The Farmer's Wife: A rare case of when not paying a family for their work is a good thing

This week: Part Two

Realitytvkids.com will be organizing an official summer "book club" screening of The Farmer's Wife. Watch Part 2 the week of August 12, and Part 3 (link to come) the week of August 19 and discuss it as you go with all the interesting folks here. If you missed Part 1 it can be found here .

Juanita faithfully cleaned houses to make ends meet during filming.
The public was outraged when TLC disclosed in 2010 that the first time they ever set up a trust fund for a portion of the Gosselin children's earnings wasn't until November 2009, some four years after they first put the children on T.V. in May 2006. Up until then, the children had never been directly paid (Jon and Kate however have always been paid.)

Many advocacy groups for entertainers believe that reality stars, adults and children alike, should be treated as SAG members and paid fairly for their work (SAG regulations require that actors make a minimum of $4,800 per week). However some reality show productions do not pay, often because they cannot afford to.

Such was the case for filmmaker David Sutherland, the creator of The Farmer's Wife. His tight budget simply didn't allow him to give the Buschkoetters any payment for their three years of work. He even dipped into his retirement savings to fund the $1.3 million project. (Many donations from around the country however came in once the show aired.)

The result was a virtually untouched, brutally honest story of one family's struggle to make ends meet and save a marriage. The filmmaking was so intimate, the crew even once followed Juanita to a meeting with a particularly stubborn creditor as she negotiated their debt with him, successfully.

There were no "make-over" episodes or luxurious trips or other nonsense. Instead we watched a family fall down, hard, then pick themselves up, brush themselves off and figure out a way to make it on their own. If Sutherland had paid the family, it certainly would have helped them put food on the table. But would the story be as "pure"? Would we still be talking about this film fifteen years later? Probably not.

"It's tough watching it," Juanita was once quoted, "Only because it's really what life was like the last three years, really real."

Indeed, the "realest reality show" ever was not Jon and Kate. It was The Farmer's Wife.

Anger Issues, thank you. I know you understand the medication making you sleepy.

I haven't read Kate's CC blog and I won't waste my time to do so. It sounds like nothing new that we didn't already know, and just her bragging about the gadgets that they have. She really is pathetic.

However, to return to one of my usual themes about Kate reading here. We all made comments about her being able to take the kids to the beach, and now, magically, she can afford it and does it! Read here much, Kate?

There's no busy footprints in or around the blue tent. There is by the lawn chair. Maybe they're just testing the waters. I have no idea where they threw down their beach stuff and I sure as hell don't need to know. I'm just glad the kids got some privacy except for their idiot mother's twitterpics and this one by the gal on facebook.

I've tried the glycine for the past 4 nights and so far I am very happy. I sleep better and I wake up refreshed and I feel good throughout the day. It's great. I didn't get the powder - I got 1000 mg capsules - so I take 3 at night right when I go to bed. Then I read for 1/2 hour to an hour, then sleep. I still wake up in the middle of the night, but it's not as jarring and I don't stay awake as long. So far I can get up pretty easily too - and I've even made it into work early!

Does it not make you want to laugh at Kate. For a person who claims to be so organized, she sure has a lot of paperwork. An organized person never talks of paperwork, neither does a person who does everything online(paying bills). Drama Queen Kate!

LoveMyGrandsons said...

I made one of the Pioneer Woman's recipes that was on her show a couple weeks ago, chicken spaghetti. Oh my gosh, was that delicious!! As usual, I made too much (my hubby always teases me that I make enough in case a tour bus breaks down in front of our house!).

Anyhow, my hubby is okay with pasta dishes, but he doesn't love them, where as I do. I took the leftovers to work and treated my friends for lunch and they loved it! I gave them all the recipe at their request.

She has a lot of good recipes and they are things that I never would have thought of. If you like spaghetti and chicken, get this recipe from her website; you'll love it!

@Kateplusmy8 Bob & Beth also paid for Gosselin8 1st year in private school

When did Kate stop talking to Beth? 2008? The six Gosselins started Junior Kindergarten in September of 2009. I highly doubt that Beth and
Bob shelled out for the Gosselin8's first year in private school if she wasn't even talking to them at that time. It's never been confirmed that Beth and Bob paid for any of the kids' tuition. 199

IMO, Beth and Bob were genuine friends and whatever they may have financed was out of friendship. To my mind, this is different and
separate from fleecing unsuspecting strangers.
Whatever became of Beth and Bob is their business and none of ours.

They went and have stayed private.

Over in Kate's County, if you read the comments folks were upset with Jon because they had that right. They knew him. These weren't strangers snarking about a reality tv show couple, and they didn't get personal until Jon himself showed up and tried to tell them the facts reported in the news story were not the facts. In the very same way Kate has tried to retract every interview she has given because she can't control the spin. So Jon may have friends today, as I am sure he does, but this gives us opportunity to see who he is, without filters and without friends covering up for him.

The only issue for me is that Jon doesn't act like that anymore. He is far from perfect, but he has far more introspection than the other parent.

Kate acts exactly the same as she acted six years ago. Jon does not. I'd hate to be judged constantly for something I said six years ago. Few people are the same people they were six years ago, especially when you are young.

I disagree with your comment, mama mia. What you saw was a glimpse at Jon THEN, not now. Jon has publicly apologized for the decisions he made then. Unlike Kate, Jon has matured, accepted the responsibility for his previous actions and made sure that his children were no longer exploited by their mother. He is liked by the people who know him. Many people have said that Jon is likable, including people that post on this blog. I trust those on this blog who speak highly of Jon.

Oddly enough I have heard more from insiders about Jon than about Kate. Maybe because Kate isolates herself so much while Jon has a wider circle of friends and family.

I have never heard a bad thing about Jon. People always say he's nice, respectful, puts his kids first, is a good dad. No one says he's PERFECT, but they say he's generally a good guy. There are no dirty secrets insiders tell about him like they do Kate.

One of the comments there:

"Didn't Kate have a TV in the toddlers bedroom so they could watch during their insanely long naptime?"

Also, didn't they show on one episode of J&K+8, how the kids loved to watch themselves on TV? Kate's tweeted many times about watching old episodes, the Roma Downey videos, and movies.

Don't tell me those kids only watch DVD's or play electronic games when they're travelling.

Kate's new paperwork should be a chart on what she has said in the past, so she can refer to it before she opens her mouth to spew another lie.

Jilly, when did Jon date a whore? I thought he dated a nanny, a schoolteacher and a doctor's daughter. He's had two serious relationships in two years. I'll never understand why this gets him labeled unstable etc. If that's the case I guess I'm a floozie since I once had a whopping two serious relationships in two years and in between dated a handful before finding anything serious. Dating is how you find the serious relationships, I thought. The second of those two stuck for good. I fail to see how Jon is doing anything different than any other person I've ever known who has dated, either with kids or without, divorced or not.

As far as the other woman having kids, the children need a stepmother who is good with kids. I'm told they like his girlfriend, and liked Ellen too. We have photos and video proving how well they got along with Ellen. It seems to me it would be imperative, especially with eight kids, to be certain the woman you are with is good with children. Kate wants to date too the only difference is Jon has actually found a date. I think each of them should date if they want to. IF the don't want to, fine, too.

By the way I recently played the piano for a beautiful wedding, her first marriage, his second. He has three teenager kids. They did this absolutely tear-jerking ceremony in the wedding where each of the boys poured a vile of sand into a pretty vase and then their dad and new stepmom poured some sand in. Symbolic of the five of them becoming one. It was such a sweet gesture, even the middle boy was getting choked up. Many people are able to find good second marriages and it's not necessarily bad for your kids.

Well, she does firmly believe in using HER imagination, doesn't she. She imagines all these great things that are in store for her.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Kate is a twit, also, for someone who firmly believes TV shouldn't babysit the kids she sure tweets a lot about TV. She watches the shows that go two hours too more than one day a week.

At one point I believe she said she was watching American Idol, The Voice, Dancing With the Stars, Dexter....what am I missing? That alone is quite a few hours a week. Not to mention all the movie nights which seem to happen at least twice a week. Plus all the episodes of their show she claims they watch all the time.

Watch TV, be a couch potato, I don't freaking care. But to pretend you don't park you and your family in front of the TV all the time is ludicrous, her own tweets suggest otherwise.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Oh also wasn't their an episode where the kids were watching cartoons on TV before breakfast? Heck that TV is on blaring away even before they've eaten their first meal of the day.

I can't stand her holier than thou parenting when we know she's full of it and have proof.

I don't care if you stick your kids in front of the TV, lots of parents end up doing this. Okay so it's kind of pathetic if all you have to do is write a crappy blog post or two twice a week as your JOB, but TV watching is not the worst thing you can do as a parent. But the condescending "using the TV to babysit your kids" and pretending she would never dream of doing such a thing? And Kate doesn't want HER parenting judged? That sounds like a pretty darn judgmental statement right there. And hypocritical too. We know she does the same thing. She's tweeted as such. That's what's so crazy about this. She says all this crap that she does and normally no one would think anything of it, but because of the show, twitter and her own big fat mouth, we know so much about how she REALLY lives, we therefore know most of the utopia of how she wants us to THINK she lives is utter crap. Does she think we didn't pay attention? I have a photographic memory, I remember crap like what TV shows she says she watches. This memory of mine comes in handy for things like fights (I never said that...YES YOU DID I REMEMBER) and for when Kate lies.

Even when she claims the kids are shrieking with joy over various crap, we know the kids are just sort of generally normal and calm as they've gotten older. And no more particularly attached to their siblings than anyone else.

I remember so vividly in third grade, we got our class assignments the last day of the school year. And as we walked out of class for lunch or something I saw my best friend in her class across the hall and we both shouted Mrs. Berger!!! It was the best moment ever, we were thrilled. I paid little attention to siblings at that age, although I suppose it's different with multiples. Not that much though.

Personality wise, I agree. Jon's a very pleasant person or at least he comes off like that. Always has. Having read Al Walentis' book and looking forward to Robert Hoffmans corroboration, I think everyone will be surprised.

Compared to what we've seen on TV, interviews, magazine articles, newspaper reports, DWTS insiders speaking and Kate's illustrious twitter campaign, anyone would be seen as a nice person next to Kate.

We all came here and all the other past Gosselin blogs to speak out against the parents, reach out to those who agreed the kids needed protection and neither Jon nor Kate did anything to stop it or protect them.

Kate is still on turbo mode yet Jon went away quietly only to surface on Tabloid TV with yet again another girlfriend, someone he professed his undying attention for and his pre tween daughters had to see that like the rest of us did.

IMO, Jon and Kate are still trying to ply their brand, I.E. good cop, bad cop. Jon's still playing the media when it suits him, Kate's been playing it the entire time. If you read the Wanentis book, you'll see the pattern and nothing has changed other than the year, the time line and the birthdays.

I trust neither Jon nor Kate. Jons the affable dunce and Kate's the driving force behind the brand they created, want to keep active and neither one will let it go, Kids be damned.

My kids always got their class assignments at Back To School night along with all their friends. One of my daughters had quintuplets in her class; none of them were really all that interested in which sibling was in their room but they sure wanted to find out which of their friends were. Maybe if they were home when then got the news it would have been different, but I don't see it. They obviously cared for their siblings but they were always encouraged in their own individual talents and interests and each of them had a nice circle of their own friends.

SeeSaw, oh my gosh, you brought back memories that I had long forgotten. Yes, riding our bikes to the school to see what class we were in and if our friends were in the same class.

*************

I grew up in a very small town, so there were no class lists. There was one class for each grade. If you were going into third grade, you went to the third grade classroom. All of your friends from previous years were in your class. When you got to junior high school (7th grade) the only thing you knew about ahead of time was the homeroom assignment. This was published in the local newspaper...those with last names beginning with the letters from A to N, Mr. Harper's homeroom; those with last names from O to Z, Mrs. Harper's homeroom. Simple times.

Kate makes me sick the way she so blatantly excepts gifts from strangers especially teenagers. She really has no shame at all

Anonymous said...

If nobody minds me giving an observation. I couldn't help but notice.

Kate, or as you claim you don't think it's good to let kids be babysat by a television set which I suppose is true to a point these days.

I have to ask though, while you (even with evidence to the contrary) your kids don't watch much television...but you spent pretty much or most of your day with your face glued to your phone...on Twitter from the time you get up to the time you go to sleep.

And, with no experience of having been a parent yet, I do happen to have experience of, if you as a parent tell your kid, "I don't want you watching television all day," exactly how are you going to defend yourself when your kids should ask you, "Why can't we watch television? You spend all day with your phone."

Kids learn I think mostly through observing you as a parent, what you do they pick up on it. Her kids are going to pick up on the concept, "Okay, so she says not to do X, but there she is doing Y...so there for X must be okay for us to do if she's able to do Y." Or something similar to that concept.

If she says she lives by example for her kids...than what the heck is she doing by being on Twitter all day? Neither one is healthy but, what the heck, go figure.

Now I also know that some parents work from home, but unlike her, with her simple blog post for once or twice a week (and her "alleged" paperwork) most parents devote a given set of hours to their online business, working-in-office from home, skype, email or whatever say a regular hour when the kids are at school or a weekend hour of maybe 9-1pm or something. The point is they aren't zoned out all day with working and staring at a screen.

My final observation...Kate, if you're so busy, being a single mom, working from home, doing your laundry room, cooking...answer the question of how you still manage to have time to spend it glued to your electronic device? But you say it's wrong to let your kids zone out all day? What's the difference? I mean it's not exactly like you're all that important. You aren't running a company or anything.

For someone who leads by example you sure do a poor job of it.

And, if your kids are always this gleeful, always this excited about whatever my suggestion is: you might want to cut back on the sugar you give your kids. You know your ALL-organic Juicy-Juicy and all the energy bars you share with your kids? Your kids shouldn't need or be eating energy bars at their at their age. You know, your fruit snacks and all that junk? Yeah, that too might help.

Best of all for your kids if you allowed them separate interests maybe people wouldn't think them weird for being excited to see which sibling is in which class over individual friends.

Just a few thoughts though, Kate. But you, the all-time mother of mother's who wants to compete in the Mommy Olympics should, I assume, already know this, as you know compared to myself who has no kids.

Bullshit. She stood there and DEMANDED one. TLC obliged the witch. There was money to made with Jon and Kate back then and they were going to stand on their heads and rub her belly to keep her happy.

Why she'd deny having breast implants when it's plain as day she has them is beyond me. It's not like it's an unheard of procedure.

I doubt that the good Lord could have transformed water into wine and pulled off the great wedding at Cana in such an expedient manner. New hair, new boobs, new teeth, new body, new lifestyle and yet she tweets squeeks of joy from her kids every single day.

I suspect Kate's going to take a new tact since it's been days away from a year that she's been cancelled.

When Kate can part the Susquehanna River, walk on top of it and tweet, "Set My Sheeple Free" I'll suspect she is the second coming. I think the problem Kate is running into is she is running out of blog fodder. She doesn't spend enough time with the children for blog fodder opportunities to happen. You can tell the big mommy bloggers who truly spend a lot of time with their kids because they always are full of funny stories about various things. Kate really doesn't have many of those types of things. She isn't amassing much blog fodder because she's too busy twittering or doing whatever and leaving them with nannies, or they are with Jon or in school so much. I predict her blogs will get less and less meaty as the idea well runs dry.

AuntieAnn said...

Yes, you're right Admin. Any money she has spent for all the enhancements, trips, clothes, etc was only because she pimped her kids. Otherwise she'd still be a mediocre mom working her shifts at the clinic or hospital, which is the way it should have been in the first place...but it wasn't the plan she had in mind. Kelly aka Underwalt said...

ADMIN, You hit the nail on the head. There's nothing exciting about a day to day tweet, blog or update on the day to day life of a parent. It's actually boring. It's what parents do. Kids are kids and although they excite parents with achievements, all parents experience them. It's called parenting.

Kate's shrieks of joy with kids getting classroom assignments, freebies in the mail, pics of kids sitting in a straight line on the floor, 2 feet from a CRT watching yet another Gosselin Family Feature while posed with a death grip on an ice cream cone isn't normal.

Kids are like pack animals. They cuddle, they huddle and they want to be comfortable no matter what the situation. Kate tweets pics of kids sitting in line like Roll Call at boot camp, smiling, holding proof of treats and not allowed to be comfotable no matter what the Gosselin Movie Night played.

Kate's tweets and pics are so out to lunch it proves she reads the blogs and tweets and goes out of her way to deflect all comments.

Yes, good blogs just sound like they flow with
stories to tell and lead us toward some reflection. They are easy to read and you kind of get pulled into this person's thoughts for a moment. They have a point. A point that often leads to discussion.

Kate's blog pieces read like a desperate how-to book. No prep, no thought, just slap words on a page. Doesn't have to say much, just get it done. Who cares? It's done.

They are as contrived and juvenile as a 1st grader's attempts at rhyming poetry, IMO.

I know folks will say she has nannies and whatnot, whatever, she still spends time with her kids enough to get some good stories out of it.

Here's HER post about running. It's real. It's about how her husband has to be the drill sergeant and get her out there. She talks about certain parts jiggling lol. It's not some romantic ridiculous post about how practically perfect her exercise routine is. She is a real woman, a writer, relatable, and could blog circles around Kate.

Ha, yes, exactly!

The only reason they went there was because she didn't HAVE to budget.

She never would have gone there otherwise. And she just said THE BEACH because she was embarrassed that it was Alabama and not, you know, Kiawah or BHI or the Hamptons. If it was one of those types of places she would have set up a giant blinking road sign with an arrow pointing to her spot on the sand. (Clearly, the people in the area couldn't have cared less that she was there, which she probably didn't expect).

Alabama beaches are awesome and just as wonderful. Hmmm, maybe we should ask HER "lesson learned?", lol

Jillybean, I agree with you about Jon.

He has 8 kids who desperately need his attention but he can't be alone for 5 minutes. The kids don't need a stepmom. They need THEIR FATHER.

Jon *had an affair* with the schoolteacher, because he was still married when he "dated" her. He then dated Hailey Glassman. Then there was some rich girl. And Kate Major. And Ellen. And the newest one, Liz I think? That's 6 off the top of my head. In three years.

I've been single 8 years and haven't had even one boyfriend. Why? Because I have 4 children to raise! I don't need to divide my time up even further by adding another man and possibly more children to my life. My kids come first.

Someone pointed out how much the Gosselin kids liked Ellen...well, she was just one more person brought into and kicked out of their lives. There are very few people who are consistently part of these kids' lives and it's irresponsible of Jon to drag more people in and out. (I also think it's irresponsible of Kate to do it, too, with all of her BFFs of the month.)

&&&

I pointed that out. How do we know Jon and Ellen didn't remain friends and she still sees the kids? We don't.

I also think it's overstated that it's hard to have people in and out of your life for kids. Heck kids get attached to all kinds of people and then they are gone. A teacher takes a job in a different district, a pastor moves to another church, a favorite aunt moves across town, a best friend moves to the next state. This is a part of life. Ideally it would be nice to keep the same exact people around your kids all the time for 18 years, but that's not the reality for anyone. Perhaps it's not the worst thing in the world for children to understand that such things are a part of life. Because if they don't learn it now they will have to eventually.

Break ups happen when you are dating. The other alternative is to exclude the children from your relationships, which can be even worse on them psychologically.

I think not dating anyone is the right choice for some single parents and I think dating is the right choice for other parents. I think both have their benefits and drawbacks.

Jon seems to be the type that just isn't as happy unless he is in a relationship. This is very normal for some people, not normal for others. I'm more of a person who is just as happy single as in a relationship, so it's hard for me to understand personally, but I know many people who can't function single. It is their reality. I don't think it serves the best interest of children if you're miserable. I also think he should get a chance at a REAL relationship and that the kids would do well to be part of a two parent family again. These children are incredibly young, and relatively speaking so is Jon. We're talking about a LONG time to ask a man to not be happy under the, in my opinion, mistaken belief that that's what the books say is best for kids.

....In this case I actually think the kids DO need a stepmom. Or maybe need isn't the right word, but I think it COULD be a very good thing for them. Kate's cut of a lot of the female influences from their lives--Aunt Jodi, Beth. They have some media whore makeup artist and some other enabling BFF who doesn't even have custody of her own kids, and a few 20-something nannies. Not exactly ideal.

A close friend of mine is a child of divorce and her father isn't the worst but has a lot of issues, including addiction, and she once walked in on him having an affair. In her case, her stepfather coming into her life some two years later was the best thing that could happen to her. I've known her since she was a teen and I saw firsthand how much her stepdad cared about her. Her mother worked a lot and it got to the point where she and her brother would turn to HIM when they needed something, not even their own mom. I so remember when her little brother got into a car accident calling him first thing. He just knew he could count on him and he would know what to do.

She's a well adjusted young woman now happily newly married. Her father walked her down the aisle. And so did her stepdad, on the other side. I know the cliche is oh the stepmom or stepdad how sad.....but for some kids it's a great thing for them.

BitterAnnK said...

Then I'd have to reveal MY source.
Anybody who "knew" them was aware of all this. Common knowledge for the locals. Only the tabloids and 'blogs' went crazy over her. Not even Kate seemed to care.

As far as Jon's other GF's being "whores" -- I find that very offensive. Only one has been seen scantily clad on men's magazines. That doesn't make them ALL whores, Just Hailey.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

BitterAnn understood. That is EXACTLY what has been explained to me regarding her. It's nice to have it corroborated is all.

What else can you corroborate? :)

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Hailey wasn't a real relationship. It was a rebound. The two real relationships Jon has had seem pretty positive to me. If anything Jon was really on his best behavior when he was Ellen, that can't be a coincidence. For as young as she was she really seemed to have good guidance for him. And I've heard nice things about Liz.

Kate's a fame whore.

BitterAnnK said...

Deanna ... sorry. My sister's name is Dianna and she's been on my mind a lot lately.

I will say that Jon trusts too easily and has a problem seeing the "bad" in people. Whether that's a bad trait or not, I'm not sure. Trusting Lohan and Major was a BIG mistake. I believe had ANYTHING physical happened between Jon and Kate 2.0, Blowhan would have been selling the video. This is just my opinion.

Fans can't forget a few months of bad behavior but they are blind to all of Kate's years and years of bad behavior. Jon dates and they are "whores" and he's a bad dad. kate wants to make out with strange men on TV (that's what dating shows are, sheeple, deal with it) and have her feet licked at bars and she's still their role-model of wonderful motherhood.

Kate couldn't grow a boyfriend with all the compost on all the Amish farms in Pennsylvania.

Could you IMAGINE if Jon had shown a "blow up girlfriend?" Yep, they'd crucify him on their dead blogs but when Kate does it it's so cute and clever.

Double standards are alive and well in sheepleville. Always has been.

++++++++++++++++++

That's true. No doubt about it. I'm with you, though, in that I don't know if it's a good thing or bad thing. His decisions have made him great tabloid fodder. Sheeple love to crucify him. He doesn't deserve it, especially from those who don't know him and have never seen him with his children. Jumping on the "slam Jon Bandwagon" seemed to be popular for awhile, and continues to be.

It's offensive to me as well to hear some call the women he dates "whores." But then again, I just consider the source.

There's sure alot of Jon defenders here.

And why? Because he apologized for his bad behaviour during his divorce? How about all the silly lies he tells like complaining he can't make decent & because he was a tv personality? Dude, that's all on you. You signed up for a reality show.

And how many times as he said he is going to give his final interview and yet continues to give more? That's a hypocrite in my eyes.

All the women he's been with? Dude, grow up you have a family to support. You're being pulled in 8 different directions already.

Stating Kate is a good mother? That defies any and all logic.

Coming out of nowhere to tell a tabloid magazine that he's afraid he's going to jail over failure of child support? Dude, shut it.

I've had enough of Jon. You may or may not agree.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Jillybean, pretty much agree, Jon has his faults. So do I. So does everyone. Shrug. I don't expect fathers, parents, or people to be perfect. Mediocre is good enough for me.

There's such a huge difference between just another flawed person, and a person given a thousand chances and still lives an entire life being mean, vile, hateful, narcissistic, greedy, nasty and so on. This is the difference between Jon and Kate. That is why we're hearing mostly talking about Kate, and not so much about Jon.

BitterAnnK said...

Jon is the lesser of two evils.

Some of the posters here know him personally. Do you?

Since when are tabloids FACTS? They can print whatever and put quotes around it. That doesn't mean Jon said it in public, it means they printed it. Big difference.

He has to defend himself because some people can't get over that he's moved on in relationships. YES, even I think he's a bit needy and it's sad that he seems to need a girlfriend but that's not necessarily a bad trait. The kids need to see daddy being treated like a man, not a servant.

Jon is far from perfect but they have 2 parents and their mother is completely incapable of meeting any of their emotional needs.

I don't know Jon or Kate. I watched them both
in action on their tv show. I have all the proof I need that Jon is an involved parent and Kate is not. I have seen Jon treat people well and Kate treat them horribly. I have seen Kate browbeat Jon and Jon still treat her well. They told us all this is their true selves on film, and I believe them.

I don't care about whether either one of them goes to a bar, dates someone or doesn't, or wears funny t-shirts. Those are not the things that make a good parent. Good parents spend time listening to their children, serve as role models, guide, comfort, nourish and shelter their children in a safe and loving environment.
They are raising children to be able to make it in the real world and not in some delusional bubble. I see Jon doing those things and that's good enough for me to call him a good dad and a good human being. Kate? She's got work to do.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Agreed, several people know him personally, have had opportunities to talk with him personally, email him, call him, observe him around town, and have formed their own judgments. Jon has been quietly reaching out for support from people around him far more than Kate ever has. It's partly why his reputation is so good for many despite the media campaign against him.

What we say about Jon doesn't come from thin air. If you've been here long enough you would know we're just not that kind of people. But that said, this place doesn't dictate how you should feel about anyone. Form your own opinion. I'm just letting you know where some of these things are coming from.

Jillybean said...

Jillybean, good question. Without Kate to compare it to what would we think of Jon? Well what's funny is I think we wouldn't think of Jon. He's too mediocre, too uninteresting, to warrant more than a blip on the radar. The draw of the show was Kate emasculating a nice guy. The draw of Jon today is his recovery from Kate. Kate's a little more interesting on her own than he is because of the depth of her mental illness being played out, but other than that, without each other...ehhh. Hate to say it but without Kate, Jon never would have been famous. He's just too normal and average. And that's a good thing.

They were both doing it. Why in the word did Jon recently do an interview with his new girlfriend if he was so "done" with reality TV and the media? I don't buy any of it. I think that he and Kate will go to any lengths not to have to work to support their 8 children. They will continue to work the media and grift to do this.

All this talk about a party reminds me of my Sodahead days. You could send out invitations and the host could decorate and guests could actually "bring" music, drinks, food, gifts, via Photobucket or from your own file, etc. Us home bodies used to do this and it was quite festive and fun. You have a profile page that you decorate and you would get thank you "gifts" after via your profile page. You could go to someone's profile page and use their playlist. It was a place where people primarily talked about current events and hot topics like religion and politics. You build a little community of people who share your beliefs and then debate with groups that do not. It got pretty heated but remained civil. It was quite nice to check your profile and see who thought of you and what kind of well wishes they would deliver. Sometimes it would be the well thought out gift of a song for you or a beautiful bouquet of flowers. If you were absent for a few days there would be the thinking of you's, etc. It was nice but then they got really big and changed it and I don't even know how to navigate it anymore. I hope this is not blogs on blogs just the party talk made me think of it.

Buddy said...

I also don't believe some of the people on here who are claiming to "know" Jon. Sorry. Anyone can claim anything on the Internet. You may THINK you know him but honestly, come on. It's one thing to see someone in public with their children and how they behave and another totally behind the scenes. People behave differently in public. Jon's does not get a pass from me just because someone thinks he treats the kids better. He deceived people just the way Kate did. If you think she is a bad person for doing that, then you also must think Jon is. They did it together.

secret2 said...

Buddy worse than that he was, at best, complicent in Katie's abuse of their children, and at worst participated in it himself. He was right there with her denying his son's birthday cupcakes, disempacting C in the back of a van with cameras rolling, making fun of J's slight lisp etc etc.

Mel said...

Yeah, he was complicit. Denying the cupcakes and thinking it was funny horrified me. That was the last straw for me.

He *did* drink the koolaid for quite a while. Which I wonder if he has come to regret.

Kate was manipulative to him then, but not abusive? IMO, the abuse of Jon started a little later, as he started to rebel at her abuse of the kids. When he started putting his foot down, she went after *him*.

He doesn't get a free pass from me. But he does get points for eventually standing up for himself and the kids, and for generally being a nicer person. Have we ever seen him be demeaning to service people? Calling them Mr. Whatever Man?

I think he went along with Kate at first, and was an equal participant in the grifting. Not his ideas necessarily, but he went along with hers.

He seems needy, and maybe a lot naive. Which I wish he wasn't. He seems to be nice enough, but easily hood-winked. He seems to be led by the nose by whoever he's with at the time. Just as Kate manipulated him so did Michael Lohan, and that stupid attorney. Even Liz led him around. In that case it was good for him, but he was still being led around.

I think the person we want him to be, he isn't, and probably never will be. IMO, probably nice enough, but not too bright, kind of needy. But a million times better parent then Kate, who never should have had kids. She's a horrible mother.

The question above...what would one think of Jon if there was no Kate is a good one. Probably I'd think he's a little inept, ineffective, but nice enough. Good to the kids, obviously treasures them.

If I saw Kate without Jon, I'd still think god, what a horrible mother. What an ugly person. Yuck! Blech! Get me away from her. I feel soooo sorry for those kids.

Whew! What a week! Braces (and all the changes they bring) and VBS at our church! We all survived and enjoyed! Fun family times! GN!

Kate, keep snapping your pictures and posting them on Twitter. They only confirm what most of us already know. You are a pathological liar!

Not to mention this modern miracle wasn't really satisfying the kids on the RV trip. Remember when Hannah was telling the cameras how BORED they were, all they did was watch DVDs, they brought along about 200 DVDs and she was bored out of her mind watching DVDs. Poor kid, I don't blame her.

I know Kate, why don't you get off your lazy butt and put together some road trip games for the kids. License plate games, landmark games, travel board games, etc. Oh wait that would require effort.
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

It would also require that she ride in the same vehicle as her children. I'd betcha a quart of rumspringa that shit didnt happen either.

Here is the Jon that I loathe, the pathological liar who constantly refuses to own his bad behaviour. He lied about being $3500 in arrears on April 13, 2012. So lets give Kate credit where credit is due.

She didn't expose his lies until he went after her through Star magazine on August 2nd. At that time he was trying to suggest his monthly child support commitments were making it hard to pay his rent, and she has money, draw your own conclusions.

That is why Kate had her lawyer release that the court relieved Jon of all future payments on APril 27. She wasn't gracious about this, she made it sound like she just called up the courts and said I can pay, he can go away.

But we all know better. We know the court never totally releases a parent's financial obligations. They do create orders that ask for $1 per kid per month, which they let fall into arrears and never collect on. And that $1 a month is set so that if the parent ever gets back on their feet and has wages that can be garnished, they can be sued for child support.

So let's quit blowing smokescreens and pretending we just can't know anything unless all the court documents are unsealed. We can, Jon is a liar, Kate is no better, but in this case we know he lied.

Now please don't start a smokescreen about how Kate can only afford the kids because she is exploiting them for money. We get it, Jon still lied.

Mama Mia, how do you know he lied about arrears? Huh? It's even on the web site. Arrears can also be calculated as monthly payments you can also be "behind" on. His attorney is correct he doesn't have to pay CURRENT child support anymore (conveniently leaving out the 50-50 part) but he still is responsible for arrears. I don't think either of them should be talking about child support but I'm not seeing the lie from either of them. Jon is correct he has to pay arrears, the attorney is correct he has no current support payments. I think the attorney honestly didn't factor in that he would still have to pay monthly arrears until that's cleared up. An honest oversight.

If anything Jon was really on his best behavior when he was Ellen, that can't be a coincidence.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
It wasn't Ellen, it was TLC's lawsuit. The thing that can't be a coincidence is that the moment Ellen realized Jon was going to go straight back to tv and tabloids the second his gag order was up she left

It has always seemed that way to me too. Sad about that.

Ok, the braces thing is so weird! I was going to give her the benefit of the doubt because you can't see invisaline braces, right? But, she made a big stink about the wire coming off and the bracket popping off, getting stuck in the rug, etc...(which also didn't make sense!). So, you can't believe anything she says!!!

Like most of Kate's crappy pictures, that farm pic is so ridiculously grainy I don't know how anyone can say for sure the kids in the back don't have braces. Also any braces wearer knows there is a way to keep your upper lip over the top of your braces when you smile to more or less hide them for pictures.

JoyinVirginia, did you know the lines on red solo cups are measurements? The bottom one is 1 oz for hard liquor, the next is 5 oz for wine and the next is 12 oz for beer. I have grown up using solo cups and have just recently learned this. I guess I should pay more attention when I'm pouring my rumspringa.
