TLC filming for update special

After a long period of no new news about the promised "update special" from TLC, a few locals have spotted Kate and the crew filming around PA this week. Reactions from locals have been universally negative.

Filming locations include Michaels and a casual cafe. Thank you to the locals for keeping a keen eye out.

So far, it doesn't seem like TLC is paying to take the gang on some kind of "trip" for any footage. So there's that at least.

Disappointment must have run rampant amongst the kids over that.

localyocul said...

It IS pretty funny that they are shooting in Wyomissing and not in an exotic vacation location. Unless that's a later "birthday" surprise.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I hope this is just "day in the life" and no fancy undeserved trips. It would serve her right. Poor mediocre thing they dragged her up so early today to go get coffee and a scone. Must see TV.

She has always emphasized the thing the kids really miss about filming is the trips. If I'm not mistaken even Jon admitted the kids missed the trips. So does that change things if filming involves no trips or special treatment? What say you Kate? Do they like when TLC just films them getting a breakfast bagel at the cafe? I can see the kids losing patience fast with all this if all it means is being embarrassed by a film crew following them all weekend and no major perks out of the deal. Having a film crew following you around when you are 6 is a totally different ball game when you are 10 and suddenly discover that many things embarrass you.

localyocul said...

That's why she tweeted about the "ordinary life"! They are testing the waters to see if there is interest in "Growing up Gosselin"; an extraordinary family in an ordinary town. They know people don't buy Kan do Kate and don't want to see an entitled bitch roam the world.

FYI said...

From the picture, it looks like Kate is at the register paying for a purchase. What happened to her "yummy" breakfasts and her baking all her own stuff? Seems strange that they would film her picking up breakfast.

localyocul said...

I think Mady mentioned the triips on the View too but I may be mistaken.

Kate goes to a craft store. Gosselins go to dinner. Kate goes for coffee. Wow I hope they go grocery shopping and to the dog groomers. I'm on the edge of my seat in anticipation.

It feels a little bit like a big FU to Kate from TLC, doesn't it?

For a kid, nothing says Memorial Day like getting the shit filmed out of you.

Prediction- a late Bday party will be part of the filming, and Kate will explain that it was too cold to have the party earlier. Of course they filmed in blue-lips inducing weather when her show was filming, but this will be explained away, guaranteed.

I love how Kate will be all over Wyomissing, like she doesn't hate living there.

I wouldn't put it past TLC to purposely churn out a boring day-in-the-life special. When ratings are abysmal then they can just tell Kate sorry ratings weren't good, no more specials.

I don't think that TLC wants low ratings- it doesn't matter if they're home or traveling. I think what matters is how much TLC promos the hell out of the special.
TLC can make a package that piques the interest of the ogling masses. Let's see- fun, stress, kids acting devilishly, controversy involving Jon....
Yeah, they can sell it if they want.

I just like that Kate has to actually work for this one instead of getting a full entourage to another luxury vacation.

PatK said...

I mean, seriously. If TLC was even thinking about a new series for Kate out of this, everyone in that decision making process needs their head examined.

America no longer cares about six 10-year-olds and a pair of 13-year-olds being hustled around the country (or out of the country) for filming. Even the whining, screeching, spitting and slapping has gotten old. And let's not even get into riding bikes or motorized vehicles around the driveway/property. Yawn.

Sorry, Kate. I just don't see another series in your future.

Whatever their motivation it's definitely low budget. That looks like a two person camera crew, a camera and sound. Free, local locations. A budget that pays for coffee and a bagel. Boring set ups like shopping and restaurants. That's about as bare bones as you can get. They're not exactly putting in a lot of effort here.

NJGal51 said...

Have any of the locals mentioned seeing Steve with her while she's out and about filming?

====

Maybe they're emphasizing her piecing and patching theme for the special. I guess we'll have to pretend along with her and ignore the fact that she was just in NYC for weeks, still lives in the McManor, has three pricey vehicles in driveway....

As for Steve's wherabouts, I'm sure he got to sleep in. No one in her area will come anywhere near her.

JoyinVirginia said...

Low budget. Reality TV is not the money maker it used to be, as the cable channels have lots of reality choices. Real Housewives of NYC, LA, Atlanta, Miami, Des Moines; Bad Girls of wherever, Follow This Family That Wants To Be Like The Kardashians; Let's Pretend We Are Amish And Do Ridiculous Things; Catfish filming real people who have fallen for ridiculous stories; Sister Wives, Brother Husbands; Let's Plan An Over The Top Wedding. MORE!
Competition is fierce, and there are many reality wanna bees out there who will work for less and be nicer to work with.
TLC will invest as little as possible in the update special THEN see if the ratings and interest are still there.

Since when does Kate care if what comes out of her mouth flies in the face of good reasoning?!
This is the same woman who decried 10 or 12 inches of snow and all of her trees ruined when at most, 5 inches fell and she lost a couple twigs and the whole event wasn't a big deal at all

lukebandit said...

Do ya'll think she negotiated a huge filming film fee per day to film them at the McMansion? Like the house in Beverly Hills Cop? In lieu of not going on a big trip?

It would be sweet justice against kate if at the end of the special they have Jon and ALL the kids hugging him with smiles on their faces and telling him they love him, with Shoka too. Unbeknownst to her.

Can you imagine her watching that at the end with the credits rolling and seeing Jon and the kids, Shoka? With soft piano music? She would have to be committed.

Is it possible that TLC is only doing this update due to contractual obligations? Seems pretty low rent. Hey, maybe TLC is piecing and patching. While on the Cookbook/Jon Bashing Tour she said they were at the very, very end of their contract with TLC. I'm guessing that TLC is contractually obligated to film an update and don't want to risk being sued by her. Perhaps the contract stated that the update had to be done within one year of the end of the contract and they're getting it done before the new seasons start. All of the new shows for the fall are likely already in the can and they sent a skeleton crew to finish up. They're likely just crossing their Ts and dotting their Is to get rid of her, once and for all. It would be funny if they only had to film it, not actually show it on the air. Summer filler, anyone?

I live in the same area as Kate and shop in the same stores as her: Target, Giant, the mall etc. and in all these years I have never run into her (which I consider a blessing). It has already been said but truly nobody around here cares. She can go anywhere she wants and there is no crowd of people, traffic doesn't come to a stop and no photographers.

What does it tell you when they even a film crew around her and still no crowds ??? If it wasn't for reading this blog, I wouldn't even have known they were here filming.

I believe someone already mentioned that the update on the Quints By Surprise has already been on TV last week. They did the same thing. Taped the mother and the quints going shopping for birthday supplies and having a sleepover with each of them having one friend over. Sounds like TLC isn't doing anything special for these update shows.

If TLC really wanted ratings, they'd do couch interviews with the locals, get their honest opinion of TFW.

Never a doubt in my mind.

Nothing this biotech loves more than a camera in her face, even a low budget, no exotic locale, filming session. It's pretty funny that they are showing her 'ordinary' life, doing things that quite frankly, she rarely does with the kids, especially if she has to pay for it. Yes it's just another ordinary Gosselin weekend.

Whatever prompted TLC to do this update, I agree that it's most likely a single show.
In any event, I have no interest in watching tfw screeching, complaining and flapping her hands. As we all agree, those kids deserve privacy, not more filming.
TLC is banned in this household; I see no reason to change that. Poor kids.

My local paper did a big article about my situation and printed a big picture of my ds's and I. I said yes, and she told me, Oh, I prayed for you so much!

I don't think it was because of cancellation. I think it was to shut her up and prevent an epic meltdown and part of the contract from the get-go. They wouldn't owe her anything. Those contracts put them firmly in control. They're figuring on a cheap quickie production that they know won't fly but will fulfill their part of the contract. I wouldn't be surprised if she had already been paid a long time ago and she was at their mercy. They would have her by the short and curlies because they know she'd sell her soul to be in front of a camera again. If she phones this one it, well, let's just say it will be her final hoorah.

I do believe, that is the angle TLC & Kate, with help from purseboy are going for. The poor single mom of 8, struggling, with everyday chores & life, and trying to stay afloat, in this economy. ALL BS! And a drop for Growing up Gosselin. Kate we see through you! I just don't see a conspiracy here between TFW, Steve and TLC. Yes I do believe that TFW will be crying about piecing and patching because she does that every chance she gets. I think TLC is fulfilling their contractual obligations to do an update show and TLC is the one piecing and patching - no elaborate trips or birthday parties in exotic locations. And I agree that TFW will sell her soul and those of her children to get in front of the cameras again.

It looked like Mr. Target Man liked her. He was smiling in the photo he posted. Maybe he was just caught up in the whole celeb thing. She's just burned so many bridges.

When I think of Kate, and her assumption that she'd always enjoy the life of a celebrity, filming until the kids turned 18, paps fighting for photo ops with her, being chauffeured around, running off to NYC or CA and taking trips to exotic locations, I have to think of the quote from Julius Caesar, when Cassius says to Brutus, "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings."

Kate thought it was fate, her destiny to be famous. For her, it was in the stars. That was not to be; she's left so many ill feelings in her wake, and has hurt so many people, and she only has herself to blame. It's her own darn fault.

I think that it's been mentioned here that Kate might be suffering from some kind of spine deformity, whether it's scoliosis or kyphosis, I'm not sure. However, if you look at some of the photos of her from the side, you can clearly see a hump. In this case, it appears to be something that she just can't help.

If the kids weren't with TFW during this jaw-droppingly exciting bagel
and coffee run, then where were they? Were they home alone with a
camera crew? With a babysitter? With their dad? If she's going to
play the part of a harried on-the-go single mom, she better try to
make it look legit. A "real" single mother of 8 wouldn't be gallivanting around town on a Saturday while her kids are home alone. And someone piecing and patching wouldn't be able to afford a sitter for
8 kids while they did errands they could've done while the kids were
in school. Can't drop 'em off at Jodi's - she was left at the curb with
the mommy journals.

The fans will never get it. The "realest reality show" was a pack of lies, and this special will be more of the same.

I find it odd she is being filmed in such a drab looking outfit. She has to be working an angle. I will join the "piecing and patching" consensus. For Kate to dress down this way, my guess is she is deflecting away the glamour around the CA shoot in New York. She is going for the "everyday, struggling, single mother" storyline where she feels there may be audience. The problem here is that TFW underestimates the intelligence of the viewing public, (save the 6 sheeple). She can dress down or wear a tiara, it's irrelevant, because she is a transparent phoney, and the public is on to her conniving ways.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Kate feels M&C are old enough and know how to handle their younger brothers and sisters enough for her to leave the house more often without all of them in tow leaving the twins in charge.

Most definitely she is working the piecin' and patchin' angle with that outfit. I wonder if she was allowed to come up with story ideas? It would be her usual deceit to play up the sympathy card for the viewers who are naive about her. Poor, poor Katie Irene with the deadbeat husband needs a TV job to support her family of 8! The show wasn't cancelled early, was it? - they just didn't renew the option to renew/film another season. I think there was an option to do updates IF TLC wanted to, which TFW was obligated to do.

TLC stinks said...

Carole, I believe you may be correct that the show was not renewed instead of early cancellation. Regardless, she could not produce the ratings without Jon, LOL.

It has to be because of contract obligation that TLC is filming. I am betting her agent had it in the contract that if the show was not renewed or cancelled, Kate was guaranteed an update. Unfortunately, it could be more than one. She has been a loyal soldier for TLC knowing that she could still milk money from them.

I cannot wait for the CA and update recaps! And we'll know if we are great at predicting her. Kind of sad we can read her mind.

Prayer for my mom would be greatly appreciated.

How is that supposed to impress the average viewer of this update special? What angle is TLC going for with this update?

Yeah, it should be a real launching platform for another series. *rolling my eyes*

I think so. Will is four and Zoey two ? They might have fleeting enjoyment but I believe they would need to be a couple of years older to appreciate and remember it. But with these people, cost is of no consequence and then there's the show....Zoey seems frightened by many things, like Santa Claus so idk if she would like the characters. I have only watched a few episodes but Will seems up for anything while Zoey does not like the things they set up, like a tea-party, shopping, new places. I think she had a more traumatic time in her orphanage than Will did.

My take on the picture above--one of the flashback clips will be of Alexis when she's upset about not getting a bagel ("I…Want…A…Bay--GULLLL"), and then TFW will reminisce about that and decide to surprise all the kids with special birthday bagels. Playing off a cute moment in a past episode. She'll roll out of bed, pull on her pricing-and-patching-mom uniform, and make a bagel run.

I think TLC was just looking for some cheap summer filler and went with a couple update specials for the Jones and Gosselin families. Looks like they were going for bare-bones budgeting, so no big trips included. They waited until the contracts with the families had ended so they weren't locked in to a high wage, and then were able to negotiate low salaries. They splashed out for some decorations and bagels, but it doesn't look like Kate got all new clothes, like she used to get. That must really tick her off. Remember on CWS, she and all the kids had brand-new Uggs and the kids all looked like walking ads for Peace Love World? She likes grifting the expensive stuff. Apparently she didn't get that this time, unless she went straight to the companies. Judging by what she's been photographed wearing, she hasn't had much luck with that.

This time, the ones in the driver's seat was TLC. They could make Kate an offer, and she was forced to either take it or leave it. hey knew how desperate she was to get her face back on TV. THey knew that she failed for almost 3 years to get a new show or even a special from another network. No way was she going to turn down an offer from them, no matter how low, or how few perks she got out of it. Welcome to the common life, Kate!

Does anyone have a link to the picture of Kate's luggage when she went to CA? I have heard about it, but I haven't seen it. My SIL (Single career woman, no kids) has new LV luggage, and I was wondering if it was similar. If it is real, then I totally call BS on her piecing-and-patching claims. I know what SIL paid for hers, and no mother on a budget is going to pay that amount for luggage.

Formerly Duped said...

For those who don't know what wearing purple attitude means:

“Warning” by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

I really don't understand your belief that you'd be stared at if you wore a cap in public. Is it because you would stare at a cap wearing woman, therefore you think they would do the same to you? I've never noticed anyone staring at me when I'm out and about, but does that mean that they don't stare or does it mean that I'm totally oblivious to what is going on around me?

I'm betting they are, mediocre life and all.

Reality tv has been around long enough now to know that at some point, you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube.
Virtually all reality tv "stars" and families reach tipping point, a threshold, where being "normal" and "nice" and "relatable" just isn't enough anymore, and then their public life takes on a life of its own when tabloids conjure up stories, and pernicious production companies like TLC start to tweak the story line to make it more edgy and controversial.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think Kate was ever, ever right about not being able to go back.
Jon and Kate certainly could have at that point.
The show had run its course.
How many more dirty diapers, amusement parks and zoos can people want to see?
Something had to change. This family wasn't so abnormal or special anymore.
We saw how Jon and Kate coped.
It was getting stale.

Funny, isn't it, that right after that fateful final episode of season 4, when Jon made clear his feelings about wanting to get out of the spotlight, how things got salacious, acrimonious, controversial and polarizing?

I don't know what the format of the update show will be, but it would be nice if there was a dialogue rather than Kate shovelling the usual s*#t. Wouldn't it be refreshing if someone sat across from her and asked why there are no family or friends attending the tups10th birthday party. The interviewer could point out that if this event is big enough to warrant a television show, shouldn't the extended family factor in somewhere. The truth is, it's all a show, always has been, always will be. The extended family were all voted off TFW island long ago for trying to protect the children she continues to use as bait for her own fame.

How do you sell your sextuplet's 10th birthday with no-one there other than their two older siblings and their mother (and possibly Deanna). TFW will pass off the crew as "family" making it even more pathetic. I am speculating, but this is her well-worn pattern.

I forgot what part of Texas they live in but I think it's about the same plane trip to L.A. or Florida. Two and a half to three hours depending.

However if they must go to Disney and I were thinking of the BABIES I would have chosen Disney in California. The weather is much nicer in May. All this week we've had nice long cool mornings and rain would be exceedingly rare. It would have been beautiful. (((((((((
This is just my own speculation, but here goes. I think initially Bill and Jen thought that filming their lives would serve several purposes: 1. Educate the general public about little people and raise awareness. 2. Bring in more income. Who knows what educational loans Jen might still be paying off, or other debts/living expenses they have. I'm sure additional income is always welcome. Maybe there were additional reasons as well.

Once they film one season, I think the money and the perks make it extremely difficult to choose not to film a second season. Especially if the first season goes well, doesn't seem to dramatically impact their lives, etc. Hey, they're popular! Imagine how that feels, especially if during much of your life, you've had to deal with the stares, the comments, people reacting to you negatively. Now suddenly, you are on TV and getting all this fan mail, and invitations to speak here, there and everywhere. It's a huge ego boost, even to the most down to earth person.

And the TLC money funds a beautiful custom home, expensive cars, and so many other perks that they might not normally been able to afford. Yes, Jen works in a prestigious field and probably does earn a good income. But somehow I doubt Bill's self-employment income is booming, especially in this economy. Add to that the desire for a child or two. Whether with the assistance of medical intervention or adoption, that's expensive.

I think that anyone can get caught up in having that extra income, all the perks, the fun trips, and the adulation of fans. I think Will and Zoey are absolutely adorable and I do enjoy watching them ---- but that doesn't mean I think it's right they are being filmed. I am hoping Jen and Bill decide that they've shared enough for now, and will decline to extend their contract with TLC when it comes up for renewal. That's my hope. However, I'm cynical enough to doubt that's what will happen. They'll likely renew until their show is non-renewed by TLC - just like Kate.

I think it confuses the issue to confuse the mostly positive aspects of educating about dwarfism with the mostly negative of filming children so extensively. Education about dwarfism can and has been accomplished more than adequately without sacrificing a child's right to privacy.

Clearly they don't agree with you and, once again, since these are not your children your opinion is ultimately irrelevant

$$$

I think the public's opinion on public figures exploiting their children is relevant to the public discussion. We elect the officials who make the laws that regulate Jen and Bill's children.

Exploitation of children is not left strictly to the parents and thus is our business. It is an issue that is public and regulated. The legislature has spoken, and in every state child labor is regulated. It's a matter of public concern and public comment is completely appropriate and relevant. Fortunately we do not live in a society where exploiting your children is none of anyone's business. The protection of children is everyone's business. If you feel that should not be the case why hang out here but to troll? If Jen and Bill feel that should not be the case they need not put themselves or their children on our TV sets.

I'd also be curious to know from Jill and Ben in what areas they feel education about dwarfism is lacking at this point. The Little People Big World show has been on for a decade. If you haven't seen the show by now you never will. I think their community has done an upstanding job with education and I think there's been a real change in how the public both views those with dwarfism as well as an understanding about what terms the community doesn't like and which ones are acceptable (little people, short stature, etc). I don't see that it's worth sacrificing their children's privacy when this area is already very well covered. If they were the first little people to ever speak out in public about the issue that might be different. I agree with the essence of what Millicent said. It started off as an educational mission and then they got the preverbal taste of the apple. Now it seems like if they are claiming this is about education I small a cop out.

And I'd like to put on record I quite like them. I think they are extremely hands on and loving parents, and they seem like people you'd be happy to go to dinner and a movie with. This has nothing to do with some kind of personal issue with them. I don't even really buy into the moocher comments about Bill because he's really been pulling his weight with the kids when Jen has been sick. If he were a female I don't think anyone would suggest he's a moocher, it's just a modern family with a dad who is more active at home and a mom who is the breadwinner. In some ways it is more disappointing to see nice people like this starting down such a shaky path with the kids because I expect so much more of them than some dolt like Kate.

Tucker's Mom (#130), I so vividly remember that last couch interview with J & K when he expressed displeasure about life in a fish bowl.
And TFW said something like, we need to "iron things out" (while pantomiming ironing). What she meant was -- this lugnut is trying to
get us off the gravy train, while I'm wearing my jaunty conductor's
cap and giddily yelling "Whoo-whoo!"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, I thought that ironing pantomiming was very symbolic as it was done in front of Jon's face....as if she was ironing him out of the picture.

Totally agree.

And let us not forget that TFW once said, "If anyone no longer wants to film, we will stop filming." Another farce.

At this point, what else if left but the child exploitation?
I see no sign whatsoever that Bill and Jen have an exit strategy, which I think is imperative if and when a couple or family embarks on reality television for the sake of "educating" the public.
The RH franchise is different. They're all fame whores who want to be on tv in perpetuity and have no intention of going back to life out of the spotlight.
The perfect example of a family with no plans to make being in the spotlight are the Hayes family.
I'd love to interview Betty to find out her thoughts about returning to a normal, camera-free life, in light of what happens to families like the Gosselins.
I think the normal life exit-window narrows at a precipitous pace once you cross a certain threshold of fame and moreover, notoriety.
Becoming part of the American lexicon and zeitgeist comes with a hefty price tag.

She was just on leave for 4 months for her cancer. I can't imagine the hospital saying, sure, go film all you want, you can work when it fits into your filming schedule. They should enjoy life privately. I know I would want a break after the adoptions and cancer . It is amazing the TLC parallels between Gosselin and Little Couple shows. Even Jon and Kate got those passports to South Korea because Kate wanted to adopt a Korean baby ( new story plot!). I don't get what the fascination is with Little Couple because they are doing exactly what TLC did with the Gosselins. Sure, they appear more grounded and personable, but it still comes down to being owned by TLC.

Maybe you expected a stare so you saw a stare? How do you know they were looking at them for a baseball cap and not for something else?

I never saw that kind of judgmental attitude when I was in PA, and I saw plenty of baseball caps on women. Go to Wegmans on a Monday morning in Anytown, PA. You'll see very casually dressed women and hair tucked under a baseball cap. Usually one that says Nittany Lions. It's not only acceptable but it's common.

This to me is the epitome of everything that is so sick and wrong with Kate. Another human being, brought into that home for the sake of a cool story line. Imagine the ratings!!!!!! :( Going out on a limb, but if I had to guess I imagine the child would have ended up being Cinderella. Kate's use for that child would have ended when the episode was over.
Thank goodness for Korea's stringent adoption restrictions.

In a way, I think Michelle Duggar is guilty of the same thing. I think she wants an even 20 children, and I think she enjoys the media flurry whenever she's expecting. TLC is right there, filming her at the Dr. and dropping stupid, vague teasers about her fertility. Never mind that of Michelle's last two pregnancies, one died and one was born profoundly premature. It's all about the ratings.

Maybe Jenn got World and Land mixed up. That can happen when it's a free trip and you don't have to pay attention other than to just get on the plane.

I do hope they are in CA not Florida. The weather is beautiful and comfortable today for the babies. They'd be a hot, sticky, uncomfortable mess in Florida. I wonder what day they are going to Disney. It's probably going to be a zoo this entire week because of the holiday weekend and summer coming up. Even if they obviously will cut the lines that's still overwhelming for little children.

I think it's rude as well to take a film crew and inconvenience other patrons. They could go any time and could probably cut the line without TLC, because of their special needs. Do they have to go when everyone else is trying to go?

I don't ascribe lofty, selfless motives because they're little people.
I don't think they have a patina of respectability because they're little people parents of adopted little people (and I'm sure that good will goes a really long, long way).

Same goes for the couple with sextuplets on the OWN network.
I don't give them a pass for being blue collar and minorities.

The basic issues are the same across the board.

Children should not grow up with cameras in their faces, and booms above their heads, in the sanctity, privacy and safety of their own homes.

Stop it. The TLC "freak show" comments frequently made by posters here, including myself, is meant to make a point. The little people. The lady with no arms and legs. The fortune teller. The Dionnes. Sounds just like their current lineup. Yet if you set up a circus freak show today there would be outrage. So why is it okay for TLC to do it? Because we sit in the comfort of our own homes and no one has to watch us stare?

I don't personally think anyone is a "freak" just because they were born differently. Don't twist my words. The point is a valid one. Address the point or move on.

Exactly. But does TLC care? Nope.

I guess we all (here) know the bottom line is the show isn't really about how well Bill and Jen get along in the world in spite of the obstacles they've faced nor is it about what 'wonderful' parents they are, it's about filming people who are 'different' from the norm but only as long as the ratings are there and what those ratings translate into.

And I personally don't care if the little couple are nice people or not, they've bought into this child exploitation craze with TLC, plain and simple. In my opinion it makes them lousy parents because in the end their kids will pay the price.

You sound just like those who paid to visit the Dionnes. They too were just living normal lives. The girls played tea party and played with dollies, had schooling, played in the snow. Did normal kid things. While everyone watched of course. And paid for the privilege.

If you see nothing wrong with this, then I know where we need the most education and it's not in the area of dwarfism. It's in the area of child exploitation and exploitation of others in general. Clearly there are those who still don't get it, and it's baffling.

It does nothing to "educate," but rather exploits those with mental illnesses, who consent to having this sickness filmed.

You know, on another note, what does it say about viewers that they need an entire television show to inform them that "people with disabilities lead normal lives."

It's 2014. I would hope most people by now are well aware that people with disabilities are able to lead quite normal lives. If people don't know this by now I'm speechless. This is just TLC's party line. They are not seriously interested in spreading awareness. They are seriously interested in how to make their 5 bits off their freak show. Even PBS made fun of them for this, and I trust their judgment. Even PBS agrees that all TLC does is exploit and prey on people. PBS is correct.

They watch because it's like the old rubber-necking at an accident or in days past, buying a ticket to get inside the tent. Only with TLC, they can do it without charging the price of admission. What's sad is that these kids are being used in the name of fostering education. Jen and Bill seem to be of above-average intelligence but it's all done for the Benjamins. If they are concerned with educating the public on what it's like for little people to live in a world of "normal" size adults, then let them donate all of their earnings from the show to a charity, or have a network film one documentary, not weekly episodes where they are off on luxury trips with everything paid for by TLC.

How about the library if an obscure subject fascinates you? This sounds like how people justify testing on animals. It's harmful to the animals, but it's the best way to learn, right?

Please explain why children need to give up their privacy so you can learn about whatever tickles your fancy. Why not pick an interest that does not involve inserting yourself into another CHILD's private life, like sewing or hiking?

Well maybe we have learned some things and it's good to learn, but this is not the only way or even the best way to learn about these subjects. How in the world did we learn before reality T.V.?

If you are seriously interested in the medical aspects of an obscure medical issue (which I'm skeptical of, I highly doubt the vast majority of viewers have any kind of serious interest in medicine), you could start with half an hour and Google or heaven forbid the library. You could learn more than you could in thirty minutes of uninterrupted reading than six years of vegging out watching Little People.
