'Dance Moms' Season Three: Big changes ahead for production

Lifetime is airing a New Year's Dance Moms marathon all day today, followed by the premiere of Season Three at 9 p.m. EST. Seasons One and Two can be found on Amazon, Netflix, and for a limited time all for free on Lifetime streaming (sweet!).

Love her, hate her, or just don't care, Abby Lee Miller has emerged as one of the most well-known, and polarizing reality T.V. women since Kate Gosselin. (Lifetime is unabashedly advertising Abby as a "maniac" and even Television Without Pity, a site that usually lives for snark like this, said they are taking a break from the show, due to the obvious fake setups and bad acting, and stale formula.)

Dance Moms has been sashaying around for awhile now, but Season Three, which begins tonight, marks the first season that Lifetime's production, based largely in Pennsylvania (although the girls participate in a lot of out of state competitions), will have to comply with Rep. Murt's new child labor laws passed last year. After a brief waiting period, the law will take effect this month, and requires a set teacher on set and limits the hours the girls can work. Previously, one of the moms reported the show films for 70 hours a week.

Will we notice any changes, or will Lifetime still be able to churn out a great guilty pleasure even with safety protections in place? We're hoping the latter. Here's hoping this show can prove that schmalzy,  addicting reality T.V. can still be accomplished without exploiting the living crap out of the children participating.

Sidney,

Here is a link for the way I modified the apron:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/110094645/1960s-apron-one-yard-wonder-pattern?ref=sr_gallery_22&ga_search_query=aprons&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_page=4&ga_search_type=all

Sorry, don't know how to make it clickable.

And to the poster who suggested etsy.com, THANK YOU!!!!

They have a few styles there that have no neck straps (cobbler's apron and smock apron)

Plus, buying from etsy.com appeals to my buy American, home-made with love preference.

Big duh - I never looked at etsy.com before. Now I'll be hours looking through it. Lots of nice stuff there!

Hope everybody had a wonderful time bringing in the new year! And wishing you all love, health, happiness, and success in 2013. May your year be as wonderful as you all are! :-)

Great post! Remember when Kate had the audacity to bash the Dance Moms on twitter? At least one of them had been a huge supporter of Kate too!

I have never even seen Dance Moms but I am certain that I'd rather watch that show all day long than watch Kate's pathetic excuse for a reality show.

Huh. One last post on this recycle, reuse, repurpose and then I'll move on... lordy I don't want to incite a sheeple to accuse me of hijacking the convo.... LOL

Something was tickling at the back of my mind, top shelf, and I just remembered getting cards and letters from my Granner written on used cards and stationary... back in the 50s and 60s, when she was in her 60s and 70s it was something that was done all the time.

It was always fun to gather at the dinner table and try to read what was in the current letter/card. She would write in her spidery hand all over the pages, then turn and write sideways all around the edges as a border.

Sometimes the cards were ones sent to her, so we got to read the letter from her friend too! Gentle good times....

I miss my Granner.

Love this topic- I cant wait to see how this season unfolds. I want to throw out right now that I am an Abby fan, not a sheeple, but definitely a fan, so be prepared for me to defend her. Of course I won't excuse everything she says and does, and I don't for one second believe she can do no wrong, again, NOT a sheeple. Wonder if they will ever catch on to that difference- between fan and sheeple?

I'm still watching Twilight Zone marathon, but I'll be switching over in time for the season 3 premier.

I will watch Dance Moms. At least this show has several hiatuses a year, and the kids seem to love Abby despite the antics on camera, and are dedicated dancers. I believe it is highly scripted ( such as the Pyramid- used only on the show, not in real classes)The kids are adorable personalities as well as talented, and the moms are loving moms as well as funny . Abby herself is a real character. Not to say I am oblivious to the complaints about the show- as Admin said, it's a guilty pleasure.I too hope there are positive changes ( not replacement cast!) and perhaps the 70 hours means altogether, not all the kids for that length of time?

Or am I Currently Duped?

butterfly said...

Abby does say mean things but has anyone else noticed that a lot of that is to the mothers and not the students? I haven't really broken it down, but the show's premise is the tension between the mothers and the tension between Abby and the mothers so Abby's character, her mean side, is directed to the mothers. Certainly it's for the drama, I can't remember where I read it but one of the mothers said the fights were scripted or staged and the moms really weren't that catty with each other IRL.
Like I said before, I hope none of this is interfering with the girl's dancing careers.

Oh, can't wait to see if any of the dancers, Cough- Zach- cough end up on the show or make a cameo appearance- cough Asia cough. :)

I hope they don't ruin it with all the talk about Abby being a maniac because she is anything but that in my opinion. She is just a dance coach that creates professional dancers. I don't like the previews that I am seeing of the new season. If it turns into a stupid joke I won't be watching, because I basically sit through the program to watch the dance performances at the end, some of which are very moving.

About the aprons on the other thread, it never occurred to me that is what I need to do because I ruin all my clothes in kitchen. But did anyone see the episode of Duck Dynasty where Uncle Si (the Vietnam vet) made the apron for bustier women (I am one which is not an attribute to me but more of a problem than anything). Ms. Kay is really busty, and she could not find one that covered her bust adequately, so she and the wives were trying to make one and Uncle Si came in and took over and was manhandling that sewing machine in a way that could only be done by someone with experience. He made a grand apron without a pattern for bustier women. He made it what looked like two pieces for the front top that covered each side completely and I think the straps crossed in the back. It was a fabulous apron. She still wears it on the show. Sadly, though, it was for sale for $75 on their site (which is way too much) and it is out of stock. But anyway, I don't know where I am going with that other than I love Uncle Si and think he is the funniest man on TV right now and naturally so, for now. They better not mess with my Duck Dynasty, I will be upset! I was just reading some articles when I was looking for the apron and they said they had tried that in the beginning, but it didn't work out, it was best to just turn them loose and film - that not one of them was portrayed on the show in any way other than in real life.

I dont watch a lot of tv, and have chosen to not watch reality tv that includes children. The only one I will watch is Duck Dynasty with my hubby once in a while. Altho it has kids, the show does not revolve around the kids. I know there is a cheerleading reality show that a lot of people like to watch and say its good. What happened to Honey Boo Boo? I havent heard anyone talk about her for a while.

As for Kate's tweet... I am curious because really family and friends? That usually means paid help. Does she have the kids with her who knows. When they went to Australia, she got the kids for both Christmas and New Years. A judge allowed it because it was for work. So who is to say that wouldnt happen again. Kate has been looking and phishing for a new TV show. Are the kids with her or not, who knows?

I watched the link in the previous post that was New years in Sidney. I had never seen that one. I found one line interesting: they were camping and as night was falling, one of the little girls said to kate " Momma , I really didnt want to come camping", to which kate says" Shhh, dont say that here, but I understand, it will be ok.'

So why wouldnt Kate want that child to say that " here"? and why was it not edited out? I think TLC was already beginning to give us hints of the " reality" of this family.

I am in the camp that Jon likely has the littles seperately from the twins at different times and that could be for many different reasons. All legit!

We havent done much here today. had a great celebration last night, and tired today. I am back to work tomorrow ** sad unsmiley face**

Pity Party,
I love Sy, too!! He says the best witticisms!
The show is obviously given set ups, though, like when the teenage daughter's boyfriend was introduced to her dad and they took him hunting, another episode had the men go to the elementary school, for I think career day, and they scared the kids showing them how to skin an animal (or something gross like that), so the show, for me, is too over the top set up, scenario wise, but I love that family. I laugh so much when I watch. I do like the daughter isn't shown that much. Great choice by the family on that one.

The grandfather had a talk with his grandson about how to pick a girlfriend that was quite sweet and true advice. When he spke of his wife, it was with real love: "sweet and gentle" and a "better cook than even my own mama". Silly but harmless. As to Dance Moms, I will pass.

You know what's interesting, for what it's worth, the very first episode, one of the girls, McKenzie was talking about how it was funny when Abby yelled at them because her face turned red. She said with with a very comfortable look on her face not like she was saying shhh just between you and me. She knew her teacher would see her say that and wasn't scared of that prospect. That's hardly what a child who is petrified of her teacher would say about them. It just made me think either the girls don't take Abby's tirades that seriously, or it's exaggerated for the cameras, or both. I've noticed in later episodes McKenzie often runs up to Abby and hugs her and seems quite fond of her.

It's just not behavior of a child scared to go to class like you would think. I have this funny feeling Abby turns a lot of this off when she is off camera. Kids aren't likely to bond with her like they have if she's like this all the time.

Abby is much more interesting and engaging than Kate in my opinion because she's smart, she's funny, she's talented, she works hard, and there's much more to her than her no nonsense teaching style.

To me, just being a bitch is boring. That was Kate. Boring. You need more than that. Look at Abby, she found a way to get another show. She isn't just riding the train along until it stops, she is actively channeling it into different ideas.

A Pink Straight Jacket For Kate said...

Enjoy the show folks.

As for me, I'll pass on it.
I can't stomach anything produced by Discovery/TLC.

Working Woman said...

Again, I have never seen Dance Moms, ever. But if Abby does in fact display ultra-tough, bullying behavior toward young, aspiring dancers, I don't really feel that is excusable, even if it's only sometimes that she does it.

A good teacher is one who encourages, who supports, who gives constructive feedback. It is not necessary to be overly tough or mean, you can help kids without yelling and/or humiliating them. And again, I know nothing about what has gone on on that show, I am judging by the comments here and from what I have heard.

In order to be a good coach, you should be honest, constructive, and sometimes a bit blunt, yes. But there's a fine line, and I just hope Abby doesn't cross it. Dancers are already hard on themselves, the last things she wants it to negatively affect those girls' self-esteem.

I know they are in two totally different situations and that Kate is not a dance instructor. But we do get on Kate for not treating the kids well and for exploiting kids. Is it fair to give a free pass for Abby, as Dance Moms is also known for being a child-exploiting show? Maybe it is, I very well may be missing something, as I am not familiar with the show at all. :-)

Formerly Duped said...

Well, not to defend everything Abby does which sometimes seem downright mean ( scripted I hope) but she does not physically abuse the girls or pull their hair and is not their mother. She compliments them (yet shows favoritism- is that real?)and does produce many award-winning dance routines. Surely if she was that bad her license would be pulled and these mothers would take their kids out of her school. Idk. I will give it another try b/c I will admit I enjoyed the dancing, the kids and the mothers' interactions for the most part-- not the yelling or criticizing. I like the comic relief in Cathy Candy Apples and her weird smoked meat store-owner young husband & her 'human prop' zombie daughter.I think the show is a totally different concept than JK&8, and I did enjoy Abby and Brittany- no exploitation there. I may be wrong and certainly take others' opinions to heart.

Pity Party said...

@Butterfly, yeah they were pretty honest about picking a story line, etc. But said that it was originally intended to be something along the lines of Hoggers (hunting - men with beards in the woods) and after they spent time with the family and realized the depth of character in them and true family values (even though they bicker, it is not the end of the world) they made it more of a family show and didn't try to change anything. I loved that boyfriend episode. The boyfriend was such a gem. So pure and honest. They do set up the story lines I am sure but said they quickly learned that what the Roberson's would say or do naturally was better than anything they could have set up for them. It is the only show I watch that will have me laughing out loud even if I am all alone. I love the way Si's stories keep getting bigger, like the fish that got away, i.e and here this guy was, shot up, then on top of all that here comes a Bengal tiger......

I hate the way they come up with a good concept and when they find that people are actually watching, they go over the top and mess it up, like Storage Wars is a national joke now. Sounds like they are about to do that with Dance Moms now. When are they going to learn that it is the actual reality that people like to watch and that we are not so dumb that we cannot tell the difference.

Hopefully nothing too personal ( who am I kidding?)

Pity Party said...

I agree Butterfly. You could see the wheels turning in Abby's head. That little Asia had more performance talent than all of the others combined. She was a joy to watch but I could see why they didn't give her the scholarship, better some of the older girls who have been working hard for a long time to get it rather than just stage presence.

Just one other thing about DD, the kids say ma'am and sir, please, and thank you. They get good grades and it actually shows (the girl) doing homework and studying.

Formerly Duped said...

Dmasy said...

I am a Dance Mom viewer. In my mind one of the differences between Kate's show and Abby's show is content.

The dance mother's drama is formatted around real talent and serious competition.

Kate's drama was laced around entitlement and disrespect. Kate's "snotty" attitude overrode any weak story line.

The very talented young ladies in Dance Moms seem so kind, caring and supportive of each other. That tells me that much of drama must be scripted.

LOL so true.

I do admire people who are honest with themselves about whether or not motherhood is for them. My mom has a lot of friends who openly admit that they did not truly want to have children, and that they one did it because they felt is was the right thing to do. That logic makes no sense to me -- why have children if you are not going to enjoy motherhood and if it is not something you truly want to experience?

I feel like some of these women forget that pregnancy eventually turns into an actual BABY being born, and that baby eventually becomes a young child, who eventually becomes an older child, etc. Children are people who have needs, not something to cross off of a bucket list.

It reminds me of something that always confuses me about Kate. In the past, she has said multiple times that she had wanted to be a mother for as long as she could remember. And here, she has 8 wonderful, healthy kids, and acts like it's such work.

To be fair, I know it is work. On the show, she just never seemed to sit back and enjoy motherhood. It was always an effort, always a source of stress.

Not only that, her personality is very far from that of most women who dream of motherhood their whole lives. Honestly, she does not appear to be overly nurturing, she is not patient by her own admission. She likes to be in control, to an obsessive extent, which often goes out the window when you have kids.

So she never striked me as someone who would have dreamt so desperately of becoming a mother.

If any obituaries were published by newspapers, and you were one of the survivors, or if you were an attendant in a wedding, your name will show up on the internet. Moreover, if you were ever involved in any kind of social activity, charitable or news worthy event, your name will be listed when the media reports them in a newspaper, or on a website. Likewise if you purchased or sold property, your name will be there. In addition, any of the search identities sites, such as intelius, people finder, etc. will list you along with age, relatives, previous employment history, and other places where you have lived even if YOU did not report it to them. Just because you yourself didn't put your real name out there doesn't mean that you won't show up in a google search or any other kind of internet search.

It's always wise not to put your real name out there, but it doesn't always guarantee that it's not going to show up.

What I don't understand is why these sheeple seem so obsessed on uncovering identities. What are they going to do with them, and why do they find this type of stalking so fascinating? One of these days they are going to mess with the wrong person without knowing who that person is, or who that person knows, and all hell is going to break loose. It's just a matter of time.

This is true. Unless you do nothing all day every day your name is probably going to end up on the internet. You can stay off facebook and always just use an alias online, in fact you can NEVER go online and your name will still be there.

Bar licenses are public records. My name is there. Now that newspapers are archiving old additions my name is popping up there, mostly from high school sports and other local school things. And no, I don't understand the outing obsession and I REALLY don't understand why it hasn't gotten old. We're all on the internet these days, who cares. Yawn.

AMC is premiering 'FREAKSHOW' Feb. 14.

***AMC's Freakshow is the new unscripted series that follows Todd Ray's quirky family business -- the Venice Beach Freakshow. Leaving behind a successful career in the music industry, Todd was finally able to realize his true passion: bringing together all things bizarre and unique, including two-headed animals, strange artifacts, eccentric performers and human wonders. Located on the Venice Beach Boardwalk, spectators gather to see truly exceptional people, specimens and creatures. Todd and his wife Danielle open their home and hearts to the extraordinary people who proudly call themselves "Freaks." Normal is relative.***

There's hope for Kate yet.

7:00 in Midwest -- the Intro show to Dance Moms is "The Smoke Before the Fire". Brutal. The moms are not excising any restraint in what they are saying. I take back what I said about the drama being scripted. There is real tension and resentment.

I couldn't be a part of it. I shy from such animosity.

I hope this is vague enough to interest watchers without spilling any actual details.

The way she delivered that line was just downright hysterical. When you see two friends going like that sometimes you do want to just butt in with an "I'm from Jamestown!" LOL.

Honey Boo Boo was on tonight as reruns. Her new seasons starts Sunday the 6th. I know a lot of posters here do not like the show. I do. I find them to be a very close loving family. They still live in the same house (rented) and do the same activities they always have. Sugar bear treats all of the kids as his own and adores the new granddaughter. There does not appear to be any nasty back stabbing going on like Kate did to Jon, and no obvious favortism with the kids.

fidosmommy said...

I guess that for me the big difference between filming Dance Moms and Kate's shows is that there is an end result of the Dance Mom's filming - there is a dance competition. It's not just about trips, going shopping, having lavish parties. We know VERY little about the girls' private lives - where they go to school, what they want for Christmas, where they are for Christmas (some have divorced parents) and where they go for vacation. I have seen their somewhat overdressed and overstressed mothers behave badly, but not the kids. As I said before, I think the kids are actually secondary to this show. They are busy practicing for a real dance competition while their mothers figure out which slight annoyance will get them screaming at each other and at Abby this week. It's about the MOMS. That's why it's called DANCE MOMS, not DANCING AT ABBY's.

meagler said...

I hope I am so wrong, but Kates tweets seems to be a bit dejavu for me.

I can not help but think that when she has tweeted in the past about having so much fun it has revolved around filming. Kate's greatest desire is to be back on TV, and hoping to have the best year ever in 2013 makes me curious if she feels this dream may be realized again.

I can not even begin to imagine who would take her on....

I also am struggling with her announcement beginning of December the kids wanted to only be with her. I think a carrot was dangled in front of them to help with THAT decision. Hopefully this trip over the vacation truly is just that , like the one taken to that beach house this past summer. Whether grifted or not, those kids are getting away from the compound, as long as it does not involve any filming or other type of exploitation, and they deserve that. Lord knows they put up with her almost daily!

I so hope my gut feeling is wrong....

I guess they were all wearing the same necklaces because the dance moms have a jewelry line now, but Kelly was not included. I thought the new girl was very good and hope she stays. I think it is time for this group to disband before the whole thing goes sour. They are very disrespectful and unappreciative of what Abby has taught those kids saying (questions and answers) Abby needs them as much they need Abby. Once again fame and money rears its ugly head. Broken homes will be sure to follow, oh but that has happened already.

butterfly said...

Pity Party,
I am very curious to see what fame will do to Abby. According the moms, it has changed her already. I wonder how the girls are handling it- if they are staying grounded. Seems to me Kelly is using the fame from the show to launch her daughters into the media in other ways- Brooke's music video and Paige modeling.

Wow, good for Abby for having limits. For as little as I know about the show, I really respect and appreciate that. These kids are human beings who just wish to dance, they don't owe the public anything.

Both Dance Moms and Kate Plus 8 exploit children, based on what I have heard. From what I gather, though, Dance Moms focuses strictly on the girls as dancers and is less of a personal invasion. We saw the Gosselin kids being potty trained, having meltdowns, vomiting, nearly undressed, etc.

Also, if we're being honest, a big part of the reason so much of the public gives Kate so much trouble for allowing her kids to be filmed, is that she is not a likable person and never was. It is horrible to exploit your kids, but a lot of parents do it, in one way or another. People are probably particularly hard on Kate because she has proven herself to be rude, vile, greedy and unappreciative.

If she had come across as kind, humble and loving, people would probably still disapprove of the child exploitation, but they probably would be a bit more empathetic toward her.

I could be wrong, but I do think Abby is and always has been focused on making professional dancers and gets her rewards from that. I think she does care about these kids and I think she genuinely is mad when they are exploited in any other ways. Her motivations may be to keep their focus on one thing, careers in dance, but the result is she tries to keep them away from the other fame crap and put Christie in her place about the stupid meet and greets. No, that is not appropriate, I don't care how famous the kids are.

One thing I will say is that the kids are exactly the same girls as they were in the video I posted from season 1. They are smart and sweet and just want to dance. Fame may have gotten to the adults but I don't think it has to the kids.

Amy2 said...

Kate had those children for two reasons; fame and money. And she exploited them every which way she could to succeed in her own plan. This is why I am hard on her.

here is my take on the Abby vs Kreider stuff...just my opinion.

I actually have much more respect for Abby than the moms of the dancers. The MOMS....of BOTH shows are, to me, the publicity/fame whores. Like we say about Khate...Kelly, Christy and the rest of them are ONLY 'famous' because of their KIDS. Sure, they appear to be MUCH better mothers than Kreider...at least they are doing things BECAUSE these girls want to be serious dancers, they spend all their time helping their daughters to attain their dreams. Kate, as has been proven countless times, is all about herself. she behaves like a very spoiled child, wants to do what SHE wants, buy whatever SHE wants, go wherever SHE wants to go, etc, etc. Those Gosselin kids have received almost ZERO benefits for giving up their childhood and their privacy.
At least the Dance kids are ALSO able to be living their dreams, even if their Moms are also in on this for the mighty $$$ along with the fame.
At least this show revolves around actual TALENT, the Gosselins do what??? Breathe? Wow. Big whoop.
I'm, personally, not crazy about Dance Moms...due to what i talked about the other day, but I do not feel it even comes close to exploitation as Kreider's show did. Khate was shopping out her own flesh and blood, seeking fame and fortune before those kids drew their first breath on Earth. she truly makes me gag!

True it's probably too soon to tell how this all will affect the kids.

I worry the most about Candy's daughter, I think her name is Evvy or Emmie? The other kids seem to want to be there most of the time but Evvy is just so flat to it all, she's not good and she doesn't seem to enjoy it at all. She is like a doormat to her mom. She even said tonight she doesn't care if she's not on her mom's new competition team. That's not the attitude of someone who actually has passion for this. Poor kid.

fidosmommy said...

I agree about Vivienne (Vivvi), Cathy's daughter. I think early on she indicated she wasn't that into dancing, but her mom's a bit of a steamroller. If MOM loves dancing enough that she TEACHES dancing, then the DAUGHTER will be a dancer too, by golly! I have no idea how successful Cathy was as a dancer herself, but she's got dreams of living it through her daughter. Vivvy is basically used as a prop in the dances, sitting on a swing or something else while the main dancing goes on around her.
No matter what the role, Cathy seems to want Vivvy on stage in wildly expensive costumes.

What I couldn't figure out was why Cathy would drive every day from Ohio to PA to take Vivvy to dance lessons when Cathy owned a dance studio
in Ohio. I know she tried to answer that, but it didn't really explain it for me. It just looked to me like Cathy was admitting right there that Abby was a far superior teacher than Cathy was, and bowed to her expertise. But then again, it might have been a Lifetime idea.
Cathy sure had a very nice car for their interstate journeys.

In case Cathy reads here, this is only my opinion, dear. And I know you don't run away from opining.

@Butterfly - I think Kelly is wise to have them seek other career outlets because I don't think either one of her kids want to put the work in that the other girls do. Both have sat out the season with injuries and their faces are completely devoid of any type of emotion. Abby is right in that they don't want it as badly as the others do. I think is the biggest trouble maker. I think it was hypocritical of the moms to want Abby to leave their spaces unfilled until Kelly made up her mind particularly in light of what might be the real bone of contention between them which is the jewelry line. They are sure to mint a fortune as they all have a good sense of fashion. Who knew during all of this they were actually scrapping on the side of the road like gang busters. Time for new moms.

Working Woman said...

Kinda Sad, I do see your point.

From what I have heard from several fans of Dance Moms that I know, the Gosselin kids were much more invaded than the young dancers on this show.

That said, both are cases of exploitation and making money off of children, which I don't agree with.

However, the point of this blog (to my understanding, at least), was never that any reality show with children is awful and should not be watched. It was that the Gosselins were so tasteless and limitless when it came to putting their children out there.

Bottom line, people are going to watch what they wish and have that right to do it :-)

I watched some of the dancer performances on Youtube. The girls are very talented young dancers but I was amazed at how risque and suggestive some of the routines were. Some of those moves I wasn't even comfortable doing in the Cardio Striptease class (totally appropropriate by the way, we did it for fun for a friend's bachelorette party!) and I am in my twenties! Those girls are what, nine or ten?

Happy New Year, everyone! I am so happy that the Gosselin saga is fading into the past. I had to laugh that Kate tweets she is happy to have teenagers in 2013...she will get what she deserves with her entitled children.

No doubt the kids had to be with mom over Xmas holidays because of a planned vacay, but Kate made it appear that they preferred time with her rather than Jon. She is really sick.

As far as "Dance Moms", I don't watch it and never will. It is trash next to something like "Homeland". I read an article months ago that reality tv has peaked and now the trend is back to quality scripted shows. I hope that is the case.

@Fidos mom - I think Christy the one that beat Cathy down on the side of the road in downtown LA. I can't stand her now. I thought she had more class than that. I don't blame Cathy for throwing water on her when she came after her as I am sure she knew Christy well enough to know what was about to happen. That was despicable behavior and I am surprised that they (being Abby and the producers) did not consider her behavior to be a liability factor and let her go. I also am surprised that Abby does some of it herself and allows the others to openly taunt them with the rotten apples chant as they were doing when the fight broke out. It was not a fair fight with a street fighter like Christy (who knew)and someone who despite her icy sweetness does try to maintain an air of dignity at the same time. I used to like Christy, as she does show a softness when Chloe dances but not anymore. Yes, hand in glove.

I meant to say in my earlier that post Kelly is the biggest trouble maker (when it comes to comes to acting out in front of the kids).

I have always thought they should not make stars out of these reality people but rotate them when reality goes out the window and get a new group. Spread the wealth.

Did anyone else watch (or has anyone ever watched) Extreme Makeover Home Edition?

In my opinion, THAT was an amazing show and is what reality television should be all about. Nobody was exploited, it dealt with families who were dealing with real- life hardships and who humbly asked for help. The design team worked hard to build homes and new lives for these families, and the results were just beautiful to watch. The emotions were raw and real.

Sure, sometimes little things happened that seemed staged and I believe that the families probably knew ahead of time that Ty Pennington had chosen them (the show presented it like Ty and his team just randomly showed up at their homes and shocked the families). But, it was as genuine and meaningful as reality TV gets. I miss it.

I have mixed feelings about this show. I love watching the dancing - the young girls are very talented. The thing that makes me cringe is how the moms interact with Abby, the screaming, name calling on the show and the young girls always seem to be crying. Is that how dance is in real life? My girls did band and sports, dance was not a part of our lives. I realize much of it is staged for drama, however, the crying and emotional rawness of the children is real, it seems.

Perhaps the mothers feel it is worth it for the fame and money. Where are the fathers?

Berks resident,

The dance world is tough and competitive, absolutely. But, if there's actually name calling and screaming among the adults, that's just childish and unprofessional.

If these girls are going to be professional dancers, they need stable, rational role models who will give them constructive criticism and support, while teaching them that kindness, maturity and graciousness go a long way in any field, let alone a field as tough as dance.

I disagree in that we have no idea what the dance practice/performance schedule would be like with no filming versus what it is like because of filming.

No doubt the production schedule dictates the girls schedule. And that the show is scripted. 70 hours of filming, remember?

Yes, they would be dancing, but under entirely different circumstances. Kind of like saying yes, we go to work. But to be filmed all day while at work? Different story. Two different worlds, filming versus non-fliming. The mere presence of a camera changes EVERYTHING.

She is free to date whomever she likes- she should perhaps leave her private life out of her songs as of last summer!

Wouldn't most of all this world still exist even if they didn't have a reality show? They would still get yelled at by Abby, the moms would fight, they would still be working long hours, they would still be traveling all over the place, the pressures would all still be there. That's the biggest difference I see, in that the reality show didn't CAUSE this, the reality show just shows us what is going on. And really, so much of it is so obviously scripted it's hard to get too upset. I can believe Candy and Abby are friends--neither of them really sell it that well that they're not.

I don't like reality shows that alter realities and create problems for people. Clearly this is what happened to the Gosselins. The way I see it though, the girls will have the same exact problems they've had all along even if the cameras turn off. Mercifully, with the exception of a few unnecessary tweets and one race in Connecticut, the Gosselins have been able to have a relatively normal life now that the cameras are off. Not so for dancing kids who want to be professionals.

When they start moving however into things like meet and greets and so on then that's crossing a line.

Formally Duped, I am so glad you posted this.

I like Taylor Swift and feel that she is a pretty good role model. And her romantic life is her business.

But I do think she needs to be mindful of how moving from relationship to relationship so quickly sends a certain message to her young fans. First of all, it comes across like she is not okay being single even for a brief period of time. And there is nothing wrong with being single.

I am also personally not a fan of how she uses her private relationships as fodder for her songs. Many singers do it occasionally, but many manyl of her songs are ex-bashing or speak to someone who has hurt her.

After a while, it does make you wonder, how can someone so young have been hurt SO many times? Does she have a role in that? Maybe, maybe not, but sometimes I feel bad for her exes. They were in those relationships too and they have a side of the story too. Maybe they would rather their personal relationships not be aired out to the public. She has actually come out and said that she doesn't care if her exes are comfortable with it or not, which I don't personally love.

This is just my opinion, but I believe they keep setting Swift up with young guys to keep her demographic interested. No secret Taylor is getting older. Perhaps it makes her seem younger when she runs around with high school boys.

As far as a role model? If I had children, I would look to show them role models out of the entertainment industry.

Just thinking of Kardashian and her pregnancy while being married to someone else. Just makes me shake my head.

If we had cameras following us all the time recording our every move, we all would act differently. It changes us and removes our "free will" so to speak.

How do people act at stoplights when there are cameras there? Do you try to squeak through because you are in a hurry? Or do you stop at the red light because you don't want a ticket?

The camera is changing these impressionable young girls' personalities.

If a camera was watching you do your job and recording your conversations with coworkers do you really believe you would have the same work output and talk about the same things?

Or would you end up changing what you said and did because you knew someone would be watching?

Another comment about Taylor Swift. She is lovely, adorable, gracious to fans, and is marketed well.

But I don't actually think she is that great of a singer, for all the awards she has won and all of the concerts she sells out. My twin sister is an obsessive fan of hers lol, so we are going to see her this summer at a stadium in Philly called the Lincoln Financial Field, as we did in the summer of 2011.

It is either near sold out or sold out. I don't know if anyone has ever been to this stadium, but it is HUGE, absolutely enormous. Some of the most classic singers in history haven't performed there on your because they wouldn't be able to fill the seats, and yet Taylor does easily.

And I actually don't think she's a great singer. Great songwriter and has appeal to the public, absolute. But as far as her singing talent? In my opinion, nothing extraordinary, and I have seen her live.

It's wonderful that she has had all of the success, she works hard for it, but I sometimes wonder why she is as astronomically famous as she is based on her singing alone.

God no. I don't think they should be filmed at all. I'm just saying the exploitation in this case comes largely from the craft, not from the filming. The filming is sort of just a piling on to me, but is not the main reason they are exploited. Doesn't make it right, but I guess that's why I say it's a guilty pleasure. I shouldn't watch it.

With the Gosselins, I breathed a sigh of relief when the cameras are off and still do most of the time. With the Dance girls, when the cameras turn off, I'm not going to be breathing that same sigh of relief. Little about their life will change.

That said, she has proven to be very gracious, charitable, and kind to fans.

So, with the possibly exception of how she goes through relationships, I feel she is a great role model as far as that industry goes.

My sister always talks about how she would give anything to meet her, anything, how it would make her life.

I always tell her, Taylor Swift is a person, a human being just like you and me. She eats, sleeps, uses the bathroom, cries, has both good and bad qualities, just like every other human on the planet. She happens to have had a great deal of success as a singer and is rich, but that does not mean she should be held in higher regard than any average Joe.

Does anyone understand what I mean? I just ... don't.... get the whole glorifying of celebrities. They are human beings, some are exceptionally talented and some are not. I respect that they work to entertain and give up a lot of their privacy, but it's not even like what they do is noble or good for humanity or anything like that.

The physicians who work with Doctors Without Borders, the soldiers who fight for our freedom, they are the ones, if anything, who should be held in such high regard.

I just don't get the whole celebrity obsession, never did.

Well, all I can say on the subject of Dance Moms is there seems to be a lot of fans. It's not generating the outrage JK+8 did. It's a "reality" show that exploits kids, lots of yelling and screaming going on from what I've read here, long hours. I'm having a difficult time differentiating it from the Gosselin fiasco.

SeeSaw said...

Berks County is proud of Taylor Swift unlike that other "celebrity" from this area.
I'm not a huge fan, but I do like some of her music. At 23 she's still so young that the dating around doesn't bother me. I don't have a problem with her personal experiences in her music, either. I LOVE Adele and her whole last album was about a bad breakup.

Thanks everyone for the comments on my OT Taylor post!

My daughter is a big fan, although a bit older than the tween/young teen fan base. I used to like her songs a lot more until I realized they all sound the same! Recently I think she is breaking out of the 'good girl' scene with her latest video and performances but she is still a key role model for many. I think she is sweet, pretty, talented and sincere. I agree with Working Woman that she does seem to need a man/boy at all times- there are many girls like this, and I also agree being single is something we all should know how to do well and be happy.

Maybe her 'romances' are set- ups, but I don't think she should use the men so blatantly for song material- it's hurtful and there are two sides to any story. Why do the relationships only last an average 3 months, and is that a 'relationship?' Typical of teenagers, not so much someone in her 20s IMO.

Why can't Taylor settle down? I think maybe she's smart not to, at this point, as she still tours, and is so involved in the music industry and many celeb romances do not work out. But she is changing her message as she gets older and that's ok- I just don't get the young boy romances and I really hope she doesn't' put them in her next album!

The reason I was thinking of this is b/c my daughter showed me some 'hate' comments on some blog about her and she used to get very few mean remarks.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

May December romances don't really bother me that much as long as the other person is legal, which they are. Unless it's a gold digger. But since Taylor mostly dates Kennedys or other very famous singers they are all very rich to begin with and don't need her money, so it's not that. I think she's young, maybe a little immature without all the social skills and learning opportunities other women have had since she's been working for most of her life, and needs time to figure out who she is and what she wants in a man. Let her date an 18 year old Kennedy, who cares.

Seesaw, totally agree with the Adele love! She is amazing.

And to clarify, I don't have an issue with singers writing and singing about past relationships at all, they can be marking moments and very emotional.

I just commented on Taylor because she almost makes a game of it by refusing to confirm who the songs are about but putting blatant clues on the pamphlets that come in her album cover. So it's always known who the songs were written about. I don't know, I just personally feel bad for the men, who may not want to be sung about.

Also, she always paints herself as the victim who was hurt. Everyone makes mistakes in relationships and it is unlikely that everything was always the other persons fault. That's all I was saying, writing about relationships is a common practice and it's Taylor's business :-)

And she was named the most charitable celeb of 2012, so that is beyond amazing! Good for her.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

I just think Taylor is immature, and that's not meant to be insulting. She's very young and allowed to be immature. It's just at this age I can't relate to her songs much which is why I just never got into her I think. I don't have a problem with her though and wish her the best. It doesn't surprise me she is the only musician 35-year-old Kate seems to like, all very simple, bubbly gum type songs, which is all Kate can handle. It's cool, lots of adults like her, but does Kate like anyone else or is this the extent of it.

Lol Admin, Kate and Taylor are also bffs, dontcha know??

Taylor is about four months younger than I am, and I am dating and having a great time and trying to discover what I like and want, so I could cut her some slack for that, absolutely.

I just feel she has to be careful about sending out the message that moving on from relationships to quickly is normal and that being single is not okay. There are times when I love being single! And young girls, who comprise most of her fan base, are very impressionable. That's what I was trying to get across.

Formerly Duped said...

Admin, I agree Taylor is a little immature, as you said, since she did miss a lot of 'normal' growing pains being in the music business. I thought it was funny that Kate has her in the Inspiration section of her website...and that's the only person. I think TS was very kind to the G kids. Kate considers her a 'friend." She's not my taste either at my age but as I mentioned I hear all about her from my daughter.

Was Conor Kennedy 17 when they started dating? Not sure. But I don't see it as my business. I also thinks it's a bit odd her buying homes wherever the bfs live, and she said she drives by their homes after break-ups (Ellen show)As well as the bfs being in the songs, she has also put new girlfriends (Camilla Belle for one)in a bad light in one song.I also feel sorry for the men whose identity is made an obvious guessing game-JG and the scarf for one example. The 'cling-on' aspect is all I have a question about- I think s he's generous and truly cares for her fans.KK and her pregnancy is much much worse a role model and WHY is she (and her whole family) famous?

WW- you are a twin? Cool!

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

Working Women see that's what kind of bothers me about someone so young being in the public eye, she is expected to be some kind of role model for girls and they look to everything she does as some kind of standard. When the reality is Taylor is just a girl herself, very young, making mistakes, figuring things out just like we all did when we were her age. She has had some gaps between relationships. But she is often in a relationship that's true. It's too bad she can't just figure out what she needs and wants for herself without having to worry about whether she is being a good role model. But, she took on a great responsibility deciding she wanted to do something in the public eye. It would scare me having that many young, impressionable fans especially if I were just a pup myself. Yikes! I'd rather have older fans who aren't as impressionable, who have figured things out and won't do anything stupid just because I did.

It's almost like a parody I swear. Again I have NO problem with adults being fans of Taylor Swift, nothing wrong with that, but for that to be your ONLY musical interest and only inspiration, is just, well, juvenile. Oh wait I forgot I think Kate also went to see the Jonas brothers too lol. Couldn't she at least slap Gandhi up there or something, just so she doesn't look like a total dolt?

Everything Kate does suggests she is mentally 12 years old.

There were people here who still watched and people who said DON'T WATCH. Same with this show. I watched every single episode of Jon and Kate, I never boycotted it.

I guess I have never been interested in telling people what to watch on T.V. even if I don't like what I see. I don't know it seems like sort of a basic freedom, to tune into what you want to on TV without other adults telling you that you can't watch it. But I do like hearing why some people think it's different than JK and some people don't like it, which is why I did this thread. It's interesting.

Absolutely, Taylor is still a young woman and has the right to make mistakes and decisions like every other person, involving relationships or otherwise. The difference is that hers are in the public eye for young girls to see. That's quite a heavy burden for a 23-year-old.

On the flip side, there is a lot she can and does do with her influence. She donates to charities and stresses the importance of appreciating how you got to where you are. Hopefully, young girls are picking up on that too.

Speaking of my twin, I have a very funny New Years Eve story that involves her.

So we went to Georgetown yesterday to see one of her good friends named Aaron and celebrate the new year with him. One of Aaron's friends met up with us an we all went out to an Italian restaurant called Il Canali.

I ordered a personal pizza, it was delicious but I didn't want to finish it. My twin, whose name is Lindsay asked if she could have a piece.

I picked it up and said "Lindsay I am giving it to you.... WITH MY BARE HANDS!"

She started cracking up. She never was into Kate's shows but I did show her that one clip from the RV episode and she was appalled.

She said, "With your dirty hands? That's DISGUSTING. Fries please."

We were just giggling and told the guys it was an inside joke. And no, I don't refer to Kate often at all outside of this blog, but it was such a fitting joke I couldn't resist. And it was fun to just giggle with my sis over something silly.

Thanks Kate!

Did anyone hear anymore about the photographer that was trying to get a shot of a Ferrari that he thought Justin Bieber was in (he said he was not in that car) that was apparently a part of his motorcade. I remember on one of the red carpet shows a celebrity made the comment that he saw a motorcade go by and someone got out and was flanked on either side by a band of bodyguards. He perhaps joking said he thought it was the president but it was Justin Bieber. Turns out that it was all justified as he apparently has a deranged fan now. I don't think the photographer was ran over by the Ferrari but another car as a policeman told him to move away and when he did he was struck and killed. Maybe with the increase in these incidents they will do something about the photogs as it has to be very scary.

For the most part, I do agree that both Dance Moms and Kate's shows are exploitive of children and that it is a bit difficult to see why it would get any less criticism then Jon and Kate Plus 8 did.

That said, guess everyone has their own personal comfort levels with everything, exploitive shows are no different.

My moms SO watches what he eats since his hear surgery. He will eat a plate of spareribs but won't touch a cheesesteak sandwich.

Why?? Both are meat, neither one is thought of as "healthy". He is just more comfortable with one than the other for whatever reason and can think of it as a "guilty pleasure", while wanting to avoid the other one.

It's just down to personal comfort level and your threshold, I suppose.

KT also likes Pink. I watched the concert I Heart Radio (which was a fabulous show) on NY's eve. Pink was on and I had never really noticed her or her music but was blown away by her bravery. She did one whole segment flying all over the auditorium in some sort of contraption that enabled her to control it with her body. She could fly high or low, fast or slow, do a 180, 360, fly upside down or side ways, turn flips, land it on a very narrow tall pillar in the auditorium and take off again and eventually made a smooth landing back on stage singing away the entire time. It was fascinating to watch. I had seen flyers before but it was nothing like that. I might check out her music a bit now. My first thought was wow, she makes sure people get their money's worth for those high-priced concert tickets. When I was young, just about anybody could go to a concert as the prices were quite low and I did go to about all of them in our area. Now the prices are so high you have to save up for them and be selective.

My daughters and me started watching Dancemoms when it was just the first season but that constant yelling and (I hope, fake psycological abuse) gets old real fast and makes me really mad inside , we havent watched it since. Same as with Honey BB, it was refreshing first but the constant overly "we are Hillbillies" behaviour irritates me. Dont get me wrong, I have nothing against rednecks or hillbillies but it is all soooo fake in those shows. Dont those people in those shows know that somebody is making them look stupid on National tv? And NO, Im not Jellus :-)!!! We love to watch Runway and Topchef though -> probably all scripted too but so much easier to watch and based on atleast a talent or creating something.

I like Hell's Kitchen but note in the recent seasons there is a lot of swearing, physical conflict, yelling, cattiness, alliances etc.(from contestants, not just Gordon!) It takes away form the essence of the show, who is the best to run the prize restaurant. Also like Ramsay's Nightmare (?name)but again, full of conflict and fights. Is this a new trend? A reflection of viewers' preferences? Not mine.

She can write whatever she wants. She, like all musicians, works with other songwriters, producers, etc. And all music has to be approved to be released. I would bet my house she does not have final say on the album.

Quick frankly, I really don't believe much that is written about celebs. We've seen how often footage is editing, pics photoshopped, quotes taken out of context. Julia Roberts told Oprah she always "fake smiles" at all times on the red carpet, because if she so much as coughs, the photo is in the papers declaring she is made a somebody/something.

And how many MORE years are they going to do the Jennifer Anniston/Angelina crap? Seriously???? The two women are probably in hysterics over how much press they get = money in their pocket, keeping them popular.

ALL celebs need publicity. How many gay male celebs have girlfriends, only to be outed years later?

And I agree with whoever said she does not have a good voice. She really isn't much of a singer. All the more reason for her multi-million dollar marketing team to package her up as a love-lorn, frequently heartbroken blue-eyed, blond-haired victim.

Teenage girls EAT THAT UP!!!

Heather that's an interesting notion.

But I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say her relationships were fake. John Mayer and Jake Gyllenhaal have busy schedules and could get any girl they want, I doubt hey would spend their time posing with women they were not dating or interested in.

Taylor was 19 to early twenties when she dates those men, a lot younger than they are but not a child. And she is attractive and she was the "it" girl, so I don't find it hard to believe that those men would be interested in dating her, if only casually.

Very nice guy pulled a huge drywall nail out of tire, patched it without having to take it off the car and inflated all four tires. He said that would hold for the life of the tire. Unlike you, my tires are 10 years old, going on 13 and I DO need new ones soon. Still. Got stuck in heavy traffic returning from mall after repair, messing up cooking and baking schedule that evening (for next day's celebration). Some of the dancing they do is way too sexy and lifetime even had to swiffer an episode remember that big controversy? I get that. But most of the dancing is very beautiful and lyrical. Mady's photo was deliberately provocative and close up just like the swiffered episode. But just watching a kid dance appropriately, well if pediphiles get off on that I guess they could see that any time just showing up to these events claiming to be a relative.

I agree that dancing is beautiful and as long as it is appropriate, there is nothing going on that a pedophile couldn't go to a dance recital and see.

But think about this: suppose an editor of Dance Moms turned out to be a sex offender like Bill Blankinship was. Wouldn't we all be horrified??

A lot of the routines are suggestive, I watched them on YouTube. If it turned out that someone beind the scenes was arrested with child porn charges, it would seem every bit as harmful and disturbing as it was with Jon and Kate Plus 8. We would be disgusted over all of the footage of the girls dancing in leotards that he had access to, just like we were horrified about Bill Blankinship and what he had access to.

People should be able to watch what they chose and what they are comfortable watching. But Dance Moms does broadcast young girls to the whole world, instead of just letting them pursue their dreams sans cameras, and there are always risks involved. No free pass from me.

There are differences between the two situations and similarities, it is probably not as black-and-white as one show is okay and the other one isn't.

While I was there I thought I'd venture inside to see if they had any kids' new boots (they often get donations from children's shops). In the shoe section, staring right at me on the top row, was a pair of brand new bright PINK Crocs in my size! I couldn't help but giggle. No, I didn't buy them, but I got a good chuckle out of it, remembering the "fondness" here that some posters have for Crocs.

Thanks for the laughs!

I think Dance Moms is exploitive 'by default' because they were not created BY a reality tv producer. The dancing competition itself is almost secondary while the real draw is in the asinine behavior of the the mothers and Abby's big mouth.

Abby's dance studio was already up and running long before a production company filmed them, whereas TLC's whole purpose in filming Jon & Kate WAS to exploit the Gosselin kids.

Did anyone get this ad at the bottom of the page...

*Casting Calls

Where are you, Kate? Jump on this one!

Please like Kate would even make it in through the door. Doubt it. Besides she's too busy sitting at home putting the only part of her body to good use...her thumbs.

She's not proactive she's inactive. As in wait and see who comes knocking. Newsh flash...nobody will come.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say she probably answers a lot of casting calls in the hope she can get those kids back to work for her.

I don't either, Formerly Duped. I guess we'll be stuck out, while others chat without us. sigh

I'm surprised that no one here has thought of setting up a message board for everyone to "chat" about off topic subjects. There could be different forums for different topics like TV shows, with a different forum for each show. That way you would read only forums and topics that are of interest to you. Dance Moms, DWTS, other reality shows, some popular drama shows. Could also have forums for general chit chatting, cooking and recipes, gardening, our pets, and on and on. Runboard and Proboard are easy to set up and free. Best part is the administrator can approve people to join and it can be private to non-members. They even offer the ability to keep some forums private and others public. Many boards just have a general forum public where there are instructions how to request membership, such as post there and tell the admin what your screen name is from this blog. It would be a great way to keep out sheeple and have a way of connecting and chatting about all the many other topics of interest here. There can be an administrator and any number of moderators you want. Different people can be made moderators of different forums.

Am I the only one that believes THIS blog is a great place for everyone to chat about off topics?

Sally that's a nice idea but for me personally I like having everyone together in one thread. I wouldn't have time to moderate this blog and a forum however I wouldn't stop anyone. It would just concern me we could lose the group feel if we start segregating into little pods like that.

DMASY...Is there any way you can make the 'friends' list private? Right now I can see who is on the list and I don't want 'just any sheeple' to go there and mess with my facebook. Once you do that I will send a request. :-D

By the way the reason the FB was set up was to have a bit more private area to arrange a meet and greet without shouting it all here. There's no reason however a favorite recipe and tv show needs to be private. Just jump right in and discuss. We do! If there are not too many fans out here tv shows have their own forums. Twop is a great place to start.
