One of America's first sets of famous multiples said no to freebies

No they did not do it, too: Reflecting back on their childhoods, Baltimore's famous Henn quads, born in 1947, say the family didn't want to forever live off the generosity of others.  Their dad "turned all that down, because we just want to be a normal family."

Yet another family in Kate's shoes is going on record saying they wanted something different for their multiples. (Other families have also shunned Kate's choices, including the Headricks.)

In 1947, three boys and one girl were born to a young World War II vet and his British wife who had recently made their home together in the United States. Hard to believe today, but the public was just as curious about the four babies as the much higher-order multiples that made news decades later.

Publicity and freebies naturally followed, but Dad Charles only accepted a few select offerings and instead worked two jobs to support the family. He taught the children "if you want something, find a way to work and pay for it. That's the way we were brought up."

The Henn family in 2000.
As for the Gosselins, the quads say it's all about the money: "You know, I think they're after the money, versus we at the time didn't care about that. We just wanted to be normal."

The children went on to be just that, normal, well-adjusted adults with successful careers, including real estate, teaching, photography and serving in Vietnam. The only girl, Joan, even coached the University of Arkansas women's basketball and then helped special needs children until her death from cancer in 2000.

Good job, Mr. and Mrs. Henn.

Kate works at least 2 jobs, according to her. She types a little bit, pushes Send, and pokes at her phone to ask someone, anyone, to send her something fabulous that she wants very badly. That's hard work when you do it 7 days a week, 8 hours a day. Why, it will wear a person out, it will.

I bet Mr. Henn wasn't nearly as savvy as our li'l Katie. He probably just sold insurance and
ran a mill or something. How sad he never learned how to do it the Gosselin way.

Coming from Canada I have to say the reason I am so against the 8's exploitation is because as a young one I knew I had a right to privacy. Maybe because I am fremch...but at age 45..I grew up knowing we children should be protected..and we pass that on.

Example: My dd at age 10 was in the ruelle.
(nice bak alley with people on balconies watching)

Anyhoo..some guy on a bike stopped beside her, took out a camera and tried to take her picture

She immidiatedly pulled a full hand in front of her face and yelled u don't have the right to take my picture..
2 neighbours cornered him and asked him why he eas taking pix of young children.

Long story short..we.
or atleast my family teach our kids to be private ..Dionne influence? This blog makes me thinl so...think I will poll neigjbouts.

Ok..taking my soap box away...for now..lol

I wonder what kind of futures the G kids will have, What kind of adult relationships, jobs, etc. For any boy, the first female influence you have in your life is his mother. By watching her a son would learn how a woman is supposed to treat you, what is expected of you in a relationship, etc. What kind of women will J,C, and A marry? Women just like Grifty who will berate them at every turn? I hope they get lots of psychological therapy. Lord knows, they'll need it.

I think the girls will grow up with serious body image issues, and maybe some eating disorders. The sense of entitlement that Grifty has instilled in them will carry into adulthood, which will be a big slap in the face when they get to the real world.

Think of most of the child stars who have had difficulties as adults - Leif Garret, the cast of Different Strokes, the kid from the 6th sense was popped for a DUI. Problems with the law, drug problems, prison time, divorce, and sadly, suicide.

It saddens me that Grifty seems not to care. All she wants if fame for HERSELF. SHE wants a talkshow. SHE wants a dating show, in which she can get away from the ATMs for weeks at a time. SHE wants the crew back. SHE wants free stuff. What lesson is she teaching the kids? That the boys are alwasy icky and their hands are dirty (look at the face one boy gace when he was excluded from helping with the flag pie at the beach.) That is a nanosecond of what goes on 24 hours a day at that prison known as the Gosselin home.

Time marches on, and soon the kids will be grown and off to college, if there is any money left in the Grifty Hooker Shoe Account, sorry.... I meant college fund. If she doesn't lose the house to foreclosure, Grifty will be all alone in that big house, day after day. The kids will be glad to be free and never want to come back. What will she do? One person living in a hge house with all the upkeep for not just the house but the land. What happens when there is a Nor'Easter and she is trapped in the house with 3 feet of snow outside. With nobody to shovel the long driveway so she can run out to Starbucks and Target? Most people, when the kids are grown, downsize. Grifty will hold onto that house by her fake fingernails until her last breath. Anyone see the movie Grey Gardens? Its a'comin Grifty, give it time.

Thank you God for my mediocre life.

I'm the one who posted the link to this article yesterday.

I just called my mother, who has lived around Baltimore her entire life, and asked her if she remembered this family from out and about around town. She remembers the annual birthday newspaper stories, but she does not remember ever having seen them or heard of them otherwise. My grandparents lived just a few miles from Catonsville, and my Mom was even a lifeguard at a public pool in Catonsville (where the Henn's lived) during the mid 1950's, and she does not remember them at all.

Apparently, they just looked like an average family with children who were allowed to be individuals.

Also, on the last thread, someone asked if our families gave us grief over reading about Khate. I feel a little guilty about reading about the washed up, untalented Khate, and I do try to minimize my browser if I hear one of the kids coming. They don't harass me about it, my middle son will ask, "how's your Gosselin snark today?"

And this community is so much fun - it has become more than just Gosselin snark!

Yes, kudos to the Henns!

Hate Kate's complaing about school- she picked the school and was awarof the time commitment/early rising, expensive suplies and fees...but she doesit willingly for 'her' kids. Ugh.

As for 50 Shades, I find it a bit disturbing how popular it is and the fact that young kids ( tweens?) will be reading it. I'm all for free consensual choices in a relationship etc but I don't like the thought that young impressionable girls are going to think this is the norm. I know autoerotic asphyxiation is pretty common in middle schools....I think it degrades women- although as I said, I have not read it.

Are you recommending 'How to Be a Master Student' to high school students? Kudos to you! I was serious when I said that book changed my life. I had that in my very first college class, College Success 101. It taught to me think differently. I remember there was motivational poster on wall, too, "To know your limitations is to know limitations" - and a light bulb switched on in my head. I have been unstoppable ever since. No negative attitudes for me. Anyway, I just wanted to share my story about that book, so you could know that it does help.

Even her tweets reflect the nothingness; the continuing saga of getting up early to get ready for school, followed 12 hours later by the early bedtime version. We get it, the paychecks are going back to school. Who cares? I will say I also wonder how the younger ones will ever develop individually with her 6-pack mentality? Good luck kids.

Morning all. I'm catching up from the last of the previous thread. Lots of great comments after I shut down the computer last night!
Georgia Pacific response to KateGate--wow, I'm impressed that they got right on a response to the backlash. The response may have been skirting sending her free toilet paper, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that what Kate got was more coupons. QN just fell for the grift. Kate is very good at it and yes, companies will continue to fall for her rhetoric. 8 kids, single mom, blah blah blah. Oh, you poor dear, here's a hand out.
It's sickening that Kate takes (love how take is an anagram of Kate, btw) while others continue to need. Why should she have received a wad of coupons instead of truly needy moms?
Because she can; it's her nature.
The Agassi/Graff kids-- great to know that the parents are not continuing the insane cycle of pressuring children to be an extension of themselves.
I saw Molly Ringwald appear on the Today Show a few times last week. She was promoting her new fictional book. When asked about letting her young daughter into showbiz, she was clear that the answer is no. Her daughter won't get her support until she graduates college.
This from one of the most successful and famous young girl actresses of my time anyway. You can not think of John Hughes and not think of Molly.

Thanks Sue. You succinctly put into words the crux of Kate's recent actions and and mindset. She really is contemptible. Cries poor yet brags all the time. Stoops to the lowest level of begging when she doesn't need to, yet holds herself as higher and mightier than the mediocre masses.

Yikes, what a piece of work. I wish she & the kids would watch ( and absorb) The Farmer's Wife next 'beloved' movie night.

I am also one of those who stopped reading 50 Shades about halfway through. I actually found the terrible, terrible writing to be more of a distraction than anything else, but i also share concerns about the message it may be sending about what women want. And boy was I teased for being "prude" for not sticking it out lol. I'll take prude thanks!

In contrast, I am reading The Horse Whisperer for the first time, and the writing is so far and away above 50 Shades I don't even know when I wasted five minutes on 50. I love that movie and I never got around to reading the book. I don't read much since I read so much at work, but this has been a wonderful journey. There is a beautiful passage where the author is describing the history of horses and their tenuous relationship with man, and next thing I knew tears were streaming down my face. It was just so beautifully written. And for anyone who is a mother of a daughter, or a daughter, this book does a wonderful job of exploring that delicate time when a daughter is transitioning from childhood to womanhood. Highly recommend.

Yes please donate books to your library if you don't need them.

Lately my M-O is to search for great books at flea markets and garage sales and buy them for a song, enjoy them myself, and then when I'm done give them to the library. They love to have them and I don't like a bunch of books kicking around. Win-win.

Dmasy said...

Sue Buddy...Thank you.

Admin...I read a few pages of 50 Shades while standing in a book store. Topic was unappealing to me, but more than that, the writing was so awkward. I could not understand all the hype. I flipped to another 2 pages deeper into the book...giving it a chance. Worse. The dialogue was horrible. Anyway, I totally agree with you.

If I am giving my time to a book, I expect it to have some quality.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I'm not a book snob, I will read pop culture books and not expect the writing to be like Moby Dick. But I don't think it's unreasonable to expect they at least write better than I could! loll

I also tried to read the Twilight books and found the same problem with the writing to be really lackluster. There are so many good writers out there, there's just no reason for this. If I'm reading a book I could have written, something is wrong. I bet a good writer could have written 50 so the writing was decent and it still would have been a hit. But as it is now it's just painful.

Westbrooke yes, dad Charles was the bad guy and said no to his kids. No we're not moving to a fancy house, no we're not accepting all that money or all those toys or that trip.

As a result, we have four happy successful adults who today recognize all the good choices he made for them, who make a difference in their community by teaching, helping special needs kids, coaching kids. What a great story of the end result of the choices you make as a parent. This is the finish line, and Charles Henn can cross it with two arms proudly raised.

I don't know why it's so hard for them to grasp that some parents (I daresay MOST) believe that the value of teaching your child to work hard for what they want, far outweighs the immediate benefit of being able to stock up on free toilet paper, cupcakes and Lorax tshirts.

Gosselin told several days ago, made me relieved to hear that she was able to overcome such a difficult situation.

Kate has no idea how fortunate she really is, for the blessings she has received. If things had turned out differently for her, would she tell a shelter they "Don't know HOW to help her?" Seriously-- would the sense of entitlement still exist, if she were emotionally and/or physically beaten down? Maybe I'm over-thinking the psycholgy of it, but it's just a thought.

People used to ask Andre all the time about his love for tennis, and he would always say, "I hate tennis." He called it the loneliest sport possible. He appreciated how much he got from playing tennis, but still he hated it.

Interesting! That's what Todd eluded to too. Sure he said there were times when he enjoyed himself and the attention, but he also said he had a lot of struggles with, do I really like being a quarterback or is it just something I'm good at? Because he was good at it. The poor kid was so entrenched in football he was having trouble knowing if he even liked it. And of course his dad was known as a tyrant and no one wanted to upset him so they went along with it.

His parents eventually got divorced and his dad transferred him to a new school that had a good football program and he didn't want to go. His mom tried to stop it in court but lost. What a concept, just let the kids go to the school he is used to. His mom sounds like a lovely woman who tried really hard to stop this but couldn't. So familiar.

There are so many parallels to the Gosselins. Kate is so convinced that the children love filming, love the lifestyle of public exposure, love acting and performing and movie making. Do they really love it or is it all they really know? Do they really love it or do they just want to please HER? She should really ask herself these questions.

Todd obviously felt extremely unfulfilled despite having everything. He turned to drugs, partying to fill the void, became a vile person who cursed out his coaches, and his career was over within a matter of a few years. Done.

And yet I get the sense that is what he wanted. He angrily said in the documentary he can't stand when people say he threw it all away. He said it was MINE to throw away and my business to do that, not yours.

I think Todd was actively throwing it away and good for him.

Mr. and Mrs. Henn have my respect for the way they raised their family. The silver lining to my originally being a fan of J&K+8, is that it ultimately made me aware of how wrong it is to film children for a reality show. The only exception would be for a one-time special perhaps, or maybe annual updates of an unusual family. But I am 100% against the filming of minors for a weekly (or otherwise regular, frequent) reality tv show. It is wrong to sign away your child's privacy.

The Henns didn't make a huge deal about the fact they unexpectedly had four babies to feed and care for. Mr. Henn got down to the business of providing for his family, and I'm sure his wife was often run ragged herself. However, reading this little blurb about them, I would guess they probably had friends and family who loved them and helped out where they could - and they graciously accepted that help, instead of fussing when things weren't perfectly matched.

Kate could have said "wow, I'm so grateful for all of these leftover coupons, but I'm going to donate them to a shelter, or do a give-away contest on my blog/Twitter"
"Please support QN by buying their products so that they in return can continue their good works for the community and the world".
It's mind-boggling that Kate never thinks this way.
That, to me, is win-win.
(toots own horn a bit here) DH and I went to Costco last weekend with our rebate (2% or so with Costco AmEx) check toward our purchases. We used a good portion of that rebate (free money!!!!!!!!) for food donations to our local soup kitchen. We bought some pricier things like canned meats, because that's what the kitchen said is really lacking in donations. So, we got tuna, chicken, garbonzos for proteins and puddings just for fun.
They were again grateful that we think of the needy that they feed, and that feels better than anything we could have bought for us.
Plus it's a tax donation, so how could I lose?

It also shows how powerful social media as well as email and phone calls can be. If we (and I mean a communal we) had remained silent or simply grumbled on this blog about Kate's grifting, QN would never have issued a statement. It was the universal outrage that made them take notice.

I have often thought that not taking any notice at all would be the better course, but i can see now where outrage worked for the best.

Tucker's Mom it IS a win-win for her in so many ways but she doesn't think big picture.

If she gets a reputation for being generous and creating buzz for products even MORE products will contact her with various offers. Her greedy self could skim some off the top while still giving back, no one would know. But thus far she has a reputation for products and companies being forced to issue press releases about how they want nothing to do with her. Not exactly ideal for what she wants to accomplish.

Admin, I read The Horse Whisperer a number of years ago, and loved it as well. Fairly recently, I rented a little documentary film about Buck Brannaman, the real life horse whisperer. His early life was brutal. His mother died when he was quite young, and his father physically abused him and his brother. Buck and his brother were an act that toured around, doing roping. At some point, the boys were taken from their father and placed in a foster home, where they both thrived.

Does anyone remember that book by OJ Simpson that Judith Regan was going to publish?

Public sentiment squashed that book and led to her firing.

Who in the world names a book "If I Had Done It"???? I've always wondered if she really, truly thought that book would see the light of day.

They should have fired her just for being stupid. And him....... well, he ultimately found the place where he belongs.

I recently read the comments on an article in a gossip site on the Gosselins, and one lady explained why she is a former fan - while Jon and Kate Plus Eight was on the air, she wrote directly to Kate saying that she would like to buy all eight kids Christmas gifts and asking Kate for suggestions. Apparently Kate wrote back, asking her to send a gift card for Target instead.
It makes me wonder just how much in gifts and freebies the Gosselins receiver over the years, not just from corporations like Lane Furniture but also from individuals. Even before the tups were born, Kate (and Jon) went on a non-stop begging spree, and Kate has never stopped.
If Kate has stashed away several million, as we suspect, it has to be in part because the Gosselins got so many freebies which they would otherwise have had to buy.

Kate can't even bother to tweet and promote the Special Olympics fundraiser she is participating in. It's a little over 2 weeks away, and all she tweeted to the woman promoting it is "I'm ready!".

Kate once said she has an addiction to giving back. What she should have said is that she has an addiction to people giving back to HER.

Yes, I have thought that several times re O.J. Simpson - he may have been aquitted by that jury years ago, but he was guilty of murder. He knew it, the public knew it, and even the jury knew it. His life, as he knew it, was over. Never again respected by his former peers in the football world, and the only people who would associate with him were lowlifes.

I do believe in karma. Kate is living it right now, in her cold, tasteless McMansion, with its never-ending maintenance costs. She is an aging, bleached blond with no talent beyond grifting. She will eventually lose that house. The sad thing is - I feel sure those children will receive little to no money for all the work they did during the filming years. I would not put it past Kate to spend their trust fund, justifying it by saying it was for their welfare (maybe that's where their private school tuition is coming from). They will turn 18, and those trust accounts with be empty. Greedy mother will have spent it all and still be grasping for more.

We know that the kids were duped into filming Christmas on Not Christmas, but for Kate, Christmas has been non-stop since the tups were born.
Midnight, however, is approaching, but I think people and companies will continue to donate things like vacations for the sake of the kids.

It never occurred to me that they could be doing so because they felt like prisoners to their own talents.

Well, when you lie about how much your children wipe their butts just to get free toilet paper, and then the company has to issue a statement aplogizing to the public, I would say you are running out of things to beg for. I agree that they will keep getting stuff for the sake of the kids, UNTIL the kids start having very public problems and diva-behavior of their own. It is coming and soon. It will start small; one G kid doing some bullying, another dressing like their mother, another with tatoos, bad grades, smoking a joint, drinking party at a friend's, rumors of entitled attitudes or lazy work ethic, cheating on tests, speeding tickets, DUIs, ... and worse. It's coming so soon, I'm afraid. And I didnt even count the one or two that will runaway from home and want to live with Jon and the court mess that Kate will move heaven and earth to hide.

Here's a real life example of a kid trying to break free from a mother's vise grip...

When I was a freshman in college I hated the school - it was out-of-state and I had wanted desperately to go to the state university where all my friends went. My mom chose my school for the 'exclusivity and name factor'.

I asked at Christmas break to not go back. Got nowhere - I 'had' to go back and graduate from THAT school.

I hated it. Was desperately unhappy, felt extremely out of place...

Like Todd, I felt I had no options. But I did! I quit going to class. Simple. Easy. And it provided me with a GPA of 1.89. YAY! My mom wouldn't pay any more tuition "if I was going to squander my gifts".

Finally, I got my way.

Sadly, my little venture which I felt forced to do had years long ramifications re my self esteem.

I'm really smart but I failed on purpose. How does one reconcile that? I failed on purpose to achieve my larger goals, but... I still failed.

I took some time to think about whether I'd 'really failed', as in it wasn't like I tried to do the work and was not able. Was it 'failure' if I just quit going to class?

I went on 6 months later to enter the school of my choice, paying for every $ of the tuition myself, got a BS degree with a 4.0 GPA, went on for a masters degree (BS), and then a second masters degree (MBA). I entered a doctoral program before I finally saw that I was studying just to prove something, not because I needed the degree for a career.

In my dottage, I still cannot forgive my mom for forcing me to go to a school of her choosing; I blame her for making me fail on purpose just to get out of there. Except that real blame should attach to me, right?

The bottom line in this story is that the first school was simply NOT a good match. I saw that. My friends and relatives saw that, but she couldn't. She had to be able to say her daughter went to "Prestige College".

Backfired. LOL. It left me with a lifetime of shame and guilt for deliberately failing as a way to get out. I think the three degrees were my way of trying to regain my dignity.

Sometimes I wonder what mothers do to their kids!

She is long since gone, but continues to affect me. While she taught me a gracious way of life, and all the manners in the world, I caved and chose the chicken way out. I suppose I could have stuck it out... but I was so deperately unhappy.

I wonder if the G kids will feel this way someday. Especially the boys.

Right now I'm rereading Anna Karenina (thank you Kindle free books) and am enjoying it a lot more than I did long, long ago in school. Affairs, infidelity, "bastard" child, etc., all without the "gory" details.

You go ahead and toot your own horn all you want, as far as I am concerned. One thing I have become more aware of from reading this blog is how many little things most of us do routinely to give back, for charity, for non profits, etc. I dont even think we realize it, we just do it as a matter of course.

At my house, we buy things at thrift stores like Goodwill all the time for the animal rescue and for the church nursery and church kitchen. At my sister's church, the youth group was doing a paint makeover at the area Senior Center and my sister decided to take pounds of lunch meat, cheese, breads, potato salad and lemonade for the kids. Boy was it well received. A few weeks ago I saw bean bag chairs on sale for a wicked low price and bought 2 of them for the public library's youth reading section. A happily flustered librarian is worth her weight in gold, I'll tell you.

How many of us over the years have driven neighbors to the grocery store, or doctors appointments, or did some cooking for someone who is ill, or took in some neighbor kids for a day or more when something happened in the home?

A few years ago a residential home for profoundly mentally disabled children had to evacuated due to a gas leak. This organization is well loved and respected in my area. You never saw such outpouring of offers of assistance from individuals.

A senior center one town over was surprised this summer by an individual resident, who arrived with a car loaded down with cases of bottled water. He just wanted to donate. I myself have passed out so much bottled water this summer to road workers, traffic cops... I just never gave any of this any thought before coming to this blog and being exposed to someone like Kate Gosselin whose entire way of life is begging and taking and demanding.

I remember the McCaughey and Dilley Septuplets. I have a great amount of respect for each family; The Dilleys did an annual Good Housekeeping issue at Christmastime, and that was it...no reality show or commercials. The McCaugheys did a few Dateline follow-up shows, but not much more. Each family was "given" a house from the community (not sure of the exact details, but the community outreach was very generous). The Dilleys sold the house and moved into a smaller one with ONE bathroom. They said they were happy, and it encouraged time management, etc. There was a story about a dentist offering Bobbie McCaughey free dental work, since her teeth were a bit crooked and stained. She turned it down.

That is why we have respect for people like that.

Just like that bully in Arizona who harassed the woman at the Chick-fil-A drive thru. He got fired, she was sweet as can be and is getting endless praise.

Google images the McCaughey kids. One pic is of a birthday party. Each child has his or her own cake, which look homemade. No one for all-all for one cupcake for them. Kate has millions and buys a cupcake for her 6 kids, Bobbie M is a regular "mediocre" person who makes birthday cakes for her kids.

Sad.....Grifty, you are a pathetic person.

And I apologize for all the typos in my post this morning. It was shortly after 5am, and the coffee didn't kick in yet. Now, after a large Dunkin Donuts French Vanilla iced coffee my hands are a'shakin'

(okay Dunkins.....I gave you a shout out.....I hearby demand you overnight me a year's supply of free coffee. Pronto. You should know that when you know how to help me you should be running at all times.) *claps hands* AND DON'T FORGET THE PIZZA!!!

The avatars are so clever, love them all! I am impressed with everyones creativity.

What first brought me to this blog was the very few minutes I had watched of j&k&8. Older dd came home from college, and raved about this show we had to watch, it was about this cute couple and their adorable 8 kids. So it came on, dh and I wanted to see what she was talking about. One of the infamous couch scenes was on, and Ms Kreider was berating Jon about something. My very patient dh was offended, turned off TV, and said he thought Jon should leave her, Ms Kreider was so insulting and ridiculing Jon. Dd said that J&K were cute and teased each other all the time. Dh told her that was not teasing, that was contempt, and no one should put up with that from their spouse.
To answer a question from prior thread, I rarely talk about Ms Kreider with real life friends. Dh thinks most reality shows are worthless and isn't interested. Older dd who was such a huge fan lost interest as the kids got older and not as cute, she liked the antics of the adorable babies and toddlers. A friend who used to be a big fan and I still talk about Ms Kreider on occasion, she also liked the cute little kiss and Jon, got disgusted when Ms Kreider was so nasty to him. When Ms Kreider was on dwts she and I were on a Free Tony crusade!
Anyone want to go to the beach?

I keep thinking back to the McCaughey septuplets. You never hear much about them...only yearly updates. How is it that this family of 8 with HOM was able to live peacefully, out of the public eye, and even thrive? Maybe Kate can take lessons from them? I think their faith is/was much stronger than Kate's which not only kept the couple together but also kept the kids grounded.
_____________________________________

You are correct.

The Henn family above, the Dilleys, the Macaugheys, the Harris family, the Hayes and all the other familes of HOM all lightly dabbled in the spotlight. A book or two here, a Campbell soup commercial for the Macaugheys, a short lived tv show of the Hayes family (showing that they are completely normal) an Extreme Home Makeover for the Harris'. The other 99% of the time they live or lived a life of privacy and anonymity. They went about the business of raising their kids like any other American citizen would.

It was so very odd then, when Jon & Kate had the tups and thrust themselves into the limelight, demanding that everything be done for them/handed to them. "We have 8 kids to raise! We have *8* kids! Society created these fertility drugs-Pay our electric bill!! GIMME TARGET CARDS!!!!!!!! NOWWWWW!!!

What has been the most disturbing to me is how they perfected begging and panhandling to an art, making it almost elegant. Kate is still pulling it off to this very day. Kate is a beggar. It doesn't matter if she sits on the side of the road with a cup & a piece of cardboard that says "Please give to a reality show veteran" or if she sits on twitter, begging with her ipad. She can put all the lipstick she wants on that pig-it's still begging.

Then there's the psychological aspect they wove into their begging. While they were begging for this and that, at the same time they were claiming to be supporting their kids on their own, with no help. "Gimmee, gimmee, our house is bursting at the seams!! We do it all on our own". No, they did not. If they would have worked as hard at starting businesses to sustain themselves as they did to NOT support their own kids and not lift a finger to do it, they would both be legitimate and long term millionaires.

Speaking of making begging look elegant, Kate has managed to sanitize, what IMO is verbal and psychological abuse. She has been shown on TV being downright mean and cruel to her kids. She would slap Jon, then call it a "lovetap." No one said a word, because I guess if the kid is perfectly groomed, wearing Gymboree and they are being verbally attacked in a $1.2 mansion, that really isn't abuse. If you hit another adult with an open hand but call it a lovetap, you're taken at your word. But I'd bet the farm that if Honey Boo Boo's mother said some of the same things to her kids that Kate did or slapped that guy from Deliverance she lives with, CPS would be there in a heartbeat. Quick action was taken on the Teen Mom who hit her boyfriend and was shown being neglectful of her daughter. But everyone looked away at Kate's abuse of Jon and the harsh and irrational way she treated her kids. Further feeding Kate's already bloated sense of entitlement and belief that she doesn't have to play by the same set of rules as the mediocre people.

Amen Admin Amen! There were so so so many chances that this could have been positive but IMO at every turn the choice was fame over children. You will never get the image out of my head of those toddlers playing with cameras inches from their little faces and the "do overs" to simply get on a school bus. Or for that matter being left alone in the yard with crew and "helpers". I will never get over the lies of TLC about hours they were filming. I have a complete disdain for anything called reality. I have said it before, reality television wouldn't want the standard family, they want freaks or people willing to embarass themselves . . . I am of the firm opinion that it is an illness to do that to yourself or your family and my outrage was while adults are adults and can make this decision for themselves, the children are nothing more than victims. I really believe that. Westbrooke

Wayward 101, You nailed it! I was thinking the same thing. Kate got away with things that June (Honey Boo Boo's mom) never could and I believe it is because they state they are rednecks and Kate presents herself as classy (her definition, not mine).

Perfect example of this is Nancy Grace and actually the whole news media. Outside of Jodie and Kevin, child exploitation was not mentioned in the media concerning the G8, not even when Jon was on and there was all this talk about him wanting the children off the show. No, it was all about Kate struggling to support 8 children and the show being that support. Now comes Honey Boo Boo and the other Toddlers and Tiaras girls and now it's child exploitation. Perhaps Honey Boo Boo's family is struggling financially and the show is helping them out, but you will never hear that used as justification like you do with Kate.

Personally, I think all the above cases are child exploitation. I'm just saying the media picks and chooses how to portray each story. Looks like Karma may be coming to TLC, too.

I think the sad truth is that it's easier to call white trash, crude and crass people child exploiters. It was harder for the media to call a pretty young mother and eight gorgeous and adorable kids child exploiters. It was just too easy on the eyes. It took the media forever to get past the facade.

You nailed it too!

We have all scratched our heads as to why the media never called Kate out. I still can't get the visual of Anderson Cooper, distingished journalist, having to sit there and listen to Kate talk about how she sat by the phone when the kids were at Jons (barf, spare me). He sat there! And listened that drek! Politely! Why??? He sure didn't hold back on the pageant moms though, didn't he get up and leave in disgust? There is NO difference between a pageant mom and Kate, except what Kate did to her kids for years was WAY more invasive and exploitive.

Kate has gotten a pass for way too long, that's why we were so looking forward to GosselinBook coming out. Finally, Kate gets what she has coming to her, and she & her pricey lawyers couldn't threaten, bully or slither out of it like she usually does. Unless she already has. It's Aug. 21 and not a peep. Until Robert tells us something different, I'm guessing he's working out a $$ deal with Kate to squash the book. I don't see any way in hell she lets it be released, no matter how much it would cost her.

Thank you for sharing your very personal story. I hope you can let go of the shame and guilt you say you still carry around because of failing on purpose. People choose many ways to rebel. When your wishes were not being heard, you were forced into finding a way to rebel that would ensure that your wishes were heard.

I think you owe it to yourself to feel proud of your accomplishments. You could have easily sunk into self pity, which could have become extremely destructive, but instead you went on to excel in school and earn your degrees on your terms. I see that as a triumph.

Instead of seeing yourself as a "chicken," I hope you will be kind to yourself. You faced an excruciatingly difficult situation, and you found a way to solve it. You should feel proud of that.

So many situations like yours could be prevented if all parents could just do two simple things: listen to and respect their children. This doesn't mean parents have to agree with everything their children do, but it does lay the groundwork for a healthy, trusting relationship.

Still in black because my iPad won't let me post in blue (or maybe it's just me hells bells of course it's just me! - lol). In any case I have to use my laptop or desktop to post in blue. Sometimes, it's just too much trouble.

Admin, I think we will absolutely see sabotage from at least some of the children at some point. And that sabotage could take many different forms. Just as in the situation Anonymous This Time described, when people feel they are not in control of a situation, they will do whatever it takes to empower themselves to gain at least some control of their destiny. It is human nature.

Taken to its most horrific level, it reminds me of stories I have seen and read about POWs in "work camps" in WWII. These men, despite being brutalized and starved and tortured and humiliated and degraded, somehow found the strength to sabotage the projects they were forced to work on. They did this as a way to hold on to their dignity and give themselves a sense of purpose. Survivors have said this was the biggest reason they survived.

I read this blog for so many reasons, but a very big reason is because it helps me see things in ways I had not thought of before. I love that.

This particular blogger said in part (bolding is mine):
And just so you know, I've met the Gosselin children and they are delightful, percocious and want and lack for nothing.

I saw that you were giving free toilet paper away to Ms.Kate Gosselin. I'm wondering if instead you might be willing to NOT donate TP to a person who is able to send her children to an elite private school at the cost of $100,000 a year, travel to NYC on a standing hair appt with a designer hairdresser, and fly all over the country to run marathons, 1/2 marathons and even a few 5k's and instead donate TP to an inner city youth program for children living way below the poverty line in Reading, PA that could really use the help. I don't begrudge your willingness to share, but I do question your reasoning about giving to those who truly don't need it, but ignoring the rest of society that lives within such tough economic circumstances.

Good blog article.

while Jon and Kate Plus Eight was on the air, she wrote directly to Kate saying that she would like to buy all eight kids Christmas gifts and asking Kate for suggestions. Apparently Kate wrote back, asking her to send a gift card for Target instead.
It makes me wonder just how much in gifts and freebies the Gosselins receiver over the years, not just from corporations like Lane Furniture but also from individuals

********
In the episode of their fake Christmas, Kate was sitting in the living room, gifts were spilling out of a fence she had set up around the tree and she was telling the camera about how the kids got so many gifts from viewers. She was talking about "how much they love us".

Georgia Pacific does do a lot for the communities and giving back. I appreciate that. Just because they gave some coupons to grify, doesn't diminish everything else that they do in my eyes.

No, it doesn't diminish what they already do. And they probably do a lot, as most big companies who have a corporate giving policy do. And good for them.

If they choose to send Grifty Millionaire tp, fine. Own it. Don't lie about it. Or imply that they did less then they did. Own what they chose to do.

Don't try to say that they sent a few leftover coupons when it appears that product was sent.

It's the lying that makes my crazy with Grifty, and now she's conned yet some more people and another company into lying to cover her grifting tracks.

She contaminates everything she touches.

AuntieAnn said...

Miss Marple @ 119 - I agree. It appears as if they were blindsided by this incident. Could be the person in charge of donations, etc hadn't the faintest idea who Kate Gosselin is. Which is kind of funny in and of itself. At any rate, they know now.

If they didn't know who she was, Kate lied again. She said they LOVED her family.

=====
I too thought NG's outrage was misplaced during the Gosselin divorce hoopla. She sat there and screamed at Jon without a mention of his exploited children. I thought she was all for protecting children but apparently only when it serves her purpose.

I agree the Gosselins got a lot of private gifts and donations from individual and companies that we will never know about. I recall reading Just Want You to Know (I think) and she mentioned a lady bought the kids shoes every year- never heard about that before. Another sent hooded animal towels. A couple of examples. And I know she liked to tell people about giftcards!

Glad so many are turning blue and sorry, but it was difficult! I am not the only one, I guess. My son did it, though, in under 30 seconds, unraveling my feeble attempts !

As far as Tervis tumblers go, I've got a couple of them (GO METS!!) but can only use them at home and not on the fly. It seems whenever I drink with the lid on I spill it all over myself (and this is sitting in a chair at home and not driving). I don't know if it's just me or if it's the width of the little lip piece. I use one of the Copco travel mugs. I agree with those that say Kate got away with things that Honey Boo Boo's mom never could, but disagree that it is because they state they are rednecks.

I think that Kate's behavior was 'allowed' because Jon was so passive...(and I don't say passive in a mean way) I believe that Jon loved Kate and put up with her treatment of him because he found the path of least resistance to Kate made his life a tiny bit more tolerable...and he really loved and enjoyed taking care of the kids. I think that when he said that he stuffed his feelings down till they exploded in his bad behavior once he left Kate, was exactly what happened.

I don't think it was the 'media' that controlled the way each story was told, I think it was TLC that controlled all the 'poor Kate, trying to support 8 kids all alone' story. TLC sure crushed Jon, and it wasn't because Jon was bad and Kate was good. It was because Jon didn't want the kids filmed, and Kate would do ANYTHING to see that they were! I think that is the Karma TLC is about to face.

Kate will beg for their needs and then spend her money anyway she pleases. It's disgusting, really. Every food pantry I know about locally needs TP for donation, along with other toiletries. If you can't buy your own food, then it's tough to buy TP. I don't know anyone who uses donated TP and takes beach front vacations, do you? It's just "over the top" grifting. Really, the Gosselins have used the fact that they have 8 kids for the purpose of their own greed since they came to be. Not a pretty story.

I've been away from the computer all day, dealing with life stuff. Nothing major, just trips to the library and the car wash and the grocery store and the vet. You know, mediocre stuff. I haven't had time to read all the comments, but wanted to weigh in before I forgot what I wanted to say. Those senior moments are coming more and more frequently, LOL.

Interesting about Todd Marinovich. Those of you who are old like me and also baseball fans will remember the name of Jimmy Piersall. He was a famous, and very good player for the Red Sox and Indians, as well as a few other teams. Unfortunately, he was better known for his many blow-ups, antics and dust-ups. Anyway, his career included a full-blown mental breakdown. His book "Fear Strikes Out" details the abuse and pressure he received from his father. It was made into a movie starring Anthony Perkins as Jimmy and Karl Malden (in a very rare "bad guy" role). Check it out. There are so many parallels.

Mandy, thanks for that link on shades of grey. I haven't read the book. I'd heard it was very badly written and I have a low tolerance for that. Interesting take on it, if true. Anyone here read it and agree? Disagree?

Admin, I agree, the Twilight books are very badly written. Did you read/hear about the big dust-up about a year ago when Stephen King criticized the books? He was talking about the Harry Potter phenomenon and Twilight and said basically that J.K. Rowling deserved her success because she knew how to write and he couldn't understand how the Twilight books became so popular because they were so simplistic and poorly written. The Twi-hards wanted to hold King book burnings! Sheesh!

Well, I haven'turned blue, but I have tried. Will work on it over the weekend, Honest Injun, but something about this computer just doesnot want to cooperate. So please hang in there with me.

As for Kate and her complaining, I would rather hear she read her kids a story at night instead of the angst about waking them up,keeping them up and then her being"so tired" as she is such a Saint. If school doesn't start until Monday, why doesn't she just wake them up early on Sat/Sun and let them have this week? She is such a biotch to them. I fear for the 6,I truly do, as someone mentioned, she kept them all together to start school at the same time, even though some were more advanced, very bad move on her part. Now that they are in the 2nd grade and some probably are 3rd grade material, then you have problems with a bored child in school. Not good. She needs to let them be individuals and stop her crap, feeding them little portions, dressing them alike, making them pose like they are all the same height. She is a major Beotch and she will never change.

Remember Grey Gardens? They owned their house and that is how they were able to live there in the decay, etc., But Katie G has major mortgages and she shouldn't have a mortgage with all of that money she had/has. She will screw everything up,no doubt, she will come out of that house broke. Karma is a biotch!

As for Kate as the Blogher convention, I'll bet the only reason she went was to GRIFT. She never went to any of the major speaker's events. She never stayed with CC, she went out and around with her bodyguard (say where is he?)and took everything for 9 people (probably 9 Lorax DVDs also in addition to the shirts) but she screwed up big time with the QN stuff. I hope her septic system goes haywire. Our old house had to be worked on because the previous owners had done that exact thing (used too thick tp)and we had major $$$$ go into that ground (I am talking $2000.00 plus)as our yard overflowed with what was in the septic tank...so if Kate grifted too many coupons, she will pay a price for QN. Know something? No one buys that thick tp when you can get a good single ply for your toilet. Especially if you have children in the house. Or does she count out how many sheets each child can use on each visit to the bathroom?

Trust me, NO ONE could be more messed up than I was. Did you read the mess I made? ALERTS from Google that I was being hacked. Frozen regular email. Forced to change my password. It was freaking exhausting!!! But I did it, and I know that if anyone as clueless as I am can do it....so can you!!

I will tell you how I finally turned blue. First, I went to my regular email, and unclicked stay signed in. Then I signed out, and clicked on the x to totally remove my regular email from the window. Then I went to the top right of 15 min. and clicked sign in. That took me to a form to make a new/additional gmail. I made sure that I unclicked stay signed in on that one, too. I created Remona Blue, and presto...I was blue. I really think the problem is having that stay signed in box checked and having to totally shut one email down in order to use the other.

I have since discovered that I must totally sign out of my regular email when I want to post on 15 minutes, and sign out of Remona in order to sign in again to my regular email.

There may be a way to have both emails at once, but out of fear of messing up, I've not tried that.

Does any of that help, or does my lack of computer speak confuse (or irritate?) you? You won't hurt my feelings if you tell me that I just typed a bunch of useless gibberish!!

50 Shades of Grey? If she did, it is my hope her tween followers didn't go out and get the book to read for an English assignment. You know, if Kate's reading it then it's something I automatically want to read.
Oh my!

Yes Kate once mentioned on Twitter a short while back she was reading 50 Shades. Remember when for about two weeks she would mention she was reading, never to mention reading again? Someone finally asked and she said 50 Shades. Then everyone like me who has read it or attempted to read it wondered why it took her longer than 3 days to get through it. It's that kind of book.

As far as I know that's the only thing Kate has ever said she's read, other than post it notes. Big surprise.

I read the first two of the Twilight trilogy but gave up when I realized I was hoping Bella would be murdered by someone, anyone.

Once, don't bother with 50. I read the first Twilight as well and for as poorly as that was written, 50 shades is 50 times worse if you can believe it.

Twilight and 50 Shades have almost the same sort of plot the entire book. Do I love him, does he love me? What is he? Is he a vampire, is he some kind of sadist? Like, omg, this goes on for 400 pages.

YAWWWNNNN! Back to The Horse Whisperer!

I hope Mady and Cara don't read it. They will be very confused, living with Kate and her relationships with people...

One point that worries me.Isn't the main female character a student and virgin when she meets this weird man?

Admin:
Thanks, I won't ! 50 Shades does echo Twilight, doesn't it?

I loved The Horse Whisperer! ( book & film)

Ohh I have a recommendation for this who have OWN.

A reality show called Million Dollar Neighborhood about how a town deep in debt pulls together to get out. Things like garage sales, getting rid of things they don't need even cars, downsizing, boosting their businesses. It has great ideas and I love stories about people getting back on their feet through their own hard work. Every week they vote on who did the best that week, not just money wise but in terms of ideas, positive attitude, leadership, and they get $10,000.

&&&

It took you two books to get there? I must be more violent than you. The moment she like, stepped into my life I wanted that drip strung up high.

A friendly reminder now that school is starting to the locals of our long-standing request to not reveal times of bus pickups, days off and not days off, etc. Unless it's relevant, like Kate is lying about something, working the kids on school days, etc. You know the difference.

All those lawn guys working around here probably don't realize that LI was named after them!

Hang in there, Parent in Lancaster! If it hadn't been for Remona Blue's example, -a paragon of perseverance if you ask me since she couldn't even post her name in black, before-, I would have let the whole Blogger's mess at my first try. (So thank you, Remona, by the way! And since I'm in my "Oscars thanks", Marie, I wouldn't have an avatar if it wasn't for the step by step you publish yesterday!)

Whoever started the avatars, thx!

What are these books so popular with young people?? I never saw anything like the Twilight fans- real fanatics! They are the cause IMO in the drawn -out and really low treatment of KS.
Did you read about those T-shirts? Incredible.

And now 50 Shades the highest paperback seller ever or something? Why?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Once I've wondered that myself.

I wonder if this thing goes in cycles. I think for awhile people had been reading so much more "challenging" fiction like Oprah book club selections and the like, and maybe people just wanted pure bubble gum crap. Like how once in awhile you just want a big cheeseburger.

Once - yes, she's a college student days away from graduation and a virgin. I read the first book and was unimpressed. I don't shock easily but I can see the attraction as the sex is kind of interesting at first but then gets really repetitive. The female character actually becomes a pretty willing participant so I don't get all of the freaking out over the book

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I didn't find it that shocking either after the initial shock wore off. It's not like I'm not aware this stuff exists. I don't buy the pedophilia argument whatsoever, that's the biggest stretch I've ever heard--she is a consenting adult and half the book is devoted to how this is all with her consent. Let's be clear, pedophilia involves a child, period. If you're going to say she is being unduly influenced, then you're really talking about rape, but that's not pedophilia if it's an adult. Now is it a nasty, nasty book? Sure is.

Admin - I agree. It was a waste of time but I had to see what all of the fuss was about. So many good books out there that I'm always sorry when I waste my reading time on crap.
I also read the first Twilight book. I get the attraction for teen girls, but I was just bored by the whole thing.

AuntieAnn@136 - As a Jersey girl I can really turn the air blue. I hate to admit it but I tend to sound like Mona Lisa Vito (My Cousin Vinny).

************************

I'm a Jersey Girl, too!! Don't have the accent (blame it on too many years living in CA as an adult, followed by my nomadic travels as a Navy wife) -- but I actually DO have a cousin Vinnie. Whenever I mention 'my cousin Vinnie' to friends, I get the littany of quotes from the movie: "You shot a Deeeyaa???" "Yooots???", etc. etc. lol. Not for nothin', but Marissa Tomei did an excellent job portraying the accent of a certain segment of NJ -- unlike that damned Joe Piscopo, who has an entire nation convinced that we actually say we're from "Joisy." I attended school from elementary through undergrad in NJ (Go Scarlet Knights!), and NOBODY from New Jersey says "Joisy" -- that is a Brooklyn accent at best -- but it's NOT Jersey. Even my most Jerseylicious-ish cousins in Jersey City pronounce it "Jehzzzy," NOT "Joisy." Sorry for the OT -- but I'm very protective of my very misunderstood and misrepresented home state.

Readerlady said, "Those of you who are old like me and also baseball fans will remember the name of Jimmy Piersall. There are so many parallels."

I agree. I interviewed Jim when he was working for the White Sox, sometime in the early 80s, if I remember correctly. His is one heck of a story. I've read the book several times. It's a great read, even if you're not a baseball person.
