Discussion Thread: RV Trip 8/29/11

Kate Plus 8
RV Trip
9 p.m. EST, TLC, TV-PG

The Gosselins, Ashley and Jamie are on the road again, traveling across middle America in an RV for 2 weeks -- and Kate's driving! Witness the family like you've never seen them before, visiting the nation's most beautiful landscapes and attractions.

Ooo, I hope we get to see 'My Rushmore'!

Meanwhile, Hollywood Reporter has an excellent article about how the suicide of Real Housewives' cast member Russell Armstrong has shed some light on how exploitive reality television can be--not just on children, but everyone participating.

Says Hollywood Reporter:
"All about me" has become the mantra of reality TV, even if it means opening up painful private lives to cameras and sacrificing family and friends -- and even, perhaps, if it means someone might die.
...."This is the worst-case scenario for the reality TV business," says one executive who declined to be named. "It's a very public suicide of a guy who was made to look absolutely terrible on that show. This death is causing people to think hard about the kinds of people we make shows about and whether they are equipped psychologically to be television stars."....While it would be simplistic to claim that Bravo or Real Housewives of Beverly Hills producers Evolution Media were responsible for his death, they are operating in an environment that remains unregulated and inadequately scrutinized. On many shows, for instance, participants sign "360-degree deals," notes Hayden Meyer, a partner and head of alternative TV at agency APA. That means the production company can take a percentage of any income a performer earns from books, appearances and the like.
Unfettered by contracts with AFTRA, SAG and other guilds, most networks have the right to replay each episode as often as they wish or to "repackage" series to create new episodes, without paying participants extra cash. "It's a buyer's market," Meyer laments.

Not all of us Anon....Not me! And so what? Some people here have worked long hours and many years to see Karma tapping on Khate's shoulder. They deserved something, however small for their hard work in getting kids off TV.

I haven't watched since the Crooked House episode. I decided to boycott for the kids sake. It shouldn't matter now. I don't care if Kate does any job (even media) after this. Just so the kids are left at home or better yet, with their dad. Maybe it is already too late for the little ones to lead a normal life. As their mother she makes daily choices that aren't in their best interests. But, I don't think she is knows that. She will someday. Her regrets will overwhelm her then. (Sorry about anonymous. I had to try 3 times.)

gncbiz said...

I can't get this image out of my head: Did anybody ever watch the show with
Martha Stewert's daughter? She would play and critique her mom's old shows. Some programming genious in 15 years is going to give those kids a chance to voice-over all their mother's neurotic pathological bologna.

On an unrelated note, I wonder if Steve watches the episodes and what he thought when Clay said they needed servants to bring them things and one of the Gosselin kids said "Steve". Kate was quick to say "that's not his job" but didn't she just send him to fetch a man off the street?

WOW - I've been reading all the comments on last night's 'show' just to get an idea of the flavor of it. As a Canadian, I find K's dismissive remark about "one of the Roosevelts" truly shocking. Politics aside, both of the men she referred to served as President of the United States and, in my opinion, deserve respect. She appears to have exhibited her ignorance and missed her chance to bone up on what should have been a learning experience for the children.

Having said that, I am looking forward to reading a re-cap. Thanks in advance Administrator - thanks to K, you have a lot to work with. LOL

Oh by the way, let's talk about RVs and Hurricane Katrina.

In case Kate didn't know, if you lost your home in Katrina like so many families did, FEMA might provide you with a trailer. A trailer to LIVE IN, Kate.

I spent a week in New Orleans with the Red Cross in 2007. This was almost a year and a half after the Hurricane. People were still living in these. They lived in them for months and sometimes years!

Volunteers also stayed in FEMA RVs. It had a small bedroom on each end, and tables in the living room that turned over into extra beds to sleep in. We were four girls to it. We welcomed it as a chance to really understand what these people had been going through. It was comfortable but small, it was fine for a week. We wouldn't dream of complaining about it when people had lived in a trailer for years! They were 1/3 of the size of Kate's RV.

Kate only had to spend two weeks in a luxury RV exactly like many rock stars on tour get and all she can do is bitch and moan. She has no clue, none.

9/12/11 the finale, who cares. I will be reflecting on 10 years after 9/11/11. I will be praying for the children who never had a chance to really know their mother and father. I will be praying for the grey haired parents who had to bury their child. I will be remembering that day when I saw both towers come down from my office window and realized that the rescue workers and people were still trapped inside. I will be praying for all the first responders and neighborhood people who got sick from the putrid air from the pit. And I will pray for all the people whose lives got turned upside down by Hurricane Irene. But I will pray for peace for all the Gosselin children. Karma eventually catches up with you, TLC and Kate Kreider, what goes around comes around.

P.S. If she's a size 2, then, I'm a size 000, I wear petite size 2, no way that big boned stumpy woman is a size 2. Remember when she was on the couch on The View, she was bigger than all of those women.

Really? One of the kids called Steve a servant? Those little guys are sure going to have some serious adjustments in their future.

I imagine they've been raised to believe they are little princes and princesses and everyone else around them are servants. They are taught this purely by just watching Kate.

I forgot to say that Kate would be upset about the dvd not working, 'cause the tups have to watch their show during their 4 hr naps and @ bedtime! You would think that they could find something else to do instead of relying on technology....Ashley usually has such good games, ideas for them to play, etc.

The mores expensive a garment is the more likely it is sized smaller. Still don't think she could be a 2, even in the most exotic label. No way is a Target size 2. Just another lie.

gncbiz said...

Oh, yeah. I forgot. TLC has posted a new blog by Kate about full day school for the first time starting in 2 weeks, a moment she has dreamed about since she was on bedrest. It is dated today but I KNOW this is verbatum the post from last summer. Right down to some inane comment about Snow White and the 8 (please let it be 8 this time) dwarfs.

Admin, thanks for the great job you have done here. I enjoy your posts. You have done so many interesting things. When this is really all over, I will miss this blog site.

I have never been in an RV the size of Kate's in the show. But, I would like to think I would enjoy the shrunk-my-life experience on a vacation.

Anonymous said...

Call me crazy. I wish that the finale would be a question and answer with just the children.

Sam, I'll join you in those prayers. I lost a friend in the Towers and had a cousin in the Pentagon (thankfully, uninjured) on 9/11.

I agree with you that there's no way Kate's a size 2, or even a size 4. I'm small, or I was until I had to start taking steroids for an auto-immune disorder. At my heaviest, pre-steroids, I weighed 95#. I'm 5'1" and small boned. Sometimes I could wear a size 2 top if it was full cut, and Kate's a lot bustier than I am even now. She's a 6 or an 8 at least.

If Kate was freaking out about "full fat" creamer for her coffee, no wonder her skin and hair look so dull and lifeless. The human body needs 20 - 30 grams of fat a day to maintain healthy skin and hair. Moderation Kate, moderation.

I'd be careful about watching and increasing ratings over what is only PRESUMED to be the final hurrah, so to speak. I think they are testing the waters for something in the future - remember, any attention is money for TLC, even if her unpopular personality is the focus. That is how reality shows work. And because she is desperate, she would be quite happy to appear that way again if it means public attention for her and cash in hand.

As for a size 2 - ha ha! There is NO way. My nieces are professional models and Kate isn't even CLOSE to that size. How embarrassing.

Maggie said...

Kate has begged on every entertainment tv program for the past year for a man to date and marry. What man after watching just this episode would be interested in her. Kate sucked the air and fun out of every situation. She showed herself to be a bitch from hell. And sadly her kids behaved very badly.

Kate always twitters that she is so positive and strong. What a joke. She is negative and weak. She has no control of herself. And loves to control every situation and move of others. Kate twittered that when her critics and haters say something bad about her that she loves to prove them wrong. Well Kate, what happened? You had a golden opportunity to behave well but you blew it again. Kate you have not improved one bit in the past 6 years. It is a shame. Stop your twittering all the positive attitudes, platitudes, and quotes. Your attitude is disgusting especially since you have been given so much. It is all words and no action when it comes to you living a positive life.

If Kate has a dating show, men would only sign up for the money and fame. A healthly minded man COULD NOT be interested in her and her kids. It is a shame she blew great opportunties to present herself and her kids in a positive, fun, gracious way.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Maggie excellent post I agree 100%.

Also this ridiculous idea some of the sheeple have said that Kate isn't interested in sex because she wants to put her kids first and has all these morals is so completely ridiculous.........Kate has spent the better part of the past 18 months telling us how much she needs and wants a man. She's obsessed. She reminds me of boy crazy girls in high school, she won't shut up. She was willing to let her foot be licked and chase down a random stranger on the street she knew absolutely nothing about. Kate taking the high road when it comes to a man??? Are they blind? Baloney.

Had Kate not talked about a man and simply said my focus is my kids now I will consider a relationship later once they are older, I would be very out of line to question her. This is not the case whatsoever!

Donna said...

I don't care how much TLC throws Kate under the bus. She signed up for this. But did they have to do the same to Cara? That was very cruel. Kate (or TLC) sure didn't plan the trip for the kids' enjoyment.

Readerlady - I never thought of that dietary explanation. You got it. Her hair would be dull and dry. Skin, too. She is aging herself by restricting fat. It is obvious once you brought it up. Also, if it was one of the "fake" creamers, it is full of sugar and chemicals. Half n' Half would be better any day.

The size 2 comments. She is slim. Why does she need to fib? No way she could squish those boobs into any size 2.

She makes up life the way she thinks it should be. Saying it does not make it so. That goes for all the positive, uplifting quotes also. You gotta live it, not just say it.

Of course it's from last year. They were in full-day Kindergarten last year. This is not the first year they are in school full time. It's dated August 30, 2011 and she writes that the kids will start school in two weeks. School started LAST WEEK! How dumb do they think readers are?

What Kate's Twit-PR woman doesn't seem to get is that you have to actually DO a few good deeds, and PARTICIPATE in a few charity endeavors to get the good press. And 75% of Angie's charity work is never reported on, yet she still does it because she cares, and actually has a soul.

Reader Lady, I am so sorry for the loss of your friend, it's so hard to lose a love one or good friend to senseless violence. I can relate because my family experienced it and the killer was never caught.

Let the stupid show go out in a whimper, let the stupid woman wallow in her own self pity and self importance. Soon the only one who will look at her or even listen to her is the one who looks back at her in the mirror and she may not like what she sees.

Uh oh......did TLC just plagiarize Kate???

In most colleges you're not permitted to recycle an old term paper from last year and make it work for an assignment this year. Students have been severely punished for this.

That said I doubt Kate had anything to do with it, it's just TLC being lazy and not wanting to bother writing up a new post for her.

I totally agree. I am 5'7", as I think kate is, as well. When I was pregnant, I had hyperemesis and lost 20 lbs, getting down to 108lbs.

At that height and weight, I was in a size 4.

There is no way Kate weighs 108 ( like I was at ). She is at least in the 120's-130's, which, for me, I would be wearing a 6 or 8.

If she were shorter I could see it. But she's not.

Anonymous said...

Does she know that she could loose a lot more weight and still not be a traditional size 2? It isn't just about skinny. Bone size, rib cage width, hip span, height and her inflated bust -- all that will keep her in larger sizes. She is still a slim woman. She does not need to lie.

This Paige character is really nuts. I cannot imagine my 20 year old daughter spending any time twittering her life away w/ a Kate Gosselin. This girl really needs to get a grip on reality. I cannot believe that any parents have know idea how she spends her time. They must be as neglectful as Kate.

Wonder of the RV company donated their equipment for the exposure? If so, they got a really sour deal. She bashed the RV through the entire hour show. There was a lot of product placement during the packing. Several Quaker Oats products. I still don't understand opening all the boxes and sorting, but then I don't have 8 (count em) 8 kids.

Anonymous said...

On a two week trip with 11 children, I might have chosen to pack clothes...lots of clothes. I would plan on purchasing food along the way. Fruit for certain.

She didn't need dozens of plastic storage containers full of food. We never saw them in the RV. The shape of the containers would have made them take up more space than just folded clothes. Someone had to do laundry along the way. Her frustrations weren't necessary.

She was stuffing a large dark SUV. Was it part of the caravan also? Where did the crew stay and eat. Was Steve with them?

A normal family on an RV trip would not have all the drivers and assistants that were available to her.

So much of the story line does not make sense. Now I remember why I stopped watching this contrived show. I came back out of curiosity and I think I made a mistake!

Oh, no, I don't think so... I'd bet the farm she was at her "smallestish", a 10, right before she and Jon broke up and she was dizzy-in-lust with someone, either behind the camera or Boob Boy. She could hardly contain her schoolgirl crush self during the couch interviews, remember?

Imo, she's at least a 12 maybe even a 14 or a Women's 12/14 Plus Size with a lot of extra tailoring to contain those fake boobs and huge flat bottom/hips.

I think she believes certain lies and the size 2 is one of them.

Sizing Her Up said...

Does she know that she could loose a lot more weight and still not be a traditional size 2?

-------

Kate wears designer clothing. Many times they are sized smaller than traditional clothing. Probably makes the wealthy feel good and therefore, they buy more and spend more. It's totally possible that she fits into their size 4. However, if she bought off the rack at Sears, she'd wear a size 8.

Dallas Lady said...

I don't care what size she is, she's still a massive asshole. She'd be one at size 2 and she'd be one if she were a size 18.

Good riddance to bad garbage.

Prediction: she will never ever EVER have another life partner. Ever. She's said herself she wants someone to help her with the kids and the house. That's not a life partner, and that's certainly not a romantic partner.

With the way she acts (and all on film!), no man with more than two brain cells to rub together would want to be in the same hemisphere as this boner-killing joy-defeating nasty hag.

Damn, I am so out of the loop right now (been away). I've only skimmed the comments so far, but it sounds like last night was Kate at her worst. I saw that someone posted that the episode is on again at 2 am and I am tempted to set my DVR just to see for myself. The thing is, I never was a viewer of this show (I only checked it out when it was all over the place because of the divorce news). I don't know if I can even take watching her in an episode. I'd probably be screaming at my TV and getting aggravated for nothing. I'm not sure if my curiosity factor is worth all that.

OT, but I just wanted to say that I hope everyone made it through the hurricane okay. To those without power, I feel your pain, believe me. Thankfully, it's not too hot outside or too cold so we can live without air conditioning or heat. But, I know it sucks. I just hope everyone from this blog is safe and didn't sustain any damage! We lost power for just one day and a couple of sections of our big fence in the backyard got blown off. But, I'm so glad that was it. Other neighborhoods very close to us are under water. I have never been more thankful to be living on my small little mountain than I am now. I don't think I will ever move!

fidosmommy said...

I didn't watch, but am glad some did so I could read comments.

If Kate's attitude was that bad from the very start of the trip, I have to wonder if she had just been told her show was cancelled. That could account for a whole lot.

By the way, my husband and I were RV shopping about a year ago and looked at RVs in both those size ranges (they had two--one was a HUGE bus and the other one was still big, but not a bus).

That giant pretty dark-colored bus? Those range from $180,000 all the way up to $500,000. Now the one they were in was NOT on the highest end of that range (the half million dollar ones are *extremely* luxurious inside--like they look like a penthouse on wheels).

Still, those things are an arm and a leg to rent. I can't begin to imagine how much it must have cost TLC to rent those 2 or 3 RVs (plus an SUV or two?), pay the crew, pay the purse holder/child wrangler/servant, pay the nanny, pay the "friend," fly Kate and the kids out to MEET the RVs, pay to feed everyone three meals a day, Kate probably demanded new clothing, etc. Whew. I'm sure there are LOADS of expenses I'm not even thinking of.

She wasn't worth it. Never was. But yeah, those RVs cost a pretty penny to buy OR rent and I'm sure the rental company didn't appreciate the bad publicity with her badmouthing their RVs all over her sad little show. It's true a fridge door shouldn't come off, but those things are built really tough. I have to wonder what the hell happened that BOTH RVs had so many things go wrong and get damaged.

Ah, there's another expense! TLC probably didn't get any deposits back on the RVs. I did catch a clip of her dragging the vacuum across the rocks and I gasped. I know it's just a material item, but WHO THE HELL DOES THAT? That alone, that one little thing she did, is indicative of her general attitude in life: ungrateful. She was just dragging that thing across those rocks (nice work camera man, catching that up close), and walking fast and didn't give ONE shit about damaging that thing. Not one shit. Why? It wasn't hers. She doesn't care.

Kate Gosselin is a honey badger. Honey badger don't give a shit, honey badger just takes what it wants and has no regard for anyone else whatsoever:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r7wHMg5Yjg

Seriously, watch that video and replace "honey badger" with "Kate Gosselin" every time you hear it. HILARIOUS.

Maggie said...

This info is from another site: A person called the campground the Gosselins were staying and a lady on the phone told her that it was just mud that was deep down and the camera crew spent a good while digging it up from the creek so it would be readily available for the "mud playing scene". Very interesting! Note that when Kate approached the creek with the mud she makes a comment about not knowing what this is about. Yeah right, you liar. Also note everyone was dressed for the mud fight. No pretty dresses on the little girls. And I thought Kate took sick delight in mushing mud into Clay's face. She made negative comments about him on the show and I think she secretly targeted him to rub mud all over his face. And her saying that she loved him was with pure sarcasm and dripping with revenge.

The lady also said the Gosselin crew went trout fishing and horseback riding, but none of that made the show.

I think they spent many nights at a motel or nice cabins during their 14 day trip. I don't believe for a second they spent 14 nights in their rv's. What does everyone think of the stay overs in the motels?

Honestly, does the number on the label really mean that much? It seems to me that if a garment fits you properly it doesn't matter if it's a 2, 4, 6 or whatever. Since different designers and different manufacturers have different ideas of what size a 4 is, it becomes even more ludicrous to think it's an important issue.

Kate might want to rethink some of her too-tight
tops and jeans and quit worrying about what number is on the label.

Do you think Kate's going to announce her brassiere size next? What else does she think we need to know about her? Sheesh.

Seriously. I have never seen someone so full of themselves and so clueless at the same time. Edited that way? Well, she gave them the ammunition if that was the case. Personally, I think that her editing has been favorable until just now. Gloves were off during this show.

She looked just awful in the mornings during the show. All puffy and droop eyed. She said she didn't sleep but she looked more like someone who took a pill to knock themselves out. She looked manic during the mud slinging event. Did anyone notice that some of her kids looked horrified and confused. They did not all participate. Probably fearful of the after-shock.

I thought I saw store-bought coffee in her had one morning. They were close to civilization. All that pre-packing was not necessary. Supplies could have been purchased along the way.

Just stuff I noticed. I am appreciating all the other posts. Thanks.

In some universities, a student may be permitted to do this if he/she asks permission from the professor, is honest about when it was done, and it can be shown that it is all the work of the student. This can be confirmed by submitting it to turnitin.com.

If a student worked exceptionally hard on it, and it fits the theme of the current assignment, and more research is done on the subject, I have permitted students to use the paper as the foundation for additional research with no penalty.

TLC's recycling of the blog may be their way of thumbing their nose at her a final time to show that it's over for her. One last shove of their finger!

After reading all these comments about nasty ol' Kate, I had to look up the episode on You Tube. I have not seen an episode in years and finally curiosity got the best of me. But wow, this show was just incredibly boring. I didn't even get that far into it--just to the point where they arrived to Mt. Rushmore and Kate the idiot kept insisting that FDR was one of the presidents represented there, then airhead that she is, when corrected she brushed it off and said "whatever" and that she knew it was "one of the Roosevelt guys" or something to that effect. Way to educate yourself and your children, who actually had it right to begin with. But anyway, I really couldn't watch it for one more minute. It was just so incredibly boring. Really, who are these people watching this crap? SNOOZEFEST.

Dallas Lady said...

hey jude, waaaaaay back when I used to watch the show (when Jon was on--and the only reason I watched was to see if he'd ever go off on her), my husband would walk through the room and say "oh you're watching BK again."

I had no idea what he meant. He explained that it stood for Boner Killer. It's a vulgar term, and it has nothing to do with appearance. He explained that no one would ever find her personality appealing on any level. Thus a boner killer. I thought it fit well and connected nicely to her ability to kill happiness and fun where ever it happens to exist.

Could be her rap name. KG BONA KILLA. Fun Slayer. Ok I'm getting silly and that means it's time for bed.

Anonymous said...

Annabanana - you are correct the content was basically boring. What kept me watching was the jaw-dropping behavior of Kate. Her immaturity and controlling demands kept my arm-chair analysis engaged.

You know what was different? Did anyone notice the lack of music?

Normally there's some music (at least from the clips I've seen here and there of the recent year or so). There are good transitions. This seemed to just have white text showing where they were and how many miles and days it had been (kind of ominous) and no jaunty happy music to intro each segment. Just the sound of Kate's MISERY AS SHE EXPLAINS HOW HORRIBLE THIS RV GULAG FROM HELL IS! I mean, you get to hear her bitching before you even SEE her in each segment.

HollyMo said...

One more thing before I go to bed...

I was just watching Ent. Tonight Canada and they interviewed Jason Priestley. One of the questions he was asked was would he ever consider a reality show, since Shannen Doherty and Tori Spelling are doing them. His answer (paraphrased) was that no, he wouldn't. He said it's hard for anyone to take you seriously after they've seen you in your boxers scratching your ass.

(Part 2 response)

I think some are bothered by others watching the final episodes because of their original intention for not watching in the first place - to end the further exploitation of the kids.

The reason I stopped watching was because of the kids, not because the show was boring or fake. My a-ha moment came on the first episode of Kate Plus 8 (Sextuplets' 6th birthday), when I heard Mady say, "I want to die." That's when I realized I was a participant in the exploitation of these kids, whether my viewership actually counted in the ratings or not. It was this blog and its fellow readers that opened my eyes and showed me how continuing to watch isn't helping but rather hurting the kids. I no longer wanted to participate in watching these kids self-destruct.

I've watched the Gosselins since the first special, so I understand the natural curiosity for those wanting to see how it will all end. This blog and Kate's tweets satisfy my curiosity, so I can't berate those who watch if I'm reading to see what happened. I just refuse to watch and give TLC and Kate the satisfaction of bumping up their ratings. It's the kids' future welfare that is more important to me than watching karma finally come to Kate and seeing the ugly drama unfold. I don't want to give TLC and Kate any hope for future specials.

Anyway, didn't watch (but may record the replay) and just wanted to say that although the ratings were up I think that maybe they were hoping for divorce show type ratings. TLC may have been sitting back watching to see if Kate would draw the viewers in and then they might talk to her about another show. Didn't happen. People are curious but most don't care enough to invest an hour of their time and really, TLC didn't care enough to send her on the talk show circuit again.

Well?? From Kate's history, there was ZERO editing.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

ZERO editing? You think that for a 1/2 hour show they simply film 22 minutes of footage and throw it on the air? All reality shows of this genre are edited. That's a given. And if you don't believe there is any editing going on to portray Kate in a certain way, perhaps Jon Gosselin can convince you otherwise. Here is a post-breakup quote from him:

"I was basically in a storybook for four years and didn't realize it because I was busy raising babies...I don't know if the marriage could have been salvaged or not, but TLC had a major role in that. I said a lot and they edited it out. It's always good cop, bad cop. Good cop good cop never sells. First, Kate was bad cop and I was the good guy, then it switched in the tabloids and then on TV.
...You're filming three days straight, and then it airs and it's 22 minutes of story. What you see was always conflict and there was never any resolve, so Kate looks like this mean person that never resolved anything. Same with me. It was all part of TLC's game and plan. I think this whole thing was played out in storybook form regardless of what TLC said. I think they had a master plan behind it. It's like those books in school where you can choose the ending. Exactly. They can edit it any way they want. They could do another five seasons with totally different storylines just based on the footage they have."

Something bothered me about a post where the writer thought we 'hated' Kate here. I want to say for myself, I don't watch her because of the way she treats the kids; I don't hate her, just her behavior.

She can go and get whatever job she wants to and I don't care; I still won't be watching her because of the way she was on the show.I don't think anyone hates her personally as none of us knows her.

She needs psychological help and I hope she gets it; she's hard to watch on tv as she comes across as such an abusive mother and so moody and miserable all the time.I hope no one hates her over anything I have said, but I have no control over that.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I love this blog because Admin. let's us vent and talk about our feelings and ideas, and there is nothing wrong with that! Thanks Admin. and good luck with this recap.

No one should feel bad if they happened to watch Kate unravelling on the show last night. We are still a free country last time I checked and to all the nay-sayers trying to make people feel bad I say, "bite me!"

The problem is if you never give them the good cop-bad cop footage in the first place, how can they edit you either way?

Kate gave them the footage of her being mean. She gave them the footage calling the children disgusting pigs. She gave them a ton of negative footage, an hour's worth (this episode was an hour) at least. She's given them hours and hours of "bad cop" footage.

No matter which way you cut the film, the fact is, Kate gave them the bad footage. If she never gave them bad footage, how can they edit her to be mean? There is a certain amount of personal responsibility here reality stars never seem to want to take--YOU SAID IT, YOU DID IT, it really is not as big of a deal as they make it out to be that they only pull your bad moments. If you don't want them to show bad moments, DON'T GIVE THEM THE FOOTAGE. Is Kate disputing she called her kids disgusting pigs? Or Collin anal? And on and on and on. Because I haven't heard her say that TLC dubbed her words or used an actor to make her do things.

It's like my church friend who was on Survivor. He gave them no bad footage, so there was no way to possibly spin him as the bad cop. Since good cop was boring, he simply was rarely shown on the show.

On a side note, I think Jon exaggerates how he was portrayed. There are no episodes I can recall where Jon looked truly awful. I recall some interviews with Kate trying to convince us what a terrible husband and father he was, but not a lot of good examples backing it up, so most of us weren't really falling for it. Once in a blue moon he would say something that made him look bad, but hardly enough to fill an episode.

Professor, I have to say I have a huge problem with allowing a student to reuse a paper.

The whole point of college is to learn lots of new and interesting things and to delve into new things. If you get lucky and happen to take two classes where a paper would squeeze into both of them (and this happens a lot), you get to reuse your paper? I don't think that's very fair to the other students, and the bottom line is, I don't think it's making best use of the class and professor to learn something you didn't know before. Like taking a cooking class but only choosing to cook recipes you are already an expert on--what a waste of your mind.

I have no problem on expanding on a topic and writing a new paper furthering a topic, but reusing a paper is wrong IMO.

My school had the rule as most do, people got busted for it, and I thought it was a good rule. Why should I bust my butt to learn some new topic and write a paper on it when the guy next to me is playing reuse, recycle with his from last semester?

I watched the episode last night since I figured she's done so my watching isn't going to help her at all.
Anyway the episode just really pissed me off to the point I wanted to cry over the fact how miserable the kids must be. Poor Ashley too, I'm scared to see how bad it turned out next week.
Anyway I am curious to see what you think of the episode, Admin.

Off topic sorta, just when you think TLC can't get more offensive they give us Big and Sexy. I'm watching the pilot and I am just disgusted by it. Yeah lets glamorize a unhealthy body weight by giving 5 fat girls their own reality show who refuse to diet and get healthy, claiming to be role models. If they really want to be role models they'd get healthy and lose the weight.

Paleoanthropology Prof said...

"Professor, I have to say I have a huge problem with allowing a student to reuse a paper."

------

Not reuse an entire paper, but build a foundation on research that was already done. If a student has a passion for a subject, researched it, wrote a paper on it, and has a sincere desire to learn more about the subject, I have no problem if that student uses part of that paper with appropriate citations as an inclusion in another paper on the same subject.

However, to use a entire paper because he thinks it fits the bill for another class, in another year, is not acceptable. I agree with your opinion. Recycling papers for the sake of getting out of writing a paper certainly is not what higher education is all about. In the end, while the student thinks he may be pulling a fast one on the professor, it's the student who is missing out on the academic offerings of the university.

I once had a student whose brother was two years ahead of him at the same university. There were peculiarities in his style of writing that I had remembered. The student grabbed his brother's paper and submitted it as his own. Students sometimes think that professors' brain cells disintegrate over time and educators become senile. Truth is, many of them have the memories of elephants! Of course, as an undergraduate student, I could have sworn that senility was a prerequisite for becoming a professor! I knew quite a few of them who I thought should have been put out to pasture.

Speaking of pastures, do the sheeple have a dictionary/instruction manual that is unique to them?

As usual with these lingering folks my words get twisted around. I never said Russell Armstrong didn't create the footage they showed. What was said was that reality tv shows shouldn't be delving into people's lives like this. This goes for Kate as good as it goes for Russell in my book, only difference is Kate didn't commit suicide after TLC has been throwing her under the bus, but it could have easily been her. Or Jon!

Of course we all have our bad moments. We have the good sense not to put ourselves on reality shows and risk those moments being filmed. But we all know there are those that do consent and I think reality shows take advantage of them. It's not an all or nothing for me. Reality shows shouldn't exploit people, but people shouldn't consent to it either. I never said reality shows are solely responsible for Russell's death. I repeatedly said IN PART.

I was told here Kate called the kids disgusting pigs. I have not seen the episode yet as I only watch them once for the recap, however if that's not true then a mistake was made and I relied on it. There are plenty of other foul things Kate has done if she didn't say that.

Guess what, for as foul as Kate is, I think TLC has taken advantage of her and I think TLC has been evil toward her and I think they are very lucky there wasn't very terrible consequences. I know there are people here who think Kate deserves every bit of it. Maybe so, but I have always been of the opinion no matter how bad Kate is, she did not deserve the treatment TLC gave her much less her kids. I have also expressed my disgust at TLC toward Kate about 100 times.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Well we'll have to agree to disagree on reusing even part of a paper but the original statement was just a joke about Kate reusing a blog from last year.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Also anonymous, I am not disputing that Ashley and Jamie may have come across poorly. I don't get what your point is as I never said they weren't. People are often edited down to only their bad moments, it doesn't change the fact that Ashley, Jamie AND Kate each did their bad moments all on their own. My point being I think it's wrong to do that to people but it doesn't mean you can't disagree with their bad moments or suggest that's how they really are.

This is not an all or nothing argument.

If you are referring to me because of the comment I posted earlier, which is also below, I thought that one of the rules on this blog is to respect others opinions. If you thought I was being holier than thou, maybe you need to look inside your self for your own motive for posting. I had reflected back to the wording I used in my comments and realized I could have been kinder. In the refereed comment, I never called out anyone, or re-posted their comments. My comment was just that, mine. I pointed out TLC's manipulations and possible motives and how I felt about them.
I want to thank Administrator and No Regrets for your kindness and suggestion on how to get my post to go through. So far nothing has worked. A partial re-post I believe NGGAL51 may have been referring to is, JUST SAYIN said:

Would I say shame on you, or would I excuse them because of what their mother did to them. My question to myself now is, should I say shame on Kate, or have a little more compassion because I don't know fully her childhood make up.

Dallas Lady: TLC probably didn't get any deposits back on the RVs. I did catch a clip of her dragging the vacuum across the rocks and I gasped. I know it's just a material item, but WHO THE HELL DOES THAT? That alone, that one little thing she did, is indicative of her general attitude in life: ungrateful.
______________________________________

SPOT ON! That one incident told anyone watching everything they ever needed to know to realize how despicable Kate is. I was appalled watching that...it wasn't her property, she resented having to get the vacuum cleaner herself, so, like the brat she is, she threw a tantrum and stomped back to the RV dragging it over the jagged rocks. That was a very light-weight vacuum...so easy to pick up and carry a few feet. I have a heavy vacuum that I carried in for repairs last week and I had to carry it a heckuva lot further than that.

Check out the demographics of the Roloff's shows:

Little People Big World (8pm)
- 1.773 million viewers
- 1.2/2 HH
- 0.6/2 A18-49

Little People Big World (8:30pm)
- 2.238 million viewers
- 1.5/2 HH
- 0.8/2 A18-49

Did Kate's ever reach 0.6 let alone 0.8? It's not difficult to learn from Kate's tweeters who her fans are; a very large number of tweenies and teens and also people who live in other countries, two groups that advertisers are not as interested to have as viewers as the 18-49 age group.

Kate has a very small number of devoted fans and judging by the now disappeared petitions not that many fans were interested in going to the trouble to sign them.

The rate of increase of her followers is suspect making me, for one, think followers are being bought and one spike in numbers was due to Kate mentioning the Taylor Swift concert that brought on a huge number of "followers" all in the tween and teen category. Many who comment only ask for Kate to follow them and then move on; they're kids who only want to get a huge number of followers (like a popularity contest). A fairly large number of followers have never even tweeted.

I'm not too worried about Kate's show coming back. My opinion only, but it seems to me TLC would be better off doing an occasional special which might bring in a decent ratings # and would be a lot cheaper than having to send Kate off on hugely expensive trips to garner a couple thousand more viewers; making episodes of Kate+8 at home has been done…”x150” episodes.

Paleoanthropology prof-
WOW my favorite subject of ALL time- paleoanthropology!!! I actually started out in my 1st 2 years in college going that route after my second anthropology class- I fell completely in love with the subject, if that is possible- LOL!!
But due to circumstances- and joining the miltary- I ended up getting my degree in criminal justice, now which I am in grad school for, but I sometimes daydream about the day I get out of the military and going back to school and at least getting a degree in archaeology, next best thing. Just don't know how many 40-somethings pursue that field :D
Anyway, my school doesn't allow reusing papers, in whole or part, too bad...and turnitin.com, what a site, I don't know how colleges prevented plagiarism before that site.
Sorry for the OT, but seriously, how many people do you come across in life that are paleoanthropologists? Guess I shall get back to homework, LOL.

Always read this blog have never posted before. I watched the show last night, I was SO curious about it from the comments. What struck me more than Kate's behaviour was how rude and snide Ashley and Jamie were. They ganged up on Kate, they were rude toward her and about her and behaved poorly in front of the kids on their stupid "party bus". Even calling the other RV the "boring bus" was childish. They were like mean girls. These kids have no role models. Sad.

Anyone on a reality show is being exploited. Anyone who agrees to do a reality show is putting themselves at risk as being spun as an idiot. The difference is that adults can make that decision, and the Gosselin kids did not have that option. I was never particularly upset by the "baby poopy" episodes. Babies poop, get constipated, etc. and everybody knows it. I never thought those early episodes with the tups would make them bully fodder at their day school, any more than anything else. However, documenting bad preteen behavior is a little different. Cara really looked emotionally unstable in that RV episode, and Mady still hasn't lived down her previous bad behavior. That could have negative consequences, if either of them wants to go to get into some team or club that's highly selective, and (So you want to be on the Ski-ettes, Miss Gosselin? You need to be tough. Are you going to cry if you don't get the right seat on the bus? So, Mady, you want to try out for Pennsylvania Community Theater? Are you going to throw a fit if you don't get the part you want? Are you going to hit the other cast members?) Even if Kate were the nicest woman on Earth, it's time to pull the plug on this show. The kids are just getting too old.

As for those fat girls on Big and Sexy: What would you prefer them to do, hide under a rock until they lose 100 lb? Only thin people can date and go to nightclubs? If people with a higher risk for heart disease can't be shown on television, let's not show any sports, either. These conditioned athletes will have had several arthroscopic surgeries for all of their injuries by the time an overweight person needs a ballooning of the arteries.

When I was in graduate school, I was allowed to more fully develop a topic I had researched extensively as an undergrad. I don't think it is that uncommon in academic writing where a person may find an area of interest that becomes their own area of expertise. I've seen peer-reviewed papers where authors cited earlier publications. The benefit of using earlier research as a starting point was that I could get a level of depth in my synthesis on the second paper that I wouldn't get if I'd started with a new topic. My professor was well aware of what I did and there were actually two different papers when I finished. However, a site like turnitin would have probably pegged the paper as potentially recycled work.

I just watched the episode on youtube. Wow is all I can say. Kate is in for some major troubles when these kids grow up. The sheeple and Kate might not believe it, but these kids have some bad attitude.
How old is Cara? Does she behave at school like this as well? I am not only talking about the "Clay incident" ...
I am glad that these kids will no longer have a camera crew following them around. That the free vacations (on which there seems to be only drama anyways) will stop. Too bad that all America (the entire world for that matter) could see them grow up, the DVDs are available in almost every dollar store. Their mother freaks out when people take pictures of them?! Is she for real. She is the one that signed up for this reality freak show, not those kids. Be glad people still want to take pictures, because that time will be over soon ... or maybe not ... cause fast forward a few years and I am sure we will hear a lot of negative stories about those kids floating the internet. There is no way all 8 of them will come out of a youth like they had unharmed.

Oh and Ashley ... it looks like she left because she couldn't take Kate anymore. Good on her for leaving ... She was being treated as the servant anyways. It is all about Kate ... ha! Cannot wait till the day she wakes up and realizes what a JOKE she is!

Don't try to figure out Kate too much or you'll hurt yourself, but I took that insane comment to mean that it's a long walk back so it's going to be awhile until we eat, but the sooner you get moving the sooner we can eat.

White water rafting used to sort of be the thing to do with big groups when I was a kid. Almost everyone seems to like it at that age. I'm trying to think back the places I've done it--West Virginia for sure, and I think Vermont as well. But I always remember the adults bringing along a couple packs of snacks. In fact in West Virginia the tour guide had some coolers with lunch, it was part of the package.
Rafting makes you HUNGRY.

Also? I don't remember a single adult on these trips who wasn't always saying stuff like, Good job guys, paddle hard, if you want to swim go ahead get in there! You can do it! You look great out there! That was fun wasn't it!

I think I didn't realize until now how NORMAL the adults in my life were.
