Lessons learned from Ken Burns's 'The Dust Bowl'

We want it now. And if it makes money now, it's a good idea. But it isn't necessarily a good idea if the things we're doing are going to mess up the future--it wasn't a good idea. Don't deal on the moment. Take the long term look at things." --Wayne Lewis, child of the Dust Bowl.

Discuss PBS’s The Dust Bowl, airing November 18th and 19th. Check local listings. Order on DVD/Blu-ray here

What caused all the terrifying images of dust storms we saw? According to scientists and historians, a number of things. Some natural, like drought:

Some not so natural, like overplowing:

Planting the same crops over and over:

And most of all greed:

Ken Burns created another masterpiece, but this time his documentary went beyond his usual comprehensive collection of anecdotes woven together into a beautiful patchwork quilt to tell the story of a generation--there was something much more ominous about this one. It came in its surprisingly dark warnings to us as the film drew to a close. Don't be lured in by what sounds good and makes money now. Rather, think of the future. In all that we do we must think carefully of the future. This could happen again. And he wasn't just talking about dust storms. The message is as applicable today as it was then. But will those who need to hear it the most listen?

I'm sure Milo reads here. If anyone is talking about "her girl" she's reading it! I've seen her tweet about "rocking it" before. Sounds silly coming from a 50 something woman.

Just about everything Milo tweets sounds silly.

She sure would be easy to entertain for an afternoon. Just hang a picture of Kate on the wall and you can leave the house. She'd be happy as a cat with a soft blanket.

Spoiler for Dancin With Them Thar Stars!
Saint Tony Dovolani of the Ballroom, and his lovely partner Melissa, DID make it to the finals next week! Yea Tony! That means to help them win, we all need our dialing fingers in great shape on Monday night!
What does everyone think of the two couples who went home, and the two that remain along with Saint Tony?
FYI, for anyone new, Tony WAS a saint to put up with Shopping Kart Kreider as a partner. He is finally getting to the finals with a partner who can do his choreography! I think Tony is one of the best and most patient teachers on the show, he has a dance school in new York, and those two reasons are why he got stuck with the Shopping Kart.

It's not up to a company to pay you a living wage. It's your job to figure that out. They have a responsibility to their shareholders to pay the minimum amount of money for the most profits.

To fit into the Dust Bowl theme and add the BCS/Turkey bowl theme the book "12 Mighty Orphans" by Jim Dent is great. Aside from from football and life it brings up the question of whether orphanages were a better option than foster families. And speaking of football and money (all too often together) anyone see that Maryland is joining the Big 10 for the cash? I just hope it can bring back the sports they binned so that they could continue to pay out to the football coaches.

Sorry, Joy. My vote is going to Shawn. As much as I like Tony and would be thrilled to see him win, Shawn is a better dancer. I was disappointed that Emmitt went home. I was hoping it would be Kelly. There's just something about her that I can't warm up to.

Moose Mania, Shawn and Kelly already have their mirror ball trophies from prior seasons. Melissa is the only one woo has not won a mirror ball in the past. She and Saint Tony deserve to go all the way!

Hubby got "laid off" this week. Stinking manager laid off 5 of the employees. He did it in a really cold way. As they went in his office to get their pay checks, he handed each of the guys their check and then said, "Your services are no longer required."

The next day 5 friends of his had the jobs of the guys he laid off. It is perfectly legal. It is an at will state. No reason need be given.

Rotten. Absolutely rotten.

I can understand that, and I know Shawn won before, but I look at it another way. The best dancer should be the winner, regardless of how many trophies they have. Otherwise, it's a popularity contest, which has been one of the criticisms of the show. You don't vote for someone because he/she doesn't have a trophy. If you did, there would be no reason for the contest.

I hope Shawn wins, but I won't be disappointed if it goes to Tony and Melissa.

As much as I believe there are some days people should not have to work...we have to look back in time.100 years ago people/families worked 24/7. They had to! To keep food on the table and money coming in...people had to work.
So now fast forward 100 years and what do we have? Greedy people.People have to work to keep the greedy people getting what they want...A new smart phone...the new tablet...the newest video game...the new I-phone...omg a crock pot...dvd's for a whole dollar...ect ect..
If there wasn't a market for this it wouldn't be there.
WE the people make this happen.If we didn't line up and camp out,there wouldn't be this black friday.People would not have to work on a holiday where they could be spending time giving thanks with their families.

Just like kate.You followed everything kate...you watched...you spent time looking everything up.And you wonder why she's still making news?
Really?
Also Unions...really? Take some time and look that up.
My mother fought for a union in the 70's...she fought rayovac to get women maternity rights.Try Dvorak vs Rayovac in wisconsin. My mother was also one of the 1st women to work in construction in the late 70's-80's.She was laughed at and put aside...BUT yet she did the work and earned the respect of her male co-workers.
Unions didn't fail us...the rich who thought the working class didn't matter is what failed!

Haven't had a chance to read all of the posts on this thread, or the Dust Bowl threads.  But, I want to weigh in on some of the many topics that are being discussed.

So often, our family cannot be together on holidays or birthdays-- it isn't a big deal to reschedule to a convenient time. My daughter lives in another state and works in a very popular dessert shop. Although it is closed on TG, she has to work on Friday and Saturday. Rather than spending 6 hours round trip within 24 hours, we are getting together on Sunday. This is the first holiday since my husband and I separated,  and it is important that we acknowledge that we are going through very strange times and that we keep it simple. My daughters aren't ready to see their dad and one of them hasn't spoken to him since he moved out. According to my son, my husband is "opting out" of the holidays this year, which is, as far as I am concerned, a blessing.

IMO, there is way too much pressure and stress around holidays and celebrations. I love my family every single day of the year, and I just don't put that much importance on any one particular day. My DIL and son will be with her family on TG, so there was no conflict with our family.  I was very honest with my DIL's mother, and, hopefully, she is not offended.

Since we are Jewish, and 2 of my kid's spouses are Christian, we steer clear of Christmas for our holiday gathering. The world doesn't shut down, or even acknowledge,  our most religious Jewish holidays (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), and, the majority of Jewish employees have to take an unpaid day if they want to be able to attend synagogue.  This year, Chanukah is early in the month and long over before Christmas day.  None of my kids will have time off around Chanukah so we are celebrating it on New Years day.

I am also a small business employer, and our employees have a paid holiday on Thursday. However, we have to respond to emergency calls, so some employee may have to work. If so, then they get holiday pay of 1-1/2 times hourly and they have the choice of having a different paid day off or receiving 8 hours of additional pay. Hopefully, the employees of the big box stores will get a similar deal.

Well said. You can bet that my friends and I do NOT have nor covet the latest electronic gadget. I live quite simply out of necessity and do not even own a cell phone. The computer I'm using was a hand me down from my parents. Thank God for my family. I thank them every time I see them.

I just think there is a very large gap between the upper middle class and the lower income class that encompasses much more than money.

How I would love to go to a gym! To hear someone else making up excuses so they don't HAVE to go (you really DON'T have to go, you know - gym memberships are luxuries in my world) plus hearing Kate give her very young daughter's VERY expensive cell phones (toys) and then bitching about it gets my blood boiling.

I'm happy for everyone that can afford these luxuries. I just don't get why you don't enjoy them but instead complain about them.

There is a gym nearby the shelter that offers to transfer gym memberships from customers who bought them and find they didn't use them to pass them on to the abused women. It was great! Those few short months some women got s really tremendous increase of their self esteem which then helped them (sometimes) find a job. It was also wonderful therapy and a way for some of them to work out their residual anger.

I'm not so sure I want to be upper middle class. It sounds so very complicated and one may lose sight of what is really important.

Again, I mean no disrespect. I'm just commenting on what i've read here lately. A lot of you talk about the lack of core family values due to too many material things but is any one really willing to do any of this downsizing?

(I'm almost afraid to hit 'send' on this post - but here I go LOL)

Starz22 said...

Greedy Gosselins...
I have to agree with you.The gap between the middle class and lower class is whats driving us to be undecided.
My biggest concern is NOT a gym membership...Altho I would like one...I just cant' do it...my ex is over 26 thousand behind in support...I know its not alot to the repubs...Thats over 6 years behind in support.My kid's father hasen't seen them in almost 7 years now.
I had Scott Walker asking/begging for votes....saying food stamps and insurance needed to stop...What did he do for single women? Nothing!!
If they cracked down on dead beat dads..parents...NOT many women would need help.If women got the support they deserve...the line for food stamps and health insurance would drop by 75%...
Crack down on dead beat parents....All states will benifit.!!!!!

I'm puzzled each time there are complaints about prematurely posted results of a tv episode. This blog does a great job of respecting each other's and Admin's wishes about this. I think it's kind of silly to be so upset about seeing results spoiled here or on any blog. We're supposedly all mature adults, right? I think it's unfair to ask no one to talk about it until the next day, as some have done. If making sure the results are a surprise until you can watch the show yourself, then stay off the net.

Good Morning All. Just a few thoughts on unions. Generally, I believe they are a good thing and certainly 50 years ago an absolute necessity. Now, not so much.

Ottawa transit went on strike from Dec 10 - Feb 2, 2009. In the beginning - well, Christmas was coming and lots of people were off during that time. But, lots of people who depend on public transit couldn't get to their jobs and downtown was a mass of car pools - got so that traffic snarls were starting at 6:00 am.

Then came January, in Ottawa, in the cold and snow and people were starting to really hurt. Mostly students, seniors, etc. Couldn't get to school or work or Drs appointments. You get the picture. Personally, my husband and I did a lot of driving friends to various appointments, etc.

My opinion of unions became to take a dive. When it starts to affect the lives of 1,000's of innocent people, I just have trouble giving support.

Lilly said...

btw - daily ridership on the transit is in the order of 535,000. that's a lot of folks.

Also, I go to these sites rather than the internet news because I was killing time before I watched it with my daughter and figured I could laugh and shake my head at the nutsy behavior of Kate and some of the funny stories people have. I very seldom post so I can see where I may be classified as a bored sheeple because people may not recognize me. Dont assume all of us infrequent posters are sheeples; trust me I for one am most certainly not. I just asked if we could keep the results quiet for a least a few hours so the rest of us could catch up. But I do not wish to cause any problems and did not mean to offend if I did. The top article in our newspaper this morning was 'stores will open tomorrow for early shopping and lines are already forming. At Best Buy the lines began forming on Monday morning . They have their tents and grills for cooking. I cannot even imagine what you could possibly want to buy that would make me do such a thing. Well, in my case, nothing. I'll buy whatever on another day and pay a bit more rather than that. So I guess the logic behind the stores opening so early is because of demand and the almighty dollar. Very sad on both sides.

As far as spoilers go please don't spoil or hint about things until they have aired completely on the West Coast. Unfortunately sometimes that won't be until the next day for people headed to bed. I vaguely remember the Blue Law. Everything was closed on Sundays. I do remember when the Blue Law ended and how my mom reacted to being able to buy something on a Sunday. It was weird,lol.

In my grandparent's time (they were farmers), no one worked on Sundays, except maybe during harvest time.

The irony was not lost on me that it was considered a sin to work on Sunday, yet no one had a problem eating out after church! (I guess those cooks, wait-persons weren't 'working'?) But that goes back to consumerism, supply and demand....if there wasn't a demand, the restaurants wouldn't have been open.

Last night (at my boot camp aerobics class) I found out that someone in our community is very ill. She had breast & liver cancer 6 years ago, had surgery + treatment, and the disease went into remission. Recently, she came down with a very bad cold and went to the doctor. Unfortunately since that visit, she was diagnosed again with cancer. Sadly, it has spread throughout her entire body.

Very sad.

When giving thanks this year, we pray for people like her, who are in pain (mentally & or physically). We give thanks & pray for our brave soldiers & their families. We pray for, and extend a helping hand to people that food, and clothing. We give thanks for freedom.
We give thanks for peace.

God bless all of you.

Unions were formed for very specific reasons (Norma Rae, anyone?). And though I agree that their mission (their m.o.) has changed over time, I'd be reluctant to say they should be disbanded. Think about the state of Ohio or Michigan. No doubt, there were issues that needed addressing, but the intent was to shatter their unity and eliminate their protections altogether.

An imperfect analogy: Many of you are old enough to remember how hard we women worked to break through the proverbial glass ceiling. Legal protections got put into place, including (most recently) the Lilly Leadbetter Act. We're still fighting for an Equal Rights Amendment, ludicrous as that might seem. But some of the things that were said during the last election cycle...well. Goes to show that the fight goes on, and the battle is never won.

Greedy there are many cheap options for the gym. I've never paid full price for the gym. The Y is one of them. You can also talk to local colleges, retirement centers, and high schools and see if they will let you use their facilities for free or discounted. Costco also has a very cheap 24 hour Fitness membership for two years that works out to be about 11 bucks a month--that was my option. It's less than two cups of Starbucks. If you can't afford that there are tons of free resources to get in a workout at home on Youtube, or from the local library, even PBS shows some workout shows in the morning. There's running shoes, a jump rope, bottles filled with sand for weights--all can be done at home. Been there done that. Exercising does not have to off limits on a budget. Sorry if I offended you by making a little joke. I don't not appreciate things and I'm not sure why you keep making little digs at me.

On her lunch breaks, one of my kids eats at a place frequented by plenty of TX Highway Patrol. At first she was a bit uncomfortable due to all the weaponry, I told her she was eating in the safest place in town! lol

One of my relatives had a corvette a while back, said when he drove it he had '24 hour police protection'. LOL

Formely Duped no you can talk about what you want to talk about. I would like to see though no one tweet her but I don't tell people what to do.

------------

Like you, I hope the lack of tweeting continues. Twitter is the only thing that's keeping her public now and the more the fans tweet, the more the media will see what kind of fan she attracts - a few teens (or younger) and some crazies as well as a has-been blog. Really, look at what Milo and Goody and CJ tweet to her -- it's pure idiocy!

Please hear me out to the late nighters here. You are embarrassing us. It's one thing to hate on someone who didn't work hard to get where they are and received mostly freebies for so long but it's very sad and uncalled for to hate on and be bitter people who work hard and have done well and get things the traditional way. I think it gives the sheeple ammunition because it proves we really are just jealous of good people having success, so try to think about how we sound to them and how when you are bitter about good things and good people you prove that we are "just jellus."

Stores open on Sunday/holidays:
I am very old, so I remember when no stores except gas stations were open on Sunday in California. No store opened on holidays. Dad bought the Sunday paper at the gas station in the 1940's. In the later 1940's we moved to NC, and the same thing was true there. In the early 1950's we moved to Massachusetts and again, nothing open on holidays or Sundays. (Back when my dad was a kid, boys went to work in the cotton mills at the age of 10, but never on a holiday or Sunday.) If we didn't get what we needed on Saturday, then we had to do without. We were middle-class and had one car, one tv, one "record player", but since repairing radios was one of Dad's hobbies we had plenty of those. Dad worked Monday through Friday, and an occasional Saturday overtime, but NO Sundays or holidays. Mom managed the household and sold oil paintings as a minor sideline. Kids could have a part time job as long as grades were good. NOBODY "needed" to work on Sunday.
No Ipods, Ipads, Irobots, laptops, Bluetooths, cell phones, video games.
Wish we could go back to those days.

Admin: Thanks :) Wasn't sure. I don't tweet and wouldn't tweet Kate anyhow!

I am thankful for such a great open-minded Admin here and all the wonderful posters.

Finished Melissa Francis' book- wow- her stage mom was awful, the emotional blackmail more than the physical. Sad but luckily Missy came through it well. Won't put in spoilers as it's quote an interesting autobiography.

Also watched Little People's new wedding special, the first one, On Demand. They seem to be doing well- I mean, the same, bickering over debt and expanding the land and its uses. The kids are older and the youngest appeared on screen very little.

I'm almost afraid to be around anyone who has anxieties about stores being closed on holidays. Good lord if you're not prepared at home for a simple holiday store closure you'd be absolutely helpless in an emergency like, say, a power outage of a week or so.

Big retail corporations are doing a fine job of turning people's brains to mush.

I know right? It's really not that hard to get used to. When I was living in a place that treated the Sunday as a high holy day, basically on Saturday we had to take an inventory, make sure we weren't out of milk or gas, and that was that.

Also in Israel when I studied abroad there, Shabbat came every week rain or shine and you observed it. So again you just plan ahead, make sure you have what you need by sundown Friday night, and you're good to go. I came to really enjoy the quieter, reverent Saturdays. God bless those poor people by the way. They were so wonderful. Many places around the world take both holidays and a holy day once a week and survive-and thrive. I loved hearing Shabbat Shalom, it was like music. They are a reverent people.

I watched a few minutes of Little People. I was kind of bored by it, but that's okay, you know what I appreciate about them? They find many, many other sources of income and ways to make money. They never had to feel chained to their reality show or they wouldn't make it, because they had many other cash flows. Diversification if you can do it is a great thing. Love him or hate him Matt has read some money books.

My only concern with this boycott is the timing is bad. It's the holidays, Kate can distract herself with cooking and her greed and may not notice as much she is DOA. The boycott may have to persist for a very long time for her to really notice it, and by that time I'm not sure all those people will be able to hold out.

I did notice she tweeted a couple more "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger stand a little taller YEEA!!" platitudes the past couple days. Something definitely happened.

Re: Little People. I just wonder if they need the TV money as the wedding renovations, staff hired and buying new land put them further in debt according to Amy. Three kids in college? Amy and Matt are very different but seem to work it out. I do admire all Matt has accomplished. I like the show although agree now it's a bit stale.I really like Amy and Matt although I could not live with him!

Aren't members of the RWA community the majority of the "haters" that have kept Kate relevant? We'll see if they can continue with their boycott. It's also rather pretentious and arrogant to "make fun" of this blog because we feel comfortable enough to talk about other subjects other than "Kate Gosselin".

Sorry admin to break the rule about talking about other blogs.

Jane, there were tears this morning when I heard Tel Aviv was attacked again. It is where I stayed for a month. It is so beautiful, so warm, so welcoming. I never once felt like Americans, even Christians, weren't welcome. I even thought I might someday retire there.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Paula it's okay. I've been nothing but respectful to that blog so it's kind of disappointing to hear we are being made fun of. I thought we were on the same side here. Well, I have no interest in outing people, but I believe they sincerely are against child exploitation just like we are. I don't like infighting.

Yes! Don't give away crap on reality show's...DWTS How dare you! There's nothing more important going on.
We have another WAR going on..but how dare you,not say you had a spoiler?

****************

By that logic, nobody should care about Twitter boycotts either since there are more important things going on. There are more important things than Kate Gosselin going on at every moment of the day, so why are you here?

Hi sj girl, sorry about the spoilerage, but I did wait until after the broadcast time on the left coast. I am so very very very happy for Saint Tony and Melissa! This season is just showcasing what a gifted teacher and choreographer he is.

----------------

Joy, I know you did wait until after it ended on the West Coast, but your first post indicated that you were happy with the results. This happened BEFORE the show ended on the West Coast, and I believe those who still hadn't seen it knew then, from your post, that Melissa and Tony made it because you were excited about the finalists. You didn't have to give the actual names, but your excitement is what spoiled it.

Next time, just to keep everyone happy, don't post if you are thrilled or disappointed, even if you don't reveal any names! :)

~~~~~~~~
JoyinVirginia, you DID wait till DWTS aired on the West Coast, so your comment was NOT a ''spoiler'' at all, and in my opinion, you have nothing to be sorry about!! It is nonsense for anyone to expect no discussion about something they haven't yet gotten around to watching. Period. Good grief....I thought we were adults here!!
Love how you gals ask for a twitter silence now,after 5+ years of Kate.
&&&
Read back a bit. We were asking for Twitter silence pretty much as soon as Kate started tweeting. I remember her first week not only was she tweeting on average once every five minutes, but she was embarrassing the kids and herself constantly. We were one of the first to tell her to please get off and for folks to please stop tweeting her.
Starz22 said...
Twitter silence after 5 years? Admin I couldn't find the rest of the post you responded to...
This blog has done nothing but beg kate to shut the hell up.
This woman is vile and self-serving...Willing to pimp the kids out for anything and everything.
I will admit alot here watched and bitched,when if they didnt watch, kate would have not got the ratings.
I think too much time was given to kate.But thats done and over now.
What we can do is flood anything and everything that kate will be on or want to do with the TRUTH. Kate Gosselin is a Child and Animal ABUSER.
Spread the word...refer them to Roberts book...
Kate Gosselin IS a Child and Animal Abuser!
Sorry kate,I will never let this go until you get the help you SO much need.
