The morality of freebies

Reality T.V. often makes a spectacle of lavishing families with expensive gifts and trips. Usually, for free.

The Duggars in China

Kristin Wong, an award-winning writer and film maker (MSN, Forbes), has been thinking a lot about the morality of personal finance lately. In a recent blog she tackled the question of whether it is moral to accept a freebie you don't really need or want. Kristin had this to say about this controversial issue:

Recently, I took advantage of a free pair of movie tickets to see “The Lone Ranger,” a movie I really have no desire to see. But the tickets were free! And they were limited, so without giving it much thought, I nabbed them. I needed them; they were free.
The Roloffs in Hawaii
Practically, this may have been a good decision. After all, it could be a fun, free date night idea. A good, cheap way to spend a Friday night with Brian.

But morally, this was kind of a crappy thing for me to do. Because maybe a hard-working mom saw the ‘Free Lone Ranger Ticket!’ link. And maybe she got excited because her daughter wanted to see it — but oops! Someone who doesn’t even appreciate the movie already got the last one because, “*shrug* It’s free.”
Part of being frugal, at least the moral part of it, is not taking more than what you need — not just because you can’t afford it, but because you want to leave more for everyone else. In this way, I think there is morality in thrift. What I did wasn’t frugal. It was cheap.

To me, the ongoing cheap vs. frugal debate proves that there’s morality in frugality. When does your frugality negatively affect others? Just because it’s a practical, sound financial decision for your budget doesn’t mean it’s a good decision overall. There are ethical questions to consider, which makes it seem like there is indeed morality in personal finance.
Money-related issues go beyond a cost-benefit analysis. We have to ask ourselves, is this hurting anyone?

Thanks for your common "cents", Kristin.

I wonder how the former wife melts oil in a pan?

that was her "menu Monday" version which was probably lifted from someplace. "her" cookbook version is different and it says do some things in a pot and other things in a pan and never directs them to be added together. It is a mess

Woah! (sic) I looked at the pictures from her website. While the directions suggest it's a one pot meal, the pictures suggest she browned the meal alone (no garlic or onions with it) in a frying pan. Now I'm confused.

Oh well. It's not like I was going to actually
make a batch.

In Kate's case she gives it one of her dirty looks and shrieks she's in charge and that is NEVER going to change.

Dee3...Wow! Good luck with your surgery. Please keep us posted.

dee3, blessings to you. It's so hard to have to endure things when you have a phobia. It's not something you can be talked out of, talk yourself out of, or just stop feeling, as much as you'd like to. Those who don't share your particular phobia simply cannot understand the level of discomfort involved, which makes it all worse, I think. Just do your best, that's all you can ask of yourself, and please know you have a fellow phobia sufferer in me. Mine is needles.

Good question. Maybe she stores her oil in one of her five freezers.

If this cookbook does get published, I can just imagine the questions that will be tweeted to her regarding the recipes.

What happened to Ask Kate-part two? She said she had 25 questions that she was going to answer. She only answered 16 and said that she would be posting Part 2 today. She did manage to sell one, count it, one, cookbook today.

Is she upset with her tweeties because she spent all that time and effort to answer 16, count em, 16 questions, and all she got in return was one cookbook sale?

She'll probably make some excuse, and then she'll hold off and use the other Q&A's for next week's post.

Lol, Chef. I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know that when using dry herbs, you use less than when using fresh. Because dried herbs are generally more oncentrated than fresh herbs, the ideal ratio is three times the amount of fresh herbs as dry. In her Menu Monday turkey chili, TFW does the opposite for cilantro. She's no cook...

I want to thank everyone for your support. I really appreciate it....and I really mean that. :)

Meanwhile...I only learned last night about a certain blog being shut down by its administrator/owner....and I'm quite upset about this....because 1.) I enjoyed reading over there from time to time but mainly because 2.) I'm a HUGE proponent of free speech.

When I would read there...I didn't always completely understand what I was reading...due to a combination of insider information and the use of acronyms that I was unfamiliar with...so I may not have caught everything that was written there. And I do realize that there could be lots of information that I'm not privy to....and may never be privy to...that might offer a perfectly reasonable explanation for what happened. I AM aware of this.

And if this were a strictly isolated incident...but I've read around on his sites...and some of his twitter comments....and I see a pattern of what I perceive to be bullying in response to perceived bullying....use of intimidation and threats....exposing personal information without verification, etc.

And in fact, I want to be really careful about what I even write here because frankly, this guy worries me....and that alone concerns me....and I want to stay off his radar. And why should I have to feel worried about having an opinion because of him?

This reminds me of years ago...back during the hey-day of Kate's show...when she was a media-darling.....and many of us couldn't figure out why the heck they were lauding bad behavior.....and how frustrated we were by this. This guy has been on multiple shows, apparently...Anderson Cooper, Dr. Drew....and been lauded in the media as some sort of champion against bullying. But what I'm seeing is a lot of bullying behavior in response...along with intimidation tactics...and possible slander/libel on the internet.

WHY is bad behavior being lauded as role-model behavior....in all these instances?
Administrator wrote a comment about the right way and the wrong way to handle bullying....and IMO, his way is the wrong way.....and I abhor any sort of silencing via intimidation. I may not agree with someone's opinion but I respect their right to have it....ESPECIALLY when it's someone who has purposely made themselves a public figure.

And I want to say to @ Hoosier Girl~I read a comment you wrote several entries back...related to "the Marines", I have to say that this guy has quite an extensive resume for someone so young....and it may ALL be completely true and if it is, kudos to him.
But I have to add that if it is, I don't think his behavior reflects well on the Marines, unfortunately.

I may have already said too much...this may not even get posted...but I just want to say that this guy really worries me. Personally, I think his behavior borders on dangerous.....when it comes to free speech. And that's just my opinion. And I want to add that I was VERY relieved when I saw that this blog was still up and running.

I have no idea how this HCI thing works but I wonder if maybe there is just no risk to them?

I understand they have said they are her publisher and this is not self published, but that doesn't mean they didn't make Kate pay all the upfront costs and she bears the full risk. Maybe they only pay her back for all those expenses if the book actually churns a certain profit. They don't seem to act panicked or doing anything desperate that I can tell. I don't think it's any skin off their back if (when) this flops.

=============

These deals do exist, and they are the worst possible for the author. Only the most naïve writers do it. You're right that the hook is for the company to claim you're not self-published when in fact you are. **If you pay, you're self-published.**

One company that offers this says that you pay all the costs up front, and "when" you sell 3,000 copies, you'll get all your costs back. Throughout, you earn only 10% per book while they keep the profits. An acquaintance asked me to look over her contract with this company and asked my opinion. As nicely as I could, I said, "RUN!" But she signed it and lost a bundle on her book. Like HCI, they have no real marketing power.

That type of deal is like saying, "You go into business for yourself, and if you do well, I'll share the profits with you. Of course, I'll have ownership of the company throughout. You just put in the money, time, work, talent, and risk. I'll do the rest...."

Hi to Dee3 and to Kiwi! Hope you're on the mend, Dee3. Kiwi, your name never fails to bring to mind Kate's comment about birds without arms, lol.

OH....and if we're choosing male celebrities to come to a party....I choose Vincent D'Onofrio. I just think he's....yum. :D

I wonder what makes TFW think she's a good cook, when she's clearly not.
I guess the same reason that she thinks she'd be a good talk show host?

looking at her turkey corn mess, she has the oil and onions in one pan and the turkey crap in another but never says to combine them both. She is very sloppy with her directions and this "cookbook" is a joke

============

This reminds me of an exercise we used to do with kids in a writing group. You tell the group to write directions for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Everyone thinks it will be easy....

Then you have each of the kids read his paper aloud while the adult follows the directions literally. "Put the peanut butter on the bread" means you stand the jar on top of the loaf, for example. It's really fun and very effective at teaching kids about the precision needed in writing directions.

Kate thought writing a cookbook would be easy--just as the kids did--and with the same results!

Did you say Vincent D'Onofrio? I adored him in SVU Criminal Intent. He fascinated me and I missed him very much when Jeff Goldbloom (ugh) took his place.

And that should be Jeff Goldblum. I'm not one of his fans.
