Veteran's Day

On this special day, we honor veteran Lieutenant Colonel Michael Strobl, our military parents, siblings and friends, and all those who served.

Odds are you don't know the name Michael Strobl. But you may have heard of the essay he wrote, A Marine's Journey Home, which was subsequently turned into the moving film Taking Chance. Occasionally, there are "reality" stories that should be told. This was one of them.

Wrote Strobl: "I didn't know how to express my sympathy for their loss and my gratitude for their sacrifice. Now, however, they were repeatedly thanking me for bringing their son home and for my service. I was humbled beyond words. I told them that I had some of his things and asked if we could find a quiet place. The five of us ended up in what appeared to be a computer lab -- not what I had envisioned for this occasion.

After we had arranged five chairs around a small table, I told them about our trip. I told them how, at every step, Chance was treated with respect, dignity, and honor. I told them about the staff at Dover and all the folks at Northwest Airlines. I tried to convey how the entire nation -- from Dover to Philadelphia to Minneapolis to Billings and Riverton -- expressed grief and sympathy over their loss."

Taking Chance is available around the web including on Netflix, Amazon, and HBOgo.

Not true. I was once bent over taking a picture of the bully when I hit the thing on the screen that makes the camera flip...AHHHHHHHHHHH! Let's just say that women over 50 should NEVER EVER see themselves or be photographed from that angle. The only way instagram would have helped was if it could have blurred me out completely. If I were ever going to skype I would do it laying flat on my back so all the skin is where God meant it to be!

Independence? Really? I wouldn't call depending on cooks, nannies, housekeepers, maintenance workers, gardeners and her sheeple as being signs of an independent woman! Kate's about as needy and helpless as they come!

Resilience? She depends on retweeting platitudes when faced with adversity, or she just pretends that it didn't happen. Sticking your head in the sand is never going to get her out of tough situations.

This sheeple is a BM. Baby Milo...grooming herself to take over in the event that Milo finds herself confined without tweeting capabilities.

hmmm. Suspiciously nice. Too nice for Kate. Funny how every time she has guests her decorating skills improve. Notice the wording too..."Fall is here! And I'm all decorated! The kids get so excited when my decorations change! They always notice and ohh&ahh!"

She didn't say "I decorated" because if she had she'd have broadcasted it loud and clear.

It's a way to get her (meaning Kate's ) version of things out to the Twitter nutcases since MIlo's always available and is known to be Kate's one true fan. I had some hope for Deanna originally - she's brighter than most of the sheeple, but clearly in the throws of Kate-love, and she's such a huge enabler. Not to mention on Kate's payroll. Eventually, she'll be pushed aside like all the others.

Also, this allegiance she's formed with Kate isn't doing her any good in her business. She'll deny it and say she has plenty of work, but she's being laughed at behind the scenes.

Just Kate? J/K.

I think it's funny that Milo tweeted that the non-fans stayed awake worrying about the napkin. She really is delusional. I seriously doubt that ANY of the non-fans tossed and turned all night because they couldn't figure out the name on the napkin.

Milo worries when she doesn't know who was there for dinner, or if Kate is neglecting her grow-a-boyfriend, and keeps tweeting Kate relentlessly until she has an answer, but non-fans aren't flocking to their doctors for prescriptions of Lunesta because Kate's napkin is keeping them awake.

silimom said...

Just logged on. Who, according to Deanna, has a food allergy? And why would you mark it "JK" or "KK"? Unless those were initials for "Jodi Kreider" or "Kevin Kreider" or "Kenton Kreider"?

All I can say is that Deanna must have an awful lot of time on her hands to be taking on the role of Kate's Twitter moderator. Too bad Kate can't fight her own battles. Since obviously someone is reading here, I have some advice:

If Kate feels bullied, if she feels she is being unfairly treated, why doesn't she take a page from her own playbook and Leann Rimes and sue this site and it's Administrator for libel? Why not sue the Twitter "bullies" for libel?

Oh wait...she already tried threatening to sue the Admin. Hmmm...that didn't work too well.

Oh, and she did ask Twitter to "take care of" the people who were posting nasty comments about her and Twitter didn't do anything about. Hmmm....that didn't work out so well either.

Oh wait, oh wait, oh wait!!! I've got it! Why don't you just advise your friend Kate to take her Twitter private? Then, only the people she likes and who like her would have access to her pics and tweets. That would be a very mature, proactive approach to dealing with the constant bullying she alleges she suffers from. Unless, of course, your true purpose is to show what a put upon martyr you are and try to play on people's sympathies. Or you are a masochist. Or you're too lazy. Or you enjoy being able to snark back at your detractors.

Look, I have no problem if Kate or any other "celebrity" wants to have a public twitter account. But to sit there and constantly whine that people are making nasty comments about you or your tweets is just asinine. Take some personal responsibility, use the privacy settings in the account management menu and take your Twitter private. If you want a public account, simply make a public account where you don't respond to anyone. Let them know if they want to talk to you, to tweet a request to join your private account. If you let them in and then they trash you, block them from your Twitter.

I mean, come on, Deanna. Are you saying you and/or Kate are too ignorant to be able to learn how to do that?

Believe me, I would LOVE it if she took her Twitter private. I would love to be able to come here and not see the Twitter feeds or comments about what she's posted online.

The fact that Kate won't do this tells me that she wants attention. She wants the "haters" to talk about her because it's what keeps her relevant in the media. Let's face it. If it weren't for her 'haters' and Robert Hoffman running to Radar/Star/National Enquirer each week, Kate would fade away into obscurity. She'd return to being one the mediocre plebeians she loathes and fears so much.

So Deanna, talk to Kate and advise your friend that going private is the best solution. And then listen to her excuses and decide for yourself "what is she getting out of keeping her Twitter public?" and whether it's worth your time to continually defend her.

silimom said...

And before anyone says anything, Yes, I know Leann Rimes is suing her "non fan/bully" for illegally recording a phone conversation, not libel. Because that's all she could sue them for.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Sillimom that was a fantastic post and explanation for exactly why this is NOT bullying and if Kate thinks it is, the simple solution is to go away.

A few people often moan and groan we don't pick on Jon. However, Jon hasn't said a peep in ages and ages. It would be hypocritical of us to demand that Kate go quiet if she wants to be left alone, but to not honor the same when Jon goes quiet. If people make it clear they want things to be quiet and to be left alone, then people will respect it. Most people anyway.

Dragging in late to the conversation, but I did want to comment about Veteran's Day, and if it is a school holiday or not.

Veteran's Day is a most emotional day for me. I read the link to A Marine's Journey Home through tears threatening to become sobs. I don't think I could possibly cope with watching Taking Chance.

I'm reminded of the Veteran's Day when the school called, asking me if I knew my children were not in school that day. I was astonished at the question, and said that of course they weren't in school, it was a holiday! I was even more astonished to be informed that it wasn't a school holiday in that school district!! I eventually had to go to the school and cause a big stink in order to have their absence an ''excused absence''.

I'm really interested about Robert's blog comments being deleted, yet the site is still up. I was happy to see that I'm not the only one that suspects (hopes?) that once again, Robert is 'teasing' KK. It would be beyond hysterical if he is allowing KK to believe that she has 'won', only to slap her upside the head with his re-released book!!

I almost forgot! I appreciate that ''Google Trends'' chart that plots google interest in KK. To me, it is clear that she stays on twitter, hoping to not drop back into the obscurity of 2005/2007!

Hi all. I'm late to the party, but I just wanted to respond to the post about teachers. Please keep in mind that this is not directed at anyone, just my opinion.

I have felt, from people I know, that many expect too much of the teachers. Yes, they are there to teach our children, but it is also important that the parents do their job as well. Unfortunately, I know too many people who never made the kids do their homework because they didn't want the hassle of having to watch them, help them, answer questions, etc. I'm sure this is not the majority of parents, but it does happen.

When my daughter was a senior in HS, we had issues with her. She was on the honor roll, and for her senior year, she chose all "gravy" classes because she only needed a few credits to graduate. Her classes were photography, child care, horticulture, school newspaper, etc. Nothing that would challenge her and I knew she would get bored (by the way, the school did not require parental permission for senior class schedules. She could choose what she wanted)>

Anyhow, she started cutting some classes because she felt they were boring and not necessary. We came down on her hard, told her this was her decision to take these classes, and at one point took her car (an old used one) away, and she had to go back to taking the bus. I kept in touch with her teachers by email and cell phone, and they let me know every time she missed a class or a homework assignment. She soon changed her ways.

A woman I worked with at the time was going through the same thing with her daughter, but our responses couldn't have been more different. When the school contacted her about her daughter missing school, my co-worker's response was that she drops her off at the door. Once she is in the school, it's their responsibility to make sure she gets to class. I told her that was incorrect because the school has a thousand students and they cannot personally walk each student to class. She said that they are supposed to provide an education and I said the school is reponsible for providing the responsibility for an education, but the kid has to want it and the parents need to help.

Another co-worker had issues with her daughter a few years before (she is now a high school drop out), and this co-worker also blamed the school and teachers because she said they only worry about the good students, and should be checking up more on those that are cutting class. I explained that they don't have the staff and they can't ignore 28 kids in the class there to learn and just focus on the one problem student.

Neither of these co-workers liked my responses, but it is what I truly believe. Parents MUST be involved, and kids held accountable. One of my daughter's teachers was not good and even I got into it with her. However, we were blessed because every other teacher, every year, was great.

I'm so sorry this post is so long. Delete if you must Admin.

Off Topic - Sockarooni Chicken recipe

A while back, there was a yummy sounding recipe for Sockarooni Chicken posted. Finally found Newman's Sockarooni Sauce but can't find the recipe. Anyone remember this or have the recipe? Gracias!!
_____________________________

Voila! Here you go. I don't know who submitted it though, I just saved it. LOL

Chicken/Sockaroonie/Paul Newman

Cut up two really large skinless, boneless chicken breasts, dump in jar of Paul Newman's Sockarooni sauce, plus half a jar of any kind spaghetti sauce with mushrooms, stir in some oregano and parsley flakes, a dash of Italian seasoning, pinch of paprika. Turn on high for about an hour or so, and then back to low until the chicken is done. Stir. If it's too thick, thin with rest of the generic spaghetti sauce, or add just a little bit of water. I usually let the whole thing simmer for about five hours or so. Serve with noodles or rice, green salad and garlic bread. Sorry I don't have the correct amounts. I've made it so often and I've never measured. If you're a mushroom fan, you can saute some mushrooms first and add them to the crockpot after you put in the Sockarooni.

No one was talking about blaming and/or insulting teachers until RL played strawman and turned it around against teachers (defensive much?????????) & also no one was talking about parents being involved or not involved either. It sure took a weird turn when RL made it about insulting teachers.

If you were Kate, wouldn't you be embarrassed if someone like Milo tweeted non-stop sickening praises to you all day, every day? Or do you think that Kate really eats up the attention? I can't imagine that she's not just a little bit annoyed with all of the groveling and brown nosing that Milo does. I mean, doesn't even a narcissist get fed up at some point?

I don't like when teachers belyache about bad parents just because a parent has a different idea than them. Thanks for the background info, Dwindle. I didn't know everything that had happened today because I still haven't read all of the posts. Either way, I stand by my earlier post.

OT Alert about new recipe. Yesterday, I saw a Rachel Ray show and she made a squash, sweet potato, and carrot soup. It sounded so good so I made it yesterday as a started for dinner because I might make it for Thanksgiving. Oh my gosh, this soup was so good! And as Rachel said, figure friendly because it is a like a thick cream soup, but there is no cream in it.

Now the hubs is not a soup lover, but he ate his whole bowl. I insist he always give me an honest opinion about new recipes and he did. He didn't care for it and that didn't surprise me. Although I cut Rachel's recipe in half, I still had a lot left so I called the friends I take lunch with and said I would be bringing this soup to have with our sandwiches.

I shared the soup with 4 other people and they loved it. They had second helpings and asked for the recipe. Then a another co-worker sitting at the table behind us came up to me after lunch and said she heard the comments and she would like the recipe, too.

If anyone is interested in this recipe, let me know and I'll post it. I told my daughter I'm going to make it as our starter for TG. She said okay, but she says okay to anything as long as I'm doing the cooking. Lol!

ReaderLady - As a parent and former teacher I agree with completely and speaking for myself I was not insulted in the least.. Education is a two way street and requires involvement, communication and committment from the student, the family and the school.

Around Town - I have several children in special Ed so believe me I understand that school systems are not perfect. There are good teacher and administrators and poor ones. There are many times I have felt frustrated. But, as I tell my kids, we can't always control our feelings but we can control what we choose to do about how we feel. My choice has always been to remain calm, to focus on what I observe are my children's needs and to advocate politely but firmly for those needs to be met. That involves compromise on both sides but I can see the results and my children have reaped the rewards. I also do my part to be involved, both on PTA and in the Special Ed community. The relationships I have made have contributed to our IEP meetings being successful because we see each other as a team, not as opponents.

Having been a teacher, I have a unique perspective, perhaps. I am not perfect and I certainly do not expect that of my children's teachers or administrators. I do hold them to the same standard I hold myself and my kids - to treat everyone with courtesy, kindness, patience and understanding.

Dwindle, we always do appetizers. As for breakfast, my daughter takes care of that on her end because the hubs and I are driving there. We leave around 5:00 TG morning (I usually make a small breakfast casserole the night before so we can just pop in the microwave before we hit the road).

When we get to our daughter's, usually around 11:00, I open up the cooler and have the appetizers all ready to put out. My SIL's family usually arrives around noon and we basically have an appetizer lunch. By the way, my daughter makes some appetizers, too, but not too many. She knows I love to cook so I tell her what I'd like to do. She usually says go for it, mom.

I do appetizers at every holiday because we get together early and that way people have something to eat and it's like a buffet lunch.

Tweetle, here is the recipe that with the amounts I used for 2 of us.

Heat up some extra virgin olive oil and a couple pats of margarine or butter. Sautee 1 chopped onion and 1 diced garlic clove. Then add 1 teaspoon of each: ground coriander, ground cumin, paprika. Half teaspoon of ground ginger and ground nutmeg and a pinch of cinnamon (Rachel grated fresh ginger and nutmeg, but I didn't have it). Then add a teaspoon of honey. I used one medium squash (butternut, but she used a different kind and said any squash can be used), 2 medium sweet potatoes, 3 carrots, and 1 apple (any kind, I used gala), all peeled and chopped. Add them to the pot with the onions, garlic, and seasonings. Add in some salt and pepper, then about 2-3 cups chicken stock. Cook partially covered for about 45 minutes.

This is where the recipe differed from hers. She cooked it for 30 minutes because she used an immersion blender to cream it. I don't have an immersion blender and like my soups chunky, so I cooked it for 45 minutes and then used a potato masher. I could have used my hand held mixer, but didn't want to. Also, to the onions and seasonings, Rachel added chipoltle in adobo puree and hot sauce. We don't like spicy foods like that so I didn't add it. Personal choice for you.

When ready to serve, add the juice of half an orange and cook for a few more minutes. Rachel sauteed chopped chorizo to top the soup with. I sauteed chopped canadian bacon and topped the soup with that. It was very good.

When I was putting away the leftovers, I still had more sauteed canadian bacon so I just put it in the bowl with the soup. Everyone who tried it loved it.

Butterfly -- Then you'd go nuts where I grew up. I grew up in a town on the Ohio River, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains (but they're called "The Little Smokeys" because they often have a haze hanging over them). In the fall, the hills are ablaze with color -- golds and red and bronze and orange, with patches of green from the evergreen trees. The sky is bright blue, with a few puffy white clouds. If you take a boat ride down the river it is glorious! I live in the flatlands now and I miss the hills, but never so much as in fall, when the leaves turn.

NJGal -- Some of the stores here have had their Christmas stuff out since Labor Day. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around, I'm thoroughly sick of it, and I HATE feeling that way about Christmas. I love Christmas, but this drives me crazy!

As Charlie Brown said, Christmas has been commercialized, but now the stores are starting it so early it's ridiculous. What happened to the holiday in between Halloween and Christmas to give thanks for the blessings we have?

I love the old traditional Christmas carols, too, but I allow for some of the newer songs -- "Do You Hear What I Hear", "The Little Drummer Boy" and the like. My favorite is "The Messiah", though. Singing it is a real workout, but it's so uplifting and if you have a good choir, the sound is glorious.

The Mummers! I remember the Ferko String Band coming to our town every summer for a concert and we'd all bring colorful umbrellas with us so that we could join in the Mummer strut at the ens when they played When The Saints Go Marching In. I haven't thought of that for a good 20 years or so. Thanks for the memory I'm going to share it with my brothers and sisters!

Thanksgiving is always the kick off for the Christmas season for me. I love watching the parade on T-day and we usually start putting up our trees on Black Friday. I also play every holiday movie--got a nice collection going.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

OOOO, I need new ones! What do you have? Please list, double spaced, in aphabetical order with stars hightlighting the ones you like best. You have 11 minutes to complete this task.

Ok Ok just kidding! MY TRADITION is to watch the original Miracle of 34th street on Thanksgiving night, it was always on TV when I was a kid when I slept over at Gma's that night. Then on the Sunday we put up the tree WE have to have on National Lampoons Christmas Vacation because of Chevy Chase putting up the lights hits hilariously close to home. Then on Christmas Eve I insist we watch The Crossing with Jeff Daniels. The rest are hit and miss.

But if I dont have turkey leftovers in front of the TV watching the BandW original Miracle on 34th Street on Thxgvng night, there is one sad Dwindle for days and days.

Speaking of fall leaves, on year we took an October driving trip. Drove from Ohio to Charlottesville VA, spent 3 days there and at Monticells, drove Skyline Drive, spent 5 days in a cabin in the Great Smokey Mountains outside of Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and OberGatlinburg, then drove on to Nashville for another 5 days.

I loved Charlottesville so much!

The kids and I used to laugh till we peed, all at HoneyBunny's expense of couse. So much of that movie is dear HB at the holidays, especially the darned lights, the holiday bonus that never comes, WANTING to take a chain saw to the tree! But now we are empty nesters and we both want that movie on as we decorate the tree. The VHS is wearing out, I really should burn a copy onto DVD soon...

I will bore you with more on that AFTER the season properly starts.

LoveMyGrandsons said...

I personally don't believe Mady said those things. I think it is just more of Kate's BS publicizing to all what a great mother she is and how all of her kids just love to be near her, to share her "light". As others have said, blech!!!!

The change of seasons, especially into fall, is what I miss about living in No. CA and the midwest. Our leaves around San Diego turn but don't get the brilliant colors that come with the low temps. Eleven years ago we went back to OH to bring my younger daughter "home." She decided that on that "oh, whatever" handflap day of 9/11 that she was ready to come home. We parked the RV in a park with few guests so leaves were ripe for picking up. I filled 2 one-gallon bags with leaves and brought them home. I bring them out every Thanksgiving.

Thank you and God Bless our Veterans and God watch over those currently serving, especially to those here with family members on acive duty and to Butterfly, too.

Deanna said the parchment paper initials was for allergies. So to me it sounds like a catering company made the food. Regular cooks don't have that kind of parchment paper indicating different allergies in their homes. Busted!

I'm not an expert on the workings of Twitter, but isn't TL "timeline?" I looked on Tweet Tunnel, and Kate has tweeted Milo many, many times in the past three months. What am I missing here?

Allergies? Oh, OK. So don't serve this poisson en papillotte with Jelly, Ice cream or

What I thought about the dinner picture was:

The way the JIK "monogram" was folded over so perfectly leads me to believe it was front and center for a reason. We were supposed to see it.

Those placemats are very, very "everyday" for a fancy schmancy meal. Why not use just the tablecloth when there are only adults there?

In order for that white reflection to be the chef, she would have had to be literally hovering over the plate. Otherwise, her reflection would not have hit at that angle on that particular plate.

Now, don't get me wrong: I don't know what this all means. And I'm obviously not citing their conversation word-for-word. But someone who knows how to use Twitter Tunnel (?) can probably track down their back-and-forth. It might not be possible to translate the conversation in any meaningful way, seeing as how their relationship dynamic is so...uhhh, UNUSUAL.

Well well said...

Well, well, well look at that! Kate said she loves the dogs. Kate said please and thank you. When she wasn't being filmed or anything. Just a candid moment in her life and I think it says a lot for Kate. She is obviously polite to others, even those who were doing a service for her and she loved the dogs.

Thanks, Improbable. I checked on Tweet Tunnel, and if that's a timeline, there are numerous tweets from Kate to Milo in the past three months, which is why I don't understand why someone tweeted that tonight is the first time Kate tweeted her since August.

I don't think that is a J and K. I think it is a diagram showing Kate how to open the paper containing the fish. The curved parts facing opposite directions represent the two sides of the paper and the two straight lines are the seams or folds of the paper. This is how Kate knows to pull the paper apart to get to the contents. See she's not used to packaged food that don't contain the words "Open Here" so her personal chef has to draw a diagram for her to follow. Mystery solved.

Oh, and if you read here Kate, sorry to tell you that your few Texas fans on Twitter are wrong. We don't want you here in Texas. Everyone I know either doesn't know who you are, confuses you with Octomom or if they do know who you are they don't like you at all.

Or maybe that's one of the "other" Milos who is respectful. You just never know who is going to show up.

It says a lot about Kate that she said "thank you" to the hired help via email while giving them orders? Um, please and thank you are about as basic as you can get. She doesn't deserve a medal for doing what everyone else does normally. That's like saying an adult deserves a sticker and maybe even a little trophy for rolling out of bed and brushing their teeth every morning. That's what you're SUPPOSED to do.
