A reality star's daughter breaks her silence: I was 'exploited, 'powerless without a voice'

One reality T.V. kid steps into adulthood, and introspection: 'Excess debris created by a produced, manipulated, pseudo-reality universe.'

Says Real Housewives daughter Christie Staub in this chilling account (and big foreshadowing):
  • My mother's storyline was edited and produced, placing her in scenarios to achieve a desired outcome. She wouldn't normally be involved in these scenarios; they were dictated by the producers, and they just told my mom where to show up for filming. In season one, my mother didn't expect this to happen. These were the early days of reality shows. In 2006, The Hills was in its first season, and the Real Housewives franchise had yet to become a household name. Today, reality stars are savvy, but a decade ago, talent lacked a frame of reference. Other than Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, my mother had never seen a reality show. Just be myself, she thought. Little did she know that myself is how the producers choose to present you. Every story arc needs an antagonist and a protagonist—that is what creates the conflict and resolution, i.e. the drama.

  • Imagine if all of the arguments you've had in your life were filmed by a stranger, and they took out the worst things you said, edited it together, and then presented the footage on TV to define your character. Would you say that characterization was accurate? Anything that is produced, and edited in this manner, is fictitious by default, but unlike an actor, my mother didn't have the advantage of hiding behind a character, not to mention that the reality forms a perception that is impossible to overcome when the viewers aren't aware of what goes down behind the scenes. The producers had the power to manipulate my mother in anyway they pleased to increase ratings. When the second season ended, my mother decided to leave the show. The network portrayed her decision as her getting fired, but she left to save her life and her kids.

  • Even now, all these years later, people see me as a character created by a producer. They see me as the daughter of an infamous reality show prostitution whore. They may not have called me garbage like they called my mother, but that's how they made me feel. They took away my name and my voice. My name is Christine Staub, and I will no longer be the excess debris created by a produced, manipulated, pseudo-reality universe. I will never again be a character defined by unethical producers, and exploited by networks all over the world. I am no longer a child, powerless without a voice.

When she talked about her mother leaving the show and how it was about protecting her children--but spun another way, that reminded me of Jon leaving the show. He has said over and over that though he was personally growing weary of the show, the crux of it/turning point was about making sure the children didn't have to go through a divorce on TV and what that could do to them. Yet that reasonable, credible explanation doesn't seem to stick. TLC and others have succcessful spun it in an entirely different and negative light.

From previous post. I don't believe Kate lied about pcos. The doctor requires blood work and an ultradound to prescribe fertility treatment. It would be like someone just telling their doctor they're a diabetic, so give me some insulin.
Also infertility is different from being sterile. I have pcos and became pregnant without drugs.

I'm not surprised at all. TLC is scum and they don't care right from wrong. As long as they're making money, they will use their stable of fame whores.
I hope the Duggars fall on their faces.

If the doctor improperly diagnosed her based upon her saying what her symptoms were and did not run tests, then that would be a scandal indeed. As far as there may have been a pregnancy when she was a teen, some women with PCOS can get pregnant. Lots of speculation but no proof. Nothing would surprise me, though, anymore with her.

JR your comments are wrenching. I have a dear friend who is a nurse. She is approaching retirement. She says almost exactly what you said.

I have a nephew who manages the ER in a major metropolitan area. A highly successful ER with a stellar reputation. He started out so young and fresh and willing. I have watched him become skeptical and harsh and almost without compassion. He admits that he will have to change medical arenas sometime soon regain his balance.

He cannot change what is broken and he cannot peacefully live with what going wrong in emergency care. He commented that 77% of the care they administer is to non-paying patients. Those people have arrived in the ER with sniffles or upset tummies or too much alcohol. He says he has heard every crazy story you can imagine from someone trying to score some drugs. His staff is overworked. Patients who need real ER care have to wait too long.

His stories are sad to tragic.

Tucker's Mom said...

Direct patient care is taxing enough, but when you add the fact that the system is pretty much broken and abused, the toll on workers is tremendous.
There are lots of nurses in my family and none is still doing floor care. Most are in pharma right in Kate's neck of the woods.
They have great careers. All moms with kids too. Go figure!

There are many women like your friend. Pcos is not the only reason for wanting fertility treatments.
IIRC the point has been made that Katie had been married recently and had not been trying to get pregnant for very long. Who knows what she told the doctor or why he agreed to fertility treatments. He's bound by confidentiality.
I think what's being suggested is that given Katie's demonstrated history of lying, pcos could be the story she's put out for public consumption. I'll add my opinion that her story about "wanting just ONE more" is another of her lies.

reader said...

Wow. I had no idea fertility drugs were just handed out without blood tests, physical exams or ultrasounds. I'm grateful my doctor was determined to find out why.
There can be lots of reasons for infertility. Pcos patients have increased risk for diabetes and heart disease.
And I am certain Kate has pcos. I believe at least one of her sisters does too.

I think Kate has been and continues to be horrible towards Jon and in her treatment of the children. I think fear and greed control her.
I do not subscribe to the belief that everything she says is a lie, or that everything she does is evil.
I seem to continually get into disagreements with many here who think there is nothing redeeming about the woman. I have to question their honesty and motivation.

To some extent, I agree with this, and have often said that many times the nit-picking goes just a bit too far. That said, though, there are locals here, myself included who have had dealings up close and personal with her and find her not evil nor despicable, but greedy, disgusting and without a care for anyone or anything other than money and herself. I don't hate her; quite the contrary. There are times when I really do pity her because she just can't see the forest for the trees, and has no idea what she is doing to her kids, all for fame and fortune. I think that this is what so many find frustrating about her, and therefore it comes across as hatred. There is no doubt that she has a personality disorder, mental health issues going on, has never matured, and her failure to recognize that there is a problem makes it even more difficult to understand this woman.

I forgot to mention that I've seen what she did to Jon and how she and TLC treated him, and that was deplorable. Her obsession to always need to be in control is alarming.

While I don't hate her, I do find many of the things she has done to be hateful, as well as vindictive. She has alienated them from their father, and I do believe that is out of spite for his choice to remove himself from filming.

Localyocul said...

I understand Christie's frustration about "editing." For Christie, she sees her mom every day and knows a side of her that she did not see on the show. She also was not present for some of the thigns seen on the show. I think she has a point in that it was upsetting to her to see a side of someone she did not know on the show, someone she feels was "edited".

For me, it doesn't change the fact that you said those things. It may be true you are a wonderful person all the other times you aren't filmed and were heavily edited but those things DID happen.

The greater point for Christie though I think is that the mother she knows was not who she saw on TV, and she found that emotionally upsetting. I think it's a fair point. It's her MOM and it's upsetting for a child or young adult who naturally feels protective of them and who they know them to be.

Wonder how many times Kate has lobbied Mark Burnett to get on Survivor or Amazing Race? Maybe she hasn't at all because neither show is known for including luxurious accomodations or being able to coast thru tasks without penalty i.e. losing or being voted off the island. She must be desperate to get her mug on a TV show besides her TLC specials.

Maybe the reason for all the filming this winter is because the Duggars (at least the younger female ones) are filming and poised for a comeback. Soon there will be enough episodes that TLC can run those 24/7.

Ok if one believes in unflattering editing. If you are an adult and sign up for that, your choice but Kate Gosselin signs for her kids who have no reasoning skill sets yet. I see from articles how they are "editing" Maddie. As a mother, there is no amount of money in the world that I would accept for that trade off of my child's self esteem and psyche. Unfortunately her children's "edited" behavior is fodder for the entertainment of strangers. Seems extremely unhealthy to me.

&&&&

That's exactly right. To me it's kind of irrelevant whether an "edit" is fair or not to who a person really is. The point being that an adult can consent to it but a child isn't old enough to consent to being "edited."

Mady's edit may be perfectly fair and a good representative of who she really is. And Mady cannot deny that she said the things she said. But Mady might not see it that way. I doubt Mady sees herself as a brat as she is being portrayed. All I could think of is Mady when I read this article and wonder if Mady might wake up one day and be very upset by her edit as Christie was.

I also think adults are more emotionally able to brush off any apparent negative edits. Adults, generally, are more sure of themselves and more stable than a teen or young adult. Something that might mortify a teen, an adult is capable of just laughing at. It's an uneven playing field because of different levels of emotional maturity. There is just no question in my mind this is a terrible consequence of reality TV for children and I think Christie is absolutely spot on about the problem with it.

One of the most interesting parts of the reality story at the top of the page is the family was on the show for 2 years. And the daughter was not an infant/toddler when the show began. The Gosselin kids have been on tv for over 10 years now I think. The twins would have few memories without it and the younger kids none. They had that one yr off after Kate Plus 8 was canceled and that's it. Everything is wrapped up in the show: their house, vacations, birthdays, holidays, health care. For some of these kids it will be much worse.

They aren't. Any reputable physician would conduct tests and rule out various reasons for infertility. There are a lot of other factors that can lead to infertility. Just being in mid-thirties or older can make conceiving more difficult, and, because there is a shorter window of opportunity, infertility drugs are often prescribed. However, it is doubtful that a couple in their twenties would be prescribed drugs after such a short period of trying, without some kind of diagnosis.

I don't hate Kate but I can't stand her. She's just so unlikable. I can't think of any redeeming qualities.

Even looking at the videos of her and Jon when they got engaged makes me think it wasn't the money and fame that created this evil woman. She had that fake phony voice, all soft and sweet. She doesn't speak like that. And how she acted when he was recording her at Disney World. I've never seen someone so self-absorbed.

She's mean and nasty and selfish. The way she treats her kids, especially the boys, and Collin in particular makes me ill. I can't think of any redeeming qualities in that woman.

Medical care is a tough subject for me. I have a number of serious medical problems. I have been lucky enough to have a lot of really wonderful doctors. They all work hard but seem to like being doctors. A lot of mine are at a teaching hospital. The highest stress doctor in my world is transplant surgeon. They rotate in and out as needed. They go do more teaching or do other surgery after they burn out.

ER is a different animal. I only go there when I am in very bad shape. And when I'm feeling that bad, the wait can be horrendous. I am lucky and have access to a few different hospitals/ERs but the hospitals are different levels of care. I've found the smaller hospitals aren't prepared to help me. Someone needs to come up with a solution for the uninsured patient problem with people coming to the ER for a blood pressure med refill. The inner city clinics around here have mostly closed. I am most worried about the crackdown on pain meds. I know so many with difficult chronic pain. I try not to use many pain meds but when I need them I need them. Those of us with multiple conditions need access. It's really tough.

Ex Nurse (27) Thank you. Was beginning to think I'd lost my mind. I've never met anyone who could just walk into a doctor's office, tell the doctor she couldn't get pregnant, and then walk out with fertility treatment. I belonged to a support group for pcos, we all had been through similar experiences, exams, blood work, ultrasounds, diagnosis, a visit with the fertility doctor, and then if interested and if one could afford it - fertility treatment. And some including myself became pregnant without drugs. I would travel to Wayne to see a specialist from Univ. of Penn. The initial interview was involved.
Lots of locals, the region continues to grow. Stories and rumors about the family continue, much less now. Good and bad, on both sides.

Jeanne, I understand. Far from perfect, Obamacare is the only solution for many as my husband and I anticipate a change in our situation later this year. It terrifies me when some politicians say they will abolish it but offer no alternative.

Back to Kate, I am convinced several of the kids would not film if they had a CHOICE, but it's all or nothing with TLC. I believe they are made aware by Kate that filming is responsible for their lifestyle, so there is pressure to conform. As far as Mady, she is definitely been cast as the foil to Kate. Always has been outspoken, bitter, etc. She has been given free reign during filming to let loose because it is controversial. Is she aware of this? Of course. It's during filming she can let those angry emotions out without penalty. Shame on Kate and shame on TLC for using that child to boost ratings.

Well yes of course not. Normally.

But let's be real. You can get just about any drug you want without an exam if you know how to get it. Especially if you have a line to Mexico or Canada. It takes a bit of know-how and you must be savvy and discreet, but it happens.

And, there are some US doctors that will hand out some pretty powerful drugs with minimal exams. Urgent care type places are notorious for it as long as your story is credible and you have a history. Not saying fertility drugs necessarily. But I got some powerful prescription pain killers at urgent care once simply by telling the doctor, truthfully of course, that I had a history of kidney stones and was having another one and didn't want to drive an hour into Los Angeles for x-rays. He found my rendition credible and wrote the prescription, no questions asked. It occurred to me that I could have lied about all that and successful got the prescription just like that.

I am not in any way implying that's what Kate did. I have no idea about that. But, if a woman wanted to, she could get fertility drugs without an exam. I'm sure it's happened! Probably not because someone was trying to have six babies at once--but more for financial reasons. Skipping all the costly exams and tests and going straight for the drugs.

Have you looked at private plans? There's lots of other alternatives, many of them very affordable. Right after college before getting a job that would have insurance I bought a Blue Cross plan to protect me. Great coverage, low price, and when I actually had to use it, no hassle. She's as aware as a 15 year old can be. It will sink in much deeper when she is Christie's age. She will have more mature, adult thoughts about it. I fear there is a very good chance she will feel deep resentment about it, and that's scary.

I'm more in the "I have no idea, but anything is possible" camp. Some things I just think we'll never really know for sure. But a difference of opinion here is pretty common and no reason to leave!

At the end of the day does it really matter how she got these six kids? They're here, whether she got them ethically or not. What she's done with them after conception is more what I'm concerned about.

Admin, the private plans are for catastrophic illness, at least they were a few years ago. Before Obamacare allowed a child to stay in a parent's plan until 26, I shopped for a plan for her after graduation from grad school until she got a job. Not sure if they can still do this, but then you got no coverage for pre-existing conditions plus I paid plenty of money out of pocket for medications. I only paid the premiums for a private plan in case she ended up hospitalized because otherwise I found the coverage pretty worthless considering she had several pre-existing conditions.

Now, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, there are. That was one of the major changes to health care under the act. I heard a heartwarming story on NPR yesterday. There was a wounded veteran who wasn't able to
get his wife pregnant, and they were upset because his military benefits wouldn't cover IVF. But their community rallied to support them, and they were able to have twins! The kids are now 5, and the dad talked about rigging up a ball with elastic so even from his wheelchair he could help his son with batting practice. It was very touching, and brought up an issue I'd never thought of regarding veterans: the loss of the ability to have a family due to physical injury.

I am NOT saying that's what happened or that it would be ethical, just questioning if it is possible.

At this point, though, is it important how she got the children? The thing is, they were born, and she is milking that multiple birth and using them as commodities.

I think that's very possible and have had experience with doctors handing things out based on me merely describing symptoms as long as they feel you're credible. I forgot what drug it was but I got some kind of serious appetite stimulant/acid reflux from my doctor based on just an office visit chat. I have no idea if that would extend to fertility drugs.

*******************************
Could you elaborate? Sincere question, I'm curious what the locals' experiences with her have been. I know I would be tempted to tell her where to go or would avoid any interaction with her at all.

((

It wasn't a personal one on one interaction. It was the summer of 2008 and my friend dragged me to Solanco High School to see Jon and Kate speak. My friend is an evangelical Christian. I didnt have much of an opinion on TFW at the time other than I thought she was a bitch to Jon. However, right before this, my sisters friend had vacationed at OBX right near them (it was the year they were down for the Fourth of July) and said Kate was a total bitch to everyone around. Also in the magazines were pics of Jon and Kate's Hawaii vow renewal that summer, and rumors were around that they were buying a new house.

Anyway, she gave her talk and it was very heavy about God providing for them, etc. She claimed Jon's boss had fired him to avoid covering the kids for health insuarnace. Jon didn't say a word. She said he preferred to let her do the talking. Toward the end of the talk, they passed around a plate for "the kids". I couldn't believe it. My friend, whose husband was in and out of work at a factory, was going to give them money. I said, have you ever been to Hawaii? Are you buying a new home? Then, afterword, my friend wanted to try and meet them but in order to do so you had to buy a picture to bring up for them to autograph.

I now think the reason Jon didn't talk is because he was over the whole marriage, grifting, etc. And my hunch that they reall didn't need the money was true. In fact, after that is when I think I found GWOP

Localyokul, of course I am not accusing you of lying. My guess is that you probably don't have all of the information as to whether any testing was done to pinpoint the problems and rule out contributing factors like PCOS. There are so many different moving parts when it comes to conceiving and carrying to full term, and medication will not correct all of them. A reputable doctor would do a thorough assessment, which will include blood tests, ultrasounds and other assessment tools.

I don't think that anyone other than Kate, Jon, family members or her physicians would have the information to determine what, if any, tests were done. Reader posted that it's a fact that Kate has PCOS. If this is true, how were these facts obtained? Personal knowledge? Access to files?

A reputable doctor certainly would do testing, but in Kate's case, I would think that, given her ability to manipulate, she could find a way around that.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't think so. According to a legal site I found:
The Department of Health and Human Services can only enforce HIPAA-related penalties against "covered entities" as they are defined by the regulations. The regulations define covered entities as healthcare providers, health plans and healthcare clearinghouses who engage in any number of electronic transactions. A healthcare provider under HIPAA is a person or company that furnishes, bills or is paid for health care. This definition is fairly broad and encompasses not only hospitals and physicians, but also includes chiropractors, dentists, optometrists, hospitals, schools, nonprofit organizations that provide some healthcare services, and even government agencies.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So it doesn't seem to me that it would be a violation unless Reader is one of the covered entities.

&&

At least for me, conspiracy theories are almost always all in good fun!

Here's the thing. It's true that people have gamed the medical system before. Usually, it's to get drugs they are addicted to. Vicodin, morphine, things like that. Doctors and other medical personal are only human, they see dozens of patients a day and it's conceivable some things can and have slipped through the cracks.

So could the same happen for fertility drugs? Well absolutely. I just don't know if Kate was able to pull that off.

Obviously, normal protocol for anything as serious as infertility would NORMALLY involve lots of tests and appointments and exams. But the fact that there is a normal procedure for how to do things doesn't mean someone cunning can't get around it. You can't say with a straight face that can't happen.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Really? Even when they're at the expense of another, even if it's someone you don't like

&&&&&

The poster simply said sometimes they are fun. Not all conspiracies are at the expense of others or hurt people.

You detest ALL conspiracy theories? What if they turn out to be the truth, as quite a lot have? For instance, the Iraq war, the weapons that never existed, was pretty much a conspiracy, most people admit that now. Should that not have been exposed because it was once just a wild conspiracy theory?

This is America, there is freedom of speech here, and exploring all possible alternatives to a story is how we ultimately get to the truth. Obviously with someone like Kate a conspiracy theory is probably going to turn out to be nothing and just silly, but I would never tell someone not to talk something out or explore other explanations.

I roll my eyes at conspiracy theories like most people but once in awhile someone comes along with a different side to the story that needs to be able to be heard without reproach. Because that person is sometimes right.

I don't loathe conspiracy theories. I loathe anything or anyone that impedes us from getting to the truth. Kate is a truth blocker, one reason I'm not a fan.

This is the thing, Kate used her fertility "miracle" to take money from people. If people want to discuss whether she fraudulently got fertility treatments and anything else about her scam collecting money from good church goers, have at it. There was money involved here, and people DID get hurt--those who gave away money under false pretenses. If she had never discussed her fertility or used it to collect cold hard cash, I might understand why it's not relevant.

But if Kate told a neighbor, a friend, or if Kate told Jon and he told his mother, one still wouldn't know if this is a fact because Kate could have been telling one big fib. It would only be a fact if it came from someone in the medical field who has or had access to the medical records.

Even then, if Kate told that physician that she has PCOS, it still wouldn't make it so, unless all of the lab results/diagnosis is in that report, including the tests that were done.

And it goes to intent. If there's even a hunch she tried to manufacture multiples (whether that's actually getting drugs she shouldn't have or even just jumping the gun on fertility treatments before giving it a fair try naturally), that should be explored.

For me, whether she on any level intentionally manufactured a family of multiples for the fame and fortune, or just accidentally fell into it unwittingly, is important when it comes to this woman's motives. She wants to play it like her entire life has been an accident. I do not believe it was. I think the exploitation of her children was premeditated and heavily orchestrated. In other words, there's actual malice here.

I feel certain the doctor urged her to wait, but she must have been adamant she wanted to conceive as soon as possible. In the hospital workplace as an employee, you get to the head of the line when it comes to access to the doctors. Not only that, but as a nurse, she sure as hell knew how to convince a doctor she knew what she was talking about in regard to symptoms, but tests do not lie. I cannot imagine a doctor not confirming a diagnosis without those tests. If the doctor performed tests, then she either had PCOS or not. I suppose it's possible she somehow managed to get fertility treatment without PCOS. I've always kind of wondered how come so many Hollywood types have twins these days. Is it possible for a doctor to give a woman fertility drugs because they want multiples even if there is no fertility issue? I don't know. But I do not believe in coincidence.

I am pretty sure this is because many, perhaps even most of them, are delaying pregnancy until late 30's early 40's after the surge in their career. Since the vast, vast majority of women cannot get pregnant naturally at that age, fertility treatments become necessary and thus a high risk of multiples. Many, many of those Hollywood moms are using donor eggs. Doctors have come out on record saying so.

I do know someone who was allowed to go straight to fertility treatments without even trying the natural way, because they were already in their mid 40's and their FSH levels tested out very poorly. Pregnancy naturally was going to be impossible, they had no good eggs left, and so it was straight to a donor. Kate was what, 30?

Perhaps Kate has been offline because of conferring with attorneys? I really can't see how she could legally stop him. Or she could be offline because she and Jon are going at it in family court? Jumping in! said...

Jumping in.
Have been reading, feeling compelled to add what I know. I am a local and know something about pcos. Pcos affects 5 to 10% of women of childbearing age.
She and Jon were together in 1997. If she were diagnosed with pcos why would a doctor wait to begin fertility treatments? It's not a "just try harder" kind of thing. Once a diagnosis is made, women with pcos who wish to have children are encouraged to try fertility treatments as soon as possible.

Tests for pcos:

Family history - pcos tends to cluster in families.

Twelve or more follicular cysts on the ovaries, as seen on an ultrasound.
Blood tests...
Lutenizing hormone (LH)
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
Total and Free Testosterone
Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS)
Prolactin
Androstenedione
Progesterone.
Other hormones that may be checked include:
estrogen
thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
glucose, cholesterol (HDL, LDL and triglicerides)

Kendra, born in 69, married Jeff in 89 learned she might not conceive, underwent fertility treatments. At 24 she gave birth and then again a few years later. They have fostered and adopted other children. This all took place prior to Kate meeting Jon. (Family history)
Sister Clarissa adopted about the time she was 30. Pcos is a spectrum disorder. Though it clusters in families sisters will have varying degrees of symptoms. Fertility treatments for pcos are often begun early on, as risks increase with age, and success may decrease.
The bad news is there is also an increased risk for depression, diabetes, heart disease, and endometrial cancer.
Treating pcos is not only about infertility it is about patient health. Any doctor who would simply take the word of a manipulative patient rather than properly authenticated documented proof from an imaging lab and diagnostics lab would be guilty of malpractice.
I hope this clears up some myths.
Have a good day all!

From what I've read, ethical doctors are not in the business of women giving birth to litters. IMO, either the doctor was shady ( the one she shopped for to have the tups), or she did something to make sure she had multiples. The link I posted has women who are going through the fertility process scratching their heads how the heck she ended up with so many babies.

I also read that PA does not regulate their fertility clinics, so you can end up seeing an OB-GYN who does fertility on the side. The doc is not an expert. This could explain her shopping around to find a doctor she could manipulate because her first doctor wasn't buying it. Also, because she had sextuplets, wouldn't that doctor have to go before a board to explain what happened? Of course, all that is kept confidential so we'll never know.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

You know there is a precedent for shady things happening between fertility doctors and women. Just look at Octomom's doctor. His licensed was revoked.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/06/a-matter-octomom-doctor-michael-kamrava.html

Of course there is a best practice that most doctors one hopes follow but it doesn't mean sometimes people go outside those boundaries. Maybe Kate did or didn't, we don't know and might never know.

Thanks, Jumping In. If her sisters had it, then it is likely she had it also in some degree. I'll always believe she manipulated the circumstances when it came to having the tups. Her sisters managed to not give birth to multiples.

I tend to believe it, too. Kate was so eager to impress upon everyone how she just "knew" she'd have trouble conceiving, and I think that's a very natural fear after abortion.
But, with all her yapping and writing about her supposed infertility, she's never been clear about how she was diagnosed.

Jumping In said...

You are welcome TLC stinks. I am under the impression Kate's route the second time around was different than Kendra's choice. I do not know.
I wonder was it cost, or the wish for multiples.

Kate's 2nd fertility treatment consisted of injections of fertility drugs, or gonadotropins, combined with intrauterine insemination (IUI), a form of artificial insemination in which the sperm is injected into the uterus.

The good thing about this IUI is that it's relatively cheap, a couple thousand dollars compared to the more than $10,000 average cost for a single round of IVF. The bad thing is that it's notoriously hard to control how many eggs will be fertilized. The IUI/gonadotropin procedure carries an increased risk of unpreventable high-order multiple births. And for a young woman like Kate Gosselin, the odds of having multiples with IUI only increase,

In 1980, only 1,337 triplets or higher-order multiples were born in the United States; in 1998, that number rose to 7,625, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

And as far as the rumored pregnancy when she was young, (I do not know), but women with pcos do become pregnant without fertility meds. Problem is, it is very unpredictable, with ovulation occurring randomly, or not all. Months or years can pass without the release of an egg, and even that varies within the same patient year to year. No consistency.

Times are changing with fertility treatments. IVF success rates are better allowing doctors to lessen the number of embryos implanted. In Europe doctors are now implanting single embryos with success.
And reader, honestly my opinion on why Kate did not use her celebrity to speak or educate about pcos? PCOS is not sexy nor is it marketable! Not like a nursery filled with chubby faced babies! And forgive me for saying this, but her roots were in religion, and churches wanted to hear about the miracle of birth, not hormone imbalance and medicine.

The whole " NO REDUCTION!" was a siren call to which Christians flocked to like catnip. Nary a worshiper would dare question the Great Kate about how she could take such a risk with human life. By shear luck and excellent medical care, those kids beat the odds and were born healthy.
Getting a woman knocked up with that many babies is reckless and I'm betting that J+K had a verbal agreement with the doctor to reduce should she wind up with HOM.

Well, right. What's not being understood is I don't think anyone is disputing there is best practice for fertility doctors that I imagine most doctors follow. And Kate and her doctor may very well have followed best practice. Or, maybe they didn't!

What was said is it's possible a doctor would not commit best practice, and we know for a fact that some have not. Exhibit A: Octomom. It makes no difference what treatments the Octomom doctor used. That's not important to the point. The point is it's proof that sometimes fertility doctors bend the rules, as he did. Think about it, they have every motive to skip a step here or there. THe point is to get good fertility rates which you can tell your clients. One hopes no one would be unethical in achieving those rates, but there IS a clear motive here folks.

--------------

I can't keep up with BV and his minions, but I think that he was the one Kate tweeted and asked to take down the haters, that she and BV would provide the info, and he was kind of reluctant to get involved. I am sure that others here know much more about that whole Kate/BV saga than I do.

Speaking of BV, I went to the BV Files website and looked at a photo of him, naked chest with tattoos. Good lord. This is Kate's hero...the knight in shining armor, the sheeple's god, the one that Gladys calls "sir?" If one is known by the company that one keeps, then that speaks volumes.

Jon and the kids made sushi last night. He posted a picture of the sushi NOT the kids on his Instagram page.

.....

Did you notice there were 8 sushi rolls surrounding one? Could he be making a statement? Pure speculation. Could he have had all the kids? Maybe this is why TFW has been quiet?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Awesome, Jon. Hope they were ALL THERE and accounted for!
The 8 sushi and the one in the middle reminds me of the mother of pearl ring that TFW wanted.
8 pearls surrounding the really big pearl.
She's a pit, not a pearl!
Yes, it does look good and I don't eat fish at all.
You know he enjoyed not having the FW on his back, gripping the whole time putting a massive ton of stress on him and mixing the green onions and white onions together after he specifically told her not to. She did it on purpose for drama because a normal person would of said, oh, ok. Is there anything I CAN DO TO HELP?
I saw the Emeril episode a while back and saw Jon having to peel all those cloves of garlic. It took him a very long time. I recently saw a hack of peeling a bunch of garlic in a few seconds! You put the cloves of garlic separated in a tupperware bowl and put the lid on and shake it as hard as you can, for about a minute.
Then take the lid off and all you do is pick out the garlic pieces. To cut cherry tomatoes quickly put them on a plate and put a plate facing them. Then take a long serrated knife and hold the plate and slice from one side to the other and you will have cut the CT's in half.
I love these hacks. The other night my niece was trying to clean her oven. She was scrubbing and scrubbing and it was not coming clean. I then googled cleaning your oven hack and it told of how to clean it and let it soak overnight.
So if you need a quick and easy way to do something google whatever it is and put hack with it and you may find an easier way.
Flimsy, I like the way Edith would say the drs. name, she would practically sing it. On the episode of when Edith was cooking all of the St. Patrick's Day food for Archie's Place, her leg flared up with phlebitis. Archie called for the dr. and was upset because the younger son of the dr. came. I felt so bad for Edith because she was killing herself cooking all of that food and Archie seemed to not appreciate it until she almost died.
FlimsyFlamsy said...
Redbird (#138), I think that St. Patrick's episode was Jean Stapleton's last appearance. She was a marvelous actress.
I'm not on Twitter, but is TFW's timeline dead,
or are her fans trying to get a response from
her? Is Gladys still MIA? I know someone said she tweeted after that last episode that she sometimes wondered why she bothered, and then someone is nice to her (Deanna?) and it's all worth it.
Will TFW counter Jon's sushi pic with a 10-stars meal photo of her own? Forget the picture -- maybe we can see a video clip, complete with shrieks of joy and squeals of delight!
NJGal51 said...
Milo's last tweet was on 7 February and it was her Super Bowl/Vann tweet.
Deanna's last tweet was 27 January biting about the haters.
TFW's last tweet was 13 February allowing as to how Shoka isn't even trying to go outside when the door opens because it's so cold.
Her timeline is dead. The non-fans are talking amongst themselves, an occasional fan from overseas pops in and Ms. Goody is always lurking ready to stir the pot. If not for Goody and the non-fans there would be no activity at all. If I were TLC I'd be worried because even the die hard fans don't seem to care any more.
OT: movie recommendations.
Hail Caesar! Is a funny and loving look at old time Hollywood. Anyone who likes the Coen brothers, anyone who likes Hollywood history, well really love it. If you recall watching old Esther Williams and Gene Kelly movie musicals, you will especially love the water dance number with Scarlett Johansson and the sailors on shore leave dance number with Channing Tatum. Lots of stars in small roles, lots of fun!
Another recommendation: DEADPOOL! I went to see it on recommendation of both my adult dds, who told dh and I we would love it. It's a film with R rating, much adult language, and main character who knows he is in a movie and regularly interrupts the action to talk to the audience frequently. It's funny, profane, violent, bloody, sexy, funny. The opening credits are hilarious. The closing credits are hilarious. And that extra scene after the final credits that is in all the Marvel movies, well, Deadpool doors it a little different because he's Deadpool. I love that Ryan Reynolds and Tim Miller believed in this character and this story so much that they spent eleven years bringing him to the screen, in a way the fans really love and appreciate.
I would have said don't bring anyone under twelve to the movie, but a friend brought his eleven year old son who reads the comics and he enjoyed it.
JoyinVirginia said...
On topic: Theresa Guidice has interview in this week's People about her prison experience, her book about her prison experience, her family coping with her prison experience, and her husband getting ready to have his own prison experience. Many photos of her daughters in the story.
It's issue with Ryan Reynolds, star of the hit movie Deadpool! And the Sexiest Father of the year, on the cover. And no identifiable photos of his little girl in the story.
Until a new episode or tweet or some other action is revealed, she's old news. I still read here for dog talk, general topics, recipes, tips, sharing stories,all that. Is it good TFW has nothing for us to talk about? No, because sadly, as she said herself, she"will always be in charge ( of those kids ) and that's never gonna change." The G8 are still living under her rules and roof, even if they get a sushi break , some of them, now and then. Still just as sad as when the whole sage began.
TFW said on Home and Family that out of that little meatloaf in that pan that it feed all of them and left overs for the next day. I don't think she had 2 lbs. of hamburger meat in there.
Midnight, your meatloaf sounds great. I would always have a pack of the dry mac and cheese powder from the blue boxes one night I got the idea to pop some popcorn and I put the orange powder in the bag and shook it up after it popped. Instant cheese popcorn. Then I did Parmesan. I wanted something chili powder but it wasn't long after that on Shark Tank some kid in college had a 4 pack of bottled seasonings to pitch. I thought this was brilliant what he did to test it. He convinced a big movie theater to let him set up a display of his products for free to do a test run. It was a big hit.
That is how I ususally make it, but in the absence of ketchup, you gotta do what you gotta do. I felt like I was opening a basket on Chopped...now what do I do with this? I thought perhaps I should have 'infused' it with orange zest for acidity and texture, (!!) but decided to just go with snipping open the packets of duck, soy sauce, and mustard, with some brown sugar and a tiny bit of maple syrup. It's one way to use up those extra packets.
I think I'll try it on pork chops!
The woman made famous by having eight children and then divorcing their father appeared in Season 10 with former Wynonna Judd partner Tony Dovolani. One need only watch ten seconds of any of her few performances to know why she should have stayed home with the kids. To date, she is widely considered the worst dancer in the show's history. In fact, some claim the only reason she miraculously made it to week four of the competition is because people voted for her so they could have something to laugh at each week.
At one point I think she was in tears and holding her hands over her mouth. It was not fake, it was pure emotion for watching someone else reach an incredible peak.
There is something to be said for seeing life as one big collaboration, like Taylor, instead of one big competition, as I believe Kate does.
I remember seeing her crying, laughing, joyous, her hands on her face. She was so happy!! It was a guy that won an award, I think.
Taylor is an encourager and has a giver's heart. She doesn't knock you down and doesn't kick you when your down. TFW knocks you down and then kicks you while your down. Then kicks you to the curb.
Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...
Taylor cheered for everyone but I did see she was cheering the most for Ed Sheeran. Ed Sheeran opened for her for a long time and she helped propel him into fame. I daresay she discovered him.
But, Ed Sheeran has beat her out in awards including at the Grammys. Someone she helped make now steals the award. Taylor is fine with that. That's because life is not a fixed pie and just because you support someone and encourage someone who on paper is your competition doesn't mean you're taking away anything from yourself. At the end of the day, Taylor won the biggest award of the night, album of the year, so it appears for all her cheering and support of the "competition" she was still winner take the grand prize.
I have posted many times over the years that if she would of took her meds, behaved, treated Jon and the kids like humans, let Jodi, Beth and whoever be in the show she would of been a multi-millionaire by now. Then she could of just done a once a year special, enrolled the kids in sports, extra activities after school for ALL of them. She would have plenty of money to hire drivers to take them everywhere they needed to go.
Brand is everything! Clothes, books, especially endorsements. She could of endorsed a stain remover. They do have stain remover, you know. If there wasn't, it would be a huge problem in this country and people would rally to have it invented and sell it. But she couldn't see the forest for the trees because she forced her children not to stain their clothes and then she took the clothes that were given to her and when she was done with them took them to the consignment shop to sell them.
One of the boys was terrified sitting on the golf cart when the boys went golfing with Jon. He was afraid of getting dirty and Jon said, Your mother is crazy, who cares if you get dirty? We'll just wash them something to that effect.
It is infuriating to read that she said that she stands 8 hours a day or would have to stand at the sink. Can't remember which one because of stains. Even if she had a huge stain remover endorsement, she would still force them to not stain their clothes and still take them to the consignment shop because she is that greedy and the money is never enough.
I think Kate's opportunities for branding are long gone now. She had a children's clothing line deal with Walmart & Healthtex and that was "put on hold", which really means they dropped her. So did Procter & Gamble.
These deals were among the biggest anyone could land, yet they are a distant memory for some, and most would never even know Kate once landed these remarkable endorsements.
KMart used Kate once for their layaway program, and it seems that was it.
Kate then did a couple blogging gigs, including Coupon Cabin, from which she was scathingly publicly fired.
After that, Kate took to her blog and Twitter for piddly freebies.
You can see the pattern here, not to mention her solo t.v. prospects of being a fixture on a talk shows have all but dried up.
So, supporting the family is still foisted upon the kids, as TLC has inexplicably brought the show back with a vengeance.
Over time, observing Kate, I think what she wants most is to be on tv. I think if she won the lottery, and TLC wanted to film the kids, she'd do it.
She loves the lifestyle that comes with filming, and that's never going to change.
Taylor is an encourager and has a giver's heart. She doesn't knock you down and doesn't kick you when your down. TFW knocks you down and then kicks you while your down. Then kicks you to the curb.
Then holds a grudge. I think Kate puts so much pressure on her kids to stay with her, and take care of her, because she's alienated so many people in her life.
Kate thinks the kids can't or won't ever leave her, yet, that's what she's done to her own family.
Her odds are good that some kids will never leave her, and she's banking on that.
Why should she be introspective and penitent? Why should she mend bridges? She can afford to hold onto her wrath because no all 8 will leave her.
I agree that TFW's potential lost income could have gone into the millions. She could've been asked to crank out a book a year -- party tips, household hints, couponing advice, etc. A cooking show would've been a no-brainer. Clothing line, cookware line, maybe even a line of organic products (salad dressing? healthy chips for kids?). Paid public appearances around the country, to give her her coveted "week away"
from her kids. And she could've paid someone
to run this empire in a way that would make it continue to earn her money, with very little effort on her part. Because TFW doesn't really
do effort.
What's left of all that potential? A 40-something Barbie doll wannabe, filming the same old show with the same old storylines at the same old network. She may scare up a talk show or reality show appearance once or twice a year, but the days of magazine covers and monster ratings are long gone. And with them, a fortune. And she has only herself to blame.
I think Scott from Coupon Cabin hit the nail on the head when he said Kate's inauthentic.
The vast majority of people who know who she is, have her number.
Cultivating a brand and creating a merchandizing empire takes dedication and really hard work. You can't just expect to work at it part-time when the mood strikes.
Look at The Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond. Her blog took her to stardom. She has penetrated multiple markets in media and merchandise.
And she didn't pop out 8 kids! She never cried poor! She never complains about work, EVER! Not one whine about getting up before dawn, which pretty much sums up ranch life.
No asking her kids what they can do for her. No demanding praise and thanks for everything she does for them. No disrespecting her husband. No alienating friends and family. No omnipresent bodyguard that she travels with and acts like a couple.
The bottom line is that Ree is every bit as driven as Kate, perhaps more. However, she hasn't bulldozed her way to the top and seems to be the same person that she was when she broke out as a talented blogger.
Kate's blog-what a joke.
The question Kate should have addressed was would she have been offered a reality TV show if she did not have kids? And there you have it. She's not a natural in front of the camera, has no particular talent, and if she thinks she's a real producer, she is mistaken because her show ideas suck. I would not be surprised she was named as producer because she could not get along with anybody else from Figure 8 so might as well let her dig her own grave. It's pretty obvious she has no ability but to repeat past show ideas. I give it one more year.
I'm thinking about the twins' 16th birthday, and
I bet TFW is pitching a trip rather than a party. She and Deanna taking the twins somewhere TFW wants to go, and the Montana women could babysit the tups.
This last round of shows seemed to portray M as the new Jon -- a foil for TFW. Why waste all that potential conflict on a simple party, when you can stretch it out over a vacation, with so many things that can go wrong? Just idle speculation!
No doubt the twins' 16th will be filmed. I didn't think Cara would still be going along with filming, but the pot keeps sweetening for them, so why not?
I guess it's worth the notoriety and loss of privacy.
I wonder if lacrosse has been C's "currency" all these years? She seems to be the only one of the
8 to be involved in a long-term extra curricular activity, and the child who seems most miserable about filming.
I remember the Proctor and Gamble promotion Kate did. She was standing with a huge grin in front of rolls of paper towels. I think there was a painted flower pot or 2 in the scene too.
I also remember the Walmart/HealthTex deal. As I recall even all those years ago there was an outcry from the public about Kate's face on the tags. Nobody was amused and enough people spoke up that the line was dropped here and sent abroad to some developing country.
That's been YEARS, but it goes to show the public was not in love with Kate Gosselin even then.
