Kate on local radio show Jackie and Scott

Listen to the full interview here. Kate dishes about the Chicago marathon and other upcoming running events, how eight kids are not allowed to each have their own schedule and have to stay shut away in their rooms in the morning with a video, how she's tapping out some books on her iPhone, and finally this guy .....

... her police escort to the station this morning! Currently on the Y102 roof with a sniper rifle.

Why can't the kids just GET UP when they wake up like normal people? They're not infants anymore.

Also if they're waking up so darn early, maybe they are going to bed too early. Or maybe SHE is going to bed too late if she's not waking up when they do.

For a family that is so militant about sticking to the schedule, shouldn't they all but sleeping on the same schedule too?

Has she sunk so low that she now has to resort to help from Officer Jim taking a break from his donuts and coffee instead of Steve the official-ish presidential bodyguard?

Also Wayward I don't think any criminals are up at this hour. I think she's fine.

She needs a police escort and tight security to go to a local radio station? Anyone who wants to go after her just needs to go hang out at the Giant or Target and wait for her to show up. I guess per "protection" makes her feel like a star. Love how she insists that she belongs in the media. Too bad nobody in the media agrees with her.

Kate's CC blog is now fixed. Here is the entire post:

Summertime is, without a doubt, a busy time but it is generally a sun-filled-relaxing-sleep-in-every-day-no-schedule time of year, which is exactly why my kids need some learning reinforcement.

Since my six youngest started school, I have faithfully required summer school work to keep their skills sharp for the next school year.

Early on, I thought I was among the very few mommies who required such daily “I hate it” work (as my kids say) but in recent years I’ve realized that not only are there many moms who share my feelings on summer education, there are also many programs available to achieve that goal.

I’m always looking for a fun, easy, inexpensive and painless (for all) program that packs the learning in a quick punch each day so that we can zip through our work and dive into the pool! Therefore, I don’t follow the same program each year.

In years past, I have Googled curriculums online and printed them out and photocopied each page SIX times (including one for myself). This year, I learned of a program our school recommended and, in an effort to save, I bought one math workbook and one language arts book and photocopied them six times. Using single subject three ring binders in six different colors, I made my own summer workbook for each child. In future years, I’ll re-use the binders to further cut costs.

I am also, for the first year, requiring my two older girls to do the recommended math workbook by summer’s end. “It’s only fair,” I tell them! : )

So, the schedule at our house is: sleep in, breakfast, summer work (one math lesson and one language arts lesson three to four mornings a week) then pool time!

After doing some research, I’ve discovered that there are many ways to approach summer learning. There are paper curriculums like I use, but there are also online programs and many times, local programs that kids can attend. If nothing else, requiring 20 minutes of reading a day will keep skills sharpened for your young readers.

If I doubted I was on the right track, last year when my kids returned to school in the fall, their reading and math levels actually increased instead of decreased, which was an unusual but very exciting result. That was just the confirmation I needed to continue our summer enrichment at home.

Check out some great offers below to keep your kids learning all summer. Happy summer (school work) all!

XO

Bringing this post over from the last thread.

I'm finding it kind of amusing that this news story is on the website of the radio station where Kate had her interview today. Taken from a page of Kate's Grifting 101 book.

http://www.y102reading.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=104668&article=10270642

Sad that people think others should help pay for what they can't afford and sad that this young woman thinks this is worthy of someone donating the money they work for to her cause. Admin, I could see an entire grifting thread being made from this.

This is copyright infringement.

Not to mention it is probably cheaper just to buy six books then pay for photocopying and additional binders.

I had to quit listening. Her "on air" skills have not improved at all it grates on my nerves and eardrums to listen to her. If she was serious about having a career she'd hire a voice coach to help her lose her regional accent, nasal intonations, and the overuse of the word "Honestly".

Re her CC post..."This year, I learned of a program our school recommended and, in an effort to save, I bought one math workbook and one language arts book and photocopied them six times."

Isn't it against copyright laws? Funny how no one can use her name (a la Em Tanner) without her being compensated, but she can pay for one workbook and make copies thus paying for one rather than six workbooks and that's not a problem. What would she think of someone making copies of her books and distributing them? Same difference.

So tell me....just exactly how do you layout a book on an iphone?

Or is this just a case of Kate writing down some random ideas, in short fragments, and the the real writer re-writing it into complete sentences and doing the photos, graphics, etc.

How do you do a layout on an iphone anyway? I don't see how you'd be moving photos around, or adding photos to existing text.

Lies, Kate. All lies.

Just stuff you *wish* you had a contract for, not anything you're actually doing.

Could this be the guy Berks said that Kate hinted, about future dating? If he is the same one Kate has been e-mailing?

As for learning during the summer Kate does read this blog. Just this past week, we were all talking about where kids can go for classes, camp etc, Kate mentioned this in that CC blog. All of us have been for months, and a few years, that Kate should be doing things local, now she wants to do things local. Kate, too little too late. The people in your area, can't stand you, don't expect them to embrace you, and treat you like the star you still think you are.

WHAT! no purseboy! Did he finely quit! Come to his senses? Or did Kate dump him for this cop? Maybe he charges less. Kate does see the opportunities having a BF being a cop, free escorts, fix tickets, hold her hand and get some whoopie, you know friend with benifits.

As most of us have said: Kate treats the kids as a set, 6 pk, 2 pk, unit, team, never as individuals. They either all do the same activity or they do nothing. Where I volunteer, at the park, we have some kids, who would rather, play in the sand box, than make paper, or look in a microscope, or touch a snake. Kids just being kids(individuals). Not being forced to stay in their room till everybody is awake. THAT IS A LAZY MOTHER! The kids can only come out of their rooms,in the morning, when Kate is ready to deal with them.

FL Mama said...

Didn't she say in one of her interviews where they asked her about dating that she wanted someone to act like a policeman or something like that? Someone to tell the kids "Do what your Mother said!" Is this Officer Jim the man of her dreams?

Brought over from last thread re: schedules and lies!

The kids used to have different schedules- on the show anyhow! I remember various times they said Hannah, Cara and Collin were late sleepers and they were allowed to remain asleep unless they were going somewhere. Hannah had migraines so was left alone. Cara just slept while the others played outside with Jon- no video required. Another time Kate 'twit-pic-ed' her paper plates of waffles I think and one was empty as Cara was sleeping in. And what about her sessions of fun with just the twins? And her two bus runs? Tups at friends? Cara at lax? Shopping with just M and C? Boys' chores? Music lessons?

I can see a schedule for meals that could be flexible- save and re-heat, and bedtime, school routine etc, but she is not really telling the truth. No way do they all go by the same schedule as they grow older.

She said they 'required' the new big house so the could 'disperse' and do what they wanted rather than cluster around her !

************
Yes, you are correct and I was going to post the same thing myself. Workbooks, in particular, are not supposed to be copied, and they are called "consumables". Consumables are copyright protected and usually say on each individual sheet that photocopying is prohibited. Busted again, Kate.

I don't have any problem with her giving summer work. It is very helpful, but I am not a fan of worksheets in general. The kids would be much more amenable to the practice if she would make it an authentic experience. This is how kids learn best.

She could have the kids follow a simple recipe to sharpen their reading and math skills. Then, they could write their own recipes for functional writing experience. There are also many resources out there for hands-on science activities, which all students love.

I guarantee they would beg for "summer work" time if she did these things, but we're talking about Kate, here. The best teachers use these techniques, but they are a lot of extra work to plan, prep, and implement. So to quote Admin's hilarious booby guard parody, "That shit ain't gonna happen!"

Fair Use copyright laws are at once restrictive and vague. I like this homeschool mom's explanation, as it points to specific laws, but also includes an ethics question:

http://sunniemomsblog.wordpress.com/2012/04/14/homeschooling-copyright-law-and-fair-use/

“What will my kids learn about honor and integrity by seeing me take the time to respect copyright law and the intellectual property of others?” We live in a world where movies and music are pirated almost as a matter of course- files are traded, photos ripped, with nary a thought to the fact that, without permission, use of many of these materials is stealing. Our kids are learning from our example how to be honest and without reproach in their daily lives. While you are doing the numbers in your homeschool budget this year, ask yourself how much that is worth.

She also said that some people
Hate running, some people love running and some people like it when you are at the end of a run". In other words hate running but like it when it ends and she said that describes her!! So?! How does she turn around and say she wants to have a show or job about running because "that's her passion" when she JUST said she hates to do it but loves it when it's done. What a moron! She just admitted that it's not the running she loves, it's the RESULTS of being skinny that she loves and passionate runners don't care about that...it's the RUNNING so what can she offer people who truly love the sport! She just can't help lying, can she? She's been home (except for the occasional race and the Australia trip) for an entire year. She does not do anything during the day, and we all know it. The nanny takes care of the kids and the rest of the hired help maintains the house, in and out.

KK's demanding/requiring a police escort to the radio station isn't a first. Wasn't there a story that she demanded police escorts when they were in Tenn. for the food bank episode, even tho there were no locals around to gawk/bother/admire/worship her? What an ego!

When I was looking up pictures of Kate's most classic and tasteful outfits, the changes in her face from picture to picture were quite obvious. She seems to defintely have had something done with her chin. Maybe not an implant, but maybe a little lipo underneath.

And as far as that saggy good bra, I think even she realized no one was buying into that one. She appears to have gone with a small D at first, then when no one believed her denials about the boob job, it looks like she had them reduced. By that time the skin had stretched to accomodate the Ds. I don't know how that works, if they remove saline or silicone or just put in new smaller implants... regardless, now she's left with more skin than boob. Leaving her with that oh-so-attractive skin runneth out look when she wears her prom gown to the rare red carpet she gets to walk on.

I don't see my post questioning copyright issues, but here is a cut/paste of what I am basing my questions on...

STANDARDS FOR DETERMINING FAIR USE

The Fair Use Provision of the Copyrights Act of 1976 is found in Section 107 United States Code 17, and is intended to balance the interests of copyright owners with the needs of others who need access to copyrighted material. There are four general factors to be considered when evaluating whether material can be considered to be "Fair Use", and four "other factors" which have been the subject of court cases:

FOUR MAIN FACTORS

PURPOSE AND CHARACTER OF THE USE
Is the use for nonprofit, educational, or commercial use? Be aware that several courts have held that absence of financial gain is insufficient for a finding of fair use.

NATURE OF THE COPYRIGHTED WORK
Is the work creative or informational? Special consideration is given to the distinction between the two. Duplication of materials originally developed for classroom use (creative) is less likely to be fair use than the duplication of materials prepared for public consumption.

If you copy a workbook page or a chapter from a textbook you are more directly depriving the copyright holder of profits more directly than if you are copying a page from the newspaper.

AMOUNT, SUBSTANTIALITY, OR PORTION TO BE USED IN RELATION TO THE COPYRIGHTED WORK AS A WHOLE
What is the amount and significance of the portion copied?

EFFECT OF USE ON THE POTENTIAL MARKET
Probably the most important of the standards. If the copying of the copyrighted material reduces the potential market and therefore the potential sales and profit, that use is unlikely to be found a fair use.

******************

Law aside, Kate seems to hold others to a different standard than she requires of herself.

As to the question of educational workbooks, I have been required to purchase workbooks for my children for use in the school classroom, so I would not think they would be exempt from copyright laws.

Once a Viewer said...

Kate sure has a face for radio!

For those asking about Gosselinbook, the issue has always been 'right of privacy' which means you can't publish a book about a person because that is making money off their image, and they own that right. So he would first have to get Kate's consent, and if this was meant to be a mud slinging dirt revealing tell all, good luck. But, usually what happens is the celebrity needs the cash, so they agree to let their ex lover or nanny publish and split the proceeds with them. My guess is this book wasn't salacious enough or well written enough to make money, hence it is not getting published.

And as for making money in publishing, it is very difficult. Author friends of mine can't afford mortgages or car payments or vacations. Even the highly successful ones like Ami Mackay aren't rich. And most common, the advance given barely covers the expenses, I know friends who came out of a book deal poorer for their efforts. Kate didn't have millions tucked away, she had tens of thousands adding up to under $300,000, and I believe her when she says there isn't enough put aside to cover tuition for 8 children.

capecodmama said...

I do like the dress but the cut of the top is definitely too low. If it was just showing a hint of cleavage instead of the whole boob it would be better. But we know Kate likes to attract attention with what she wears. And her hair is horrific. The color is all wrong and nobody looks good with their hair severely pulled back like that. She has layers so she should have kept some hair out framing her face. She certainly shows that she has no idea how to style her hair. You would have thought that Jason would have given her a lesson in styling. All I know is that my lowly ole hairdresser here on the Cape is worth the $70. she charges to color my hair. Also, is it me or is Kate's hairline receding?

Examiner.com has this posted:
(just like I said, publicity for Kate)

Former reality TV star Kate Gosselin, who recently completed her first full marathon, will run a 5K race in Grings Mill, Pa., this fall to benefit the Special Olympics.

In a radio interview with Y102 (Reading, Pa.) hosts Scott St. John and Jackie Hoffman on July 16, 2012, Gosselin revealed she has a stacked schedule in the coming months.

"I do a lot of different runs, and what better run to do than a local one that benefits a great cause?" Kate said of the Y102 'Yes I Can' 5K, which takes place in Grings Mill, Pa., on Sept. 8.

Gosselin, who set a personal best time at the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll half-marathon last month, says anyone can become a runner if they try.

The mom of eight, who had never worked out regularly until 2006, is in the best shape of her life now, thanks to daily runs and strength-training.

When she started, Kate, 37, couldn't run for more than five minutes at a time. She slowly built up her stamina and speed, working up to an hour daily on the treadmill, and then began running outdoors in June 2010.

"I believe in pushing yourself, pushing your goals, pushing what you think is possible," says Gosselin. "People need to give themselves a chance and really put forth the effort.

"Honestly, I never set out to encourage people directly (to run), but I just started tweeting and blogging about my experiences, and I think it's given people--especially moms and women--the encouragement they needed."

Kate never imagined she'd be able to cover the distances she now does, and underscored that anyone can become fit if they're committed.

"Nobody's born a runner," she says. "You walk, you run for two minutes...you build up slowly and then you realize, 'Oh my gosh, I did it!' "

These days, Gosselin sometimes runs with her kids, some of whom have become running enthusiasts because of her daily regimen.

"Any parent that's a runner, you wind up with a few [kids] that are interested in it," says Kate. "I'm very into nutrition and fitness, so the kids and I started running together. They are very encouraging to me. They used to ask me when they got off the school bus, 'How many miles did you run?' It really helps to have a group of people encouraging you."

While Gosselin wouldn't reveal exactly which races she'll participate in this fall (could the NYC Marathon be in the cards?), she has a full schedule ahead, including a full marathon, a 1/2 marathon and a 10k race, all within a four-week period.

"If you make the time to exercise or run, it is possible (to get in shape)," she says. "People shouldn't give up on themselves."

Kate said.."So, the schedule at our house is: sleep in, breakfast, summer work (one math lesson and one language arts lesson three to four mornings a week) then pool time!"
.....What a boring summer schedule for those kids! We spent two wonderful months at our cottage where every day was fun...even doing nothing except lying in the tall grass and daydreaming. Add to the mix blueberry-picking excursions with the other kids and our dads; boat trips down the lake; hikes in the woods; making forts; campfires and singalongs...the list goes on. Lots to feed our imaginations!Much of it unstructured. Spontaneity is the spice of life, Kate! Your kids will excel even more if you set them free to be kids!

So her big savings tip in the CC blog entry this week was to buy one workbook and make copies? That was it??

The rest of it seems to be nothing more than a written webisode about the kids...which CC is paying her for, rather than doing it on her on website. Work it, Kate.

And she looks like crap.

I saw this posted on ROL re the Katie Holmes-Tom Cruise divorce.

"There are provisions and clauses about which parent Suri will spend Thanksgiving, Christmas and her birthdays with. One of the most important clauses of the settlement is that NEITHER parent can talk negatively about the other in front of Suri and this includes anything about each parent's respective religion.

"This was a crucial part of the custody agreement and something that both Tom and Katie wanted included. The custody settlement essentially puts both parents on notice that their personal feelings about each other can't influence or harm Suri in any way and puts her needs first."

It's nice to see that some parents actually think of their children before themselves.

Can someone help me out here O.K. she is running "to benifit the Special Olympics"; does this fine organization "benefit" because she is running (calling attention to the cause) or does she have people who support her run by pledging $$ for each km? Has she pledged a donation herself or does she consider her time spent promoting herself as a donation?

What a load of mindless drivel. It was painful listening to her repeat herself as someone who belongs on television. She is not interesting, nor is she relevant, sincere, or mature. She is so done.

I believe she lied outright about her kids doing the 10 week pre-training prior to the run in Litchfield. Those children had no clue why they were there that weekend other than they were ordered to go (and run) by their fame-seeking mother.

Why ANYONE gives Kate an audience is beyond me, she is only there to promote herself no matter the cause.

Okay, all you runners out there. Is it wise to do a full marathon, a-half marathon and a 10K all in a four week period? How does your body recover in between races? Especially a body that does not get the proper nutrition.

Kate claims that she's all about fitness and nutrition with herself and her kids. Really. My husband and I have always lived a healthy lifestyle. Proper nutrition, plenty of exercise, plenty of sleep and plenty of water. We do indulge in but in moderation. We raised our daughters like that as well so they have never had body issues or weight issues. We never ate anything that our girls were not allowed to have and they didn't eat anything that we didn't eat. We all ate the same meals from the time they started eating regular food. Kate doesn't eat the same dinners as her kids. If she is not going to eat it, why would she feed it to her kids. I fear she may have some kids that have body issues with themselves because they aren't living up to the unrealistic standard that their mother is setting.

Maybe it's just me, but her structured summer learning program bothers me. I have 2 grandkids who are of school age. During the summer(and all year round), they visit the library and take out books to read, but there is no structured lessons. Math problems come up in the course of a casual conversation. For example, my birthday is next month and they wanted to know how old I was going to be. I gave them clues as to the year I was born, etc. but let them figure it out. Making them sit down and do actual "homework" seems too harsh to me-when daily life and conversation can provide so many scenarios for learning math and other subjects.

To me, it justs seems like another way Kate avoids doing anything WITH her children. It's just easier for her to give them printed out lessons. You can almost make any conversation into a math or English learning lesson-yet Kate has to do it "by the book".

How in the world did I ever manage to sit through that...I am about ready to pull my hair out!

Haven't read any comments yet, but I have to start with this:

Kate had her own reality show for umpteen years, has been on ET a number of times, has been interviewed how many times, and yet she can't even modulate her own voice using a speaker on the radio...constantly fading in and out, almost to a whisper sometimes..it was exhausting.

Her contradictions continue: "I'm not much of a reader" to "I'm all about reading." (And I am paraphrasing the first one because I'm not going back through this tripe again.)

And then the blatant, arrogant grifting for a permanent spot on the radio show, which reminds me of the time she took the mic from the ET guy and said, "I'm going to own this mic one of these days."

If I were Jewish, I would simply say OY. She is INSUFFERABLE.

I agree about summer academics. They should be fun. Sometimes a child may need specific help in a subject but most schools only require summer reading as far as I know. However, there are many 'fun' ways to learn about various subjects, starting with programs offered by the schools, and the library, among many other options. Kate's kids 'excel across the board' so she should give them a break or a fun class or two to attend.

Judy K: Idk- the use of 'require' at least twice makes me think it's her very own, or a good impersonator ! Who knows. If using a ghost writer, why not a better one?

Those kids spend nine VERY long months going to school. If she wants them to have extra enrichment over the summer, make it fun for God's sake. No wonder they hate the summer work. I agree, and the other teachers who read here probably do, too. Hands on learning is the best, of course. But that would require Kate to interact with her kids, discuss and moderate the experiences, and actually plan the cooking and science activities.

I have a problem with Kate posting a blog giving educational advice (while bragging about copyright infringement) and representing herself as someone who is qualified to do so. The woman does not even hold an AA degree.

Then she used to walk up and down the main road from her house all evening just to get catcalls from guys in passing cars. I am wondering if she hired him off duty, since RatClaws wasnt available to make a splashy scene for her. She does like to make an entrance.

Where I live, off duty police officers get a great deal of work as private security for one time things.

So the radio station felt the need to announce that 'security was tight'? What am i missing here? Why? How many people did Kate hire to take Stevie's place today? Was it to create an aura for herself or is she really that hated? An Amish gang wielding farm implements at her? Hard working folks taking a morning off work just to throw their garden produce at her? 2 bored 13 year olds squealing for an autograph while a dad waited in the car? Other than 'creating a panic in the streets' what did she HOPE was going to happen?

Here's a wonderful summer learning experience that a lady in my office does w/her grandkids.

Each summer they decide on a place to visit. Last year it was Fort Clatsop. First the kids go to the library and read about the Fort. Then they prepare questions to ask the park ranger while they are there. When they get back home they have to write a 1-3 paragraph (depending on their ages) about the Fort. How hard is that? All it takes is parental involvement and a fun activity. The grand kids look forward to their summer fun with the grandparents.

I agree with the post above that summer learning doesn't have to be about workbooks. Learning is everywhere.

And in learning "one size does not fit all". Educators in blogland can attest to that statement. Not every kid needs to do the same activity.

To the average/mediocre parent we get it. To Kate, not so much. You see, this type of learning is FOR THE CHILDREN, not for Kate.

On second thought, maybe the children can learn their times tables by multiplying how many times Mommy gets her hair done times the cost. Or count the number of shoes Mommy has times the average cost (say $100/each). See learning is everywhere.

Kate and her kids actually actually watch old episodes of Jon & Kate Plus 8, RadarOnline.com reported

These days, the relaity diva’s popularity plummeted to nowheresville – so much so that a cruise featuring the opportunity to hang out Kate was canceled in May because of lack of interest.

Yes, I can't see how they could stay focused on school work/activities when their heads were elsewhere. Not only did filming keep them pre-occupied, they have to contend with their nutjob of a mother - which would take up a lot of headspace.

The whole day does not require her to be "hands on" which will allow her to keep the pink phone in them in case that big call for the next tv gig comes in or a text from skeevo saying how much he misses carrying her purse or that he is jellus of Mr. Policeman escorting her to her local radio gig where she was "co-hosting" ( she was NOT a guest..snark)

Decided to listen to part 2. She ends her statements with her voice going up, like the band camp girl in American Pie. Very juvenile way to speak. She also said she and the kids prepared for the Rod Dixon Kids Marathon at home in their driveway. That kind of defeats the purpose of kids starting out with strangers and bonding for the final mile run, IMO. No wonder some of the kids were unhappy that day. She said that some kids like running and others do not, so what did she jam it down their throats?

Her excuse for the rent-a-cop....she is "directionally challenged". Bullsh*t.

fidosmommy, I hadn't heard that the school required workbooks to be done during the summer vacation, but I am not a local.

Where I live, the schools always recommended things for the kids and library programs parents could get them involved in, but it wasn't mandatory. Some of the things we enrolled our daughter in, and some we didn't.

Either way, we made sure she had summer time with activities she liked (softball and swimming), and time with friends, and spending a weekend with relatives she was really close to. She also had time to herself to just chill, relax, and read if she wanted to. We always tried to make summer well-rounded for her. Did that last sentence make sense?!

I can't stand busywork for kids. There's just so much they could learn in their environment during the summer without being chained to a desk. They spend so much of the year at a desk why not incorporate learning into fun? A fraction lesson when you cook, a history lesson when you stop at a local civil war site, an English lesson as you read together on a picnic.

She could join School Express and print out all kinds of fun stuff for kids to do for free. Word searches and nice little stories to read including math pages. She would not have to pay out for that first notebook. They are just the right age too. They also (either they or another) have online games that they can play while they learn what with all those tablets and lap taps she was trying to get would be put to good use for them and fun too. I learned about all these places when I homeschooled in the third grade. Little science projects like going outside and identifying plants with defenses were fun and my child learned a lot. I also taught him to type (which is good to know these days even that young) with typing software that was like a game. He is a really fast typist now. Opened up a whole new world for him. Buying one notebook and making copies and binders is a lot of work for someone. Who gets the prized nice first notebook? I guess the teachers M&C. I always liked to see my child sitting at the computer, because I know how invaluable that experience is these days.

I agree, Admin, there is so much you can teach kids in the summer without keeping them inside doing schoolwork.

With our daughter and our grandsons, they always help in the garden. Papa would teach them about planting the seeds, watering, what the plants needed to grow. They would get to pick them and then I took over and showed them how to clean them and explained why they had to be washed good. I would also give them different options as to how the veggies could be cooked. Sometimes, the kids just wanted certain fresh veggies raw with ranch salad dressing.

Other times it was taking them to the park for excercise, or on nature walks, or going to a museum and then buying them lunch afterwards. They were learning, but in more of a hands on way. I'm still amazed when they step into our garden and they remember what we taught them a few months before about growing the food.

Their little minds are like sponges and it it's hands on, those sponges tend to soak up more.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

This emphasis on chaining kids to homework all the time is going to burn our kids out and cause them to hate school. As Kate even admits, they hate it. Sorry, I don't mean to hog the blog tonight, but another thing regarding my daughter when she was younger and my grandkids.

My daughter loved making stuff so there was always plenty of craft items for her to put together. She also loved the find a word puzzles so I always had them on hand.

My older grandson loves to use his brain. He loves putting puzzles together so I have a number of the larger floor puzzles with 40-50 pieces for him to put together. He also likes the puzzle workbooks where there is a start and a finish and you have to find your way to the end. Sorry, I don't remembe what they are called.

As for my younger grandson, he's very active. He wants to play kickball, throw frisbee. dig for bugs, etc. He likes the puzzles, but he gets bored after awhile and wants to move.

That's what I never understood about Kate when she was in NY and went to FAO Schwartz shortly after her and Jon split up. She needed a personal shopper to help her pick out things for the kids. How could she not know what interests each of her kids had? What they likes?

I only see my grandsons for a few days every couple months, but we know what they like and what their interests are. How could she not know that about her own children?

Okay, I already know the answer to that. She is a very uninvolved parent.

Yep, poor old Kate can't use her iPhone to find directions apparently, nor negotiate an airport and grab a cab when she travels. If she doesn't want to eat dinner alone, there's always room service. lol, Tamara! I was going to ask the same thing. We NEVER did homework, summer reading or anything that remotely suggested school work over the summer. Summer vacation was just that -- vacation from school! It's amazing that, when we went back to school in the fall, we didn't forget how to read, nor did we forget how to do math. Not being educated in the summer didn't stop me from graduating from a private college prep school, nor from earning two undergraduate degrees (double major), a master's degree, and one graduate degree from a very competitive university!

While this wasn't yesterday, it wasn't back in the stone age, either!

Summer I agree with you and Tamara and everyone concerned about summer homework. When WAS it decided that information will leak if you don't do homework during the summer? Are there actual studies on this besides Kate's anecdotal evidence that probably has more to do with not filming and feeling more stable about custody than anything else.

Did Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg or do summer homework? The other smartest guys in the room? Doubt it. I see nothing wrong with incorporating FUN learning into what you are doing already, I see nothing wrong with doing summer reading provided it's things the child wants to read. But worksheets and other busy works I don't find useful or productive, and in fact, I think they're a drag on kids.

This is not how an adult learns. An adult learns by reading, listening, watching, and doing. A garden is a perfect example loveMyGrandsons brought up. Start a garden together. Pick out a few vegetables together, check out a few books and read a few online articles about how to start a garden. Read about photosynthesis and the science behind it all. And work on this project together over the summer.

You know what, last month I took a two and a half week vacation and traveled abroad and I didn't work once nor was I expected to. I really needed that break and it was wonderful. Why shouldn't a kid be entitled to a break from their job too? Why do they have to go to school every day year round? I think our obsession with keeping up with the Joneses has extended to keeping up with the Jones's children. If little Davey Jones is reading at a fifth grade level, you better make sure to do worksheets all summer so that your mediocre kid can too. It's not right.

I remember now for my AP classes we had summer homework. But I was 16 and 17 years old and it was reasonable and wouldn't take up your whole summer. They wanted us to read a few books and we could choose from a huge list so you could always find one you were interested in you would have read anyway. Then write a report which you could knock out on a rainy day easy. Then we were supposed to read and outline the first few chapters. Again nothing more than a few night's worth of homework. I saved it for car rides to 6 flags or grandma's and the last few days of August. Bing bang boom.

Also lots of dime store crafts and kits to build things like bird houses, paint sun catchers, mold garden path stones etc. ALWAYS the library with my kids at least once a week, there were all kinds of childrens' groups and activities free free free all summer long.

You cant push this stuff too hard on kids or they will continue to hate classwork even more, but then katie has already said that some of her kids struggle to keep up scholastically. What was it she said - "the school has a very challenging academic..." something and THAT was the reason the whole group of the younger ones was held behind from kindergarten and the reason why 2 of them needed to be removed for home schooling. Those were HER words.

Absolutely. I strongly voiced my opinion to the teachers and administrators at my kids' school when I noticed summer homework was extensive, requiring hours and hours of not only reading, but complicated written assignments as well. The answer given to me was that kids need not forget what they learned during the school year. It got to the point that I asked them why there was summer vacation at all -- why not just have year-round school.

Apparently the educators sat down and mulled that over, and decided that they were heavy on summer homework and toned it down a bit. These kids are pushed so hard academically during the school year that they need down time during the summer. As many have pointed out here, there are other ways of learning that don't utilize copied homework books.

As with so many things, Kate has not yet figured that out.

I remember the summer when my mother and grandmother challenged to me figure out which Iced Tea Mix was cheaper to use, Nestea or Lipton. Different size jars, vastly different amounts used to make the same 1/2 gallon. I was 10 years old, took my a few hours to get all the measurements the same then do the division for the cost effectiveness. I can still remember sitting on the back porch with them and hearing my grandmother say quietly to me "Now, this is why your math is so important." There are so many ways to parent a child to teach them things without 'faithfully requiring' them do strap in for worksheets for their mother to ignore anyway.

Here's some good takes about the summer homework debate from educators and experts. What I'm reading is the most striking loss of information learned happens for poorer kids, kids where English is a second language, and special ed kids.

I'm betting that kids not in those groups are getting lots of one on one though INFORMAL lessons from parents outside the classroom, such as during cooking and gardening. As for special ed kids it could be just the lack of a school routine that causes the loss. And for elementary kids the benefits were MARGINAL.

So my opinion is as long as you do some informal education, like when you cook or garden, don't worry about it.

Other than the date, I know nothing more about the Special Olympics than I knew before. Is there a website for the event, how do I register, what is the mission of the Special Olympics, can I make a donation, do I need to sign sponsors, is there an entry fee, etc?  She is the absolutely worst promoter I have ever seen. Even when the host tried to return to the topic, Kate kept returning to the only subject she cares about--herself! And, she wonders why no one will touch her with a 10 foot pole?

As always, In Kate's up-is-down, black-is-white world, her kids' main role in life is to fixate on her, what she is (or isn't) doing and her impressive accomplishments: "Everyday, after they get off the bus, they ask how many miles did you run today?""Those little things--your kids encouraging you--is REALLY important". "I never stopped moving...I never sat down...It was a marvel to them if I was sitting." (Quotes are from memory...may not be 100% correct)

Wow--my dumb, mediocre kids alway wanted to tell me about THEIR day,  THEIR accomplishments, THEIR news. My kids are such losers.... ;-)

I agree, she is awful at promotion.

As a celeb you have to be able to rattle off a solid clear list of the who, what where when and why of whatever it is you are promoting. There can't be any confusion at the end of the day. Being a good promoter means you will be hired for the next gig and the next gig at the next. If you want to make money off your celebrity you have to know how to be a used cars salesman without looking like one.

Kate can't even get past the BASICS of such a thing. She will mention an event but skip everything else. That's just not good enough.

Yep, Ex Nurse, when my daughter was younger, I don't ever remember her coming home and asking me how my day was. She wanted to tell me about how she did on a test, who caused trouble in class, who she ate lunch with, the joke she shared with a friend, etc.

Why do I feel like Kate's going to have the with her working the 5k event.

I want to be wrong but I think she's going to have the 8 with her & maybe backpack boy.

I listened to Kate's PATHETIC radio interview.

-Um honestly I love being all about running (fade out).... um honestly um I just like running when I am finished(fade out) ....

- Um honestly I am not a reader (fade out) ... I am um all about reading (fade out)...

Kate was Bad - REALLY Bad. Just another addition to her portfolio that confirms that she is not marketable or suited for a job in Media.

Another comment about Kate's radio interview:

Well we all comment about how Kate lies. And especially the way she has created an alternative fake life on twitter.

Well I don't believe 90% of what Kate tweets. And Kate confirmed I am right not to believe her.

Towards the end of her interview, Kate said that the night before taking Cara and Mady to see the movie Hunger Games that she contacted her BABYSITTER to watch the sextuplets so she could take M&C to the evening 6:30 movie.

But on twitter she lied and said the 6 were at a "friend's house":

She can NOT keep her lies straight!

Or the Gkids "best friend" is their "Babysitter".

How sad and PATHETIC for them either way.

I couldn't listen. After the first "honestly" which was a few seconds into it, I turned it off. When you have to preface your sentences with "honestly" there's a question about how honest you really are.

Kate reads criticism about herself. She has to know that she's doing this, along with the ummms, and still she hasn't taken a course in public speaking, expecting to land a job in the media. It's not going to happen, not even in a Mickey Mouse hometown radio station.
