Recap: Kate Plus 8 "8 Movie Makers": Onlooker #2 films some orphanage kids

Still catching up on a few outstanding recaps, enjoy!

8 Movie Makers is another cop-out bottle episode, where it all takes place at the house, which is dirt cheap to film, and it's mostly filler. Thankfully it's only 21 minutes, so this recap should be much more brief and a relief for me!

I have a new toy. Amazon fire stick. It's amazing. It has a gazillion apps to access all the T.V. and movies you could ever want, and music, and it's only a one-time purchase of $39.99. Much of the content on the apps is free or at least partially free, if you're a cable cutter, and if you're not you should know you can now pretty much watch all or almost all of your shows this way for much cheaper than a cable box would run you. Even if you like a traditional "guide" and DVR options as you channel surf, you can still have that: you have the much cheaper options now of Playstation Vue or DirectTV streaming on your fire stick, both of which operate more like a cable box for a third of the price and no holes to drill in your floor. If you haven't cut the cord by now, why? They even have sports available now. Best of all my T.V. is mounted over my fireplace, and with the fire stick I don't need any wires coming down from it because it's just a little piece of plastic that plugs into the back. I'm in heaven! Fire stick is not paying me to say this nor do I make any dough if you buy one through the link I posted, I just like sharing things that make life enjoyable.

TLCgo has their own app for Amazon fire, and for once, TLC has an app that is smooth, organized and easy to use. You just browse or search for your series, and when it pops up it shows you all the seasons they have and all the episodes. Scroll on over to what you want and hit play and you're off and running. For the longest time I wasn't able to catch up on old recaps because I simply couldn't find the episodes anywhere, not for free anyway. I like that TLC has now put up all the episodes of all their series on TLCgo now. TLCgo is free, by the way, as long as it's part of your regular cable subscription (it should work just fine if you have Vue or DirectTV streaming, too).

This first aired in August 2011, a whopping six years ago. It's always interesting to look back and see what's different and what's the same. Things are frankly, mostly the same. As per the usual, Kate is taking credit for an episode idea in that she thought of it to have the kids make their own movie. The movie they are forced to live all the time for the cameras isn't enough? Geez.

A company called "Movie Makers" comes to the house, headed by Melissa and Sam. I googled the company to see if they're still around and yes, here they are, still running their camps and private lessons. Their 10 week classes are only $375, which frankly is very reasonable.  They're also still bragging that they are "as seen on Kate Plus 8". Seven years later maybe it's time to drop that association. What's also funny is I found an interview with a very polite Melissa about her experience on Kate Plus 8, where she explains that the idea to hire her was dreamed up by one of the producers brainstorming episode ideas, whose daughter had participated in Movie Makers and enjoyed it. Baw! Busted, Kate. Wait a second, why would you need to sit around a table brainstorming episode ideas for a reality show? I love when people inadvertently out this charade for exactly what it is.

Melissa is an "actor," by the way, and has a decent-sized IMDB page of mostly bit parts in mostly D-list shows and movies. But she did make an appearance or two on reputable shows like Army Wives and as "Onlooker #2" on One Tree Hill. Follow your dreams and all that. Onlooker #2, lol. I prefer ogler myself, and I'd like to be #1 please!

Well this is nice, Kate takes a hike because she wants the movie to be a surprise. More than likely this is not a trip so she's not interested, but it's fine by me. Imagine collecting a huge paycheck, likely in the high five figures, just by saying, "Here kids go make a movie with Melissa" and then going upstairs and cutting yourself up an avocado to put on your salad. Kind of crazy.

The younger kids seem awfully young for the things Melissa is explaining to them: rolling, speed, slate? The kids look like they don't care and more just want to play with the clapboard. I'm going to call this right away that this activity is way too old for them, teens would get way more out of this. With little kids, it just turns more into a chaotic play time. What is with this show and their struggle to find these kids activities that are age appropriate? Usually the activities are way too babyish, but it goes both ways, and this time the activity is way too mature for them to get much out of it.

Collin is yawning away on the couch. The kids pull out a crap ton of costumes from God knows where and start trying them on. What is this movie about? Are they just randomly picking customes? Do the kids understand what they're doing and why? Because I'm confused myself.

Well armchair psychologist this, Mady has decided the movie will be about an orphanage. Melissa instructs one of the sextuplets that she will play an "orphanage girl". Um, does she mean "orphan"? Oh well, actors are not known for being bright.

They cut to a shot of Sam folding up all the mountains of unused costumes and putting them back. Why aren't the kids doing that? They created this cyclone. What tends to happen to celebrity kids, wealthy kids or kids on T.V., I've seen first hand, is that when people come over like this, they don't treat them the same as they would other kids. Happens all the time. They get special treatment, including cleaning up all their crap for them. It's not good, Sam. Not good at all. When I nannied, I used to have to ask the housekeeper to please stop making the children's beds in the morning and cleaning up after them all the time, as I wanted them to make their own beds themselves and clean up after things themselves, and to get in trouble when they didn't. It didn't matter to me things weren't made up as perfect as the way Ophelia would do it, I wanted the children to have to do it. It's important. There is a long line of people in these children's lives who have done them no favors.

Melissa explains that they're going to start filming, but they will film out of order. That's typical of most films. Mady remarks that their reality show is filmed in order, so this is a change. That's not true, we have caught them multiple times filming out of order, and Jon was once ordered to keep his beard for the sake of "continuity." Now why would you need to worry about continuity if you were always filming in order? Heh.

It's fascinating to watch how much time they waste showing us absolutely nothing. There's a whole lot of the younger kids rambling, which is even more meandering because they're so young, and a lot of walking around, and nothing is happening.

Even at this age, it seems to me doing the camp, or having friends over to help make the movie, would be so much more fun than Mady and Cara having to direct all their younger siblings. Kind of a drag.

Collin and Joel are manning the cameras, and they're just way too young for this. They're chopping people's heads off gyrating them up and down so much I'm getting nauseous. Collin is wearing an adorable oversized pirate hat. Hehe.

Great, perfect! Melissa is constantly saying to everything these kids do. I can't stand when all adults do is over-praise kids.

Melissa's introducing herself again. I thought we already did the meet and greet portion earlier. Well, hello, again. Why do I get the feeling Melissa is the type of gal who tends to do stuff like mix up the salt for the sugar?

Melissa says at the moment the movie doesn't make any sense, but she'll figure it out. Um.

The TLC interns are getting cutesy, putting a little of the script up on the screen "Ext. Magical World."

Melissa thinks it's just so wonderful that the kids don't have a problem with looking at the cameras, which is the problem for other kids she teaches. Melissa, that is because since birth they have been filming a virtual Truman Show, you understand that, right? Don't you find their heightened abilities to work so smoothly with a camera crew at such a young age creepy, like, at all? She's getting dumber by the moment. I'm surprised she didn't use the cool industry lingo she's been invoking all along, it's called spiking the camera, and it's such a common mistake even from adult professionals that is should really weird her out these kids never do it.

The kids are starting to lose it with all this filming, and some are hitting each other and getting annoyed. Kate and Melissa are excusing all this atrocious behavior, especially with guests over, as just simply sibling rivalry.

Day three of filming? This doesn't sound fun. It sounds exhausting. That's over half the time it takes to film a real drama episode, like Law and Order, and it's well documented how exhausting those five days usually are. Why does everything have to be a 10 out of 10 here? Why couldn't they just make a short film for half a day or something, maybe a day? Melissa has given up even putting make-up on at this point, heh, and she looks tired.

At this point Melissa says she has no clue how the movie will turn out and it's all over the place. Um, isn't she supposed to be in charge here? How much is she getting paid to be this confused? And in conclusion, may I please remind you that it does not say RSVP on the Statue of Liberty!

So, was Kate really totally MIA all these three days? That's kind of odd, though I really enjoyed the break from recapping her histrionics. But, I have to admit, it makes the episodes even more boring than they usually are when no one is having a mental health episode for me to discuss. Kate said earlier she cleaned her room during all this time. Good, I'm sure it needed it.

Kate looks so tan she looks like she's a totally different race, she looks like people who aren't white but who like to dye their hair blond. She looks ridiculous, and you can really see the difference here in how much less she tans these days. They finished filming and now it's time for the movie premiere. They don't explain how they get from filming to a movie premiere. I'm guessing Melissa goes back to the office and splices it all together in between bit parts as Onlooker #2?

The kids are so young, I'm not sure they really know what a movie premiere looks like to get a kick out of this. But production did a good job nonetheless, making a real mini-red carpet at the house, and Melissa and Sam standing in as reporters asking questions. I like Melissa's movie poster, it looks like a poster from when Lifetime used to make halfway decent Sunday night movies about things like kidnappings. Not bad at all.

Melissa interviews Kate on the red carpet. Shmoopy is in her element. Talk about myself? Yes please!

They all line up on the couches and floor of course with popcorn, and watch the movie, The Orphans' Adventure. Good punctuation, Melissa.

So far this is kind of the plot of Annie, in which the hard knock orphans have to clean all day. Also, it sounds like their real life. Remember Kendra crying because the children had so many chores to do every day? It takes kind of a Stephen King-like twist when some of the orphans get sucked down into a vortex and end up..... in Kate's back yard, far as the eye can see!

I'm losing the plot here, suddenly there are other kids popping up in various costumes, and Mady and Leah find a pirate chest and take something out of it. Oh, Melissa.

For once I think Kate's expression is justified. She's trying to be proud of all this, but can't follow the plot either.

Leah and Mady aren't the worst actors in the world, I'm mildly impressed with their ability to trip and fall realistically, and make scared faces. But the best actor in this whole thing is wearing a unicorn costume so I can't tell who it is.

The hard to follow plot ends with some of the kids in costume inviting the orphans to stay with them. But why? It's extra mouths to feed, and they barely know them. Wouldn't it make more sense to call CPS if children are being worked to death at an orphanage? Or even the cops? Yeah this is me, during every movie. I'm that film-goer.

Melissa is getting quite lovey dovey with these kids after only knowing them three days, affectionately holding Leah's hands and swinging them back and forth and giving her a very warm hug. Does she honestly think that's a good idea for their sake? She's just going to be ripped from their lives at the end of the filming never to be seen again. This is a big reason these kids have the problems that they do now, the revolving door of people doling out love to them, then being taken away, including their own father.

This episode had a huge redeeming factor in that Kate was barely in it. She only swooped in at the end to obnoxiously make this all about Mady and her growth, when all the other kids, especially Leah, were chipping in their fair share and I'm sure grew too! And that's a wrap!

Mickey Sherman's "How Can You Defend Those People?" is a very good read.

*&&&

What's his answer? For me, when I was a defense attorney, I would always explain it that we have to give every guilty man a great defense because hidden among the guilty are innocent ones, except you don't know which one, so you can't pick and choose. I would also say, presumably to a friend or family member, I defend them because what if it's you sitting in their shoes? Believe me, it could be.

Nooo....I meant what I said, hectoring. But it could be described as heckling too.

In Scott's case, however, that smug look he always had on his face was disgusting. He was grieving that he had been caught with his pants down, both literally and figuratively. Behind bars is exactly where he needs to be.

*******************

I couldn't agree more! The 2 pictures I remember that were so smug were the one when Scott and Amber were at a Christmas party and she was sitting and leaning on him.

And the one where they were in his truck and they are looking back toward the camera.

Another strange thing SP did was subscribe to the Playboy channel and one or two other adult channels a couple of weeks after Laci's disappearance. There's nothing unusual about anyone doing that and shouldn't seem relevant under normal circumstances but it's odd behavior for a person in Scott's situation.

I can't say it any better than Nancy Grace... "He just rubbed me the wrong way".

In the doc somebody said that Laci was very straight laced and would have a fit if he subscribed to those porno channels, so the fact that he subscribed to them after she went missing suggests he did NOT think she was coming back (to thus chide him for the channels) and how was he so sure about THAT?

Plus do you really have that much of a sex drive after just learning the love of your life is missing and perhaps even dead??? It's pretty odd. I think he's a sociopath with grandiose thinking who thinks he could get away with anything.

I think a person's sex drive would sort of be put into P for Park with most people. But apparently he was confident Laci would be ok with it the same way she was pretty forgiving about the affair he told her he was having with Amber. At least that's what he had the balls to say to Diane Sawyer. Good grief.

One of my very top movies is The Shawshank Redemption.

There are a couple of parts I have to turn my head and mute but wow, it is a great movie!

My favorite part is when Andy walks into one of the banks, dressed in the warden's suit to withdraw the money that he embezzled from the prison. After the transaction, the secretary asks him if there was anything else she could do for him.

He said, Yes, could you drop this off in the outgoing mail for me? He hands her a large, thick yellow envelope. Then the next scene is the local newspaper's editor desk and he is opening the envelope.

He opens it up and starts looking at it and then the phone rings in the background, out of sight and the secretary is overheard saying, Good Morning, Portland Daily Bugle.

I love it!

I remember that! He is lying!!! He never told her that. A first time mother, pregnant about to give birth in a month and she is ok with it?

Her mother was so angry. She said that if Scott would told Lacy that, Lacy would have called her and told her and her girlfriends. She would of been crying her eyes out to them!

Diane Lane is still working in the film industry. She was a child actress and had quite a a tumultuous childhood with her parents' divorce and fighting over her custody. She said she had too much independence too young which led to some issues of her own. She is very beautiful and also a great actress. I think her career will keep on going strong for years to come.

I remember when those pictures of Scott at the Christmas party with Amber came out, and there were pictures of Laci taken the same night at a Christmas party, sitting alone in a chair. She was smiling and so very pregnant, and he was at the same time grinning that smarmy grin into the cameras and posing with his hand on his mistress's bottom. We were expected to believe Laci was just fine with that? Not a chance.

Layla, I forgot that they were made on the same night.

The picture of Lacy, pregnant was so beautiful. That poor young lady and her baby, Connor, had no clue what was coming to them.

A good liar eventually slips. But a good liar tells the truth as much as possible slipping the lies in among the truth. He should have told the truth which was most likely he never told laci a thing about Amber. Or at best he told her and she had a conniption. Nobody believes this woman would take this lying down, her mom and friends all describe her as strong and headstrong and knew her own mind. She does not seem like a pushover wife.

I came out of the docs really liking Amber. When faced with an impossible dilemma, she immediately did the right thing and called the cops. She was just a kid too.

Interesting to our veranda here, Lane also played Pat Loud in "Cinema Verite", a fictionalized HBO movie about America's first reality tv family, the Louds.
The Louds stared in PBS's 1973 documentary, "An American Family".

"Disclosure" is very good, too, and Robert Redford is wonderful in "Indecent Proposal."

Why is it that there are some movies that you can watch over and over again and never get tired of them, while others you can barely make it through and know that you never want to see them again?

There was something odd that went on with Laci's car soon after she went missing. Scott went out and sold her Land Rover very soon after she disappeared. He told some story about how it was unreliable and Laci wanted to replace it before the baby came, and he wanted to go ahead and do that for her--but he didn't replace it. He just sold it. If your pregnant wife is missing, the last thing you'd be thinking about is selling her car--that is, if you expect her to return. Or if he really did plan to replace it with something more reliable, what was stopping him? He could have traded it in for something else. But he just sold it, leaving her without transportation in the event that she did return. He knew she wouldn't need a car. He knew she wasn't ever coming back.

And how about his trip to San Diego. Everything about his car suggested he was at the very least thinking about taking off to Mexico.

I agree his family is totally enamored with him in almost a creepy way. Even the way they describe him as this perfect child growing up--no child is that perfect. They all believe the heavens opened up and dropped them an angel in little Scott when he was born, and anything that doesn't fit their fantasy they reject. Unfortunately they can't see their boy is a sociopath.

Those swayed me too. He purposely called her three times to cover himself. Why wouldn't you communicate the things you need to do and pick up etc etc etc before you go somewhere? And that bs story that his lawyers never learned about all those witnesses that supposedly saw Laci walking the dog. They said they were never informed, well why didn't they investigate and search for witnesses that might have seen something. Cripes they were charging one million dollars for their services. They should have done a little footwork themselves if they were so sure Scott was innocent.

&&&

Mark claims he knew about them but decided not to call them because he was too concerned their stories might crumble on the stand and he was confident the prosecutors had not proved Laci died when they first said she did.

I actually believe him. Eyewitness testimony like that is usually extremely unreliable, and those witnesses would be putty in the hands of anyone halfway decent on cross. You aren't really SURE you saw what you did, not under those circumstances. Numerous eye witness experiments prove that. He was right, leave it.

I don't believe anyone can be sure they saw her that day.

Also, it seems the theory is that these burglars killed her, possibly when they decided to burglarize her house. Makes no sense. Even if she never confronted them and they just happened to burglarize her house after they hit the house across the street, we'e supposed to believe that upon coming across a pregnant woman in the house, they decided to kill her when they were just their to rob stuff/Christmas presents.

&&&

The burglary is problematic, but I agree with you way too many things would have to fall into place perfectly for it to fit. If she somehow confronted/walked in on them, they would have killed her on the spot and left. How would they have killed her, got the body out and just happened to have dumped it 90 miles away where Scott was fishing. Scott could do it because he planned it out carefully, but Laci would have been a total surprise to them.

Apparently she lives in Gladys's neighborhood, because every Tom Dick and Harry claims to have seen this women, yet didn't see the burglars?

Auntie, what you labeled "cinematic onomatopoeia" (fancy!) I have always called my "ironing movies". I think I mean that addictive movie that you can walk in and walk out of the room and always know what is happening. I don't need to watch. I think I take comfort from them.

Part of my list -- Fatal Attraction, Double Jeopardy, Perfect Murder, The Firm, Overboard, Irreconcilable Differences.

I think I have several more. As I type the list, I don't see a common denominator. I don't know why I choose to watch them any time they pop up on the guide.

Dmasy said...

True Crimes -- I have a similar pattern. There are some murders that I want to study/read/know every detail. There are other crimes that I have no interest in at all.

Scott Peterson - yes. Amanda Knox - don't care. Casey Anthony - yes. Menendez Brothers - no. Jeffery McDonald - all in. Susan Smith - couldn't read enough. Lizzie Borden - want to visit her home. Manson - no.

I think that partial list is probably more than you ladies want to know about me.

That's another thing. Scott's sister said it would be just like Laci to confront the burglars (paraphrasing). Really? A small woman, eight months pregnant would be that bold?

That Peterson family seems to want to deflect a lot.

&&&

Yeah B.S. Let's not forget, she was 27 years old, nearly a baby herself. She was 9 months pregnant and had a busy day ahead of her with xmas preparations. Her husband wasn't home. She just happens to notice a burglary in progress and marches herself right up to the burglars without even placing a 9-1-1 call first?

I believe a bold and headstrong woman would try to get a good look at them and call 9-1-1 from the safety of her house. I also believe she might CALL SCOTT, or her parents. I don't believe she marches up to them to try to stop the crime in progress.

I'm curious as hell exactly what is known about the burglary--time of day, timeline, items stolen, etc. Because dollars to donuts it won't add up with "and then they killed a pregnant lady and chopped off her limbs".

True Crimes -- I have a similar pattern. There are some murders that I want to study/read/know every detail. There are other crimes that I have no interest in at all.

&&&

Ha, I'm the same way. "All in" lol. I also don't want to hear about the Manson case. I tend to get interested in men killing their wives crimes, or women killing their husbands or kids.

I can recite every last detail of the Amanda Knox case and the girl is innocent!

I'm also really into certain kidnappings, like Jaycee Duggard. Loved her book.

Unlike the movies, in real life successful burglaries in broad daylight occur right under everyone's noses because most people can't recognize a burglary. If I saw someone loading up a truck at the house across the street, I would just assume that must be my neighbor's son-in-law come to haul away some stuff to storage, or some kind of worker doing some project for them. I wouldn't look twice or think about it. I'd just go on with my day. Let's assume there's Laci walking by and she sees somebody taking items from the house. How did Laci even know this was a robbery occurring to march herself over there, confront them and somehow get herself killed or kidnapped without anyone else noticing a thing when they had all noticed every second of her walking the dog, apparently?

I forgot who said it in the doc but someone said the key to a good criminal defense is to make sure the jury has a good alternate story in their minds. I found that to be very true when I served on a jury. We were never fed a clear alternate story of who committed the burglary (a burglary case it was, incidentally). We were just told the state simply didn't have enough proof it was this guy. I noticed that several of the jurors during our day and a half of deliberations kept saying well if he didn't do it WHO DID?? I was frustrated that the six of us who thought he was guilty couldn't get the others on board. We had way more evidence he did it than there was against Scott Peterson!

That's all they're doing with the burglary, just trying to figure out a way to insert Laci into an alternate theory because jury minds like another story to imagine in order to vote not guilty. I kind of wish the burglars would come forward just to say they never even saw her. I bet the prosecutors could work out a deal where they could do so without being punished for their original crime.

This doc wasn't a waste of time for me. It was an opportunity to hear what his side was saying, and rebut it.

A bit off topic now or rather a slow reply to the celebrity sighting comments. Many years ago my husband and I and another couple were at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. We heard Cary Grant was in one of the restaurants. I adored him, watched all those old b/white movies (Fabulous 52 on Friday nights), and thought he was the most handsome, charming man ever. The four of us went up to the restaurant and I asked the maître D' if Mr. Grant minded fans stopping by asking for autographs. He went and asked Mr. Grant and came back and said I could go back. He was sitting at the head of the table, there were about 8 people there. I didn't even look to see who they were. I only had eyes for Cary. I went up to him and asked if I could have his autograph. He very kindly obliged. I floated back to hubby and friends in a disbelieving fog. Did I actually talk to Cary Grant? As we milled around, Cary and guests came by on their way out and he came up to me and asked if the man next to me was my husband. Heaven only knows how I managed to say yes and introduced him to Cary Grant (!!), and he (Cary) said he thought a good looking man would be the husband of such a beautiful woman. There are really no words to describe how I felt hearing him say that...no words at all.

And while on that subject, in high school my girlfriends and I cruised Hollywood and Sunset Blvds on Sat. nights. One night I met this guy driving a 240Z (I think) at Tiny Naylors drive-in and we got to talking. He told me he was Diane Cannon's nephew and said she and Cary would soon be getting a divorce. Those were the days. So many stories. And yes, thinking back to those days, I AM getting old but getting wise as well.

He agreed to get a dog as long as it was "quarantined. deloused, wormed, and castrated.

I saw a short about the filming of the show and fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the set. I knew I liked Martin for a reason

I wish I could remember the Labor Day Telethon when Jerry Lewis went off the deep end. I think it was something about a lack of donations. It was back in the early 70's when the war in Viet Nam was ending and all the love and peace thing was happening iirc. Anyway, he was pretty irate and made it known how he felt.

I googled it but can't find anything about it. Maybe I was smoking something wrapped in a zigzag and overreacted but I could swear I thought at the time that his outburst was pretty inappropriate. He acted like a real dick. I think he had a real mean streak in him, and apparently his kids can verify that now. It's sad what we learn about these people after the fact.

It gets very silly, not to mention problematic, to give Kate all the credit for a child's accomplishments. In light of recent events one could just as easily assume she is suddenly thriving because of all the extra time she has spent with JON.

In any case, I prefer to give children themselves the credit for their accomplishments. She is not an appendage of Kate. She is a living breathing separate person responsible for her own actions who deserves credit for good things. Good parents have bad kids. Good parents have good kids. So the idea that a successful kid's parents should get all the credit is stupid.

"Truth be known," ole Milo knows no more than the average Joe (except for maybe Brownie--wink-wink) about the "accomplishments" of these children. Why the continued pretense? She appears to just be baiting K8 into being more confiding to whoever is reading her IG comments. And K8 mostly doesn't take the bait. Whether it's because she's a post-it-and-forget-it type, or because she's not permitted to comment in this vein, is an open question. Either way, Milo proves herself, once again, as inexplicably invasive towards children she's never met and only sorta-kinda "knows" through the medium of (un)reality TV. How is this not stalkerish?

The accessories in the picture of Hannah proves that she completely drained that card that paid for all of the things for Family Game Night. She buys things not only for the project they are going to be filming she buys as much as she can to hoard for future use.

Like the "cargo ship" lol, full of paper goods from GP.

Why on earth would you want the world to know how much toilet paper your entire family uses per day? Then she said that they used 10 rolls per day. That is 3700 rolls a year!

Aww, Gladys put 8 hearts in her post -- she keeps forgetting TFW is raising only 7 kids.
SEVEN kids, Gladys. Because one of these amazing, talented, raised by Supermom, top-of-their-class, destined-for-success kids was removed from his home, and has been gone for about a year and a half. Sure takes some of the luster off of that fantasy picture, doesn't it?

FlimsyFlamsy said...

Interesting that TFW was bummed about school starting, until there was something she could brag about. Remember, this is a woman who tweeted during a "boring" field trip, and was even disrespectful enough to tweet during a parent/teacher event. But if there's something in it for her -- getting praise for being the mother of a class president -- then she's all for it.

And, yes, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Jon's influence that had H try something that might be challenging for her.

That's got to be a pooping/peeing record, considering that "a day" is only morning and evenings because the kids are in school all day. Maybe they're just a poopy family and hold it all day when school is in session and then let loose when they come home. Of course, who knows if Steve and the nannies have toileting problems.

Good for Hannah--class president is quite an accomplishment, especially with what she is going through as far as custody is concerned. She's a strong young lady, that's for sure.

I noticed that the picture posted on IG of Nanuq with someone's homework (the one posted just before the one of Hannah) has a clear shot of the mismatched floors. It looks like Kate replaced a section of the wood floor, but the new portion is much darker than the rest of the flooring. Why replace part of it with something so completely different from the rest of it if you're not replacing it all? Why not try to match what you already have? I have a sneaking suspicion that she did that because she wants to make an episode out of replacing the flooring. Even if TLC won't pay for it, she can still collect a paycheck for filming it, and maybe grift some free materials from a local business.
That must be the reason. We know she has the money to replace and upgrade anything she wants. She just doesn't want to use her own money for any of it.

So I channel surfed between Counting On & Monday Night Football. Here's what I learned:

1. Babykins & JimBoob are almost all the way back. Babykins (in very orange-looking make-up) & Grandma Duggar went wedding dress shopping with Joy & all her sisters except Jill who is still in CA celebrating Israel's 2nd birthday.
2. Joy had a really tough time making up her mind re: her wedding dress (the whole episode) and had to call her beloved after trying on the 1st dress and then again later.
3. If Joy's dress is going to incorporate swatches of the wedding dresses worn by Babykins, Grandma Duggar, and Austin's mother, why wasn't Mrs. Forsyth included in the wedding dress shopping trip in Kentucky?
4. Ben evidently accompanied the women to Kentucky and babysat his sons during the shopping trip. Meanwhile, the remaining older Duggar men went skeet shooting. Including Pastor Caldwell. Where was Mr. Forsyth?

I'm starting to think there's something to the rumor that Joy & Austin started their honeymoon before the wedding as TLC is really drawing out their wedding while Joseph & Kendra's wedding is already available for viewing on TLCGo. Why is there such a focus on Pastor Caldwell? Would he be paid for his appearance on Counting On?

I don't follow the Duggars per se--I started watching this past summer in order to track the ads. For instance, I forgot to watch last week and I probably won't watch much, if any, of next week's episode due to MNF (go Chiefs!). Someone on this board said that TLC would try to increase JimBoob and Babykins' time on the show and last night certainly seemed to indicate they are doing so. Every time I switched back to Counting On last night there was Babykins' orange face or JimBoob handling his gun, both interacting with the 'young uns'. As to whether the Duggars are done, it depends on the ratings. In the meantime, they continue to bring their controversial messages to the sinful masses while getting paid for it.

Over And Out (#147), yes, the Duggar gravy train was miraculously not derailed by the twin scandals of that finger-wagging dough boy's sibling molestation and his extramarital activity through Ashley Madison, thanks to the non-existent ethics standards of TLC. The Licentious Channel also gleefully capitalized on the Gosselin divorce, shoving cameras in the 8 little faces they claimed to care about.
And continued to line TFW'S pockets when one of those children was removed from the home.

So last night Duggars: 1.187mm viewers, 0.29 share. It looks like they've hit their level around the 1.1-1.2mm range. Which really makes me wonder how much TLC pays for this show, given the dearth of advertising when it airs. On last night's show, I read that 10+ of them flew first-class to Kentucky to shop for Joy's wedding dress, which must have cost a pretty penny. The Busbys turned in much the same numbers for their last season, but I imagine they are much cheaper to produce.

No matter how many scandals the Duggars have experienced, they can still be counted on to bring in more than a million viewers. It doesn't seem to matter which family members happen to be on the screen--they all deliver. That's the difference between them and Kate. K+8 hasn't broken a million viewers in almost 3 years, and that trend wasn't changing no mater what formula TLC tried. It's just good business to keep the Duggars and scale back K+8. You keep what works. Meanwhile, Mady and Cara are just over a year from their 18th birthdays. Kate won't be able to sell them out for pennies while she keeps the big money for herself. Her days of being in charge are going to be changing very soon.

I was pretty stunned tonight to be channel surfing and see Bill OReilly sitting back there on Fox News like nothing had happened. I’m not making a political comment or expressing an opinion about any of that. My point is simply the guy was fired so what’s he doing back in the chair? You’re never really fired on tv. I'm watching The Little Couple (the first show I have watched on TLC in months), and they are in London. They go to Buckingham Palace, see the Changing of the Guards, ride on the London Eye, and have high tea. When they go on the London Eye, Jen says it's scary going up so high in the air in the little capsule. But nobody has a freak-out. And they take Will's parents with them on the trip. Imagine that! Family! One cute scene is when they're all having tea, and someone asks Will what his favorite part of the trip was. Will gestures around at all the people there at the table. Bill makes a comment about how Will loves the company he's with. The previews for next week show a visit from an uncle, and the kids are so excited to see him.
We don't really see TLC paying for these big overseas trips for their "talent" like they used to. I guess The Little Couple still rate the big trips. Their ratings are triple what K+8 has gotten in the last few years, so it makes sense that they should get more.

I know Jen is a lot more likable than Kate, but the family is filming entirely too much.
Being a doctor, Jen has the means to fully support her family and give them everything they need. There's no reason to film her children other than she and her husband enjoy the money, perks and fame.
I realize they do use their celebrity to raise awareness, but they are still selling their children's childhood and privacy.

They need to stop and go out on top, and focus on their kids, like that HGTV remodeling couple is doing.

Kate’s dropped hints for years she wants a trip to Paris. She must be livid to find out the little couple got a Europe trip and not her. I’m kind of surprised they got this trip at all but if tlc is sprinting for high budget trips it’s going to be very limited and reserved only for their top ratings grabbers. Second and third string isn’t going to get anything but off season sloppy seconds.

Although they have provided the last three Duggar marrieds with exceptionally lavish---and lengthy---honeymoon trips, even though the ratings (and advertising dollars) have been solidly mediocre for the last couple of years. I haven't heard anything yet about Joe and Kendra, which seems odd given that Joy and Austin were popping up in People regularly when they were away. I can't imagine being trailed around by cameras on a honeymoon. It's just so invasive.

Admin (#172), maybe TFW thought her chances of travel would be better when she dropped a kid from the family. Look, TLC -- one less plane ticket to buy! But even with only 7 kids, that's automatically 9 to pay for, if you include TFW and Steve. And for international travel, you know she'd include one friend/helper
like Jamie or Deanna to keep her company. Plus at least one invisible not-a-nanny to do the actual hands-on parenting she has no interest in.

Mama C said...

I found the children on the Little Couple to be showing the same types of behavior issues that show up in all kids who are put on display for reality t.v. Showing signs of being indulged and lacking discipline because cameras are rolling. Those reality show dollars are too good to pass up. Too bad if they mess with your kids emotional development.

Layla said...

I agree that kids should not be on reality tv. I have only seen that one episode of LC since they came back, but we all know what is in store for those kids. They are fortunate that they still have extended family surrounding them, and their parents really love them and appreciate them as individuals. Hopefully those factors will help keep them more grounded. I would hope that Jen and Bill will be willing to stop filming when they see signs that it is detrimental to the kids, but that remains to be seen.

I also saw that 7 Little Johnstons is back for another season. There was only a couple months between seasons for them, so they are filming like crazy. And, of course, there are kids involved. 5 more childhoods, sold to the highest bidder.

Funny you would ask that Jolie! I was just thinking about Breck shampoo after thiniking about creme rinse! Yes, I loved that stuff and Halo too. My mom would buy one or the other and always told me to use it sparingly because it was "too expensive to waste". The mantra of my youth.

How about you? Breck girls always looked gorgeous in the ads.

(Oh and hair conditioner was called 'creme rinse'. And I don't know why I just thought of that?)

Isn't it still called creme rinse? :-)

And Milo's pants were called "slacks." Don't forget she wears a petite size and must depend on Kate's coupon site to scour the internet for her size. Otherwise, she goes slackless.

One of the most bizarre things coming from Milo, other than that scary trip where Kate actually thought she was coming to her house, was when she asked Kate which kid needed new underwear, Creepy beyond creepy.

I don't know why I just thought of that!

Dmasy - ha memory lane :)

Clairol covers the grey. Wasn't it 'Miss' Clairol back then? I can't remember now.

Think she still wears hotpants? (rhetorical question)

@Sherry Baby TLC gave them a special where they made excuses for Josh's behavior.(Devil made him do it or he was just a teenager)Everyone here knew TLC was going down the path where they would throw josh under the bus and making him out to be the "trouble maker"and ma and pa having a problem child.Pretty much what they did to defend Kate against Jon.

The Breck Girls were always perfection. Not me. I usually had a freshly done Toni home permanent to deal with!

Alberto V05.

Then they dropped the Alberto. Poor Alberto!

Faberge Organics, Clairol Herbal Essence, Short and Sassy,
Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific, Johnson's Baby Shampoo.

But I LOVED Apple Pectin!

Oh, those smelly Toni perms! My mom gave them to my sister but somehow I escaped. Anyone remember spoolies? They were little rubber curlers and we had to sleep in them Saturday night to have curls- or bent hair- for Sunday School !

There must be something going on in Gosselin world. Kate posted video of Hannah playing basketball with the dog and saying how she loves ALL her kids. She is so transparent in trying to show how everything is rainbows and skittles at the compound. I still say something is happening. Could it be court date is looming?

Growing up in a beach town and going to the beach every day, Lemon Go Lightly (another Clairol product) was our go go product in the summer to lighten our hair.

I'd be very interested to see what the public reaction would be if Josh was eased back into the show. I think TLC would go for it--they'd start with little glimpses of him in the crowd and gradually increase his visibility. People like the girls, and as long as the girls are the focus of the show, I think they can get away with it. It's obvious that JimBob and Babykins want to keep the whole family in front of the cameras (including themselves), and that includes Josh. The only thing that can change that is public reaction.

Oh, the walk down memory lane here! I'm remembering of that little jar of Dippity Do my mother always had sitting beside the bathroom sink. I haven't thought of that in decades!

I checked out the video. That's Leah playing ball with Nanuq, and Hannah is in the background in the pink shirt. Don't you love that hashtag (#I love ALL my kids). ALL of them? Even the one she banished? Two appearances by Hannah in such a short time--yes, she's on the defensive. I wonder if H is now splitting her time 50/50 again, and Kate wants to make sure people perceive H as being with her.

My olfactory senses went from Toni perms to Herbal Essences to Dippity Do ... and, then right on to the iconic scent of NOXZEMA!
