Jon and Kate's Law: PA Rep. Murt's Child Labor Bill signed into law

Thank you, Rep. Murt, for the more than two years you devoted to this important cause.
A child on reality T.V. is working, not playing.
"Remember, the kids are just playing in front of the cameras, so." Kate Gosselin, Larry King Live, August 25, 2009.

A child on reality T.V. deserves to be paid fairly for their work.

The original TLC contracts provided for payment only to Kate and Jon, not to the children. After more than three years of filming, TLC finally established a trust fund for the children, in November 2009. The Gosselin children first appeared on screen in May 2006.

A child on reality T.V. deserves to have his or her money protected from their parents and others who may seek, either intentionally or unintentionally, to misappropriate it.

A child on reality T.V. deserves to have his or her health, safety, comfort, happiness and education put before obligations to their T.V. show.

Those are just some of the reforms that Rep. Tom Murt has been working for more than two years to get Pennsylvania to understand that they need. Yesterday, Governor Tom Corbett signed House Bill 1548, which affords reality T.V. kids and regular child actors the same protections. Among the reforms, it requires trust funds be set up, a parent or guardian must be allowed within sight and sound of the children at all times (the Gosselins were filmed more than once without Kate or Jon on set), and, perhaps most importantly, requires a studio teacher on set (a licensed teacher), even on reality T.V. shows, to facilitate plenty of time for mandated schoolwork and rest. Finally, an independent set of eyes on our children who are working.

A brief explanation of the hours a kid can work, which were modeled after California's strict laws and have been a little misunderstood in the press: Babies under 6 months can be on set a maximum of 2 hours. Ages 6 months to 2 years old can be on set for four hours, but can only work on camera for two. Ages 2 to 6 can be on set 6 but work just three hours. Kids ages 6 to 9 can work 4 hours a day but are allowed to be on set for 8. Kids age 9 to 16 can be on set for 9 hours, but can only work 5. The rest of the time must be devoted to rest and schoolwork. There is a mandatory rest period of at least 12 hours between consecutive shooting days. So if the family stays up late to film a segment about fireworks until 11 p.m., the children are not permitted to start work again the next day until 11 a.m.

Should the Gosselins ever film again, Kate will find herself facing some big changes on set. Thank you, Rep. Murt!

Kate needs to pack a bag and go to Steve's or an inland hotel. She is incapable of taking care of herself in the event of a weather emergency.
I hope for the dog's sake he is no longer on the premises.
Last yr's storm left her without electric power for a brief period, yet she was too 'scared' to strike a match to light her gas stove.
I'd say she was an imbecile, but don't want to insult imbeciles.....

From my recollection, Vick was convicted and served his time. If the NFL gave him the green light to return to his profession, heck, he has to earn a living.
Same goes for Martha Stewart.
I don't admire either person, but if they served their time they have a right to earn a living.

As far as outing Kate's fans, who cares where they live, how many kids they have? that's just something that shouldn't matter. I do have an issue with her taking advantage of minor-aged fans though.

Yeah. Sure. Kate has not generator. Actually, I believe her. I don't think she has a generator. I think she has a whole house back up system. After a really bad storm where we live, where we didn't have power for 6 days, we looked into generators/systems and something to power the whole house only costs $10,000.

Never mind the solar panels on the roof, here's the listing information on their OLD house:

"Large brick cape cod w/great location & tons of extras! GEOTHERMAL SYSTEM W/ BACKUP ELECTRIC, new bambo HW floors & new carpet throughout (except LL). ADT wireless security system, lg 22×12 covered rear deck, laundry rm on 1st fl w/2 sets of Whirlpool washers & dryers included in sale! Also included in sale are generator for house & refrigerator in kitchen."

If they had geothermal in that house, with electrical backup, I'm more than sure she has a back up system in the new house. She doesn't need a generator.

Source: http://news.lalate.com/2009/07/29/kate-gosselin-new-house/

Her lies annoy me.

If you read the listing better, that was for her old house....this home said no such thing.

You are a much better person than I, I would surely 'interact' with those neighbors and make darn certain those dogs didnt make it into my yard. Good on you, I hope your dogs and your family never get hurt by those other dogs should they make it into your yard. Maybe they just want to play :)

Oh, that reminds me, once one of rotts got out- we had two, and our nieghbor's 7 year old was outside playing. Our dog went straight after him. We lived on a cul-de-sac and there was nowhere for him to run, but anyway, my mom was yelling "dont run dont run" and I was running after the dog and the boy froze and when our dog jumped on him, he licked his face to death- he wanted to play! Oh my goodness- we couldn't believe it. People avoided our house because of our dogs, and here the one was a big ol' friendly baby. My mom got lucky on that one. I was so relieved for that little boy.

Boy, I don't know how you guys in hurricane-prone areas do it....having to go through this so many times. I can't even imagine being without power and water for weeks. What a nightmare.

Got car into the garage...big ordeal. Never tried doing that...we've always used it to store things in.
We've been eating up everything out of the refrigerator....almost empty. I froze a bunch of zip-top baggies full of water as suggested here...just in case.
Decided to take a risk and color my hair (picturing me having to venture out during prolonged power outage)...have to wash it out in about 20 minutes. But the wind here is not a factor yet so decided to go for it.
As soon as the wind picks up will make several pots of coffee and set aside.

Found 3 small extra flashlights, some extra batteries, one of those little battery-operated fake pillar candles and 3 regular pillar candles. Amazing what you can find sitting around your house when you go searching. :D

Now worried hubby will get stuck at work tonight (works 11-7 in hospital) and will have to stay because day shift won't be able to make it in.
Powering up the cells and looking for a small t-shirt for the dog in case of thunder/roaring wind (thanks for the tip for that too).

They are apparently shutting down all mass transit in NYC at 7 pm. tonight. Will be interesting to talk to son and DIL after this is all over (they live in Astoria and take transit to Manhattan). They both walked home over the Brooklyn Bridge on 9-11.

Hope Kate G. is prepared and if the children are with her, hope she has plenty of little battery-powered games, etc. for them.....and plenty of extra non-perishable snacks....and water, flashlights and batteries.

I think someone asked earlier- who has a spare generator? During Frankenstorm?

Right, ok. I hope Kate paid for it. You never know...

mamaK said...

The information I posted, I labeled as info on their OLD house. I don't know anything about the area, or that neighborhood, but around here Geothermal is unusual and sounds like something that they might have put in (during the Sara Snow period maybe?)

Even if they didn't put it in, I'm sure they dealt with storms in the old house and lost power, etc. And with that kinda system for the OLD house, I could see Kate saying well, why don't we have that here? and putting in a system at the NEW house if it didn't already have it.

Really, it is a lot of speculation, but I don't think you go from an average sized house with a emergency heating system to a MASSIVE house without thinking about how to run it when the lights go out.

mamaK said...

Someone like Kate with her "I need HOT coffee" "my kids need pancakes" I think would require a back up system, especially when it wouldn't be a lot of money for her.

Besides, the batteries from the solar panels on the roof would run somethings for a bit. And those we know she DOES have!

As far as that goes, Robert said her driveway was CLEAR, the roads in front of her house were CLEAR, and all the businesses in town were fully operational.
She's just an idiot.

I would not be the least bit surprised to discover that KK has a permanent generator, and maybe even a second one....and she is too stupid to even know!! It seems just like her normal behavior to get all stressed out over something that wasn't even necessary, but being all over twitter, asking idiotic questions in her tweets.
I can see her getting in an uproar about not having a generator, frantically calling until she found a used one, which she SAYS she bought, and then someone (probably Jon) telling her to go to a certain spot, filp a switch, and presto, she's got power!! Then even knowing she has power, she can still tweet how horrible things are, and get more sympathy from the equally idiotic KK fans!

Dwindle, I think I live not too far from you and it is raining like crazy and starting to blow a bit. I think it's that "reverse" front they've been talking about that is supposed to merge with the big storm. Always seems strange when the weather comes from the southeast! Made my kids, who were making a pit stop here (to eat, of course!) on the way back to college after a Penn State visit, leave earlier than planned. And spouse's crew had to go into work to control for flooding up your way. If this amount of rain does merge with the big storm, then wow, everyone here and east is in for it.

I remember when Ike came through Ohio with the sustained 75/hr winds - now that was interesting! Our kids along with the cousins were outside purposely throwing a football with the wind and it blew over a half mile away and over the roof of the big barn! Then we all sat in the house with the lantern and gas fireplace lit and talked about school, life, past vacation fun (THOSE, Kate, are the kinds of real memories our kids have, not manufactured).

I continue to be ALMOST embarrassed for Kate at her attention-getting fake mental density and inability to cope with weather preparations, which of course millions of others manage to do on a regular basis.

I think what mamak was showing what the old house had as back up service for power. Even if TLC installed it to still be able to work during a power outage, they would have wanted it with the new house too. I find it hard to believe if the new house didn't have back up that they would have left the portable ones at the old house. Moving that far out with no back up, especially if you already owned portables is insane. I am sure the nice doctor that owned that house before they moved in already had it there.

It's only about 20 mph right now. He is saying the worst is yet to come and the problem is the duration. And this histrionic weather guy on my TV is promising the world will probably end for us here starting early Tuesday morning into Wednesday. Sigh.

I agree with y'all that it's entirely possible that the house has some type of back-up system. If it does, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that Jon tried to explain it to KK when they moved in and she tuned him out, as she always did. It also wouldn't surprise me to learn that those solar panels haven't been maintained or serviced since Jon left. He seemed to be the one who took all the responsibility for household maintenance.

Dwindle and Librarylady -- interesting how weather differs so much just 100 miles apart. It's very grey and gloomy and depressing here, but is only just beginning to rain a little bit. More like occasional spits than a real rain, so far. However, I went out a bit earlier to pick up the morning paper (gotta get those Q-pons, LOL) and run a couple of errands. Decided to bring my deck chairs in, too, because the forecast is for gusts of wind over 50 MPH tonite and tomorrow. When I went out, there was no wind. When I came out of the store, it was blowing hard and felt like the temperature had dropped 20 degrees. What a time to leave my jacket at home!

Hope everyone is prepared and all hunkered down now. Stay safe. KK, if you're reading here, and we all know you do, YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!

I'm SO glad that it's gotten chilly and isn't hot and humid. I can deal with power outages SO much better when it's not hot and smothering.

Hey, speaking of gadgets...since so many here are in my age range....did any of your children have those darn little "nano-pets" back in the day? My sons loved them but then when they got tired of all the work involved in keeping them from dying.......I ended up having to go to work with 3 nano-pets hooked to my uniform and would have to go and feed, water, love and exercise these darn things every time I went on break. Anyone remember them?
Oh....and Furby. Yeah, we had one of them too. I still remember that creepy little moaning noise it made. :D

I see I spoke too soon. KK's going on and on talking about having no gas for her generator. That doesn't mean that she doesn't have generators already....she's talking about her used one she ''bought''. I see she's started her ''Hurricane Sandy Dairy''......all the better to fill with fake problems, like her destroyed 30 trees last year? This is going to keep her on a roll....DAYS to moan about how horrible all this is for KK, all designed to get her cretin fans worried about her. Think of the attention she can get, since this weather event is expected to last for days!!

At least she's aware that we've been talking about her using her gas stove, and isn't moaning about no hot coffee or food. Well, not yet, I suppose I should say!!

Kate truely is a goofus!

I never read such goofy tweets as the recent ones. First, she says, she got a used generator, then today, the stores are out, then some company, are selling solar ones, but Kate says she has a gas one, but wants another one. Now she claims to be preparing for Sandy, then says, she has been all weekend. Sorry Kate, one day does not mean whole weekend. Then she is baking bread again and needs to take another shower, just in case? WHAT! Yesterday she downloaded the weather to her phone, & watched the weather channel, today she is asking her tweeters, where Sandy is? Is that GOOFY or what? So, Kate, go watch the weather channel, or is the weather channel too scientific for you. Maybe any of your kids can interpret, what the weather channel says. I had no idea Kate you were that stupid. I recall the last tups birthday that was filmed, bad weather was coming, and PB was weather boy for party, and had to tell you to get kids out of pool and get them inside. Cause, I don't know Kate, if I see dark clouds and hear thunder and see lighting, that might be a hint to get kids out of pool and everyone else in house. What a goofy doofus!

Hahaha! They only tell you this every other minute on the weather channel. That's so funny!
Someone should tell her it's headed to the Gulf Coast and she needn't worry. That it suddenly made a complete U-turn and is headed back south again. Just kidding.

Can't really comment re: generators, etc. I know nothing about them really. You have to keep them outside, right? So you don't die from carbon monoxide poisoning? They use propane? They showed all these folks buying these big propane canisters on TV and I assumed they use them for generators.
-----
Oh....and forgot to include hubby here with me....when he's not at work...and he could very well get stuck at work (works 11-7 in a hospital) tomorrow. But he's not done much but bark instructions and orders at me and I did all the running around.

He's one who will practically sleep through a power outage all night long....then make every attempt possible to get out with his car during the day just to go SOMEWHERE.
I have trouble sleeping in power outages....but with it being cool this time....maybe it won't be too bad.

I think we ate just about everything in the fridge. There's a few diet jello's, one stick of butter and a container of half and half.....and some crystal lite, 4 yogurts and a few eggs....and that's about it.
When I heat the coffee using the candle/stove burner thing....I want to be able to open the fridge and get my half and half and not have to worry about opening it too much. Once the fridge isn't cool any more, I'll hopefully get to use all those bags of ice I froze per suggestions here.

Kate has probably arranged for the solar generator company to deliver a solar generator free of charge to her home.

How stupid to be tweeting that you don't have a gas can or flashlights or batteries or gas for the generator? And then she tweets that Sandy will "ruin our fun and destroy our house". OMG. We can't have Sandy ruining your "fun". Are the kids even home? Doubt it. I even doubt that she is at home. She should have gone to LA for the marathon.

This truly will be a learning experience for Ms. Katie Irene, won't it? After this, she'll be smart enough to have some gas cans on hand.

Actually, after this, she should really get her head out of her butt and start paying attention to things which may be going on outside of her own little world. (Either that, or Milo's going to need to move to PA to be near her to keep her informed.)

And does she really need to tweet a "diary" of this experience for her drooling groupies? Good grief!

In seriousness though, aside from being a bit low IQ, having an anxiety disorder, having racing thoughts that she cant control, being lazy as all sin, she is also quite childish. Her constant hysteria is something she never tolerated from her own toddlers, probably because she wanted to corner the market on it herself. But there is no reason for any 37 year old adult to act like this. I know the helpless thing is an act to cover laziness and demand attention. But really, she is very immature and childish. Any other 37 year old not living in an institution would be embarassed to act like this.

Ladies, my hubby said to remind you all of something very important! Now read this, please.

I know this is a blog about Kate Gosselin and I read through this but don't really post but read below for your own safety.

Be careful, do not be so quick to open your doors during this storm to stranger(s). You can yell "who is there, what can WE do for you, what is your problem" and do not open the door.

You can call 911 for them, your own police departemnt has a seperate #, Stranger(s) can yell out phone #s for you to call. You, if alone, can do nothing to help with a flat tire, flooded vehicle, someone trapped (not when you are alone, you cannot go out in this bad weather and do anything worthwhile) so you call #s for them.
You call a neighbor(s) but you do not volunteer your home to stranger(s) at this time, not even a woman and a child/children.

This is the time when criminals take advantage of people. They can knock on your door and walk in to rob you or worse. Be vigilant!

Keep Pam Spray, Bug Spray, Cleaning Spray near that door (nothing that would hurt you but would shock the stranger.

You can certainly have your opinions about this information, but remember this is a time to use your head and think. Be sure to call a neighbor or a church member, someone who knows you are alone and let them know you are there.

Sleep in your sweats, keep your sneakers, jacket, blanket, umbrella, tote bag with medication, small suitcase with a complete change of clothing, toothpast, toothbrush, copy of your home owner's insurance, listing of local hotels/motels,map of your area, necessities but not big bottles. You still have time to do this.
Be prepared to leave your home if necessary. Put those sweats together with socks, underwear to wear the next couple of days until this weather has passed. We all have too many prs of sweats, so get comfortable for this weather.

My hubby is brilliant and he taught me so much when he was deployed. BE CAREFUL, don't be the one to run out the door or open the door.

Not sure if Kate has a whole house back up system. For the price of the house you'd think so, but nothing was listed in the Trulia add. As far as Jon being in the house - I don't think Jon ever really lived in the house. I think he was more or less sent right to the garage apartment. So he probably wasn't mentally invested in the property to plan on a generator system. Maybe Kate is counting her refrigerator freezer (2) along w/ deep freezers as part of her 4 freezers. I agree - after a while, frozen food isn't that great. You can't beat fresh meat, steaks, etc., so you don't really want to keep a years worth of meat frozen.

Thank you for not becoming the other blog - they don't even discuss Kate anymore - they're just talking about THE STALKER.

***

Household maintenance is a man’s job, which he will inevitably do wrong because he doesn’t know how to help and is a MAN. “Masterminding” is a woman’s job, which must include screeching, belittling, and hand-flapping, preferably while perched on her white plastic throne.--The Gospel of Katie G, 8:88

Pants on Fire said...

I am uninformed concerning Jon's exact living situation (a rustic-type house in a very rural setting, I may have read???)----but whatever it is, my opinion is that, in light of a whopper of a storm probably on its way, the kids belong in "their" house (you know - the one that J&K bought just for the kids???).

If all are stranded for any amount of time due to the storm, I would think that the kids would be more comfortable in the big house where most of their belongings are located, as well as their "own" bedrooms.

I also think that Kate should invite Jon to come stay at the big house for the duration of the storm. Having Jon there would bring much comfort to the kids in a scary situation. Jon also could deal with ramifications of the storm, like power outages and the like.

When my boys were small, we had a flash flood storm here in the Twin Cities. The power went out and live lines were down everywhere. Water came gushing in my main level. I asked my ex to come stay with us, which he did. Never mind that we could not stand each other. You put those issues aside and do what is best for your kids.

Exactly where is Ohio? Just kidding. I was pretending to be KG. for a minute. :D

Gahh....it's gotten dark here and the wind's picking up. It's rained so much already here today that we already have puddles at the bottom of the driveway (and the "event" hasn't even happened yet)...........and the reports from the weather channel are just getting worse and worse. Direct hit anywhere from Delmarva peninsula to southern NJ....that's exactly where I am....right between the two...in northern DE.

Trying not to think about it. I hate that sound of a huge train barreling down on you that a hurricane makes. Son who lives not all that far from here (but on a different power grid) called just to check that we got the basic necessities. At the rate my hubby is eating all the provisions here, there's gonna be nothing left for me to eat if this is as bad and lasts as long as they're predicting.

I kept hoping and hoping it would go out to sea.....but the forecasts continue to just get more and more dire for this area. :(

Now that I'm thinking back....I think the reason I ended up taking all those nano-pets to work with me was because they decided that the kids were no longer allowed to bring them to school anymore.....so I ended up stuck with them at work all day. I can't even remember what happened at night...how did we all sleep at night if those darn things had to be fed and walked? I can't even remember now.

Just remember my co-workers laughing at me because I was doing virtual pet care during my breaks.

As usual, you miss the point, sheeple.

No one is misinformed that airplanes are safer than cars. That doesn't change whether people are afraid of them.

But many people are afraid of pit bulls because there is a lot of information that pit bulls are the most dangerous breed out there, and using that to justify that the kids are "unsafe" with this pit bull is a false premise.

If people were simply afraid of them while also knowing the facts, which, in fairness, some are, that's another thing. But you can't use it to justify that the kids are unsafe no more than I could use my fear of flying to justify that the kids are unsafe flying.

Have a super gr8t day!

Yea, back in Virginia, Richmond area! Heading north on I95 today, we passed at least 15 bucket trucks heading north, getting in position for after storm repairs I am sure. I talked to friends in Norfolk earlier, the city had some flooding and Hampton too, but nothing unexpected. People who expect to get flooded go to the shelters, and go home when the water recedes, or go stay with family or friends. You just get prepared like everyone has said, and if you have to go somewhere, do NOT drive on flooded roads. You can never tell if the road is washed out under the water. Stay home, read a book, eat pbj sandwiches. Everyone further north and esp on the coast, stay safe!

Any body living in hurricane areas and harsh winters for snow, etc. never wait for the last minute to gather up survival gear. I live 1 block from the bay and I always have pet food, litter, water and canned goods, crackers, etc. on hand. Of course batteries, flashlights and a little coleman camper stove. These are things all my neighbors do also. And....I never answer my door, day or night, without looking out the "peep hole". This town is very quiet but you still never know. I sure hope everybody is safe and that this storm will pass without too much damage. Stay safe...

carolina peach said...

Another suggestion for protection anytime is wasp spray. It shoots about 20 feet so you can deter someone without them getting too close. Gives you time to get to safety.

Get your prescriptions filled. Most drug stores will give you a partial prescription to make it through the next week or so since this is an emergency.

Check on your elderly neighbors.

IMPORTANT
After the storm has passed beware of "contractors" that drive up and offer to fix your roof, etc. Some will offier you a deal and even have the materials on the truck. The can even start today for a cash down payment. Don't do it. They will even say they did work for your neighbors and call them by name to gain your trust. Beware. We were even taken advantage of by a reputable tree service in our town after a hurricane. Greed got the best of him and we wonder how he lives with himself knowing how he took advantage of so many of us. We were desperate to get our home, yard, and lives back to normal. They prey on this.

We had a mega snow storm in 93. My husband, my ex now, and I had to go to the grocery store and didn't realize how bad it was going to be. We were standing in line at the Piggly Wiggly and we saw it was started snowing. But it was strange that morning, I called the propane company to tell them that I wanted to order some propane. I wrote the check and put it under the lid. When we got back from town, I checked the propane and he had put the propane in. I said ah no. Now I am going to have do without less money next week. By that night the temp was was 20 degrees below zero with a foot and a half of snow and a drift by our deck a couple of feet. We didn't have candles, batteries, matches, but we had heat. So we went to bed. The next morning, everything was crystal clear and was warming up. We had put all our refrigerator things into a cooler, put snow in it and put the milk jugs into the snow. My ex cooked bacon, scrambled eggs and toast on the grill and not to waste the charcoal, he put a package of hotdogs on the rack and completely closed the lid. They were done for lunch.

I think the kids are with Jon. On twitter, she didn't even mention the kids only once. And I believe her about thinking Jon's new GF is dirt, which is horrible. Also the meltdown she had about Stephanie babysitting is because she had a 2 year old baby at the time. You know that burned her up big time.

I found this on a blog from 2009 while researching something else. Interesting comment way back then from someone who supposedly helped them get their dogs.
Makes you wonder if the second Shoka maybe *was* a different dog.

I can't imagine the second owners giving up a dog they had already bonded with, especially not back to the original owner who not only rejected them, but was a dog-beater besides. Although for the right amount of money, anything is possible, I guess.

Is there anything in gosselinbook about this?

” Kates Sworn Enemy said…FYI – OK quick story about the dogs. They were brought on to make the show more family friendly. After 3-4 weeks they were shipped of to “training” camp. They were home for about 1 week and then shipped off to another home. The story is they were sent to a family who lived on a farm? [i know, i know] In coming episode or maybe next season there will be a tie in with one of the kids being allergic to the dogs and the family goes to visit the dogs at the new home. If that is even possible. From day one KK was miserable, unless she was on the couch talking about herself.

Go Army #85: What great advice...thank you. A few weeks ago my doorbell rang on a Sunday afternoon. My big black lab/shar pei mix went ballistic and I couldn't open the door, so I opened the garage door and walked out to talk to the two guys. They had an obvious con going, although well dressed. One did all the talking and the other said nothing. Two days later, I saw the one who said nothing on the news as one of the most-wanted men in the state for burglary, rape, and assault and battery. Thank gawd for my precious dog, who would give her life for me.

Geez that's frightening Judy. Kudos to your furry guardian angel.

A thousand years ago when I got my first apartment I bought a pair of men's big workboots from the Salvation Army and put them right inside the door for that very reason...as a deterrent. Thankfully I never had a scare like your's though.

For those with the storm. here are a couple of more hints..This is important if you are a well system. If you shut off the power or the gas to your hot water heater, you can drain the water for use. It will provide between 25 to 50 gallons of fresh drinking water. (think about it, that is the same water as your tap) Why turn off the power if the power is out. So it does not try to heat an empty tank when the power comes back on. You can make sure the water is filling the tank before you turn the power/gas back on.
The second is a gross but useful poem to help conserve water until power is back.
If it is yellow, let it mellow
If is is brown, flush it down.

That means you do not have to flush the toilet each time. Remember, you can even fill a trash can with water for the toilets. You aren't drinking it so any container that can hold water will work for toilets.

DH and I just got our concealed carry permits. We had to take a gun safety course which was taught by a police officer from a major US city.

His comment about answering the door to strangers = DON'T DO IT. JUST DON'T. There is nothing in the 'be polite and nice to strangers code' that says you have to answer your door.

Even if you have a door with a glass panel where they can see you are at home, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR!

We now do one of two things - we might walk to the front hall to see what they want, but we talk through the door. AND we always have the phone with us to dial 911. We also have a gun by the door within reach.

Or we may not even go to the door.

I was appalled by his warnings during the class but he made a few memorable points:

1) it will happen in seconds and if you are not prepared you will die - any bad guys who break into homes when owners are there have already decided they are going to kill you...

2) even suburbs are no longer safe as the bad guys target 'safe subdivisions' as their new playgrounds; they figure subdivision folks are fat, dumb, rich and clueless - easy pickings because they don't expect crime to come to 'their' door. He cited examples of bad guys from inner cities who cruise the suburbs to find areas with low crime and they are casing the area.

Those two well-dressed young men that come to your door are casing the place, determining how easy you'll be to rob. They may only be the advance team, but when they find a sweet white-haired old lady who is gullible, she's marked.

Sorry to tell you that by opening the garage door you are showing them your car, your toolbox, your lawnmower, etc. You'll never see them eyeballing things but they will be. And when your turn your back to go back into the house, they could follow you and ambush you in the privacy of your garage. This exact scenario os one the cop told us about.

Always keep something between you and the strangers. A closed, locked door is your first best defense.

The CPL course was an eye-opener. It cut away my last belief in the good in mankind, and has made me see life in a different way. I hate it. It's like losing your viginity. Once your naivte is gone, you'll never be Pollyanna again.

But hopefully, no one will kill me in my own home. I don't answer doors anymore unless I know the person. There is NOTHING anyone has to sell that I want to buy from a door-to-door salesperson.

I hate that life has gotten so weird. In my heart, I am a Mayberry kind of gal, and Pollyanna is my idol. Sad.

Capecodmomma, we have a Boston Twitter who is the sweetest friendliest thing - except to other female dogs! A neighbor has a big white shaggy dog that is like ten times the size of my Boston, and she is terrified of my little dog!
Years ago we had a put bull that we raised from a puppy. She was sweet, loyal, very obedient because we trained her, and she slept on the bed with us. Any dog treated badly can become vicious.
The Michael Vick case was unique that the dogs were not automatically euthanized. The federal judge ordered Vick to put a million dollars in a fund to be used to rehabilitate or provide care for the dogs. Some dogs had never fought and after evaporation and training became adoptable. Some of the fighting dogs could not be rehabilitated and will live out their lives at a sanctuary.
Michael Vick served his sentence and did everything the court required of him.

Kate needs to pack a bag and go to Steve's or an inland hotel. She is incapable of taking care of herself in the event of a weather emergency.

+++++++++++++++++++++

Steve is in the path of the storm. There's a state of emergency declared there as well. Look north, look south, look west...where would she go? She'd have to drive all the way to Ohio to get out of this one. They're predicting two feet or more of snow in the mountains west and south of her.

Kate thrives on this attention. She doesn't care how ridiculous and stupid she sounds. The drama queen will write a script how she braved 200 mph winds, no power for three weeks, walked 10 miles for gas for the generator and had then had to paddle a canoe through the streets to get to it. She still managed to bake 70 loaves of bread for 35 homeless families who stayed at her house during the storm.

And the sheeple will believe it. Milo will write a letter to the President asking for a special hero awards dinner to be held at The White House in Kate's honor.

I saw came upon two deer standing in the middle of a fairly well-traveled road tonight. I stopped and flashed my lights and they ran into the woods. Deer always seem to come out before a snow storm, so I guess they sensed the drop in pressure before this one. Not a good sign.

Another snippit learned:

Have you ever noticed that cops keep a distance from the door when they knock? They will knock then step back about 10-15 feet. They call it a zone of safety where they can draw their guns if someone rushes them.

They advised us to do the same thing if we go a-knocking on anyone's door. Knock, then step way back. You will look less threatening and will have a zone of safety around you.

Geez, I hated that class. It has made me paranoid. When I mentioned that during a one-on-one eval during the course the cop asked me, 'would you rather be paranoid or dead'?

Yep, that made me feel lots better, thanks... are those my only choices?... sigh....

I did, however, score 100% center ring shots at 15 and 20 feet on the range(shooting-across-bedroom distance). So I can shoot. But do I have the nerve.....

Pants on Fire said...

Thanks so much for your info. I copied and pasted it to my hubby in an email.

He IS Pollyanna. I've been warning him not to open the door to strangers, but he just shrugs me off, calling me paranoid. Maybe the same plea coming from somebody other than me will at least get his attention.

I personally never open the door to strangers - I don't give a damn what they think of me.

Got some updates from Outer Banks of NC. Friend who lives there texted us picture of Frisco Pier from this afternoon, it is severely damaged and big section fell into the ocean. Frisco is one of the villages on Hatteras Island, and the fishing pier is a landmark. Highway 12 south of Nags Head has been impassable all day, when the water recedes there may be another new inlet like last year with Irene. The area where or house is should be ok, it did not flood last year with Irene and sound flooding is not expected to be that bad. I feel really sorry for Julie from the Weather Channel who has been stuck in the awful weather at Nags Head all day and night!
My dishes are done, I have done two loads of clothes, and filled pitchers with water and tea. we are as ready as we can be. Hope everyone stays safe! And get put a good book to read.

As a culture, I think we are raised to be polite to strangers and the bad guys count on this.

Bad guys are different that you and me. They see politeness as weakness. The stories that cop told just curled our collective hair.

Here's another one - this WILL curl your hair - he said that in our class there were certain to be bad guys with no records who were 1) taking the class to learn shooting techniques, to learn the law so they could circumvent it, and to check out the stories told by the cop so they could avoid making the same stupid-bad-guy mistakes.

You should have seen all of us surreptitiously checking out our classmates during the two-day class to see who the bad guys might be. The second day a heavily tattooed guy came to class with long sleeves and a turtleneck. He could have been a church-going CPA with a wife and 8 kids, but we all 'knew' - ha ha. Poor guy....

How did the cop know this? He told us about bad guys who got caught doing a crime and they actually confessed they took CPL courses to gain knowledge. Regular shooting classes don't teach laws, at least in this area. The regular shooting classes are technique only classes.

And yes, when the bad guys got caught they lost their concealed carry permits.

Some of this safety stuff is simple common sense but crime is getting more and more sophisticated. The stories that cop told ....... chilling.

And that is the last I'm mentioning because I can already tell I'm going to have bad dreams tonight. Took me weeks to sleep peacefully and not hear someone breaking in at 3 AM. Shiver...

omg- scary stuff- we learned the same type of thing forward deployed- the enemy would 'test' us by planting a fake bomb near or on a base of ours and then watch our reaction to see how we conduct operations- Bad guys may be bad, but that doesnt mean they are stupid.
I happen to be a trusting person and I give people the benefit of the doubt- I am slowly learning to not be so naive. Thank you for your post- really, THANK YOU. I am adding it to my knowledge base. I think most people want to help each other, and bad guys use that against us. I, too, have a gun, and I will use it if necessary.
Here's my tip- I learned from the sheriff's in my area that a sticker in your window that says "gun owner" or something similar can sometimes turn you into a target instead of scaring potential thieves away, because they want to steal your fire arms.
I am glad everyone is sharing these tips- we can all learn from each other.

Anon 141,

I don't have any doubts if anyone breaks into my house. My life comes before theirs.

But I agree with your comment. It is on exactly on point.

If you hesitate the bad guy takes your gun away and uses it against you. If you hesitate he can shoot his gun first.

It's the forethinking that is unsettling. Talking tonight, I would really hate to have to shoot someone. And actually not for the reasons most people think.

It wouldn't bother me to shoot-to-stop someone who was intent on harming me or my family. I just hate the idea of what comes after the shooting. The police review, the inevitable lawsuits from family.... shooting someone even in justifiable self-defense opens a door to some inevitabilities that must be endured and they are not pleasant.

When I said 'did I have the nerve' I was speaking rhetorically and philosophically in advance. Folks with CPLs practice regularly with shooting instructors for different scenarios. It's not a take a class, get your permit thing. Having a CPL confers responsibilty to be and an informed and proficient shooter and requires regular practice at indoor and outdoor ranges and situational settings.

Owning a firearm is a huge responsibility not to be taken lightly. Not everyone likes guns. I don't particularly 'like guns' but they can be efficient when needed for life/death safety situations.

You may be assured I am not a weekend shooter, a silly white haired lady with a gun in her purse. DH and I are very well trained and knowlegable and practice monthly.

For me personally, I don't carry outside the home. I wanted the course for the expanded content and because DH was taking it.

I know guns can be as polarizing as religion and politics and it's not my intention to start a debate. I just wanted to reply to Anon 141 - I agree that if you can't use it, a gun can be detrimental to your own safety.

Good night- and good thoughts.

Buttefly,

YES! Our instructor told us the same thing about the firearms stickers for windows and doors.

The only thing it does is make the bad guys wonder what kind of guns you have; they fantisize how much they might get on the black market. Apparently the bad guys, according to this big city cop, think guns in suburban homes will be hand guns, small caliber, a mix of revolvers and semi-automatics. For the bigger guns and rifles they head to the country.

Butterfly, I agree with you that it's good to share information here. It's a learning site for sure.

Pants 145,

It is a huge decision to become a gun owner. I thought about it for several years before buying. Then we had an incident near where we live that prompted the move to ownership and training.

For years I just didn't want to believe that the world around me held such violence. And maybe it really doesn't. Maybe the incident was a fluke. I hope so.

And maybe we'll never be faced with the choice of using it to protect ourselves. I hope not. But we chose to be prepared.

There is no right or wrong choice. Each person has to dig deep to find what is right for them. It's like everything else in life, you have to choose what fits your lifestyle and philosophy.

Everyone us ready, and most schools around here have closed for Monday, also all the state government offices in Richmond have closed for tomorrow. poor Hatteras island has just been pounded relentlessly by the wind and rain all day. Not being on the east coast I've have not really been following news of the storm too closely. After all the posts here I took a look at the weather.com site - yowsers! It looks really bad doesn't it!

Anyone have any idea what this might do to the election voting? Has there been any speculation in the news about that?

Please don't lets make this a political debate - but I am just struck by the possible effects the storm might have... long term power outages, disrupted transportation systems...

Have there been, in the past, any natural disasters that came during election week? I can't think of any...

The final wisp of my thought is that severe weather is seemingly becoming more and more an issue. I don't remember so many storms, hurricanes, tornadoes as we've had in the past 5 years or so. I have to wonder if we're just having a 'bad spell' or if this is the effect of global warming? Scary.

We've got guns and know how to use them but we've also got a bully with a very loud menacing bark. Where I live most people have security doors rather than screen doors. You can leave your front door open with the security door locked. They're made of decorative iron work and look good and are really secure. No bugs can get in the house due to the way theyre made. My dog loves to lay in front of it to watch the world go by and bark at anyone who walks by the house. Due to "the barker" I think that "bad guys" would move on to the next house if they were casing the neighborhood. They don't want to mess with dogs.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I don't think it will have any bearing on the voting at all since all of the states that they are anticipating any damage are voting blue. Losing a few votes won't matter in a state like NY. The only thing it might affect is last minute campaigning in the states that are tighter because there will be pressure for both leaders to be visiting the disaster areas and campaigning can seem tacky when people are suffering.

Since it's timely, all PA voting records are public. Kate is, surprisingly, registered. She is registered Republican. Jon is also registered, he is registered Democrat.

Anonymous said...

Barkers and large dogs definitely scare bad guys away. They want easy in, easy out. They will move on to the next house where there isn't a dog.

One of our neighbors told a story once about his doberman - the dog went with him to the door, bared his teeth and growled, and the salesman said "never mind" and backed away quickly. Our neighbor didn't even have to say a word.

NJ gal, more and more folks in our area are getting those security doors too.

I am keeping all east coas folks in my thoughts. May you all be safe from harm during Hurricane Sandy. It sounds as if most are as prepared as possible.

On another tpic ~ being safe and choosing to have a gun. That is a personal decision. Myself, I choose not to own a gun. I am 50 and during my life, have been in a few scary situations. I got through by a combination good luck, use of a well placed kick to the privates, and a strong pair of lungs. None of those could be taken from me and turned against me, nor accidentally hurt or kill my child.

My advice ~don't waste precious life living in fear. Seriously. Most people are basically good, with a few really bad guys. Use common sense, listen to your gut and greet each day with positive energy, not fear and suspicion. If you choose to own guns, take every precaution. I knew a man (a neighbor) who thought he was shooting an intruder. It was his son sneaking in late. The son died and the man later took his own life. I've never forgotten that tragedy.

About , dogs protecting your property, that is a 50-50 thing. While it is true, most robbers, would pass up a house with dogs, these robbers do case the neighborhood first, to see what kind of dogs, people have. Small dogs are no problem, a good kick, puts them out, giving them food, also works. Larger dogs, depending on if a stranger can pet them or the dog barks at anyone, that house is a target. If the robbers are determine to rob your house they will, even alarm systems, don't phase them, cause most times people put the camera, high enough, that it can't be reach with a bat. or the wires for the alarm system can be seen, no senors on the windows. My police district and a neighboring one had a seminar on how to protect your house from getting broken into, and had some guys that were robbers, tell us how they pic a house, talk to owner, case the neighborhood, make note on how the dogs act, and what kind they are, look in your trash to see what you bought, even what type of air conditioner you have and how easy it is to push it in. Most robbers have the less than 5 min rule. It was very interesting and very info. Opened my eyes.

Maybe you should quit while you're ahead. Or behind. Now you're telling intelligent female posters that 'we' vote with 'our emotions'??

What on earth makes you think the female species is so ignorant? The stereotype of women being uneducated and barefoot and pregnant is long, long gone.

I'm mortified at your comments, truly mortified. Vote with my 'emotions' indeed. Wake up, it's 2012!

The only shit being stirred up here is from 1800's and by you.

I'm not normally this direct but I've got smoke coming out of my ears!

I'm kind of surprised no one has ever looked up Jon and Kate in the voter registration pool before, unless I missed it. But there they were.

But I take offense to your comment about the Republican Party, Anger Issues, which is why I don't allow political discussion on the issues like that. You know that's the rule and I don't understand why that was necessary. You do realize a lot of people here are Republican, right? My guess is that Kate, who was raised religious and conservative, doesn't know anything different than registering Republican. I doubt she understands what it stands for. On the contrary, I think her beliefs are actually directly in conflict with that party, as she seems to think government should pay her way. Any Republican would be horrified to read that letter she wrote begging for more money from the government for her "disabled" children. Actually, everyone should be horrified at what this woman has asked her government to pay for. This kind of thing brings parties together! lol.

My advice ~don't waste precious life living in fear. Seriously. Most people are basically good, with a few really bad guys.

&&&

I agree. I'm a huge believer in not living life worrying about what's around the corner. I really can't worry I'm going to get gang raped and murdered every time I open the door. So many crime shows and cop shows will convince you this is a dangerous, dangerous place to live, when that's just not the case most of the time. Doesn't mean I'm careless, I take reasonable precautions all the time, but if they really want to get me they'll find a way to do it. The danger will still be there whether I worry about it or not, so I chose not to worry about it or even think about it.

I wonder how many pit bulls, and dogs in general, have deterred horrible tragedies. It's well established that criminals are more likely to move on past a house with dogs, even if the dogs are small, because they cause too much noise and commotion. Yet another reason to enrich your life with a dog (a rescue, preferably!).

My exhusband treated me like I was a dumbed down 'girl' who let my emotions rule my life. I knew that wasn't true but I find it incredibly sad that OTHER WOMEN (I'm assuming anger issues is a woman) think this way about their gender.

I'm kind of shocked to read that comment about women not researching their political candidate and voting in reagrds to someone's appearance.

I have to agree, I found that very offensive. Women are not dumb creatures who can't think or make an informed opinion. Quite the opposite, actually. Maybe it's time to turn that boob tube off and open a book? It's never too late and I've read more lately than I ever have before. And I'm a more informed and stronger woman because of it.

Life's too short to live being afraid. This, I know. It's exhausting living with fear 24/7. Personally, I'd never own a weapon of any kind as I have a small child and sadly, accidents do happen.

I'd like to also add that I've gained tremendous respect and actually a little 'awe' from reading the posts from all you smart women. You all appear to be quite independent, rule the roost, and are forever open to learning new things. I hope to be as strong and quick witted as you all are. You've proven to be good role models, at least for me in my life's journey! Thank you for that.

anger issues, everyone puts their foot in their mouth once in a while. Just admit you weren't thinking before you hit post. I wouldn't want you to leave angry. I also don't think you meant to hurt anyone's feelings. It wasn't intentional, I don't think.

I'm pretty sure people would move in if you just said a simple sorry, wasn't thinking.

We all make mistakes. If I listed all of mine, we'd run out of room here! So don't be so proud as to admit making a mistake. Life's a learning process if we let it be. ok? :)

I was going to post a reply to anger issues but hit preview before I hit post. It's very easy to edit it all out at that point. Sometimes we all need to type it out to get it out of our system but we also need to sometimes edit before posting. I will say one thing though that kind of rubs me the wrong way....just because I own a purebred and not a rescue doesn't make me any less of a dog lover. When it comes to dogs and cats you like what you like and we are bulldog people. We go to responsible breeders. Yes I know there are bulldog rescue groups and we support them but we don't qualify to rescue or foster because we have a pool. Our bully is never out where we can't see him and never out if we're not home. OK my late night rant about owning a purebred is over and I'm going to bed.

NJGal51 said...

One last thing...we always get them neutered when they are old enough. We own bulldogs for love of the breed and not to breed.

Permanent Name #157 -

I am in Maryland. Our early voting sites opened Saturday, October 27th, and were to be open daily through November 1st. The state has closed all early voting sites for today due to the storm. There were LONG lines on Saturday, at least one early voting in Baltimore City had a line that was 5 hours long.

I took advantage of the early voting option - I had picked up DS #1 from college, and transported him back to our home county so he could vote. We were in line for about 20 minutes before we got to the check-in. I was very surprised by the line - DS and I took advantage of early voting for the primary last spring, and there was no line.

I have heard "what if the power is still off on election day?" mentioned on both local and national news. There is no real answer for what will happen, but the potential is there for extended outages along the east coast.

My power company told us (all of the customers) to expect the power to go out, and expect it to be off for an extended (7 - 10 days) period of time.

We did lose power for 5 days during/after Hurricane Irene last August. We did not lose power for the derecho this past summer.

If you do activities with your dog, like sports or herding, the majority of the time you MUST have a purebred. That's the way it is, like it or not. It is very hard to find competitions that allow mixed breeds. That's why me mum broke down and got us border collies and australian shepherds. We herd, do agility, frisbee, etc and we need to be pure breds in order to find venues in which to compete. Furthermore, I was reading in the Daily Mail that many breeds are in danger of extinction now. In England those include Corgis, the Queen's dogs. Adopt from a shelter if you want, but if you want to actually DO something, you need a purebred. BTW that is adopt, not rescue. The term rescue is used to make the people feel noble, but that's not what they are doing, unless they are snatching it out of traffic or something.

Dee3, I'm confused. From your comments it sounds like you don't have any food in your house. That's not good. Or did I miss something along the way?
-----------------------
Hehe.....what happened was that I intentionally didn't buy perishable items when I went grocery shopping...except for half and half for my coffee. I basically only bought non-perishables and we were using up what was in the fridge, anticipating power outages. I also didn't buy anything frozen so I could use the freezer space to freeze bags of water, as suggested here.

So hubby decided that I should get peanut butter, jelly, bread, those potato rolls (he likes), chips, etc. Those were supposed to be for when the power went out....but he's already eaten half the potato rolls and about half the chips I got. He's been eating the "power outage food" before the power outage. I will probably end up having to eat canned food cold/right out of the can and looting the Halloween candy....if he keeps this up.

This is what is so frustrating about weather events like this....they had been predicting the high winds to start last evening. They did start and the house was creaking, etc.....but they never got bad enough to knock down trees or knock out the power. I was so happy when I woke up and we still had power.......so checked the weather channel hoping something had radically changed....but nope, still headed right for us according to the reports. Right now here...it continues to rain but no high winds yet.

It HAS been raining here since yesterday am. and water is starting to accumulate in large puddles......but the winds remain relatively calm.
I think one of the most difficult things with this particular storm for me....is that you get all ready for a particular time-frame and it keeps getting pushed forward.

They showed NYC and all the mass transit stations are ghost-towns. I can kinda understand the whole reluctance to declare states of emergencies now because it costs a fortune to almost shut a city down for an entire day....but then if the storm doesn't hit that day.....it entails a huge financial cost. Apparently in NYC, it's related to storm surge and tides and there's a risk that even though the storm hasn't taken this westward turn yet and is still relatively far off the coast.....the 8 am. tide could potentially flood the underground mass transit.....but if it doesn't.....they will have potentially been shut down for an entire weekday for nothing....with huge financial losses involved. And similar scenarios happening in Philly with schools closed, NJ with state offices closed, etc. It's the whole timing issue that is so difficult.

So right now in DE....seems like the fact that a state of emergency was not declared turned out to be a good thing.....but it's only a little over 7 am.....so plenty of hours left in the day. But right now....all seems to be going on as usual here in DE....except for a lot of rain.

I'm just grateful we still have power.....but this prolonged "waiting in dread" thing is stressful. You almost start feeling like...oh, just get it over with already.

BTW, Kate (I know you read here). Your Hurricane Sandy Diary sucks. I'm in DC, witch.

And since we mentioned that we think the kids are with Jon (she was going to be out of town this weekend anyway) she has to make up a story about how all the kids are tucked into bed with Mady (the golden one) reading a bedtime story. I mean, this is totally unbelievable. I'm sorry, I am just so perplexed by this crazy person.

Did you plan to give out candy on Halloween? I had bought candy...but just enough....and had planned to wait and see what happened with the timing of the storm and how the weather panned-out to figure out if I should get more. Our sons are grown so it's just us and the dog....but we still give out candy to the trick-or-treaters every year....but every year, the number of kids seems to decrease. I think that our neighborhood has evolved into mainly folks like us whose kids grew up and now have their own families.

But...with the gradual decrease of the numbers of young children (who go out to trick-or-treat...it's difficult to figure out how much candy to buy every year. And now with this storm...makes it even more difficult. If it ends up raining on Wednesday, it could seriously decrease the numbers of kids going out for Halloween. And if we get hit really bad today and tomorrow and lots of trees go down and no power.....there may not even be a Halloween on Wednesday. In fact, on the news, I heard them mention postponing it until the week-end in some areas.

But...the good thing is that the stores still seemed to have plenty of candy left (this past week-end) and were even starting to mark it down....so I figure if I do end up going out on Wednesday am. to get more, I could likely get it at prices marked down significantly.
And....there's an excellent chance of me looting the candy I have here if the power goes out and stays out for a prolonged period of time.....hehe....and I may need to replace it altogether by the time Halloween actually gets here.

Koop, ITA! Mythomaniac to the max! She makes up her own reality. And what really gets me, here is a storm that is affecting so many, maybe tragically, and she makes it about herself with her DIARY! Outrageous!

Dee3 #194 -

I bought Halloween candy late last week, and I probably bought too much (trying to use coupons matched up to lowest prices - "buy 3" kind of thing). Our neighborhood is great about getting the word out if things change. My teens no longer trick or treat, but would not be adverse to extra snackage being around the house! And, even if it gets cancelled, I would make family sized treat bags to deliver (maybe even in my witch hat & blinking pumpkin earrings!) to our neighbors with little kiddos.

(and, ALAS, I will probably end up opening a bag for myself - chocolate is my favorite stress binge.)

TLC stinks #195 - A storm diary - can you see the look on any publisher's face when they open that package? She would never self publish, she would mail it off! The list of her lies that pops up here every so often could fill a book of Khate Fables...but I don't see a market for it.

Augggh! Ok weather channel, I understand more people live in NJ and NY and you're talking about what will happen. BUT sandy has devastated the Outer Banks of NC. We have flooding in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Poquoson, Hampton and the rural counties in Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck. High tide will be 9:30-10 am here, and many of the bridges may have to be closed. How about showing those Yankees what the storm has done already?
Its a slow moving lumbering storm, and if you are in low lying areas it will be a problem for you. Maybe not right this minute, but be aware of what's going on around you if the storm is moving your way. If you are in an area near tidal waters, find our when high tide is and stay off roads at that time.
Didn't RH document that many of Ms Kreider s tweets were lies? her lack of common sense, and known lack of awareness of the world around her, and inability to care for even a pet rock, makes the thought of a Hurricane Sandy Diary from Ms Kreider laughable.

Jo, Auntie Ann, and No ID: Thanks for the comments and for sharing all the invaluable, priceless information you gained from your classes No ID.

Yes, it was scary; and, yes, I was stupid to open the garage door. I also have glass panels in my front door, so they got to see my huge black dog, as well as hear her fierce barking.

I don't have white hair or look old and vulnerable, but your point was well made and noted, and you can be sure that I will never open any door to someone I don't know again.

After seeing the guy on the news, I immediately called the Police Department in the town searching for him. He was on the run, so I don't think I'm in harm's way. I am always very aware of goings on in this neighborhood but will be even more careful in the future.

Someone mentioned that con artists will refer to the neighbors down the street by name to lend credibility to their con and that's exactly what the guy doing the talking did. I immediately recognized it was a con, told them I was broke and couldn't help them and came inside. My actions were careless and mindless and could have produced a very different ending. I was lucky.

Thanks again for all the information and reminders. I have learned so much from this blog.

Not everyone feels the need to "actually DO something" with a dog. They get dogs to have loving companions, not to win competitions. By the tone of your post, you appear to be very anti-shelter and anti-rescue. The comment about "adopting" vs. "rescuing" was really uncalled for. If you walk into a high kill shelter and come out with an animal, you are rescuing it from death by adopting it. If you adopt from a rescue that pulls from shelters or takes in abandoned animals, you also are rescuing the animals because if there were no one willing to adopt the animals, they wouldn't be rescued in the first place.
