'Confessions of a Prairie Bitch': Alison Arngrim's brilliant and hysterical memoir on child stardom, and childhood horrors

"I've learned that people see what they want to see and believe what they want to believe."

Little House on the Prairie's Alison Arngrim takes us back to homespun bonnets and one-room schoolhouses and, um, cocaine in her 2011 memoir, a brutally honest, year by year rundown of her unreal reality growing up in Hollywood. Alison was one of the stars of the biggest family television show of the 1970's, and arguably, the most famous pint-sized, underage villain to ever grace the small screen.

Naturally, Angrim had her issues with child stardom, and she spares no gory details. She was exposed to drugs and alcohol from a young age (she was doing LSD at age eight), she worked long hours in brutal heat and uncomfortable costumes and even once fainted in the middle of a scene, and was beat up by other children and called names for playing "the bitch" on T.V. Meanwhile, she was often left alone by her absent parents (also in show business, her mother was the voice of Casper the Ghost and Gumby) to be babysat by her older brother, and says she was molested multiple times by him. She would later become an advocate for children's rights, both on and off the set. (Angrim even came out to Pennsylvania to testify at hearings about reality T.V., spearheaded by Rep. Murt. The inquisition would ultimately result in P.A. tightening its child labor laws, which go into effect this month.)

But ironically, Angrim was part of a production that was widely regarded as very protective of children, even ahead of its time. Michael Landon fiercely guarded the children on set, and the child actors have almost all grown up to be very stable and successful adults, avoiding the typical pitfalls. Coincidence? "Mary" and "Laura" continued to act into adulthood and have families. The twins who played "Carrie" quit acting and went back to high school to live normal lives, both of them riding and breeding horses. "Albert" founded a charity in Los Angeles for troubled children. "Alisha" married a real estate agent and now appears on the Real Housewives. "Willie" is a stockbroker and never acted again. "Cassandra" was a finance reporter for CNBC and now FoxNews.

Oh, and this cute little moppet of a cowboy? Remember sad orphan "James" who ended up shot by robbers?

Yeah, he's this beautiful man now:

Be still my heart!

And of course Alison Arngrim grew up and became an advocate for children, as well as a comedian, and has made a real difference for kids. Here is Arngrim's recounting of how Michael Landon guarded his child stars:

"Everyone always asks if Michael was like a father to me, if he loved me. I have no idea if he loved me, but he went one better as far as I’m concerned. He respected me. Respect is something very hard to come by for child actors. They are often treated as dumb animals or props, objects to be moved about in service of the plot or the other actors. They’re sometimes instructed to do no more than hit their mark and “act cute”. Making silly faces and repeating inane catchphrases is encouraged. In these circumstances, not much is expected of them, and “not much” is exactly what you get. I think this contributes to the rampant lack of self-respect we see so often in ex-child stars and the resulting self-destructive behavior. If you’re never asked to meet a standard, never held accountable for anything, sure, nothing’s ever your fault, but then nothing’s ever to your credit, either. It’s pretty much like you were never even there. This was never the case for any child actor in Little House on the Prairie. Or as we like to say, “Cast of Little House: no arrests, no convictions.”

And I do believe we owe that to Michael."

Lest you think the entire book is yet another tired, depressing commentary on how brutal this industry is for someone so young, Arngrim peppers the tragedies in the book with laugh-out-loud stories and antidotes from the fanciful world of Hollywood circa 1973. In particular, her first encounter with Melissa Gilbert, then a nine-year-old little firecracker (who would later go on to act in dozens of projects and eventually be elected president of SAG), goes something like this:

Gilbert

"She [Melissa Gilbert] marched right in and introduced herself and began explaining things to us, all kinds of things: who was who, who did what, how everything worked. She was filling us in, in no uncertain terms, mind you, as to the way things were around here…
Then came her stern warning, delivered with the intensity of Edward G. Robinson, in the vocal range of Shirley Temple: “And whatever you do, you watch out for that Melissa Sue Anderson. She’s very dangerous. She’s evil, and I hate her.” Now, my aunt could not sit still for this. Melissa Sue Anderson? The girl cast to play Laura’s big sister, Mary? She was a little girl, for heaven’s sake!
My aunt chided, “Oh, honey, you don’t mean that! You don’t really hate her now, do you?” “Yes, I do!” Melissa squeaked. “I hate her, and she hates me. She tried to kill me, you know. And she’ll kill you, too, if she gets the chance!” And then she ran off.
It was as if we were suddenly in the middle of a really bad prison movie with an all-midget cast. We had just been told to “watch our backs” by someone who looked like a talking Holly Hobby doll."

Melissa and Alison became best friends and have remained so ever since.

A must-read, Arngrim's memoir is widely available on Amazon.com, including for Kindle, and even many local libraries.

My goodness, this fussing back and forth has got to stop! The stress just reading it is giving me a headache. This is a wonderful place to blog and talk about kate. But we love to talk about other things that are good and sad. I don't have the money to buy Alison's book, but I had a great idea last night. I went to Google books and found her book and read 89 pages of it. I want to track down her brother and flog him good. Thank God LHOTP came when it did because her brother didn't have all that time to attack her again. I looked him up on Wiki and he is married and living in Canada. I don't know what his explanation was about why he did it and his horrible reasoning. A poster up thread mentioned that and I would like to know what it was.

In March, I think it is going to be on the History Channel, a 5 part series of the Bible! Executive Producers are Mark Burnett of Amazing Race and all those shows and HIS WIFE, ROMA DOWNEY!!! Wow! That was shocking to read! They have been married for about 6 years.

Robert Kardashian and his widow dated for 6 years and she married him right before he died. She filed bankruptcy and lost her home to foreclosure. They have pictures of his hand written journels and it is shocking what he wrote about Kris. They are claiming it is a lie. Ring a bell, kate? They can be tested by a forensic handwriting expert against known handwriting of his like in his legal notes and papers. The Rooster has come home to nest for the Kardashians. They all have problems now. You don't treat people like dirt for years and get by with it forever.

Luke does your local library have ebooks? TONS of libraries are doing this now. You might be able to try your luck online, you never know. It takes a BIT of work upfront to get your computer ready, but once you do that it is worth it. Usually you have to download some kind of program that lets you access the library in the first place (I use Overdrive, free) then you have to download or own some kind of reader that will let you read the book you selected, usually that's ipad, kindle or kindle for PC (free).

Sometimes, library districts overlap, depending where you are. Nerd alert: I am a card-carrying member of four different libraries, both the LA libraries (there are two different branches in LA, lord knows why) as well as two neighborhoods within the city that have their own separate libraries (some neighborhoods get snooty like that and want their own independent libraries, I find this very amusing). They are all doing Kindle now, so usually most books I'm interested in show up on at least one library's Kindle queue somewhere. I doubt I'll ever pay for a book again.

Finally to answer your question about Alison's brother (skip over if you'd rather read this from the book), Alison said he told her he was on a lot of drugs and alcohol at the time. What horrified her was he said that being with her was the best sexual experience of his life and that everything ever since has been a let down. Agggh! She was six years old for God sakes. I'm not sure if he ever had kids himself, but if I were the Canadian authorities I would be checking that out so fast. He should not be around children.

I like the book discussions, and news-related topics. And while I am just one reader here, I kinda sorta hope we'll not do another sports-oriented post.

I know some of you are rabid fans of this team or that, and I do realize there are key times of the year when sports is Emperor of the Known Universe. But ball games hold no interest for me, whatsoever. And I'm way, way, way over the exaltation of sports coaches and players. No human being deserves the adulation some of them receive, no matter how inspiring any one individual can be (or is).

I don't mean to insult anyone who gets excited about such things. You have a right to choose your own adventures (and to talk about them afterward, at the water cooler and this blog. And I'll support Admin in her choice of topics. It's her blog, and she can do whatever she wants with it. I'm just a guest. :)

Thanks for another enlightening and entertaining reading recommendation.

PS: I never read any of Kate's books. Unless you count standing by the book table in Target and flipping through the photo album edition. That took less than 5 minutes.

Improbable Dreams, as a huge sports fan, I am in no way insulted by your comments. Like everyone, I have many different interests. I call it being similar yet different.

I signed up for comments by email some time ago and have never received one single post by email (and no, they aren't in my spam folder).

For those of you who are blaming the FB page for the outings, I disagree with you. AFAIK, most of those people were outed BEFORE the creation of the FB group. Their info was reposted after, but the original outings came long before. Only one person that wasn't outed before has been outed since.

Lukebandit -- Alison's book is available on loan in e-format. Do you have a library card? If so, go to your library's website and check out the logistics for borrowing an e-book. As Admin said, all you need is the appropriate reader app on your PC and the rest is easy-peasy. You can even download multipe reader apps on your computer. I find the Sony free reader app to be the most useful for borrowing library books. You can go to https://ebookstore.sony.com/ to download it. There are also free books available for you to download, although there are more free books for Kindle than for any of the other e-readers.

Again if you don't like spoilers, scroll on past.

I absolutely loved what Alison had to say about Michael Landon's death. She was upset, naturally, and very taken aback when the press stormed her looking for a comment. They tried so hard to get her to say Michael was a saint and Michael was like a father to her. She basically told them kiss off, Michael was no FATHER to her, she had a father thank you very much-- Michael was a MAN. A man who was not perfect, a man who drank and cursed and had a huge ego and had his faults....BUT, at the end of the day, this is what makes people interesting, in her opinion. Michael would not be interesting in her opinion if he were what the press said. She loved Michael for who he was, and was very annoyed the media tried to make him out to be Pa, or an angel, when he wasn't. Oh also she's hysterical talking about Melissa Sue Anderson at the funeral, again Alison gave it the old college try asking her about her new baby and trying to strike up a conversation. Melissa said he was 6 months old and then spun around and walked off. Alison was like ....OKKKKAY! That girl, something was wrong, for sure.

In addition, her downright magical friendship with Steve Tracy, and his tragic death, was just heartbreaking. Heartbreaking.

Alison strikes me as has having so much love to give, so much selfless love. Decades later she was STILL trying to break through to Melissa Sue Anderson, who had been nothing but a bitch to her her entire life. I admire her.

Missed a lot of the swiffering and "outing". My opinion, if you are on a public blog and do not want to be outed, DO NOT POST ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION. Although it is hard to believe, there are people out there who do nothing all day but post on blogs and try to collect personal information. That is their hobby, their life. Not everyone is like YOU. You have to be vigilant with your personal information. And even though you may think you are making friends on this blog and maybe you are, when you start acting casual and let down your guard, you are going to start posting personal info. Just don't fall for it. You don't know who you are posting with.

I love using my local library to borrow books for the Kindle. Thanks for the suggestion about joining other libraries.

Also, if you look at your Kindle book list (online at Amazon is the easiest way to do it) you'll see that many Kindle books are loanable. I've loaned a lot of books to friends and family members. You just have to coordinate it as you only get the book for 2 weeks. But ... if you turn off your WiFi you can keep the book longer as Amazon can't take it back until the WiFi is on.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Seesaw thanks for bringing up the Wifi trick.

As far as I understand it, you could technically keep a book for however long you want to read as long as you make sure you turn your device's wireless off or airplane mode when you open the kindle app. The nice thing too about kindle library is that it automatically returns the book for you. There are no late fees, no scrambling to get to the library by 5 to turn it in. Gas and time, saved, and I'm always looking to save gas and time.

I just started using kindle library the past couple months and I'm already addicted. I didn't read as much before, maybe only two or three books a year, now I read all the time, two or three a month.

Re: Alison and Melissa Sue
I don't know what really happened between those two. Melissa Gilbert put the dagger in right off and she and Alison were best friends. From what I read in MSA's book, she seemed like a little professional. ML asked her to be in his autobiographical movie ( maybe some jealousy?) and went on to have a good life, marriage and kids. Despite her strange smothering mother, MSA seemed to to have lived the most normal showbiz kid life.

I also respect her integrity in not bad mouthing the other girls as they did her. I did enjoy the other Prairie books; just don't know why the distance among the children, and no one but them will ever know, if they know themselves.I did sense some jealousy in MG about MSA's pretty face and hair etc and AA insulted her face as being large and round. But obviously MSA was the prettiest and girls can be petty and ostracize others for such things.

Milo's extolling this as a fair-minded entry about her fair maiden, but as I see it, Babble (a revenue-oriented blog) is the only one pushing Kate's new gig at the Stir. Copying here, to save you clicks:

Fans of Kate Gosselin will be cheering “Gr8!” at this news.

Today, the reality-show veteran began her new stint as a columnist for The Stir. She’ll be posting weekly on the women’s lifestyle site about her life and adventures in motherhood.

“I was asked to join the many talented writers here and I feel honored that my stressful, funny, crazy and sometimes unbelievable life experiences as a single mom of eight will be documented right here!” Kate writes in her debut column.

She begins by explaining how hectic this year has been: 2013 is barely three weeks old, and already she and her kids have been caught up in a whirl of activity. They went on a week-long trip over the holidays, and then Kate began doing some intensive home maintenance work with the help of “a close family friend who is a jack of all trades and master of ALL.”

This year will hold a lot more excitement before it’s all done. Kate will turn 38 in March (“that’s just way too close to the big 4-0!“), and a little later on, her two oldest kids, twins Mady and Cara, will become teenagers. (“Help! This is going to be one heck of a ride…”)

As if all that weren’t enough, Kate is in the midst of some mysterious new work projects in addition to the blog. “I’m not teasing on purpose, I’ll divulge as soon as I can!” she promises.

The new cookbook she’s been working on? The dating show she was reportedly shopping to networks a while back? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Kate’s last blogging venture didn’t turn out as well as expected – she and Coupon Cabin parted ways on less-than-friendly terms – but perhaps a journal devoted specifically to motherhood will fare better.

What do you think? Will you be following her new blog?

It sounds to me like Melissa Sue Anderson lacked social skills and had a crazy mother. This doesn't necessarily make her a bad person. We'e all known people who when we try to have an easy conversation with them, how you doing, what's that you're playing, how old is your baby? That they seem icy and blow such friendly people off. Sometimes it's because they are a bitch, but sometimes it's just because they don't know HOW to talk to people and get uncomfortable and their only defense is to blow you off. For someone with as big a heart as Alison, she took this personally. But, I think she showed she made a real effort to understand MSA and where she was coming from, which was touching. Perhaps MSA was even Asberger's. Extremely intelligent, but unable to relate. Even the guy who played John Jr. couldn't stand her. Often Asberger kids end up being "that kid no one can stand." It's sad, all over social skills. Melissa Gilbert had already spent an entire pilot and first episode with her so it wasn't like she wrote her off immediately. Plus she was only 8 or 9, doesn't take much before a kid that young writes you off.

In a way the tension worked because Laura was supposed to be jealous of Mary because she was the pretty one and smarter, and Mary was supposed to be jealous of Laura because Pa loved her the most. So for them to be best friends in real life might not have been able to convey that constant tension between them on screen as well.

The episode where Mary went blind (Or as Little House fans joke, KARMA.), although very cheesy, was fantastic in the way the sisters sort of came together and Laura supported her, after all the years of tension.

Hmm, I didn't get the Asperger idea but will reread to see. Interesting.I think years of tension maybe just led to awkward interactions as adults.I think MSA's mom just put the pressure on- didn't Missy have to lose weight? I think she also saw the closeness of ML and MG and warned her daughter not to trust her; maybe this caused tension. I just did not like the person MG portrayed herself to be, the star of the show, yes, but she seemed to put people down a lot, especially her own family.Alison comes across as a loving person, but with a snarky spunk- she needed that to survive. he one-woman show apparently was a riot- a friend of mine saw it in Paris ( jealous Kate? lol)
Not all kids are destined to be friends and in show biz there is competition. Missy did mention she was friends with other cast members. I just think MSA did not get a fair shake and no one knew why her mom was so odd.

But I take your point- dying to reread now!

I am all for harmony, here and in real life :) When drama erupts at any of my favorite places on-line, I try to stay out of it and go quiet, or simply talk about something else. It's a common phenomenon on discussion sites and I doubt there's any way to totally avoid such drama. It's human nature. But this site is certainly one of the most calm and the flame-throwing is kept to a minimum.

I enjoy the variety of topics. I am not a huge sports fan, but I do love my SF Giants. However, I will not bore anyone here with my fandom lol. I also do my political discussions on a site designed for such discussions and try to avoid that here, as I know that is a hot topic sure to rile up someone. I enjoy the cooking tips and recipes, the book reviews and suggestions, movie and tv show discussions, etc. There are so many interesting things in life - and Kate Gosselin is not one of them!

However, I did have a thought yesterday when I saw a brief TMZ commercial that was featuring Taylor Swift. Remember when Kate was so excited to go to a Taylor Swift concert? I wonder if Kate thinks she looks like Swift? I can imagine Kate's stunted mind envisioning herself in Swift's shoes. The irony is that Kate was at one time quite attractive (with only minor enhancements). But she kept doing more and more procedures until her natural looks have been stripped away and she's turned into a very bland and rapidly aging woman.

Hope I'm not repeating what someone might have already pointed out. Did Kate (or her ghostwriter) mean to say, "jack of all trades and master of NONE"? Because that's how the quote normally goes. If the "family friend," i.e., paid helper, is a master of all trades, then just say so.

That doesn't really sound like a "whirl of activity." Everyone's kids are off for winter break, which around here is Christmas week and New Year's week. Since the kids went back to school, Kate's been in "whirl" while someone else does repairs around her house? What's hard or tiring about watching someone else work?

And further, she has no close family friends. None! As far as I can tell, the person she spends the most time with would be whoever does her nails. Or did she have her head of security come repaint the trim around her windows, fix the leaky plumbing, or whatever other repairs she needed done? She probably put the kids to work, all the while criticizing their efforts.

Improbable Dreams, your post did not insult me one bit! I completely understand. I go nuts for NCAA basketball, esp any team on the right coast! Baseball bores me to tears, and golf is simply excruciating. Everyone likes something different, that's what makes this virtual verandah fun, there are so many topics going on!
I do have to share something about the VCU head basketball coach Shaka Smart. He has turned down job offers from other universities with higher profiles, in particular one offer from Illinois, that would have given him a salary of over two million a year, more than doubling what he was getting at vcu. He turned it down, saying that some advice he got was ”Don't run away from happy.” He's happy in Richmond VA, his wife is happy, he gets support from the university in focusing the basketball program on academics, community service and outreach, and not just winning games. He says the only thing he promises each student he recruits is that, if they apply themselves, they will graduate in four years. If you have a few extra minutes, go to you tube and check out VCUBasketball Channel, and check out the videos for SEAL training which the support staff, coaches, players all take together at the beginning of every year. Shaka smart takes a charge is fun video. Oh, gee, I have got to stop, sorry to be so boring. In real life, if you meet me and dh and there is a game coming up, we will just drag you along to our neighborhood sports bar and treat you to a beer while I spout off player statistics

Not trying to keep this issue alive, just want to respond to an earlier post asking whether anyone had been hurt by outings of our posters.

From my understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong about this), no one has been directly outed by being traced through thier IP address, facebook, google or other account as a result of posting on this website.

At least one person was outed by providing some specific details about a personal experience that had a public record. She posted this earlier--I think on this thread, but, maybe the previous one. The rest have been outed because an outside Facebook account was created for people to arrange a personal meeting. It was in the initial setup phase that people who were joining had their personal profiles revealed for a short period. The person who set it up was mortified and has taken responsibility for the mistake. From my limited experience with Facebook, it was the result of default settings that automatically make profiles public--it is a social media communication tool. So, you have had to be a somewhat advanced user to have headed off that issue.

IMO reason people got upset was that Admin maintained that the problem was not her responsibility because the mistake was not hers and didn't happen due to any lapses  on her part. This was interpreted as not caring. This was the kindling that started the inter-blog fire.

Since this blog was used as a venue to post the personal information, it has now become this blog's problem and Admin has since put safeguards into place. Moderation will prevent personal info from being posted here, but it won't stop those wing-nuts from posting it elsewhere.

I think that people are getting confused in thinking that people have been directly outed because they are posting here or that the blog has been hacked and ip addresses and google (or other) profiles are being exposed. I don't believe that this is the case, but maybe it would help if you can clarify this, Admin.

Is it possible to be traced and personal info exposed simply by posting here? Assuming that identifying information is not contained in our posts.

As far as people being hurt, I know that at least one person who was exposed had made some personal remarks about a family member, and that person may have been made aware of those remarks. So, yes--I think at least one person has been hurt, or, at minimum, has had some very awkward moments.

There are some extremely mentally ill people that are orbiting Kate. Hard to believe that there are people that are so consumed by all of this, but, obviously, there are. These people lurk and put pieces of information together like puzzle pieces, waiting for the day when that on piece can be found that will reveal an identity. If you ask me, it seems that these skills could be put to better use--say in the CIA, or medicine or any other place than in a little blog that likes to snark about a fading star and exchange recipes and book recommendations.

I hope that Admin can reassure us that there is no way to be traced through our ip or accounts, unless we reveal personal information, and that some of our regulars will resume posting here.

Since Kate is settling into a mediocre job of blogging, maybe things will settle down. But, probably not.

Sorry for the long post. I think my motherly instinct is kicking into overdrive. I hate disloyalty and unfairness and that is what I am seeing.

I was flabbergasted to read of the law in California about the victims of incest, and admire her for her ability to get the law changed. I laughed through her father's reaction to her appearance on LARRY KING!! Good book, and now I'm ready to read Melissa Gilbert's book.

I haven't commented on Kate's new bogging job. First, calling her a columnist is like saying Jeffrey Weingarten is a Senate Page. I mean seriously, Kate has no journalistic chops whatsoever, and to rank her among the same people who write columns that ensure I have dictionary.com open on another tab so I can begin to comprehend their missives is, well, delusional.
Rhymes, alliterations, !!!!!!!!!!!!! marks and talking in dog-speak do not a writer make. Writers are Picasos of language and they can be descriptive, evocative and transcending.
Kate adds "ish" to the end of words and believes she invented a new one.
That said, I think Kate is hired to simply draw eyeballs to the site. Period.
If she did Mom Swap, it's done and so what? Who cares? It will be on some obscure cable network.
Her career will be a series of soul-sucking, soul-selling, pseudo-celeb, has- been reality tv personality shows.

It's the Valhalla of Suck.

I am responsible for the information I place on the internet. I don't indulge in facebook as I don't trust the operation as a whole. Social networking is scarey from all sides and there are way too many sicko's out there just spending their day ....well, being sickos.

All one has to do is read a few articles about cyberstalking and the horror stories. Ultimately, it is the sicko at fault as that person is an interloper, a destroyer, a person who lives a life consumed with malicious intent.

And what can we do to protect ourselves? The answer lies within the individual. We make the choices/decisions. In the case of this blog, Admin calls the shots, I respect that and I will not question her decisions.

I am sure most of us have walked away from things in our life, turning our backs and never looking back for whatever reasons. Same goes here. And in the working world, fellow employees have left the office, moving on to greener pastures or even being fired or laid off. Do we sometimes miss them, of course we do, not always.

It's life and time changes all.

What really bugs me is that anyone who hasn't been posting their fingers off is being labeled "deserter". That's so unfair. A few people have quit the blog and have posted to say that they are doing so. Just because someone isn't posting at the moment doesn't mean they've left. I haven't posted much the past few weeks because I'VE BEEN BUSY!! There are only so many hours in a day, and some of those hours absolutely must be devoted to unimportant things like eating and sleeping. It's also not advisable to post while driving a car. Simply posting here does not expose our IP address or info (as long as we don't include it in our posts).
IF a user has a google account (their name in pink/blue) and they've selected to NOT make their profile private and not reveal any info in it like e-mail addy, location, etc, they cannot be traced.

I encourage everyone who logs in with google to click on their own name in a post here and check their profile to make sure.

If posting with name/url as I do, there's no way anyone can detect ANY identifying info from our posts unless we write it. No way at all.

@Ex-Nurse~
Thanks for explaining. I've been pretty confused because I missed all this. I just want to be sure I understand...there are one or more fans of Kate out there who would like to get our personal info/personal identity info in order to cause us problems simply because we're not fans of Kate Gosselin...is that it in a nutshell? Is that basically what I need to be careful about?

On a different topic...since there are other women here around my age...most of my life I worried about what my parents would think...about anything I did...or was planning to do...or whatever. But I did realize (on some level) that the day would come when there might be no parents....that always having to worry about and factor in what my parents would think would be taken out of the equation.

The problem is...it NEVER occurred to me that when that day came...I would have to worry even more about what my sons (and their wives) would think. When I'd taken a look at some of the mommy-blogs, it reminded me of when my sons were that age....they traipsed around after me everywhere...to the store, etc. I was the cool mom...the nice mom. All their friends could come in, I gave them snacks, I went on the school trips, etc. They knew I was a sucker for them and they thought I was the greatest.

Except then they grew up (and started getting into their 30's)...and they have all their own new opinions....and some of them seem to be about me....or maybe I'm being too sensitive. But I catch those looks...between my sons and their wives...when I say things like, "well, maybe I'll wear..." or "I just don't feel like arguing with your dad..." , etc.

WTH? I'm 60..not 90..and dad and I are not senile...so back off! WE are still the parents!

The thing is...I did this to my own parents (my siblings and I)...and I could just cry. Why is it that we don't we learn these things until they happen to us?

Yes, I do appreciate that they care...and that they worry. But sheesh, I feel like I went from the frying pan into the fire. This is worse than having to worry about what my parents would think all those years.

I was smiling when I read your comments, because they also happened to me. I even once told my children that there is no genetic marker or hormone that is released when you become 30 that somehow makes you the boss of me!! My way of coping was to just flatly inform them that anything I do that they don't like or don't approve of is simply my revenge for the trouble they caused me and all the gray hairs they gave me when they were teenagers!! They came to terms with it...but I think they did because I really and truly didn't give a damn if they approved of me or not. @Ex Nurse and Remona Blue~

Thanks so much for letting me know that it's not just me. Remona Blue, I burst out laughing when I read "...that somehow makes you the boss of me". About a year ago my sons were attempting to advise me (unsolicited, mind you) about something....and after giving each other a LOOK...the oldest said something like (we want you to do it this way) "because WE don't want to be having to worry about you.....".

I was almost irate....but said nothing. But for several days I was having this imaginary conversation in my head that went something like..."YOU'RE not the boss of ME! Who asked you to be worrying about anything I do? If I need you to worry, I will LET you know! I'm still older than you!"

Sometimes they make me feel like I'm a problem-child....and the thing is...it's for things that they thought were so great when they were little kids...like striking-up conversations with total strangers in the grocery check-out line. Now they look at me as if that indicates encroaching senility (uh-oh, what the heck is she doing? Talking to perfect strangers as if she knows them).

fidosmommy said...

I only saw clips of Matt Damon Live today, but those were terrific. Classic is the word for sure. Loved it.

Right now I'm trying to live-trap a mouse. My cat died and she was a mouser even though she didn't have a tooth left in her head. The problem isn't really the trapping part (I have the proper equipment and peanut butter and cat food, both mouse faves) but what to do with him once he's trapped. It's too cold to release him outside. He'd either just find another house to invade or he'd freeze to death. So I'm thinking this through as carefully as possible.

Now, if this were a bat in my house, the police would be involved. And they would come. They have much sympathy for people with bats flying around their living rooms.

Well, all I have to say is that the things they thought made you great when they were little are still the things that make you what you are. The difference between us is that it never enters my mind that they're treating me like a problem child. What I think when they start is what I tell them...''Knock it off! Quit trying to boss me around. I'm gonna do what I want, and you will just have to deal!! End of discussion!''

I did have a big laugh when my oldest granddaughter told me that her mother said that I was ''eccentric'', and for her to ''just go with the flow...you'll have fun stories to tell your kids!'' It probably helps that we're in Texas and eccentric behavior is more or less accepted with a ''bless her heart''. lol

That's the funny thing about never actually doing anything other than your nails and hair, much less doing things with your kids--there just isn't much opportunity for blog fodder, i.e. interesting stories about your life.

Because Pioneer Woman is always actually doing crap with her kids, she has a wealth of blog fodder. On any given week there are posts about her son's football games, a trip to the rodeo, cookie baking together, taking a walk with her oldest girl and appreciating her newfound sense of style, hanging out with her sister when she's visiting, the occasional trip and the things she appreciated while gone, helping her husband around the ranch, funny anecdotes from filming her TV show. It's rather simple stuff, no big fireworks usually happen, there are no car accidents or explosions, but it's the TIME with people around you and the participation in what is happening around you, and then the ability to translate that to the written word, that creates good stories naturally and good Mommy blogs.

I don't see it with Kate. She lacks both the writing skills and the experiences.

Wowser said...

I read once that a good lie is detailed. I.e. don't just say yeah I got in a car accident this weekend. Say, I got in a car accident and broke this bone and that bone and the other car was a blue Toyota. You can tell someone is lying when if you ask for a lot of details they avoid them.

Kate's blog was anything but detailed. Very vague, yeah we went on a "trip" (where, when, how, why???) and she fixed some "stuff" with a "friend" (what stuff, where, when, what friend???) and oh by the way it's my birthday don't ya know? No not a big one like 40 or 50 just 38 but hey when you're 12 years old mentally birthdays are a BIG DEAL.

The vagueness and "any-man" phone-it-in bog is highly suspicious.

The last time he posted was Thanksgiving. Maybe he got a court date right after that so he went silent. Kate all of a sudden is to busy to tweet during December and January and not ONE picture of her kids is posted during that time (unusual for that picture taking Nazi).... It would make sense that if she was getting ready for court that she would do and avoid anything that would not present her as a "good mommy".....just sayin. ....smells fishy

Kate's fan would tune in if all Kate did was rewrite the Reading phone book and post it. They would consider her clever and talented for doing it. The rest of us know better.

Erma Bombeck was an American wonder in the area of humor and tale telling. While I don't expect
many, including Kate, to be that good, Erma had lots of fodder that she knew what to do with. She could turn a family dinner hour into a story that entertained perfect strangers. She knew just how to play it. Kate might do well to go read some of Erma's fine books and articles.

A woman in a former job had a similar gift. She was a less than pleasant person, but boy, could she tell a story. She was amazing to listen to and kept everyone's attention. A gift. One Kate Gosselin does not possess. At all.

Wow they need to expand their netflix options! From what I've seen the standards for TV have gone up like crazy over the past two years, and this would be a good thing and very much welcome after a decade of reality crap and low budget things. The shows on now have very strong writing, plot and Oscar winning actors. Even most reality shows are huge productions with gigantic crews and exotic locations and mostly scripted.

I really don't see how a show like Kate Plus 8 would ever even compete these days. There really isn't the market anymore for a simple bubble gum look at that family how cute type show. People are demanding much more of their TV. People want TV shows that are made with as much quality as a movie. Screeching and flailing around like a fool for 42 minutes isn't going to cut it. Kate left the scene for a year and a half and TV moved on without her--such as it goes. She wants to try the same old formula in a whole new world. Successful people adapt.

Next time someone says something that provokes you, just walk away.

I've been using the "So Hum Mantra" that we practice in yoga class. It really helps me relax, and prioritize what is truly important in my life (as opposed to indulging in stuff that is counter productive).

For anyone interested-

"So Hum Mantra"

Inhale deeply/slowly, and silently say the word "sooooo" (for the entire length of your inhale).
Then, exhale (deeply/slowly) silently with the word "hummmm" (again for the entire length of your exhale).

You are supposed to do this for 10-15 minutes,
but 5-10 works for me.

It's calming, and by the time you are done with your mantra, you don't give 2 sh*ts about anything negative.

Peace people.

Okay, so this is interesting, if not 100% verifiable at this point...re perhaps the most famous child star ever, Shirley Temple:

Stop what you are doing; Shirley Temple has joined Twitter.

Though her account has yet to be verified by Twitter, it appears the original child star joined the microblogging site on Jan. 23 and she's already got the hang of it. The 84-year-old, who now goes by the name Shirley Temple Black, has already amassed 6,100 followers, tweeted at Dyke Van Dyke and fielded some burning questions from her fans.

When asked what advice she had for today's child stars, the "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" actress told the fan: @XXXX to have personal integrity and live yor life as best you can- you should be a good influence on others. and Be a leader.

The former child star also answered a question about why she left Hollywood, telling a fan she "was drawn to diplomacy-to create a more peaceful world.I have great respect for the Foreign Service. (i left acting in 1950)~"

And rather fittingly, Temple was asked what she thinks of the current child star of the moment, Honey Boo Boo -- but she needed a bit of help: i have been asked what i think of "honey boo"", can someone tell me who that is~ January 24, 2013 6:16 pm via Mobile Web (M5)

Reps for Temple have not yet returned requests for comment to confirm if the actress joined Twitter.

@@@@@@@@@@

In the world, that is not adorable. It is Normal twin behavior. KK needs to educate herself on multiples and their lifetime interactions.

My sisters are twins....connected for life and probaly into the hereafter. They can go into two separate bookstores and come out with the same book, be cooking the same exct meal and think on the same wavelength. The stories are endless.

When one sister relocated halfway across the country, the other talked as if she was going to leave her family to be close to her sis.

Actually we are all connected closely as sisters. Once buying the exact same birthday card for my DD....just one story.

And we all have what I call ESPN, extra sensory perception networking.

Someone has told Kate to cut back on Twitter, I don't believe she stopped tweeting because she's been busy. Deanna, perhaps. She has a real career and probably came to her senses that she was putting herself in jeopardy with her constant defense of Kate, not to mention the discussions about custody.

I had a chuckle with this article on the Baltimore Sun by Z on TV. Seems Fox dumped Sarah Palin (or didn't renew her contract).

Here's the text of the article. Note the comparison to Kate Gosselin at the end:

Fox News dumps Sarah Palin after three-year misadventure in news

Call it another pitiful ending for Sarah Palin.

In what looks like a Friday afternoon leak-dump, RealClearPolitics first reported that Fox News had not renewed Palin's contract to be an analyst. That report was based on an unnamed source.

Brian Stelter, of the New York Times, later confirmed it on Twitter.

And so ends most of what's left of Palin's fling with fame since 2008, when she was named the GOP vice presidential candidate in a craven act John McCain should never be able to fully live down.

Fox News signed her in January of 2010 to be an analyst, complete with a $1 million studio built in her home in Wasilla.

Her contract ended Dec. 31, 2012, and was not renewed.

I wonder what happens to the studio now. It's a far more interesting question than what happens to Palin, who now ranks somewhere around Kate Gosselin in relevance and public opinion."

---------------------------------------
That sounds so familiar to me (brings back memories). I'm the oldest of 7 (4 girls and 3 boys) and we were all in the competition to marry the best husband, have the nicest house, send the kids to the most impressive colleges.....and I just want to tell you...things change a LOT years later. I guess, looking back, that we were mainly on a quest to please our parents (who are no longer here).

So with 7 siblings...there were 18 grandchildren...and it turns out that the ones that were sent to those really prestigious colleges far from home...have made new lives there....and never returned home after they graduated....or they've gone to graduate school even farther away. One of my sisters...probably the wealthiest of all of us...married for money...and now that the kids have all left and have lives elsewhere...she's talking about divorce. She had the perfect fairy-tale life....but now that it's just her and hubby in that massive McMansion...she's decided she's not happy.

Meanwhile, hubby and I...who lived a very mediocre middle-class life here....ended up being best friends and get along far better than we did through most of the marriage. Just me, him and the dog.

My husband is also one of 7 siblings (but he's in the middle) and his oldest brother, by far the most successful of any of them...when their 2 children graduated and started new lives half-way across the country...his wife decided she'd had enough and moved to where their daughter lives and never came back....and now he's in that big house all my himself.

Life changes....especially once your kids grow up and start their own lives....and wealth and the square-footage of your home doesn't necessarily guarantee happiness. You have to just live the happiest life you can.

I guess there are people who get thrills out of "outings" all across the web. Look at this:

(CNN) -- In anger over the recent death of an Internet activist who faced federal charges, hackers claiming to be from the group Anonymous threatened early Saturday to release sensitive information about the U.S. Department of Justice.
They claimed to have one such file on multiple servers ready for immediate release.
The hackers apparently hijacked the website of the U.S. government agency responsible for federal sentencing guidelines, where they posted a message demanding the United States reform its justice system or face incriminating leaks to select news outlets.
The lengthy, eloquently written letter was signed "Anonymous."
The suicide of Internet activist Aaron Swartz on January 11 triggered the posting of the hackers' message to the web address of the United States Sentencing Commission, they said.
His death, which they blamed on the justice system, "crossed a line," the letter said.

I spent some time this morning checking out CafeMom/the Stir. The majority of the staff writers there seem to have writing background/credentials. It looks more like a magazine type of site to me. Could Kate make a decent income being one of the writers there?

And the website Kate had...couldn't she have made it more of a mommy-blog and gotten income from hits and ads like some of the really popular ones do? I'd imagine she would have had to spend a good bit of time on her own mommy-blog if she'd had a really successful one.

I can see how CM might have hired her just for the hits she brings to the site. There were 189 comments and many were complaining that lots of others had been deleted. And from looking around...even 189 comments is quite a high response compared to the numbers most of the other articles had received. Love her or hate her, she does seem to bring the hits to the site.

I'd really be curious to know how much editing her first article/entry required. It was okay...not terrible or anything...but when you're writing about everyday life, you need to be able to write really funny or clever articles...or else there's nothing really noteworthy about them. I just can't see Kate writing entertaining stories about her zany or madcap life.
There's plenty that people would love to know about Kate's real life....but she's not going to write that stuff.

Anyway I'm not sure what the quibble is over. The law undisputedly came about because people bombarded their local legislatures with complaints about Jon and Kate Plus 8 and possible labor violations and poor protections. There's no disputing Kate caused the whole thing. Although Murt opened it up to examine ALL productions in PA, Kate started it. I think it's fair to say it was "in Kate's name" figuratively speaking.

They bought so much stuff that one had to leave the other, going home to unload then returning for her sis. lol So, on a shopping trip, they asked me to meet them, just in case.

It was not long after that, I traded for a new shiney sports car of my own. Car wars soon ended with each of them driving Mazdas and Hondas.

How could it be "all night?" She tweeted that around 10 p.m. her time...hardly all night, a few hours at most.

Isn't it possible that the one twin's friend where the sleepover was held is also friends with the other twin since they all go to school together, and therefore both girls were on the phone with the one who was left at home?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Chef it's pretty normal twin behavior.

But I think it's okay for Kate to limit it. I.e. no calling ALL EVENING, that's a little excessive. Twins or not sadly, they will have to learn how to be apart sometimes. Twins I know go to school in different states (one is at a special school) and it's VERY hard on them, BUT, they also learned from a young age how to have their own interests, groups of friends, and how to be without each other--so I think that has really helped them get through this. Still hard though to see them truly aching for each other, and they're a lot older than Mady and Cara. They were eight years old before they even spent the night in separate beds. I know Working Woman took a break but I am almost positive she said she is a twin. If she's lurking around, maybe she could weigh in.... :)

IS there a possibility that whoever hired Kate was unaware of all her negative image issues? Or were they only interested in bringing traffic to the site? There ARE quite a few negative articles about her on CM.

What I find really interesting is that any site that allows the "sheeple"/fans versus the "haters"/non-fans wars to be waged in their comments section is sure to draw crowds. But are they also concerned about their own image? Or are they just looking to drive traffic to the site?

It appears to me that Kate's biggest audience by far consists of those who are engaged in the fan versus non-fan wars and those who want to watch them slug it out. But do they want those slug-fests on their site?

Without that, I don't see the huge attraction and would think that if the comment section is kept nice and aseptic...the traffic will dwindle to an eventual trickle.

Winsomeone and chefsummer--I only went to Kate's website to see if she was doing any promotion for her new gig. It seemed rather strange that while she did mention her blog at the Stir on the main page, you had to go to the second page to get to the link. You would have thought that she would put the link on the main page to make it easier for her fans to find it.

When she was blogging for CC, she had the link at the bottom of her main page. But her main page now just has the titles of her last 2 posts. Even the "search" function isn't posted there. If you want to search for a topic, you actually have to click on one of the posts, and then the "search" bar will appear.

I also remember her saying about a month or so ago that she would be updating the site with new pictures--the last pictures posted are from the beach trip in August.

It just seems like her website is an afterthought now, and she doesn't really want to be bothered with it.

She is off the radar as revealed by the lack of publicity, not like her gig at CC. There is no way this woman desires to be low profile. Do Re Me(Mi).

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

We have good hearts here. So many people said oh hopefully she's spending more time with the kids, isn't it great she actually has to do all these things without much hired help, maybe she is finally realizing she is cooked and is being a NORMAL mother.

Of course that was not the case, of course she was up to no good all this time, cooking up more dead end publicity jobs for herself. Why do we keep giving her the benefit of the doubt? I guess that's what good people do.

IS there a possibility that whoever hired Kate was unaware of all her negative image issues? Or were they only interested in bringing traffic to the site? There ARE quite a few negative articles about her on CM.

I've wondered that, too. According to Wikipedia:

Since the end of 2008, CMI Marketing has been growing. CafeMom reaches 8.1 million unique visitors (ComScore, July 2011) and more than 20 million unique visitors to the CafeMom Plus Network.[18] CafeMom Plus is a network of mom-oriented websites who are in partnership with CafeMom, including: Birthday Partnership Ideas; Coupon Cabin; Education.com; and Families.com.

You'd think if they were in partnership with Coupon Cabin, they'd be aware of Kate's firing and CC's statement that she didn't fit in with their efforts for "authenticity."

Perhaps Cafe Mom is only interested in hits. Like CC, they may tire of the controversy in time.

It seems like Kate would learn a lesson or two about promoting what ever she does.

You'd think she promote the positive things she working on with her website or twitter.

But I guess she's a 8 trick pony.-LOL

Again, twitting about what her children are doing (sleepover, look they do have friends!), especially when she has been twitter silent for weeks is just another chapter in her refusal to understand boundaries. Twit about your own life. I might even put money down that her new bogging job will consist of weekly posts about the children, and only that. Dangerous slope.

About twins- they are fraternal- aren't they supposed to be no closer than any two siblings? I suppose these girls may be more
dependent on one another as they have been so sheltered all their lives.

Anyway I don't think it's 'cute' to spend a sleepover at someone else's house on the phone even if the hostess is a friend. I would think the girls have different friend since Cara is more into sports and Mady drama etc.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I don't know any identical twins very well--I have heard they can be extremely close too. But I've seen the same thing with fraternal. You shared the womb and shared the breast and shared all kinds of intimate things you don't directly share with siblings different in ages. It creates a very unique and special bond even if you don't have the same DNA. It's completely normal to feel like half of you is missing when you are apart, as I've heard it described. When you are a twin for the longest time you never have to go anything alone. All us singletons had to face all our "firsts" pretty much "alone." Potty training and going to kindergarten and all that scary stuff. But twins always had a buddy, a built in security blanket. I imagine it creates a real co-dependence. Normal behavior, though not necessarily cute, and not necessarily something that should be actively encouraged, as in the real world today, you won't be able to always be together.

What fascinates me even more is conjoined twins. Some of them say they literally would NOT want to be separated. I think if medical science would be able to separate Abby and Brittany, they would need intensive therapy just to even function by themselves. I think they would be petrified.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Another reason Mady and Cara might be so close.....the tups.

Mady and Cara are the only ones in that family who truly understand what it's like to be the big sisters to all those tups. They have been through so much together with all the publicity the tups created not to mention going through the entire TV show together. They had to play second fiddle together so long, but at least they could play second TOGETHER. I totally buy that their bond is incredible.

Actually, I've often thought, thank God they have each other. The shit will hit the fan eventually but the twins will have each other. My bets are they will be the first to write a book.

--------------------------------------
Of course, we don't know for SURE why she got fired from CC. We speculated on several possibilities....Hoffman's book had come out shortly before that, we'd noted she was doing little to nothing to promote CC, etc.

I just can't figure Kate out. If you're hell-bent on wanting to keep yourself out there...WHY do you put so little effort into the opportunities you get? I just don't understand that.

Does she consider them beneath her so not worth any extra effort? Because she's still waiting for that BIG break? Little breaks can lead to bigger ones. Surely she knows that by now, I'd think.

I still kinda scratch my head over why she even brings so many hits. I have to believe that by far the biggest factor is the fan versus non-fan wars that seem to erupt everywhere she is or goes.
Does she still think that somehow....everyone is going to develop selective amnesia and she can manage to take back that (fake) role-model mom identity? If she fakes it long enough?

She seems so determined to remain relevant....yet she seems so uninterested in and puts so little effort into the opportunities she gets.

Milo's actually getting to go away somewhere without her husband?
I remember reading quite some time ago that he made her go to bed when he did. (and how he got the name LOM?) That really creeped me out. My husband tried to pull that on me many decades ago and I put a stop to that real fast. I said, "who are you? The police? I'll go to bed when I want to".
Lol...Kate needs a LOM....yeah, that would work.

Anyone else notice K8 is once again re-inventing herself? Can-do Kate, supermom positivity queen didn't get her anywhere. She could tweet all day and still get all done! Since her vacation we've heard that she's too busy to tweet, driving her kids everywhere, and actually tweeted and wrote about 2013 kicking her ass. No more you can find the positive in anything...She is now going to try and be the hilariously frazzled mother of 8(!)with two (in almost a year) teens. The pic she put in her bog even was a less than flattering one with her hair messy and a frustrated look on her face.

---------------

This makes so much sense. For Kate, if one thing doesn't work, just move on and try another. She still has some of that Teflon coating remaining and is able to con a sucker to pay her for doing next to nothing.

Smoochie said...

My take on Kate's new 'job' is that it is different from CC. At CC she was supposed to be promoting their services, cost savings, etc. and failed miserably.

At Cafe Mom, the job is to do what she actually did at CC, preen, talk about herself, how wonderful of a mommy she is and how much her kids love and admire everything she does. LOL anyone with kids knows that's not true! They 'hired' her for hits and good luck to them, cause they'll get them, good and bad. However, is it enough to support her family, doubtful and unless the visitors are clicking the advertisers links, she won't make them money and that's what it's all about. She needs to take it seriously and bog more than 1 or 2 times a month or it will be a total bust ... again! Kate doesn't like real work as was evidenced on her show and by all the help she has and I'd be surprised if this holds her interest.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I'm almost kind of impressed the way Kate has managed to make a career out of getting paid to just do NOTHING. I mean she gets paid to do what we all do normally. It's amazing. Just like you said this job is even LESS work than CC. It doesn't appear she has to lift a finger, she just has to talk about herself for a few minutes once a week which she does anyway, so. I mean the blogs are no harder than writing an email about herself to her BFF. Except just slap the label "bog" on it.

Its like most people in their career want to move up the chain and take on increasing responsibility and more challenging things. For her the less the better.

Admin, I think Kate has just had to accept this no-effort blogging stuff since there's obviously nothing more effortless-worthy being offered to her, and she'll take her grifting and/or sponsorships however she has to.

I wonder if her contract with The Stir also included Stevie's continued servicing...uh, I mean services.

Jane said...

Now that the twins are having sleepovers, of course they're Googling and going on Twitter and Facebook with friends. Wonder if that's part of why Kate's cut back? Of course, she can't undo all the damage that she did, though.

Kate went on twitter asking her tweeties if they knew where could get a DVD of a Disney movie. Lots of new tweeties coming out of the woodwork to help her find a copy.

I wonder if she will consider this to be her "tweety" party?

I skimmed through her blog and laughed when I got to the part where she said she put her career aside. What does she consider her career to be? Seems to me that TLC, CC, and every other outlet that was interested in her was responsible for ending whatever career she thought she had. She put nothing aside. Others did it for her.

I just can't understand why she would want to blog for a site that has been so unkind to her in the past. I did a search for the articles there, and gosh, they really were not favorable to her at all.

"Kate went on twitter asking her tweeties if they knew where could get a DVD of a Disney movie. Lots of new tweeties coming out of the woodwork to help her find a copy."

Not very resourceful, is she? Has she never heard of Google or ebay? Oh, wait...if you find it yourself, you actually have to BUY it rather than have your tweeties send it to you!

I also noticed that even though the Jenner girls are using that name they supersede it with a Kardashian lead in.

If I am not mistaken Kris testified in the OJ case or was certainly present as she was very beautiful even then and had that stay quality presence about her even then.

What specific movie is she talking about that costs $60. She doesn't know how to work E-Bay? Huh? That is the first place I look for everything. It is usually there.

You know in thinking about Kris Jenner saying absolutely not those are not mine I never did such a thing, it struck me that there is no libel when it comes to a dead man. She can say all she wants about him, he is a liar, he made this all up, the whole thing is bogus, and he will never be able to sue her. It doesn't matter if they are true, she is scott free to say they are lies all the live long day.

It's not so easy to accuse someone of lying when the author is alive and has a family and can be libeled and can sue you because they ARE telling the truth.
