Discussion thread: Kate Plus 8 'Blind Date'

Kate Plus 8

Blind Date10:00 PM on TLC, 1 hr 2016 TV-PG
Kate goes to New York when she gets set up on a blind date, which includes a fancy dinner and a helicopter ride. Back at home, Mady and Cara find things to do to keep their younger siblings busy.

I imagine Mady has seen some pretty awful behavior from her mother. I think about the night she watched her father leave, packing things in garbage bags. That didn't happen in a vacuum. What was that day like? The days before? The phone calls and the days after. Did anyone comfort the children? Maybe witnessing so much, and seeing the worst of her mother's behavior, maybe this is why she can be so cruel. And honestly I think she's holding back some.

I understand that, but those of us raised in the sticks aren't necessarily sheltered. Good parents make efforts to expose children to people and cultures and experiences even if your small Christian farming community isn't exactly the inner city. Schools helped as well. In my blue collar public school we had opportunites to go to both Canada and Europe. We fundraised. I never felt sheltered.
-----
I agree--that doesn't sound sheltered to me, either. It doesn't sound like Kate had those opportunities. I think that because she has such a narrow world view--we have seen that over and over. iT sounds like there was a considerable lack of diversity and that her family life revolved around their faith community. There is nothing wrong with that. The only reason I said that was because the twins seem so much younger than my daughters were at that age. I was just wondering if one of the reasons was because she was sheltered and raised them the same way. I'm sorry if that offended anyone...that wasn't my intention at all.

I have a lot of admiration for the local posters here. And, it is true that I don't have a front row seat to her dysfunction and toxicity. I was simply encouraged to see that she was showing a more vulnerable side of herself, because she is usually so guarded. She has a long way to go before she is remotely normal, but, hey, It is tough to change behaviors. And, I think she is trying.

Hopefully the locals will report back if they see any changes, too.

Andrea seems quite bored with the kids and not happy being with them. She puts me off. I thought the younger kids were actually behaving like regular children on this episode. Mady and Cara have some problems with their mother. Cara does 'not care' if Kate remarries and Mady says "she asked for it" by having 8 kids. I'm also not as fond of Deanna as some of you are, but we just see her in her 'role' on the show.

They may have used a drone to capture the shot of the limo. Also, Kate explained during the show that she is not afraid of heights in a plane.

d TLC hired a small plane just to get that one camera shot? Maybe they hired the helicopter for the day to follow the limo for camera shots & then to use on the date? Just made me wonder

Probably a drone. My nephew has one and can film above his house no problemo.

I do agree that, especially during the dinner, she did seem to be acting naturally - no silly faces, rolling of eyes etc. I personally think that, for whatever reason, she's more relaxed around men & conversation comes easier to her. I was expecting a cringe-worthy date scene & instead it was...normal.

Thanks for the link to the show. I watched for 10 minutes. It was unbearable. The flaying fingertips, the valley girl talk (is this woman forty???); it was dull, boring and no way will she get a dating show.

So, attending a small Christian high school with less than 20 in her class seems sheltered to me.

I understand that, but those of us raised in the sticks aren't necessarily sheltered. In my blue collar public school we had opportunites to go to both Canada and Europe. We fundraised. I never felt sheltered.

*******

Neither did I.

I went to a small private school, but was involved in activities in the community and church, played sports and coached, was active in the local theater, held class offices, cheered in competitions, and I most definitely was not sheltered!

I suppose what's sauce for the goose, and all of that. I understand that to some who grew up in the big city, anything rural would appear to be a sheltered life, and we poor souls were isolated from the real world. I spent two summers in an educational study program abroad before I graduated from college in the big city and never once did I consider myself sheltered. It all depends from where one sits when making an observation about being sheltered. To those of us in this area, Kate was not cut off from society.

"How kind of you....does it have a view?"

****

LOL, yes, if you don't mind gators snapping at your heels and snakes coiling around your legs. It's a freshwater swamp and bids are coming in right now from developers who are concerned that it's in an area designated as a ecological wildlife preserve.

Buying swampland was a successful financial venture for old Walt! It has all kinds of possibilities if you can get around the developing restrictions!

Now instead of wanting to be a fly on TFW's wall, Gladys will wish she was a drone in her driveway!

If this was a real-live dating situation, what would Lites Out Vann do for outing #2? Can't very well get away with burgers and bowling after that first date extravaganza. But I suppose it's a moot point, since it was just a ratings stunt.
Realest reality, right?

I was trying to imagine a conversation about books:

V: So, what are you reading now?
K: Um, um...well, I've got this book on my nightstand by someone named Nicole Something.
V: Well, what was the last thing you read?
K: Um, um...well, I've read all the books I wrote.
And I read a page of "Desperaux" to my kids on TV about 7 years ago. But I love American Idol!
Ask me about American Idol!
V: (to waiter) Check, please!

@Paige_Kate8fan @MiloandJack @Kateplusmy8 Agree! I think they have been on several dates away from cameras. Being public is a deal breaker.

AuntieAnn said...

The scene is the bathroom when Deanna was applying the clown make-up on Kate was so overly scripted it could gag a maggot but still, it was worth a laugh.

Conversation between Kate and Deanna:

Kate: "Did he say that he'd never heard of me?"

Deanna: "We didn't really go into it but ...I'm sure he's seen your face...."

And the TLC editing crew cuts directly to a close-up shot of Kate's complexion. lol!

They must not like her very much.

I like when Milo insults Kate unintentionally. And I think it's unfair to imply Kate only picked Jon for his looks. Even Kate herself talked in the past, during the marriage, about all the qualities about Jon she admired and was attracted to. She wrote about him kindly in her journal and her first book. I hate to defend Kate but to imply she was just some dolt that picked Jon because she found him attractive, I guess because she was younger and stupid and unwise and wanted half Asian babies, is simply not true by Kate's own words.

I think TFW struggles with her stories because that's what they are: stories. When you tell the truth, you don't have anything to keep track of.
Either you've dated since your divorce or you haven't. It's not up for interpretation. Yet she told 2 conflicting versions of that story.

&&&&

I think that's right on the money. 100%.

KellyAnne said...

When the camera zoomed in on the picture frame of Kate and Jamie, is that a wine bottle next to the framed photo? And, oh was that closet a mess!

I thought the outfit she wore on the date was awful. If she is going to insist on wearing miniskirts, the only way to pull it off at her age is with a nice pair of flat sandals, or ballet flats. And the pink blouse, while it provided coverage, was not the least bit flattering. However, the dress Deanna had on that day was very cute and I think the fit and flare cut would have been flattering for Kate. Paired with a low heel like Deanna wore, or cute flats, Kate would have looked nice. Much better than the desperate housewife look she sported for the date.

I also don't think it will ever be a happy household until the kids stop being partentified.

The kids need to feel like they are the kids and she is the parent. The kids should not be able to walk all over her or feel like they have her over a barrel. It's terrible for them emotionally.

Sure, a kid thinks they "want" that, but it makes them terribly unsettled. Just like a dog without any human alpha in their life is an unhappy dog.

I give Vann a pass on this. Deanna didn't seem to mention Kate is Kate. We didn't go into it means what it says, she didn't go into it with him.

Oh, I forgot.....oops. Yeah right.

You can't vet someone if you have no reason to know you should be vetting them in the first place. He thought Deanna was his vet by recommending her in the first place. He got hoodwinked and I'm sorry his buddies want him to carry bricks because of it, lol! Dude didn't know!

I suppose what's sauce for the goose, and all of that. I understand that to some who grew up in the big city, anything rural would appear to be a sheltered life, and we poor souls were isolated from the real world.

&&&&

Yeah I get that. And having lived in a huge metropolis and in small town middle America I've seen both sides of the coin. The only big difference in the city is the variety of activities available and the variety of food. I think I was a little sheltered when it came to really good ethnic food but that's because it wasn't available. But I was raised to try new things and be open and it has been wonderful to have a whole new variety of food choices as an adult living here. Not having those options when I was a kid makes me feel more appreciative of it I guess, not like I was really "sheltered."

As for diversity, if your parents raised you right, meeting all sorts of people different from you in the big bad city shouldn't strike you as anything noteworthy on a daily basis. It doesn't anyone I know not from here. I see no direct evidence Kate's parents failed her in any kind of major way including "sheltering" her. That is her perception, but in all of the numerous specific examples she provided of this failure (most recently, having to do landscaping as a child), I'm not buying what she is selling. Her childhood appears to be normal and blue collar. Go cry a river and meet the rest of the majority of Americans.

I've met a lot of nannies and have never seen a nanny with so little personality. She looks like being with the kids makes her constipated.

Not my taste at all. I'd fire her. Children need someone happy and positive who cares for them. She is argumentative with them and grouchy. No thank you. I'd be shocked if she's a real nanny associated with an agency.

&&&&&

I don't know about that.

She herself said she went with her grandparents to Canada frequently. Fishing was it? That sounds wonderful and opens you up to different people and cultures right there. Canada is different enough in many ways to be a great outside the box experience for a child. Having grown up close to Canada, even the poorest of families were able to take a few trips to Canada every once in awhile. So apparently did she.

Many churches offer mission trip opportunities even if it's just a few states away. Her did was a pastor and her denomination is very mission focused. I can't imagine that wasn't available to her. Even to Philly, or Jersey? Whether she WANTED to go is another matter.

Opportunities may have been well available to her but maybe she misbehaved and didn't earn them, or maybe she was too lazy to fundraise for them, or maybe she chose to do something else with her time instead like go be with a boyfriend.

Like others, I don't take her version of events as gospel. There are two sides to every story and I've never heard her parents' version.

Rainbirdie said...

---
"We really didn't go into it" is a pretty vague comment - Deanna didn't actually say that Vann didn't know he was going on a date with Kate Gosselin. And this was not a real blind date. He had to have signed a filming release. The date was planned, so he probably was given an itinerary. He knows Deanna in some capacity & her work on the show is not a secret. There's no way he did not know in advance that his date was going to be Kate Gosselin. And despite the fact that he said he had never watched the show, I cannot possibly believe he did not google her name for more info.

Hehe, that's cute KellyAnne.

Online dating isn't tacky like that anymore Sue, the whole I like walks in the rain or whatever. Dating profiles guide you through a lot of detailed questions based on research. You can choose to not answer them thoroughly and some people don't, but someone who is looking for a thorough profile, as many wise people are, so they can get a good idea of someone first--will probably pass on them.

And actually, research has shown the more time and effort you spend on your dating profile the more success you will have with dating. There was an interesting tedtalk about this. I'm sure sparse profiles find their spouse, but I imagine it's harder.

I so agree. Totally negative vibe. She acted like dealing with the kids was annoying - she even said something about the oven only had 3 racks & there are "a million kids". And then she pointed out that it was a school night so doing any other fun tasks would be determine by how long it took the kids to clean up the pizza mess. She is so obviously a nanny following Kate's rules. And the baseball cap on backward was a terrible look on her.

Rainbirdie said...

Maybe it's good that Kate hired a nanny that isn't warm & fuzzy. Might keep the kids from being so devastated when she either gets fired or quits.

Moreover, if they were filming, then there would have been child labor laws to consider. I would think that with minors there needed to be an adult present on the set, and that doesn't include the TLC crew.

From what I have seen online, Andrea is Carla's niece (Ashley's cousin) and is from Montana (I believe she is part of the Montana family TFW says stayed with the kids during her Celebrity Apprentice time). From what I have seen, she moved back to PA last year (gee, I wonder why). No idea what kind of education/training/experience she has working with children.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

Leslie (#34), I think Andrea was also there to help the story line of how dating might be challenging for TFW because she needs a babysitter every time she goes out. It's an imaginary obstacle, considering how often TFW is away from her kids. Oh, and since they do actually have a living father. But when the evening was planned out on paper, the babysitter was probably an important element.

Yes, every single moment of that date was worked out in a production office. Isn't it romantic?

Most people think they're witnessing something natural, as it's happening. But the fact is, all these episodes are planned well in advanced and are highly orchestrated with tight filming schedules.

Tucker's Mom - I agree completely. He knew exactly what he was getting into and who she is.

People can speculate all they want but does it really matter what his reasons were? He went on the date, who cares! We all know that was just another story line for the show. Nothing more than a toe in the water to see if a dating show will fly. He'll never speak publicly about it because he signed a CA. I bet his friends will get the inside scoop though!

What is the Carla connection? When did Kate meet her? At church? After tups born? Her name pops up every now and then over the years. Why her pack of relatives are involved with Kate? I know Kate sold her the old kitchen cabinets and Ashley, her daughter, was a babysitter.

The kids were wild playing outside with that parachute. Mady and Cara were grumpy and did join not join in. They supervised by yelling and calling the tups names. I can see that Mady and Cara are not mature enough to watch the tups. A couple of sourpusses like their mother. Andrea acted like she wished she was somewhere else but I don't blame her.

TLC stinks said...

I agree. The blind date was a pilot to see if a dating show would fly. We are back to that because her romantic interest in the next "season" was going to be Jeff with all that entails. I suspect Jeff's kids gave him an earful and his ex was probably not pleased being hounded by Radar, plus their dirty laundry was aired. Normal people get embarrassed with that type of attention, unless you are a narcissist like Kate.

I really do buy this scenario after hearing Deanna's comments about how she conveniently didn't get into who Kate was. I can see her pitching it as it's a dating show on TLC or it's a family show on TLC and being intentionally vague. Clearly he knew it was going to be filmed and there would be cameras but I don't believe for a second he did his research.

Guys can be so whatever whatever sometimes and it's perfectly plausible to me he never asked Kate's name or googled her. They don't ask the burning 20 questions someone like me would or other women.

I agree. Even at 15, they need an adult there. They're old enough not to burn the house down but not mature enough to do the things they need to do every day without an adult on their case. Also Andrea can drive them places.

I wish Andrea had more personality, but it's better than the twins watching everyone.

It sounds like Andrea has been with the family for years, especially if she went to Australia. She seems to be in the "I'm over it" stage. If that's the case she should quit. It's not right for the children to have such a sour-puss as their nanny.

Gee, Jamesvader, these people must be Lifetime watchers! Kate has met her Prince Charming! And better, he's not married!!!! How could an accomplished bachelor not want Kate and her wild children? And live in an idyllic small town hours away from NYC where he works?

Ol' reliable Gladys found an opportunity to bash Jon again. As I always say, she doesn't give half a damn about the G kids. Not sure how she's already managed to judge that Vann's character is "lightyears" ahead of Jon's just by watching about 5 minutes of footage of him scarfing down Italian food. But I watched years of Jon caring for 8 small children with love, gentleness and kindness, and that told me plenty about his character.

One million. That's all she can carry. The ball is in TLC's court.

Sad but true (#58), thanks for the ratings! I must admit, I was thinking they'd go up to about 1.5, so this is encouraging. And the clip show should dip even lower.

I think the twins might babysit when the cameras are off more often, as they weren't too nice or interested-- old news. But Andrea allowed for plot development- talking about dates and how hard it is to feed, what did she say, a million kids, with such a limited kitchen!! I don't remember her from before at all- to me she is new this 'season' But I don't care for her, her attitude or her baseball cap.

I guess that means people aren't interested in seeing Kate date. Big surprise there. And there was nothing else on TV that night to compete.

@GeeWhiz is clueless. Kate has been on dates with Steve and Jeff.

Wasn't interesting that Mady suggested what Kate should wear to go clubbing? Maybe it's me, but what does a 15 year old know about adult clubbing? And what she picked out would show major cleavage.

Kate looked like a tranny in her date outfit, IMO. So not classy.

Showbuzz has the ratings from Tuesday. Kate got 1.079 million viewers and a .34 share. That's 200,000 less than last week's show. Looks like Kate's date wasn't so hotly anticipated after all.

Her average ratings for the seven shows is just over 1 million. Probably good enough to get the kids to film over spring break again for some summer specials. I don't think Kate's dating show is going anywhere though.

The Little Couple lead her in with 1.359 million viewers and a 0.38 share which was a pretty substantial drop for their ratings too.

I agree, Flimsy, but apparently, according to some you can tell by reading a person's profiles. You can tell "exactly" what kind of a person one is. Milo must have read Vann's profiles.

I guess people are not all that interested in TFW dating since ratings were down.
