One of America's first sets of famous multiples said no to freebies

No they did not do it, too: Reflecting back on their childhoods, Baltimore's famous Henn quads, born in 1947, say the family didn't want to forever live off the generosity of others.  Their dad "turned all that down, because we just want to be a normal family."

Yet another family in Kate's shoes is going on record saying they wanted something different for their multiples. (Other families have also shunned Kate's choices, including the Headricks.)

In 1947, three boys and one girl were born to a young World War II vet and his British wife who had recently made their home together in the United States. Hard to believe today, but the public was just as curious about the four babies as the much higher-order multiples that made news decades later.

Publicity and freebies naturally followed, but Dad Charles only accepted a few select offerings and instead worked two jobs to support the family. He taught the children "if you want something, find a way to work and pay for it. That's the way we were brought up."

The Henn family in 2000.
As for the Gosselins, the quads say it's all about the money: "You know, I think they're after the money, versus we at the time didn't care about that. We just wanted to be normal."

The children went on to be just that, normal, well-adjusted adults with successful careers, including real estate, teaching, photography and serving in Vietnam. The only girl, Joan, even coached the University of Arkansas women's basketball and then helped special needs children until her death from cancer in 2000.

Good job, Mr. and Mrs. Henn.

I think her so-called "paperwork" is sending off pleas to companies to grift or get paid to mention them on Twitter. My antennae went up when she responded to the basket tweeter, and how else would Pop Chips have her address? You know, what she is doing (not the grifting) but getting paid to tweet companies is a pretty good way to earn some cash as a stay-at-home mom. And that is what you are, Kate, a STAY-AT-HOME mom. Oh dear, how mediocre that is!!

I think "Anne D" has to be male -- most females understand the angst we women go through over body image, weight issues and the like.

Further, while we women can be terribly hard on our own selves and our appearance, we usually are much more understanding of other women. I think most of us agree that beauty is more than skin deep, and a person who has a giving heart, a cheerful smile, and/or otherwise is enjoyable to be around -- is attractive!

Obviously I don't know if Lance Armstrong took performance enhancing drugs (PED) or not, but sure seems like the group that polices that sort of thing believes he did. I'm not sure why they can't say definitely one way or the other, because isn't it based on results of a chemical analysis?

Lance Armstrong does some good with his charity - so that's in his "plus" column. On the other hand, he dumped his wife after she stood by him through his cancer troubles, to run off with Sheryl Crow. That goes in his "minus" column. Add in these ongoing issues and rumors over possible drug use while participating in races, and I arrive at an overall greater negative perception of Armstrong than positive. That's just me.

I needed a good laugh after reading about Kate's greediness.

Here's my contribution to the Friday funnies:

My girlfriend Clementine goes on retreat once a year to the little sisters of unbearable chastity.

While she was there, she had a spiritual power- a power for healing. It wasn't long before the entire retreat was overrun by people seeking to be healed by Clementine.

One day Clementine was taking a shower, and there was a knock at the door. A large nun walks in. "Clementine, come out of the shower girl. There is a blind man outside to see you. He has something important to say to you."

Clementine said, "sister look at me. I'm wet and soapy. I can not recieve anyone in this condition." The sister said, "oh Clementine, be a sport. He's a blind man and he's come a long way. He has something important to say to you"

"Oh, very well, show him in", said Clementine.
The door opens, and in walks the blind man.
He looked at Clementine, and said,
"nice tits, where do you want the blinds?"

Did Kate grift a shipment of Popchips?
------------------------------------------------
Evidently. Here's my take on this. There is a shift in retail and advertising. The web is integral to the process. Amazon, as an example has eclipsed "big box" retailers in many markets. There is a similar shift occurring in advertising. Facebook and Twitter are two, of many, companies on the cutting edge of this shift. Firms are shifting some advertising streams to news ways of doing business.

Katie Irene attended a conference that addressed how to (insert term) profit/grift/get samples of items from retailers. What she is getting are product samples and/or hard cold cash allocated to whatever she has going...meaning a number of twitter "followers" and a blog.

Once companies figure out, for example, what Facebook LIKES mean and what #INSERT TWITTER NAME mean the advertising streams will normalize. Until then, it's beggars delight for Katie Irene.

There are many articles online about how to use twitter to make money, grift things, etc. There are websites that you can join which will HELP you grift by putting you in a pool for companies to choose from to "sponsor tweet". She just still continues to see twitter as a "job" for herself. That is probably her "paperwork" and her "lists".

Things may change some eventually as are popping up about declaring a tweet that a product is sponsored or grifted, tax implication, etc. But really social media is considered hands-off in that area, at least right now. That could change eventually.

Not a bad idea to make your own if you have a large family and the recipes weren't terribly difficult. However that huge expensive meat slicer is pretty over the top when an electric knife works just as well although not as fast.

She may be slicing big quantities and freezing it, but I've had frozen then thawed lunch meat and it's extremely watery and not flavorful.

Tuckers mom: usually, you buy a rump roast or roast(cook it) or boneless ham, or any unsliced meat , with no bone in it, cook them if raw and you can slice it. You can slice cheese, I've never tried bread. Mine is a compact meat slicer, it folds up. My old one looked like Kates, it was non-electric and it was white. I got my electric one at Marshal Fields, before it became Macys.

Tucker's Mom said...

I agree it's far, far healthier to make your own deli-cuts from your own roasts etc because deli meats are chock full of nitrates and salt.
It's still a luxury to have your own slicer.

AuntieAnn said...

Tucker's - I have an smaller electric slicer. I buy outside or inside round roasts. After the meat is roasted and cooled I slice it up for things like beef dip. Same with pork, turkey breasts, and ham (real ham, not the chopped and formed). Great for hot or cold sandwiches. I freeze family portions. It really is a lot less expensive than buying the packaged stuff. We had a manual commercial slicer from our restaurant and thinking it took up too much counter space, we sold it. We've kicked ourselves a hundred times over that decision.

What is wrong with her? Does she think that the non-fans are are ignorant as the sheeple and she can pull the wool over everyone's eyes?

I often do a big turkey breast in the crockpot, and when it's done, it's so tender that you can just pick it apart. The kids like hot turkey sandwiches, and whatever is left over from the turkey we use in cold sandwiches on kaiser (no pun) rolls!

Slicing roast beef and ham I understand. But a whole chicken? I hope she's deboning that bird very, very well before she slices and makes sandwiches.

fidosmommy - I wondered about that too. Most chickens aren't big enough to have leftovers for slicing. The breast meat is the best. Kate's chickens must wear really good bras.

Sassy Lassie, I read your post and I feel your frustration and everyone', but you have to realize the type of person Kate is. She is probably in a deep depression. She is at home (never was at home with the kids for the whole year) and no one is calling her, no one is responding to her tweets. Worse of all? She has no friends, no gal friends to spend a Friday night with or anyone to invite to her house, so she drinks alone, I am assuming of course, & twittering and listing all of her goodies which she knows makes you crazy, reading the list of everything she has. Stuff.

She is in her home area, born, raised, schooled, worked nearby and has no one to call and have a gal's night at her big Mansion? Does she still want everyone to believe she has the world in her hands?

Unless she gets some therapy and learns to reach out to her brother, her family, her long lost friends and ask them to be a part of her life again. Forget the TV show, forget whatever was said and just go forward. Not possible without therapy. I do know this. I don't think there is anyone who reads this that doesn't know about situational depression, but I fear Kate's is more than that. Situational? Where you put in for a job, don't get it. You are homeless, promised an apt., you don't get it (joking, but the same type) only if you are homeless and want an apt, you and your family work toward that.I do some work with people who need and are hoping and are disappointed and still they can move forward, not all, but most.

Kate doesn't know how to help herself and that sounds like her talking to Tony, but I really believe she doesn't. She reads this Blog and figures she will throw something out there so we will comment, as if jealous. Actually we are just pissed that she has so much, 8 beautiful children who are healthy and she needs to go back to sleep in the a.m. instead of taking her kids to the school bus?

Not exhaustion, depression.
Just my opinion and I seem to have a lot today.

Tomatoes, I knew your friend was sick, but I did not know she passed away. I am so very sorry for your loss. My dearest, oldest friend is fighting bladder cancer and it is very bad. She has no strength to go out and some nights she will just call and ask me to watch a TV show with her, we are far from each other, so I turn the TV on and we watch a show together, all the while laughing. There is nothing like hearing yourself laughing so hard and so deep that it is medicine to your body. Tomatoes you are in my thoughts.

Sassy Lassy: organic meat: means no drugs, animal by-products in food. Most are free range: meaning: they run free, not caged. They are fed, grain, nothing else. Though I find that hard to believe, with all the virus, and bacteria an animal can get, that theses are drug free. No shots for Rabies, huff & mouth, avian flu, mad cow, kennel cough or equal to etc. That they are that organic?

Is she a rich celebrity to be envied with having all of this material "stuff," or is she a poor struggling single parent who is financially strapped? She can't make up her mind.

Tamara, you have a beautiful name.

I do disagree about the children of Queen Eliz. I think she is very disappointed in them, but her hope is in all of her grandchildren, including Fergie's 2 daughters plus William, Catherine & Harry and Princess Anne's children. All of them are very outgoing. I give Princess Kudos for the Olympics when she won the Gold Medal, is that right? Many years ago, I also know she has brought her horses to the Devon Horse Show in Pa over the years. I think her daughter was in this year's Olympics in LHR, wasn't she?
Just my opinion.

I love this Blog and our freedom to discuss how we feel.

I just hate to say this but for a few years when I was born? My parents worked a farm for a doctor, until I was 6 yrs old. I loved the chickens. When I was learning to walk around, my Mom told me that I would imitate the chickens. She had to watch me like a Hawk! I thought that was funny until she told me that chickens love to eat their own poop.Even the organic ones do. So, sorry Kate but I do not think your chickens (and you have chickens unless you let Shoka have them) do anything differently.

The only reason I get my Meat Slicer out (which is part plastic but has a decent blade) is to cut a canned Ham for sandwiches which is very rare because hubby likes a fresh ham and I cook it until it falls apart in my crock pot and then put it in the oven surrounded by veggies. So no need to use the $49.99 meat slicer that sits on a shelf in the basement. What a buy that was from Bed Bath & Beyond years ago with a 20% discount. It works well on a Spiral Ham which my sister's family loves during the holidays, so I cut it on the slicer too. Otherwise, I don't use it, not even for a turkey. A good knife works wonders!

Why in the world would you buy a Deli type slicer that costs thousands? I guess it was given to you Kate. You would never have spent that money. Be careful Listeria. Bleach that sucker after you are done and before you wash it. Get those Q tips out to get all of that stainless steel clean, then use the alcohol on it too. Ugh.

Just my opinion Tamara.Hope you don't mind.
I know I sound like Kate on Boxed Wine, but I get up early, like 4:30 to 5 am and it was a long day but I love this Blog and love to read it and see what else Kate has grifted and read what she has said on twitter, thru this blog.

Scratching my head here (no, no lice, no lie). How does one "buy organically"? Is there a special outfit one wears? Gloves? I buy organic free range chicken - organic modifies the noun chicken. Organically modifies the verb in her tweet I can understand gardening organically, but buying? Please, someone, enlighten me.

The kids live on hummus (what is it with her and beans?)but also eat meat. She only eats fish/chicken. Since when is chicken NOT meat? Does she mean she doesn't eat red meat? But then there's pork...the "other white MEAT". She admonishes against "assuming" so should we assume she doesn't eat pork either? Am I being picky here? You betcha. In my house one never, ever "assumes" anything. Otherwise you end up with a bugle.

I know I write in the "stream of conciousness" style (not intentionally, as Faulkner did, it is more than apparent I ain't no Faulkner). But really, wth? Did she not say English was her BEST subject? She brags about writing books. I absolutely would hate to be her editor.

She bought a slicer to slice things paper thin. Slices one can see through. You know, part of her portion control issues. Deli counter folks hate doing that...says the woman who worked in her grandmother's 2-aisle delicatessen. We always sliced to order. Let me tell you, when it takes an hour to slice a quarter pound of hard salami so thin one thinks "what's the point?" one soon develops a tic when others mention deli meats. I could beat any takers in arm wrestling back in the day - all because of slicing. Made me quite the catch. A "new" bologna is quite a heavy booger. And head cheese...NOOOOO! Oh, and pimento loaf. Whose idea was it to stuff pimentos into ANYTHING anyway?

Hey Kate, eat sh*t and die. It's not a threat sheeple, nor do I wish she would actually die. Some people eat poop and live long lives. She seems to understand the language of a ten year old best. Some day she'll be singing:

Nobody likes me
Everybody hates me
I'm gonna eat some worms

I'm told worms are quite the organic things. Fish eat 'em, no?

Hope springs eternal.

anger issues kate said...

See, this is how stupid Kate is. That organic stuff, I have never heard of. So, they are gonna send Kate organic cleaning stuff to try that nobody ever heard of. I do hope Kate does research on this stuff before she commits to trying it. What stuff is in it? Anyone can be allergic to one or more organic stuff. That does not mean that just cause it's organic it is safe. It's like pine, I love the pine smell, but if I get too close to pine branches, I get a rash. It does not itch, just a fine dot rash. Other people sneeze. If it has orange in it, some people are allergic to oranges. We know Kate never researches anything, cause she is a nurse, and knows everything. I do hope she sends for info first.

A meat slicer is only cost effective if you buy, meat to cook, and then slice it, it is cost affordable if you are feeding the masses, and use it all the time. If there are just say less than 4 people in your house, a good sharp knife or electric craving knife works well(for those who like gadgets). A meat slicer is a novelty, and if you are a gadget person, it's to have. I'm surprised it took Kate 8-10 years to get one. She is slow.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

We had a lot of gadgets growing up and the problem is we're all the type of people where it's lots of fun in the beginning then you lose interest after it ends up being too much time and energy to haul them out, get them working, clean them, haul them back. This will probably be like everyone else in her life, used for awhile then discarded.

I have a few gadgets now I have to have I consider kitchen staples--a good blender, a good hand mixer, a good sandwich press, but beyond that I just don't see the need nor do I have the space.

anger issues kate said...

Actually, Kate probably needs a meat slicer. Have you seen how she cuts bread? Inch & half, slices. Can you imagine, the meat: oh, sorry what ever your name is, you get only pieces, cause your sister got a half an inch piece. Next time don't be slow. It is probably a control issue. This way everybody get the same thickness, and size. And Kate can count the slices. After all, they are twins and a 6-pk, they all must have the same. I can see her kids when they are on their own, they will eat what ever they want.

@Flight of the Kiwi 112: I share your frustration with both Kate’s [non]command of the English language, and with her misunderstanding of the word “organic.” Kate seems to think that “organic = healthy” – and that is just not always true. She doesn’t seem to understand that the term organic has to do with how the food was grown, produced, etc. The terms “organic” and “healthy” are not mutually exclusive, though – but in her mind they seem to be one in the same. Organic ice cream still contains FAT and SUGAR . Organic chips still contain sodium and fat. Organic cheese still contains fat. The organic eggs that her chickens are popping out have just as much cholesterol as any store-bought, non-organic egg. Throwing the word “organic” on the packaging does not mean the food is necessarily good for you, it just means it was produced with fewer chemicals, pesticides, etc. Her ignorance just knows no bounds.

As for deli work, it was the mortadella that challenged my biceps (as well as my gag reflex – really, WHO eats that nastiness???).

She wants to keep the kids "organically" thin. God help any "fat" Gosselin child and feeds them like they are in a concentration camp, to save money for more important things.

I was not from a rich family growing up, but my mother always made sure we had a full belly before we went to bed with a balance of nutritional foods. Family style helpings. We were not pigs as kids, because 8-9 people needed to eat, but that is how you learn self-control.

They do seem to share the same kind of warped sense of self. The day Martha Stewart got out of jail, a reporter asked her what did she miss the most during her jail time. Her answer? "Lemons..." Followed by a looong pause, and then: "Oh. And my family."

Yes, I completely agree. I stopped cooking on "teflon" a few years ago. Cast iron heats very evenly, and if you have trouble with anemia, it helps to keep your hemoglobin in good shape, too! I'm a vegetarian, and I have no trouble with low iron. I have become more and more suspicious of modern cooking items like plastic, teflon, the microwave, etc. and I believe that if it's good enough for grandma, it's good enough for me. Oh, and I use vinegar a lot, too!

So Kate expects a 'gift' every time she does something 'nice' for someone? Um, that is not how a good deed or charity work is done that way, Kate! It sounds more like a business transcation, something along the lines of 'you rub my back & I'll rub yours'. I'll tweet your company's name and I get your product free! Really, all she has to is tweet it, that's it. Unbelievable!

I have to tell you lovely, money saving ladies my score of the day. My 35th HS reunion is tomorrow night (can't wait!) and I've been on the hunt for a classic pair of silver heels to wear with my outfit. Went into Macy's today and found that all the shoes on the markdown shoe rack were 75% off the original price. I found a gorgeous pair of Michael Kors peep-toe, soft silver colored, textured leather heels, regular price $140 for $35. I was doing the Collin Gosselin happy dance in the middle of the shoe department. Fun times.

************************************************

Excellent purchase, capecodmama!

Those shoes were meant for you.

Enjoy your reunion :o)

That's interesting about the person who works with Martha. But I have to tell you I heard "it is what it is" or "they are who they are" a LOT from people working with or around the narcissist I know.

I call these people apologists.

@XXXXXXXX clearly you have no clue what things cost or how to save money. I feel bad for you :(
--------------------------------------------------
What is this, 'The Price is Right'?

We know the cost of everything in Katie's world. We know how much her first mortgage was. We know how much the refinance was. We know the name of the trust on the first mortgage. We know how much support her ex was originally paying. We know his support number now. We know where her kids go to school and what the tuition is. We know what cars she owns and by proxy what they cost. I could go on but the point is that we know.

We damn sure know how much a pound of Virginia baked ham and a half pound of Cooper sharp cost.

We also know what Katie doesn't know. The cost of a kid sitting with the same lunch every day who isn't part of the group buying from the cafeteria when mommy can afford it.

@huunterAlain when someone does something nice, it's nice to send a gift! I received a thank you gift. Try to c things objectively someXs :)

This comment reminded me of that time on their show when Kate was talking about giving someone a gift card. And then magically that same day someone gave them a gift card for the same amount. I remember how that bothered me then and this bothers me. Since when do you send someone a gift for giving you a thank you gift? What's next you send a thank you gift for the thank you gifts thank you gift? Only in Kate's world would this make any sense. Plus I would not accept a gift for my thank you gift. Now have I totally lost you with all that grifting? I mean gifting?

The person I know who works for Martha may, indeed, be an apologist. My acquaintance is a very driven person and my guess is that she is tolerating Martha to further her career. And she has done that in spades.

This is part of Kate keeping score. You gave me this and I in turn then gave you that. How she values what may be vastly different than how we do (for instance, for someone sending her free bikes she might think a signed photo of them or a tweet is equal in worth to that) but that's how she sees it.

Kate's County - Was he a collector too?

When I was single and in my first apartment I started out with a coffee pot and a toaster and a few pots and pans that I scored from an auction.

I think my obsession with kitchen utensils and gadgets was influenced by Julia Child. I loved her and her kitchen. It was incredible. She even donated it to the Smithsonian.

I thought for a hot minute that Kate was making videos of the kids to solicit these various freebies. Glad to hear no kids were exploited in the making of the PopChip video.

The struggling mother bought a meat slicer? Sigh. It will take about a year to recoup the cost of that purchase. She's such a tool. This is something she could have picked up (assuming she bought it and it wasn't grifted) at the Restaurant Store, along with her money saving (not) disposable coffee and souffle cups. The price range was $329.00 to $729.00 online.

I have a few pieces of cast iron, only thing to make cornbread in, imo.
My cookware of choice is not @kitchenaid,(lol), but Wagner-ware Magnalite. I have a few pieces of my great grandmother's and my grandmother. My grandmother also gifted me with a set for Christmas in the 80's, it's still going strong.
the new magnalite classic is made in China now, it's not worth feeding the dog in.

I received my kitchenaid knife butcher block set on Christmas from my mom. I had it for a week or so, was in a hurry, and you guessed it, cut off a good chunk of my finger...a quick trip to the dr, numerous stitches to shape what was left into a finger and a bottle of hydrocone later, I was in really good shape, lol. My mother's answer was to threaten to throw the knife set in the trash. Dr said to wrap finger for 6 freakin months, I stood it for 4. Omg that hurt, lololololol.
(later on, a cutco guy came over and humiliated my knife set. talk about adding insult to injury!)
anyone want to gift me a new 7t white @kitchenaid mixer?????

GN! lol

"McMahon, the ever-loyal "Tonight Show" second banana who died Tuesday at 86, honed his ability to draw attention merely by raising his voice during long summer hours spent selling kitchen gadgets from a small booth on the Atlantic City Boardwalk at Pennsylvania Avenue.

He was a pitchman, and a very good one," said Ed Hurst, of Margate, whose friendship with McMahon went back to a time when they were both young men earning a living on the Boardwalk. "He was tall and self-assured and believed in the product he was pitching."

Does anyone honestly believe that on some days she doesn't just say f-it

================================================
Oh, I think she says that multiple times a day about everything...running, cooking, paying attention to the kids, and on and on and on. Then retires to her bedroom.

Griftopia - another deli-ite! Yay! Ick on the mortedella - I mean, really, what could be better than bologna with chunks of lard with a slice of head cheese. Mm good!

Cast iron skillet - so many uses. We have 3 (in different sizes). Makes a wonderful weapon (don't ask).

A wonderful meal for Kate would be making a can of spam according to the "serving suggestion" picture on the can. Stud the loaf with whole cloves and place pineapple slices (well, really, one slice barely fit) with a maraschino cherry. Run under the broiler. We did that once. Took a picture of the finished product - ended up the size of a little plastic turkey on a plate in a dollhouse (the spam, not the picture) I'm sure Kate can get, oh, at least, 12 servings out of it. It barely served one here.

Kitchen gadgets - yes! Yogurt maker (never used - can't give it away, not even goodwill will take it), Mr. Coffee Frappacino Machine, turkey fryer (oh, do I have stories about THAT particular, uh, appliance) and 2 1950's GE Roasters - one on a stand (thanks Gram and Mom) those babies come in handy when it's our turn to host the whole family Thanksgiving dinner...not to mention it helps to be able to feed the fire department after the turkey fryer goes awry. Probably my favorite gadget is our fire extinguisher. Gadgets ROCK!

lol! Actually, it is maroon. School colors are maroon and gray. Dress code for lower school refers to "maroon." The reason Mady and Cara are not in maroon shirts is that they must wear white shirts. Maroon is for lower school kids only. I'm surprised Kate didn't insist that all of the lower school kids wear maroon. It's so much easier to keep clean.

Ouch! I chopped off the tip of mine on a lawn mower (don't ask). The needle in the finger to numb it before the stitches was more painful than childbirth. I did it again on another finger, only that time with a knife. Fearing what was ahead of me in the emergency room, I decided to pull the finger together and fix it myself. Turns out it healed better (and looks better) than the one on which the doctor used his primitive sculpting abilities.

Another one I have always been tempted to try just for fun is Annie Wilkes's (Misery) recipe for her special meatloaf. The 'secret' ingredient was a can of Spam mixed into it. Auntie Anne you are inspector gadget! I love it.

I do like gadgets and what they can do it just doesn't suit my lifestyle right now. And while a gadget can save time and make things easier or elevate something I don't see many gadget people going on about how it saves them money like idiot Kate does.

She would have to tell us the price of the deli slicer, followed by the price of getting deli cuts from the deli minus the price of buying the meat to cook yourself. The amount saved each time I'm guessing is a few pennies a slice.
I'd like to see someone figure out exactly how many slices of turkey you need to cut before you even break even.
