Recap: Kate Plus 8 "Game Night": Mind-mouth! Mind-mouth!

Coming up on Kate Plus 8, in quite possibly one of the dumbest, and incredibly low-budget episode ideas ever, the family gathers around the mismatched cluttered living room for a game night. Only this Trivial Pursuit is all about their own family trivia, which is stupid and narcissistic. This is what the industry calls a bottle episode, an episode that takes place in just one or two locations (the store, and the living room) and usually only involves the main characters (Kate and the kids), usually to save money when the season has gone over-budget. In many cases, though, a bottle episode can be one of the best of the series (see Breaking Bad's "Fly," Dr. Quinn's "To Have and to Hold", which literally is set in a shack the whole time somewhere outside Colorado Springs, and Seinfeld's "The Chinese Restaurant," which takes place not even in the main dining room but entirely in the waiting area, LOL). That's usually because it gives a chance for characters to really develop and actors to play off each other and for writers to stretch themselves without the distraction of car chases, snazzy locations and other special effects in the plot. But here, as expected, it's just dumb.

Best portrayal of game night on film? The Break-up! Mind-mouth, mind-mouth, mind-mouth!

These days everything Kate does seems to warrant a fresh shopping spree at Michael's on the company card. Doesn't she have a closet or at least a bin full of art supplies they could raid for these very sort of events like normal mothers?

After all this time TLC still hasn't fixed their TLCgo player, such that every time you pause it, it starts over. Gaa! It's going to be another long night.

Kate had the idea to do family trivia and puts Mady in charge. Sure, Kate, you had the idea. Mady is always in charge, and it's not fair to the other kids. Mady is sipping a crafted iced drink from Starbucks. Those really add up, Kate. Last episode you were just complaining about not having hired help. One can easily spend a couple hundred dollars a month at Starbucks on drinks for them and their kids. That money might be just enough for a monthly housekeeper. It's the little things you spend your money on that make all the difference.

Mady has morphed into a poor man's Kardashian with that thick layer of doll-like makeup and wavy black hair. As per the usual, the kids are annoyed that Kate is trying to micromanage everything.

This is unnecessarily elaborate to the point where you're in danger of this not being fun, which I thought was the whole point. Now Kate and the twins have to go shopping to get team t-shirts? Cara wants grey t-shirts, which Kate vetoes. Why? There's nothing wrong with grey t-shirts. Talk about not picking your battles.

Kate goes on an equally elaborate explanation as to why the twins talk back to her all the time and are so gosh darn disrespectful. You see that's because Kate has made them feel "safe" to say whatever is on their minds. Haha, that's some fine spin there. I've never seen anything like this. My kids are brats because I have made a safe zone for them to be brats? Heh! What idiot parenting.

Hey, Kate, your kids are disrespectful because they are so disrespected by you, and also, because you don't dare ever put your foot down that the way they speak to you is not appropriate. Honest is not the same thing as being mean. It's not cute, it's not free-thinking, it's certainly not funny in the slightest, and you are setting them up for absolute failure in so many aspects of adulthood I don't know where to begin.

Next they head to what is obviously Target to buy sheets and curtains to make the living room look like a game show set. Huh? Why can't they use what they already have around the house? There's nine people in the house, they should have bedsheets galore. What a waste of money.

After a whole lot of bickering back and forth they finally check out with their cart absolutely brimming with sheets and other junk, to which Kate mutters, "That's an expensive game show," as she swipes the company card. Still way cheaper than another dumb vacation, says the bottom line for this episode. I think it's funny that they won't tell you this is Target, because Target's clunky shopping carts and red decor everywhere are so distinctive you'd have to be really dense not to know where they are.

Just in the episode before this Mady was lamenting how mean the younger kids are, but in this episode, Mady is snapping at everyone and overall being a very unpleasant pill. Kate remarks that she sees a lot of herself in her. I agree, especially the way Mady favors the girls. They at least got to cut some colorful paper, while Aaden was ordered to sit still as a soldier in his chair and don't touch anything. Poor guy, he just takes it. I doubt Kate knew what clip they were going to use when Kate said she sees a lot of herself in Mady, which is funny, because they picked the meanest, bossiest clip ever to match up with Kate's statement. Heh.

Collin makes a sudden appearance. I think we had all speculated this was filmed out of order based on the snow on the ground and no puppies, but deceptively, they don't explain that, leading the dumber fans to believe he's back. As usual, Colin looks fine to me. If anything, he's one of the best behaved of the bunch. He obediently helps decorate his team t-shirt, is quiet and well behaved, and with a huge smile on his face, helps to hit the marker and announces the next segment. It's just so incredibly hard to picture a child with this much ability and self-control, having to be institutionalized.

For some reason TLCgo is pushing endless ads for Oregon tourism, which is odd for a show that takes place in Pennsylvania. Why not put these ads on Little People? They live outside Portland. In any case, Oregon really is an awesome place. I recommend Yachats, if you ever get out there.

The game finally starts. It's sort of a cross between Family Feud and Trivial Pursuit. Hey, did anyone see Saturday Night Live's recent Family Feud skit starring Liza Minelli? "You know, it always feels like someone just freed you from a bubble!" Inspired. Also, I love that they're not afraid to take risks, like going full on Liza Minelli skit with the full knowledge that the bulk of their millennial audience might not even know who she is. I could watch SNL game show parodies all day as opposed to this drivel.

The constant power struggle between Kate and Mady gets exhausting at least for this viewer, and you can tell it wears on all the kids. Kate said Mady could be in charge of Game Night, so let her be. Stop trying to micromanage her! It's a stupid game night, what does it matter? Save it for the important things. "Strike one!" Mady snaps, when Kate tries to name the game. Hm, what happens on strike three? Does Kate leave the show? Pretty please! I guess this is the kind of rude talking back that Kate calls Mady feeling "safe." Heh. Hey, does it feel like Kate's explanation of why the twins talk back, because they feel "safe", could easily be something said in an SNL parody of helicopter 2017 mothers? Lol!

The intern kind of ripped off the Price is Right theme song to compose his own little ditty for the game show. Good one.

Already the rules of this game are annoying and being made up as Mady goes along. Who gets to spin the wheel? And what happens if they both ring in at the same time? And once they're allowed to go consult with their team about the answer, then who gets to go first? Mady wings all of this, and already she's changing up the rules. Aaden is not allowed to answer first because he knocked his bell off (Why not tape the bells down with some gaffer tape? Production is sure to have some.). But Joel knocked his bell off on the first go around, as one of the girls pointed out, so how come he got to answer first last round? Stupid. You're better off getting out Pictionary, reading the rules until you understand them, and going for it. You'll have a great time, I promise.

Great, is every question going to prompt an old boring clip of something? I can't even!

At the end of the day these kids genuinely don't like playing with Kate, I believe them when they say that. Her extreme competitiveness is obnoxious, they explain. Of course it is.

Just as we all said years ago, Alexis reveals that the vast majority of these questions she has no clue about because she doesn't remember the vast majority of the things they have filmed. Mind-mouth it, Alexis! Of course she doesn't remember this shit, she was four.

Mady is favoring Cara's team, laments Kate. Shut up, Kate. Shut up, shut up, shut uppppp!

Speaking of four years old, Alexis sulks like a four-year-old after she forgets to ring the bell when she knew the answer, and Leah wins that question because she remembered to ring. Instead of Kate pulling Alexis aside and telling her to grow up, Kate assures her they are still going to win so don't worry about it.

But, what if they don't win? (Spoiler alert: they don't win) And even if they do win, that doesn't mean you shouldn't sulk because you are going to win anyway. You shouldn't sulk because it's childish and stupid. Good grief.

There's still a good 20 minutes left in this episode not even including ads, are they going to do this boring trivia the whole time? (Spoiler alert: yes) On a positive note, Collin looks happy. He's paying attention, participating, and giggling. It's kind of heartbreaking to think he's about to be sent off to an institution.

Kate's philosophy on parenting which she has said before is that she wants kids to know not everyone wins. That's all well and good, but how about teaching kids that not everything is a competition and that some things you should just let go and not worry about, one of them being a family game. Equally valuable to teach children, I propose, is, it's not worth it. Also, you don't need to "teach" kids note everyone wins. Even if you did everything you could to let them win everything, they would still encounter many times where they would lose at school or at a friend's house. They'll learn. Not everything a child learns about life needs to be micromanaged with such purpose by their parents. Let it be once in awhile.

I swear these kids have been programmed to react "it's not fair!" to everything. Alexis goes into a long explanation about how this is not fair because she can't remember any of these past events. Well, number one, her mother says they all watch the episodes all the time, so if Alexis would watch the episodes, she would know as much as anyone who was actually old enough to remember. And number two, the teams actually are fair, Alexis. Each team has three younger children on them, and one older person. Kate on Alexis's team and Cara on the other. Therefore, each team has one person who can remember that far back. Since everyone else has access to the library of episodes and could have watched them, it actually is fair. Arguably, Alexis's team has a slight advantage, because they have Kate, and these episodes go so far back even Cara is a little young to remember them all. The thing with saying something is not fair is that sometimes, it's totally warranted. But you better make sure it actually is unfair before you pull that card. Otherwise, you're just whining.

Alexis is getting herself so worked up she looks a thread away from bursting into tears. Just mind-mouth it, Alexis! Kate again reassures her they're going to win. Oh for Pete sake! At this point even that comment is trite. Even if they do, Alexis is going to feel like yeah they won but it's no thanks to me. Sheesh. That being said, some people just aren't good at trivia, at remembering random useless facts. I'm not the biggest trivia person myself. I remember big picture things more than nuances, and I forget dates and names easily even if I could tell you everything else about what happened. Eventually I'm usually able to recall most things, but I'm not able to do so under the pressure of two or three seconds to draw the information up. So, for someone that just doesn't have a knack for trivia, playing trivia games just isn't fun, I can attest. Still, in life you will now and again end up playing games you don't like. You just have to deal with it and get through it, it'll be over soon. Why doesn't Kate reassure Alexis that not everyone is good at trivia and it's okay, that there are many other things Lex excels at?

Cupcake gate was okay because the kids now laugh about it, explains Kate. Nope, the fact that you laugh later at something does not make it okay in that moment, Kate. For example, Life is Beautiful is a film about an Italian-Jewish prisoner who makes other concentration camp prisoners smile despite their absurd situation. It doesn't make the gas chambers, or shall I say holocaust centers, okay. It's just a way to cope. Does it occur to her the only way the kids can compartmentalize a very upsetting moment in their childhood is to just laugh? Strike two, say I! The kids laugh about cupcake-gate daily, claims Kate. Well, that sounds healthy.

Not the Hannah pooped thing again, let this poor child be!

Because Kate is nuts, she then proceeds to go on some random spiel about how this wasn't about winning. But she just spent the first half of this episode reassuring Lex that they would win, and, she wrote on her team shirt "Who's your winner!" so WTF! She's certifiable.

Clearly the producers put together all these questions, they are starting to get really specific and elaborate, one even has a photo they are to identify (of the turtle hatching).

Mady snaps at Kate that Kate doesn't get to call it when they can go back to their team and discuss the answer. Only Mady can call discussions. I think that's strike three!

Who said, This is awkward? Mady asks. I'm surprised I didn't remember who said that until they show the clip of Kate's staged date with Vann where as soon as she meets the poor guy, she blurts out what she is thinking, "this is awkward." Ohhh, yeah! Lol! Dating tip number one, it will be awkward on the first date, but for God sake, don't say it's awkward!

A very bizarre fight erupts, spearheaded by Leah, who says it's unfair to ask about that episode, which aired in January 2016, because they haven't seen it. I thought they all gather around the boob tube together, holding hands and singing about harmony, to watch these episodes as they air, as Kate paints the picture. Then, even more oddly, Leah blurts out several times that Kate won't let them watch. I'm confused, won't let them watch any episodes, or just the date episode? Kate denies this, saying it's on the TV, go watch it. But why would Leah say that if it had no basis in fact? Really weird exchange there with little explanation of the backstory, leaving my rather curious what that's all about. Did Kate at some point not want them to watch the dating episode, and if so, why not? Was it because the kids know how fake it was? This almost deserves a Reddit conspiracy thread.

I'm struck by the sharp contrast between Kate's contrived relationship with Vann, and Little People, Big World, where both Amy and Matt are in real relationships with new people now. I'm not sure I know how to feel about Amy's boyfriend Chris. Something about me thinks something is off there. And the kids seem a little wary too, which is important to note since they would know. He claims he's happy to be with her, but when after six months she very gently tries to press him on demonstrating a little commitment, he won't agree to anything. Does he even call her his girlfriend, because I haven't heard him say so. He's in his 50's, what is he waiting for at this point? But, I am genuinely convinced it's a real relationship, organic, would happen cameras or not. I just think Amy is going to end up terribly hurt by that guy when he decides on a whim, eh, I'm gonna move on now. In any case, because it's so real, it makes for much better T.V. than Kate's stupid blind date.

Cara's team starts to pull away, and Kate's team starts to get bored because it actually is all about winning for everyone in this room.

Kate dresses up as a clown with a pink wig and passes out popcorn like she did for one of their early birthdays. The kids find her mortifying. Kate thinks she's hilarious.

Once in awhile they show a clip that's not mind-numbingly boring, but rather interesting, this one because of its foreshadowing. In this one they show Kate engaging in a battle of wills with 5-year-old Mady, insisting that Kate must hold her hand on a decidedly not busy New York City sidewalk. Mady is not two, she is five, and perfectly capable of walking alongside her parents without having to hold their hand like a baby. But Kate insists. And what's worse, argues the point with the poor kid, giving her false hope this is a negotiation. It's that kind of repeated, tenacious refusal to give up any control over your child, that breeds a teen like Mady ten years later. Mady woke up one day, probably at age about 13 or 14, and realized she could actually be in control from now on, and it's been misery ever since.

Kate, who says she doesn't care if they win, is sulking and going on about how some question and answer was unfair. I'm too bored to try to figure out why she said that. "That's wrong!" Kate, who doesn't care about winning, gleefully shouts out when the other team misses a question. "I really wanted to win," says Kate. But she just said she didn't care! Brother, she is such a nut job.

Kate announces the prizes toward the end of the game. The winning team picks the takeout and the losers clean up. Sounds like she made that up on the fly. I know that's not that big of a deal as prizes go, but something about that feels very dysfunctional, and I think it breeds unhealthy competition, and bitterness. Why can't they just finish the game and that's it, without this unhealthy focus on winners and losers? How about decide take-out on a majority vote, or rotate who chooses the takeout fairly each time?

More dumb questions and bickering. The only thing interesting that happens is somebody says Kate thinks she's funny, but she's not. Pretty much!

Collin, who apparently has such special needs that he needs to be institutionalized, is the only one to correctly identify and name the liberty bell, in Philadelphia. He gets both the landmark and the city. Whatever, Kate. Where is he?

Cara's team wins, and Cara calls the other team "losers." Sigh.

Of note, this recap took me several weeks to finish because I broke up the chore as I had time to do it. At the beginning of the writing, the TLCgo app was doing its usual crap. But I think the interns may have tweaked the code, because today, it's running much better. It doesn't restart all over when I pause it, and the commercials don't pop up every time I try to move the slider. Thank you, interns! Finally!

It was so much more fun than she thought it could be, remarks Kate. She's said something like that before, and I find that kind of comment odd and kind of mean. Why wouldn't being with your family and talking about the fun things you've done together be just great? Why would it surprise you to have such fun with your family? Weird!

Kate, you're the only loser here.

Has Trump made racist statements? As far as I know, yes. I can't say I'm not baffled that people propelled someone like Trump in the final two(so to speak), given all I've seen from him but then I also understand that in the end, it was a situation where there were two awful candidates and everyone chose what they thought was the lesser evil.

&&&&

You said it perfectly, Roxy.

We would be having such a different conversation right now if a much stronger candidate was running. Dare I say it, Joe Biden. He's the only one I can think of in contention where this election would be like WAIT WHAT?! I would actually understand the bitterness, the visceral anger, the calls of racism. But the alternative just wasn't there. There was no there, there!

Ironically, Hillary and I have somewhat similar backgrounds starting out. Our dads worked, our moms stayed at home. Our parents raised us in a politically conservative household. We did scouts and sports, and attended protestant churches. Both of us were oldest children who grew up in the suburbs on the outskirts of a city, excelled academically and went to law school, and both of us landed in children's law, both having a strong passion for the area. She eventually left that area and the rest is history for her, I don't know what's in store for me or where I'll be at her age, certainly not as rich.

All and all, Hillary and I both had a pretty cookie cutter childhood with no great hardships in the grand scheme of things other than mom and dad were on a budget, and in my case, as I expect as hers too, I watched a heck of a lot of parents lose their jobs growing up.

So the idea that my "white privilege" or anyone else's should cause them to vote for her over somebody else, when she is equally of the same or NOW MUCH greater white privilege, is something I can't really wrap my mind around. Frankly, it sounds silly to claim such a thing when it's HER.

Back to the recap, what struck me about this episode was once again what Kate says, and reality, don't always align. She claims the kids watch these episodes over and over. But not all of them seemed to recall them. Ironically, Collin did pretty well, and a couple others seem to know them. But other than that, the kids struggled to recall episodes with some of them claiming they hadn't even seen certain ones. It felt like some of their answers were recalled from their own actual memories of the events, rather than recall of the actual episode. Bottom line I don't believe all of them sit around and watch the episodes a they come out and I also don't believe all or even most of them spend a great deal of time watching old episodes over and over, as Kate has claimed. If they had this trivia would have gone much smoother.

Does anyone remember what she tweeted about watching the dating episode together? Because Leah was ADAMANT she had not seen it.

Is there any chance that Collin is at home, has been for a long time, but Kate has been banned from showing him in any kind of social media/tv show(no public pictures, no filming).

&&&

Yes, I think it's VERY possible his service providers have insisted that if there is to be reunification, it cannot involve filming. More than likely Collin has discussed filming a great deal in therapy--it's such a huge part of his life. If anything at all about those discussions were negative, a therapist is going to deem that aspect of his life unhealthy and inappropriate to his recovery.

It does make filmed trips and things dicey though. As a therapist or other service provider, I would worry about the damage to him being left out of such things even if I thought filming was not appropriate.

That said, I don't see the harm in Kate acknowledging Collin is home but that it is in his best interest he not be filmed at this time and she appreciates everyone's patience. I think that is a much better answer than silence.

But the trips are getting shorter and shorter. Collin could stay with Jon and they could work on reunification. Would set a precedent though that TFMJG and TLC would not like.

----------

I'm not sure. I think she is caught between a rock and a hard place. If she comes out and says Collin is home but it's best for him not to film who's to say this doesn't open a can of worms and people and the media start wondering about:

1. How filming has affected Collin, since it's best for him not to film, has filming contributed to his condition, etc. For the first time, Kate would be putting filming on a negative lighting. For years she's said it's no big deal and then

2.If she's lied about that, what else is she lying about? Are the rest of the kids truly ok filming?

3.Are they leaving Collin behind to film? Kate can't possibly come off positive on that one. I'm sure most of what's left of the fanbase would be gone. What mother chooses to leave a kid behind rather than stop filming altogether.

All this to say, I'm not sure there's any way for Kate to win this one(not that she should win!).

Also, even if Collin himself hasn't put filming in a negative light, I'm sure no sane therapist would deem it in his best interest.

Admin, big thanks for this recap! And bonus points for working on it on a holiday weekend. You are hereby excused from clean-up detail, and you may choose the takeout for dinner.

TFW was only pretending the losers were going to have to clean up. Their living room was the set for that episode, which meant TLC was responsible for restoring to to
pre-filming condition. I also call BS on ordering takeout. Since there was an episode being filmed, the production company was responsible for meals -- both prep and cleanup.
In fact, if it was a 12-hour-plus filming day, TLC may have had to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Realest reality, y'all.

Tucker's Mom (#13), and why do I doubt TFW has taught her children that sometimes speaking your mind can be an awful idea? The twins are close to being adults. The kind of candor TFW is praising can get you a D from a professor, can lose you a friend or 12, and can get you fired. If I was TFW, I would start teaching M about diplomacy, and conveying your feelings without causing direct or indirect harm. That pathetic lecture she gave C about insulting his sister's hair doesn't count. He was TFW's scapegoat, and I imagine it gave her great pleasure to criticize him, while also getting credit for seeming like an attentive parent.

Again, the heavy lifting of being a mom is not of much interest to TFW.
Shopping and game shows are more her speed.

I'm not even sure which Tup that is in the photo Kate tweeted the night of the date episode. Is it Alexis drying her hair?

But Leah's comment was very specific, YOU WOULND'T LET US watch the date episode.

Why would she say that if it's not true? What is going on here?

Unfortunately the kids will have to get very used to this kind of gas lighting. They're going to yell and scream that something happened a certain way because they were there and darn well RECALL, and Kate will deny it. It's either that, or break up with her, kids.

In a large way, I'm glad that it's fairly obvious to tell that the kids don't sit around watching themselves on tv on an ongoing and regular basis.
That just breeds an unhealthy interest in themselves and their own lives.
Plus, kids aren't all that keen on reminiscing and getting all puddled up over seeing "the old days".
That's a concept that evolves as we grow older.
Kids are forward thinking. What's next? I can't wait to get older!

If TFW had the remotest clue about how to truly rebrand herself, she could've suggested they skip the trip to Target and have some fun scavenging that huge house for supplies. That would've been an opportunity for TFW to demonstrate her own creativity (*snicker*), and for each kid to contribute some ideas and creativity. Not as a competition to see who could do it best -- just fun for fun's sake.

That would've been an opportunity for TFW to demonstrate her own creativity (*snicker*), and for each kid to contribute some ideas and creativity. Not as a competition to see who could do it best -- just fun for fun's sake.

That really is a good idea. Too bad Kate has never blinked twice when it comes to wasting resources.

Fleecing 29, yes it is a pie. The filling is 1/3 blueberries, and on the other side is 2/3 strawberries. For the top crust you make wiggly stripes to go over the strawberry area and cut out stars to go over the blueberry part. Since Kate invented the Flag Cake, I figured she invented this as well when she got a few minutes to herself.

Hillary Clinton actually understands that racism is a huge problem in this country despite the fact that she is today a woman of privilege.

&&&&

There is absolutely no evidence that racism is a "HUGE" problem in this country. None. It's not 1950 anymore. The evidence is just the opposite, that true racist incidents are actually isolated and rare in 2017--it's never been more safe and secure to be a minority in this country. But the more Hilary convinces you there is a lynch mob going on all the time, the more votes she gets. Clever girl. My god, get out of your bubble. Try living in the Middle East and watch how they treat people.

Note: there are racial disparities in many areas in the US, especially the southeast where I live. Relating to violence, incarceration, illness and death even, increased rates of hiv and std infections, increased risks of cardiovascular events. There is work to be done with community policing, health education, health care. There is no easy answer to the problems communities face. And the answers need to come from the community, as well as from other successful projects in similar communities.
There is an amazing blog by a terrific bicycle rider who has started a team for youth in a housing project. Check it out.

Thanks for the recap Admin. It made me realize just how unremarkable and what a mediocre family I'm part of. Many times just sitting around the dining room table after dinner our conversation has turned into a spontaneous game of trivia. Not once have I felt the need to rush out and buy bedding to make it seem more real. Just happy time with family and friends enjoying themselves without feeling competition but with lots of laughs.

You summed it up all right. Nothing seems fun in this family. Everything escalates into a fight, or at the very least is very stressful. Someone always can't control themselves and is sulking and upset. Someone is always being mean and a bully to someone else. It's just not a pleasant or happy environment. I wouldn't want to be around it either as a child or adult. These kids will have some tough decisions to make as they become adults whether they think any of this is good for their own emotional health or that of their own families someday. The family may not be physically abusive anymore but the environment is emotionally abusive.

From Facebook Duggars: Life is more than pickles and hairspray.

Admin:

Now back to our regular Duggar scandal news.

Watch the updated video in this link to see a whole new version of the Duggar sisters' (really Jim Bob's) recent lawsuit.

Apparently, a Duggar politician friend, who has taken money from Jim Bob in 2014, helped amend the law that allowed this lawsuit to be filed. Can a new law be retroactively enforced to give Jim Bob a win in the courts? I guess it depends on how it was written but I totally doubt it. Can In Touch and the city of Springdale sue the Duggar sisters for malicious prosecution? I'm sure they can if they win this frivolous suit first.

Does this lawsuit protect children in any way? Probably not. The Duggars need to work to help children from becoming victims in the first place. Not help sex abusers keep their privacy which Josh only lost because his greedy ass parents decided to sell their lives to reality TV. The Duggars need to work on their ethics and morals because they have become damaged by anger and bitterness.

I couldn't sit through the episode but Collin did seem a bit off to me at times. Also he was always next to Kate, wasn't he? I noticed this a lot, not just in that episode. Whenever they went somewhere, if it was Kate and another adult, Collin would always be at the table between Kate and said adult. I feel like it was maybe a rule he had to follow "always stay next to mom". Very strange.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

It occurs to me I wonder if this is just how the kids behave when they are with Kate, because she allows it.

Surely there are few teachers who would tolerate such behavior. Neither would a scout leader, sports coach, other parent, pastor, Dad and other family members.

I wonder if this is a case of they just cut loose around Kate, knowing they are permitted to.

If they're truly like this all the time, in all aspects of their lives, it's going to be a tough road ahead.

3.What's more, no one wants to admit that sometimes the reverse happens. I give two examples:

&&&&

Agree with everything you said. Also, police brutality is almost ignored if the victim is white. My example is the Orange County homeless man Kelly Thomas. The beating and killing by police is on film, all the evidence is available to the public to review (I encourage you to), and it would be impossible not to conclude the police murdered him. Even though two judges said this beating was murder, the jury acquitted.

If this were a minority, there would be absolute RIOTS.

But, nope, it was pretty much Kelly's dad and a couple locals protesting who listen to KFI radio (which heavily championed the cause and gave Kelly's dad endless airtime), and that was about it. Kelly's dad is still going strong advocating for his son, to mostly deaf ears. Bet none of you have even heard the name Kelly Thomas. Kelly Thomas inconveniently doesn't fit the narrative that the RARE cases of police brutality generally has nothing to do with minorities and most of the time is just bad police officers in general. I can give you many more examples of white people getting the shit beat out of them by police, that usually warrant a footnote. RIP Kelly.

An inconvenient truth, as they say.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Can a new law be retroactively enforced to give Jim Bob a win in the courts?

&&&&

A few laws are retroactive most are not. They usually say so if they are retroactive. The idea is that everyone has a right to be on notice of what the law is, but if the law doesn't even exist yet, you can't be aware of it even if you wanted to be.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

Admin (#45), I think it's more likely that the kids who spend time with Jon will be the ones to rebel. They are quite aware of the contrast between life as a cast member in TFW'S side show, and life with a parent who treats them as individuals and lets them be heard.

The other kids -- the ones who stay at home with Mommie Dearest -- may already be victims of Stockholm Syndrome, and may never realize that their primary caregiver is toxic.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Wake the f*ck up. Go to a community meeting or two in South LA and announce that it's never been a better time to be a minority in this country and see what kind of reaction you get.

&&&&

Probably not a positive one, but no one will be able to come up with much evidence that it's terrible versus 1990, versus 1950, versus the 19th century. They just believe it. Well, that doesn't make it so. The fact that people THINK they have it bad off does not prove that they do. The ungrateful and ignorant millennial attitude toward everything their grandparents had to endure and fought for to get them to this point is absolutely disgusting. THAT was racism.

The difference between my vote based PARTLY on terrorism, is I never claimed terrorism affects a lot of people. In fact, it affects a very tiny number of people. However, we suffered three major home grown attacks during the Obama presidency and many small ones, and ISIS has grown by leaps and bounds. The growth is what was of a concern, the very real potential of ISIS expanding all the further and home grown attacks becoming more common.

There is no evidence racism has experienced that same growth, or any growth. In fact, it's in decline.

Since I saw an actual plan to combat terrorism from one candidate and not the other, and since neither candidate offered no plan to speak of to combat racism even if that was a concern of mine, the choice was actually pretty logical for many people.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

e the ones to rebel. They are quite aware of the contrast between life as a cast member in TFW'S side show, and life with a parent who treats them as individuals and lets them be heard.

I agree. There are so many possible outcomes here actually. The kids who see Jon also know there is that option there if they ever want to peace out from Kate. It would be as easy as packing a suitcase. Kids usually figure this out in their teens.

The kids that don't see Jon may, like many alienated kids, wake up one day and resent being brain washed. Resent being robbed of this relationship. THAT could be very bad. Kate made one huge mistake in raising these kids. She didn't factor in that one day they would form opinion and ideas of their own about their lives, and there is nothing she can do about it. When a child starts developing their own view of the world, sometimes there is hell to pay.

=========
Three reasons why TFW won't be on the show.

1. Mady is too old to be her partner and the younger kids can't be trusted to toe the company line.
2. TFW's favorite charity is herself and I don't think that will fly.
3. The contestants probably don't get paid for being on the show and we all know that she doesn't do anything for nothing.

There were enough organic-based ones, like Farmer Henry, Sara Snow, Half a Cow etc. Even container gardening would have been fun for the kids. For the money-savvy mom, this would have been something her fans could usefully copy after viewing.

There was the one landscaping episode which was kind of dull- they used the John Deere to transport stones from one area to another and the boys did most of the work. That was when the twins freaked out at the personalized stones Kate ordered for them. Alexis was the star of that show- interested, cooperative and polite.

NJGal51 said...

Her garden, judging by the picture, is some kind of structure enclosed by chicken wire. It looks to be divided into three sections with only two of them being used (the third section looks overgrown with weeds). It looks like she only planted around a dozen plants around the perimeter and has landscape fabric covering the rest to keep the weeds down. She put logs on it because she forgot that she had the fabric pins. With all the land that she has she could have had someone come in to till up a good sized area and had a real garden.

On second thought, I doubt his professional help, while being on board for his gardening, would nix the filming part. I bet the reason Kate doesn't let the kids watch newer episodes is because they might not like how they are being portrayed. The fights, sniping, nastiness. They might object and decide they don't want to film (out of embarrassment), and she will not allow that. Better to tell them the ugliness will be edited out and force them to be oblivious.

I recall (from Robert's book) that the family got a certain amount in per diem for each day of filming. That may be the reason they are cramming filming into as few working days as possible. They don't want to pay the extra money. I wouldn't be surprised if they filmed this whole thing in a single day. And TLC may not be providing craft services now (because of the expense), but maybe provided enough money for the Gs to order takeout. Jon once said that craft services would bring flowers, wine, etc. That would cost far more than just giving Kate $100 or so and saying, "Go order takeout". No wonder she went to go to Target rather than scrounge for supplies around the house. She's not being given all the loot she used to get. She's missing the old days.

Oh, the problems of the 1%. I

$$$

You give yourself and your ignorance away. A lot of land is not a 1% thing unless you're from a big city. Where I'm from cheap properties routinely came with several acres. In some areas it can be hard to FIND smaller parcels and zoning laws prevent land from being broken up. Indeed many people take on such properties not realizing the financial burden and can end up either in financial trouble or with just poorly maintained land. Unfortunately your lectures to those of us who actually are from the heart of America can't be taken seriously. Stop telling us about ourselves, who we are, what our financial accounts look like or the state of our hearts towards others. You know nothing.

GollyGee said...

I have a friend who bought 40 acres, 40 years ago and was to wishy-washy to bring the acreage to its full potential. He let a soybean farmer plant soybeans every so often and only make 900.00 at harvest.

I told him after he bought it, plant some black walnut trees. Everybody else has pecan trees and bw's are much more expensive. Nah. He could of had a beautiful grove of trees, 40 years later.

I called him several years ago and told him that a farmer nearby did an interview with the local paper. He was a organic farmer. He said that he grew organic baby arugula and bagged it up along other vegetables and drove an hour to the big city and sold his organic baby arugula for $50 a pound.

He said, Your lying. I said, Oh no, I'm not. It is in black and white in the paper! Ok, have a nice day!

Also, generational disadvantages are not the same thing as racism. I'm not stopping anyone from going to college and neither is anyone else. In fact, affirmative action is legal and gives a leg up in the application process.

What may stop people, however, is that they need to stay home and help out with the younger children, or they can't afford tuition and don't want to burden themselves and their families with a loan, or they don't have transportation to get to college, or no one in their family has gone to college before and it's scary to do so or not culturally normal to do so. Same thing stops a white person. That's not "racism." Society has given every opportunity for everyone to go to college white black red yellow if they choose to do so and if you're a minority you qualify for scholarships and affirmative action that whites don't. But society cannot do much about someone's individual circumstances and choices that may hold them back, and to suggest that's racism is really outrageous. What exactly is society to do when a minority chooses not to go to college because he feels he needs to stay home and help support his siblings. Enlighten me.

By the way, the college rates for blacks is on a meteoric rise, DOUBLING since the 90s. But gee to listen to some candidates, the media talk, you would think we're living in the Jim Crow days.

These days that will get Mady elected President of the United States. What reason does she have to be "diplomatic" or, more on point, honest and polite? She's been shown over and over again that being a jerkass saying cruel things and lying help a lot. People cheer it.

&&&&

Most jobs still require you to hold your tongue. What's more, what about relationships? If she talks to a boyfriend like that she'll be dumped. He's not going to care how some political talks, he's going to care about how someone he loves treats him. A few assholes fall through the cracks and rise to the top, but you also tend to see real consequences to that, like failed relationships and estranged children. Maybe they made the deal, but their wife left them.

I think comparisons to a few curt politicians is silly. That's not how normal society functions. That's a very strange subset and not reflective of the real world. Try talking like Hillary or Trump at your job and see what happens. Plus at the end of the day even if someone is being a smart-ass, I can guarantee you dollars to donuts they are typically good to their staff and fair to people they are making deals with and that some schtick they pull on TV isn't how things work behind the scenes.

Bottom line there is just no doubt how Mady behaves is going to seriously hurt her one day.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Oh, my gosh. Can you imagine the hell she would inflict on those kids when they returned home, and you know darn well that she'd send the swat team to Jon's to retrieve them.

I think the idea is when they come to that decision, they're not GOING to return back to Kate's. It's going to be for good. Therefore they're not going to care what hell she wants to give them because they're not going to be back to get it. Missy Francis went through that, at the end of the day she left her mother for good and therefore her mother lost all leverage, since she no longer wanted to be with her.

Unless Mady somehow lands her own reality tv show or is part of one, her rudeness, surly demeanor and airhead act isn't going to serve her well.
She'll be on a meteoric rise to the middle.

How do you know that behind the scenes and at school Mady isn't a very pleasant hardworking person? What is the reason for her to be when she has tons of roll models who are vicious imbeciles and still end up powerful, rich, and celebrated?

&&&&

If you look farther upthread from I think one or two days ago, I actually posted that it's entirely possible the kids only act like this with Kate because she's the only one who lets them get away with it. So yes you're right, and let's hope, they might only be acting like this with Kate.

Bad people have always been celebrated. Throughout history, from Jesse James to Robert E. Lee to more recently, Michael Jackson, a documented deviant sexually attracted to little children, Bill Cosby, and Casey Affleck, who was given the Academy Award after he and his crew repeatedly harassed and pretty near sexually assaulted some women crew (talk about hypocrisy there--absolutely no outrage over that stunt from the Hollywood left). Bad people and society's turning the other cheek to their misdeeds has never been an excuse for kids to be the same before and it won't be now. Another myth, that suddenly America is celebrating people you probably wouldn't like in real life. Not so, we always do that. It's the American way.

What's the point of going to Harvard if you can't get a good job after you graduate? www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/03/06/elite-college-degrees-give-black-graduates-little-advantage-job-market

"A white candidate with a degree from a highly selective univerty, the paper suggests, receives an employer response for every six résumés he or she submits. A black candidate receives a response for every eight."

*****

I read all about this study when it came out, and it has gotten heavy criticism, because they judged it based on responses to "black names" on resumes, which last I checked, don't prove one is black.

I suppose you could say they are rejecting them based on "black names" or you might just say they are rejecting them based on unusual names--an indication someone is too much of a free thinker, or from a hippie or liberal background. Something is very important to connect here--You have to understand these old law firms and how they work. They scream conservative. These are big wig firms looking for tradition and no one outside the box--white or black. You better put on panty hose or see the door. They will happily take a black person if they are qualified, but it helps to get a foot in the door to look stuffy and conservative, right down to your name. (As I'll go into later, not for me, white or black) In fact, the firms DID call a good majority of the black resumes offered, just not QUITE as many as the traditionally white ones. The differences were almost within the margin of error given he only sent in 1,000.

Here's why he needed a third "control" group for unusual names. For instance if I submit a resume to a stuffy firm, indicating my name is "Rocket" or "Apple" neither of which indicate white or black but are still unusual, I wonder if I am more likely to get a response than the David or Susan next to me. Bet not. My background is too liberal, free-thinking. Not a good fit out of the gate. I'll get some calls, just not as many as if my name were Susan.

Since the researcher, although well meaning, did not control for simply "unusual" names, his experiment proves nothing.

I look at every study critically no matter what the subject, and the glaring holes in this one are all over the place. To have a true comparison study, one must submit identical resumes to firms with identical names, but have one have clear indicators they are black outside of just speculation from their name (you could easily do it by putting Black Honor Society on the resume) and one with clear indicators they are white (KKK club, I guess?). Only then can you start throwing out accusations employers are rejecting "black" resumes. I would probably suffer the same resume fate if I went to Harvard--I'm not one of the elite club either and my resume does show that. My name is pretty neutral--I've seen people of all races and religions with it, however, it's obvious from my resume I'm a public school gal with small town tastes. Not surprisingly, none of the big firms were ever interested in me, but then, I wasn't interested in them either. The fake applicants are doing themselves a favor. Boutique firms (that aren't so darn snobby and cutthroat only accepting people named David or Byron from conservative backgrounds)--or public interest law is much more rewarding.

So the lesson in this is if you are parent, open up the baby names book from 1950 and pick something from that list. Or you could tell the stuffy law firms to kiss off and you go ahead name your kid what you like--I wouldn't want my D'Shawn there anyway.

It's so weird! Wasn't there also a sister on Family Matters who just disappeared without a trace?

Or maybe they'll try to replace him somehow--same character, different actor.

This would all be funny if it weren't a real little boy. Suddenly it's a different story when it's a reality show.

I am surprised the way they handled it. Mentioned in the first couple episodes, then never again. I really think TLC is counting on most people being casual viewers who can't tell the kids apart really and can't count to eight and notice there's only 7. This is a strategy, make no mistake. How they handled this was meticulously planned. There was an executive sitting around somewhere who actually said, let's mention him in the first few episodes then never again.

You know, you may be correct about this being an episode. And if it is--yeah, she'd be really ticked off about it. She would expect a shiny, new greenhouse to be built for her "veges", and all she got was some chicken wire wrapped around sticks. And instead of a vast array of organic veges, she got just a few plants, and one section of her garden wasn't even weeded for further use.

If this is not an episode, then you have to wonder what they're going to film. The same, tired old story lines that they have already done over and over just aren't working too well for them.

No one made the children do the things that got them suspended, ACLU. Many were for zero tolerance clothing policies. Any student can understand a clothing policy and follow it. It's not the teacher's fault children chose not to. Other factors can have a huge impact on the suspensions rates. Minority families are statistically bigger, and statistically have more single parent families. Those can be a big factor in a child's behavior, as there is a direct correlation to when a parent does not have as much time to spend with the child or is not around at all, and a child's behavior. A minority parent is more likely to be poor, and may be working 14 hour days because of it, which means no one is necessarily home in the morning to tell their child to comply with the clothing policy. It also means no one might be around to make sure the kid is hanging out with good kids, and not the crowd that is going to get them suspended.

Let's not go after our fine teachers now implying they are racist for enforcing their rules. How NASTY and without any proof. Typical of the ACLU.

There were also higher suspension rates for disabled kids--that's easily explained. Disabled kids can often have corresponding developmental issues which can lead to greater difficulty following rules, thus, higher discipline rates. I really don't think we should start accusing teachers of picking on kids in wheelchairs. Let's not go there without any proof. Of course, they went there.

I don't mind Zach and Tori, at least they have real jobs, and they seem kind, but at the same time they are drinking the TLC koolaid. They've been sitting on this information since she was 34 weeks pregnant waiting for the People exclusive and the payout. This is their first major act of child exploitation. You saved up your son's likely very emotionally and physically painful circumstances for a payout. Kind of gross.

I also get the heebie jeebies when I think about TLC execs who are going to be much happier this baby is a dwarf as opposed to a normal, boring average sized person. They could be filming little Jackson into adulthood.

On a positive note, I bet this pisses Kate off. Little People is on a revival now, and Jackson being a little person just gave it another giant shot in the arm. Little People warrants a lot more promotion and consistent episodes lately because of the baby boom. She's second fiddle by a long shot. They got a People shout out, she didn't.

Jackson is absolutely adorable. And I can barely tell he's a dwarf.

It's not like the show ended for everyone, or her character died because that's the story, or she at least got a nice warm send-off final goodbye. It was just, boom, you're gone.

She literally got booted because there just wasn't room for her anymore because another character was more popular and they needed more air time for him.

I think Life After Tomorrow might be on YouTube. It's quite a good documentary, and the women say they feel life peaked at age 12 then they were 'nobodies." Except for Sarah Jessica Parker and a few others, most of the girls did not have amazing showbiz careers after Annie. Once they grew over the requited height limit, they were 'discarded' and a smaller girl was put into the red dress. It really affected many of them, their self-esteem and confidence.Worth watching.

There's nothing fancy about a mozzarella, tomatoe, basil salad drizzled with olive oil (I also like a little balsamic on mine) but restaurants can charge more of they call it a caprese salad. It's like her fish en papillote or as she always said "fish in paper"... if it's got a fancy name and costs more it must be better. I wonder if she's going to claim to make her own mozzarella.

Thanks for the information about this documentary.
Look at Tiger Woods, in the news again for all the wrong reasons.
Tiger was a child wonder, whose meteoric rise in the world of golf led to fame, success and an embarrassment of riches, spurred on by his father.
Now, he's washed up at the ripe old age of 41. His life is scandal ridden and his body is shot.
His recent DUI seems to be related to prescription drugs, and it's not surprising. He's been pushing his body for decades and after so many surgeries, you just run the risk of addiction.
Not to mention the access to pills someone like him could have.

I wouldn't want his life for all the F-U money and half billion dollar yachts.

Yes and yes. It's morbidly fascinating to see the cycle of abuse be passed down to the next generation.

Parents exploit their minor children on reality tv. Those children grow up and have their own children to exploit on reality tv.

The difference with reality TV child stars is that they are not playing a part. To continue the Annie

Ugh. The Jeremy and Audrey thing annoys me to no end. In my experience, people who state over and over again how great their relationship is, usually don't have a great relationship to begin with.

As for Zach and Tori, and their "normal" jobs - she's a teacher, so not that big of a salary (well, supposedly that's how it is in the US. In Canada, most teachers are paid low 6 figures with 10 yrs experience). He coaches soccer - again, not that much $$. But they have money to travel, buy vehicles, house, etc. That's all from the show. And I will go out on a limb and predict she won't go back to work because she won't need to.

Sigh - poor, poor C! What a colossal tragedy! It almost makes me cry to think how he's been forgotten and left aside by both parents. We know Kate is a cold hearted bitch, but come on Jon! Go out and find him and insert yourself into the situation!

I saw the promo of Zachs wife at the drs. office getting a sonogram and the drama music was playing and they were going back and forth, normal or dwarf. Yes, I am surprised too. I guess the money is just to hard to turn down.

On LHOTP, the episode where Charles and Mr. Edwards family travel many miles to dig for gold. The greediness, horrible way people were treating people over gold was very sad. At the end at the church service, Charles got up to speak and he asked if they asked God to help them strike it rich? A lot of people held up their hands.

Charles told them that after being here and seeing what he had seen that he prayed for God to take away the desire of wanting to pan for gold. He then said he was taking his family back home.

Zach trust TLC. TFW trust TLC to keep her in the same lifestyle that she has become accustomed to. It is such a shame!

And, she will refuse to co-parent with him. Which makes me think ahead to the days that Jon and TFW are grandparents. She'll probably make that a nightmare for the kids in refusing to be at family events like birthdays for the kids if Jon is there. It's interesting how people react differently to something like reality T.V. Just like how people react different to winning the lottery.

Some people seem to treat reality T.V. as just another pot to stir, and the rest of life, and work, continues on like normal. Matt Roloff is like that--he keeps on trucking with all his hair brained ideas. It matters not to him he's got a show going strong. His mind is still churning and he's still cooking up all kinds of projects, many of them that generate revenue. He hasn't changed a bit.

Some lottery winners don't want to stop working, would be bored if they did, and feel without purpose.

But some never want to work again and once they get a taste of not working a "normal" job they can't bring themselves to ever go back to the 9-5 grind, the commute, the sack lunch. Same goes reality TV. Kate's in that crowd--she'd die if she had to go back to that schedule. Just die.

I could be wrong, but I think people with good work ethic, and those who truly don't value money as the end all be all, are those who don't let some silly windfall change their lives so drastically. Mature people who see the bigger picture see the value in working at least a little bit even when one doesn't HAVE to. They understand there is more to work than input-output. Work in return for money. Work has more value than that for those who are able to see it.

Wow our president is single handedly responsible for racism (which last I checked occurred long before he was even born). How then exactly do you explain the racist comments in Britain about Harry's half black girlfriend? Trump made them do it? I didn't realize the British people cared who our leader is or could be galvanized by him to be mean to Harry. I know people love to make things fit their narrative and explain away anything they disagree with as mere racism but the more I watch you struggle to do it in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary the more ridiculous you look. You're being sheeple, and your leaders are fake beheading presidents. Face it, your lot can be just as bad and you know it. I have to say, the Kathy Griffin stunt was perfect timing for proving the point. Oops. You are not so innocent anymore.

I think the point people are making is that the people who are upset about Griffin’s appalling image are people who didn’t bat an eyelash at eight years of vile racist imagery of Obama being lynched or burned in effigy. It’s the hypocrisy, silly.
Let me also point out that unlike the right-wing who are unapologetic about the (often murderous) crap they spewed about Obama and HRC, Griffin realized she fucked up and apologized for what she did.

Huh? That is not true. I never saw any of that what are you talking about? And certainly not from a mainstream celeb like Kathy Griffin. Just the opposite happened when Obama was president, he got away with just about everything including making fun of special needs children, because people were so afraid to criticize and be labeled a racist. The hypocrisy here is if that were Obama's head there would actually be hell to pay. The hypocrisy here is that for all the pearl clutching from the left about racism and inciting violence, they are just as bad. The fact that this act is not racism is irrrelevant (incidentally, a lot of things people claim are racism actually are not either. For instance, it's not on its face racist to cut budgetary items that happen to be dipped into by more minorities, no matter how much you disagree. A policy of more saving and less spending and more reliance on the private sector to provide charity and the free market to work is not "racist", it's a core proven ecomonic theory) the point is it was violent, nasty and uncalled for and it was the pot calling the kettle black. If you're going to complain about the morals and values of the other side, make sure your own side is pretty squeaky clean first. It's not and never has been. It's full of womanizers, rapists, violence, corruption, RACISTS too and unchecked ambition. Yet they have the nerve to say a handful of folks who have probably always been racist are racist because of a decidedly not racist president. Lol.

How the left has successfully labeled half of America racist. Can we sue? https://pjmedia.com/blog/the-sordid-history-of-liberals-calling-republicans-racists/

I actually think the internet has played a huge role in some of the things that are happening, good and bad.

The internet has been a fast and simple way to bring people together. Before if you liked Star Wars, you could hang out in your basement and dress up and watch the movies. Now you can find thousands of like-minded people and have meet-ups and feel like you're not alone.

Same goes for racism and terrorism. When people develop the false perception that because they have now made contact with a handful of people who share their interest and agree with them, their mutual interest is now okay and mainstream, things can get scary. Has nothing to do with who is standing at what podium somewhere.

Also I am scratching my head --if racism was so bad toward Obama, that really pokes a hole in the theory racism is suddenly so bad under Trump. You can't have it both ways. Either Trump galvanized racism or he didn't. He can't galvanize something that was always there. (Hint, it was always there)

There will always be bad people and racists out there, sorry. There will also always be people with poor judgment full of hypocrisy. The Kathy Griffins will continue on too. But the idea that one side is more righteous than the other truly is laughable.

It almost sounds like their budget got blown or something. Perhaps they're at the end of the month, and couldn't afford the payout necessary for a good cover. Easier to pay the photographer 2,000 bucks for a couple Jennifer Garner photos and move on with your life.

The payout for the Roloff baby couldn't be THAT much in retrospect. 10-20k tops, I'd peg it at.
