Jodie Foster's Golden Globe speech: 'The fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds'

The actress's acceptance of her Lifetime Achievement Award was a little streaming consciousness, but she talked about reality shows, and her lust for privacy.

"You know, you guys might be surprised, but I am not Honey Boo Boo Child. No, I’m sorry, that’s just not me. It never was and it never will be. Please don’t cry because my reality show would be so boring. I would have to make out with Marion Cotillard or I’d have to spank Daniel Craig’s bottom just to stay on the air. It’s not bad work if you can get it, though. But seriously, if you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you’d had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too might value privacy above all else. Privacy. Someday, in the future, people will look back and remember how beautiful it once was. I have given everything up there from the time that I was 3-years-old. That’s reality-show enough, don’t you think?"
Last August, Jodie Foster released some scathing comments about child stardom, calling it the "cruelty of a life lived as a moving target" and said you have to "submerge beneath the foul air and breathe through a straw." Previously, Foster had been fairly polite about being famous.

Love is deviant?

I shudder at what your marriage must be if you think 2 adults that love eachother are deviant.

Southern Belle said...

The majority of people are heterosexual. Those who aren't deviate from the norm. Hence the use of the word "deviant."

de·vi·ant/ˈdi vi ənt/ Show Spelled [dee-vee-uh nt] Show IPA
adjective
1. deviating or departing from the norm; characterized by deviation: deviant social behavior.
noun
2. a person or thing that deviates or departs markedly from the accepted norm.

It used to be that homsexuals had to hide in the closet because they feared not being accepted.

Now, thoe of us who are opposed to their deviant lifestyle are in the same position.

WTF??? That's kind of a random, out of the blue statement and please don't try and poke people here into an argument. Next subject, please.

**************************************************Hey, no fair to tell this poster what opinion she has to share. It goes hand in hand with other posts about Jodie feeling comfortable about speaking about her sexuality. Obviously, this poster, Sounthern Belle does not feel comfortable with it. Or has a different view than YOU.

I personally agree. Don't shove your sexuality down my face. As I don't shove my heterosexual life down your face.

Your post wasn't random at all. The discussion was about Jodie mentioning her partner in her acceptance speech, and some felt that because she has pretty much been silent in the private aspects of her life, why would she bring this out at a public awards event. Your opinion is valid. It does seem that there is a growing pressure in society to accept gay partnerships, and if you take the conservative stance on this issue and feel that this kind of relationship goes against your beliefs, you either keep quiet about it or face criticism.

Agree to disagree? Scroll by. The gay community HAMMERS in their private life. Nothing private about most homosexual's lifestyle in Hollywood. Why are other's uncomfortable? because their lifestyle is indeed deviant.

Anon, your post was a little graphic for me. I don't like to think of what gays do alone in the privacy of their homes. That's not homophobic. I also think about what my straight friends in the privacy of theirs.

I like Jodie Foster. But I didn't like her speach. It was...off. It sounded both scripted and like she was totally unprepared. I'm not alone in thinking it was bad, their are many articles that share my opinion. And for someone who claimed she wanted privacy, it was an odd choice to draw so much attention to her personal life.

I enjoy different points of view. Tolerance is a good thing. I doubt any opinions will be changed but it's an interesting topic.

Personally, I wish we would live in a society where the only time someone's sexuality was even relevant was if you wanted to sleep with them.

My heterosexuality is not my defining characteristic. It is only one part of who I am as a whole.

I'm not sure if Southern Belle's feelings stem from religious conviction or not. As a Christian and someone who now attends an evangelical church but who grew up in a more Christian Humanist household and church, I have struggled with this issue. However, I have concluded that Matthew 22:36-40 is truly the final word. ( “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

In the end, it doesn't matter a hill of beans to me who someone wants to have sex with. What matters is being in relationship with my fellow humans.

Chefsummer - Yes, if the definition of deviant as posted earlier is to be applied, then yes, for someone who lives a sexually and socially conservative lifestyle those sexual acts you listed are deviant. They deviate from that person's worldview.

It seems the real question you're asking, at least to me, is "Are those types of sexual acts wrong?" and that comes down to personal ethics which are great to debate but which, in my experience, tend to turn into flame wars when debated on the internet. Personally, I agree that those decisions are best left in the bedroom between consenting adults and we should move on.

I think the Hollywood ladies (who are working) have deflated themselves. I was kind of suspecting that might happen when I read that producers were having a hard time casting people because the inflated boobs didn't fit the character. I think it was Johnny Dep that was looking high and low for a flat chested female to costar with him. I in my mind had recommended Kelly Rippa who is quite actually a very good actress. She was very good in Hope and Faith. I just wanted to share my monumental revelation. Good for the working girls of Hollywood.

Whether discussing heterosexuals or homosexuals this is NOT about the act itself, but about attraction, love, caring for the other person. Good grief, no one wants to know what anyone else does in their bedroom. And, for pete's sake, relationships-truly healthy ones at least-aren't defined by sex! Gay people are asking to be given the same rights as straight people. Period. They want to make end of life decisions for their partner, have access to their partner's health insurance, and to be able to marry the person they love.

In some of these posts, if you substitute the word gay or homosexual with the word black, you can clearly see the eery similarities between biases of the civil rights movement and biases against gay rights. Sadly, this country may not have progressed as far as we'd like to believe. Maybe we just switched the target of the prejudice.

Well, in support of my wonderful brother, I have to say I never thought of him as perverted. He was gay and had a long time partner with whom he was very much in love. He and his friends were the best bunch of guys I've ever known. Kind, funny, hardworking, sensative...

Amazingly, I did not know he was gay until I was in my 30s. Looking back, I must have been pretty self-absorbed. He told me he was HIV positive and that he was gay in the same phone call. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. This was back in the mid-80s when AIDS fever was at its height and everyone in the world was terrified of getting the 'gay disease'.

It took me a few weeks to settle my mind about it, but when I realized that he wasn't some random, faceless person in a crowd, that he was MY BROTHER, it was easy to see him, not a gay guy with HIV. He came with a lifelong backstory, a history of brother-sister love and life that was more important than anything else.

I can't speak for others, but he was my brother for 43 years. To me, he was a brother who was gay, not a gay man who was my brother. BROTHER superceded all else. He was still the same funny, loving, smart, cool guy that he'd always been. I never once, not ever thought of what he did in the PRIVACY of his bedroom.

It's been my experience that if you get to know the person first, it's easy to love them with all their warts and idiosyncrasies.

And I have to add this for Southern Belle, I would bet money that you have gay friends in your personal and work circle and don't even know it. Many gay people are very adept at fitting in when they need to in situations where intolerance is rampant.

For you I wish peace and tolerance. I am not criticizing you, I am saying I'm sorry you've not had the pleasure of knowing people of all types, shapes, sizes and sexual preferences. You've lost out on some great times.

As long as there are people being tortured for just being who they were born to be I think that it is fitting for successful people to show that life is worth living with whatever you have been given. I think that is what Jodie was trying to do.

Since homosexuality has been present in all cultures through all time, and even occurs in the animal kingdom, perhaps variant is a better term for it. Variety starts few fights.

On the contrary, I think Kate might be gay. She has that off-putting trait about here that is quite unpleasant.

I would still love my child if one of them turned out to be gay. A mother's love can't be turned off and on like a switch. I would do everything in my power to help them get better and seek the help of our church to become normal again. If that didn't work I would accept, even though I don't approve.

My biggest concern would be if they decided to bring a child into the world. I can't codone those people raing children under any circumstances.

I think the Hollywood ladies (who are working) have deflated themselves. I was kind of suspecting that might happen when I read that producers were having a hard time casting people because the inflated boobs didn't fit the character.

Hmmmmm. Could that be where Kate disappeared to at Christmastime? A de-boobing? So a producer would hire her for a role? Even Johnny Depp?

Avoid soap, use Cetaphil and the like and i recommend vitamin C serums along with a good moisturizer.

OK, as long as I'm here today, I want to rant about a problem I've been having for the past few months.

And I'm am deadly serious about this - it's not a joke!

I am having trouble peeling hard boiled eggs. Seriously... for all my life (I'm 61) I've boiled them, run cold water over them and peeled them. Now I am having the devil's own time getting them to peel without taking most of the white with the shell.

We boil a dozen at a time, and use them throughout the week in recipes. Here's the glitch: nothing has changed. I am doing it the same way I've always done it, using the same eggs I've always used....

And today, like the past few months, I find myself at the sink just cussing and swearing and finally squashing the damn things in my hands and peeling a lot of white off.

1. How can such a minor thing piss me off so much?

2. What am I doing wrong? It's been the same technique and eggs for years and years?

3. Is there a great GMO chicken conspiracy to make eggs harder to peel?

4. How can something so lifelong change?

5. Am I getting some kind of dementia or hand-eye coordination syndrome that prevents peeling eggs?

Really and truly friends, I cannot believe how frustrated I find myself with these damned eggs.

Interesting side note: during the same time period I am finding the whites don't separate as easily from yolks in raw eggs for baking, etc...

Have eggs changed? Have chickens changed? Am I going to have to give up hardboiled and go to scrambled?

Wahhh.... what's going on? It's like this is the little pebble in the shoe on a long walk. Life as we know it is going to hell in a handbaskit and I'm being undone by peeling eggs...

If any of you have found the same thing happening, or have any suggestions for a stress-free peeling technique, I'd love to hear it.

I don't want to get carted away in a white jacket because I flipped out peeling eggs. How sad would that be?

Me thinks Southern Belle is intentionally trying to divert. Notice that when the conversation started to go away from her topic she brought it right back with even more outrageous statements.

It is NOT just you, believe me. If you look up how to peel eggs, you'll find people swearing by dozens of different methods.
I know for a fact that a fresher egg is harder to peel because the air bubble inside is much smaller, so maybe we're getting fresher eggs in our cartons?
Supermarket eggs and farmers market eggs are equally as responsible for causing me meltdowns!
Sometimes by the time I'm done peeling the egg, it's practically destroyed.
The best result I get is rolling the egg to shatter the shell and peel either under a running faucet or in a bowl of very cold water.

Are you using organic eggs? Check this out:

Sometimes, I’m a little slow to pick up on cause and effect. Let me give you an example. My husband’s family loves deviled eggs, and for years, I’ve been making them by the dozens for different events. A few years ago, I noticed that I was having trouble peeling them. The shells were sticking to the insides, ripping the hard-boiled eggs apart and creating a not-so-attractive side dish for parties.

It never occurred to me that the problem was the type of eggs I was buying. The eggs I buy now are from free-range chickens, and they’re much fresher than the eggs I used to buy from the grocery store. It turns out, the fresher the egg, the more difficult it will be to peel when it’s hard-boiled.

More here on how to peel fresh h/b eggs:

http://www.mnn.com/food/healthy-eating/blogs/use-baking-soda-for-easy-to-peel-hard-boiled-eggs

Anonymous said...

Holy smokes,

Well, thank goodness it isn't JUST me! Tucker, we must be buying eggs from the same chickens. Some of the peeled ones I have are only good for egg salad or chopped on salads.

I can tell there is a membrane right inside the shell and usually I could peel 'under the membrane' and get the shell off in one piece.

OK, the lesson to take away from this is that it's not me, I'm not imagining things, I don't have a syndrome preventing effective peeling and there doesn't seem to be a nationwide chicken conspiracy... whew....

Tweedle, I'll read that article about baking soda... maybe that will be the magic bullet.

Thanks for taking my crisis seriously! DH said I was an idiot to post about it. Of course, he said 'idiot' in the nicest possible way. LOL

I love this blog. Such nice people, with good suggestions and advice. No 5150 hold for me tonight! ha ha

I have the best success w/peeling hard boiled eggs when I shatter them as Tucker's Mom does, and peeling them under running water over a colander to catch the shell pieces....while they're still warm. I've found that if I wait till the eggs are cool, they are a nightmare to peel.

Perm Name - if the eggs are really, really fresh they are the devil to peel - I actually use 1 week old eggs for hard boiling - do you roll the eggs on a flat surface to break up the shell? Also organic/farm fresh are difficult too - have you tried the 'as seen on tv ' - "eggies"?? They are really fun and actually work

Formerly Duped said...

Perm,

Agree with others, peel under cold water, maybe try boiling a little longer than usual.I tap it a little on the counter on one end to start the cracking process. Very strange indeed.

My manicurist suggested a fail-safe method of removing the shells from hard-boiled eggs. The directions take longer to type/read than it takes to do this process:

Once the eggs have cooked, drain all the water out of the pan. Cool the eggs in a cold water bath. Once the eggs have cooled, replace the lid and shake the pan, very fast, for about a minute. When you remove the lid again, the eggs will be mostly peeled. Drain the water, and rinse off the shell remnants. Easy-peasy!

willowmom said...

Re: peeling hard-boiled eggs. Another way to ease the peeling is, after they are cooked, drain and cool them. Keep them in the saucepan, put a cover on it and shake it vigorously so the shells shatter. The eggs should then peel effortlessly under running water. This trick has worked for me many times. I wish I could take credit for discovering it, but it is one of the handful of useful things I've learned from Rachael Ray.

Anonymous said...

My method, that used to work and now doesn't:

1 dozen eggs
1 pan cold water
Cover eggs with water about 1 inch over the top of eggs.

Place on gas range, on high.

Timer set for 18 minutes.

Takes about 8 minutes for full boil, then boil for 10 minutes.

Set pan in sink, run cold water into pan until full of cold water.

Tap eggs on each end to crack, then roll them to crack all over.

Start to peel from the fat top. I used to be able to get my finger under the shell membrane and peel almost in one big peel piece.

Now it's hard to get finger under membrane, it seems to want to stick to shell or not come off egg easily.

Must be fresher eggs - I'll try to use 1 week old next time plus the baking soda.

I've always used the 15-20 minute total time and never had problems with green yolks. I guess I should also try the boil 3 minutes then let sit for 20 in pan off heat.

When using that timing method, I assume the yolks get cooked... seems odd to me but I'm willing to try it. (Mama will be rolling in her urn, but I can live with that... LOL)

Anything to eliminate frustration over peeling eggs. There are way more bigger problems to get upset about than eggs. It always seems to be the little things that end up causing the most aggravation. Or maybe I have less tolerance for little things....

Wednesday is egg testing day. *smile*

Lilly said...

Perm Name - you gotta get the "eggies" thingy - you crack the egg and then dump into their little dishes and then put their little tops on and boil away - it actually works - we lived on them last summer and no more peeling. You can get them at Wal*Mart - for cleaning I got a bag for nylon stockings and put all the pieces in and put in the dishwasher - then when done - everything is all ready for the next time - just pull out the bag (No, I am not in advertising - just fun when one of these silly gimmicks work.

Put eggs in pan of cold water to cover with a tsp or 2 of baking soda (read that on the Internet). Bring to a boil. As soon as the water is boiling rapidly, cover the pan and take it off the heat. Let it sit for 15 minutes then drain and dump eggs into a bowl with water and ice. The peels usually come off pretty well but there's always a stubborn one in the batch.

Permanent Name,
You may be consistently buying eggs and boiling them soon after purchase. Fresh eggs are notorious for being more difficult to boil and peel. Try buying a dozen and letting them sit in the frig for at least 2-3 weeks and then boil them. I think you'll notice a difference between the older, but still totally safe to eat, eggs and the ones you just purchased.

"As a rule, the fresher the egg, the more difficult it is to peel cleanly. The albumen (white) of a just-laid egg contains a store of dissolved carbon dioxide, a weak acid. (CO2 is what makes very fresh raw egg whites appear cloudy.) Over time, the gas exits the egg through thousands of tiny pores in the shell. As this happens, the pH of the white gradually increases, making it less acidic.

Why does acidity matter? The inner membrane of an egg—that translucent skin that envelopes the albumen—is made partly from a protein called keratin (also found in hair and nails), which is tougher in an acidic environment. At the lower pH of a fresh egg, the proteins in the egg white bind tightly to the keratin in the membrane during the cooking process, which makes it nearly impossible to remove the shell without chunks of white attached. Up the alkalinity, and the keratin softens, leading to a looser bond between the white and the membrane—which means hassle-free peeling."

I have the flu. It's not horribly bad (yet), but it's not fun. For those of you here you have been down with it, is it "normal" to be hotter than hades one minute and freezing the next? I get so cold I snuggle under the down comforters, and seconds later I just want to tear off my clothing and go running around the back yard just to get some air. It's not menopause, but if that's what THAT is like, I want no part of it!

The fever breaks, but then it comes back again. I hate this.

I do celebrate love between 2 consenting adults. There is nothing deviant in that but some people are not accepting or comfortable with gays or lesbians. However, it is more and more widely acceptable, so if you refer to gays as "deviant" be prepared for disapproval. Society is changing. You can let your viewpoints broaden to accept change or narrow to refuse it but change will still come and leave those who won't/can't change behind.

Kate is a classic example of someone with a fixed viewpoint. She seems stuck in time. It serves her poorly.

LoveMyGrandsons said...

Lilly, I'm with you. That's how I do my eggs. However, I learned from sister-in-law, who has chickens, that the fresh eggs are a pain to peel. A few summers ago, she gave us about 3 dozen eggs. Knowing I love hard boiled eggs, devilled eggs, etc., she told me to wait about a month before hard boiling them because otherwise the whites would come off with the peel. I was amazed that she said wait a month and asked her about it. She enlightened my about fresh eggs. She has chickens at her farm so we received eggs that she gathered the day before. However, she said the store bought eggs are sent to warehouses, some brands are "dyed" to make them that beautiful white color, and they are a few months old before they are shipped to the stores. That's why the expiration date is usually just a few weeks in advance of the date you buy them. My SIL said that the fresh eggs gathered will last 3-4 months in the fridge; they are that fresh!

So I only make hardboiled eggs with the eggs I buy at the store. When I get them from my SIL, I use them for other things.

Just my 2 cents worth!

Hey, don't you leave! We'd miss you and your phone posts. The stink today was bad, but consider the source and ignore it. If you leave, we'd all be sad.

Kokomo,

Hogs to you and your flu! Hope it goes quickly. Hmmm, seafood and the flu? I'm thinking you might want to reconsider that one - LOL... that creamy seafood dish my just reappear during the night. Clear fluids, jello, popsicles, teas... oh, and the ever healing saltine crackers.... yeah, that's the ticket!

While I know there are a variety of opinions on the issue I am very suspicious it was just an attempt to discredit Jodie with homophobic rhetoric. They fail to understand even those who may not agree with her lifestyle still can find value in the important things she had to say about her experience as a child star. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Just because Jodie is gay and you don't like it doesn't mean anything she says about anything else is discredited. Attack her comments not the person. It's confusion of the issues otherwise. I have not seen a single person able to refute what she said about the importance of privacy. They were solid comments and have vast credibility since she's a first hand source. I've never been a child star so I don't know how it feels. She does.

Permanent Name, no comprende Espanol, except Hola, mi casa su casa, a couple dirty words a friend of mine taught me in high school.

Gotta share this with all of you because it's funny. When we went by our neighbors for New Year's Eve dinner (they are Spanish), they had their daughter-in-law's mother and sister over. They are not Spanish. Our male neighbor introduced me to them and then said she is the crazy white lady that lives next door. I laughed so hard about that and then my hubs agreed and said yeah, she is crazy and I oughta know because I live with her!

Don't know why, just felt like sharing that because I still giggle about it.

Yesterday I went to a ranch of a friend. When I was leaving, I took a wrong turn and ended up on a different ranch where two rottweilers were barking and greeting me. Then these two dogs lead me to the main road.

It was adorable.

LOL - another Kardashian has come out of the woodwork - some guy says he's Kim K 3rd cousin and he's shopping around ideas for a reality show.

Wait, I need to laugh here....... hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Oh, and the one sister says she'll let her kids nurse from her sister Kim's boobs.

Such an uplifting story. Having a sister is truly a wonderful gift.... so much sh*t to talk to the tabloids about for a nice fat check....

I'm waiting for the "real" kardashians to slam a court order on the 'so-called 3rd cousin' to prevent him from using the famous kardashian name. Oh, the drivel from hollyweird is good for a giggle now and then.

And what the heck is going on in CA justice system with Lindsay Lohan?????? That girl needs a couple of years in JAIL. How can judges be giving her so, so, so many 2nd chances? How many charges is she facing now? Lying to the cops, her probation has been revoked, her car accident, the jewelry heist, the assault arrest in NY.....the tax liens, the lawsuit by the designer show for their furniture and fees...

I'm surprised her lawyer is still helping her after being fired and being owed over $300K.

I'm off to bed feeling ever so virtuous compared to the likes of lohan and kartrashian. Will cream up my non-criminal face with Tucker's face cream and settle in with a good book, confident once again that I am better than hard-boiled eggs. It's not me, it's THEM! LOL

I've really enjoyed the chat today, with the exception of two posters. You guys rock - it's a nice crew here.

Penny, I'm with you, there are a few things I don't comment on, but that doesn't mean I don't read and lurk here.

Idmodo, I'm like you half French Canadian (Quebec) and half Irish.

Franky, I love the Highway of Heroes. Saw a procession once and it made me cry.

Now I know I talk about the funny things my GS (4 years old) says. So today: Father: What do you want for breakfast? GS: Cereal. Father: Did you forget to say something with that? GS: Oh yeah, with milk. Loll, but he usually does say please. Love my grandchildren.

I'm not thru all the comments yet, but want to add my two cents. The issue of acceptance of gay relationships is not about sex--it is about love and families. If anyone here thinks that a straight lifestyle excludes 'deviant' acts, well, allI can say is "get your head out of the clouds"! How would those who are opposed to gay relationships like the children in these families to be treated? That is why I said that this is a civil rights issue. I am proud to come from a state in which the majority said NO! To discrimination and classes of people.

The bullying to the non-fans isn't on Twitter (as far as I know).
Someone calling employers, posting names here and other threats are bullying.

Conflict on Twitter? Not bullying.

Everyone is quiet, LMG!
I liked your story about the eggs being too fresh. In my former life, I managed the kitchen of a trendy restaurant. We bought all our eggs form a local ree range farmer. he was a great guy and ran his chicken farm the way his family had always done - he just increased the amount of chickens. Something he told me was that eggs don't have to be refrigerated. I suppose because they are so fresh. He was an amazing guy, I had the biggest crush on him (always had a thing for farmers) even though he was older and very meek and shy. He was so passionate about his chickens, too cute!

Oh lord did we go through eggs in that place! I'd crack 2 cases each for Saturday and Sunday brunch! That's 1440 eggs! I still love eggs.

Bearswife said...

Sorry, I need to proofread. That should read "all our eggs from a local free range farmer".

OT.... I saw the movie The Impossible today with Naomi Watts and Ewen McGregor. This is the true story of a family who survives the tsunami in Thailand. This is a story of love, strength and miracles and a film really worth seeing.

Love is love. That is where I weigh in on relationships between people. Sexual orientation is such a moot point.

LoveMyGrandsons said...

Bearswife, I'm an egg lover, too. Hard boiled, devilled, but my favorite is going out for breakfast and having an omelette. Specifically a ham and cheddar cheese omelette with a few onions and some crispy hash brown potatoes on the side. Breakfast always taste better when someone else makes it!

LMG, for many years I cooked breakfast and brunch at various places. Watched those poor souls line up on Saturdays and Sundays and wait. And wait. And wait. Last place I worked at, it was not uncommon to have a two hour wait on a Sunday morning. It was so popular, especially for celebs or sports stars who came to town. It was a lot of fun.

are the sheep bleating about us silly old ninnies blathering on about EGGS, of all things?! i hope so ;)

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Ex nurse, yes I agree. It's always seemed hypocritical to me that some people are so vocal about this issue and yet if they call that a sin where is the outrage for all the other things people do that are sins? Cheating on taxes, having affairs, pre-marital sex, worshiping money and things. All these people walk into church every day and are received with open arms. You never see these people making signs about that nice young couple second row in church who moved in together 6 months ago to try things out before marriage. It just seems if you're going to insert yourself into people's private lives it needs to be EVERYTHING not just picking and choosing what you want a say in. It's all or nothing.

Personally, I am far more horrified about some of the things described in 50 Shades of Gray and far more concerned about heteros, IF that's what we're really up to! LOL. Bottom line though, I have every right to be horrified about 50 Shades but NO right to tell people who chose to do those things that they can't. You can do it, and I can be horrified, and we can all be friends.

I missed Part I, but watched tonight. I am so glad I did. This was excellent. Way back when, I opted to do a senior seminar research paper on the authenticity of "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass," and his relationship with William Lloyd Garrison. I was surprised at how much I remembered.

Thanks, Pink, for the reminder! I owe you! :)

LoveMyGrandsons said...

Thanks, Admin, for letting me know it was on PBS.

Bearswife, when the hubs and I were first married years ago, we live in an apartment across from a little breakfast place. On the weekends, especially Sundays, we could see the line outside of the restaurant that stretched to the parking lot. They were known for their omelettes and I can tell you from experience, they were delicious! When we went there, it was at least a one hour wait until you were served breakfast. However, because my hubs always got up early (and he still does), he would call in an order when the place first opened, and then he would pick it up. We have breakfast together in our small little garden apartment with our daughter, who was only a few months old. Those were the first times she had omelettes. (I always took out the onions, but she loved the ham and cheese and still does to this day!)

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I think you'd be surprised how many people hold opinions you would be horrified at. It's one thing to hold the opinions, it's quite another to act on them. I couldn't be friends with people who discriminate, but I can be friends with people who hold a variety of viewpoints, but keep it to themselves and don't insert their views into the equation or try to hurt others with them. To me there is a huge difference between believing that homosexuality is a sin, and doing something to act on that belief like making others feel bad or discriminating. No different than believing having an affair is a sin, but then trying to ostracize a family going through it. You can hold all the personal feelings you want, but don't interfere in people's lives to do so. Many people who believe it is a sin still support rights.

To me, having a friendship means not having to watch what you say to people.

I choose my friends pretty carefully. I could WORK with someone who has opposing viewpoints but then I wouldn't call them a friend. I'd call them a co-worker.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Interesting. I'm not sure I've ever been able to find someone who thinks exactly like I do on every single thing, even every single important thing. I like having people who think differently than me. It sharpens me. What does youth have to do with this? You either prefer to be around people just like you or your prefer a bit of variety, it's not a "youth" thing.

Twittering and Twattering ~ Those tweets from Milo seem to suggest she's less "in the know" than she likes to let on. Kate's not feeding her constant curiosity as to her whereabouts, and that seems to be frustrating Milo to the point of heightened anxiety. I'd be very nervous about the tone of those tweets, if I were Kate.
