Every year or so we cycle through the nursing saga. Is her degree as good as someone who went to a college.

I am a nurse. A career nurse. I work side by side with nurses who did both programs. There is NO difference in our skill set. There is no difference in how we chart, deliver meds, care for our patients. Some of us are trauma nurses and we literally save pts. lives every day. Some of us bring babies into the world and my very best friend is our house supervisor. This subject is old and been beat to death.

I think it just kills people that Kate is an RN and had the intelligence to get through the program.

The chili cook-off (Lititz Fire and Ice) was held yesterday. I think that Jon had a really fun time as one of the judges! He loves people, community charity events, and food. No Uggs, though!

The smoked beef brisket chili was amazing, but I may not look at another bowl of chili for some time.

We're up to a balmy 11 degrees here. After last night, anything seems warm.

Well, I expect TFW to put in an appearance any time now because Jon posted an Instagram picture of himself & Colleen at the Berks County cystic fibrosis event. TFW will post a picture of the fantastic Valentine's Day celebration that she had for the kids.

@ConcernedChick @Kateplusmy8 Yeah, right. Everytime the door opens he rushes down 2 flights from where he's asleep beside her bed??

I'm not familiar with the layout of the house, but I thought Kate has a first-floor master suite. If the dog sleeps by her bed, why would he have to go down two flights of steps to go outside? He could certainly hear the front door open and be left outside that way.

What am I missing?

And Milo will chime in seconds after, with her hideous hashtags.

Kate went through the program 20 years ago. Were the requirements as strict then as they are now? I don't know...just asking.

I have no idea if she is still qualified to go back to nursing, or if she has to take refresher courses. That aside, would anyone want her to be their nurse? I can't imagine that her bedside manner is something that you'd want to write home about! I wonder, too, how she would get along with other nurses. She would have to work side by side with them, and with her arrogance I would think that she wouldn't be too pleasant a person with whom you'd want to work.

We were -34 last night and now 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Our bathroom faucets froze despite dripping and open cupboards- never happened before. SO lucky that the hot water remained running so the taps thawed- the pipes are old and in the wall- what an expense and mess if they had burst! Another frigid night tonight and then a snow to sleet storm for Monday....winter is all packed into February it seems.

Stay safe and warm, everyone !

There are mediocre teachers, nurses, presidents etc. People routinely leave nursing careers for various reasons and then return years later. there are refresher courses readily available to help nurses return to update skills and return to work. If she wanted to, she could absolutely get a job. People don't get hired solely based on their bedside manner. There is an expectation of professional behavior in every aspect of the job--it isn't a popularity contest.

I listened to the evening news/weather report and Mr. Weather Guy is covering all bases. Possible snow by 6 p.m. (really...when does it begin?) changing to all snow in the evening, with sleet and snow overnight, possibly all snow, with freezing rain on Tuesday morning changing to all rain and then maybe back to snow flurries.

Why don't they just say, "We're not sure what form the precipitation will take, or when it will start and end. Just look out your window."

I don't see anyone giving her academic sainthood. It was just pointed out that despite false claims to the contrary, Kate in fact did pursue and complete post-secondary education. And those in the profession are informing those who are not that a hospital diploma program RN is not a "lower" form of RN as has also been stated here repeatedly.

There are trends in every career. Back when Kate went to nursing school, that was pretty normal and many jobs were open to you. The trend has changed and many employers are looking for the BSN degree rather than the nursing school. I have no idea how hard it would be for Kate to get a job. Nurses have a number of work-at-home options with reviewing medical records or clinical studies. I am not up to date on whether she would qualify for those without the BSN in today's climate. But it is pretty obvious she is not going to get a job. TLC (and all the viewers) owe her a living for allowing her to have 8 children. I have heard stories about her nursing (I get my medical care in the Reading area) and I am glad she's not working with patients any more.

No doubt. While I have always thought is that both J+K should have retreated to private lives and allowed the kids to recoup whatever privacy that wasn't left in the bottom of toilets and on boat decks, I've long since realized that the Gosselin children will never be granted this gift by Kate.
It now follows that Jon be allowed to express his truths, experiences and life lessons.
I believe Jon's account will be more like Jon- a bit less polished, more direct and more revealing. I think Jon's book(s) could put the issue of raising children on tv back into the public zeitgeist. Heaven knows Robert's book never broke through whatever impenetrable barrier put up by the many forces of TLC and Kate Gosselin.
I really believe Robert has is still tries to pull back the curtain.
This is a long overdue conversation that needs to be given more than the banal lip service of lollipop talking heads, chirping the latest headline-grabbing topics such as Kate banging the help.

No parent should ever be allowed to unilaterally decide that their minor charge's privacy is up for sale. Children are simply not able to give informed consent, which I have procured many times from adult research subjects when the worst possible predicted outcome is temporary muscle soreness.
I can not imagine an independent review board signing off on a trial which involves the very likely loss of long-term privacy and dignity to little children.
Especially when the benefit is purely material.

Tucker's Mom (#51), I appreciated your eloquent thoughts.

The sheeple seem oblivious to the detrimental aspects of filming. They can only see things in terms of benefits -- cool trips, a great house, a good education, and a mom who doesn't have to work full time. But what about the persistent invasion of those children's privacy for the public's enjoyment? For every half hour episode, dozens of hours are filmed. Multiply that by a decade, and it's almost unfathomable that this treatment of minors has been allowed to continue.

The harm that's been done to these kids cannot be measured. If any of them ever do sue, how can you quantify what they've lost?

&&&&

The poster said they were against research that involved violating a child's privacy and dignity. I'm not aware of the IRB signing off on something like that in recent memory. That would violate ethical guidelines.

I think the consensus among most people here is that there are very real dangers for child actors they are just as concerned about as they are for reality TV children. You need only watch the news to see the result of being a child star or listen to grown adults like the Olsen twins talk about their experiences (they felt like trained monkeys, and are so upset about their childhoods on set they refused to participate in Fuller House). However, there are much, much better protections in place for child actors. Including in most states, an on set advocate who watches out for a child who is too tired or stressed to do a scene, clocks their hours and schooling down to the second, and ensures they are never subjected to anything unsafe, uncomfortable, or humiliating. In many states like CA, I'm not sure what else could be added to the law to protect these children short of banning child acting all together, which I recognize is not realistic. At certain ages in CA, you can barely work but a few hours before you're done for the day.

This is a decade-long experiment on minor children. Not in a laboratory, not in a private facility, but on national TV. And it is not being done to offer physical, mental, or emotional help to other children, or to future generations. So I find any comparison to genuine clinical research experiments to be far-fetched.

And while it seems unfathomable that anyone would give informed consent to this experiment, a greedy TV network, and a horrible mother have agreed, and continue to agree to it. And as long as they continue, I am going to voice my opinion about it.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I hope this is far enough removed from the nursing discussion but regarding Kate's intelligence, I don't think she's smart. I think she's of average intelligence. Kate's biggest problem is laziness. She is rarely up to her potential because she has no drive or desire to be. She would rather email 100 companies begging for freebies than go work in a hospital and make a difference for some patients and stimulate and challenge herself intellectually in the medical field.

She sounds dumb about current events not because she doesn't understand them but because she doesn't inform herself. There's a difference between being dumb and being uninformed. But if she were forced to study a newspaper and then take a quiz I have no doubt she would do just fine on the quiz. She just doesn't WANT to be informed.

We saw moments of creativity and intelligence on Celebrity Apprentice, when she felt like applying herself. So, it's there.

Oh, and I do think her motives for being a nurse were largely to get a man, a doctor. And that fits perfectly into the idea that when she has motivation, whether it's to get a man, or get freebies, or win CA, or whatever, she will apply herself and accomplish things.

She is not motivated by the personal satisfaction of a hard day's work, of challenging herself intellectually, of the joy of learning new things and being aware of the world, of the accomplishment of higher education. Those things don't do it for her, never have.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I liked Better Call Saul last night. It occurred to me Saul likes the fun and thrill of a good scam, of playing a part and executing. That's more important to him than whatever the takeaway is.

But he's also realizing it's not as fun to do this by himself. He wants a partner in crime.

Good points about what Twitter is:

Stephen Fry, host of Sunday's British Academy Film Awards, has quit Twitter after users of the platform criticized his on-air joke about costume designer Jenny Beavan being dressed like a "bag lady."

In a blog post, the British actor, writer and comedian said he was deactivating his account because Twitter has become a "stagnant pool" littered with scum and other hazards.

"Even if you negotiate the sharp rocks you'll soon feel that too many people have peed in the pool for you to want to swim there any more. The fun is over," he wrote.

Reductio ad absurdum. However, I do appreciate your tacit acknowledgement that this "reality" tv genre of invasively filming children's lives in situ, over the course of virtually their entire minor lives, is experimental, whereby outcomes, are at this point, inherently unknown.

If Jon releases a book I don't think it is going to revolve around raising the kids. That whole story line has been beaten to death by Kate and nothing Jon could say will untwist the way Kate has portrayed herself as the sole provider for the eight kids.

Instead I think Jon is going to go into the background of how a family with good intentions went completely off the tracks when fame and money struck and they weren't prepared for the consequences. I would look for Jon to go into detail of how thankful he was that the locals supported their needs but then Kate and TLC started pushing filming, promotions, $25K speaking fees, etc. on the family. The regular trips by Kate and Steve while Jon stayed with the kids had to raise suspicions too. Maybe Jon has some proof about an affair he will release.

Kate's true colors as a narcissistic sociopath came through and she made unilateral decisions that were not in the best interest of the family. That is what lead to the demise of Jon and Kate's relationship. Jon will also likely go into some more details of the various innuendos, threats, suits, and injunctions Kate and TLC got to guarantee he had no say in when the kids were filmed.

I don't think Jon will ever go into specifics about his relationship with particular children. He is going to protect their privacy to the best of his ability. I think the book will be an expose on Kate's and TLC's destruction of their marriage in pursuit of the almighty dollar.

Kate always boils it down to the self-serving and overly-simplified axiom: You'd do it to.
It's false. Patently false.
Kate's mantra that filming would stop if anyone didn't want to film anymore was also false, and I'd love for that to be widely known.
If Jon, a grown man, couldn't make it stop, how can any of the kids?

Oh, and I do think her motives for being a nurse were largely to get a man, a doctor. And that fits perfectly into the idea that when she has motivation, whether it's to get a man, or get freebies, or win CA, or whatever, she will apply herself and accomplish things.

*******
In swimming terms, Kate is a sprinter as opposed to a distance swimmer. She dives in, swims like mad for a short race and then is done. 1,650 meter (32 lengths of an Olympic sized pool) swimmers pace themselves to keep going with a strong but unfrenzied stroke, methodically moving through the water. Less scurry, more endurance.

One of the many reasons I chose not to undergo fertility treatments. Fatigue is one of the leading symptoms reported among women with PCOS. We really have to limit carb and fat intake. I watch every bite, I am on metformin, a drug commonly prescribed for diabetes. My blood
sugar, A1c is tested every 6 months. My health and weight are good and still I find I get tired more quickly than anyone I know! I am a distance runner, and a nap taker too. My mind is always going.
Sometimes I have high energy days where I can't sit still, others I am dragging. Blood sugar and
hormones. When I was younger I was depressed, also common with PCOS. Knowing all of this, being aware of it...and other reasons. I thought it best to not to do fertility treatments.

It upsets me that Kate did not share any information on pcos when she had a platform to do so! PCOS is about a lot more than infertility. Lots of women go undiagnosed into their 30's. Metformin for many is a life saver. Important to keep weight down. So much she might have shared.
Oh well, going back to my slushy corner on the veranda....

I meant to say the many symptoms of pcos, are among the reasons I did not choose fertility treatments. Fatigue is one of the leading symptoms. Also were the risks, family medical history, the cost, and our financial ability at the time.
Typing on an iPad it is difficult to see the start of my post by the time I've finished my ramblings!

Many women with PCOS think Kate could have really made a difference in raising awareness and funding for treatment, but she's only managed to use it as her reason for doing fertility treatments.
Odd that she's never addressed PCOS during one of her "Ask Kate" snooze fests. But of course she's managed to take the time to talk about her tanning, spa routine and clothing size.
You know, meaningful stuff.

I don't know what's been happening to my posts today but I'll try one more topi me and then move on.

TFW did attend and graduate from an accredited hospital degree program and was awarded her RN.
TFW did take the state exam required to be certified and she does take the necessary classes to keep her certification current.
So even though she did not (technically speaking) attend a four year college and get a BS (even though she's full of it), she did get the necessary training to become an RN.

That being said, I don't think I'd want her to be my nurse since we've all seen how she treats her sick kids and she "hearts" them.

I still wonder if Katie's pcos was/is self diagnosed, like her alleged ocd.
IF she did have ocd (she doesn't), she also could have had a platform for addressing its debilitating nature. Psychiatric diagnoses still carry an unnecessary stigma.

"The" IRB? There is no single entity known as "the IRB." It's not like the IRS. I don't think you know what an IRB is. How could you possibly know what every IRB in the country has or has not approved? There are thousands of them.

Institutional review boards. IRB. Or IRBs. Whatever is your pleasure.

Thank you for proving my point. The Olsen twins experience was with strict labor laws. So if you believe the Olsen twins were harmed and that that is a typical child actor experience, then you should not be watching any television show or movie featuring a child after or you are a hypocrite.

&&&&

I don't agree with that. I think a person can have concerns and objections to things without engaging in a straight boycott. The world is not that simple.

There's a lot I don't agree with when it comes to the IRS but I still pay my taxes. I don't particularly like my state senators, but I still live in California. I would object if Hillary Clinton is elected president, but I'm not about to whine and say I'm moving to Canada. If everyone who doesn't actively boycott anything they take issue with is a hypocrite, so be it.

I really have to agree with that. Someone said more or less bedside manner really isn't that important in a nurse. Well, it should be, and I think for a lot of medical facilities it is something they consider in hiring. It is especially important to women when it comes to their obgyn and their team. One bad nurse can ruin a woman's delivery experience let alone a snippy doctor.

For me, bedside manner is actually probably the second most important factor just after their medical expertise. Like a lot of people I don't like hospitals, and after going through some stomach issues for a couple years with several tests and being put under twice, it was extremely important to me I had a doctor and a team of nurses who were kind and understanding and I felt safe with. I just don't think I could have dealt with someone gruff and insensitive.

If I'm not mistaken Kate worked in the labor and delivery ward where I believe a kind word and gentle touch from all medical staff are crucial.

It's too bad, I agree with you. Not that she is obligated to, but I believe if you have a platform to speak to a lot of people you should think seriously about how you can make a difference. What will be your cause? How will you change the world even a little bit? There are many other examples of celebrities who have done great things with their fame. She has done nothing. When you only use your fame to defend your motherhood and exploit your not-cute-anymore back-talking kids, is that really anything for the history books?

Still waiting for you to explain how you could know what thousands of IRBs have or have not approved, as you claimed.

&&&&&

Well, they have their ethical guidelines. If you're so sure of this why don't YOU prove they have approved unethical child experiments in recent memory? You're the one disputing this, YOU do the work to find anything that would prove me wrong that an IRB has, any time recently, approved an unethical experiment on children.

Bedside manner is very important for a nurse. I've been hospitalized many times. A nurse does not have to be a softie or touchy feely. What is very important are listening skills. The nurse needs to listen to what a patient says, process it, and be clear she is open to more communication. Nurses are on the front lines and the patient needs to feel comfortable saying what she feels. I've had many great nurses (and a few bad ones.)

Absolutely. And speaking of communication I appreciated when my nurses and doctors took the tiny bit of extra time to say things like this is going to sting, you can squeeze my hand or the pillow if you want. On three. Instead of just sticking you.

fidosmommy said...

I, along with countless others, could write a book about the difference between nurses who do the work because they love being nurses and those who just go through the technical business of following doctors' orders. I/we have had both and everything in between.
I'll take an Aunt Jodi type nurse every time.

I've had some wonderful nurses, warm and caring and too often overworked. Fortunately I can say I've had only a few who were cold, seemingly indifferent to my situation.
Nothing compares to human kindness in times of fear.

I'll say this and I'll be done. Kate had a platform to talk about pcos. She took for granted the gift modern medicine gave her. She demanded the the commonwealth of Pennsylvania take care of her family! She must have known the general lack of understanding of the disease at the time. Not a word. She was willing to travel to churches where she was paid thousands to speak about how GOD wanted this for her, but not one support group, not one day at a local hospital to talk about how scientific research and modern medicine had made this happen.
She's a self serving hypocrite.
I'll say this for the little couple, Dr. Arnold is very involved in giving back.

I actually do not not doubt she suffers from PCOS because besides the symptoms and examination, the blood tests would not lie. I believe she used this, though, to push for fertility treatments early in the marriage instead of being more conservative. Some women are able to conceive naturally with PCOS. Why the rush and why risk multiples? Hmmmm

" Every story arc needs an antagonist and a protagonist—that is what creates the conflict and resolution, i.e. the drama."

Used to be you'd have to be a novitiate to not know how reality tv shows are made. I get that J+K didn't realize at first, how the tension between them would become the driving force behind their great success.
Now, Kate knows that she is not enough and has ushered in her own daughter, Mady, to take Jon's place and provide the conflict and "rub" the show needs.
Just look at the reactions Mady gets.
It's really sickening and I wonder if Mady "gets" her role in the show. I wonder if she gets that she's been branded "the bitch" since she was very young.
This reputation WILL follow Mady. She'll be seen as sardonic, blithe, uncooperative, selfish, uncaring and disrespectful to authority figures.

Thanks for the link.

That article by a Real Housewife's daughter was very well thought and should be taken as a stern warning.

I can see Mady writing something like that when she grows up. She was cast as the villain in much the same way this particular family was. The psychological damage that does to a child is without measure.

Handinhand (#104), thank you for that link. That was a powerful piece.

Think of how much that girl suffered, and she wasn't even the star of the show. She wasn't a Real Housewife -- she was the daughter of one. And now think about those 8 children who have
been the "8" in the title of a reality show for
a decade now, with no end in sight.

I agree. If anything, Kate diagnosed herself, which benefited her wanting to go on fertility meds.

I agree, too. If she was pregnant in her teens, even if she suspected she had PCOS for some reason ( and I don't believe that), then wouldn't she think fertility was not an issue? She was still quite young.

I see women in the ER all the time with metformin complications. Be it for type 2 diabetes, and overweight, or PCOS. Metformin interacts with so many other meds, doctors once thought it was a wonder drug with all it off label uses. UGG, I hate mismanagement of drugs.

A pt asked me a few weeks ago if I enjoy what I do, and my automatic response was, yes, very much so. When work lulled a bit, I was telling this to my co-worker, another great career nurse, and I said you know, I really don't like it as much as I did.

Ladies, I got into the medical field for all the right reasons. But healthcare has changed so much. Our facility is required to take anyone who comes to our ER, regardless of ability to pay. We treat strep throat on kids whose parents think coming to the ER is faster. We treat drug seekers who take up so much of our time. We treat criminals and thugs, pysch pts. nursing home neglects, and when the stroke pts come in and the traumas, the heart pts and such we are so bogged down it is down right scary. We hire kids right of school who have not a clue.

And yet, our facilty, a top notch facilty mandates us to treat every pt like they were are only one. I wish!!! To use the open ended statement, "Is there anything else I can do for you?", takes us down an unending rabbit hole. For example, can my friend get a coke and a blanket? Can you find the movie station for me? I don't like this room. This blood pressure cuff is too tight. It goes on and on in one room. It seems like the poor and uninsured are the most demanding and don't even get me started on the illegals. All in a days work, and terribly understaffed.

No, I don't like my current work environment, but ususally on every shift, I make a solid save and connection with someone and it keeps me going. If we spend too much time with a pt we are reprimanded. If we spend not enough time, we are reprimanded. All this too say, if you don't have an emergency, please don't go to the ER. Not only will it cost you a fortune in time and money....we will run every possible test and exam to CYA. Lets save the ER for trauma, strokes and heart attacks. Most everything else an Instcare can handle.

RANT over.
