Happy Thanksgiving

Oops, that's not a turkey! We're always searching for reality worth watching to tell you about, and here's another. If you're looking for something light after a heavy Thanksgiving meal, try some sushi. Jiro Dreams of Sushi, that is. Jiro Dreams is a 2011 Japanese documentary (it has subtitles) about Michelin three-star sushi chef Jiro Ono, whose small, simple restaurant makes the best sushi in the world.

Ono has been working nearly his whole life. At age seven, his alcoholic father abandoned him, and at age nine, he started working in a sushi shop. He never stopped.

Ono's hard work and dedication is admirable, but his perfectionism is controversial among some. Once, one of his employees had to make 200 batches of egg sushi before Ono was satisfied. His sons, who are in their 50's, are still waiting to take over the restaurant. Ono admits he treats them harder than anyone else who worked for him. How far do you have to go to make a perfect plate, and can you go too far?

Discuss Thanksgiving, recipes, Black Friday, whatever suits your fancy, and Jiro, which is available for streaming or rent on Netflix, as well as Amazon.com. Enjoy your holiday!

Admin -- Have you been following the story of the kid from "Two and a Half Men" calling the show filth and urging people not to watch it? That might be worth a post. I wonder if he's another kid pushed into work by his parents. Apparently he was underage when the last contract renewal came up, so he may not have had any say in the matter.

I'm not going on KKs twitter or blog or whatever to look at the slop. It's my dinner time and I don't wan to ruin my appetite. The descriptions here are hard enough to stomach, LOL. BTW -- I have some Italian friends and they shudder at the idea of calling something "cacciatore" and then serving it over rice. In fact, they tell me I shouldn't call my cacciatore "cacciatore" because I leave out the mushrooms. Some things are sacred.

Thanks for responding Readerlady. That makes sense.

fidosmommy said...

She tweeted that picture and we commented on her "cacciatore". We said the sausage should have been browned first. Then the recipe comes out, she is certain to instruct that the sausage should be browned. Yeah, and she'd never admit she reads here.

It's easy to see she used canned mushrooms. I guess they have their place in this world, but fresh are so much nicer. Mushrooms don't have much of a taste, but fresh ones do make a difference in a recipe, IMO.

I almost forgot -- OT -- for all you readers out there who have Kindles or downloaded the Kindle app to your computer. Amazon's daily deal today is 1000's of books marked way down. I just checked out the mystery section and there are over 800 mysteries, most costing less than $3. Grand Masters, like Charlotte MacLeod, Ruth Rendell, a few Ellery Queen, Dorothy L. Sayers, Patricia Wentworth, Hugh Pentecost, and contemporary writers like Anne Perry and Susan Dunlap and Donald Westlake, David Handler, Stuart Kaminsky. Really worth checking out. Their Daily sales usually end at Midnight, PST, so you have some time to look at the lists. Just go to Amazon and search Daily Deal.

Certain fan blog moderators targeted certain haters. Years ago. Followed their patterns, kept track of ips, screen names etc.

The hater was terminated because 3 separate members of that fan blog contacted human resources and the final straw was when hater tweeted that the pie woman was a psycho bitch. Fidosmommy, my SIL is Korean. My brother met her in Korea when he was stationed there in the Army in the 1970's. When they visited our family she would always make the kim chee which thrilled my dad. He would eat it and the sweat would just pour off his forehead (sorry, hope that's not too much info). But he LOVED it! It was too spicy for me as I have a sensitive stomach but it was fun to watch our dad enjoy it so much.

Do you think Kate ate any of that cacciatore?
Or was that a yogurt for dinner night?

NJGal51 said...

Kate, calling a dish cacciatore doesn't make it cacciatore.

I think where Kate went wrong with the sausage was to brown the links whole. If you're going to serve the sausage sliced you need to slice it before browning so that each bite sized piece is brown and crisp. If you're going to cook the links whole you need to cook them a bit longer.

What Kate is presenting is a "dump and dine" dish. Dump whatever you've got into a skillet, cook the hell out of it and dine. Kate seems to be quite fond of the dump and dine method from what we've seen in the past. Kate, "dump and dine" is mine and I do not give you permission to use it. Everyone here is my witness!

One of my favorite comfort meals is kimchi stew/soup. Whenever we go out for it I always bring my own container for them to put the leftovers in. You do not want any kimchi dish leaking in your car! Luckily we're in a military town so we've got at least 3 good Korean restaurants. I think kimchi stew/soup will be in my future this week.

Cliff Notes said...

NJGal51 said...

One more comment. Part of Kate's cooking instructions are "In the same pan, combine all vegetables except the scallions and mushrooms. Saute until cooked, but still crunchy. Add the sausage, oregano and wine. Cover and cook for 30 minutes over medium high heat.". Doesn't cooking covered over medium high defeat he purpose of sautéing until cooked but still crunchy? Cooking cover over medium high heat for 30 minutes is basically boiling it for 30 minutes. Not ver appetizing for a sausage and pepper type meal.

Could she have smartened up and realized that her relationship with Kate and the personal information she shared on Twitter (which is never really gone - some of it's posted here and elsewhere) was costing her work?

Twitter usually rights itself in a few hours - I'll check in tomorrow.

I did the unthinkable - I went to twazzup.com to check on kart's twitter numbers. Please don't hate me - LOL.

She is cranking in those tweets on her account at an astounding [wait for it!] ***15*** tweets per hour. Boy, I bet her head is spinning...

I can hear the shouting now "hey you kids, go upstairs, mommy dearest is busy, busy, busy reading on twitter... er, I mean I'm 'working'"

Zoiks! 15 TPH --- the only one who doesn't realize she is dunzo, kaput, last year's hazbeen, irrelevant, unimportant, discarded and forgotten..... is kart! I often wonder what color the sky is in kart's world....

I think she will limp along for a while, but for all intents and purposes, she no longer exists in celebrityville.

her website is an embarrassment, her tweets are pitiful, her followers have dwindled to negligible tweets of inane content, she gets no contacts from her celebrity friends like Tony, Pamela Anderson, Terri from downunder...

All her *so-called lifelong friends* at DWTS, we are hearing no more from Deanna, and who's that guy in NYC who USED to do her straw? Haven't heard anything about her straw trips lately.

And purseboy seems to be MIA... seems he might have finally had to go out and get a real, paying job.

Personally I hate to find pleasure in someone else's trouble. For kart, I make an exception because I hope and pray that this might make her stay home with her kids and FINALLY realize what treasures they can be.

Maybe some time to reflect will prompt her visit to a doc for some therapy and meds to chill out her harsh, abusive personality.

Yeah, I agree..... won't ever happen.

Hope everyone had a good holiday. I've been staying away from here mostly because she makes my stomach turn. Hoffman's book did me in. But the cool posters (and you know who you are, you party animals! LOL) draw me back.

OK...maybe it's just me, but posting under a different name in order to bash someone, is in my opinion, really two-faced and hypocritical. Also, what ever it is that kHate cooked doesn't resemble cacciatore in any way shape or form. As an Italian and a retired chef I am insulted and disgusted by her slop!

Readerlady,

I LOVE it when you talk about books and cats! I just started re-reading the John Grisham series. It's been a few years and I'd forgotten what a gifted writer he is.

I like hearing about things other than the crap that is kart. I know that we wouldn't be here if she wasn't such an ass, but it's been fun to talk with so many articulate and funny ladies about so many interesting topics.

Speaking of, weren't you one of the ones of us trying GABA Calm? I used it for a while and found it wasn't as effective after a couple of months. Did you find that also?

Jane, thanks for keeping us updated on Deanna the Defender. I kind of doubt it's a Twitter glitch but I'll be interested to see it confirmed. It does make me go...hmmmm. A falling out perhaps?
It's very quiet over there. I'm glad there's been a partial boycott by the haters. It's made a big difference. It lets us see what a ghost town her Twitter really is.
-------------

The boycott/slowdown/moving on/whatever is big. I hope the non-fans realize what a difference this makes and stick to it. As for a falling out between the pals, no idea! Deanna's responses to the sheeple have Kate's Twitter name in them but that's because the name was included in the original tweet, there haven't been any direct tweets to Kate.

I read about this Twitter "boycott" here...don't know where it started, but Kate's twitter has slowed down a great deal. I was surprised that there wasn't an avalanche of "OMG! Your such a great cook! I wish I could make that!" after she posted the recipe today.
That usually drives traffic to her Twitter.

I don't watch DWTS anymore and it's not because Kate isn't there, dancing like the wooden Robax woman, but because I think they're pushing people who aren't trained dancers too far. Broth is part of a healthier food lifestyle we are working on. Its been fun and enlightening at the same time. We're trying to eat more healthy whole foods and have eliminated all processed foods and anything white from our diets.

Kale is an acquired taste, and I'm not there yet. But we are working on it. I heard that if you massage your kale it breaks down the cell walls and makes it less bitter. I noticed a little bit of change but not much.

I don't pick up bitter with kale but what I do for rapini is to blanch it for 2-3 minutes. After that, I generally saute it up with garlic and red pepper flakes and I notice a good reduction in the bitterness.

It was so sweet when he surprised her with a fancy white wedding gown when she wasn't expecting it. I think that the assessment was that they were the only ones who would be able to make it through the winter. Oh goodie! You are talking about British TV. Can I chime in?

Downton Abbey: Bates the valet was still in prison at the end of Season 2, convicted of killing his estranged wife. Did he or didn't he? Was it Sir Richard who murdered her, not Mr Bates? Season 3 has already aired in the UK.

Brendan Coyle (Mr Bates) was also in Larkrise to Candleford. Anyone else here watch that? It is a very gentle show.

Return to Cranford was also very good, along similar lines. The great Judi Dench is in that, and also in As Time Goes By, probably my favorite sitcom.

Call the Midwife: It is based on two autobiographical books by Jennifer Worth. I read the first one one Kindle and have requested the second to be "Kindlized" too. I highly recommend the first book. Loved Miranda Hart as Chummy.

I like Doc Martin, and also recommend the Vicar of Dibley with Dawn French -- although the humor in that is very British and may not translate as well to an American audience.
