Ratings are out for the week. Viewers are up just a little, but share is down quite a bit.

1.186 million viewers and a 0.35 share compared to 1.159 million viewers and a 0.40 share last week.

The Little Couple managed 1.811 million viewers in the slot before K+8, so 625,000 people either turned off the TV or switched channels rather than continue watching Kate.

Molly12 said...

According to Showbuzzdaily, Little Couple got 1,811 viewers and Kate got 1,186. She lost a good chunk of viewers but I still think she got a bump from The Little Couple being the lead in.

Kate has been a multi-millionaire for years. Saved my ass for this deck. How dare she.

And I thought it was weird how they didn't show Kate interacting with her "friends" at all. That deck is going to be a big headache for that family. They will have fights over getting the snow off, sweeping it, removing and putting back all the pillows, blankets, and cushions, who sits where, etc.

Does everybody think it was a huge mistake for Kate not to put her table and kitchen under cover? I think that was so stupid. Who wants to eat with the sun pouring down on them. Or how is Kate going to grill in the rain. Or maybe I missed the kitchen being covered. She is so stupid.

Leslie said...

It does not surprise me she got high numbers from the Little Couple. But how embarrassing over 600,000 tvs turned Kate off.

TLC stinks said...

So having her follow The Little Couple plumped up her ratings slightly. She still has the one million watching. Is that enough for TLC considering her salary, freebies and perks? I read in an article by someone who works in reality tv that typically it costs $400k per episode to film a one hour reality show.

From Paul Peterson's Facebook:

A Distinction Without A Difference
Highly trained young performers who come to the public’s attention are, at the core, little different from those children in the world of Reality Television when it comes down to the potent effects of Fame.
You may argue that the professional kids are different than untrained Reality Show kids when it comes to Fame, but are they really? Fame Won Young has the same long-term affect on children whether they are athletes, singers, background performers or anchor stars on scripted offerings called Reality TV.
It comes down to being “Other.” “Different.” A “victim” of parental misconduct. Impressions created on television are darn near permanent. It’s the “bug in amber” effect. What is done to a child, whether making them public figures without compensation or using them to advance the status of the family, ends up being on the shoulders of the child so impacted. Who, after all, takes the time to make distinctions as to what portion of responsibility the well-known child celebrity must bear?
Let me repeat: Children cannot provide Informed Consent. Children are the Property of their parents. Children are not responsible for the contractual terms that bind them to an entertainment offering. It is the Children who must endure the affects of early Fame for the rest of their lives. So, who speaks for them?
A Minor Consideration stands up for the child subjected to Uncompensated Fame. If they have labored without work-place protections, an acknowledgment that their contributions materially enhanced the value of the presentation, or if their value is paid to the parents who sold them in the first place, we solidly stand behind the Rights of the Child.
Continuing Fame does not discriminate between children protected under union contracts or the children absent State Law or Common Sense. A child engaged in a work-place where every adult is compensated is WORKING.
What is so hard to understand? Paul Petersen

No surprise the episode got a bump.

redbird said...

Did anyone see the man holding a squirming baby on the deck?

To me he looked like Jon. Dressed like Jon.

But I know it wasn't.

Seeing her toast to her "family and friends" and the deck was awkward and cringe worthy. Those people did not look like her friends nor family. I think they were Figure 8 production people and their kids or possible the deck people.

redbird said...

One day there will be an episode of her secretly saving for an elevator for the house.

She said they are all running out of personal space??

7,000 square ft. house for 9 people? Oops, 1 more. Steve.

So, she needs 10,000 sq. ft. now. She said on the deck that she wasn't never moving, so I guess TLC can just add on when she has secretly saved money.

Rainbirdie said...

There are lesbians in PA? And they have decks built? You learn something new every day...

Rainbirdie said...

Of course she was secretly saving for the deck - that's why she was only able to take luxury vacations to Mexico & Florida in 2015. I wonder what she actually had to give up to "save" for the deck - other than her kids privacy & dignity.

fidosmommy said...

Another huge problem with it: it's not close enough to the pool. Cookouts go hand in hand with pools and to have it be this separate space not connected to the pool area makes combining the pool with a cookout disjointed.

************
How better for Kate to control when her kids will be eating and when they may go into the pool area during "feeding" time? Since I sincerely doubt there are many family and friends attending Gosselin cookouts, this upper deck is there for Kate, which means it's there for 2 reasons alone: having the best and having a reason to control her kids. How unsettling for her that a child or 8 might walk 20 feet to the pool to swim when she's feeding them! Or, children who are in the pool area dare to enter the grilling area before 6:03 p.m.

I just re-read Kate's blog post, and this one line stood out for me:

"This deck addition was a financial investment that worried me initially, but it turned out to be the best investment I’ve ever made in our family’s health and wellbeing. When phrased that way, it may sound a bit dramatic, but it’s not even a slight exaggeration."

WTF does getting a new deck have to do with the family's health and well-being?

Ha, I'm wondering that too.

How does he know they weren't just sisters, or roommates? How did this topic come up?

And why did it stick in his mind so much that he brings it up later? He doth protest too much. It must have been a big deal to him to be working with the lesbian profession to bring it up later. In this day in age for most people they don't even notice or think twice about providing customer service to people of whatever orientation, and in most cases you don't know or think to speculate about the home owners and their relationship. Unless you're Kim Davis.

_____

Kate writing that is so over the top; it is crazy. But I also think she meant what I posted about a day or so ago. I think that deck is not only for easier grilling and dining but most of all for her kids to scatter to. Heck, Kate even referenced this in the show when the kids were on their scooters. She doesn't want the kids in her kitchen sitting room off the kitchen. Their noise and fights can now be easily taken outside. I think that is why she wrote it is for her family's health and well-being. The more the family is apart apparently and not able to fight like animals, the better off they all are. How sad! That house has a living room, dining room, kitchen sitting room, the tv family room, basement tv room, & pool area to go to. That is five rooms for the kids to go to inside. Not to mention their bedrooms and 24 acres. But apparently they NEEDED this deck for their health & well-being.

And did you hear her say that they had to take the food, dishes and silverware through the UNfinished basement. Again, WTF? Her basement has a finished family room, bedroom, kitchen, and bath. And I can't believe she did not keep dishes and silverware in her kitchen downstairs so she would not have to haul them upstairs. She could have just washed them or loaded the dishwasher downstairs and kept them there.

Where is she going to store those pillows, blankets and cushions? Will the children have to carry those things (and possibly chairs) downstairs to the unfinished basement? Enclosed storage space was not mentioned in the reviews I read. If the deck faces north she can get by without covering it from the sun, but it will need protection from rain and snow.

Redbird (#7), thank you for that thoughtful post from Paul Petersen. I was struck by that “bug in amber” comment. It's what so many of us have said: these shows are preserved forever. An adult J may someday be watching that episode with his wife and kids, and see his mother say to him as a toddler,
"I don't want to hear you breathe." Who knows how each of the 8 children will react to those filmed memories as they get older? But smart money says, damage has been, and will be, done.

We have a vacation home with an upper level deck and there is a set of steps at both ends that go down to the yard and patio beneath. According to code at the time the deck was built, a permit would not have been granted if there had been no egress, for the reasons you stated.

Kate's deck has two staircases. One is a spiral one that is by the pool and the main one is built in the backyard. If you know where the bird cage was inside, you could draw an imagery line from that corner through the deck and that is where the staircase would be. I hoped that makes sense. Otherwise, never mind!

--------------------------
Lots of people have decks without stairs - they're usually called balconies. They're very common in apartment buildings.

We live in a townhouse with a walk-out basement. We have a balcony/deck over the walk-out, and a small patio below. It was part of the original construction and is quite common and legal. That said, it is also small - the width of our living room and maybe 8 feet from building wall to outer railing.

If you google apartment balcony you'll see lots of images of them. A lot of them are much smaller than ours - only room for a table for two, or maybe two lounge chairs.

I agree that for a huge deck on a huge property, it would be odd not to have staircases. And other posters have mentioned that Kate's new deck has it/them. It's a measure of her poor story telling/photography that we have no idea that the deck is U-shaped or that there are stairways. If she'd posted an "after" picture to go with her "before" one, she could have saved herself much more than 1000 words!

A deck is a deck. A balcony is a balcony. I would never call an apartment balcony a deck, nor would I call a deck on a house the size of Kate's "a balcony." Perhaps different areas of the country call them different things, but around here, balconies are found in townhouses or apartments or in hotel rooms and usually have no steps leading from them.

On the other hand, decks are found in private homes (not apartment buildings) and if it's a second floor deck there are almost always steps leading to the ground level. Decks are also called decks even if they are on the same level as the main floor of the house.

A deck by any other name...:)

The deck is beautiful although it appeared to me there was either a wet spot or a stain already on a plank. She's gonna find out that grilling, grease and fake wood do not mix. I learned this with Trex. The grease stains are permanent and no matter how careful you are, that deck will gets stained and bleached by the sun over time. At least with a real wood deck you can restain it. The deck is pretty for now, though. Oh, they probably used synthetic stones for the columns which are nice and look real, but the labor for that is plenty. After seeing the full deck on that video, I think I may have been low with my $25k estimate. It is a CERTAINTY it was not lower than that for materials and labor. The rock work and columns may have cost as much as the deck. I've done my share of renovations.

We'd looked into the fake wood when we were getting a new deck but with all the issues that came up with it we elected to go with real wood.

Staining was a big concern - a kid drops a platter of bratwurst and now you have grease spattered permanently all over the deck
Scratching also a big concern - dogs, kids dragging chairs, moving an umbrella or chimnea
It gets really hot in the afternoon sun - too hot to use until mid-evening, certainly not anything you could go on barefoot
It fades and discolors over time - that would make me crazy

Once I saw all the negatives of the fake wood, it seemed like the expense of real wood was worth it.

Although she probably doesn't care. She'll scream at the kids about everything. And then get TLC to pay for a new deck in a few years.

It'll be an episode idea...the Gosselins are re-doing their deck!

Short piece. Couple of interesting points about the differences between decks and balconies.
-----------------------------
Good article, but I think the line between deck and balcony is a bit fuzzy. Our balcony / deck is a bit larger than a balcony, but very small for a deck. People do use them for "social areas", and they are partly covered. Most people here call them "upper decks". What are referred to as "lower decks" are actually covered patios (covered by the underside of the "upper deck").

My earlier post was in answer to a post that said "a deck must have stairs to the ground floor to be safe / legal". OK, just call it a balcony and it changes from an abomination to OK.

Actually, there are safety issues to having barbecues on balconies, especially if they are covered or partly covered. Our fire department is fighting a losing battle over that issue, and we have had apartment buildings burn down in our town because of it.

@Kateplusmy8 Hi, Kate. Enjoyed the building of the deck. You will get much enjoyment out of it. Beats sitting on grass or even cement!

Here is one who thinks that Kate has no chairs pool-side! Duh!

Kate, when on television with bills in her purse that she couldn't pay, moaned that she had no money. If she had dreamed about building the deck when she moved into the house, was she still putting money aside during the time when she was destitute? It's a darn good thing that she hadn't started construction on the deck or she wouldn't have been able to pay those bills.

About the deck composition. Yes, it's warranted and it doesn't need to be stained. It does, however, scratch very easily, gets extremely hot, and it is slippery when wet. A friend of mine installed it and it's very nice. I have a wooden deck, just plain old garden-variety wood that needs to be stained about every ten years. It does not get hot, it does not scratch, and it is not slippery when wet. I guess it's kind of a trade-off.

Sorry, Mel. I read from the bottom up (long-time habit) and didn't see your post when I commented. Yes, those are the same concerns that my friend has with her deck. I forgot to mention that there is one big spot on her deck when a huge piece of barbecued chicken slid off a plate. Even though it was wiped up in time, there is a permanent stain. She covered it up with a clay planter!

I'll stick to my real wood deck, even though this is the summer it will need staining. At least we can walk on it with our bare feet.

((((((((((((

Quite a few apartment buildings here do not allow grills on balconies. Those who had grills had to discard them. Maintenance makes routine visits to make sure that all units are in compliance. Grills on balconies can't be hidden, no matter how hard you try to cover them up!

Entertainment venues have balconies, not decks, and cabins on ships have balconies, but the outside areas around the ship are decks. Go figure.

I hope she knows the maintenance involved with teak. In a few years, the discoloration and weathering will drive her nuts. I got tired of doing it, and just let it age naturally, but with Kate who likes everything pristine and new, it will really bother her.

The estimate of $25,000 doesn't nearly cover it, unless it was hugely discounted. I know what my friend's deck cost, and that figure can easily be doubled. Add the cost of the furniture, and she's up to $75,000. She really did a lot of piecin and patchin to pay for that deck and furniture.

Dmasy said...

I know nothing about the brand of composite decking that Kate used. I do know about Trex brand. We used it to re-build two docks.

We did the work ourselves. It is very friendly to work with.

1. Yes, slippery when wet. There is a texture in it that helps somewhat.

2. Yes, it fades. Our red wood color became a tannish color in about 3 years of exposure to Illinois weather.

3. It stains. Thoroughly. Permanently. Any oil (bait!) will stain.

4. No mentioned yet -- I hope Kate has been told. They can melt from a flame. We had to replace several boards after a 4th of July. We thought it would be safe for kids and sparklers on the dock. The Trex planks was pitted with melted spots.

5. They can crack or break. We also replaced a board when a 3-year-old missed the water when throwing rocks. On fist sized rock landed hard on the dock and created a lovely hole.

Just some reality. Does not mean that the product isn't a good one. It just isn't an "orgasmic" miracle.

"I don't want to hear you breathe." Who knows how each of the 8 children will react to those filmed memories as they get older? But smart money says, damage has been, and will be, done.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your welcome, FlimsyFlamsy. I can't imagine the pain of Adult J and his small children watching that particular episode and his mother, THEIR grandmother, telling their father, I don't want to hear you breathe.
What will be the reaction of the grandkids? What if they have the look of what? and then realize their grandmother didn't want their father to even breathe. No breath, means death. Then they realize this and they start to choke up and the real tears come out and drop at a rapid pace.
They rush to their dad's arms and they cry, Grandmother did want you to breathe? What if you would of died, daddy??
TFW's abuse is the gift that keeps on giving.
Ironically, it could be the worst thing. If they forget the sunscreen, it's got the potential for terrible sun damage. There are also some safety hazards already discussed, like fire, or falls from the second story after a few beers or even sober falls.
I think a party area on your property is a lovely idea, as usual though she picks a plan that makes the least amount of sense.
Kate doesn't care about sun damage. She's been fake baking for years now, and lets herself burn in the sun all the time.
It's unfathomable in this day and age that anyone wouldn't protect themselves.
Thanks for the link. I jumped directly to the party. She said a total of thirty people attended. The issue is the second story deck. Not decks in general. For goodness sake we have a deck, as many homes do, but it is only two feet off the ground. It's unlikely if you sat on the ledge and slipped you would die or even be hurt. We do not have a deck that wraps halfway around our second story and would involve a 15 foot fall, as theirs does. I don't recall any of the posters saying they had second story decks.
Also, I assume that of those posters, if any have a second story deck, they don't also have eight kids. It's one thing to have a deck with two or three rowdy kids to keep an eye on. Quite another with eight, plus forthcoming grandchildren.
I can be nervous about what I like to be nervous about. Getting into a car is usually a necessity. A SECOND STORY deck with eight kids about is not, when you have a perfectly good pool area on the ground level to build something. That's my opinion and I have every right to have it.
TLC stinks said...
I watched the entire video. The magic show build up and the actual show and her fake over concern was dumb and the whole thing was boring. And yet ANOTHER visit to Party City. I bet she used TLC gift cards like she did for the luggage.
She also slipped up by using "WE went a little overboard" when Mady questioned about the deck blankets. Who is the "we"?
So I guess they pulled out one chair to assemble and the "helpers" did the rest because there was a shit load of boxes. She also had some resin wicker furniture on the deck.
So the Korean looking guy with baby was a slap to Jon, IMO.
Of course for the party you'd have to include the Figure 8 crew and Steve. Marley was there (apparently the ONLY friend of Mady and Cara's and some moms with kids (tup friends).
Except for eating, all the kids were down at the pool. The kids had to come up, wet, to plate their food. I don't get all her talk about convenience. It certainly was not for the kids.
All in all, she was attempting in this episode to show off the new calm Kate but she still yelled and barked orders and seldom touched her kids. It was b.o.r.i.n.g and nothing new except her fawning over her new deck. I don't see how much longer people are going to care how this woman spends money and yells at her kids. There is no way she can rehabilitate her image as much as she tries to rewrite history or referring to herself as a new, calm Kate. It just ain't so.
First of all, let me get that little bit of vomit out of my mouth. Blech.
Now, I doubt if she had this dream deck in her head for more than about six months before she had it built. If her mind was brimming with ideas for the perfect deck for seven long years like she said it was, you can damn sure guarantee all she would have had to do back then was to pick up her sixth pink iphone and tell Jen what she wanted and she would have built it for her right then and there. So nope, once again she's lying through her veneers. She probably saw a deck at some hotel she was staying at one of her vacation spots last spring and decided she wanted one just like it or better. As always, she puts so much emphasis on how long she's wanted it, you have to know the exact opposite is true.
I'll lay odds she wrangled it out of TLC in lieu of or in addition to a paycheck and then negotiated another deal with the deck and lumber company to build it for almost next to nothing. I'm guessing the only effort she put into the entire project was rubbing the TLC magic with a 'g' lamp with her french tipped talons.
That's how Kate Gosselin rolls.
For your drive-by, I have a two story deck. It pays to be cautious and not lean on the railings. The other issue is someone slipping. Oh for the love of Jesus. Newsfeeds are also full of car accidents and crime.
&&&&
You can't possibly be equating an unnecessary luxury second story deck that eight kids will be up and down on with crime or driving a car. You can't possibly be doing that.
You can't possibly be suggesting everyone move to Manhattan where you don't need a car. What about farmers and ranchers? Shall they give up their lifestyle and careers, which requires a car, to live in a large city in which public transportation is widely available? You know full well that's absurd.
Classic case of confusing the issue. The fact that cars are dangerous does not mean a second story luxury deck is not dangerous or at least unwise.
I can't find the original post on this, but it seems like this person always has something condescending to say, and it's almost always directed at admin. Sounds like somebody has a chip on their shoulders about something! I didn't see any humble-bragging, just comments about the pros and cons of composite decks from people who have had experience with them.
I'm with admin on this one, especially if there are many children who will be using the deck. Second floor (and higher) decks and balconies make me as nervous as a cat with a long tail in a room full of rocking chairs. I recently was looking at a property with a friend of mine. It was a lovely place, with a deck off the kitchen keeping area. We walked out to the deck, and I leaned back to look at the house, barely touching the railing, and it was loose. Very loose. My friend yelled, and I called the listing agent and told her that they better get that repaired ASAP because it's a huge liability on their part and someone will get hurt. I would have hated to see a kid break that railing and fall to the concrete patio below.
Kate may be in all her glory to be able to do her sunning there, but when that deck gets very hot, she may not enjoy it so much at all. I wonder if she did research on a composite deck. If you're going to be tanning and enjoying a warm summer day, I like to sit on the lounge chair within a few feet of the pool. That way when it gets hot, I just have to take a few steps to cool off in the water. I really wonder just how much the kids will use that deck, especially if they spend the majority of their time in the pool. Oh well, as long as it benefits their health and wellness I suppose it's all worth it.
And you bring up another big drawback of a second story or higher deck. Maintenance. With a first floor deck you can let things go until they break and it's not a big deal to fix it when you get to ti. With a second story deck, you better believe you should be going around doing a thorough inspection of it every 6 months or more to make sure nothing is loose, rotting, unstable or poses any other safety hazard. Especially with heavy use from eight kids and weathering. Do I honestly believe Kate is the type to keep up with such a schedule or would even be able to recognize problems before they strike? Nope. And normally it's okay to discover a problem once it's already happened. With a second story, you're risking your life if you don't see the problem ahead of time. No thanks.
I didn't see humble bragging either. I saw a discussion, and it turned out to be a very interesting one.
There are plenty of people out there who would never raise children in a city because of crime rates and would judge you if you chose to do so and taking such risks.
&&&&
Again you're confusing the issue. The fact that it's unsafe to live in a high crime area doesn't make a second story luxury deck safe. I don't know why this is so hard to grasp. When one of those kids falls backwards over that railing because they decided to sit on it, you're regret it.
And by the way, I live in a very safe neighborhood, with a very low crime rate. I wouldn't want to live in a high crime area either, who would, but cities are big places and crime tends to be isolated to certain pockets, and usually targeted to those people already know.
My niece rented a nice home for her family, husband and two children, ages 2 and 3, until the house they were building was completed. In a pre-rental walk-through, I noticed a door on the second floor and carefully opened it, hoping it went somewhere (not like the Winchester Mansion) and there was a small deck there with a railing. It looked like it had not been very well maintained. I told her to ask permission of the owner to install a lock inside that could only be opened with a key, and also a bolt at the top, and she should keep that door locked at all times because there was no reason at all to use that deck (balcony).
I would have had nightmares every night, worrying about those two young children opening that door and accessing that deck. It was a risk that one just doesn't take.
Thanks for posting this. We have an electric pool cover (not humble bragging) which is wonderful for keeping the water at a comfortable temperature if it gets chilly overnight. It also keeps the leaves and other debris out of the pool, especially during summer storms. It already had been installed when we purchased the property. However, even though we keep it maintained and have it checked regularly, before anyone goes into the pool, I shut off the power supply to it. I am not taking any chances.
Quite a few apartment buildings here do not allow grills on balconies. Those who had grills had to discard them. Maintenance makes routine visits to make sure that all units are in compliance. Grills on balconies can't be hidden, no matter how hard you try to cover them up!
--------------------
I'm in a condominium, and we used to have a bylaw against it. It was repealed in a hotly contested vote. Fortunately the person who really wanted the change has installed a patio and now grills on that. Propane barbecues or barbecues under a ceiling (roof overhang or the bottom of another balcony) are especially unsafe.
-----------------
I was one of the posters who has a second-floor balcony/deck. We're in a 55+ complex. People do have grandchildren visit, but they're pretty careful about children on the second floor whatsit. Children seem to prefer the ground floor, where they can run and ride bikes and play, to the smallish balconies.
As for humble bragging: I did talk about high-cost see-thorough railings, but I didn't say I had them, and I don't. Fortunately there're out of the question because of the building we live in, or my husband and I might be hotly debating whether to install them.
As for the second-story deck, her kids' safety has never, ever been a priority with Kate. I'd like to see the insurance she has on them. They'd probably be worth a mint if anything happened to any one of them.
