The Farmer's Wife: When a reality show tells a truly important story

This week: Part One

Realitytvkids.com will be organizing an official summer "book club" screening of The Farmer's Wife. Watch Part 1 this week, Part 2 the week of August 12, and Part 3 (link to come) the week of August 19 and discuss it as you go with all the interesting folks here.

The Farmer's Wife first aired on PBS in 1998, a three part documentary, which was in essence a reality show, following three years in the life of Nebraska farmer Darrel Buschkoetter, and his strong but tender-hearted wife Juanita, along with their three sweet young girls.

The Farmer's Wife is one of the few great reality shows to ever grace our small screens. The Farmer's Wife had it all: tough, sincere characters, and a compelling story of hard work and perseverance in small-town America. Heartbreak, struggle, a marriage on the rocks, and the hope to keep a vanishing tradition alive drives this story.

Filmaker David Sutherland originally intended to profile several farming families in Nebraska. However as the project progressed, he became captivated with Juanita's story, and revamped the entire project to focus on her. Said Sutherland"She spoke from her heart, and her love for her husband Darrel's dream touched me deeply."

In the first episode, Juanita reflects on the plans they used to have to have six children. However it turned out three were all they could afford. Although Darrel never said so, Juanita worried he longed for a boy. And yet, said Juanita, "Sometimes I'm almost relieved we don't have a boy ... I'd be scared if we had a boy, he'd be the same way, and I don't know what the future for farming is."

Juanita's soft-spoken candor, and love and dedication to her family and to the farm, was a beautiful character study.

Most reality television out there has been better suited for the dust bin. Most stories need not and often should not be shared. Reality T.V. should just go away, especially shows that feature unprotected children. But once in a great while, a story comes along that should be told. Juanita's story does just that, capturing a moment in time in the late 1990's where a way of life in middle America was fading away, never to be the same again. Sutherland's series is both heartbreakingly tragic and inexplicably beautiful. Enjoy.

Kate lives in the past, her glory days with 'her' film crew- but why is she trying to be someone 'new' with her hair, tan, clothing changes? I don't get where her head is...she wants things the same, for the tups not to 'age' for example so they will be cute again for a TV series, but why is she morphing herself?
People preferred the old Kate on the early shows more...

But the old Kate had Jon with her. It was BOTH of them that made the show. The dynamics between them was the draw. She was a "normal" looking mom. Viewers could relate to that.

When he left, she had to figure out some way to not only keep viewers, but to bring in more, and if that meant morphing herself, that's what she did. She thought she'd have viewers tune in to see how she looked, what she'd be wearing, what she would do to her hair. When that wasn't working, she carried it to extremes. There was no going back to the old Kate because Jon wasn't there to carry her. The only thing she had left was to sell herself as some mutated Barbie. That didn't work either, and what you see is what you get.

Just my theory, for what it's worth!

Auntie Ann, 195 -- you described the classic farmer's wife very well.

My Grandmother was just that woman. Someone joked once that if she could figure out how to can walnuts in the shell she would have preserved them. She milked the cow, carried the stainless pail to the back kitchen, skimmed the cream and then churned the butter. She was very fond of her flock of chickens. I remember being less than 6-years-old and tripping behind her. She always kept a cookie in her apron pocket for me.

Mt Grandfather did not need a hired hand on their small farm. He had a whirlwind of a woman.

My new profile photo is my paternal Grandpa and Grandma ... people long gone from this landscape.

Grandma had one child -- a son, my dad. The first time he left the farm and the state was to go off to the Air Force and WW 2.

While stationed in New York for basic training he met a city girl at a USO function. They corresponded during his overseas years. Long romance story made short, they married and my mother considered herself a "war bride" because she moved from Long Island to Indiana.

My mother had watched the movie, "The Egg and I" with Fred McMurry and Claudette Colbert one too many times. She thought she knew what farm living would be like. Something "romantic" and charming.

My Grandmother never accepted this cosmopolitan young woman who arrived at the farm wearing heels and a fake fur leopard coat. Theirs was a contentious relationship.

My Grandmother gave up on trying to teach my mother any agricultural skills. My mom never became used to bugs or dust or my dad wearing a cap in the house. My parents were married 60 years, and my mother never reconciled herself to living on a farm!

Mom raised 5 daughters with a bit more stamina in their blood. 3 of us are married to farmers.

Hell NO. Some things are private.

AuntieAnn said...

Dmasy - Now I'm hoping TCM shows The Egg and I. I don't recall every seeing that movie.

What a lovely story, told by a wonderful story teller, I might add. Some women are not cut out for life on a farm and others adapt to it as if they've lived on one all their lives. I can see now why you were able to transform tons and tons of brick into a work of art in your yard. Hard work is an inherent attribute of farmers' kids.

My parents both came from generation farmers but were forced to quit farming shortly after they were married. Neither of them ever got used to urban living. I went kicking and screaming onto the farm I lived at but after living there for a few years, it was so hard to leave. I'd go back in a minute if I had the chance.

The photo of your grandparents looks similar to so many from the photographs in my grandmother's album. People always seemed to gather outside with Rover, in front of the shiplap siding of their houses to have their picture taken.

Mama Mia -- even if the litigants pay court costs in a civil suit, there's still the cost of lighting and heating (or cooling) the courtroom. Courtrooms need to be cleaned. The judge's time is being spent on the case while other cases, maybe more important ones, wait. Court clerks, stenos, bailiffs, etc. have to be paid. Where do you think their salaries come from? Tax dollars! The fees/etc. paid by the parties involved in a court case don't begin to cover the actual costs. At least not in the US. I IDK about Canada.

Yes, Readerlady, you are right, it is very expensive to heat, cool, staff and clean courtrooms and if you subscribe to the theory that this makes the tax payer fund civil matters, you should then be outraged that Miss Lafair wasted the court's time and resources hearing her matter, deciding in her favour, and then having her toss the judgement aside by dropping her claim against Miss Gosselin. The whole exercise wasted the court's time and the tax payers money. Shame on her.

Once A Viewer, Juanita said she practices birth control, Catholics don't, she said they wanted 6 kids but felt they could only afford 3, that goes against the teachings of piety and having faith God will provide (Kate loves that one, lol), and she is remarried which again is next to impossible given Catholics have to have their marriages annulled very hard to do when 3 kids are involved and both are of the faith. Finally Abby made the Dean's list of a Presbyterian school, Catholic children don't attend Protestant schools.

************************

You'd think TLC would have taken a note from "Roseanne" -- the show was great (and high in ratings) until the story line shifted to the family winning the lottery. They became completely unrelatable (as well as uninteresting and un-funny), and the show tanked.

Mama Mia -- I'm Catholic and I attended a Lutheran university. Several of my dorm mates/classmates/friends there were also Catholic. Catholics can remarry after divorce, but if they do so without annullment, they are barred from the Sacraments. Many Catholic women practice birth control despite the Church's teachings.

I'm not outraged at all about Ms. LaFair's decision to drop the case when KK appealed it. She won a moral victory, if not a monetary one. She showed KK up for what she really is, and she decided that her own sanity wasn't worth battling further in a case that would probably wind up costing her more than she won.

I haven't seen "The Egg and I" in years. I'm going to have to check Netflix to see if they have it, or perhaps my library does. For those of you who grew up bookworms, or who have kids who read a lot, Betty MacDonald also wrote those delightful Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books for kids. Her sister, Mary Bard, wrote the "Best Friends" books.

I don't get this at all. LaFair was owed ten thousand dollars by KATE. My outrage is toward Kate for not paying it. Had she settled up like Jon did LaFair never would have sued in the first place.

Further, LaFair WON her suit. But Kate couldn't accept that and chose to appeal. Again, that's Kate who can't just accept that she lost and pay up. ALthough you always have a right to appeal, every day people chose to just accept defeat and move on and not drag it on forever. Kate is not one of those.

My only outrage is toward Kate, not someone who had every darn right to sue to get HER money.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

I have questions about this. Which one is north and which one is south? I mean, i would ASSUME that Bird In The Hand is a prelude on the way to Intercourse. I guess it depends on your starting point and your ultimate destination. And how EAGER you are to get directly to the Rumspringa! If you go straight to Intercourse and cant get your Rumspringa there and have to continue on to Bird In The Hand, I would again ASSUME that Intercourse was seriously lacking in what you faithfully required.

So I am picturing Kate and her purse handler on a Rumspringa jaunt.Back seat of the torn limo. Steve wants a quick pit stop at Intercourse and Kate, clapping her hands and slapping her booby guard, requires that he have a COUPON, properly wrapped in foil, for Intercourse Rumspringin'. Steve digs through his wallet and cant find any coupons at all - Dang that Gina, she deliberately cleaned him out! He even checks the men's room for a coupon machine, none to be had, so to speak. So Kate, flipflapping her hand at him, tells Steve that without a nice foil sealed coupon (plus a carton of handiwipes) there will be NO Rumspringin, or Rumpzinging, in Intercourse. She sends the limo driver on, they arrive in Bird In The Hand, where Kate twits on her phone while Steve tends to some personal Rumspringin' over there in the corner. No coupon needed for a party of one, and he is ready to carry Her Majesty's purse again in about 90 seconds flat. Kate likes em fast, dontcha know, coz she is much too busy and exhausted for some stupid man to dwell too much on his personal Rumspringin'. So Steve changes into a matchy matchy shirt like all the OTHER cool 7th graders, after lathering up with a full bottle of hand sanitizer that is, because Kate is too cheap to allow actual soap and water to be used in her presence.

While in the Rumspringa gift shop, Kate sees grow-a-sponge-boyfriend and demands that Steve grift one for her from the shop owners. Steve Rumspringa's Kate right onto her flat ass, and tells Her Freakness she can kiss his Bird In The Hand and here's the map, since she probably doesnt remember where it even is at this point.

As he flops away in search of some decent Rumspringa somewhere else, Kate-on-Her-Ass bellows after him that he is jest jellus because she has a nice foil wrapped coupon from a men's room vending machine and he doesnt. And she is gonna sell it to Milo in exchange for $37,000 in Rumspringa and cash.

Of course, *I* Dwindle, ASSUME that would ONLY be in Bird In The Hand, not in Intercourse, but then again I dont know Kate's sense of direction when it comes to Rumspringa. Or Rumpzingin'. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I already addressed this.

It doesn't matter to me if Juanita is protestant and the girls are, it's all Christian. Lots of spouses will go to their husband's church as Juanita did. When they divorce, she moved and I assume maybe she went back to the church she grew up with. It's not necessarily an "F-U" to Darrel at all. I got the sense the family really cared first and foremost about teaching the children about God, not what denomination you are, or at least that's secondary.

LOL, Dwindle! It's Bird-in-Hand, not Bird in the Hand. Coming from Lancaster, you would first travel east through Bird-in-Hand, then arrive at Rumspringa Brewery on the right, and then get to Intercourse where you can buy some over-priced touristy stuff and lovely quilts. Coming from Philadelphia, you hit Intercourse first (on Route 340 West), then the Brewery, but never get to Bird-in-Hand, which is a shame because they have some great home-made pie.

Actually to take it a bit further, shame on anyone who doesn't go all the way to get the money they are owed, even a lawsuit, as long as they are truly owed that.

I can't stand people that take advantage of small business owners just trying to get paid. They are the backbone of this country. Would you walk out of a restaurant or grocery store without paying? If everyone knew if they didn't pay they would be hauled into court, people might actually pay for services rendered.

Catholics are allowed to practice abstinence are they not? Heck how do we know they weren't doing that, they were both working so darn hard there probably wasn't time for much else anyway. It's really not our business anyway. This series was not about religion.

RuhRoh.

Taxpayers pay for upkeep on the Courthouse and court room, the parking lot, the paper supplies and computers that they judges, their staff and the other staff needed to operate the system. They pay the judge's salary, the clerk's salary, the wages of the security and sherrifs. Where I live, jurors if needed, no longer recieve any daily stipend at all. Taxpayers do NOT fund the lawyers in a private suit like this, nor do taxpayers pay filing fees, paperwork costs etc. THAT is on the litigants. In some cases the party who LOSES the suit is ordered to pay 'court costs', but this is just a small dent in the ongoing costs of the justice system and in no way completely reimburses the taxpayers 100% for ALL of the costs involved of hearing the private case.

What is the difference between shop lifting and not paying for services, I mean how could the sheeple or anyone else for that matter excuse it morally? In either case the person is taking something and not paying for it. In my book it is theft pure and simple. Unless there was a prior agreement in writing it should be understood that Sylvia expected to be paid for her services.

Regarding Catholics and remarriage. If you are not married in the church the first time it is not recognized. even if you have children and you can remarry in a Catholic church. If you are married in the church the first time you can remarry but not in the Catholic church. It does not matter what your religion is when attending college. As long as you meet the qualifications you can not be turned away for your beliefs. It is against the law for that reason. Birth control is also widely practiced. We Catholics are really not that anal retentive.

Rarely comment, have been reading for years. I finally looked at the Coffee Mate picture. Unless I missed something, that is not Kate's BBB. All cars registered in the state of PA have an inspection sticker on the driver's side, bottom corner of the windshield. If her county also does emission testing, then there would be two stickers in that corner. She's driving someone else's car and it's not from PA.

Also had a thought on the supposed dating show of Kate's. After googling it, the only thing I was actually finding was she is pushing a show and trying to find a network to pick it up. Shouldn't you have a pilot or demo reel to send to different networks as a promo of your work? She should be showing them how she would meet, interview, pursue this future mate. So my question is, who played the guinea pig in this pilot and why isn't someone talking? Probably because it only happened in her head and she has nothing to show.

You're right! I was so busy looking at where she was parked that I missed that. There would be two stickers in that lower corner of the windshield. Berks County requires emissions inspections, but isn't there something like a diesel exemption for emissions? I don't have a diesel vehicle, so I'm not sure. Nevertheless, there should be an inspection sticker there.

Where I live "theft of services" would be like
hacking into my neighbor's cable service to have cable TV in my house. A man I knew used to put tin foil on his indoor tv antenna to get free HBO. Have no idea how that worked and I don't want to know. Anyway, he didn't want me to tell anyone because he knew that was theft of services. I had a neighbor who filled up his swimming pool from my outdoor spigot when I was visiting my dying mother. That was theft of services, according to the utilities department. They took care of it for me, so I didn't have to mess with any of it.

It might also include tapping into somebody's paid internet service, but I'm not sure about that.

Anyway, if you are getting the service, you have to pay for it yourself and not help yourself to it wherever you find it.

Regarding religious affiliation and choice of school: I am a recovering-Catholic who taught at a Lutheran University. My belief system or religious affiliation (or lack thereof, in my case) was never even questioned. One doesn’t need to be a member of a particular religion in order to attend or teach at any religion’s schools. I’ve known Jewish kids who have attended Catholic schools simply because the parents liked the structure and discipline. My Methodist husband attended a Catholic University (solely due to their stellar engineering program). Heck, my twins attend a Baptist preschool, and I’m not affiliated with any organized religion. [Note: I do expect lightening to strike me every time I walk them into the building – translation: Catholic guilt has a lifetime warranty].

I must take issue with Foxy (73)’s comment that “Birth control is also widely practiced. We Catholics are really not that anal retentive.” With all due respect, if you’re Catholic and you use birth control, you are going against your Church’s teachings, and you are a hypocrite. No offense intended, but I’m sorry, I’m tired of people “cherry-picking” the tenets of their religions that they will or will not follow. I’ll grant that being a “true” Catholic is damn near impossible in this day and age. We’d be smiting our neighbors left and right, which the Bible might be okay with, but local law enforcement would likely frown upon. Which is why I am no longer a Catholic. I can’t, in good conscience, follow an organization that preaches intolerance toward homosexuals, treats women like second-class citizens, and refuses to crack down on priest-related child molestation. In addition, the unrealistic demand of celibacy of their priests strikes me as completely unnatural. Sorry for the rant, Admin, as I know it’s veering way off topic and into dangerous debating – but I just think people are far too cavalier about their religions and institutions of worship. If you’re aligning yourself with a particular religion, then freaking follow their beliefs. It’s not up to you to decide which ones fit with your lifestyle or whims. Religions are not smorgasbords from which you can choose the dishes that are most appealing to you. What’s more, if you find your religion’s beliefs to be unrealistically restrictive, discriminatory, or just downright anachronistic, then perhaps you should reconsider your allegiance.

Luckily I don’t eat meat, or you’d all get an earful on why I don’t get why Catholics can’t eat meat on Fridays during Lent…..

Yes, schools will pick and choose based on their preferences, but my point was that one doesn't HAVE to belong to a particular religion in order to teach at a particular school. By the way, any school who rejects a teacher based upon his/her religion is opening up the opportunity for a nice, fat law suit.

I loved Juanita's personality. She was a lovely woman and an incredible parent to her 3 daughters. So patient, kind and loving. Darrel was an insecure man who was never nurtured properly by his parents. I learned how important it is for a child to hear their parent say how proud they are of them. A simple request with positive lifelong consequences. All kids want is to hear their parent say, good job, I am proud of you!

If you’re referring to the Catholic Church's prescribed “rhythm method,” then yes, that along with abstinence is a Catholic-approved birth control method. Unfortunately, the rhythm method is unpredictable and unreliable. Do you really think most Catholics aren’t using the pill or condoms???? The only fail-safe, Catholic-approved method of birth control is abstinence. How many practicing Catholics do you really think are relying on THAT method?? Don’t tell me that you’re that naïve.

Not to beat a topic to death, but I have to post one more thought: The Catholic Church (Bible) preaches that you should be fruitful and multiply. The Bible doesn't preach birth control. On the contrary, it demands that women "submit" to their husbands. How many of us know good, Catholic woman who have had their uteruses worn thin because of this edict????? The only “outs” are monitoring your cycle and abstinence. Good luck on the latter, when you’ve got a husband with “needs.” And good luck on the former when women’s cycles are so damn unpredictable. In reality, however, I’d bet dollar to donuts that most modern Catholics either use condoms or are on the pill. Really, who in this day and age would rely on something as archaic as the rhythm method???? Foxy??

The issue is that it isn't the FLOCKS choice to update the rules -- it's the Church's. Some of you seem to think you can change the rules to accommodate your lifestyle. That's not how religion works. If you subscribe to a religion, you follow its rules. Period. Unless the church is updating its beliefs, you're still stuck in the stone age if you call yourself a Catholic. You don't get a say in things, hon. It's all about the Pope and Vatican City. Enjoy.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

What is the birth control thing based on anyway, just the "be fruitful and multiply" thing? Does it say be fruitful and multiply times 1,000 or are one or two kids okay. Also wasn't the context of that starting to populate the earth so haven't we fulfilled that call now and can ease up? I would think so.

I don't have a problem rejecting a church teaching like that when it's not even really based on anything concrete. The church is always evolving and changing their stance on things anyway, mine just did on gay pastors. You can't keep up. You'd have to live like a pilgrim to be able to aptly follow everything.

I noticed that the coffeemate is fat free. Often when a product is fat free it contains more sugar. The extra sugar and caffeine most likely gives her a surge of energy, but then she will plummet later in the day which is why she is always so exhausted. From what I've seen her die is very unhealthy.
-----------
From Kate's website.....
what I'm Eating
"...I also drink 1-2 cups of coffee with about 1/3 cup total fat free coffeemate"

Fat-free Coffeemate is 25 calories per tbsp--around 130 calories for 1/3 cup per each cup of coffee.

INGREDIENTS: Water, Corn Syrup Solids, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, and/or Cottonseed Oil, (Adds a Trivial Amount of Fat), and Less Than 2% of Sugar, Modified Cornstarch, Dipotassium Phosphate, Sodium Caseinate, (Milk Derivative), Not a Source of Lactose Color Added, Artificial Flavor, Mono And Diglycerides, Polysorbate 60, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Carrageenan, Salt, Betacarotene. Color.

Half-and-half has 20 calories per tablespoon, or around 110 calories per each cup of coffee.

INGREDIENTS: Milk, cream

Need I say more? Someone who drinks up to 260 empty calories made up of corn syrup solids, hydrogenated oil, cornstarch and chemicals can't understand why the world won't recognize her as a role model for health and fitness? Maybe this will give you a clue...

I own a small service business, and, yes, theft of service is the correct term. In my state, it is a civil matter, not a criminal. If there is a signed contract, a collection agency can be used--however, the agency keeps 50% of what is recovered.

Midnight Madness,

I second your comment about this not being a forum to call out or criticize someone's religion.

I had typed out a long post about my feelings about Griftopia's post, then thought better of posting it.

Politics, religion, taxes and abortion are such hot-button issues and I think no purpose can be served on this blog to discuss them. The old saying applies: "this can't end well".....

JMHO.....

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I've noticed people more or less avoid discussing politics here. Even though there's a lot going on with the upcoming elections. I'm thinking you people are wiser than me. :) Of course that's not to say you can't talk about what you want, I just find it interesting the subject doesn't shift that way.

The hot button issues I mentioned usually garner a few well thought out comments, some good debate and some radical, inflammatory slams, or even some quiet backhanded slams.

I don't know whether folks just forget themselves and their manners and reason, or if they truly feel flamingly passionate.

As I said, things don't usually end well.

When the times apply, I have typed out a 'reasonable-to-me' post, but while proofreading it a little voice goes off in my head "don't send it, don't send it, don't send it".......

I consider myself a bit of an outlier, being an atheist with Buddhist leanings. It's the Buddhist teachings that have helped me understand that my opinion is rarely necessary to others.

I hear Spock saying to me "is it logical to post this?"

And then, of course, the old busybody Ms. Manners pipes in...... and by that time I usually am muttering 'oh shit, no one wants to hear your opinion anyway... the world won't stop, the sun won't fail to rise' if you keep quiet.

And then I withdraw into the peace that is me.

For the most part, this blog is an educational, entertaining place to visit with smart kind women.

2. The ORIGINAL TLC - the outdoor drama The Lost Colony, premiered on Roanoke Island on July 4, 1937. This year marks the 75th season of this historic drama that tells the history of the English colony on Roanoke Island that disappeared, and what their fate might have been. Go to their Facebook page and take a virtual backstage tour.
3. Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World, was born August 18, 1587. This will be the 425th anniversary of her birth. The first season of The Lost Colony commemorated the 350th anniversary of her birth. Imagine what it would be like to sail in a small crowded ship to an unknown land and have a baby with no medical intervention at the conception or the delivery!
4 since Andy Griffith lived on Roanoke Island, starred in the play for several years, and even in retirement liked to sneak in backstage and sing in the chorus, and he lived and is buried on his farm on Roanoke Island, reminiscences about your favorite Andy Griffith TV episodes are welcome.
5. Is there something else we are supposed to mark an anniversary for? I forget, must not be important.
Password is definitely BON APPETITE!

I don't have a problem rejecting a church teaching like that when it's not even really based on anything concrete. The church is always evolving and changing their stance on things anyway, mine just did on gay pastors. You can't keep up. You'd have to live like a pilgrim to be able to aptly follow everything.

There is a really funny, interesting book by a humorist A.J. Jacobs, called The Year of Living Biblically, who tries to literally obey the Bible for a full year.

This is an excerpt from a review at Amazon: "Raised in a secular family but increasingly interested in the relevance of faith in our modern world, A.J. Jacobs decides to dive in headfirst and attempt to obey the Bible as literally as possible for one full year. He vows to follow the Ten Commandments. To be fruitful and multiply. To love his neighbor. But also to obey the hundreds of less publicized rules: to avoid wearing clothes made of mixed fibers; to play a ten-string harp; to stone adulterers.

The resulting spiritual journey is at once funny and profound, reverent and irreverent, personal and universal and will make you see history's most influential book with new eyes."

Just FYI in case anyone is interested.

Happy Sunday morning to everyone. Our uncommon weather continues. We are having very cool nights. Sleeping with the windows open. The outdoors feels and looks like Autumn in August. It has been a strange year.

Good morning Dmasy! This cooler weather has been wonderful, hasn't it? Unfortunately it looks like it will heat back up just in time for my kids and I to go back to school. Their schools have A/C, but I have an upstairs classroom in an old building with no A/C.
We skipped church today because we all have colds. Stuffed up heads and sore throats in August?!? Boo!

Good Morning! It is beautiful here in Lancaster County - we have the windows open for the first time in months. The poor overworked AC is having a break!

My husband loves a good draft beer when we go out but when we're home it's PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon). He's in.

*Warning: the following post contains a religious viewpoint that may not be the same as yours. It's my experience, my journey for what it's worth.

Permanent Name,

Thanks for sharing that! Not to disagree with Buddha, but I appreciate and value your opinion. :) I believe a person's beliefs, when they have been well thought out, deserve respect. I have never been one to blindly follow religious teachings, and that is actually how I ended up becoming a Christian! Being an atheist or agnostic were attractive options for me, but there were so many things I couldn't resolve. God either exists or he doesn't - he can't be real for some people and not real for others. Believing one way or the other doesn't make it so . . . Anyway, after lots of consideration, here I am a "born again" Christian and my life has been the better for it.
As C.S. Lewis said, if I'm wrong then when I die it won't make any difference at all. If I'm right, it will make all the difference in the world.

May I enter the discussion of religion and rules? I am Presbyterian, and our motto is Reformed Church Always Reforming, so our rules change fairly often. It is good news sometimes and bad news other times, depending on your perspective.

The reason there are so many religions is because none of them is a good fit for everyone.
The Disciples of Christ broke from the Presbyterian Church in the 1800's because they did not agree with using the Apostles' Creed, believed in baptism my immersion at an age of reason and believed Communion should be celebrated every Sabbath. People leave churches all the time over issues large and small. Others hang on for dear life, sticking with their church no matter what.

Within a specific denomination there will be differences of opinion. Some members are rule abiders and some are not. Whether you follow the rules or not is a matter of polity (governance) instead of faith. Because I believe a certain rule of the church is good does not make me a better Christian. It makes me a better church member. Because I believe a certain rule of the church is flawed does not make me a worse Christian. It makes me a person who still loves God but isn't in love with that rule of the church.

The Bible tells us the rules. Love God, love your neighbor. If you can do that you have fulfilled all that the law and prophets have taught. Everything else is commentary.

The timeline and tweets of this whole thing is insanely funny. She's seen at Denny's at 6 a.m. this morning in NC and is tweeting she's home at 10:30. Not possible. Not even with wings on her car. Then she's seen on a ship in Ft. Lauderdale this afternoon. Not possible. Not if she left NC this morning. She wouldn't get there before 7 p.m.

If the siting at Dennys was yesterday, then all of this would be possible. But why is she tweeting that she's at home, sweet home if she's on the cruise? Why would she lie?

Thanks for all the "shout-outs". I refuse to be duped again by any reality program. They are scripted and they are all smiling on their way to the bank. The Gosselin fiasco ruined it for me, but also opened my eyes wide enough to see the truth about so many other programs. Just not interested or interesting. Not on my tv!

Those 3 little girls on FW sure east ange, huh? When Juanita left for a few days, they didn't want hear anything about he tip--they wanted to show her what they were doing.

I hope that some of Kate's loverz are watching along with us because a picture IS worth a thousand words. This is how all childen are--their world revolves around themselves, not their self-obsessed mother! Don't take my word for it, watch it for yourselves...(link to follow in my next post.

I wonder if that's their nanny. They have one named Hannah.

Where is that person arguing about Kate's freebies?

See this is what we mean. She can't take one Lorax shirt, she takes enough for all the kids. She gets a SHIPMENT of pop chips according to the tweet, not just one bag. She took guac and nail polish too.

Whatever happened to our moms teaching us when someone offers you a plate of cookies, the classy thing to do is just take one? Kate can't just take one like a polite person, she wants it all.

I am the uploader of The Farmer's Wife on youtube and I have another farming documentary you will like called The Real Dirt on Farmer John. Do you remember this from a few years back on Independent Lens?

The guy featured in that documentary has a youtube page and still runs his organic farm in Northern Illinois. Unfortunately I can't find the entire documentary on youtube. I may upload it myself if youtube will let me.
