being filmed, as opposed to the show's former full-time production.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

I read Murt's statement as "special permits" are what are issued to all children between 7 and 18.

Lauren asked what the Nielson ratings mean.
This is from Wikipedia, so take it however you want.

Begin quote:
The most commonly cited Nielsen results are reported in two measurements: ratings points and share, usually reported as: "ratings points/share". As of September 1, 2009, there are an estimated 114.9 million television households in the United States. A single national ratings point represents one percent of the total number, or 1,149,000 households for the 2009–10 season. Nielsen re-estimates the number of TV-equipped households each August for the upcoming television season.

Share is the percentage of television sets in use tuned to the program. For example, Nielsen may report a show as receiving a 9.2/15 during its broadcast, meaning that on average 9.2 percent of all television-equipped households were tuned in to that program at any given moment, while 15 percent of households watching TV were tuned into that program during this time slot. The difference between rating and share is that a rating reflects the percentage of the total population of televisions tuned to a particular program while share reflects the percentage of televisions actually in use.[2]

Because ratings are based on samples, it is possible for shows to get 0.0 share, despite having an audience; the CNBC talk show McEnroe was one notable example.[3] Another example is The CW Television Network show, CW Now, which received two 0.0 ratings in the same season.

end quote.

It also said that while there are 114.5 million TV sets in the US, but only 25,000 of them are participants in Nielson ratings. There have been many on these blogs who have tried to convince us that even if we are not Nielson families that our viewing is counted anyway since we've converted to all digital. That may not be true. Check out "Nielson ratings" at Wikipedia for yourself for more on this topic. I assume it is current, because of the reference to switch to all-digital in the past tense.

This is nothing. Wait til Twist of Kate airs. That show won't last 2 weeks. LOL

Kate loses 1 millions viewers. This after parading around in her bikini, and walking around NY sucking on a statue.

Her kids are even exploited once again on the show.

Just imagine a show with just Kate. Lame ass, over inflated, saggy face, no ass, Kate...

Who really wants to watch Kate pick up trash? I'm sure the "haters" would love to see Kate do some dirty work. But it's just a TV show. She picks up trash for 4 minutes and then talks about it for 26 minutes.

That show will TANK.

Irene S said...

The problem I have with these shows overall is what I have learned over the past months from bloggers all over.

1ST there is no difference between the Gosselins& the Duggars filming. The Duggars have child labor laws in Arkansas which require permits for the kids to work.
WE channel Masche's live in Florida...same thing no permits obtained...

See A Minor Consideration website to backup.

I agree with Admin...this industry is gonna exist. Why not have kids deemed working & not just playing & have some guidelines. A schedule of hours, set teacher, etc....
It is apparent even as Preemie babies that have recently been filmed in Baltimore that the rules are intepreted and ignored or not upheld just because the "INDUSTRY" can get away with it.

And, for these kids what about their images being used, promoted, the internet...etc?

I certainly don't have all the answers but we cannot give other shows a free pass just because it Looks not as wild/crazy as the gosselin case. There are over 200+ children doing these types of shows..it will only increase if companies can make huge profits off these kids when their parents sign their kids childhoods away.

Admin...I mean no disrespect. You have one of the top 10 blogs on this issue.

Anonymous @ 8:15:

Below is the snippet from Rep. Murt's office's statement regarding special permits (which the Gosselin children were issued) relative to minors under the age of seven, and to which I believe TLC may have used as the gray area to skirt the age requirement:

The law also authorizes the department to issue special permits for the temporary employment of minors as part of the performing cast in the production of a motion picture, but it does not specifically mention television productions.
“As I read the law, permits for children under age 7 are available for performing in a movie, but permits are not available for children under age 7 to participate in a television show,” Murt said. “I have asked the attorney general to examine the law and clarify whether the permit process provides for such performances.”
Murt added that although the law does not appear to allow for special permits for children under age 7 to appear in television productions, the Department of Labor and Industry has issued special permits for six children under age 7 involved in the production “Kate Plus 8.”

Administrator said...

Don't get me wrong I am not defending other reality shows. I think they all have something bad about them. I think kids should never be filmed but if they have to I want safeguards.

But I've never understood the comparison to Toddlers and Tiaras because I think that show is exploitive for a totally different reason than Jon/Kate.

Toddlers and Tiaras is exploitive because moms dress up their kids and put makeup on them and make them look like hookers. This will always be exploitive whether it's being filmed or not. There are lots of ways to exploit a child, one includes reality shows, another totally different way is to dress them up like hookers.

Jon and Kate is exploitive BECAUSE their kids were being filmed. BECAUSE of the filming they were being exploitive. If they weren't filming the kids would go back to being normal and wouldn't be exploited anymore. Their mother would still be crazy but the kids would have a normal life.

When the cameras go away the Tiara toddlers are still being exploited and will still do pageants.

It's sort of like comparing Jon and Kate to a documentary about the child slave trade. Is the documentary exploitive? Not exactly. It's the slave trade itself that is exploitive.

So I'm confused about the comparison.

Jibberjabbers…LOL! So true. Your post got some thoughts swirling in my mind and I think I understand why the ratings tanked and why anything Kate G. does will just as likely tank. She’s offensive – on so many levels. To so many people. In her “real” life (if there is such a thing), we see a self-indulgent, expensive holiday-taking, mansion-living, spa-going, celebrity-schmoozing, trampy clothes wearing, arrogant, spoiled brat who brays about her fears of bankruptcy. In her fake life (or is it “realest reality show” life), we see a shrieking, whining, bossy, unkind, camera-hogging, rude, spoiled brat. Who on earth could relate to this? If her target audience is honestly meant to be “single” moms who are making it as best they can, all by themselves, with no help – THIS creature is to be the role model? Honestly?? There is a whole world of REAL women who struggle every day to feed their kids – lucky if they can cook chicken for them once a week, never mind buying a whole flock of chickens as a lark. Real women who really DO change the screens on their windows, who really DO clean their houses, who really DO work as trash collectors and waitresses and cashiers and cooks. This fake POS is going to tell these REAL moms how to cook? How to organize their lives? How to relate to their children? It’s offensive – all of it. And makes a mockery of women who honestly are struggling in these difficult times – a weekly mani/pedi just a fleeting thought. A trip to Disneyworld or New York City completely unachievable. And she mocks them all…every time her screechy, mean voice is heard and her self-satisfied face is seen. We should all be outraged – and maybe we finally are. I think the truth is out…Kate has been over-exposed for the lying, acquisitive, self-centered, spoiled brat that she is. DWTS and all her vapid talk show appearances have only exposed her to a larger audience – and guess what? They’re not interested. Now why would that be?

But what about their right to privacy? They are not the same as actors. They are worse. They don't get to go home and live a private life like child actors do. They are selling their private lives, not just some talent.

I think no children should be on reality tv once they are past toddler age and they should not be shown in private moments when they are babies and toddlers, such as potty training or even going to the bathroom in their diaper in a corner, etc.

As I think of what Kate has to offer any mom in the form of advice or some role model.....ZERO! I am a mom to 5 kids ages, 21,20,17,8 and 4 and there is nothing she can advise or teach me. Even though I am married, I spent a lot of time taking care of my kids alone.....with very little to no help. My husband was a fireman and worked a part time job after he got off his fireman shift to support us, and we managed financially, although things were tight, we survived. We have always lived in small to medium sized houses, drove used cars. We have taken some nice trips when we could afford them. Our kids were always invovled in sports, activities, etc and still are. I volunteered(and still do)as much as I can. We give when we can to charity, because we know there are others worse off than us. We live a regular life, with no big luxuries, and its all good.I make a big deal out of holidays for my kids, bake, cook, give them hugs and kisses. I am organized as best as I can be. My husband and I have had tough times in our marriage, but we made it work, and I feel blessed for that. We have done so much, with much less than what Kate has, and she is still ungrateful. I have been doing what Kate does minus the meaness, for years before she showed up. I don't think Kate realizes the world of motherhood did not start with her and definitely will not end with her. Just my thoughts....

Schmecky I think no child should be on a reality show period, too. That's why so many of us here would never ever consent to such a thing.

But we're probably going to accomplish a lot more if we work WITH it rather than against it.

Reality TV is not going away. We could jump up and down about it all day but it won't go away. But what may help and has helped is to try to make it more regulated.

Heck I tend to think the entire entertainment industry has nothing to offer children. But child actors are not going away either.

If something we disagree with HAS to be, let's make it better at least.

I count at least five shooting days right there. Interesting this episode appared to be a five day shoot. Incidentally, a typical drama one-hour TV show for a major network is filmed over a period of five days.

Looks like the Queen of Privacy dragged her children outside for a little picnic in front of the garage today:

It's really sad that there is no place else on that vast acreage to sit down and have a picnic with your children. And it also looks like no one was particularly happy to be plopped down for Mommy's photo op, including Mommy. Which just begs the question - why?

I agree with Admin's comments regarding the difference between the Gosselins and other reality TV families. I too have tried to figure out why I have such contempt for the Gosselins for allowing their children to be filmed yet not have any concern for other reality families.

The biggest distinction between the Gosselins and other reality tv families is what their lives truly are WITHOUT cameras around. In every other show you see extended family, close friends, social activities the kids would participate in even without cameras. The Gosselin kids have a very small, narrow world without the support of extended family & friends to create a buffer or safe haven. And most especially they have NO ONE to step in and give their parents a well-needed reality check. All they have 'protecting' them are two self-centered parents and TLC-paid employees whose main concern is their own self interests. And THAT right there is what bothers me most.

We can't shut down reality shows that film kids but we sure as heck can help get laws changed that WILL, I would hope, benefit the Gosselin kids and prevent any other parents from jumping on the J&K child labor train.

Admin- You're right about the comparison with Toddlers and Tiaras, except that if it weren't on tv, TLC would not be able to make money off the pageant circuit, and IMO they are colluding in perpetuating this travesty and possibly creating more pageant mothers and kiddies by their exposure.
I feel the same disgust about that show as I feel for Kate + 8, but for different reasons.

Does this mean Kate loses her pap photo sponsors: Target, UPS and BEd Bath & Beyond? They are a bit monotonous, always Kate, the black bodyguard and one kid hauled out into the store parking lot so Chris can take their pics and file them with the tabloids. However will Kate manage without these gift cards?

This is old news, but I finally saw some of the pictures of Kate sucking on the lollipop. In the background was Steve. I totally believe the lollipop "show" was for Steve, teasing him. Sucking on that lollipop and walking barefoot in her skimpy outfit reminds me of the cartoon, Li'l Abner by Al Capp, --- she's Daisy Mae of Dogpatch.

In all honesty (as Kate would say) I think the reason people are tuning out is that the show is boring.

Chicken coop? Another trip? Watch me walk down the street. Watch me yell at my kids. Oh, it's time for me to complain again, then I'll do a little aside, snarky comment to someone off camera. Then I'll laugh. Aren't I funny? I'm thinking about writng a book/doing voiceovers/being in a movie. I'll say it because TLC needs to gauge the public's reaction before they throw WASTE more money on me. Time to complain again. Oh, now I'll insult my children's father. Time to cackle.

My opinion regarding the drop in ratings is boredom. The show had jumped the shark some time ago but there were enough watching for the train-wreck factor to keep it around 3 million. But lately, Jon has stayed out of the headlines for the most part and Kate's histrionics are getting tiresome because they never change. Nothing really news-worthy is happening....and then they have chickens and power-washing? Yawn. Even the most avid train-wreck watchers have a hard time sitting through chickens and power-washing.
I also tend to agree with the Administrator regarding putting other reality shows with children in them in the same category as the Gosselin children's shows. I have never had the severe worry for most of the other children as I have for the G. children...well, maybe Toddlers and Tiaras a bit. But big factors are how often they are filmed/hours filmed, do the parents show love for them and concern for them and for their future, etc. Plus, those families are intact...not dealing with a recent divorce.
And as far as the Duggars go...a great deal of controversy surrounds their religious beliefs and how they raise their children due to them....and this would be a more personal issue as compared to the exploitation issue, IMO. Parents are entitled/allowed to raise their own children in their religion of choice, as long as there is no serious abuse going on....and this is unlikely to change.
(splitting due to length)

dee3 said...

(Cont.)
To be honest, due to Kate being a textbook picture of narcissism (which I can find fascinating on an objective level) plus the "campy" element of watching such over-the-top behavior, I COULD have stayed-tuned much longer....IF there had been NO children involved. That would be until I tired of it, like I did with Nancy Grace. But I have to say that if the shows became really boring, with nothing interesting going on....I'd have tuned out more quickly.

I believe the milestones in this debacle were first, the rumors of cheating and the divorce, which lost them a significant percentage of their religious Christian fan base. Then came the Rep. Murt hearings and conclusions...and I truly did see a definite swing in the dynamic shortly after that. I truly have come to believe that a significant portion of the population are followers and will go with whatever seems to be the winning side (even if they don't know what the controversy is)....and the Rep. Murt hearings showed a person of consequence, a government official, putting this in quite a negative light....and then the mags and the talk-show hosts quickly jumped ship and switched sides.
And NOW....it's just become boring. SHE has become boring. She's a one-dimensional narcissist...it's the only behavior we see...over and over and over.
And yes, the children are adorable but they are growing up and there is no sweet, touchy-feeling family dynamic happening, which would make watching the show more enjoyable.

Like I said...I expected the ratings to drop but not to drop this much so quickly. I'm really interested to see what happens regarding future ratings of not only this show but also Twist of Kate, which I predict will be quite an abysmal failure (but who knows? I could be wrong). This whole debacle has been a fascinating chapter of "The Emperor with no clothes", I have to admit.

Anonymous said...

The drop in ratings reminds me of the final season of Jon and Kate Plus 8. The ratings fell dramatically after the "big announcement" fiasco. Seems to me there's a pattern here. As much as Kate would HATE to admit it, the less Jon was on J&K+8, the less viewers tuned in. Same goes for Kate Plus 8. The show is boring without Jon and Kate's dynamic (however sick it became).

Administrator said...

That's the difference with the Duggars. I watched this show for awhile. With the exception of filming Josie in the NICU, I never saw anything else where I had concerns about FILMING.

The problems people have with the Duggars have very little to do with filming. It has to do with their controversial religious beliefs, the way some people think the older kids are raising the younger ones, the blanket training rumors, etc. When the filming goes away, the Duggars will still be raising their family this way. I am not hearing that the kids are missing school for filming, the kids are filming constantly, the kids are covering their eyes, the kids can't step outside without paparazzi attacking them.

This is a case where a family IS allowed to raise their kids as they see fit. Laws ARE in place to protect their kids, called child abuse laws. Laws are not in place to stop Kate yet.

I may disagree when Kate puts too many chickens in a chicken coop or takes an Amish man's hat, but that is not why I have a problem with this show. The main issue is the exploitation of her kids--the constant filming, the paparazzi, the kids covering their eyes, the public divorce and dragging their father through the mud, Jon taking his hush money, books written all about their private feelings. It's all so disgusting and there is no law to stop it.

I don't know why this difference is so hard for people to understand. When the filming stops the exploitation stops for the Gosselins. When the filming stops for other families, it doesn't change that beauty pageants are continuing and the Duggars are conservative.

Toddlers and tiaras--people have a problem with beauty pageants. Duggars--people have a problem with their religions. Gosselins--the exploitation due to FILMING is the problem.

Once again I think there should be filming laws for ALL reality kids. I just have yet to see an example of taking advantage of the weak laws better than the Gosselins.

On one episode when she took the kids for a mile hike over to her neighbors she said that the farmer who owned the cows would come over and cut her 24 acres and maintain the area, she said she was a farm girl but didn't have to do the work. Do ya really think she is going to take care of them chicks? I say they will be chicken stew by fall and that will be the end of them eggs. LMAO

I would say I would hope that people here would not want to watch the show even if Jon was on it. I really don't think it would be a good idea for Jon to go back into Kate's world on TV. I also don't think Kate would allow that or appreciate any competitionon her show. I am so glad the ratings have gone down on this show.

dee3 said...

Anon...I agree that a huge factor was Jon leaving the show.
It can be rather difficult for me to be objective...because while I wanted it to be a sweet family show, I was totally turned off immediately by Kate's shrew-like behavior, harping, belittling and (possible) abusiveness. BUT, there were plenty who found that entertaining and stayed tuned for that reason...and that is one thing I cannot relate to at all. I can't really understand it.

I have to say that while reading on the internet...the pro-Kate comments after articles, etc...seem to be very zealous and rabid, whereas there used to be commenters who just didn't really realize what was going on and still thought it was a nice show, etc...so defended it. But those types seem to have disappeared. Only the rabid ones remain so I have to theorize that almost everyone with critical thinking skills is no longer defending her.

However there do seem to be quite a few non-defenders who continue to watch....and I think that in the digital cable age...every single viewer counts (even including taping it and watching it later) and the Nielsen ratings are a thing of the past. Non fans need to stop watching and simply read the Administrator's recaps.....which quite frankly, seem much better and more interesting than the actual shows.

It upsets me to see so many who care about the plight of the children still watching (therefore contributing to them remaining on TV). EVERYONE counts.

What did the producers of Kate+8 have to show?
They chose Kate squealing in 4 different situations. That was their "pull"? Squealing?

I would guess the TV viewing audience thought
if that was the best of the show, the "draw", then how ridiculous and juvenile is the rest of it? No thanks. I'll watch the birds go to bed.

As far as the "bloody" rooster, did anybody see it, or for that matter the blood? I didn't.
It was part of the script written by the most talented writers that TLC could hire.Yeah sure.
Any idiot could write this crap...and did!

Mama Duke said...

Well Judy your so right about the friend (neighbor) owning them chickens and just putting them out their for some cash. As for anything she does like putting her kids in dance lessons, taking piano lessons, cooking classes, it was all scripted by TLCs low paying interns to make a show. I have yet seen them kids play a tune on that free piano they recieved or take a dance step after those epsisodes were done. Its all been about her and making her kids think its just playing when in actuality its working to bring home a paycheck for MOMMY DEAREST so she can afford those mini pedis/tanning sessions. Hope they pull those work permits from those children and make them two losers of parents find real jobs.

My prediction for what happens next: We start seeing Kate out on "dates" with someone, then we start seeing Jon around Kate & the kids. Then we start seeing them do things as a family again, and the next thing ya know it'll be Jon & Kate out alone together.

There will be a "reconciliation" which will probably lead to yet another vow renewal in an exotic location, and at least 2 books - one by Jon & Kate together describing how they fell back in love with each other, and one by Kate alone geared towards women who are struggling in their marriages and/or separated from their husbands. I guess there could be 3 books as Jon supposedly already has one in the works on "leadership" skills...that makes me laugh every time I think of it.

My favorite part with the rooster was watching the "Kate who takes care of 26 acres of land all by herself" which now includes chickens...turn to (Steve?) and say someone take care of this, this is bad, please someone do something about it...Yep, way to take care of it all on your own!

Mr Ed said...

Didn't the kids call attention to the bloody rooster by saying, "There's blood!" to which Kate took a look and reacted? Are the kids talented actresses/actors and were told to act surprised, natural, and follow the script? Did they do a good job?

I personally don't have a problem with beauty pagents, if the contestants are 16 and up. But I feel it is exploitation to dress up a 6 year old to look like a 20+ year old and many of those girls don't want to do it..it is their mothers making them!

dee3 said...

As I understand it, it does not specifically say that reality TV children must be at least 7 years old but refers to all entertainment prior to the era of reality TV. Therefore Rep. Murt has contacted the AG to clarify this.....and if it's too vague, to change how it's written TO clarify it.

So there is very little likelihood that anyone is going to get into any serious trouble over this...because that requirement was not written specifically for under-aged reality TV participants.

Okay, I gave in and watched this today on YouTube. Administrator, you did a fine job of recaps, but you were TOO KIND. I think even less of Kate now than I did before, and I didn't think that was possible. I don't even want to know what she is like without the cameras. She's just plain hateful--and LAZY. And I find it incredible that after all the previews of her showing her coochy on top of the house in that short skirt and after us talking about it, the scenes were pulled. If you are going to do reality t.v. TLC, then do it and don't script it. I have never heard any child say to their parent, "We are so appreciative of the nice things you do for us." Get real. We are all so onto Kate and TLC, and don't tell me those kids are not/were not working. Kate did not and never will lift a finger on the chicken coop which was fabricated simply to make an episode.

The problem with the show is that it's not entertaining. It's just bad TV. In addition, it's not believable. You want to learn home improvement, you watch the show on PBS, not this drivel. Who in their right mind believes that you can get a couple of chickens and be cooking eggs the next day? It just doesn't make sense. If she plants some garden vegtables does she expect us to believe that you can make a garden salad the next day?

I don't watch either, but my two cents on the "irony" is not hen-pecked Jon but that Katie is the hen that laid the golden eggs.

BTW, anybody else think Katie is steaming that the Harrisons and Chumly are the highest rated reality show and the Hillstrands are doing commercials?

BTW, did anyone read or hear anything about Ellen giving an interview and then posting on some blog(s). BM has a long diatribe about it...I've copied and pasted it in 2 sections, it's very long.....

Part 1.
"Good afternoon everyone! Today I got an e-mail from someone asking me how I felt about Ellen giving interviews out to blogs. I didn't wish to discuss it here simply because I didn't agree with it. (Please keep in mind that I do not discuss any other Gosselin related sites here except the hate sites out of respect for those blogs)

It's one thing to score a Jon or Kate Gosselin interview.(And don't think I wasnt chompin at the bit to interview Hailey, who would have been an amazing read.) And so far almost all of Jon's women have cased in at some point except perhaps Morgan & Deanna, though her brother pretty much took care of that..

But now we have Ellen. She lives the closest to Jon and what seemed like in seconds was Jons new love/nanny. In 2 months he already had her name tattoo'd on his back. She was already making sure she was photographed with the kids. But I didn't have a problem with it until NOW. I do not feel that she should have taken to the blogs. I feel she does not have the right to put the childrens lives out there to discuss. She has now not only done an interview (why?) but now was commenting on blogs! She has since realized what a mistake that was and how horribly inappropriate it was. And has since asked said site to remove her comments.

So now I was sent a blurb or part of a comments she has been writing to people. What do you think? Do you feel Ellen has the right to give interviews and post comments on sites relating to her boyfirend and his ex-wife? Should she be commenting on his children? Some of Ellen's comment"

"yes you are right. the jon from last year is different from the jon this year. when people get out of a marriage, they find themselves again and some people go through hell doing so. he has made major improvements. i also want to point out. i am NEVER on my phone with the kids unless its ringing and its my mom or its my family texting me . the ONLY pictures the websites put up are ones of us on our phones. how boring would it be to put up a pic of me and jon watching the kids? its boring, theres nothing to criticize (although people still would fine SOMETHING) therefore the website wont get enough hits on that article and it loses its value.. THATS why they put those pics up……
i was so upset because the ONLY time during the whole 3 hours we were there was when a family member texted me and said that someone was tweeting about us being at the game….. this way i knew it was spreading, then we can be extra careful with the kids and getting them to the van quickly when we leave. im so upset and angry EVERYTIME pics are taken of us because they ALWAYS make it look like im on my phone. in the pics of me at the bus stop with jon, and im “looking at my phone” i actually took it out of my pocket for ONE SECOND to look at the time (thats why im jsut staring at the phone) and then put it away, bc the kids bus was late, they werent even there yet. but god forbid the websites put up the pics of the kids happy to see me or smiling at me or hugging me, GOD FORBID.

and as for the last comment…about him respecting the mother of his kids.. if ONLY you guys knew …….. i look at it froma neutral point of view..until certain things came out.. remember this.. kids arent stupid, they see things, they get treated certain ways and THEY TALK…..
and i do see how he treated his women before. ppl that make claims of being with him, they get PAID for it. yes there was hailey, but unfortunately it was a bad choice for him, she was not the kind of person he needed in his life and it caused a lot of drama, thats in the past, we all mess up, lets move on and stop dwelling on it… his last relationshpi with morgan was just fine………. just certain peopel arent meant for other people. please please please dont take sides anymore, im telling you stay neutral..eventually the truth comes out..when those kids are old enough to understand all this crap… you just wait….. the things they are going to say…….

im sorry but im not going to be on here anymore. i vowed to myself never ever to read these comments bc ppls judgements arent real to me because people dont know jon unless they know him personally, same with kate. you guys dont know kate or jon on a personal level OR the kids…. im not for or against anyone, i just see things how they are. but i cant get on here and waste time defending myself and jon and kate and the kids and whoever, because at the end of the day, no one cares, they just want something to talk about i guess"

Carolina Girl, so HOW is this girl supposed to defend herself from all the nasty postings from bloggers who know NOTHING about her? If you were in her shoes, how might you feel? She is a young woman who didn't ask for negative press, it came with the relationship.

What I'm reading is a young woman trying to defend herself from bloggers who are constantly bashing her and her relationship with Jon. Yes, of course she should have left Kate's name out of the conversation BUT it's NOT a mystery. EVERYONE is waiting for the kids to be old enough to write a book about the TRUTH BEHIND this WHOLE fiasco!

When a child has to calm their parent down. There's a problem.

When a child has to compliment their parent excessively so Mommy feels good. There's a problem.

When a child is AFRAID to be spontaneous while playing with a toy truck while Mommy is present. There's a problem.

When a child sits silently with a look of fright because Mommy is ranting, "...I'm being Mommyed to death!" THERE IS A PROBLEM!

Are you presenting anything new about Jon & Ellen or Katie that the viewers/bloggers didn't ALREADY know or have speculated about? Nah, we've seen it ALL in interviews, photos, episodes. It's NOT mystery.

Speculating. Jon was banished from the house because Katie saw pictures of Ellen with the kids hanging all over Ellen in the driveway. How do you think Katie was feeling?

I think Ellen is too new in her relationship with Jon to be making public comments. However, I thought her comments were fair, though not appropriate. It sounds as though she realizes she made a mistake and has had the comments removed. I think she's a good girl, and I think she probably already knows the truth, although she shouldn't be commenting on it.

I don't know why this difference is so hard for people to understand. When the filming stops the exploitation stops for the Gosselins. When the filming stops for other families, it doesn't change that beauty pageants are continuing and the Duggars are conservative.

In my opinion, it's COMPLETELY inappropriate that the children have been introduced to ANYONE Jon has "dated." Those kids have enough people bouncing in and out of their lives. He shouldn't introduce anyone until he has a reasonable expectation of their permanence in his & the kids lives.

dee3 said...

Carolina Gal....I don't mean to speak for the Administrator but I think that when she says "problems with filming", she means TLC's decisions, hours/days/weeks/months/years filmed, background checks on film crew, etc.

And that the issue of allowing the children to be filmed but not to watch TV, I would track back to their religion and their parenting decisions/methods.

Now....your comment was excellent in terms of the hypocrisy.....which leads to "are they willing to exploit their own children/put their religion and beliefs aside for money?"

Bubbles said...

melissa f, I agree with your point - Kate also has too many people in and out of the kids' lives. I think that is inappropriate along with Jon introducing his flavor of the month to them.

The comment that really 'drew' my attention was she stated (again, paraphrased) the kids live with things (Kate?) and they talk. IF Kate knew that she made that statement, that could have been why Jon was banned from the house.

BTW, K&J reconciling, hey, if Bristol and Levi can reconcile, I guess the G's might 'give it a try'. Who knows, it will be interesting to see though just what Kate/TLC will do to try and infuse some interest back into the show. But, I'd like to know WHY TLC cares? Why not just drop it if it loses viewers, but they won't. I still think Kate has something on TLC that keeps them supporting her?????

dee3 said...

I do agree that Jon needs to be more careful regarding WHICH girlfriend he introduces to the children....and not do this until it is a fairly long-lasting relationship.

But one girlfriend doesn't come close to the numbers of people they are introduced to regularly in terms of the film crew, etc....and that doesn't even count Steve (and his family) and Jamie....though we have no idea if Kate has any relationship with either of them and all theories are speculation, IMO.

Bubbles said...

Carolina Gal, the Duggars have said they want to be an "encouragement" to others, which is why they agreed to the TV show. In my opinion it is not hypocritical, because they are not saying TV is bad or saying people shouldn't watch TV, they are only saying that they have personally made a choice not to have much TV viewing in their home. From things they have said, they do watch some movies and programming that they consider to be appropriate for their family.

I have not seen any evidence of the Duggars ever trying to tell someone what to do or not to do. All I've ever seen is them explaining what their choices are and why they've made those choices. (This doesn't mean it hasn't happened, maybe it has, I'm just saying that I personally have not seen it.)

*****

My opinion is that the Duggers are trying to show the JOY of large families, and maybe are
subliminally trying to encourage others to consider having more. They seem happy, genuinely happy to me. The girls share home responsibilities, including childcare, because Michelle and Jim Bob want them to have life skills that center around the home. That is their personal value system. The boys learn early how to do traditional "boy" chores. There was an episode where they switched roles, and I bet they do that more often than just one time.
I think Jim Bob and Michelle want their boys to know how to cook, clean, care for children, and the girls to be self sufficient around the house and yard and machines. Above all, I think they want all their children to be good PARENTS. JB and Michelle clearly enjoy it and
I think they want to share their way of life with anybody who wants to tune in to watch. Yes they get a paycheck. A good one. But I think sharing the joy of being a huge family is their primary concern. I really do.

I fully understand fame and fortune can change people for the worse. I just don't see too much of that with the Duggers - at this point, anyway.

Michelle has said many times that when they become adults the kids may choose to go a different route. She said "that's fine". She is raising them her way, but realizes they have minds and plans of their own. They will not be shunned if they wander in their own direction. They have very deep roots and she will let them plot their own course. I think that's commendable.

Administrator said...

I've seen the Duggars but I don't watch anymore. I watch Little People. I haven't seen Toddlers and Tiaras.

The problem is one person can't possibly keep up with every child exploitation issue there may or may not be out there, watch every reality show out there that has minors, and post them all on a blog. What I have seen of those shows did not concern me. Just because you film kids doesn't mean they are automatically exploited, that's my opinion. Others disagree. I don't think the Roloffs have exploited their kids whatsoever. I think that show has been 99 percent good in letting the public see a NORMAL family that happens to have little people in it, and showing that like they say in their credits little people (and really translates to any "disability") can do anything just in a different way. They are an example of making a true documentary, not a child exploitation show. Half their kids are old enough to consent to filming as they have been adults for some time now. I know there are other blogs out there discussing these shows that cover any issues adequately.

Face it, the Gosselins have stuck out because of the repeated, relentless exploitation. If we're accused of being only about Kate and not concerned about other shows, so be it. But do they ever stop to think WHY Kate keeps coming up over and over? They claim it's because we like to hate. I can think of many other public figures to hate on if we like to hate. Whether they want to believe it or not, we're concerned about her kids.

The blog name is realitytvkids. The Gosselin kids are reality kids and I said before if interest in them fades I wanted a blog name where we could still discuss the issue because I never want to see another family do this to their kids.

No one is telling me anything relevant going on right now with the other shows that is worth doing a post on. Are the Duggars being investigated? Is there some safety issue on set I don't know about? Are paparazzi jumping out at them? Somebody posted an old link to an old article that I posted right here the day it came out. I do pust stuff as I see fit as I see relevant. I also posted about the child who was shot by the cops on a reality show, and balloon boy.

This blog tries to stay timely. If things come up I think are relevant I will post. But this Blog started off about the Gosselins and our niche is still the Gosselins and the stamp they are putting on the issue of reality TV. This is MY area of interest, I am just not as interested in picking on families who I perceive as nice families with their kids' best interests at heart. Prove me wrong. I think you start grasping at every little straw and it becomes confusing and disorganized when you make your blog topic too broad.

dee3 said...

Carolina Gal.....I think that all TLC cares about is the ratings and resulting advertising dollars. If they can't get the ratings, they will likely drop the show.

Now this is just my personal opinion, my my sense (and gut feeling) is that Jon and Kate would NEVER reunite....not in a million years. But like I said, that's just me.

dee3 said...

I think I may have to back Carolina Gal to some degree. I think that if the Duggars had done one documentary....to show the world their religion and lifestyle...it would be one thing. But to be a regular TV show does hint at hypocrisy to me. If you want to project a very simple and uncontaminated lifestyle secondary to your religion, why would you want the entertainment industry, film crew, recognition in magazines, etc. in your life and in your children's lives on a regular basis? My gut feeling is that there is some hypocrisy at play with their situation.

Administrator said...

I think the Duggars are hypocrites too. But being a hypocrite and being a child exploiter are too different things.

Kate is a hypocrite because at one time she was crying religion now she dresses like a hooker. But that has nothing to do with exploiting her kids. She may still dress like a hooker once the show is gone and that's her business, at least the kids will be off TV.

Hehe....I truly believe that Jon would NEVER go back to Kate. I also don't think that the people who watch the show would buy it. And too much has happened to get most of the religious Christian watchers. Maybe a few but not in large numbers. I tend to think the whole concept would end up being a big bomb.

LisaNH said...

I have only seen a handful of Duggar shows, but the thing that struck me about this family is what they do for others. When I used to watch J&K I always wondered why they never offered assistance to others, it was always what others could do for them. Where as with the Duggars, the few eps I saw they were always either helping someone in their community or going to Central or South America to help people down there.

The same goes for Little People. The eps of their show I've seen they've helped others through charity or when Matt went to Iraq to help the little boy there.

I guess my point is that on some level, these two families seem to use their celebrity to help others while J&K have used theirs for their own selfish purposes (tanning, nails, hair, clothing etc...). When TLC did force them to do something for others i.e. the yard sale, all Kate did was moan, complain and act ugly.

Isn't that odd? I thought doing for others was supposed to bring out the best in people and make them feel good.

Carol said...

If you really want this woman to go away STOP PAYING ATTENTION TO HER.

It's really that simple! You want to really get to Kate?

Then IGNORE HER. It is her greatest fear. Even TLC doesn't fear it as much as she does, because they have plenty of other shows. They've got a big blurb on their website about trying to find new people for new shows! They don't give a warm crap. But for Kate? It would be the end of the line.

Want to get those kids off TV faster? STOP GIVING THE SHOW ANY ATTENTION.

I'm reading a heck of a lot of justification for continuing to give this vile excuse of a mother attention on this blog. There's no justification. If you're concerned, write letters and call Rep. Murt's office.

The Ellen interview is on IW. Some real funny comments that are IMO, off the walls hysteria and some other comments that were resonable measured and polite. Ellen I guess, at some point later made some comments on the blog herself and then was regretful for doing so as she was posting off the cuff from her phone. That blog does not have the feature that allows a commenter to delete their comment so she requested that the mods delete, which they respectfully did. THEN, some of hysteria wild maniacs from another blog cut & pasted back to where they live all the comments that Ellen had requested be deleted and that the moderators at IW had provided an explanation and deletion.

I am sold on this idea that TLC is just stringing this woman along keeping her happy so they can film the kids as long as possible until the cost-benefit is no longer there. Even Jon said that Kate doesn't realize she's being manipulated by them.

They had a good excuse a few months ago, DWTS. Now their excuse is Kate Plus 8. I'm betting their next excuse is Celebrity Apprentice. They will continue to make excuses to put off this show until they can't anymore. At that point they will decide she is of no use to them anymore and will drop her just like that.

Really says a lot about TLC huh? Haven't thought much of them since this began but it couldn't be any plainer that they are completely using Kate. They don't care about her or helping her career with some kind of show--they want the money and the money right now is with the kids. And Kate being the unsophisticated greenhorn she is doesn't know how to stand up to them and probably doesn't even KNOW she is being used.

Kate is being "used" all the way to the bank. Why in the world would she "stand up" to TLC? They are her income source. I don't think she really cares if she's being "used." You can laugh at her all you want and call her an "unsophisticated greenhorn," but guess what? She's getting the last laugh.

Administrator said...

I think Kate is naive. Why would Kate leave TLC? Oh, I don't know. Because she doesn't want a corporation to run her? Because she is capable of going out and making money on her own without them now--the book deals, DWTS on a totally different network, Celeb Apprentice on yet another network? For her own dignity? For the children's dignity?

It's shocking she is staying with a network that so clearly took advantage of her for so long. They paid her very little for several years, didn't even pay the kids, while they took their millions and ran. I believe Jon quoted they made a few million over the years but TLC made over 100 million. Who is laughing last now? TLC, not Kate.

Yes, we're laughing too, because Kate is tying her entire existance to a tiny little cable network and they are making her look like a fool. Kate has no dignity or self respect. I happen to value those things, Kate apparently doesn't. All the money in the world can't buy that. Apparently with Kate though she will sell all that and more to the highest bidder, her kids included.

I have been OR did watch the Go$$elins from the start.I havent watched and will NOT watch anything with kate or the kids...not since they went off air last year...

Did anyone see Dr.Phil today? He's a man I really dont follow...but I did tune into his show today for "Attention seekers". The 1st couple he had on was trying to get a reality show.They are willing to let thier teenage age kids do anything even dangerous stunts to get a show...

Anyway...the dear dr. told them...its WRONG...the family wont make memories...they wont be brought closer together...the scars will remain far longer than the money and fame...he said they are EXPLOITING the kids who DONT have a choice in the matter...

So...I had to write to Phil and ask him why its ok for kate to do this to her kids...and why it was wrong for this couple to have thier kids do the same thing!They have kids they need to pay for right? WHY is it ok for kate...and not ok for anyone else...
I have yet to get a responce!

I tend to agree with the Administrator regarding Kate being used by TLC...although I can understand why many would be skeptical. Nothing has seemed logical about this situation for years. People can't figure out what's real and what's fake.

A poster here asked why would Kate stand up to TLC? In my opinion, a sane, rational and intelligent person would 1) acknowledge that the children are the main draw, 2) that celebrity is fleeting and 3) that they should make the best logical deals with TLC in terms of the future earning potential.

But Kate's narcissism makes her fairly sure that the draw is herself and she believes that anything she is in will be a big success and has very high expectations and confidence that this will last for a very long time. The reality is that it can be very easy to take advantage of narcissists due to their vanity and over-confidence. Just tell them what they want to hear.

Pet peeve alert...please stop referring to Kate's 'mine all mine' as a 'McMansion'.
From urbandictionary.com
"A large and pretentious house, typically of shoddy construction, typical of "upscale" suburban developments in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Such houses are characterized by steep roofs of complex design, theatrical entrances, lack of stylistic integrity and backsides which are notably less fussy than their fronts. They are often placed closely together to maximize the developer's profits and appeal to people who value perceived social status over actual, physical, economic or historic value."

See http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=mcmansion
for alternate definitions, none of which apply to Gosselin konpound.

The Kate lovers are trying to make Ellen apologize for saying the kids talk about how Kate treats them. I bet they do. I bet they complain that they have to walk on eggshells around her, that she is angry, bitter, unhappy, upset, that she berates them constantly and makes snide comments about their dad, that she won't let them see friends and family and is constantly cutting people out of their lives, that she spends very little time with them, she is only good for yelling and screaming and bossing and complaining, that she tells them how lonely she is and how much she gives up of herself for them, and goes on and on about the sacrifices she makes, how she pitches fits if their clothes get dirty or rooms get messy and is never happy or content, is unwilling to just read a book or play a game with them, is always on her phone or computer checking out the show's ratings, her ratings.... yes, I think the kids are saying pretty much all of the above, one doesn't have to be an insider to see it. Ellen, if you are reading, please feel free to thumbs up.

What hypocrites. I think Kate should apologize then for ever telling us anything about her kids and how they feel.

She should especially apologize for her latest book revealing all those intimate details of their reactions to the divorce.

I find it awfully interesting that even though this book just came out all of a sudden it's not talked about anymore by Kate or TLC. They did just one booksigning then disappeared. I think they are backpeddaling like crazy from the negative reaction it got.

I posted this idea elsewhere but I wonder if anyone here thinks that TLC is purposely giving Kate scenarios that will cause her to become more agitated, upset and therefore "crazier", and then filming the subsequent meltdowns for our "entertainment"?

The chicken coop episode had it all; lots of men around, an activity that Kate couldn't really control;a hot day; household maintenance tasks that were obviously beyond her ability to cope;dirty, messy animals....

They also seem to have stopped advising her on her appearance and are letting her choose her own clothing, or they are encouraging her to dress inappropriately.

I wouldn't put it past TLC to think that watching this woman disintegrate in front of the cameras makes for good, "authentic" reality television.

Human behavior can be so interesting. For several years, we non-fans couldn't understand why TLC was getting a pass for the child exploitation issues...in the press, on TV, etc. It was extremely frustrating, in fact.
Yet suddenly, the tide has turned and it's all over the media. Why did they suddenly jump ship?

I've said this before but people are often very influenced by what a person of consequence (like a politician) says...even if it's the opposite of what they thought they were thinking.
This would be especially true for those who never really watched the show all that much and just jumped on the bandwagon....interviewers on TV, people who commented on blogs, etc. There was, for instance, that article where the female author claimed that the entire brouhaha was over whether a woman should work or stay home with her children...way off base and she clearly had not watched the show...at all or very much.

It's like "oh, this is GREAT!"..."Whoopsie! A politician has made some major headlines over child exploitation issues....better switch sides and go with what is becoming the more popular side"

But I will NEVER understand how so many in the media gave the filming of the children on the potty, what was IN the potty, the dis-impaction...a total pass...and for SO long.

And for those who say that the dis-impaction scenes were no big deal because we could only see Jon's back.......if you think that's fine, go and put your own child's dis-impaction on TV and on Youtube......and see how much crap (intentional) your child has to deal with as he/she gets older...even if it was only inferred. Just because it wasn't shown in detail does not mean everyone who watched didn't know what was happening.

I believe that as long as the money is coming in Kate will be used by whoever, whenever and for whatever in order to keep up with the lifestyle that she has made herself accustomed to. She doesn't seem to care about how it may affect her kids now or down the road. If she truly loved her kids she should get herself an education to go into a job that is suited to her and her type of personality so that she can support her kids, not the other way around. Using the kids to support her lifestyle because she has nothing to offer in terms of talent and she is only famous for having 2 sets of multiples. She will eventually she will fade from the spotlight and will need to fall back onto something outside of the media. Before I am accused of being a hater, Jon also should do the same and stop acting like a young 20 something year old man he really needs to grow up and remember that he has children to support not use them as a paycheque to support his lifestyle either. I am fell so sorry for those children as they are going to be so messed up and will probably hate both parents. Neither one is looking out for their interests

Admin, I agree with your assessment of TLC. They are not as in love with Kate as Kate thinks they are. I have mentioned several times that I think they are making a mockery of her on her show because they know the viewing audience wants to see her look positively ridiculous, and the more the better. When "we" tune in to see Kate screech, yell, wonder what went wrong, and be rude to nice people, they are not showing love for Kate. They are featuring a maniac who rakes in the dough for them.

She is TLC's sideshow barker AND main sideshow attraction all rolled into one.

I think that is why most people refer to the Konpound as a McMansion. Whether it technically is or not is not important. The fact that Kart lives there because it's bigger and better than her old home is why, IMHO, people often refer to it as a McMansion. I think it's more along the lines of referring to the fact that Kate is Neuvo Riche and likes to rub everyone's face in it.

But, remember Kate you may be laughing getting off the plane but those who laugh laugh last sometimes. It is the same garbage in/garbage out.

I am wondering if Twist of Kate is the same problem? There will be children filmed on an episode (if that is true that she is walking in the steps of a single mom) Figure 8 is producing it. Well...they won't be able to say they don't know the laws of each state again....

I don't think referring to the house as a McMansion should be taken literally per the definition. Jon and Kate bought the property to showcase their affluence and gain some privacy for the filming. It's a celebrity status symbol for Kate. I think it was a shock to see them move from their suburban home to such a big estate. Personally, that's when I realized that something was up with this family because I thought their other home was just fine----they could have added on and raised the kids in a neighborhood. When they bought the Wernersville property that was isolated and so big, then it became clear that they were making some big bucks. The poor mouthing of Jon and Kate just didn't make sense. So technically it's not a McMansion, but when you think about someone unclassy as Kate living there, all I can say is I wonder if she calls the pool "the cement pond".

I am sure after Tony was constantly hearing her non-stop tales of woe-is-me regarding her kids, he was sick and tired of it. He had to be away from his family, and travel to visit her AT HER HOME so she could be "home with her kids." I am sure, he even saw what an afterthought they are to her, while visiting, and got tired of her "single mom" crap when he saw all of the help that she had with the kids.

GOOD NEWS!!!! My email to Julie Carson May didn't get returned today. I sent it to marketing@mediamotionintl.com instead of info@mediamotionintl.com

I think every single person who writes something about them on the many blogs should send Julie a handwritten/typewritten letter and send it via US Mail to the address listed on Media Motion's web page.

I know a lot of people here, and other blogs, don't think it will do any good to write. I agree and disagree. Let me explain...it won't do any good to send emails, but if everybody who participates on all the Gosselin blogs were to sit down and actually WRITE a letter, put a stamp on it, and send it via US Mail, can you imagine the amount of mail that office would receive? THAT'S what they'll respond to. It's easy to delete an email and not respond. It's just as easy to tear up and throw away a handwritten letter. BUT, I think they'll be more inclined to open them and read them if they get thousands of them every week.

C'mon gang...let's get out the pen and paper (or type it on the computer) and put it in the good ol' US Mail and bombarde Media Motion, TLC, and whoever else is in charge of this media circus, with letters expressing our concern. Those "Eight Little Faces" need us to be advocates for them. Standing by idly, saying that sending emails won't do any good, isn't helping them! We need to ACT NOT REACT.

So, let's do it for the kids, since that's their Mother's motto, and she doesn't seem to be able to act upon her own statement.

I'll be sure to post any reply I may receive from Media Motion.

I've always felt they 'put off' buying their big house, for the very reason to which you are referring. They knew once they purchased such an upscale (by most viewers standards) home, the 'pleading poor' gig was going to be up, pretty quickly. They knew they couldn't show that home and then turn around and go to churches, whining about how they had no $$, etc. It's that type of deception that is so "in your face", that I find so abhorrent.

Long before June of '09, Jon had stopped going to the churches. I'm guessing he was repulsed by the idea of taking money from people when they themselves were financially sound. At that point, K cancelled the church engagements that had been scheduled, and began scheduling churches at a much higher rate than previously charged. Along w/the higher rate, Kate expected 1st class acommodations, limo service, 1st class hotel, etc. BTW, the last church, she spoke at, in about that time frame, the pastor received emails and letters about what he was getting into. He responded very curtly. Shortly after that, the divorce was announced.

"at that point, K cancelled the church engagements that had been scheduled, and began scheduling churches at a much higher rate than previously charged."

There were church speaking engagements, such as the one at New Life in September 2008, and Noel in November, being cancelled long before that over financial disputes.

"BTW, the last church, she spoke at, in about that time frame, the pastor received emails and letters about what he was getting into. He responded very curtly. Shortly after that, the divorce was announced"

If you are referring to the Roswell "incident," I don't believe that was the last church at which she spoke. That was at the end of March, and I think she was at churches in California in mid-April, and Michigan in May, as well as a few other scattered East Coast appearances.

I really don't believe that they held back on purchasing the new home because they were afraid that those love offerings would be extinguished, but rather, at that time the couple was not getting along, TLC knew it, and late that year rumors were flying. When the February Valentine's Day interview was conducted over the phone, and Kate's answer was, "We're not that couple," it was pretty clear that this was not a marriage made in heaven.

When the church speaking engagements ended in the spring of 2009, the couple was at odds, ready to announce the separation. How could they carry on the pretense of a perfect, Christian life together, when divorce was imminent? I think the high rates she wanted to charge may have been a factor in the demise of the speaking engagements, but it may have been just a smokescreen, and the real reason was not because of a mansion they had purchased or because they were living ostentatiously, or because she demanded limo service, but because they had, by this time, lost all credibiity as a happy couple. Churches, especially conservative ones, are funny about things like that.

One only needs to look at the lifestyles of the multi-millionaire television evangelists to see that donations do not stop because they live in estates. Guillible viewers continue to send them donations. When, however, a marriage crumbles, or the minister is caught in a compromising position with a prostitute or admits to being guilty of endulging in the pleasures of the flesh, that is when the money flow stops, viewers are lost and the enterprise collapses. Some are able to find forgiveness and bounce back, regaining the congregation's trust (and donations). Others simply slide into obscurity (or serve jail time on criminal charges).

I think the church speaking engagements may have involved promoting her book too? I personally thought something was up with buying the big house, but I agree that the church crowd can be gullible. Jon and Kate were held in high regard for not using selective reduction of the fetuses and I guess the Christian conservatives believed God was rewarding Jon and Kate by being able to provide for the children. I bet those folks who shelled out money at those speaking engagements and the preachers feel like fools now. I think the only reason Jon stopped speaking at the churches was because Kate didn't want him there. That was also the time when Steve was getting noticed as her traveling companion.

I think there is a difference between an evangelist/pastor, and the Gosselin's. First and foremost, being that congregants 'backing' a pastor/televangelist, believe they are providing funds for the pastor to preach and teach the word of God. That is, "go ye into all the world and prech the gospel". Tie that in with their belief that as Christians they are instructed by God to tithe (10%) and I believe that was the purpose for which the pastors were being supported. K&J were "supposedly" just sharing how God had worked/provided in their lives. That being said, I think the congregants were a bit naive and hold some responsibility for their 'giving til it hurts.'

"I don't believe Jon has been repulsed at the idea of taking money from anybody at any time"
~~~~
I believe in this case, Jon knowing it was an outright lie, may have had some problems with it. Additionally, I believe Kate had, convinced Jon that he was 'needed' at home, to keep the kids. That, or that was the excuse she gave the audience. Hmmm, now that I say that, maybe that's because K and Steve were starting to hook up????? Without Jon around on trips, the possiblities would have been endless. LOL
Not Feeling the Love said...
I attended one of their church-sponsored speaking events in September 2008. The announcement stated: "This event is free, but please come prepared to give in a love offering toward the Gosselins". The church actually had to rent out a nearby theater since its own building was too small to accomodate the turn-out. Yet here they were, believing J&K's "we're so poor and uninsured" spiel, asking the public to hand over its hard-earned money for these supposedly financially strapped, struggling parents. One month later, the Gosselins bought the McOrphanage.
I didn't offer any "love" that day, and I walked out when it was announced that Jon & Kate would be signing autographed photos for a cool $20 a pop -- cash only.
Jon & Kate have been greedy, selfish grifters from day one. Both have (and continue to) do and say whatever they have to in order to keep the cash and freebies rolling in. Hell, they literally sell their own kids out to finance their lavish lifestyles. Does anyone need any more evidence of their boundless avarice than that?
Administrator said...
I think after Kate makes sure her children are set for life for all the work they've done to keep her in her manicres and hair extensions, she should pay back all the scammed little old church ladies.
I don't lay any responsibility on those people. When someone says that they are Christian, their children need food, and to please gift to them, it's not Christian to give them the third degree and demand to see bank statements to find out if they're really poor. You're supposed to give as much as you can to the poor and needy.
Still Not Feeling the Love said...
I agree, Admin. It sickened me that the church actually put out money to provide a venue, and gave advance notice to the public that they'd be asked to make a donation ... but to the Gosselins -- and not to offset the church's added expenses. The church and its congregation acted in good faith, believing the Gosselin's story of poverty and struggles. And believe me, Jon and Kate played it up to the nth degree. Although, looking back, Jon barely spoke at all during the talk; it was mostly Kate. In retrospect, I think Jon had checked out, and was just there due to contractual obligations or some such thing. What shocked me the most, though, was Kate's blathering on about "the Lord" this and "the Lord" that. Given how relatively secular the show was, I was shocked to hear how EXTREMELY religious they seemed to be -- I'm talking a born-again level of Christian. Well, we all know that the Lord went the way of Beth, Jodi, Kevin, and the rest of the collatoral damage once the big bucks and better opportunities started rolling in. I'm not a religious woman in the traditional sense, but I do know about people "finding Jesus." The Gosselin's may be one of the few examples of people who actually "lost Jesus" in their blind pursuit of fame, money, and material possessions. That is, if they really ever were that religious to begin with. I wouldn't put it past them to have found a population that they knew they could manipulate into giving freely and very generously so long as they 'talked the talk.' First the Christians, now the Sheeple.
I also agree with you that all those church-goers who gave so willingly should be re-imbursed on the grounds of fraud. Crying poor when you're just weeks away from purchasing a $1.3 million estate???? Again, I'm not religious, but I think it's safe to say that Kate's handbasket is on stand-by, waiting for her descent.
