My Exploited Valentine: Parents at elementary school object to Sister Wives filming

When "Sister Wives" went to [DELETED] Elementary School to film a Valentine's Day dance last week, some parents objected and lodged complaints with the school, citing privacy. Several other shows have filmed at the school and the parents want the school to change its filming policy.

According to TMZTLC had no comment.  But a rep for the school district said, "The district heard the concerns of the parents involved and considered them when developing [the] compromise. In the past few months, we've had the Ellen show, ABC News, Oxygen Network, and countless local broadcasts filmed at our schools. TLC and the Brown family deserved the same."

Production reportedly donated $500 to the school.

Stand strong on the side of privacy, good parents. Four major productions have filmed at your school in just a few months plus local news outlets? Outrageous.

Big difference. I did see the broadcasts of the Ellen show and was a little concerned about them showing all the kids. HOWEVER, they were being spotlighted because they had just received an enormous amount of money and support for those deserving kids, from various sources. I assume the news stories that were broadcast were related to that. Not that kids should be shown, but the school was being reported on for a very good reason.

The Brown family is being filmed to make a buck. Probably a lot of bucks. HUGE difference. They do not deserve the same consideration. They should not have the right to bring a crew in there to ruin this dance for the rest of the kids and their parents. That's disgusting.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I cannot stand Kody. He should take Kate as his next wife; they would be peas in an exploitation pod.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

PJ true, important news item about that money versus Kody just coming in to film a vanity show. Huge difference. There is no value to Kody filming except to himself.

Our local news usually blurs kids faces. If they must, why can't they film there but blur the faces? I would be very uncomfortable about all that filming even to spread a good message.

They should have turned Kody down because it was different than just filming a hot news item whose message was important to spread.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

Kody's own 16 year old daughter had more insight into why filming church was not appropriate than he ever will. Even his friends talk about how he just wants to be the center of attention that is his mission in life. There is even a bit of tension between him and his friends, if I'm not mistaken he has been estranged from some at certain times. If you think about it for some people, taking four wives is all about the attention--you will never be without a woman who is adoring you. When one gets a headache, go to the next. When one is pregnant and tired, try another. When one is busy with the kids or work, there's always another to step up. I get the feeling that's what this wives thing is really about for him, the constant adoration and attention. And personally, I generally don't have a problem with this lifestyle.

And "production" (TLC) donated a paltry $500. to the school. Outrageous!!

You know, when I read this, I wondered how many kids missed the dance because they didn't want to be part of that or their parents did not want them to be part of it. That's sad. Or maybe it's too late and they didn't know until the filming was over. Either way, it's just wrong.

Aeduko said...

bm: Really! All they could donate was $500? So not only are they exploitative to the max, they're CHEAP ASS exploiters to the max!

I know I told this story before, but it was quite a while back and relates to kids and privacy:

when my daughter made the cheerleading team in high school, the parent booster club sold these megaphone signs that are supposed to go in the front yard. They are quite big and have the name of the high school and the name of the girl who is a cheerleader. Big bright letters.

My daughter balked at that immediately and asked me not to order one. When I asked her why, she said she just wasn't comfortable broadcasting her school and her name in front of the house.

We have never been a victim of violent crime (thank God and knock wood). Our neighborhood is quiet and safe. So it's not that she's had a bad experience in the past or is overly fearful. She's just THAT private of a person. Sure, she'll get up and do cheers with her fellow cheerleaders at football games, but advertising who she is and where she goes to school 24/7 in front of her house? She had a 100% negative reaction to that.

Now, out of all the kids on reality TV or all the kids who HAVE been on reality TV (including the Gosselins), doesn't ANY adult ever think that there's bound to be at least a few kids who feel the way my daughter does? Some who are intensely protective of their own privacy? My husband feels the same way: there isn't enough money in the world that would get him to be on TV. No way, never.

So all the kids who are unfortunate enough to go to school with the "Sister Wives" kids just get no choice about having their school broadcast all over the place?

That's wrong and it's BS.

Huh? TLC and the Browns deserve the same? WTF? Why have there been "countless local broadcasts" filmed at the school anyway? So the school board's argument is that everyone should have a chance to disrupt school? No wonder the parents are fed up. Oh, and the $500 from TLC is laughable, not exactly something to crow about. That network is so cheap that it's becoming believable that Jon and Kate sold out their kids for $2000/episode.

AuntieAnn said...

I agree it's their choice as to how they want to live but allowing TLC to film the childrens' activites is exploitation, pure and simple.

Kody is nothing but a male counterpart to Kate as far as I`m concerned. He tries to come off as Mr. Nice Guy, but he sold out his kids the day he signed up with TLC, so he doesn't get my vote, nor do the mothers for going along with it.

The last SW I watched was when wife #4 just got through birthing a baby and was offering up her uterus to wife #1 to surrogate a baby because #1 can't have any more babies. So there's a whole season right there. It was so scripted it was vomit-inducing.

God. Y'all are right. I took a gander at that Menu Monday Meatball Mess she put up.

She IS living her life like it's still in episodes. Everything she says on Twitter is like that. All these pictures. Seeing those meatball prep pictures really drove it home. In her mind, she's pretending the show is still going on.

It gave me chills, I'm telling you. I guess a positive way to look at this is that this is the next step in her journey of realization. Hopefully the last step in that journey is "I need to get a full-time job with a full-time paycheck."

Dallas Lady said...

Oh and again, if that's all those kids get for dinner, I truly feel sorry for them. They go to bed with a growling stomach, unless they are allowed or sneak snacks to supplement that.

Prisoners of war in China used to be given 1/2 a cup of cooked rice a day to eat. It was the perfect torture because it was too little to really live on, but too much to die.

This is not to say she's torturing her kids with only giving them a few hundred calories a day, but she's still underfeeding them, nonetheless. So sad. All that production and prep work, and it doesn't even translate to a full belly.

I think Kody would make a better Lion King. That's who I thought he looked like the first time I saw him, except the Lion King isn't going bald prematurely.

The 70's called and want their wardrobes back also. Soon enough the fine clothes and jewels will show up.I feel for the kids in this family, having no say where they go or where they live and friends are watched to see if they fit the mold for their precious, screwy bunch.

I see another wife coming, a teen pregnancy or two, boys on 'the strip' and some girls who think sharing a husband is Aok.Vegas is not the place to have these kids grow up, not after their sheltered home life, asking for trouble.

Of course, Kody thinks he's worth it, can't stand him or the show, feel for the kids introducing the dates to their family- awkward!Kody appears to have an anger problem and even his friends say he's an attention -seeker.

No way on earth you could father all those kids effectively, just by the sheer numbers.I would be worried that one of the kids might end up dating their cousins or brothers, if this is a big congregation of believers.Would a girl think of asking, how many moms do you have to a guy she wants to date?Makes me go hmmmmmmmmm.

During the episode while #4 was giving birth, #1 was all teary-eyed about #4's new baby and sad that she couldn't have any more herself, so after the birth, #4 asked to be left alone with #1 and that's when she asked #1 if she would let her carry Kody's and #1's baby. That's where it was left to be picked up this season (I think). Oh the drama. Personally I think #4 is trying to get Kody to spend more time with her, which would play well into the underlying jealousy theme I think TLC is trying to promote.

Several random thoughts:

I don't watch SW; my creep-o-meter goes off. That guy, EEWWW.

As for Kate living her life in episodes as mentioned the other day, that made my hair stand up. That is creepy, too. Good call on who made that analogy.

I wonder just how much money this lady has in the bank..she said she didn't make 250,000, but other sources said it was in the 25,000 range, and that was for the later eps...so I am assuming they made pennies in the first few 'seasons",

She is on record as saying you can't ever have enough money, but I wonder how much she REALLY has? And how much do the kids have, you think?

I don't watch the Duggars, but have seen an episode occasionally if my kids were watching. I don't care if they are the sweetest, nicest people on the planet, they are profiting off their kids. What educational lesson are they trying to teach by having Anna give birth on an episode?

Sometimes I try to figure out/understand WHY these people put their kids on tv...but, it's like trying to figure out why an abuser molests children. If you aren't like them, you will never understand it.

One of the thoughts I have always had about Kate is that she never emotionally bonded with her kids...they were preemies being handled by nurses, then when home, they were handled by a yr or so by nurses and volunteers..and all the while she stood back and watched as an OBSERVER and ORGANIZER..even in the rv ep, through all the chaos, she said as bad as it was, she still liked the organization of it. That creeped me out, too.

She is a Cow said...

I don't watch SW and only know what is written about it here. From what I understand, some of the kids were having trouble with the move to LV.

Isn't it nice that TLC has to add to the adjustment of going to a new school and trying to make new friends, the invasion of privacy at a valentines dance. Way to make it easy on the kids TLC.

I wouldn't be surprised if parents did not let their kids go to the dance because of the filming then what does that leave. A resentful kid, mad at the SW kids for ruining their valentines dance.

I fully support the parents and kids fighting to keep the school's social functions private! TLC has no business being at an elementary school dance.

Shame on the district for letting it happen.

Also, no mention of ORGANIC?? lol

Dallas Lady said...

I've always thought she never bonded with a single kid. Not even one of the twins.

There was just something essential missing in her interactions with them, always. She treated them like a group, not as individuals. And even when you see her speak to an individual child, there's no warmth, no depth, just surface level directions being barked.

I noticed this pretty quickly after I discovered this family (the first three things I noticed: how tightly wound she seemed to be, how crappy she treated Jon, and how cold she was to the kids and this was when the tups were barely three).

So I started trying to see if I could ever find a loving, affectionate moment initiated by Kate and directed to a child.

You can count them on one hand, no joke. Cold as a fish, that one.

And we've seen evidence on Twitter repeatedly that she doesn't even know basic stuff about a lot of them.

Amy2 said...

A bit off topic, nope, way off topic. I was just thinking about this...who paid for the tups birth and who paid Kate's medical expenses while she was in the hospital prior to the birth. Was this all covered by Jon's insurance? If I'm following the timeline correctly, Jon was unemployed when the tups were born so he wouldn't have insurance. Does any know how the medical expenses were paid?

aggiemom09121416 said...

I think Kate liked the idea of multiples, not the actual 'taking care' of multiples.
She had so much help, she probably stayed in the kitchen making bottles all the time..Jon left her coffee by the bed, got the twins up, dressed, fed and off to school before she even got up. She later checked on the babies, dressed, changed them, then placed them in the living room and left them there to cry and carry on...after lunch, they had a what, 3 hr nap? Poor Jon had to come home to his second job, all the while listening to her nag. She also said he did all the bathing...I have NEVER met a mom who didn't want to bathe her own child.
As the kids got older it just got worse, if they cried, it was to the corner or to bed, if they got out of bed, it was back to bed for even more time. Then, besides the normal help of sitters and laundry, Aunt Jody would take the kids for one day a week, giving Kate the whole day off. When did she EVER help Jody with her kids? I would bet never.
Something happened to Kate as a child, it had to..her one brother that was seen on the show appeared to exhibit normal behavior, so Kate really has me scratching my head. It puzzles me how she says people always leave her, yet she is the one that pushes them away until they have to leave. What happened to her as a child? It really is quite sad. She is to be pitied, actually.

What sane and rational person says, oh, gee, we don't have any money, a job or insurance, lets get expensive fertility treatments for a child we can't afford (much less multiples).
I am so glad I live in TX, if I lived any where near Kate I think it would just drive me nuts.

Dallas Lady, it's almost unfathomable what that family has received for free. Let's see-- I got comped a free dessert at a restaurant the other night and was so grateful and showed it in my tip. I can't imagine having no pride or gratitude that I would accept things for free that I can buy for myself. The fact that Kate sold her children's free clothing is awful.
I think that new kitchen has to go to the top of the grifting list. Just that probably cost 70-80K. Just the stove that Kate posed in front of cost around 10k, and her brand new fridge even more.
I remember watching the episode where Kate came back from an all-expense paid luxury beach vacation and had to rustle up a thimble-full of enthusiasm when she got to see her brand new kitchen.
She was tired from the trip home. Waaaaaa.

Westcoaster, this is the best I could do with the meatball sub pics, from where I'm at now:

Meatball subs...err, rolls

If someone could grab the pics somehow so we aren't going to Khate's website, that would be sweet. I was going to say what Aggiemom said, they're meatball rolls, not subs. Figures Khate would ruin them by using ground turkey. I like ground turkey myself, but not for everything.

With Khate being an "anomaly" for having six babies at once, with little or no insurance, I'm sure she was a charity case at the hospital. The publicity the hospital received was a probably a nice bonus, but it in no way paid for the thousands, if not millions, spent on care for the Gosselin family. Khate also received free, charity lodging from the Ronald McDonald House. Whether or not Khate adequately donated back with her wealth is anyone's guess.

Regarding fertility treatments, I don't think Khate paid for those, either. There have been rumors that Jon's father paid for them. That may have been why Khate was making the most of them, risky cycles and all.

My theory on Kate. Middle child, submissive mother, domineering father. Denied privileges she saw her peers had (clothes, shoes, TRIPS, etc) and thought there was something lacking in her own life. Perhaps she felt unloved as a child, and her wish was to have many children that she would love, love, love, and lavish all the things she didn't have as a child.
Unable to connect with people, possibly due to no real warm relationship with either parent, perhaps her siblings as well.

Sometimes the worst thing that can happen is to get what you wish for.

This is harsh, but I see the same detachment as you would find in a serial killer. It's creepy.

(Example, what mother in their right mind, says 'it's only fair' that they switch buses due to lack of air conditioning? They way she said it, was just so cold, you would think she was talking about complete strangers. Gee, if that was me, we would have all sat on the air conditioned bus until a new one arrived, or ALL the kids rode in the a/c bus with ONE adult.. her complete detachment is unbelievable.

Well, the meatball bun was not a sub. It was great Kate gave credit where credit is due. But after reading the recipe, man way too much salt. If you put salt in the sauce, no need to put it in the meat. If you are using can stuff, like the beef both and other, there is no need to put extra salt in it. I bet those kids were drinking lots of water later.
I would not like cameras at my childs school. It disrupts, and can place kids in harms way. If Mr Sister Wives, wants to fit in with society, then I don't give 2 shits if you are filming TV show, you need to clear it with the rest of the parents, and the school board, and vote on it, since TLC offer only $500, if I were on the school board, would have told TLC to jump in the lake. My boss used to run 12 miles a day, every day, before work and he came in with a healthy glow, bursting at the seams with energy. Marathon must be coming up. She will jump up suddenly to 18 miles and then 26, out of the blue. She knows now that she doesn't have to work so hard. I will never believe she ran a 26.2. She finished one but did not run it. She hates to run. You can tell. It is just a job.

Did someone seriously just compare Kate to a serial killer? For real?

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

No, they didn't. You're taking it out of context. What was compared was Kate's DETACHMENT, which is characteristically found in those with psychopathic tendencies (including serial killers). Nobody even remotely suggested that she is a killer, or compared her to one.

Some need to learn to effectively analyze within the context of a statement and be able to determine what is being compared and to whom, without leaping to conclusions. There is far too much twisting of statements going on.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

No one compared Kate to a serial killer. The detachment she has is an anti-social thing that many people possess, and it is one thing that certain anti social personalities have--some are very high functioning members of society and wouldn't harm a fly. Some are actors, politicians, athletes, and other successful people who are able to have successes, but still are rather detached from other people and the world. A small minority end up as serial killers. If that was Kate I would think she would have killed by now! LOL.

Kokomo, Cocktails, and Dreams said...

I don't know how much those "subs" cost her to make, but wouldn't she be so much less stressed if she just went to Subway and bought two foot-long subs for ten dollars? That would easily feed eight kids. In fact, with the little bit she feeds them, maybe even ONE sub for five dollars would take care of all of them.

Regarding Kate's detachment, I think that she can "love and mother" her kids from afar speaks volumes. Moreover was the very strange arrangement that she would have with Jon when she extensively traveled with Steve.
I check in with DH about my dogs more than Kate did her own children. It was very odd that she wouldn't call home to speak with them.
It's like when they are out of sight they are out of mind and most normally developed people miss their loved ones when separated and have an urge to return to be close to them.
Kate's parents are another example of her detachment. She cut them off but what really stinks is that she took them away from the kids. On one of her final episodes she pondered having the grandparents visit with the kids. And then the thought just left her head. Boom, gone.
That's off behavior. I don't think her parents were bad parents in the least. Maybe Kate didn't get everything that she wanted growing up but most kids do not. Heck, I wanted my own horse growing up and was eternally disappointed that it never came to fruition. I can't imagine holding it against my parents. They worked hard and I was fortunate in so many ways.
It's not that Kate wasn't loved. The love was never enough.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
This is what I remember--
Jon was fired from his job with a cabinet maker, while kate was pregnant with the tup. Jon and Kate said that it was because the employer did not want to pay for the health premiums--the employer denied this, but it was picked up and repeated in the media. There was an article in a local paper Reading Eagle???) that researched this and substantiated that Jon was fired because he was using his work computer to look for freebies on company time. The state gave him a job with the state--I think that was the job he quit to become a full-time reality host and go to work in his home office in his closet.

Re the filming at this school: So basically TLC said "Everybody else does it." ??? Why do folks still watch that channel? I have no interest in this show and have never caught any of it but the whole thing sounds sicko to me.

Is this school in the states? Parents will hit up the school board soon enough, the city's mayor, their state reps. their state school board. Plenty of avenues for parents to stop the prostituting of their children's school; and that measly little $500 would only pay for a 1/2 dozen text books. NOTE TO TLC: you want to bribe a school, it should cost you a whole lot more than that.

RE Kate and the poop smear episode: I remember her screeching "Never happened to me before I MY LIFE!" At that point she had been a 'mother' for about 6 years. "IN MY LIFE!" indeed. She was just pissed as hell that she couldnt make that diaper wait till Jon got off his day job to come home and do it. ME ME ME ME ME!

I would have expected at least a $5,000 donation, minimum.

Bingo. They were on welfare, they stayed on welfare for at least a year, with Kate demanding an ongoing private duty NURSE in the home on the taxpayers dime. Told a reporter "Otherwise it's just me home with all these kids and that's not fair." (ME ME ME NOT FAIR TO MEEEE!) PA taxpayers paid it all for a long time, and I havent heard or read anything about welfare wanting to be paid back now that the family is wealthy.

The medical expenses for all 10 of those people was paid for by WELFARE, I am sure Kate feels totally entitled to be supported by WELFARE. Funny how they managed to have the cash for fertility treatments though.

I called home several times a day, and before bed to make sure that she knew where they slept and what treats they got. She finally got so sick of my calling that she said she wasn't going to answer the phone anymore!

I remember when Kate made the statement about not talking to Jon while she was gone, unless there was an emergency. I just couldn't wrap my head around that. That was a clear example of detachment. It was strange, cold, and just so untypical of responsible parenting.

My dad always told me I would get the horse when we got the fence. We never got the fence. To this day I can still hear him saying, "We will. When we get the fence."

Button Button, Ellen profiled that school on her show. Many of the children there are homeless and something like 95% were on free or reduced lunch. The principal is an absolutely incredible woman, who has made it her mission to get these families (not just the kids, but the whole family) what they need, from clothing to glasses to doctor appointments, to power bills paid, etc. Somehow Ellen found out about this and Target came alongside and donated $100,000. You literally could not keep from crying when she presented this to the principal. Then Justin Bieber promised to do a private concert there. Then another company, perhaps JC Penney, also made a huge donation and/or outfitted/remodeled their abysmal library. It was really wonderful. So the school was on Ellen at least 3 times for these things, and then they started doing similar stuff for other impoverished schools. No doubt the national and local media picked up on it, hence the other broadcasts too. There was no exploitation at all, just reporting on a feel good story that kept getting bigger and better.

How detached are you, if your child is seriously constipated and you wave him away like you would shoo a fly? She was more interested in attaining new beds for the kids than attending to her crying child. I was horrified.
Sorry if I offended anyone, that was certainly not my intent.

TLC ship is sinking said...

From the TMZ link in the blog post, it looks as if the district's compromise for the parents was to not discuss the location of the school (yet anyone who reads this article can google the school) and to blur out the children's faces. (Yes, it's a public school not private according to greatschools.org.)

"According to sources, parents at the school were notified days before filming -- but a large group strongly objected to it, and lodged complaints with the school.

In the end, we're told the school worked out a deal with the production company behind the show -- in which producers agreed not to discuss the location of the school and blur out the faces of any children not associated with the show.

But we're told several parents were still upset -- believing the cameras represented an invasion of privacy -- and now, they want the local school district to revamp its on-campus filming policies."

http://www.tmz.com/2012/02/20/sister-wives-parents-upset-tv-crew-cameras/#.T0LIr_WZG_J

Additionally, the TMZ article mentions that this Valentine's dance was a school fundraising event, which TLC donated $500. How much did the Browns donate? At the very least, TLC should have done what many corporations or businesses do - match the donations the dance pulls in for the school or make a substantial donation.**

Many schools are cash-strapped these days, but I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea of a school district willing to exploit their students for x-amount of dollars, whether it's $500 or $1 million for a reality show. Would it even go directly to funding students' education or would the administration want a cut for negotiating? If TLC paid them $1 million, would we feel better about this exploitation? I certainly wouldn't.

**Even if TLC matched the fundraising donations or paid them $1 million (which they didn't), it still would leave a bad taste in my mouth because it's essentially saying that for the right price, it's okay to exploit the privacy of innocent children. It's not their fault that their school is strapped for cash.

I can see how Sister Wives would be more upsetting to the parents than an appearance on Ellen, as Sister Wives is a controversial reality show on a network that doesn't always show children in the best, most positive light. If many parents were against this, I fear this drama with TLC and the Browns might have been played out in front of the cameras.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

Blurring out the faces is a good thing but it doesn't completely fix the problem. Cameras are disruptive to kids. They are distracting, crews take up room, they can make kids feel uncomfortable or make kids ham it up. They can single out the kids being filmed making them feel better than other kids or in some cases feel embarrassed and different. At least it was just a dance but what's next they are in the classroom while they're trying to work? At a certain point cameras there more than a few times become too disruptive to a child's normal schooling, be it schoolwork or social activities like dances, to justify it even with faces blurred. Since they've already had so many crews there already to document something newsworthy, they should have stopped future filming. Enough is enough.

And nothing wrong with a little junk, either. It's the fake "we always eat like we're trying to lose weight" thing that grates, especially for the kids. What's wrong with sliders made with lean ground beef? How about spaghetti and meatballs? Grilled cheese? Mac and cheese? Those kids would go crazy for that kind of food. How horrible to be on a diet when you're a scrawny kindergartener. If those kids are meant to be heavy, like their parents are, so be it.

The Meatball Sub was not made out of meat or a submarine bun- it was a chicken ball on a roll. Why not use part of the half a cow and make them acc to the recipe? I'm sure the chicken can be used for her famous chicken cacciatore etc ad nauseum. I got the feeling she serves the same meal night after night until they're finished it all, as in one epi a twin said they had eggplant parm for 3 consecutive nights...

About bonding, Kate basically said she bonded only with Hannah among the tups since she held her first.Hannie is still and obviously the favorite although all of them are equally adorable . I wonder if H gets resented for that. I imagine H moved back into the bedroom with the other girls because she wanted to, not because they missed her.

With the twins I think she was disappointed they did not remain as 'identical' as they first appeared. Cara grew more into sports and Kate had her issues with Mady and the tups took over the spotlight.

I can well believe she never changed dirty diapers since Jon got the morning ones and the evening ones, and she was probably too exhausted to deal with any others so asked a helper to do it if one needing changing- but with all that naptime, they probably lay in dirty nappies for hours- no wonder Alexis was in such a state!... I agree it's weird she did not really know how to bathe a baby- she looked like she didn't know how to pick Alexis (?) up or deal with the situation, like a normal mom.

"None of this comes as a surprise to David Rothermel. Owner of a custom cabinetry business in Lancaster County, he was Jon’s boss (and a friend of Jon’s parents) during Kate’s second pregnancy. He’s the guy singled out during Jon and Kate’s speaking engagements as the man who “did not want to insure [Jon] … they let him go.” However, Rothermel says — and supporting documents prove — that Jon Gosselin was fired for other reasons. The state unemployment office ruled that Jon improperly did a side job on company time; furthermore, Rothermel claims that before the babies were even born, Jon was on the phone and the Internet soliciting freebies, boasting openly that he was never going to have to work again. Indeed, the Gosselin family website, Sixgosselins.com, was registered before the babies were born, and later featured a “Prayer List” of wants — a 15-passenger van, “a house that we fit into and can afford … it’s going to literally take a miracle” — along with a “Praise List” with the names of folks and companies and the supplies they’d donated. When the babies were six months old, family members, friends and neighbors got a letter containing the Gosselins’ account number with the electric company, in case anyone felt moved to pay the couple’s bill. (A TLC spokeswoman says the letter came from friends looking to help the Gosselins.)

I do agree though that a kid will be what he will be and healthy eating and exercise are good but not determinative. I hesitate to blame Kate's parents since I think she might have been just a bad egg. But if she wasn't abused, it seems to me she has a lot of resentment built up about things she wasn't given as a child.

Which begs the question even kids who have very little can still be very happy, so did her parents fail in some way in showing her how to find happiness in the little you do have and how to find happiness in fun in things that don't have dollar amounts, like quality time with family and friends? For whatever reason she never learned how to feel fulfilled no matter your circumstances.

Money or not, maybe her parents failed in that respect, teaching Kate to be happy with what you have.

Almost. If they get the combos. It's $4.45 per lunch with your selection of a pasta combo, cold combo, hot combo, soup/salad combo, this includes the entree, salad, dessert and beverage. They wouldn't have to purchase anything extra. $4.45 is all inclusive. Ala carte items are also available, and they could get a sandwich, chips and milk for under three dollars. They could mix and match anything they want, but it's more expensive to do it that way.

So spending ~$800 per month on school lunches would get her "good mom" points from you? It's not exactly a crime against childhood to pack your children's lunches rather than allow them to buy from the school cafeteria. Sounds like a wise financial choice to me.

OT: although Amy Roloff was not the best housekeeper, I always thought she seemed like a good cook for a family. I would read her cookbook.

I remember she was not fazed by having crowds of kids or relatives over for a meal. I wonder if the G kids ever bring friends to dinner and what these kids think of Kate's cuisine?

I can also imagine kids teasing them at school, saying, " you didn't eat your 'crunchy' so you can't have your smiley organic (one) cookie!"

Much ado: Buying lunch is a real treat for kids not used to it. I think Fridays for buying lunch would be a great compromise. I did this on pizza day and my otherwise packed- lunch kids enjoyed this. Yes, for Kate to relinquish a little control would earn her a point with me, anyhow.

You're missing the point. I agree, it is a wise financial choice. At 4.45 a pop, any mom could easily make a healthy substantial lunch for half that, maybe even less.

BUT, do you see the hypocrisy in Kate? She wants to cut corners with everything to do with the kids, but when will she ever cut corners for herself? Audi, hair, trips to NY (have you followed this? She just went last weekend!), and on and on.

I hope she packs the required snack and bus snack in another bag and that it doesn't come out of that one. I can hardly believe that they are known to have the best lunches because it looks more like a bunch of snacks to me (maybe that is why they think they are the best). It looks like a lot because it is packed tightly in a small overall container, but the portions are very small.

It's one thing to be thrifty and watch your pennies if YOU are going to do the same. But how can a parent justify spending money every six weeks or so at expensive NYC salons, but not spend $800 on kids' lunches -- money that THEY have earned?

When you add up the cost of lunches throughout the school year, it's $7,200. How much did she pay for hair extensions? How much for shoes at a pop? The thing is that she has it for HERSELF but scrimps when it comes to the kids.

Achhh! So sick of her constant travel/grifting obsession.

Kate, guess what, you CAN travel on your OWN with your OWN money and CHEAPLY. You are close to all kinds of places where you could easily drive - beaches, mountains, lakes. A trip that "makes memories" does not have to involve a foreign country and 24 hours of flight. The best memories of my kids and their cousins, our two families always traveled together when the kids were young, were to places only 3 hours and 8 hours away from home. (And we ate and stayed cheaply, often just made it a 3-4 day trip). The oldest one is now 21, and to this day they all reminisce about THOSE memories, not the "big" trips.

New York State of Mind said...

Oops...you could knock off $1,400 on that amount for holidays and breaks, so the total lunch cost for everyone per year would be $5,800.

How much is a limo trip to and from NYC, plus hair, dinner and nights at the Essex House...and that's just one trip?

That was amusing, Audible Click! That's the most straightforward article I've seen about this lunatic idea of a Kate cruise. And the comments (almost every one of the 69 posted when I read the article), well, let's just say that the cruising community doesn't seem to think that Kate is much of a draw.

If Kate cancels, or "flakes", as the article suggests is quite possible, cruisers are still on the hook for the cruise. They will just miss Her Kateness.

The article also notes that, although MOST "celebrities" donate their hard-earned cruising fees to charity, Kate has yet to name one. The article suggests that many people believe that Kate's "charity" is her own children's college fund.

I think that's plain wrong. I suspect that Kate's cruise "charity" is her Audi sports car. Or her hair. Or her nails. Or Nobu. You know, something along those lines. Those kids are going to be on their own for college.

Sheeple? The cruise with Kate ain't gonna happen. You can't pay her enough to be there. Literally.

Kate either needs to save their money, or if she is in a position where she has enough to spend it, she needs to be spending the majority of it on them and not on herself. From what I see, 90% of big ticket items go to her and 10%, if that, to the kids. How does that make any sense? Morally?

She doesn't necessarily have to buy them school lunches, but I want to see some kind of effort from her to show that most of the big ticket items or luxury items are for them. She always claims she did this all for the kids, yet all her actions suggest otherwise. The kids live like normal kids, while she still lives like on VIP rock star on their dime. It's WRONG.

Think about it, what did the kids get this year? Bikes....a few trinkets for V-day......the odd xmas gift....other than that? The kids got jack.

KATE is the one who got all the big ticket toys. Cars, hair cuts, wardrobe, several trips include Vegas and Australia again. Another trip coming up this summer. Where are all the kids' trips they have worked so hard for? The only time she is taking the twins on a trip this summer is to WORK.

She is so transparent. She doesn't even try to pretend Kate only cares about spending money on Kate.

Lurk daily. Post seldom. But does anyone remember a really early episode where they went back to the hospital where the tups were born? She went on about how they "love us" and would be "so excited" to see them again. She got mad at John for putting on the wrong shoes. He changed them into "better" shoes. When they got to the hospital it was muddy and she griped at him for not recognizing that it would be muddy, so the first shoes he put on were better. Then the hospital workers were not only less than thrilled, they called the kids by the wrong name. You could tell that bugged Kate. The hospital workers looked downright sullen that she was back. That was the episode where I started hating Kate.

Further, if Kate is as lazy as everyone says, wouldn't it be easier for her to hand the kids lunch money than to make their lunches?

I totally agree that it would be great if she let the kids buy their lunches once a week or every so often as that might be fun for them. Of course, no one knows that she doesn't do that.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

Depends if you buy in bulk and get a good sale, all the plastic wrapped stuff isn't always that much of a drain when the price is right. I'm a big lunch packer and I'll often get those kind of things. Also it just saves time. It's nice to just throw things in lunch boxes. I'm actually surprised it takes her 20 minutes, with all the packaged stuff you only need toss in the boxes I would imagine it should take more like 10. What I like doing is make a bunch of burritos on a Sunday. I just made some breakfast burrito ones and you can fill them with whatever, chicken, turkey, beef. They probably come out to 50 cuts a burrito. Toss in freezer, then in the morning, toss in lunch boxes, it's dethawed by noon. I love packing lunch tips to make it fast, easy and cheap. Unfortunately Kate gave me none, yet again.

What number was that post?

Do we know that Kate packs the lunches and not the nannies/sitters? Just because she says she does, or if we saw her doing it for an episode, means nothing. Don't forget, too, that she enjoys setting herself up as a frazzled, tired mom in order to gain sympathy. If she makes the lunches, or leads her flock to believe that she does, it's another one in a long string of tactics used to get put herself out that as the poor, exhausted mom. Is she grifting for someone to pay the kids' meals at school? It wouldn't surprise me.

You still haven't addressed the point that she has money to spend on herself, but cuts way back when it comes to her kids.

No, because number one, most days the nanny probably makes the lunches. And number two, Kate is only lazy to the point where she doesn't have to spend the kids' money on the kids. If she gets so lazy she actually has to spend money on them, she'll roll herself out of bed and accomplish something.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

Yes please do point me to the post where someone suggested Kate is a bad mother for packing lunches. No, Kate is a bad mother for spending her children's money on herself and only herself.

In fact I see most people here suggesting a compromise: a few bought lunches a week to let them live a little, learn how to fend for themselves, learn that if you buy X Y and Z it costs this amount, etc. Since I myself have probably saved myself and my family thousands of dollars a year on making lunches, I couldn't be more supportive of packing a lunch to save money and provide yourself better healthier choices. But we still go out to eat with coworkers, friends, or family once in awhile for lunch.

But yet will never, ever cut back when it comes to her own indulgences. How about go to a local hair dresser for once instead of another lavish trip to NY? After all the kids all do their part by eating lunches by mom. She may just like what the hair dresser does who knows but she won't even try! Her lunches may be much better than the school food, who knows. That is again, not the point.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

Much Ado, I just want Kate to cut back EQUALLY. If she is going to cut back with the kids, that's great, all the more money for them when they are 18. But why can't SHE cut back? What's fair is fair. If the kids have to eat homemade lunches, then she can in turn do her part by cutting back on NYC trips. Everyone may end up quite happy with such changes! The whole family should do their part, not just the kids.

Hmmm...I never really thought to add up how much I spend per month on hot lunches for my three kids. It's $3.25 per lunch, 20 school days (give or take a few days) in a month, so that's $65 per kid or $195 a month or $1755 for a 9 month school year. I'll have to ask my husband how much he thinks a home made lunch runs per kid. I just never really thought about how much that was over the course of a year. Rather interesting.

I don't know how Kate does it in her house, but at ours we go over the lunch menu for the coming month and the kids pick the days they would like a lunch from home and then we post the menu on the refrigerator door. Works for us.

I'm experimenting with making microwave potato chips tonight. Haven't gotten the combination quite right yet. First potato was sliced unevenly (I think I'll use my cuisinart rather than my mandoline next time). 1/2 went in with a little olive oil spray on the parchment paper and salt. They came out a bit soggy/rubbery. Second half went in, I blotted those chips thoroughly and just salted them. They came out crisp but overly browned. So I think the olive oil spray is an important component. I will spray but blot and see what happens to the next round.

If anyone's done this before and has advice, please feel free to share!

I am sure if buying school lunches was cheaper than packing lunches, all the kids would be buying lunches- that is the point-Kate takes the economical route with her children, but not for herself. That is selfish.

The most interesting part of the lunch post was the use of the word "require." I require a this, I require a that.

Require sounds like a directive, not a description of packing a lunch for little kids.

Could someone post a link to Kate's lunch blog, please?

IMO, Kate's packing lunch for her kids has nothing to do with being a "good" mother, nor about being economical. It's all about control. If the kids buy their lunches, then Kate can't control what they eat, the amount they eat, or, God help us, the order in which they eat.

Allowing the kids to buy their lunches occasionally is a good idea, but is it permissable? All the schools I've been involved with, as a student, a teacher, and now as volunteer have had an either/or policy. You either pack a lunch or you buy a lunch, there's no changing about.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

Readerlady I have no idea what the policy is for this school. Locals, anyone? The way I've always seen it you buy a certain "number" each month, like say you want to buy lunch every Friday, you would buy four or five for the month. Either or seems kind of harsh, what if you really want the pasta they serve on wednesdays but hate the stew they serve on Thursdays?

SG said...

Much ado,

The point is Kate packing lunches for her children has nothing to do with the food being better or healthier for them. She herself said it's the money. It is more economical for her (so she claims) to pack their lunches.

So she is packing them lunch to save money. Period.

If she needs to cut back anywhere why must it be with their lunches? Why not with HER haircuts, trips to NYC, her Audi, etc?

Why can't you see the point being made here?

Obviously my daughters don't go to the same school as the G kids, but at their school they can choose each day if they want the school lunch or a packed lunch. We get the month's menu each month so they can decide.

They can also bring in a packed lunch and buy "extras" there such as a hot pretzel or funnel cake.

It also doesn't matter if they purchase the school lunch or have home packaged lunch, all the children can sit at the same table.

You would probably say I require a protein if you were not the one packing the lunches....as in I require the nanny to pack a protein.

Dr Drew's Life Changers show has disappointed me. I don't know what I expected, but most of it is pure sleaze. I like Dr Drew and wonder why that show is so, well, unlikeable.

However, it is on a channel I do watch sometimes, and I noticed Dr Drew had a show that featured a guy that used to be the boyfriend of that Snooky person who has a reality show on MTV.

I think his name was Emil.

His mom wants him out of her house.

He has been living there, sleeping on her sofa in a small apartment, for a year or so, and he won't get a job because he thinks he can't work unless it is something BIG like another reality show.

He says he should have DVD's for sale, and should be famous in other ways, and he isn't going to take a job that doesn't pay like the reality show, etc, etc.

Well...anyway, sounds sort of like our friend Kate, doesn't it?

Dr Drew and the guy's mom were trying to convince him that he might HAVE to take any job he can get, as there might not be anything better out there for him.

I will be very interested to see if Dr Drew gives Kate that same advice.

I'll bet not.

Mel great call!

Kate's I require this and I require that sound EXACTLY like the directions someone like Kate would give the nanny. LOL, she gave herself away.
