The morality of freebies

Reality T.V. often makes a spectacle of lavishing families with expensive gifts and trips. Usually, for free.

The Duggars in China

Kristin Wong, an award-winning writer and film maker (MSN, Forbes), has been thinking a lot about the morality of personal finance lately. In a recent blog she tackled the question of whether it is moral to accept a freebie you don't really need or want. Kristin had this to say about this controversial issue:

Recently, I took advantage of a free pair of movie tickets to see “The Lone Ranger,” a movie I really have no desire to see. But the tickets were free! And they were limited, so without giving it much thought, I nabbed them. I needed them; they were free.
The Roloffs in Hawaii
Practically, this may have been a good decision. After all, it could be a fun, free date night idea. A good, cheap way to spend a Friday night with Brian.

But morally, this was kind of a crappy thing for me to do. Because maybe a hard-working mom saw the ‘Free Lone Ranger Ticket!’ link. And maybe she got excited because her daughter wanted to see it — but oops! Someone who doesn’t even appreciate the movie already got the last one because, “*shrug* It’s free.”
Part of being frugal, at least the moral part of it, is not taking more than what you need — not just because you can’t afford it, but because you want to leave more for everyone else. In this way, I think there is morality in thrift. What I did wasn’t frugal. It was cheap.

To me, the ongoing cheap vs. frugal debate proves that there’s morality in frugality. When does your frugality negatively affect others? Just because it’s a practical, sound financial decision for your budget doesn’t mean it’s a good decision overall. There are ethical questions to consider, which makes it seem like there is indeed morality in personal finance.
Money-related issues go beyond a cost-benefit analysis. We have to ask ourselves, is this hurting anyone?

Thanks for your common "cents", Kristin.

Here is a golden opportunity for TFW (that effin' wife) to do something nice for someone that cannot afford food.

--------------------

I was thinking about this. If I could easily afford to take some of my kids out to eat a few times a week and I had a gift card, I'd take a look around the restaurant to see if there was a family there who might really need to use the card. Or, I'd wait outside the restaurant for a few minutes, watch for a family to go in, give them the card, tell them to enjoy their meal, and then leave. No fanfare. I certainly wouldn't tweet that I had a gift card. Who does that? Unless, of course the card came from the restaurant in return for promoting them.

I do like the sediments (sic) presented here. I think we've all been guilty of accepting a free sample here and there that we don't really need, or taking shampoo etc from a hotel. But this woman has expressed the lack of morality in this as it deprives a worthy person in need/want of something we don't really require. Same goes in taking those 'free' hotel goods- the hotel has to pay for them. We don't need them, so why do this ??

I recall TFW being so thrilled with the goodies in various hotels and snapping them up and we have read her "requirements" sent to hotels in preparation for her visits .And her grifting addiction.

Good thought-provoking post, Admin.

Another fact they leave out is Kate's refusal to work on the marriage. Sylvia LaFaire herself talks about how she TRIED to give Kate therapy and Kate was very resistant. Kate cut off the conversation when Sylvia tried to get her talking about her childhood, an important, essential component of therapy. I get that a childhood may be painful, but countless other people with much more painful childhoods have been willing to talk about them in therapy as long as it meant they could get better.

Jon also talked about how he desperately wanted Kate to give couple's counseling a real try and she refused other than with Dr. Phil to make a buck off it. I understand trying to save a marriage may not work, but don't you at least want to be able to tell your children you did everything you could to save it? That Mom and Dad gave this 100% effort before giving up?

When you are cut out of Kate's life that's it, there is no room to try to fix anything in her mind.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yes, funny how the fanz didn't thoroughly dissect that tidbit from "sterling" Kate where she said in the email to Hailey she would make it clear that she & Jon were seperated for a year before Jon started dating Hailey. That's hard for the fanz to dispute when this roughly fits the separation timeline others have given. Allegedly, by the Hawaii vow renewal trip TFW had already checked out and an "agreement" allowing Jon to date others was in the works.

Leading up to that, TFW was already totally estranged from her family and finally had enough FU money to ditch Jon. Achieving her ultimate goal of having no icky, annoying intrapersonal relationships which require compromise, respect, kindness, compassion and a filter. TFW used to cackle that R show was "the realest reality show on tv." When in reality she & Jon were separated and doing a very crappy job pretending to be happily married.

The fans know this. Their anger towards him stems from his refusal to play nice and carry on the charade. The show became popular because of TFW being a witch and long suffering Jon making his snarky under the breath comments. Alone, TFW has the appeal and talent of a pile of dog poo. If only Jon had stayed on with the fake reality show, their qween wouldn't be the unemployable lump she is now.

The hotel things is a good example. They are supposed to be for if you forget your shampoo or mouthwash, not because they want you to have a nice gift basket of free stuff courtesy of them. Of course there is no rule or law that says you can't take them even if you don't need them, but then doesn't that drive hotel prices up for everyone else over time? I think there is also a difference between taking a token gift (for instance, they were passing out free hand sanitizer on the beach last week) versus taking something like a movie ticket or restaurant gift card that could make a family really happy. Hand sanitizer is not going to crush any dreams but a movie ticket or gift card to a good restaurant could really make a less fortunate family's day.

I know someone worth millions who had an entire 10 gallon tupperware bin FULL of these little samples. It was positively unreal! Most people who saw that thought number one it was creepy and number too that it was really wrong. They of all people don't need all that and what if everyone took that much? If they had instagram when I saw that I would have taken a picture.

Mrs. Malaprop said...

I think it's ok to take the little shampoo & lotion bottles from hotel rooms. They're put there for me to use, and I consider their expense to be a part of my bill. It's not like the hotel is refilling them for the next guest. At least I hope not! Lol. The hotel always has my credit card number in case they have to charge me for "incidentals." I've never been charged for taking the soaps & lotions. If I took a towel, I'd expect to be charged. Now, if I was an overnight guest in someone's home and they had toiletries in their bathroom for me to use, I wouldn't consider those mine for the taking.

Yes I remember that vividly and I remember us saying TFW should leave some leftover for everyone else who actually NEEDS that discount to make it this month! We also take the complimentary toiletries when we stay at hotels. Our church collects them for the shelters they provide too. The cost of them 'is' included in the price for your stay, as are the 'free' breakfasts you get. LOL when I pay the amount of money they charge for a night's stay, I don't feel guilty for taking them!

I classify many extreme couponers 'hoarders' in this as well. Yes, some give to the needy, but many don't and hoard the goods they purchase, regardless of whether the goods will go bad or not. Hey, but they got it for free or for .01, .05., .10, so why not! Instead of getting 10 or 20, no, they clear a whole shelf of goods, because they can, not for need, it's greed plain and simple. Who needs 100 mouthwashes, no one's breath is that bad =)

I have absolutely no issue with someone trying to save money and provide for their family for less, food & toiletries are expensive and many are hurting financially. However, many stores have changed the way specials and coupons work together, simply because of the extreme couponers. Coupons are to get people to try products, get them at a reduced rate, etc. Not take 100 for free because you found a way to circumvent the intent of the offer. LOL can you tell this is one of my pet peeves.

Thanks to everyone for the info on Chipotle gift cards. I'll check that out next time I'm there, but I've never noticed them in the one I usually go to.

Re the hotel soaps/toiletries. I always take them. I keep a few to keep in my travel bag or purse (especially the hand lotion). The rest I put in a bag and periodically take them to our local toiletries/household goods pantry (works like a food pantry but distributes things like toothpaste, shampoo, laundry detergent, etc.) or to the local shelter.

TFW is like the dog in the manger. She'll take any freebie that comes her way, whether she can use it or not, but be damned if she's going to pass anything on to anyone else. It's hers, all hers.

Another comment. I remember a few years ago there was series on Quiverful families. One family of about 10, had their kids go to Sam's Club at dinner time and eat the samples- pizza, sausage rolls, juice, cookies etc until they were full. They also helped themselves to non-edible samples. I found this offensive.I think they did this at various bulk stores once or twice a week even if they weren't shopping there. They also said they relied strictly on donations to clothe the kids -what will happen when tuition, phones, computers, cars, and other expenses come up?

PJ's momma said...

Wow, Franky, what a great post! You really made me think - I am mulling over your last sentence. That really sums up life, doesn't it? Thank you!

I too take the toiletries. Hubby travels a lot for business and he does too. We donate them to a place that serves homeless kids. They get showers there, and they have to have a new bar of soap each time, among other things. Hygiene laws and all that. They love getting that stuff and it keeps their costs down. The hotel factors that into the price of the room, but it can really help other organizations operating on a shoestring budget.

NJGal51 said...

I take the soaps, lotions, shampoo, etc. and give them to an organization that sends them to the troops and gives them to veterans hospitals and homes.

I too remember TFW crowing about how she scored all of that discounted cereal and we opined that she should have taken a couple and left some for others. It's just like last year at the convention where "the word on the street" was that she had to have at least 8 of everything.

I bought a gross of toothbrushes from my dentist. They were for a mission. He donated a LOT of tubes of toothpaste, which would not have shipped very well. So, the toothbrushes were shipped out and the toothpaste was taken to the local health dept. where they would be given to children and adults free of charge. Everybody won.

I use the hotel freebies so I don't have to drag along shampoo, soap, etc. I have taken the soaps occasionally when I knew there was a need with the family next door. They were
in need more than they were not in need and they were thankful for every little thing. A half-eaten cake, a used mattress, an old keyboard were all trash to me and filled a need for them.

I haven't posted in forever, but had to come out of lurking to applaud admin for this topic. Kudos. There are so many examples of TFW testing morality, or just common courtesy, in her grifting. When reading the new post I immediately thought of her accepting gifts, large and small, from fans, and I cannot recall her even once saying, "No thank you, but please donate instead." Just as she could and should make a Twitter statement asking her fans not to comment on her ex on her twitter feed, she could and should also make a statement letting her fans know she does not accept gifts for herself or for her kids, and they will be passed along to people who need the help. Done and done. It is so wrong that she doesn't, and she'd come off as such a good person if she did.
But then, this is a women who re-sells items donated to her instead of passing them along to another who needs them.

I look at TFW as a big, empty void. She's trying to fill that void in her life with stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. Other people have 2 or 3 kids, she has to have more (I also think she never wanted to have to work so she planned a huge family because, well, how can she be expected to work when she has so many kids to take care of?). A 4,000 sq ft house is big enough for them, but she has to have 7,000. A couple acres is plenty, so she has to have 24. One or two cars is all she needs, so she has to have 3. There is something so desperate about her gimme-gimme-gimme attitude. It goes beyond her obvious trashiness. She doesn't seem to ever think she has enough, so she is constantly looking for more, no matter what it is or where it comes from.

Sadly, she became known for being demanding and greedy, and it's part of what ruined her career. Now she sits, her money dwindling away, wondering why she's not on TV. She can't help but grift, but she also lacks the insight to see what her reputation as a grifter is costing her. It's costing her what she wants most, which is a media career. That's a pretty high price for some toilet paper and gift cards.

I'm laughing at the hotel toiletries conversation. I was in Jamaica for a week and saved all the lotions and toiletries. My hair is very fine and I only use certain shampoos and conditioners. My daughter in law is an occupational therapist and she takes them into nursing homes and gives them to the elderly residents. They just love getting them. I saved so many of them that my luggage was over the weight limit. It killed me to have throw them all away not to mention I looked ridiculous. Getting rid of them though put me back under 50lbs. Franky - I think this is one of your best, if not the best, posts here. I agree with your sediments (sic) 100%.

Someone mentioned the little shampoos and lotions that hotels provide to guests. I do collect those whenever I stay overnight away from home, but I donate them to a local church group that runs a shelter for battered women and their children. They in turn place them into "gift bags" for newcomers.

Another thought-provoking article Admin and thank you. It made me realize why I don't like the coupon-clipping shows very much - because I feel that the extreme couponers are actually exhibiting greed in a way, scooping up numerous quantities of an item and thereby leaving less for others (especially if their shelves are already plenty full). It makes me feel uncomfortable, and this article helped me to see why it does.

I think debt is one of the BIGGEST problems we are facing today. Culturally it's become acceptable and this is a very bad thing. People have also been priced out of things like homes and education such that they have no choice.

We are just SLOWLY starting to recognize it's a bad thing but it came far too late for many people. It's a problem that IMO should be front page news next to all the disasters and violence and royal spawn.

I love the tone of what Kristin said.

I think what was most telling about the sudden leaking of Kate's "Asian, slant eyes" photo wasn't so much that she was unapologetic about a racial gesture, although I believe it was done without malice and innocently, was that it represents the the life of excess they were living.
They had money and goodies pouring in constantly and Kate had the nerve to say who is she to turn away gifts from fans?
I'll tell you who you are, Kate. You're a woman who had and has more than all of your needs met. Your children too. You do not need any gift or freebies from here on out. You haven't for a long, long, long time.
Yet, you take without any remorse or pang of conscience. You twist it into some sort of sick Christian ethos, that God chose you to receive wealth and the good life.
Maybe, just maybe, God keeps these gifts coming your way as a way of testing you, to see if you might begin to pay if forward and use your power to help others. When the cameras are not rolling. That does not count at all.

There is a difference between going after a freebee(in terms of entitlement) and having one given to you, because you happen to be at the right place at the right time. I had a guy offering to pay for my breakfast at Dunky Donuts, I assured him I can pay for it, and he insisted, and wanted nothing in return. After a few seconds I gave in. So I was in Menards and they were having their 15% off stuff the paperbag, and I had 2 bags, but when I got up to check out they said one bag to a customer, so I looked at the guy in back of me, he had no bag, so I gave him the bag. If there are freebees at the food store, I might take one or not take one.

As for the reality shows, that is what these people signed on for, getting paid to put their life on TV, sell their privacy for trips, remodeling, new furniture, clothes, cars etc. never earning a damn thing, almost a cheat/easy way to have what takes most average/normal/mediocre people half their lives to earn, working a job or up to 3 jobs to have those things. And some of these reality people have no conscious, no shame, or even want to give back, they think they are entitled, it is their right, and in their twisted minds they earned it, cause they exist and everybody has to love them/worship them, provide for them and not criticize them, cause they are always right and you are wrong.
This is how I see it.

I've always thought that people who constantly lust after stuff and things and the tangibles in life may just be trying to make up for something missing in the intangible part of their life. What's missing, TFW?

This is from a sermon given this morning. It was shared by a friend.

-Evil is the lack of awareness of others

-Evil people delude themselves that they are perfect and all others are WRONG

-Conscience is our connection with God

-Evil ones must constantly justify their actions to prove that they are right and perfect

-As we mature we become more other-centred and less self-centered

-Evil has no power in itself, it is only the absence of Good.

God also said that the Israelites should not take more manna than they required daily, to trust in Him to provide each day's needs. And sure enough, if they did take more than a day's worth, it got stinky and rotten.

Whether you're religious or not, isn't that a great metaphor? What IS the point of all this stuff we don't really need? It will just get stinky and rotten.

Clearing the shelves of sale items by extreme couponers/shoppers drives me crazy too. Someone in my town is doing this and when I find out who... I'll probably do nothing. Never fails though, great deal on tuna, pasta or sauce, other canned or dried goods and I can count on the store selling out in the first few days. Now I live in a small town, so I doubt there's a run on albacore. Some where in my town is a cheap food hoarder with tuna breath; I'll sniff 'em out.

In the Christian tradition our model prayer says "Give us this day our daily bread" which asks God to assure we have what we need, no more and no less.

God tells the crop growers of Israel to not harvest the outer rows of produce but to leave them for the hungry to harvest for themselves.

The concept of having only the amount you need and providing the poor with the rest is deeply rooted in the Judeochristian tradition.

Extreme couponing is impressive but can be very selfish if there isn't enough for everyone. Those big packages of one-person sized chips goes on sale pretty rarely but when they do it's impossible to get one. I can just see people stocking up with a dozen of those for lunches. It's frustrating and unfair.

TFW's "bucket list" is exhausting. I get that people want to live life to the fullest, but to me, that's not taking lavish trips all over the earth.
It should be about personal achievements, not checking off the next destination you visit, the next restaurant you eat at or whatever material thing you gain.
TFW should have furthering her education on her list, as well as reaching out to her community and paying back what was given to her.
I can tell you that exploring TFW's selfish ways makes me check myself, and I think others here do the same. I know I could never be so selfish, self-involved and inwardly focused, but I've got work to do and in a weird way, I thank TFW for showing me where greed can lead any of us.
It is a cautionary tale. Perhaps Kate was never a devout Christian as she proclaimed to be (nor Jon, really), but if she was, she has strayed far from the path of righteousness.

It's like saying "here's your SNAP money, now go buy some beer". That's not what it's meant for!
It's abuse. Coupons are to help you, not feed you for free.
Same for these extreme couponers. It's a polite way to say hoarders and thieves. At least it was before coupon scan codes changed and these hoarders would plan and plot to get as much free loot as possible.
I'm all for lowering your grocery bill with coupons. I use them and take advantage of sales and store brands (mostly save money with store brands; coupons primarily are for highly processed food). But, they should not be abused or used to hoard the store's entire stock of items because you can, and leave nothing for anyone else.
The whole concept has always repulsed me.
In the end, when you pay 10% for your goods' full worth, guess who pays more?
Me, so screw you.
You might as well be a shoplifter.

She would say that there's always someone who needs it more than we do. I'm so grateful to the daughter for sharing that story and that her mother, poor as she was, taught me a new way to be generous.

Another of my favorite passages that applies whether you are religious or not. Basically store up the intangible treasures, love and so on, don't hoard "stuff."

TFW stored up lots of things on Earth and what does she have to show for it? She needs a giant gated property and body guards to protect it all. What's the point if you have to worry about yourself and all your stuff all so much?

Those people who OD on extreme couponing, are greedy. What is the point of using coupons for stuff you do not use. The thrill of the hunt/hoard? My favorite one is the woman who bought cat food, treats, litter and they did not even have a cat. Her reason: it was free! I would not have anything against a person who was doing that for an animal shelter, a womens shelter, homeless shelter or soup kitchen, but to do it to display it in a room in your house to look like a store, not storage room is just greed/hoarder.
Just like taking the stuff from the hotel, when most hotels clean the rooms, they toss all that stuff, so if you take it, donate, you paid for it. Same with the rolls, at restaurants, if you don't take them, they get tossed. Better to take them then waste food. I see this at a lot of places, dig up plants, they don't move them or save them, they toss them, perfectly good plants. We are a very wasteful society.

The American mindset is very interesting to me in regards to possessions. Here, we have the thought that bigger is better. Therefore we "need" bigger cars, bigger houses and lots space for ourselves and our things (most of which we could do without!). In other countries, many families live quite happily in houses/spaces just a fraction of the size!

I admire people who work with charities to donate free/cheap things but those who take freebies and/or go crazy with coupons just to stash them at their house? I don't get it. I saw an episode of extreme couponing with a single lady who was stock piling diapers for her future children. Um, if I was dating her and saw all those diapers I would run for the hills!!

America IS quite interesting in terms of the big mac lifestyle. Maybe it's because our very roots started with just this massive country with so much land they gave it away for free at times. Europe makes you feel like a giant in a little person's house which is part of the culture shock. Everything is smaller. Even a really nice hotel several hundred American dollars a night is no bigger than a cheap hotel room. Portion sizes are smaller, bathrooms and closets are smaller, cars are smaller. It's interesting how you can adjust so rapidly to the big lifestyle and then when you try to do something else all of a sudden, it's a shock.

Ha! Was just talking about this yesterday. You really need to understand that we are so spoiled here in America with hotels. Even the "value" brands such as Hampton Inn and Fairfield are palatial compared to the higher end hotels in Europe.
We get queen and king beds, a sitting area, nice bathroom with amenities, usually nice quality linens and free breakfast.
Europe? Not so much!

And guess what? Bill Gates was able to buy Leonardo da Vinci's notebook for a gazillion dollars and I'm not even "jellus" of his wealth and lifestyle. First, he worked hard for what he has, secondly he is genuinely grateful for what life gave him and last lastly he gives back. In a BIG way!

TFW never worked hard in her life, -not even raising her own kids-, she never was grateful ( The curt "yes please" she wrote back to compagnies offering her freebies was one of the thing in RH's book that I found really offensive..) and she definitely is not giving back. Not even a Chipotle gift card.

How can one be 'jellus" of a life with so little real accomplishments?

But upon googlong it, it seems that most hotels only toss opened bottles, and leave the unopened bottles for the next guest.

My company has many, many people who travel a lot. Most people open one bottle, and bring home an unopened bottle, which they put in a bin we have here at work for such things. Once a month the bin contents are donated to a shelter. They do the same with the toothpaste and toothbrushes that you get from dentist at a cleaning.

this is equal parts ridiculous and sad. Did this person never go to school herself, and have packed lunches? Honestly - it's actually quite simple.

First - know your own child's likes and dislikes. If your child is like my son, he won't want a banana in his lunch, but would like a small container of strawberries or grapes. A sandwich of some kind, or perhaps a bagel with cream cheese. Or perhaps a simple wrap made from flour tortilla, sliced meat, lettuce and cheese. A bottle of water, a few cookies, and a baggie of pretzels, chips or crackers.

I don't understand why any parent would freak out over packing their child a lunch. Pick items your child would like to eat, that are also healthy mixed with a little something sweet for a dessert.

No one should need an entire book devoted to school lunches.

Great Topic. Someone said, can't remember who, that "Debt is the modern form of slavery"

I firmly believe that. I also firmly believe in taking what you need, and leaving the rest for others.

I am not financially rich, but I am financially free. Besides, the only thing we take with us are our memories, our true legacy we leave behind is how people remember us. Money can't buy that.

franky

===========

This whole topic is on point for me.

My daughter's old car died and she found another one with 100K miles--which was 100K miles less than the last one had on it!

Her grandmother offered to pay for the new car, but my daughter felt she should pay her own way. She did borrow the cash (in the form of a cashier's check) from her grandma and will make payments to her grandmother's account.

Here's the kicker. We took the cashier's check for $8,000 to the dealer.

Guess who is looked at as a potential terrorist or drug lord? Guess who is considered suspicious? NOT THE ONES BORROWING.

My daughter and I had to give our social security numbers and all kinds of personal information so the Federal government could confirm we were "honest" because we did not borrow. The salesman gave each of us forms and told us we would have to fill them out completely so the government could check on WHY we had cash.

Debt the new slavery? It must be. The bookkeeper actually floundered in figuring out our paperwork because "no one ever pays cash." This completely floored me, I have to say.

I came to this realization a few years ago Admin, and decided I would get rid of all credit cards. It was a very painful difficult process, and I even took money out of my retirement fund to pay some of them off. Then living on just what I earned, and learning to save for bigger items was tough too. I had become accustomed to putting stuff on credit if I couldn't pay for it at the moment.

The first hard lesson I learned and relearned was that I had been living beyond my means for years.

One time, my hairdryer broke and I didn't have money in that two-week budget to buy a new one. Thankfully, it was winter so I would wash my hair and then lean over the heater vent to air dry it. Then I was able to put $20 into the next bi-monthly budget for a new hair dryer and cut back on the grocery budget a bit.

My only debt is my mortgage, but that will be paid off in 4 years. Although it's not easy to have to wait for certain things (right now I'm saving for a new bed), I enjoy searching out deals or buying an item that has been gently used for much less than the same item would cost brand new. Plus, I cannot overstate how good it feels not to receive credit card bills in the mail anymore. Just the regular bills for phone, electricity, garbage, etc.

The only transaction that I can think of that would require that is if you purchased the car with actual cash(not a check) and the amount was over $10,000. That type of transaction would require them to fill out a Currency Transaction Report to be filed with the IRS.

But for an $8000 check? It doesn't make any sense to me. I used to work in a bank, and I don't know of any government rule that would require that for a check. Did you ask the dealer why it was necessary?

My choice is that TFW did NOT bake the cookies because there is not a single photo of baking in progress...something TFW has always done!

Watching 60 Minutes now here. Once in awhile a commercial is very moving and I thought the Chevy commercial featuring various dads with their sons doing things like baseball or taking them out to a beautiful canyon was a really sweet tribute to fatherhood. Nice to see that special relationship honored.

Virginia Pen Mom-I thought what that dealer did sounded fishy. Here are the IRS guidelines when buying a car with a cashiers check. It applies to transactions over $10,000 which of course, yours was not. But even if it was over $10,000 no report would have to be filed:

"The purchase of a vehicle with a cashier's check, bank draft, traveler's check or money order with a face amount of more than $10,000 is not treated as cash and a business does not have to file Form 8300 when it receives them."

http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Report-of-Cash-Payments-Over-$10,000-Received-in-a-Trade-or-Business---Motor-Vehicle-Dealership-Q&As

But--I did find another article which may explain why they asked you for that info and it had nothing to do with the government. Apparently, some dealers ask all that info so that they can run a credit report on you, even if you're not financing with them. Interesting article:

http://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/car-dealership-credit-report-scams-and-the-patriot-act.html

The dealer had no right to ask you for that information.

Reminds me of the time I started to become friendly with a disabled woman. Then I heard her bragging to a group about the 5 free wheelchairs she had gotten, and I already knew she was selling one of her 2 current electric wheelchairs on Craigslist. It really bothered me and I had to step away from the friendship. I believe it was immoral of her to sell for cash what she had been given. Perhaps some deserving person did not get an electric wheelchair because the organization that gave it to her only had one to give away that year. And to work the system to get more than you need, then sell it for cash...it just threw me for a loop. I would never even consider doing such a thing.

What's funny is we really should be more suspicious of people buying expensive cars with NO money down. If you can't even bring in a few thousand to the table you probably shouldn't be financing.

Instead we're suspicious of all cash deals.

Very interesting topic, admin. KY pastor, the sermon at our church this am was about prayer and asking for what you need, and then bringing up the prosperity preachers who imply that if you don't get all the monetary things you want them you must not be praying enough. The point of the sermon was that you may not get what you want, but you will get what you need, if you ask God. (Our minister is a big Rolling Stones fan).
He also quoted from a recent book, I cannot remember the female authors name, but it was a book about prayer. And that all prayers can be put into three broad categories: thanks, help, or WOW! It was an interesting and new way to think about prayer for me.

I drove a lot this weekend, going to beach and visiting family and running errands. I listened to an interview an Entertainment Weekly editor did with one of the producers of Pawn Stars on the History Channel. He was on a trip to Las Vegas with a friend, passed a pawn shop, and started talking about how interesting it could be to see what came in and hear stories about things. He said ”I told my production assistant to find the pawn shop with the most fun people.” He said they got really lucky finding the shop featured on the show, since there are three generations working there and each with their own personality and interests.
Note, he did not say they were looking for the greediest or best looking or most obnoxious or demanding people. The most FUN people.
also he said they purposely do not deal with the personal lives of the stars except in a very superficial way. And none of the stuff is planted, they just film what comes inn. They do a lot of work in editing, because they match items that seem to go together, and not necessarily in chronological order. They have well over 200 episodes and expect to go to 350.

WalktheTalk, yes! I work at a food bank and we package those hotel toiletries into packets because we serve quite a few homeless clients. Those 'on the go' packets of soap, shampoo/conditioner, lotion, wipes, chapstick, hand sanitizer, etc., really help them. A new client told me that the jail calls them indigent packages. That made me gulp and I had to reassure him we don't see him that way at all but he just kept laughing and saying that's what he got in jail. As Phil from Duck Dynasty would say, "Heeee!"

Also, we get half-used boxes of feminine products, diapers, Depends, etc., and we repackage them into quantities to give away, i.e., 8 diapers, 10 maxi pads, etc. People are so relieved when they're available.

Thanks for pointing out another resource that people can easily contribute towards, even if it's things they took from a hotel or a few items picked up at the drugstore or dollar store. Toothpaste and deodorant are also very popular and readily available for $1.

We recently went to the drugstore for toothpaste and I asked the clerk, "Am I seeing that right? 50 cents?" Sure enough. It was 'special' toothpaste that got discontinued (we can see why, who pays $8.49 for toothpaste?) and they were offloading it all. My husband wanted to take it ALL. We needed a couple tubes and he wanted to donate the rest. We had a big argument in the aisle (you know, when you whisper-yell through clenched teeth, LOL) and I said we needed to leave some for others who NEED that bargain. So we took 18 and there was still a lot left for others, probably about 40. I thought of Kate cleaning out those shelves previously and I just hate that mentality. Now if someone who is struggling took every tube because they know it'll last a long time, that's different. But when someone is just enjoying the bargain and can afford to do whatever they want, it's selfish. I felt weird taking 18 but it's all gone already.

Those hoarders - I can't watch those extreme couponing shows. I see the rack systems they build in their basements or whatever and just want to cry. All those toiletries and detergents, paper products, and cleaning products just sitting there. THOSE are the things people often go without. Don't even get me started on their 400 cans of soup or whatever. They really should donate it. Keep doing what they do and then give it away. I saw one guy who did just that but most of them hang on to it like millions of little trophies. It's sad.

Admin, great post!

I don't generally watch the extreme couponing shows because I find it kind of like rubbernecking on the highway after an accident has happened. And frankly, the coupons are usually for products that I don't buy anyway, so unless I want to try it out, I feel it's wasting my money to buy something I don't need/wouldn't use. I also tend to buy generic/store brand and I find that's often times cheaper then the name brands even with the coupon. The trick is to look at the per unit price on the price tag and compare that to similar products. That tells you if you're really saving or not.

What I did find admirable about the Extreme Couponing shows were those people who did know how to coupon but who turned around and kept only what they needed and donated the rest to their local food pantry/food bank. That, to me, is someone who understands how to use coupons for the greater good.

Other stuff like food loses its flavor.
To the person who donated the pads, thanks, I now know where to donate, adult diapers.
As for TFW, baking cookies, make the dough and freeze it, or gee, TFW, you have all day to bake, kids gone about 9 hours during school time. Or as someone here sugested, she is getting ready to go on a trip, didn't she do something like that last year, baked, and then went on trip?

**********************************

How would you decide which family "really needed" the card? I'm sorry, but I would be offended if a stranger did that to me, not grateful. It's incredibly patronizing. "Oh, you look too poor to afford the meal. Allow me to buy it for you because I am so noble."

As for summer hw...its not demanded. I do make my kids read 4 books over the summer...but thats it. Summer vacation is just that...a Vacation. if my kids had learning issues I would do more...but they don't...so summer vacation is just that.

So let’s review what we have here. A channel whose programming is centered almost exclusively on whites, with a majority of its programs centered on “abnormal” families and individuals, presented not for any educational or instructive value, but for your entertainment, demonstrating TLC’s complete and utter contempt for both the “stars” of its shows and for you as an audience. And the rotten, mildewed cherry on top of this bilge-pie is that the entirety of TLC’s programs are presented with this veneer of tolerance and understanding, so they can pass off their twisted side-show as somehow healthy and admirable. OK Stash, I really don't think that this is a credible witness. The Ashley she's talking about is not the former babysitter judging by her other tweets. I think it's her child. In a house of 7 growing up we did not have written instructions on how to get a cookie. I fear with TFW there will be at least one incident of accessing the cookies incorrectly, turning what should have been a loving and nurturing act(baking treats) into an episode of control and guilt.
I never counted cookies, and I don't believe my Mother did either. If she did it was in her head and not announced. TFW way of baking/cooking seems to be all about, "Look what I did, are you impressed? I have counted my doses of love and they come to exactly 673." I don't think most Parents think that way, I honestly don't. I think a more appropriate title to her book would be "Control is in The Mix."

"what is Miam Miam?" (148)

"Miam miam" is french equivalent to "yum-yum"... Funny how onomatopee can differ so much from one language to another. An english dog goes bow-wow, a french dog goes ouah-ouah; an english rooster goes cock-a-doodle-doo and a french one goes cocorico. And Kate Gosselin in any langage is nutso mother from hell... (I know: it's not an onomatopea. It just made me feel good writing it.)

The dumb cooking baking questions have resumed...

@Kateplusmy8 how do you keep all the food fresh?

I thought Goody goes for months without mentioning Jon. She's at it again already today, with the child support nonsense,

An interesting thought about credibility.

Jon & TFW both sounded credible enough in the beginning. Then the lies started, and something just felt 'off'. Credible, not so much. That went on for a while.

Then Jon decided he couldn't say the lies anymore, and that's when we saw him fading away, melting into chair, saying nothing.

Then he had his months of craziness, and TFW's lies got even more outrageous.

Then TFW got her own show and there wasn't *any* effort put into credibility. Authenticity and credibility on her part were gone, never to return, if they were ever even there to start with.

Jon, on the other hand, after his months of craziness, has the ring of truth. Something TFW has never heard of.

@Pretty_Bird_0 @Kateplusmy8 Humor? I don't think do. I'm not a vulgar person nor do I use sexual innuendo when tweeting about Kate.

But she does with Jon.

No one here is doing any school shopping yet, everyone is waiting to do our shopping on during the tax free weekend. Guess PA doesn't do that? School supplies and clothes all tax free. And I haven't even thought about school lunches. Too busy enjoying summer and having my kids and kids friends around. That's the saddest thing. Kate could be out with her kids, enjoying a picnic in the park, a summer festival, the fair, the pool, summer camp, etc. Instead she is inside allegedly "baking" a ton of cookies she doesn't need and counting down the days til she is free of her kids. Sad.

In the meantime, Goody is sharpening her math skills, figuring out the number of cookies per a kid that Kate baked.

She can do long division?

No she makes her kids eat frozen cookies.

Looks like the sheep are mad that Jon called KK his FW and now.

They are calling him TFH guess they can't be original.

But an onomatopoeia is an imitation of a sound in a word, such as BOOM or BUZZ or HISS! How does yum, yum, replicate a sound made?

This is exactly what I think. Non-working mom, home all summer with the kids, and can barely get in the car on a weekend to go shopping and to Chipotle, of course with only half of them in tow. A summer in the house, or at the pool, probably with only your sibs around, is some form of arrested development, missed opportunities. We know she has help, and still cannot take them, n any number, anywhere. Museums, art classes, movies, day camps - we know it's not the money no matter how much she implies it is. Simply bad parenting from a very selfish woman.

I've noticed that this person often presents as being a few fries short of a Happy Meal, so it's not surprising that she would tweet this...and believe that the "witness" was actually at Kate's house!

Now back to chopping weeds. :(

The fans seem to be very shallow thinkers. They say the haters are making a fuss about cookies. No, it's about TFW's need for ego stroking, her exaggeration, and her lying.

Meanwhile, back on reality shows that are actually on TV currently...
The Bachelorette is promoting ” the most shocking Bachelorette Episode EVER” for tonight. Don't they have a most shocking episode ever every season on this show?
Big Brother is more fun than ever to watch! The twists and turns and eleventy-dozen alliances among the hamsters are fascinating!
Other countries have had a celebrity Big Brother, if the USA edition had one maybe TFW could go on it. Everyone might get a one to three month vacation from TFW, she would get on TV, win win all around!

OrangeCrusher1 said...

Sheeple brains, no use in trying to figure them out. Milo sees herself as sweet and well mannered, Goody says she never uses foul language. And they think calling Jon TFH is what, a reverse joke? Toss in the bizarre q's they ask Kate about freezers and child rearing, and off we go.

Why? A seven-year-old should be reading books like "The Snow Leopard: The True Story of an Amazing Rescue," ways to help endangered species, or "Little House In The Big Woods" (Wilder)... NOT a Kate Gosselin picture book!

I think that if you are looking for a credible source to confirm that someone actually baked cookies, you might have a credibility problem! Especially if the person is a cookbook author.

Also, if Chipotle gifted the card, isn't she now required to disclose it in the tweet?

Clothing is not taxed in PA, with some exceptions, like formal wear or swimsuits. Not yet. Give it time.
