Ratings level out at a dismal 1.4 million

Despite desperate (and sometimes bizarre) attempts this week to drum up interest in Kate Plus 8, the ratings for Rough Ride remained almost as low as last week's episode:

Kate Plus 8
- 1.415 million viewers
- 1.0/2 HH
- 0.6/2 A18-49
via Travis Yanan

Just slightly higher than last week's episode, and lower than all the other episodes.

Kites: 1.389 million viewers, Big Apple: 1.613 million viewers, Home Roost: 2.229 million viewers, Kate Plus 8 premiere: 3.4 million viewers.

Bu-bye, Kate.

I love the 'fat lady singing' picture. I also love that so many people held strong despite Kate's disgusting, insane, ravenous appetite for attention. All that work slamming Jon, shacking up with Purse Boy, and what did she get? Around 25,000 viewers who hate her even more now? What next, Kate? Naked strolls in the Target parking lot? It will be interesting to see. "How low can she go?"

I expected a slight rise due to how much talk was going on about life vests and vomit. I think people wanted to see if it was all as bad as it sounded.

$250,000 per episode for those ratings. Outstanding decision, TLC. Have they now learned tabloid interest does not translate to ratings?

Although IMO they're still way too high. I want to see under a million!

My prediction was it would go up slightly from all the hype this week, then when those new viewers realize what a clusterf-ck the show is, they will turn away in droves and that next week it will tank like nothing before.

Admin, I hope and pray that you are right. The trainwreck factor is all she has going for her. I'm sure the new viewers were completely repulsed. I will scream from the rooftop if she dips below a million. She's on her way. If she goes to all that work to try to hype it again this week, people will be very angry. I just hope Jon keeps his mouth shut or Hate will be crying on Meredith Viera's shoulder. Keep your head down and your nose clean, Jon.

This is a very disturbing photo for what it represents...a very thin little boy, lying alone and sick in a strange place, clearly not wanting to be there--with only the comfort of a young sister. They both know Mom's not coming.

I haven't seen this episode, but if the vomit scenes are as bad as everyone says, and if TLC purposely planned this trip expecting the seasickness of little children to be entertaining, then they, too, are sick--the kind of sick that doesn't end when the boat comes ashore.

What gets me is that it was probably the haters that were watching, just to see what she would do next. I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I'm sick of hearing "I watch to see if the kids are being abused" Well, sorry, but there's nothing we can do if they are. You KNOW they get treated like crap by The Psycho Queen, you know they will get degraded, put down & yelled at. You know Kate's boobs will be on full display, and she will do something and say something idiotic. It gets to me because you just know Kate probably loves the fact that her detractors are the ones who are watching the most.

Unfortunately, TLC still knows how to draw some of us "haterz" in by releasing webisodes/previews that would rile us up i.e. life jackets and seasickness.

Some people just cannot turn away from this trainwreck. Whether it's two minutes or five (even just to verify how bad the situation really is), those still count towards the ratings.

In some ways the blogs are working against us, especially for the west coast viewers. You see a comment regarding the episode, then might want to check it out (when it airs later at 9pm) to see if it was really as bad as they say.

(Not sure how they add the ratings when the episode is shown simultaneously throughout the US, then again at 9pm for the west coast...do both count or just the first telecast?)

Kate Plus 8 airs at the same time for me on the West Coast as it does for the East Coast.

The smaller channels often don't have enough money to run a separate East Coast and West Coast "feed." Usually the smaller the cable channel the less likely it is to give us a later feed.

If I see something that's been posted and haven't seen the 6 pm showing, I've been tempted to watch the 9 pm showing to see if something really happened that way. So far, I've convinced myself to wait for a video because, like you, I don't know of the 9 pm viewers are counted in with the viewers and I don't want to take the chance.

Br prepared for a continual blitz of Kate news. When the show was monthly, we'd start getting bombarded with Kate news about 12-13 days before the episode. Now that it's weekly, we'll get bombarded daily, like we did this week.

Last month I was paid $5 to be a Neilson participant. They sent me booklets for each tv in my house and whatever we watched, we had to log it in the booklet and write down who watched it. If three people watched it, you had to list each person. One tv with 3 people watching counts as 3 viewers.

They explained to me that having people log what they watch and sending it back in is the only way to track what people are watching. HOWEVER, the booklet was mailed to me and began on a THURSDAY and sent back to them the following THURSDAY. This would not explain how the ratings for a Monday night show are released the very next day ( Tuesday ) on a website.

Next week is the big fall premiere week for most of the broadcasting networks. It also happens to be the last Kate Plus 8 episode listed (thus far), "School Time!" i.e. shoe/clothes shopping, hair cuts, possibly Kate's drop-off of first day of school, etc.

Ratings are already dismal, but will next week's episode pit against other season premieres be the nail in the coffin of this trainwreck? Is this TLC's excuse to Kate for why her show is (quietly) cancelled? (By quietly, I mean that TLC makes no announcement or special final episode i.e. Little People, Big World and Jon&Kate Plus 8.)

I haven't forgotten about the Alaska trip, but that's supposedly featured in Sarah Palin's show. Other than that, there hasn't been any tabloid evidence of filming the Gosselin kids beyond the Bald Head Island trip. Aren't their six month work permits about to expire anyway?

Us "haterz" must not fall for TLC's antics of shamelessly promoting the worst clips in previews/webisodes, just so we would curiously tune-in. 26,000 additional viewers tuned-in to watch evidence of life jackets and seasickness. Was it really worth it? Those viewers are hurting, not helping the Gosselin 8.

No I don't delete anyone who disagrees with me. Your post broke rule 1, 2, 3, and 4, but since I haven't deleted a post all day I don't want to stop now. I've only deleted a few all week long.

As for the ratings only being for 18-49 (and therefore your implication it doesn't matter I suppose?), sorry to tell you people over 49 watch TV but actually, the advertisers don't care about them because the prevailing opinion is that anyone over 49 has already picked all their favorite products and no ad will ever convince them to change their laundry detergent. So in the advertising world, no one cares about the 49 plus group and would be meaningless even if six million of them were watching the show.

Shows that do really well with the older demographic, for instance a show like Promised Land in the 90's, are canned even though the ratings are great. Because everyone who was watching had already picked their laundry detergent.

I can only speak for myself, but nothing would make me happier than to be wrong about Kate and what she is doing to her children...making them work to provide her with the life style she feels she so richly deserves because she is such a "rare" mother and so much better than the rest of us. Spin it all you want but in the end there is nothing right about that.

I also think you're giving Admin and the rest of us way too much credit when you say we can "bring down a family". Kate already did that when she asked Jon for a divorce, and now spends part of her time on national TV being calculating, spiteful and accusatory towards him. Shame on her for what she is doing to her children and to their father. I'd say Kate is doing a pretty good job on her own bringing down her family.

Yes all sheeple are like this.

There is absolutely no reason, none, that after FIVE YEARS count them five years of doing this show, she shouldn't have enough stocked away in the bank to live a very comfortable lifestyle until the children are 18.

And when I say comfortable I don't mean jetting off to Cabo on the weekend. Kate wants the Cabo lifestyle and because of that she's go to keep exploiting the kids to keep up with it.

I found this on Wikipedia......

Nielsen television ratings are gathered in one of two ways:

1.Viewer "diaries", in which a target audience self-records its viewing or listening habits. By targeting various demographics, the assembled statistical models provide a rendering of the audiences of any given show, network, and programming hour.

2.A more technologically sophisticated system uses Set Meters, which are small devices connected to televisions in selected homes. These devices gather the viewing habits of the home and transmit the information nightly to Nielsen through a "Home Unit" connected to a phone line. The technology-based home unit system is meant to allow market researchers to study television viewing habits on a minute to minute basis, seeing the exact moment viewers change channels or turn off their TV. In addition to set meters, individual viewer reporting devices, such as people meters, have allowed the company to separate household viewing information into various demographic groups, but so far Nielsen has refused to change its distribution of data of ethnic groups into subgroups, which could give more targeted information to networks and advertisers.

Changing systems of viewing have impacted Nielsen's methods of market research. In 2005, Nielsen began measuring the usage of digital video recordings such as TiVo. Initial results indicate that time-shifted viewing will have a significant impact on television ratings. The networks are not yet figuring these new results into their ad rates at the resistance of advertisers.[1]

It also said that when you are paid to fill out a Tv viewing diary for a week, that is only used during sweeps months. I did it for the end of July. I think sweeps months are February, May, July and September. The rest of the time they rely on the set meters that are connected to tv and transmitted through a phone line. My hubby is phone man ( Hey baby I'm your telephone man...Tell me where ya want it, I can put it where I can ), sorry about that, and he said he occassionally sees these set meters hooked up to the home's phone lines. He doesn't see many, though.

I have to say, I took great pleasure in not listing one single TLC program when I did my tv diary for a week. Notta one. I also commented in the section in the back where the ask for your opinions about programming. I blasted networks that exploit children on reality shows.

But I think it's safe to say, if you don't have one of these set meters attached to your tv and phone line, what you watch isn't counted.

Kate is a grown woman who doesn't need the sheeple defend her nor should she be concerned about some little blog bringing her down. The sheeple are mad because they want someone to blame for Kate's complete screw ups this week and more. We didn't make Kate say all those things to throw Jon under the bus. We didn't make Kate go to Cabo with her boyfriend. And we certainly didn't make her film her kids while they were vomiting. KATE did this herself without anyone's help. They are trying to blame us for Kate's own screw ups.

Kate is bringing herself down not us, just like so many of you predicted.

NCgirl said...

"It gets to me because you just know Kate probably loves the fact that her detractors are the ones who are watching the most."

That's one of the reasons I stopped watching. I watched most of J&K plus 8. On a show after the separation, to paraphrase, Kate said she didn't care if you loved or hated her as long as you watched. Naturally, I'm not going to do what that witch wants. I haven't watched any of Kate plus 8. Not in repeats, not on youtube. Can't even stand to see the commercials.

Pam said...

I also want to add about the ratings

Neilson has 25,000 homes with these Set Meters attached to the Neilson families TV's at any given time. They have figured there are 99 million tvs in the US. Somehow they calculate how many of the 25,000 watched a program and figure that for 99 million tv's....whatever that mathematical equation would be...to get a final ratings number.

TiVo and DVR's are being used to see what people are watching, but are not being counted ( yet ) in ratings numbers. Looks like one day they will be, but not anytime soon.

On another note, I wonder if admin's explanation of the 18-49 age demographic is the reason these older soap operas that have been on for decades and being cancelled one by one. The audience just got too old and not enough young un's were watching those. I know sooooo many little old ladies who watched Guiding Light and As The World Turns who are so upset that they are cancelled. They don't understand why.

I really have to shake my head how you all figure Kate has millions. Never have you seen any contract that Jon and Kate signed for the show, you just took Jon's word for everything. Can you imagine the bills for 8 kids over the next 10 years. Also Kate had huge lawyer bills that were incurred from Jon pulling his stunts, but I get the feeling many of you here have never had to pay a lawyer for what someone else has done. I have owned several business over the years, and after you pay taxes, payroll, invest back into a business, there is not much left. At one time Kate and Jon had two house paments, with all the up keep of both. I love the way you say if she would invest, look at the markets, nothing is making money. I for one, will always support a working Mom with children,no matter what her job is. If it's Tv work, so be it. I raised strong daughters and now they are in the business world and have help in their homes. I would never suggest to them to not move forward and continue to work and travel all over the world for their business. I'm not a Kate lover or a Jon lover, I see two parents who went their separate ways, happens everyday. My church family would have stepped up to help any family in need, whether it be a family of 2 or 10. Some people can't move on, and that's ok, but the world will move on without them.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

No one said Kate has millions. We said she SHOULD have enough to raise the kids until they are 18. Your position is 250,000 an episode is not enough to raise a big family on? This number was not reported by Jon. Jon hasn't said anything about Kate in months except that she needs help. If TLC never knocked on the door how do you think Kate would be raising her children now? The same way she did before, working a job like the rest of America.

If Kate has no money why is she going to Cabo? If you admit that was an Emmy freebie, she is still required by law to pay taxes on it. Where is that money coming from? Oh right the kids. Why doesn't she stop screwing around in Cabo and put the money in a bank account instead if she's so broke?

This was a quickie divorce, over in less than six months. It didn't even go to trial. Divorce can be expensive, but not 250k an episode expensive.

I would never suggest to them to not move forward and continue to work and travel all over the world for their business.
*********
As for always supporting a working mother, you would support a mother who prostitutes herself? That's working. How about a mother who sells drugs to pay for diapers? Not all jobs are morally right and Kate pimping out her kids is one of those jobs that is not right.

Do your adult children pimp out their kids at work? I don't think so. No one objects to Kate working. People object to Kate's KIDS working. The idea here is we want Kate to work and earn the money, not the children. Preferably in the same town as her kids. In PA. With her kids. Like every other mother there.

I have help in my home. I work my butt off to afford that luxury. What's Kate done? She's worked her children's butts' off.

Do not turn this into we object to Kate because she works, because many of us are working women.

Kate has already made WAY more than you will ever make....in fact, WAY more than most of us will ever make. So by your assessment, that would mean that ALL of us end up on welfare and live in the gutter. The fact is that you and I would end up on welfare and have to live in the gutter WAY earlier than Kate + 8 ever would. WHY would you defend her?

Do you not comprehend math? She has already made a small fortune....enough to live comfortably for the rest of her life and to support her children. Jon pays her about 20,000 per month in child support...do YOU know anyone else who is getting that kind of money for child support?

Why in the world would you defend a woman who is living a life of luxury....much more luxurious than you and I will ever get to experience? And all at the expense of her children...and at the expense of their privacy and dignity.

Would you want YOUR children picked apart and criticized all over the internet? For the rest of their lives? Would that be okay for YOUR children? But perhaps you are 15 and don't have any children yet. At the very least, you need to hone your math skills.

So 305,606,550 Million people didn't watch the show...

Well anonymous, my father raised 10 kids on a heck of a lot less money.

As for investing: I don't think it's a stretch to say she's made more than 1 million dollars in the past few years. There are investments out there that would pay $42,000 per year without touching the initial investment. That, in addition to a regular job should be enough for nine people. As for having to pay two mortgages, whose fault is that? They could have stayed in the house they had.
BTW a church family did step up to help the Gosselins. As a matter of fact it was HER family's church. But it is well documented that the donations weren't good enough for her. She wanted cash, she wanted matchy-poo-poo for all things concerning the tups. Imagine how her father felt when he had to tell her congregation that their love offerings weren't good enough. If Kate were in need today I'm sure good people would step in again, but it would be to keep the kids safe and let them have a normal childhood. If I thought sending money to Kate would get those kids off of tv I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I will always support a working Mom, too. I will not support working children, especially children who have been the subject of a reality show for 3/4 of their lives. Which just happens to fall in the grey area of PA's child entertainment regulations, causing a new PA house bill to be introduced. When the day comes that Kate can actually hold her own in the entertainment industry without *ever* having her children be filmed, I will support Kate as a working mother.
To hold her up as a shining example as a strong, self sufficient, single mother is an outright insult to REAL strong, self sufficient single mothers. Such as Joy Mangano, the inventer the Miracle Mop and the padded hangers to name a few. 20 yrs. ago she was a broke divorced mother of young kids. She did not invite TV cameras into her home to film her children at their most private and vunerable moments, instead she had some of her ideas patented and is now the CEO of a company grossing $100 million dollars a year.
As far as "Jon's stunts", Admin is correct, what stunts would those be? They were divorced in the blink of an eye. Jon made some very poor choices last year but those did not contribute to Kate's legal bills.
Lastly, spare us your way overused Kate defender excuse "can you imagine the bills for 8 kids over the next 10 years?" When you people say that, what you are really saying is "do you know what it will cost for Kate to maintain the lifestyle she feels she is entitled to for the next 15 years?" Because I know people with large familes who make $100,000 year and have a stay at home mom, the kids all have the newest clothes, go on trips to Disney, have the latest gadgets, go to many sports camps etc. Large familes can live very well on a mere fraction of what Kate makes. Kate is not satisfied with just living well, by overpaying for her mansion and her insistence on being waited on hand and foot, she has created a lifestyle for herself she will not be able to maintain if her "career" fails to pan out.

1.415 million viewers

Not low enough.

I'll be very happy when I see that only 7 viewers tuned in.

I am proud to say that I did not, and will not EVER tune in to see Kate's child abuse.

Seriously, I think the "so-called Haters" are the ones keeping Katie Munster's ratings up.

At this point, I doubt her fan base is going to grow any further. So, guess who is keeping her around? Curious people waiting to see her say or do something horrible, people that "accidentally" stumbled onto TLC when changing the channels, folks that (out of morbid curiousity) head to YouTube the next day, or people that decide to tune in for the midnight showing...

IT'S US (not the administrator, of course, and the ones that won't watch)- and you know what, she's counting on it!

**The more outrageous she is, the more the desenters will want to tune in so that we can rip her apart on the blogs- and that equals ratings!!!**

I'm starting to wonder about the folks that are obviously upset with Kate, yet end up watching anyway. Look, we live in America- land of the free (thank God). If you want to watch the show-watch it! If you don't like what she is doing to her kids- don't watch it. But this indecision keeps the monster inflated and employed.

Take a stand to protect the Gosselin 8!

The show would dip below a million if those bloggers who watch, you know, the ones who were just flipping channels, etc. would just stop. This drives me crazy. People who watch are fans whether a Kate hater or not. This is why TLC keeps her on the air. She gets the best of both worlds watching. Not so many on this blog watch, but geez, others do. And remember that we are much more tech savvy than you may believe, and with everything digital, companies sell data which may explain the overnight numbers posting so quickly. There is the ability to know what every household watches.

Anonymous, yes, at one time Jon and Kate did have two house payments to make...and who's fault was that? Theirs, and I'll bet, hers with him agreeing just to keep the peace. 'Mine, all mine' somehow just sounds like Kate was the force behind buying the unnecessary Orphanage. It is this home, plus Kate's other extravagances (chef, nannies/plural, gardeners, unnecessary bodyguard (why does she only need protection sometimes if she's in danger?), private school for 8, tens to hundreds of thousand dollars' worth of plastic surgery, new whorish outfit nearly every time she calls the lone pap, etc) that have put the gosselins in unnecessary financial peril. When she cried that she couldn't pay her bills, she meant that she was unwilling to cut out all the stuff and needed money to keep it up. In addition, the etown house languished on the market for months because greedy Kate was unwilling to lower the price to current market value and was too lazy or too cheap to clean it up enough to make it appealing to buyers. No one is bashing working moms, most of us are working moms. We are sick of kate's indulging herself using money made by filming the kids in misery, being mistreated, puking, and dragged on the most miserable trips with a camera hog mom. She should be able to raise those kids, maybe even in that tacky Orphanage and in that private school, but not if she continues spending money on herself or to care for those kids she never had the resources to support until tlc came along. Don't insult working moms who have help or not. Kate doesn't have a steady job, she does not take care of her own kids, and pretends jon and the nannies don't do the majority of the childcare.

Too bad, too sad that they don't even for a moment consider what is happening to the kids. All for their viewing entertainment. Entertainment? I haven't watched at all this year and will never watch again. Can someone please explain to me how watching young children barf be entertaining? How watching their little faces while they are so sick entertaining? How watching Kate add -ish to every word entertaining? The sheeple can say what they want but it is VERY telling that when they went out to eat with Jamie and Kate that Jamie had to forcefully make some of them go to Kate's table. No one wanted to sit with her. Kinda reminds you of the little train trip at the Zoo when no one wanted to sit in the seat with Kate. BUT, it is very important to remember that the sheeple need their entertainment.

Vote with your remote! Don't watch Kate.
