Jodie Foster: 'If I had to grow up in this media culture, I don’t think I could survive it emotionally'

Dang, even Jodie Foster is now describing child stardom as the 'cruelty of a life lived as a moving target' and says you have to 'submerge beneath the foul air and breathe through a straw.' Holy moly.

I don't care if I turned out just fine, you idiots, child stardom still SUCKS: Foster
says when she worked with Stewart on
The Panic Room,  she tried to get
Stewart's mother to talk young Kristen out of acting.
Oh, snap. Turns out Jodie Foster thinks
child stardom is just as horrendous as
we've always tried to tell you it is.
The former child star, so-often cited by naive pro-child exploiters as a "success story" and proof child stardom is not that bad after all, is finally done with playing nice after another former child star, Kristen Stewart, has spent the past few weeks having an unfortunate misstep plastered all over the tabloids. Foster has pretty much avoided the typical pitfalls of former child stars. The drugs, the partying, the depression, the reckless behavior, the affairs .... well, there was that little presidential assassination attempt that was pretty much all about her, but otherwise, she came through her childhood fairly unscathed despite working since she was three years old and having no memory of ever not being famous.

But, now Foster flat out says there is no way she would want to be a child star in today's culture. In fact, she would call for someone to help lead her out of it (Oh, you mean like Aunt Jodi tried to?): "I would only hope that someone who loved me, really loved me, would put their arm around me and lead me away to safety."

Foster has been rather polite and tight lipped about child stardom previously, however she recently described her mother, who managed her career, as a "mostly negative influence in my life."

An absolute must read: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/08/15/jodie-foster-blasts-kristen-stewart-robert-pattinson-break-up-spectacle.html

Thanks Admin, that was very nice of you.

OT: I took Molly to the vet, oh that poor little doggy. She has anxiety issues and only weighs 4.6 lbs. but she was so shaky they couldn't get blood so easily, had to be stuck several times :(( The good news is it is not pancreatitis (which he did suspect) but she was dehydrated. She had to get a shot and also infusion of fluids. I was there for quite a long time. She is home now, my bill was more than Kate's was for Shoka, but I don't care because this little girl is so worth it. She is resting now. Vet gave us special food for her, she can only have a tablespoon at a time. He called it a GI upset.

Thanks for all your wonderful help, it felt good to be able to discuss with someone.

Good to hear your little Molly saw the vet, and is on the mend.

At least you know what to do the next time she has digestion issues.

Maybe this wouldn't work I don't know. But I was just thinking if Kate was smart and since she's whining about how much school supplies are costing her an arm and a leg...then why the heck didn't you buy school supplies throughout the year when they were cheap?! Huh, Kate?

You know when you go to Wal-Mart and you see single subject notebooks on sale for 98 cents or something, or pencils that are 88 cents and folders are 86 cents some of the time.

If you're smart you'll try not to buy school items in bulk perhaps and buy them maybe a week before school starts before stores might sort of jack up the price because they know it's a big deal.

And if she's kept the kids backpacks and lunch boxes what is so expensive?

School uniforms? Okay that might be a given but so is buying clothes for other kids who go to public school and have to have the latest and best of everything because it's cool. Just except the fact that clothes and shoes are going to feel like you're pouring money down the drain every time your kids get a growth spirt because all your parents paid for when you were growing all the things you ever needed in life.

And nobody ever said your kids absolutely need to have the coolest, latest, trendiest right now item either.

I mean, Kate if it's that expensive do yourself a favor if all you do is block criticism from your life least you could do is keep your yap shut! But no.

You open that door, it's your own fault deal with the consequences of wanting everything handed to you.

Again, I think I sound really mean but sometimes I think she just looks for ways to sound stupid!

angie said...

Kate does not take those 6 anywhere because she would have to deal with you "mediocre people" in the bathrooms of the movie theater. Again, at the Phila Zoo. Kate and the school supplies thing. I don't know what she's considering "supplies," but if she's including books, then yes, it's insanely expensive if you buy them at the school. What I do is to get the list of books, check other sites where I can find them used, such as Amazon. There are countless places online where you can find what you need. I bought an $80 textbook on Amazon for five dollars, in excellent like-new condition. There are also sites where you can rent the books and return them at the end of the semester, and in many cases it's much cheaper than buying them, keeping them and then never using them again.

In addition, check with the teacher to see if you need the latest edition. What schools often do is to put the newest one on the list when the only change from the previous edition is to the cover. The contents are the same and the book is so much cheaper.

Kate doesn't even think as far as exploring other options. She just buys and whines about it.

Kate, yeah, how long have you had kids in elementary school now? Those brand-name items or specific things required if you were smart or half organized as you claim to be you would have kept a list or two and you know again bought those things when they were on sale. You know, like when you buy milk on sale. Oh...that's right you don't. My mistake. Your kids are in elementary school you should already have this crap down by now.

If your twins are in middle school don't worry if you've forgotten that you know your parents probably forked over to buy you school supplies back in the day and they survived you can at least do the same for your girls. And I do believe kids aren't generally required to have everything physically with them the first day at least. So that leaves you at least a week to grift for that special calculator or whatever.

@Admin, nah, I don't know how much wisdom or common sense I have, some days. I have my moments of stupidity and wrong choices but unlike Kate I can admit to a screw up or two. I just know that none of my screws ups will ever land me in the media, or prison, or the nut house (wait...well, no not yet anyway).

Kids? I probably wouldn't make a good parent I know that right now. Coming from my abusive background, I don't think unlike Kate I'd ever want to continue that type of cycle. But maybe, one day just not now anyway.

*******
Some teachers INSIST on certain things. In the small public Kindergarten classes here the teachers require FISKAS blunt tip scissors,
CRAYOLA crayons (as opposed to Rose Art or a generic) and on down the list. Their purpose is said to be this way everyone has the best, there is less breakage of the items and everyone has the same colors of markers - some
have pastels, glitter, teal, etc. and the teacher has things that "require" bright red and bright blue.

That's the reason I have been told for this. It also keeps the "name brand" kids from making fun of the "generic" kids, and it stops feelings of "jellusy".

Back in my day we "got what we got and we didn't
get upsot". Or something like that.

Anonymous said...

Fidosmommy that's just amazing to me! In our school district parents are encouraged to buy just what they can afford. Brand doesn't matter and if you can provide extra for the kids who can't afford new supplies, that is even better. I guess they are more concerned with just having enough to go around, brand doesn't matter

kris said...

Ugh, my head is going to explode! Ms. Organization says in former CC blogs how she buys up all along when sales come along. And ays she saves M&C uniforms so she only has to uniform 1 of the girls & has uniform swaps with friends. Earlier today she has 100's of $$ of school supplies to buy for and has claimed to be buying uniforms for the last week. Now she tells a twitter friend she does save some stuff from the end of the year. Which is it Kate? Good Lord woman you can have that much to buy. I have four kids and I'm not that much of an organized person but it doesn't take me weeks to get school supplies bought. I do buy my elem aged son his supplies before school because I print the list off of the school website (which probably most schools do these days) and my Jr/Sr high kids I wait until a couple of days in after school starts b/c each teacher wants specific things. She's such an idiot.

As far as teachers requesting a certain brand of supplies - I feel they can certainly ask for a particular brand, but they cannot REQUIRE it. These are donated supplies, and if a family cannot afford to purchase the name brand, the teacher (and school) ought to be grateful that the parents are able to provide the non-brand version instead. Most schools and teachers are well aware that we're all feeling the financial pinch, and thus merely indicate that a generic brand is just as good as a name-brand. Better to have enough supplies for all, then certain students doing without because their parents could not afford the name brand. :)

Just got back from orientation day for my son's high school. I chose to only pay for the gym clothes and ASB card today. Next month, I'll pay his transportation fee (related to sports), and the month after that the yearbook fee. I already had school supplies on hand - binders, pens, pencils, erasers, ruler, calculator, etc. Some is left over from last year, and other items I purchased here and there over the summer. If any teacher were to tell me I had purchased the wrong kind of pen or paper, I would politely tell them to make the best of it.

AuntieAnn said...

Kate has no room to complain about brand name anything. She's been selling her brand for the last seven years, it's time for some Gosselin Give Back. And it's not like she's a paycheck away from being homeless. She says it gets her? Why does every dime she spends on those children seem like it's coming out of her hide. Those kids worked hard. Besides that, Kate enrolled them in a private school so she should expect that the list would include certain brands.

She sure as hell spends the G8's money on the high end brand stuff for herself. She should just STFU and jimmy open her purse.

I have to add that I come from a family of 8 children. We were spread apart, but my parents had to get us all ready each year for school, with each of us needing school supplies, new clothes, and often new shoes. At the time I went to school, we didn't have back packs because we had lockers at school to leave our books and binders in. So my parents did not have that expense. However, each fall, they managed to get us organized on my dad's salary, without any huffing and puffing about how it was exhausting and financially draining.

Kate makes such a huge deal of having 8 kids. Yes, that's a lot of children! But if she were really as organized as she pretends to be, an activity like gearing up for school isn't a huge deal, especially if you plan ahead during the summer months and keep an eye open for sales.

The other thing most of us moms do naturally, is network. Whether it's with the aid of a helpful spouse, or if you're like me (a single mom), coordinating with other moms to carpool, share helpful advice, and just as someone to talk and joke with because they are going through the same thing, it makes the whole experience easier. Kate has no friends, she drove away her helpful husband, she drove away her family. She has Skeevy (paid), nannies (paid), housekeepers (paid), and assorted helpers (all paid). How does she bear the loneliness?

Anonymous said...

The only name brand item our school asked for was Elmer's glue. Not a big deal.

meagler said...

I use to dislike when the would send home a note asking for specific brands. I figured unless they were giving me money to buy them, I got what I wanted. There were a few items the teacher would rationalize why they wanted a specific brand, and that I supported as it made sense.

I use to spend no more then $35 per kid for school supplies, not clothes included. So I guess x 8 that would be over $250..so technically in Kate=speak, she did spend 100's of $$$ but she writes it in such a way to hope people take pity on her.

Plus if its too much for her, there is always public school!

** I am not in blue :( ** lol..

Hope your saving your coupons Katie!

Sweet tart, I come from a family of four children and have four of my own. We always try to make the whole back to school shopping a fun experience for the kids. It is always something we all looked forward to. It's a good way to make the whole school experience a positive one. It doesn't matter to my kids if they are getting name brand clothes or name brand school supplies. It's all about having a fun experience. I certainly never complained about it to my kids or made it sound like a chore. Kate seems to do this with every experience her kids have.

As far as her loneliness, sometimes I do feel bad for her because I do believe she has a sickness of some type.

fidosmommy said...

Truth is, I doubted the "required name brand" list until I saw it. It is posted just inside the door of CVS Pharmacy here in town and in the 2 Walmart communities near here (they include our school district on their lists.) I don't know what would happen if a kid showed up with non Fiskas scissors, but I have a feeling a note would go home with the expectation that the proper item would be purchased in the very near future.

If I had to show up to school with a ruler, you can bet my dad would have gone to the cupboard and pulled out his old engineering ruler he used in college. Elmer's glue on the list? Well, here's a rubber tipped bottle of mucelage.
Hole Punch? Here, take the 3 hole punch that weighs at least 20 pounds. It was solid steel and is made to last. He had it in college too.

My dad loved me and took care of my needs, but
he just didn't see the value in buying stuff when stuff you already had worked just fine and would last you until your great grandchildren are old and feeble.

Even as far back as my day I remember a teacher insisting we all get a certain type of thin set of markers for circling nouns in red and verbs in blue, things like that. Oh and NO trapper keepers!

I thought that was all so silly. What does it matter as long as you have something to circle with. And then there were the teachers who would say hey I don't care what you bring aside from showing up with paper and something to write with, I don't care if that's a crayon just be ready to work. RIP my AP History teacher. :(

So much of school was not logical to me. Rules for the sake of rules are not how I roll. I could never be a teacher and I knew that as far back as 8th grade. My hat's off to you.

I'm working on turning blue, but it's not easy!

Jumping In said...

Kate seems constantly caught off-guard when she realizes she has to buy things for her 8 kids. Does she wake up every morning thinking the numbers will magically change? Who does she think those 8 people belong to? She speaks as if the expense of providing for all of them is suddenly a big surprise to her.

They go to school (private, at that), which means they need school supplies, yes all 8 of them Kate! She traded on having 8 kids, flaunted them when it suited her, and now sounds pissed she has to part with $$$$ for their school supplies.

She has to organize her grifting schedule better. She should have been sending the school supply tweets out from the grifted beach house holiday. When will she learn!?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Maybe I'm old school but I don't care if one kids has crayola and the other something generic. Cry me a river. Oh well that's real life. Sometimes kids have to wear Old Navy while their classmate goes to Abercrombie. Get used to it because that's how adulthood goes too. We coddle kids so much. They need to learn to be content with what they have.

Unknown said...

I have always purchased school supplies throughout the year. Often, when the back-to-school rush is over, the big box stores like Office Depot, Staples, Target, Wal-Mart will put the school supplies on clearance. You can get some pretty good deals that way. I've been able to get 2-inch binders for 50 cents, spiral notebooks for 15 cents, a package of Bic pens for a dime, etc. When I find stuff that I know my kids will be able to use, I go ahead and get them and store them until the need arises. In fact, neither of my college-aged daughters have had to buy spiral notebooks or notebook paper, or pencils/pens/highlighters during their college careers...

Kate needs to walk the talk when it comes to saving money.

I checked it out. I found a couple articles which said this happened in March. The mom's court appointed attorney got the charges dropped even though she apparently did let her dance in a bar. The article also said that the sister had her baby and she was born with two right thumbs. The proud grandma makes jokes about it.

People often use the expression "what is this world coming to?" Apparently, this is it. A road kill eating family who lets their 6 year old dance on a bar.

1. making a bday cake....do you REALLY need 75 lbs of flour for those little itty bitty cakes?

2. 'organizing' the basement...took hours, if not all day, and the pic showing her work was a couple of those cheap plastic shelves with labels stuck on them.

3. same thing with 'organizing' her pool towels.

She was worked up about getting those chores done, and the resulting pics were laughable.

Regarding the Humane Society and Shoka-I'll repost my commment from the previous page....

"The non-fan(hater) on twitter who has been posting about the Humane Society being there, tweeted earlier that someone should call the Humane Society to check on Shoka. She lives in Canada. She also tweeted the phone number to call.

Nobody has said they called(doubt they would admit it if they did)and I also doubt anyone did. So I would take the whole thing with a grain of salt. Some of them just make empty threats and never follow up on them."

I think the hater(who I'm sure Kate has blocked) was tweeting that the Humane Society visited Kate so that one of the fans would ask her about it. I believe it's just another ruse on her part to get to them.

I can remember getting in trouble in first grade for having more than the requisite number of crayons in my box. The "list" specified 8 and my grandmother had just given me a box of 24, so my mom sent me to school with that instead of buying the box of 8. My teacher had a fit. God forbid I have more of a color choice Of course, I was also in trouble when the teacher found out I could already read. Teacher: "But how do we know she was taught to read the "right" way?" My dad (who was a teacher) "There is no "right way" as long as she can read it and understand it. Besides, we didn't teach her. She taught herself when she was 3." I was mortified! I refused to touch a book for weeks after that. My parents finally demanded I be moved to another class, but it was almost a year before I rediscovered my joy in books.

Readerlady, for as absolutely AMAZING and inspirational teachers I have had, I had a few bad eggs too.

I had one teacher who refused to let us erase anything. Erases were banned. Why? That's stupid. I think her theory was I want to see all the mistakes you made to get to the answer, but for a child that can be mortifying.

I had another teacher, a music teacher, who would tease me and another boy who was my friend about how we were boyfriend-girlfriend. We were not at all, and even if we were we were only in 7th grade! I came home sobbing once and my mom was in the principal's office the next morning demanding to know how it was acceptable that any teacher could have driven me to tears. I'm surprised that tool wasn't fired.

I guess you have to take the good with the bad. But if I were the boss I would fire any teacher teasing children on the spot, period. Unions I guess.

Anonymous said...

@readerlady, boy can I relate to you! I loved to read when I was little anything I could get my hands on really it didn't matter. My third grade teacher told me, "There is no way you can read at a fifth grade level." I got put in the special class sort of like, "I'll show you."

Back when I was in school you had to follow along with your pencil and if you didn't you got in trouble for not doing it. I was bored completely out of my mind!

When I was in school you were tested once and if you were not good at math (which I'm not) then you got told, "If you can't do math at the level you should be able to then it means you obviously can't read or write at another level." That was the thinking.

I wonder about Kate's kids, some kids are more advanced with one subject than another. By sixth grade I could read at a college level easily but I'm lucky if I can do fractions. With the way she is keeping her kids together, she already proved that when she said some of the kids weren't ready for preschool or kindergarten or whatever so she held them all back instead of letting those who were ready go.

What's going to happen to these kids if some get more advanced than others? Is she going to pull the same stunt? No offense but I think it's wrong to group kids together based solely on one capability.

Wasn't it in an episode her kids were 5 or 6 maybe and some of the kids couldn't read and Kate said, "That's what the sign says for people who can't read."

Which tells me, Kate is trying to convey to the public that all 6 kids are the same size, they are not. So does she feed them all the same amount of food? Remember when they were all small and several of these little folks were always hungry? Kate freaked out that they would be heavy like Jon. I wonder if she still keeps them all hungry to keep them thin? I would not be surprised. She poses them all so you cannot see their feet. BUT that one at the Beach gives it away. Some are much taller and a few are few small. Maybe that is why she doesn't take them out, around town, so locals can see that the tups are not alike in more ways than how than not being identical.

She finally found her match in the courts. They are the only ones with more "persuasion power" than she has. They gave her no choice but to accept that. Understand now?

Exactly. It's all about what is in the best interest of the children. It has absolutely nothing to do, whatsoever, with what a mother wants. Sure you can advocate for one thing or the other but at the end of the day the judge is required, by law, to do what is best for the children.

Way back after Ms Kreiders latest post about saving money using all those disposable things, made me think about taking dd to college last week. She brought four Tervis tumblers with her to school. They are great for cold or hot beverages, they come with different logos or decorations, you can wash them in dishwasher, and it keeps trash of a disposable cup out of the environment! She had one with college logo, one with music logo, one with circles, and a hello kitty one we found at bed bath and beyond. They run around $15 to $20 , but they are great!
I don't drink coffer, but several friends and the dh have said that McDonalds coffee is better than Starbucks, and much less expensive. Or, here's a concept, you can make your own coffee at home! 7-11 had good coffee too, and they periodically run promotions, buy reusable coffee mug and get discount when you bring it back to reuse it. You get a discount for bringing in your previously used 7-11 drink cups to refill also.

Also chew on this sheeple, if Kate is struggling as much as she claims, can't even afford the movies, and has this house and school to pay for, there is no way any judge would find it would be in the children's best interest to lose out on the monthly child support boost. Never.

Even without a source, which we have anyway, 50-50 is absolutely the most logical, easiest explanation for why the support payments went away. In my view it's really the only one that makes sense anyway.

I confess, I don't talk about Kate to family members or friends. I really feel that I should move on, but I find that I am fascinated by the sheeple who venerate Kate. I would find it hard to worship ANY human being. Why on earth would they revere Kate Gosselin? When I used to watch "Jon and Kate +8", I thought that the producers KNEW that Kate was coming off as a loathsome creature. The fun part was clear, SHE had no idea she was being viewed as a battleaxe. I guess the sheeple were in the dark, as well....and remain so to this day. Mostly, I believe out of stupidity or stubbornness.

Oh...well now I feel like it was a bad idea to post that. I didn't mean to come as being, well, yeah I'm not going to type that.

Seems like "twits" are lucky in drawings right now!

That was exactly my first thought when Kate said she relieved Jon of custody. There is no way that the courts would have agreed to this if there was no custody split and Kate was struggling financially. They know how much money she has. They look out for the kids, and if they thought that she was in such financial turmoil, she would continue to get support.

GeorgiaPacific responded to the post on donating toilet paper to the needy. The facebook post had 2700 likes and over 100 responses and it is going up by the hour last time I looked. All but a few were not favorable to Kate. There were a bunch that had some ideas of where the TP would have better usage on the facebook page.
====

Most celebs would change their name and move under a rock if a big TOILET PAPER distributor had to go on the internet and make an announcement that they have nothing (formally) to do with you.
Not Kate though. You can't embarrass, shame or humiliate a narcissist.

I talk about normal things with family and friends, not some washed up reality star.

Not that you people aren't lovely. :)

I get eye rolls from my immediate family if mention the K word. They had her number long before I did. They're all males too. I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

Ok - I'm pretty good at math and I have very little musical ability. I think we're breaking the "rules".

Looks like GeorgiaPacific is not one of the corps that Kate works for or will be working for in the future.

WOW! Just WOW! GP must be going through a PR nightmare to have taken the extraordinarily serious step of posting an explanation about TP gate and, in the process, distancing themselves from the Grifter Supreme.

I thought Quilted Northern's response was really respectful and restrained.

Though I'm not sure I believe they were just sending her extra coupons. Sounds like damage control to me. And even so I still think it would be much more righteous to give those coupons to the needy, Kate already GOT some why does she always take 12 cookies when she should take 1 or 2? It's so rude and tacky.

NEW POST!

Also Kate stop talking about how much things cost you. It's tacky.

Not just tacky--it is downright vulgar.

I am having avatar envy. I can't get an avatar to show up in Blogger, even though it is showing on the profile and the top of the page. I usually use an IPad, which, as Jane said, has issues. But it also isn't working on my desktop. Also--no garbage can.

Marie -- I have always enjoyed your posts. As admin said, you have a lot of common sense, which does make you seem older than your years. it is a compliment!

Sue Buddy, your article is very good as usual!
I just read the Georgia-Pacific company statement and I agree, it is very unusual for a company to put out a statement like that. They must have received a huge number of complaints.

Has anyone seen the ESPN documentary The Marinovich Project. It's about football player Todd Marinovich who was bred since birth to play football by his father.
____________________________

Admin, I haven't seen this show, but I recently finished reading Andre Agassi's autobiography, Open, and his father was a fanatic as well. When Andre was an infant, his father made a mobile out of tennis balls and hung it over Andre's crib. He cut off a tennis racket and taped it to Andre's arm so he would swing it and hit the tennis balls.

People used to ask Andre all the time about his love for tennis, and he would always say, "I hate tennis." He called it the loneliest sport possible. He appreciated how much he got from playing tennis, but still he hated it.

He and his wife, tennis great Steffi Graf, have not encouraged their kids to play tennis. I read an interview where they were asked about whether their kids would play tennis. The answer:

"We never really introduced tennis so much into their lives. They've chosen other things that we were surprised with ... they love their arts and music.

"Jaden tried different sports, soccer and things and ended up with baseball. We nurture their desires and interests."

Since that interview, I think their daughter has started to play some tennis, but it isn't the main focus in her life.

Here are two of the greatest tennis players in history, and what they care most about is making sure their children are doing what makes them happy. What a novel concept - nurturing your children's individual desires. It is something Kate will never be capable of understanding.

According to QN statement, Kate only received coupons--not boxes of TP. My, how the mighty have fallen. I wonder if her shelves are becoming bare.

At most theaters, if you buy the largest size popcorn, you get free refills. When my kids were little, we always brought lunch bags and divided the tub up so everyone had their own popcorn. We also brought small paper cups and a thermos of juice mixed with seltzer.

QN also very cleverly disassociated themselves from her, saying that they are not formally involved with her. Still, why would they send her coupons when those coupons could have gone to charities, homeless shelters or military bases who are so much more deserving?

Their statement said they sent the unused coupons to Kate because she tweeted her thanks to them for the coupons she got at the BlogHer conference.

"Sorry it upset me?" Beacause they sent it to those in need? ARE YOU KIDDING US Northern? That statement is horrible!!! It is an insult! She is by far in need! They took up for themselves and her. Go read the Northern Facebook people. Look at how many Mothers were begging for coupons, and were told to get the chance to WIN a damn coupon you had to play a trivia game. Yet all she had to do was ask, TWICE.

She got the free TP from Nothern sent to her house. I have no doubt. GET A REAL JOB KG! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

I don't know how they do it at other schools, but my school would send out a list of things (grammar school) and we would all send them to school on the first day. Thereafter, everything went into community bins on the shelves that ALL children could pull from for the specific items they would need for any given project. No child ever had to be called out for not having paper and pencil or glue or whatever. Everything was community property.

They claim they don't give out coupons normally, so I am thinking maybe these coupons weren't for cents off, but for free rolls?
