Did anyone else notice , when the deck was finished, Kate voiced over that she invited FAMILY & Friends over to celebrate. With the word " family"..they showed an Asian woman holding a small Asian child , which Kate kissed on the forehead...wonder if they were related to Jon ?

Yesterday I was been out on our balcony sweeping snow and ice off it. If the surface scratches, you have to sweep snow off instead of shovel, and that is even more work than shoveling.

But that won't bother Kate. didn't she use a shovel to clear snow off one of her cars?

And you bring up another big drawback of a second story or higher deck. Maintenance. With a first floor deck you can let things go until they break and it's not a big deal to fix it when you get to ti.

I am sure that if there are any problems with the deck, Mr. Deck Man will be there is a flash to make any repairs for his doll-baby, lesbian or non-lesbian.

I just can't believe she would let Jon's family on her property. I assumed they were associated with the school, TLC, or maybe work for Kate somehow. Kate showing she has friends seems fake to me.

Oh, I'm not worried about. I just found it funny that Goody said she received an email from Kate and replied to her, and then Kate gets on twitter all flustered because she either doesn't remember sending it or did not send it.

Like I said, I wonder if it was a joke between Milo and Goody to make Kate look like she emails her fans(yeah right) and Kate wasn't let it on the joke.

Here's the thing. Berks County is totally hilly. I can drive around and see lots of 2nd floor decks. So many houses are built on a hill with a walk-out basement. I don't hear about lots of accidents. Most of them are much more modest houses with modest decks (plain decks with no outdoor kitchen). These houses do not have pools. They only have one staircase not two. I've never seen a house with a second floor door to no where.

I think our main problem is we know Kate's reputation. Does she know the weight limit for the deck and how much snow is too much? Does she know that the furniture has to be put away or tied down in bad storms? Does she supervise her children?

This deck appears to be greed for the sake of greed. Give me more, more, more. It seems to have no point beyond I want. And I believe she uses these projects to get income without getting income. TLC gives her the deck and pays the taxes on the "income" and the kids get zip. She likely assumes she'll be able to sell the house for lots of extra bucks when the kids move out but it will be horribly overpriced for the area and an impractical house.

&&&&

Absolutely. And that's the point. Do I trust responsible deck owner, like the poster here who decided to lock the because there were little children about? Of course. I don't have the first fear an accident would happen if people are being responsible.

But do I trust irresponsible deck owners who time and time again don't keep a good watch on their kids (one example of dozens, the kids driving the four wheeler and Kate not knowing) and time and time again don't understand and suck at maintenance? Absolutely not. And Kate's in that category, there's no getting around it. I hope she never has any problems or accidents on that deck, I really do.

Did she also score a new grill? The one shown at 38:01 looks nothing like the grill in this picture(which she tweeted back in 2012).

Of course she did! She now has TWO grills (don't all scrimping and saving, piecing and patching single moms? and all of us for that matter!?).

She now has one brand new grill on the new deck and one downstairs on the patio (underneath the new deck - the new deck was built on top of the roof above the old patio). So, double (or triple or more?) of everything in that house. SMH Because she's lazy and she's greedy.

Weighing in on the deck...

It's a beautiful deck, and I'm sure that anyone would be happy to have one like that, but I wonder how much use she will get out of it, or is it just to impress for the sake of impressing? Oh, that's right. It's for well-being and health. Got it.

If she is serious about entertaining, she should have opted for an area near the pool. She could have built a multi-level deck there, anchored by a large gazebo where she could have put a sizeable table, comfortable chairs. It would provide shade for adults who don't want to be in the sun, but want to be in close proximity to the pool, either for themselves or to supervise their kids. The deck could contain more tables, umbrellas, lounge chairs, storage benches and the grill. That way, with everyone congregating around the pool, it would be a great area for entertaining. When you have summer parties, you want to be near the pool, on that level...that's the purpose of having a pool and entertaining there. She certainly has enough land to built additional structures by the pool.

But that's just me. Perhaps that will be her next construction project... TWO decks, an upper deck for adults and one for kids by the pool. Then again, she'd have to walk to the pool deck/gazebo with the food, or she could just have the parties catered and not have to do anything.

Carole said...

Where is she going to store those pillows, blankets and cushions? Will the children have to carry those things (and possibly chairs) downstairs to the unfinished basement? Enclosed storage space was not mentioned in the reviews I read. If the deck faces north she can get by without covering it from the sun, but it will need protection from rain and snow.

bm

**************

She bought covers for everything.

I guess she plans on covering and uncovering everything every time she plans on using the deck. I bet she tires veryyyy quickly doing that every time. Or, I should say, the kids will tire of doing that every time for her - if she lets them touch anything out there. During the winter I'm sure the kids will be tasked with schlepping everything to either the garage or the basement.

I think her control issues are getting worse rather than better now that the kids are older and more capable of helping or doing things themselves. She wouldn't let the kids wipe up a spill on the deck - she had to do it, screeching and almost pushing them away, saying 'only me' when one of the kids offered. She made the sign for their lemonade stand. Tell me what kid doesn't love and take pride in making signs? But, she butted right in and did it.

You have a good point that explains why Kate is waxing on about how the deck benefits the kids. She gets home improvements and they get diddly squat, or 1/8 of diddly squat.
I'm sure Kate will jack up the price of that house when she sells, and she will sell it. I can't see it being her forever home. It's ridiculous to live there alone.
Kate will up the price of the home to reflect the cost of all those filmed additions, but that's just not how it works.

Why, exactly, would she need an outdoor kitchen, when her new deck is just a few steps from her regular kitchen? She uses paper plates for everything anyways, is it so hard to grap a stack and bring it outside? Now the woman has THREE kitchens. The main kitchen with a huge 6-burner stove and 2 dishwashers, the small extra kitchen in the basement, and the new deck kitchen. I also agree that her deck would cost at least $75K-$100K. TimberTech is more expensive than standard cedar, and she has 2 sets of stairs (regular and spiral-also more expensive). The very large size, and not a simple square or rectangle, ups the price. Add new grill and outdoor kitchen, deck furniture and blankets/cushions, and you are approaching a small mortgage.

rhythm, composite decking can get green but just pressure wash or spray on a mildew remover and hose off. Sometimes you have to brush in the mildew remover if you don't keep up with it. It's a yearly chore. There are a ton of products available at Lowe's or Home Depot and they are safe for plants with the water runoff. Composite decking is not maintenance free.

She could have put in a gazebo on one end of the deck for a shady area with a porch swing (my favorite thing), but the gazebo by the pool is an awesome idea too.

How about her screeching when she discover the iron table left rust marks on her brand new deck? By the way, she thinks she is oh so smart covering up everything. Well, I tried that with some resin furniture with cushions, and they still got wet and mine were better covers than hers. Better to just remove the cushions. Another job for the boys on their chore chart.

I'm not sure why everyone is so worried about the snow load. There are lots of decks on buildings in areas where they get a heck of a lot more snow than she does. Building codes would set the standard so I'm sure it would never be an issue. The Deck_Douche would be able to answer that question.

Oh no for a second story structure like this it's imperative you remove the snow after a heavy fall or seriously compromise its integrity. Snow may look light and fluffy but it can pack on serious, and dangerous pounds.

Mel said...

She should have purchsed Tropitone deck furniture. Cushions are quick dry, with Sunbrella fabric which is fade resistant. No need to remove from the rain. They dry in about 10 minutes. The frames are heavy duty and don't rust.

The non-cushion furniture is super comfortable and extremely quick dry. They are all heavy enough that they don't blow around in the wind.

No need to cover any of it except for the winter. I put what I can in the shed, and cover the rest.

It's the most awesome deck furniture ever, well worth the expense.

Sounds like she didn't do her research there.

Yep. The weight of snow an be deceiving, and depending if we get ice along with it, it can absolutely compromise the integrity of the deck. I recall last winter, when we had so much snow and ice coming on a regular basis, that there were photos of decks that collapsed when snow wasn't removed. I even remember a reminder put out on a local channel about the importance of removing snow on second level decks.

I got to hand it to TLC. Because their "talent" is only interesting for so long, they pour money into things and situations and have their "talent" react for a tv show. Lack of self-awareness and greed are a turn off. That deck is a manifestation of all that is wrong with Kate's show, herself, and the people who admire her. Nobody begrudges someone installing a deck, but for Kate to behave like she deserves that deck and to lie that she scrimped and saved for it is just insulting to viewers. Keep watching if you want to be taken for a fool, sheeple. If you knew someone in your life like Kate, would you be friends with her? Would you tolerate her entitlement? No self-awareness as to other's needs? The only opinions that count are Kate's? Attention seeking? Demanding? Deserving happiness at the expense of others? More take than give in relationships? The list is endless. Yeah, she's a great mother and isn't it fun to watch her children serve her? That deck: all about Kate, a monolith structure that proves she is better than everyone else, deserves it, and another way to terrorize the kids with her rules.

Sorry to disagree, but snow doesn't weigh more when it's on a second story deck. As the guy in this article states, you only start to worry if the snow level reaches the tops of the 3 foot railings. If it gets higher than that, you start to shovel if the construction is sub-par.

Decks are rated for a greater snow-load than roofs.

Perhaps the locals can tell us if she gets more snow than they do in Boston or other snow-belt areas.

I think Kate's deck "kitchen" is simply a grill that is built-in with L- counters and storage underneath. I didn't see a sink or refrig. I saw some woman open a silver cabinet that is beneath the long counter and I thought for a moment that it may be a small refrig. But it had two handles on it and it matcedh a smaller silver cabinet on the right side of the grill. And Kate mentioned they made room for her to store stuff. Therefore I don't think it really qualifies as a kitchen at all. Of course Kate refers to it as a kitchen because Kate lies to make herself better than everybody else.

Leslie said...

I don't think Kate really entertains much at all. She said they have one or two parties in the summer. And she said they have some gatherings. Well, one of the parties is probably for the tups birthdays and another for July 4th. And Kate does not swin so she probably doesn't use the pool other than to sunbathe. So therefore she is not interested in her "kitchen" being by the pool. She simply wanted a great looking place for her kids or herself to disperse to when the noise is too loud and also easy access to grill and eat. And I think she solved those issues with what she did. Her kids will pay the price with all the snow shoveling, hosing, powering washing, sweeping, cushion removal and storage, etc. Kate has 8 slaves to do that work for her. You know just like she had her 8 kids pay for her deck.

Leslie said...

I just thought about my sister who built a lovely home with a true out door kitchen. It has a true built in grill (Kate bought one and stuck it in concrete), small refrig. and sink. It is all under cover with a large tv and fire pit. And after two summers they hardly use it. I mean rarely. My sister is the one in the family that buys to simply show off to the rest of the family. The sad part is the whole family is so sick of her talking about money that they really don't want anything to do with her. And believe me nobody is jealous of her. Everybody feels sorry for her. It is sad and my sister will never get it.

Leslie said...

Kate has the discretion to take money out of the kids accounts for their care- "well being", health, education, clothing- and I can see her using that reasoning to spend $$$ on a gratuitous deck.
It's nonsense to reason that a deck is life-enriching for the kids.
It's Kate projection her wants on her children, once again.

As I said earlier, most parents sacrifice so that their kids can do sports, activities, Scouts, camp etc. Not additions to a 7K square foot home which Kate is already bitching about being too small.

Kate needs to think up an excuse for her en suite next. Hmm...Mady needs a better soaking tub?

TLC stinks said...

When the deck was under construction, she said she ordered a fire pit. I previously mentioned that.

I agree. Kate calls the built in Weber grill a kitchen. I did wonder why she kept bragging about a kitchen. The point was to have close access to her ginormous real kitchen. It would have made sense, if she did not do this, to have included a small fridge so people don't have to go inside for their drinks. In fact, what about an undercounted ice maker too? I did not see that and that is something you would want to include for the ultimate party deck.

reader said...

Looking at that mug during the couch interview, (deck talk) it's obvious Kate's had some work again, Botox, fillers, etc. The perfectly smooth surface looks plastic an unnaturally hard. The years of tanning, the botox and fillers, the heavy makeup ...the look is artificial and unattractive. Nothing natural.
The toast was pathetic. Those adults, were friendly with Kate, but they were not her friends. I am certain as she was toasting, (not to them, but about the money spent) they had to be thinking how sad this was.
Good to know the kids have friends over.
"Not a dollar spent wasn't mine." In my mind this awkward syntax translates to, "TLC paid me with a deck."
In her ode to the deck, was there any mention of estimates, how she found the company? My guess is no.
I continue to think about how she used the Gosselin family, most especially Jon. His peaceful laid back family never knew what hit them. This woman who still moans about so much that was lacking in her childhood, made the Gosselin's, most especially Jon make up for it.
And of course the churches, Beth and Bob Carson too, she ran right over them.
Pay no attention to the greed behind the curtain, I am the great and powerful mom of 8 and this is about my children's health. The lawsuit, against the father of her children, which she voluntarily dismissed with prejudice within only a couple of months after she filed the suit, wasn't that also for the health and safety of the children? Not vengeance, not unresolved bitterness or hatred, no it was for the children.
I think all of it, is about the infinite empty unresolved want of little Katie Kreider. The more she alienates, the bigger the emptiness gets.

It doesn't matter. Over time snow weight on even the finest of second story decks or structures can compromise its integrity. I wouldn't mess around with it.

Like others have said, every year local authorities warn people to remove excessive snow from such structures. In some communities you can even be cited for not doing so.

It's going to be a big job to remove the snow and ice from that deck all the time. Add it to the boys' chores.

No one said it does. Huh?

The problem is the empty space underneath. Physics dictates it simply can't hold as much weight as a solid foundation on solid ground.

Obviously, snow is usually not a problem on a structure with a foundation build on solid ground. It's unnecessary to shovel off a porch built directly on the ground. Rarely, enough snow piles up on roofs where it's a good idea to shovel it off.

Trust me, I lived in the snow belt for my entire childhood. Everyone had to shovel off balconies and decks all the time or risk catastrophe. PA gets enough storms a year to keep an eye on it. There are dozens of accidents a year because people don't think.

Yes! Another ridiculous assertion. I'd call it emotionally abusive to her kids and Jon.
It was preposterous to imply that Jon was/is a danger to his own children.

Okay, Gosselin historians (Gosstorians?), can someone tell me what episode this was from?

Jon was talking to TFW about a low fridge with a drawer you pull out for cold drinks that was reachable to the kids, and she scoffed and said something like, what planet are you from? Can you imagine how beaten down that man felt when his wife was repeatedly dismissive of him -- and on camera for the world to see, yet?

*******
On camera and in the filming moment, in front of other people.
I'm pretty sure at the time that I related how I felt for Jon, having an ex that would do the same to me; put me down and marginalize me in front of other adults.
It was mean and cruel, and the fact of the matter was, Jon's suggestion was excellent.
Kate's ignorance and utter disdain for Jon kicked in like an addict mainlining heroin, and her disgust for Jon just came spewing forth, without filter or regard for him.
Her pseudo-apology was self serving and completely inauthentic.

Tucker's Mom (#64), and as I've said before, the most ridiculous part of that suit she filed for her kids' safety is that she left town soon after for some sort of promotional tour. So your 8 kids' safety is in jeopardy, but you feel comfortable hitting the road? With a bodyguard? If you had to leave, why not leave the bodyguard with the kids?

It doesn't matter. Over time snow weight on even the finest of second story decks or structures can compromise its integrity. I wouldn't mess around with it.
*****
The big thing for me with decks and snow is that if you don't get shoveling, you wind up with ice under the snow. That ice is impossible to get off (not going to chip at it and ruin the deck) and you're at the mercy of the sun and temperature.
Slippery!

Last comment on decks and snow-load. PSF is PSF no matter whether a deck is 3 feet off the ground or 20 feet off the ground. (PSF = pounds per square foot) I'm excluding decks built directly on the ground.

This article discusses building codes and PSF.

http://www.decks.com/how-to/636/how-many-psf-does-my-deck-need-to-support

"For a residential deck, the code requires it be designed to support a minimum 40-psf live load. The live load is the external force applied to a deck due to the activities of its use. People, furniture, and any other movable, physical object on the deck are covered under live load. In commercial buildings, the minimum live load required by the International Building Code is determined by the anticipated use of each space, and thus the anticipated density of people in the space. For assembly uses, such as restaurants, churches and music venues, the minimum live load is 100 psf. Conventional deck construction can support greater live loads by using larger dimension lumber or closer spacing of joists and beams. For residential decks designed for entertaining large groups, it’s not a bad idea to overbuild it from the minimum 40 psf required by building codes."

"In regions with heavy snowfall, the snow load may exceed the 40-psf live load. In those instances, allowable spans for larger live loads can substitute for an equivalent snow load. For example, a span table for 60-psf live load could be used for a region with a 60-psf snow load. Some conditions may require additional design consideration, such as areas subject to drifting snow or sliding snow from roofs above. Those loads act on the deck differently and more substantially than live loads."

From the article I posted earlier.

"♦ Don’t shovel your deck to avoid collapse. Building Codes require decks support more snow than most roofs. A properly built deck is not likely to collapse from the weight of snow. Read the engineering details in my blog post last month or just skip to the conclusion: “Here’s a rule of thumb: Your deck rails are probably 36” high. Don’t worry until the snow is above your rails (deeper than 3 feet.) If you can see the rail tops, you’re OK — even with a little rain.” When snow is deeper than 3 feet, begin to worry. When snow is deeper than 3-1/2 feet, begin to shovel."

If her deck was built by professionals (it seems it was) and the proper inspections took place (who knows?) I don't think she has anything to worry about.

I haven’t posted for a long time but read almost daily

When Kate got her new deck and outside kitchen it dawned on me her attitude about new things parallels Matt Roloff. Matt is always in a hurry to get something built whether he needs it or not. Once it’s built (e.g. man cave in an outlining barn) it used a bit and then he forgets about it, moving on to the next project. And he doesn’t maintain anything that he just had to have. All his projects are filmed by TLC, so my guess is TLC is footing the bill for the new must have project.

What does Kate do, she needs a new deck and an outside kitchen. Probably she doesn’t stop and think whether she needs it or more to the point will she use it after the cameras are turned off. She, like Matt, is thinking about the next project that they can get for their house or farm (probably) with TLC picking up the bill.

They’re also sly like a fox. These home improvements has the possibility of increasing the value of their property. And whose will benefit from this, not TLC but Kate or Matt when it comes time to sell. I know there’s always the caveat that they over improved their property and won’t recoup the expenses. My take on this, they’re not thinking about possibility, only the potential return on investment

#47 - Oh, I must be slow. I never put together the verbiage of health and well-being with using money from the kids' 15% fund to build the deck. No way in hell would any judge ever agree that she needed to build this deck for the kids health and well-being. My guess is she just said that to be saying it. She had to make it seem like this deck greatly benefited the kids because she always claims everything she does benefits them. Personally, I don't even think she attempted to use the kid money. She has tremendous savings and a huge yearly income to pay for that deeply discounted deck.

That health and well-being claim is as stupid as her other statement that they will probably never (or rarely) use her "real" kitchen again. That is so dumb.

Does Kate have a grill built-in on that huge stove/oven she has? If she doesn't she was stupid not to get one. I can see why she would want to grill once in a while but like somebody said she cooked the salmon and shrimp in pan on her grill. That is not true grilling. I bet somebody was downstairs grilling the hamburgers while she was doing that.

There is definitely an emptiness in TFW that cannot be filled and we all know she is trying. No self-awareness is only part of the problem. Her issues are only magnified by being on TLC. The Carson family come to mind here. Jodi and Kevin, also. We all know a lot of the story, but may never know all of it. Jon was just not strong enough to withstand the vicious attack. I wonder why Kate didn't put her grill on her front porch before she built the deck. Does anybody know if her porch was larger enough for a grill. I know there was an area to the left when you existed her front door but I don't recall how large it was. I think that would have been much easier to do (if there was room) and then they could have eaten on a picnic table outside her front door. It seems that grilling chicken or other things would be time consuming. I would like to be near the kitchen so I could come in as wanted or needed to prepare the sides. But Kate never complain about being stuck one floor grilling when she wanted to be upstairs doing her normal routine. She only complained about hauling all the stuff down there.

I understand perfectly the weight of snow on a 3 foot deck is the same as a deck at any other higher elevation. No one ever said otherwise.

The issue is if a 3 foot deck collapses because you never bothered to shovel the very heavy snow off, you're unlikely to die from a 3 foot fall. It's very simple.

If her deck is compromised, however, serious injury or death is a real possibilty because it's so high up. Thus, a much longer fall.

The sheep just don't get this. Each 22 or 44 minute episode takes many hours to film. It just gets edited down to vignettes, where you can't or won't appreciate how much is left on the cutting room floor.
The film crews work long, long hours to catch everything. They're not deciding what gets into the final story arc, they just know they have to make sure everything is on film so it's there to choose from.
For hours each day of filming, there are cameras in the face, booms above the head, people milling about all around you, facilities shut down completely and velvet ropes and signage put up so the unwashed masses don't brush up against the talent.
Pick just one of those and it totally alters the experience. Now add them all together and you have an idea how the sausage is made.
Oh, and add on top of that, a rigorous schedule where no matter if you're sick, you must post.

I have never heard of putting a grill and picnic table on a front porch, especially at an upscale home, no matter how convenient it might be.

The grill was in the back, off the daylight basement with the picnic table. That's where the patio is. That is where one usually grills and eats.

Another thing, Kate was acting like the burden of providing food for that deck was soooooo overwhelming. If you are organizish, she could have prepped much of that food the day prior. Also, with a big cookout, don't people usually bring a dish to share? They did not show anybody arriving with anything. Isn't that what "friends" do? I assume she did not prepare all that food but some was brought in, and not by the guests. The cookout was filmed so much of the food was provided by Figure 8 catering, IMO. And all her talk of grilling is ridiculous. Grilling is supposed to be relaxing and sharing time with your guests. She is too uptight so I don't think she does it often.

Just watched the part of the episode where they went to the spa and the girls were getting their nails done. Kate’s doing her usual babbling during the couch interview about the girls choosing their nail colors:

“They have really, really pretty colors, but again, I’m beyond picking for them. Can’t pick clothes, can’t pick nail color, can’t pick book bags, can’t pick anything anymore. I just have to pay for it.”

Then it shows her in the nail salon, talking to the camera man, saying “They don’t realize how lucky they are, because I never ever went to a nail salon till I paid for it myself.”

Then when it goes back to the couch interview, she subtly manages to get a dig at Jon. “If the way MY situation turned out helps them to choose better and be happier and be more successful in marriage and in life...”.

Then it cuts out and it doesn’t it show her finishing the sentence.

WTF does choosing nail colors, book bags, etc. at 11 have to do with their choices in life and whether they have a successful marriage? Good grief!!

I guess if you choose a good nail color (oranges in fall, dark red in winter, light corals in spring, pink in summer) then the chances are that you will select a 'man for all seasons' as well, and the marriage will be successful. Makes sense, right?

At age 11, nail salons (if there even were any around here) was something we didn't do until we got to college, if then. Amazing that most of us managed to choose the right man.

Dumb question -- if you have a second level deck with the railing going all the way to the floor of the deck, to where do you push the snow? Down the steps? You certainly can't hoist shovels of snow over the top of the railing, can you? That would kill your back.

This story is about the show that will be replacing Kate plus 8 Tuesdays at 10pm, starting Feb. 2.

http://www.broadwayworld.com/bwwtv/article/Sneak-Peek-TLC-to-Premiere-New-Series-RATTLED-22-20160108

Seems like TLC wants to get back to the original Jon and Kate dynamic--having babies and family conflicts caused by having babies. This is also the series that the Gardner quadruplets will be appearing in.

From the article:

"This winter TLC explores the scary, exhilarating, frustrating, joyful and ultimately life-changing experience of PARENTHOOD with new series RATTLED. As seen through the lives of four diverse couples from across the country, viewers will go along for THE RIDE as they watch these new parents experience a wide range of challenges, triumphs and milestones, for the first year of their newborns' lives. Executive Produced by Flower Films' Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen, the new series premieres Tuesday, February 2 at 10/9c.

The couples featured all face different circumstances as they navigate how their new baby will fit into their already established lives. Whether it is balancing work and their newborn, feeling pressure from family members' about how they think the baby should be raised or making sure that their relationships with their significant others remain intact, they will never forget this period of adjustment in their lives.

The series will follow the evolution of these families as their babies enter the world, and what that means to each of them."

The rest of the article describes each of the 4 couples.

She's shallow, and she owns it. I suppose spas and other upkeep might help you become a trophy wife someday to someone 30 years your senior, if that's what she wants for her girls.

A good man loves you for who you are, not the spas you can afford.

We have a plastic snow shovel that is used to clear the deck and stairs after each snow fall. Like most other split-level style houses in our area, the deck is right off of the upper level back door, so it's our "emergency exit" in case of fire. Never a bad idea to keep any and all exits from a house clear in case of emergency!

Mary Ann said...

poor Kate, to get to the grill she had to leave the kitchen , down the hall, through the family room , down a long flight of stairs and through the unfinished basement. The same route she would have to take to reach her young sons in case of an emergency...hmmm. No worries there I guess.

Leslie said...

I didn't say that she should have put the picnic table on the front porch. The table could have gone on the front lawn. I only said the grill. Nobody could see it. In fact she has an extremely large tree in front of it.

Your deck rails are probably 36” high.

******
This article says nothing about ICE. This is frequently a problem in this area. Snow is one thing. Ice is an entirely different creature. We have snow, topped by ice, and very often a heavy crust of ice that is difficult, if not impossible, to remove. It brings down power lines and trees and I have seen photos of decks that have collapsed under the weight of snow and ice, regardless if building codes were followed or not. I just can't see her outside chopping through thick layers of ice. In the case of snow and ice, she does have something to worry about.

Dumb question -- if you have a second level deck with the railing going all the way to the floor of the deck, to where do you push the snow? Down the steps? You certainly can't hoist shovels of snow over the top of the railing, can you? That would kill your back.

*******
There's a space below the bottom horizontal rail and the deck itself. You can push under that, and through the vertical rails.
You can also shovel and throw over the top.

OK, we'll trust YOU over civil engineers and folks who make their living building decks

&&&&

Actually civil engineers and folks who make their living on decks aren't all on the same page. PJ found some who are comfortable with snowfall, fair enough, I can show you several other sites from around the web in which those very same people strongly recommend snow be removed from decks. Emergency officials also recommend it and some towns will cite you if you don't. I don't know what to tell you other than I can't tell you how many times I heard on the news growing up "shovel your decks". Reasonable engineers can disagree.

There does seem to be agreement on two issues: first, a well made deck is better than a poorly made one, and two, routine inspections of high decks are not only recommended but crucial. Kate did the first, but I doubt she has the brains to do the second.

Been awhile since I've commented, but I've been lurking!

So we know by now Kate has no self-awareness, but that whole deck party just boggles my mind. I would feel humiliated having to tell the TLC producers uh, I don't have any family or friends to invite so I guess I'll just invite the parents of the kids' friends. And oh my goodness, her toast was one of the most awkward things I have ever seen. Look at the body language and faces of the guests--they look so awkward. Here she is talking about the importance of friends and family...to a bunch of strangers. And you KNOW that they at least appreciated the irony.

I'm also willing to bet she didn't interact with them at all. Bet she hid in the kitchen and tried to appear busy all the time. She is so socially awkward, even interacting with the TLC crew. What a sad, sad life.

Other things of note: oh my goodness, when Leah called her out for gender stereotyping I wanted to cheer. I've noticed Leah has replaced Hannah as the golden child. I've seen some real tension between Kate and Hannah over the new episodes. Colin is either drugged or needs help STAT. He looks downright catatonic during the couch interviews. Magic show was further proof she doesn't know her kids and it was an idea from producers. The boys didn't even like magic and they didn't want to do a show. And grrr, typical Kate had to make it a competition. "Give coins to the one you like best!" She makes EVERYTHING a competition.

I'm babbling (and could go on)--but I had a lot to catch up on. Happy New Year, ladies (and gents) of the veranda!

Oh, for sure! When we were searching for a new home, I wouldn't even consider one with a detached garage, no matter how wonderful the property was! We did find a house, a gorgeous historic home with four finished levels, two stairways circular stairways off the main foyer, brand-new state of the art kitchen, stunning office with fireplace, original woodwork and trim, everything you could ever want in a home. However, the garage was a converted carriage house quite a distance from the main house, and even though the asking price was ridiculously reasonable, we didn't make an offer. There was no place to build another garage, and I just didn't want to make the hike through the snow to the garage, especially on brutal winter mornings. Kate doesn't have that far to go to the garage, but I'm betting that some kind of an enclosed space leading to the garage might be her next project.

Snow and ice on a deck. Articles mention snow, but nothing about the TYPE of snow. There is a light powdery snow and two feet or more likely wouldn't be an issue, and then there is a wet, very heavy snow that is very common in this area, and only a foot or so would add considerable weight to the deck. If you add ice to that, you could have a recipe for disaster if it's not taken care of immediately.

I'm sure she will figure it all out. If she has any problems, there's always Deckdude Matt to help 'doll' Kate with any concerns. Or she can ask her tweeties, who are always at her beck and call. I know, I know, Gladys would love to be her beck and call girl.

Off topic--
I just finished reading Dogtripping by David Rosenfelt, an account of moving the 25 dogs in his and his wife's rescue foundation from California to Maine. It is amusing, touching, sometimes heartbreaking, but one passage caught my interest in relation to reality tv and this blog. While trying to work out the incredibly complicated logistics of the move, they considered making it a reality show so the production company would provide the transportation and staff. They decided against it because they were uncomfortable with the constant scrutiny and felt "the chaos of a camera crew in our house with all the dogs was too horrible to even contemplate". The final straw was that the network insisted on "human conflict", so they ditched the idea and elected to fund and staff the move themselves.

These people wouldn't subject their dogs to reality tv while Kate serves her children up on a silver platter.

I don't know about your area, Tucker's Mom, but while it's a good idea in places where power goes out frequently and emergency electricity is needed (hospitals, etc), I'm not so sure that it's worth the expense here. She certainly has doubles of everything else!

There isn't room on my bottom rail, but then again, I didn't have Matt Dude install our deck. I guess it just wasn't constructed correctly because the bottom rail is just inches from the floor of the deck! Yes, I just went outside and checked! I'm always reluctant to walk outside around the deck area in the dead of winter because I'm afraid I will find more cats in search of a home.

Ice! Ugh! I remember when I rescued my strays. Has it really been two winters ago? We had several ice storms that year, and there we were, chopping a path just narrow enough for the cats to get to the enclosed shelter I had constructed up against the house. I pitied them trying to walk over ice getting to a shelter. Then I felt sorry for them having to live inside the shelter, and you know the rest. I brought Fantine and Cosette inside when the temperatures were dangerously low, and let them outside when it warmed up a bit. It got cold again and I brought them inside and decided to adopt them, only to find out that in the short time they were outside, one of them managed to find an eager hormonal male in the neighborhood. Much to my surprise, I was presented with kittens in the bedroom. Those kittens have grown into beautiful cats, and they are seriously spoiled, live only indoors, having been adopted by a loving, caring family with two great kids who adore them. All's well that ends well, but no more kittens! Fantine and Cosette are very happy here. I am so glad you all talked me into adopting them!

Deck question...our deck is wood. With the new type of deck that Kate got, will ice and snow melting pellets stain and/or pit the deck?

Article about TLC general manager,Nancy Daniels, answering reporters' questions about how the network handled the Duggar scandal.

http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/tlc-duggar-scandal-television-critics-association-tca-1201674570/

From the article:

“Every decision we’ve made has been done very thoughtfully and very carefully about what is in the best interests of the people involved and the network,” Daniels said. “Our first priority is making sure that there’s a health and well-being of our families first and foremost. We feature stories of different families with real people and real things happen.”

As the panel ended, the final question once again diverted from “Single Dad Seeking,” asking Daniels about the future of the Duggars at TLC, namely Jill and Jessa, who recently starred in their own three-part special.

“We just aired the three specials during the holidays. They did very well,” a clearly-frustrated Daniels said, citing the viewership of more than three million. “The audience clearly cares about these girls.”

As for the possibility of more episodes or a series centering around the sisters, Daniels said, “We’re still talking and considering it, but we have not made a decision yet.”

As the article pointed out TLC will also have a new series called "Single Dads Dating". You can read about that here:

http://www.broadwayworld.com/bwwtv/article/TLC-to-Premiere-New-Series-SINGLE-DAD-SEEKING-This-Spring-20160108

From that article:

"SINGLE DAD SEEKING... (working title) follows five single fathers working hard to raise their kids. As they strive to provide the ideal lives for their sons and daughters, they each feel that a critical piece of their family is missing. These dedicated dads are searching to find not only love in their lives, but also a woman willing to love their children. Enter five women, each without children of her own, seeking her happily ever after with a responsible, caring man. In addition to finding love, these women sincerely want to be mothers. None of them have found the opportunity-until now."

Guess TLC wasn't interested in a show about Kate called "Single Mom Seeking" and they decided to go with the male version. I do wonder if all her whining about how HARD it was for her to find a man because of her kids actually gave someone at TLC the idea for this show.

I haven't watched any episodes for gosh, I couldn't tell you how long. I just can't stand listening to her, but I do enjoy admin's recaps. Did she actually believe that the Blues Brothers were Elvis?

Before the day is over I just want to say Happy Birthday, Elvis. You changed music history.

He would have been 81 today.

RIP

There's a space below the bottom horizontal rail and the deck itself. You can push under that, and through the vertical rails.
You can also shovel and throw over the top.

++++++++++++++

There isn't room on my bottom rail, but then again, I didn't have Matt Dude install our deck. I guess it just wasn't constructed correctly because the bottom rail is just inches from the floor of the deck!
--------------
It's only a few inches, but you can push the snow under, or between the vertical bars (balusters). We have a metal railing that was pre-formed with a small space below the lower bar. I believe there are strict regulations for deck railings, like there are for cribs. You can't allow enough space for a baby or child to get their body through and then hang from their head, so spacing is crucial.

I just realized that it would be harder to clear a deck with the super-expensive see-through panels for railings, because everything would have to go under the bottom or over the top. No between-the-balusers for those special snowflakes.

The website someone posted recommended a corn boom for clearing snow from a deck. Synthetic bristles aren't stiff enough and will get all bent if there is heavy snow.

I cleared a couple of cars that were covered in very wet snow. I gave up on the brush and used my arm to sweep the snow aside, where it naturally made big snowballs, like you'd make if you were making a snowman. I then carried the snowballs in my arms over to the snowbank and dropped them on. It worked better than brushing in onto the ground and then having to shovel up the mess.

“We just aired the three specials during the holidays. They did very well,” a clearly-frustrated Daniels said, citing the viewership of more than three million. “The audience clearly cares about these girls.”

Daniels is confusion "caring" with watching a car wreck. In other words, yes, there will be more filming of the "girls".

Her next project will be to have them install a moving sidewalk in the house and around the grounds so that she doesn't have to walk anywhere. Heated and covered of course!

I picture Kate in one of those sedan chairs with poles with two servants on each side carrying her from room to room Cleopatra-ish style. Ironically they're called 'litters'. lol

Sometimes I think I shouldn't read Kate's TL, but it can be interesting.

@CarrieTBow @Kateplusmy8 hopefully when you reach your 40's like Kate Gosselin has, you'll learn how to spell. It's not funny, it's pathetic

I checked this tweeter's profile (non-fan) and saw this:

Hever Castle. Tuder England

I really don't think that one should discuss Kate's spelling when such an error occurs on your own Twitter profile. It's TUDOR England!

I see that Gladys tweeted a cute dog photo to Kate, encouraging her to get another puppy. Anything to get her attention, right, Milo?

Kate replied to the tweeter who tweeted about avocado being toxic to birds:

@mommylajes85 I know!!! Thank you ... He stays far away from them... (Far enough!)

Aaden was standing right next to her with Zorro on his shoulder while she was scooping out the avocados. How is that "far away(far enough)"?

He was closer to the bowl that had the avocado in it than he was when he supposedly flew down onto the birthday cake.

I guess since Shoka knows to get out of the way when she drives the car down the driveway, Zorro also knows that avocado is toxic to him so he stays "far away" from it.

Yes! Way back when I interviewed celebrities for a national magazine, I had the pleasure of meeting him and sitting down and talking with him at length. He was very nice, gracious, humble, down-to-earth, and so funny! I was sad when he passed.

They will include built-in sunlamps, of course, so she can tan at the same time.

I can't imagine Elvis at 81. It just doesn't work. There is a website that did age progression, and I must say, though, that he really didn't look too bad as a senior citizen.

@kateplusmy8 I must say that you have changed a lot! You've gotten funnier. I find myself laughing at something you say on each episode. 😆

@msgoody2shoes21 @Kateplusmy8 I've always loved her tongue N cheek sarcastic humor! Some take everything she says so serious &miss the LOLs!

Yes, hearing her calling the boys magic show "lame" was just knee-slapping, belly-laughing humor, right?

Milo-I would say her "tongue N cheek sarcastic humor" is more "foot N mouth hurtful remarks about her children.

But that's right, you don't care about the kids feelings any way, do you?

Just to emphasize more than the big projects, the girls were really mean to the boys at the magic show. They 'Booed' them, threw the coins at them, dissed the tricks and ate the chocolate meant for tips. They were a little nicer afterward, but honestly, that family is really pitted boys vs girls and twins vs tups. Now it's also vs Mommy. I know this was discussed upthread but in case anyone didn't see that part.

Oh- and I didn't see Deanna at the party, and I think the lady in yellow was not Carla- I thought it was at first.
