Discussion thread: 'The Keepers'; and the Duggars file a really stupid lawsuit

Sister Cathy, who was murdered for trying to protect children from abuse.
We've been riveted to The Keepers since it first appeared on Netflix this week. Equally heartbreaking and painstakingly detailed, The Keepers tells the story of Jean Wehner, who was molested by a priest at her high school in the 60's. But this is not just another all too common tale of betrayal and sexual abuse towards children at the hands of the Catholic church. This one is also about Jean's beloved young teacher, a nun named Sister Cathy, who ended up murdered around about the same time she discovered some of her students were being abused. When Cathy set about to stand up for her students, one of the most shocking cover-ups to come out of organized religion ensued.

The internet has been ablaze with amateur sleuths on this story for years, and now it comes to our screens. One review calls The Keepers, which has been compared to Making a Murderer, similar fare yet much more haunting, and that Sister Cathy's murder is a corner piece of a jigsaw puzzle. We agree. Discuss here.

In somewhat ironic timing, the Duggars this week filed a lawsuit against various government officials, protesting the release of police reports and other documents in connection with Josh Duggar's molestation of several of his younger sisters many years ago. The City of Springdale quickly responded with a press release, denying any wrong-doing and pointing out that the documents were heavily redacted, and protesting the use of tax dollars for this scheme.

If there's one thing that comes through in The Keepers, it's that keeping the story quiet about sexual abuse makes it worse, not better. In fact, because Jean and others kept quiet until the early 90's, one perpetrator continued to sit on the pulpit for decades. He was finally removed when Jean decided she must come forward no matter how painful. Because people thought sexual abuse must be kept quiet, Sister Cathy, who did not think so, was murdered. Disclosure and public acknowledgement of abuse is how we solve this problem, Jim Bob, not more covering up. Perhaps if Jean lived in a society in which sexual abuse was not regarded as something so shameful and private, she wouldn't have been so reluctant to come forward, and Sister Cathy would still be alive. Shame on you.

I stayed up through the night watching "The Keepers".

It exploded Catholic school memories into my mind. I am the age of most of the participants in the documentary.

Between my Saturday activities, I watched "The Keepers" a second time.

Jane Doe and Jane Roe are strong and heroic women. The two ladies who began a true crime search peeled back layers of a larger story.

There is so much to say about this documentary and at the same time there are no words.

My emotions were so raw that at 3:00AM I was in my attic looking for a box of old photos. I found the few pictures I needed to see. Photographic proof of parochial school years. Harsh years.

Small community. Small classes. Big church. I was compelled to look into the faces of classmates. We had our stories and secrets.

I am not exaggerating when I say "The Keepers" turned my head inside out. It will take awhile to put thoughts back into the past.

I got up, walked around then sat down and started watching again. I was so moved, angry and frustrated that my emotions were raw as well. The interviews with the dentist really got to me. Don't want to say too much and ruin it for anyone who hasn't watched.

It was an excellent documentary, in the same category as Making a Murderer. I have so much admiration for those who can put together such powerful programs.

Agree, agree. Excellent, excellent.

I haven't had a documentary reach deep down into my heart and yank it from my chest, twisting it, since The Farmer's Wife.

We have only scratched the surface of doing a better job protecting our children from abuse. Go away, Jim Bob. You are not of this era.

I love the photo in the post of Sister Cathy, one of the few that seems to exist of her teaching. I imagine she is looking at a student or maybe the whole class, her whole face lighting up because she loves to teach so much, likes being around eager bright high school kids in a competitive school. And we know now that it wasn't just teaching she loved, but she really cared about her students and did not want anyone to hurt them no matter how big and powerful the perps were. She gave her life for her.

Frankly, she's a martyr for the cause.

______________

Being the pessimist that I am, or maybe a pragmatist, when you have to fight a multi-billion dollar corporation that sweeps its problems under the rug I don't see much happening with regard to Priest/child abuse. Of course I'm talking about cover ups and justice. justice. Prevention? When children are terrified with threats, how do we deal with that?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I firmly believe one of the only ways to put a stop to some of this is to ensure that we are raising children in a culture where not only is it supported to disclose sex abuse but we demand that it be disclosed. Only when children are encouraged to disclose it is freely as they would disclose what they had for lunch that day, that's when priests start to get too scared to attempt it. There has actually been an incredible decline in sex abuse incidents in the past 20 years. We're talking about a 50% decline. And they've run through the numbers with a fine tooth comb, and research believe that there actually less incidence of sex abuse. Not that people are just not reporting it. I think perpetrators are getting too scared to attempt it for fear of being discovered. We have made huge strides.

Caution: It is full of what should be labeled spoilers.

However, you can read every word -- including names, dates and details -- and still NOT understand the power of the documentary.

It is a documentary full of facial close ups that allow you to see deep into the eyes of the story teller.

It is a documentary so well done with ample "stage-setting" involving leaves dripping rain water and geese landing on misty ponds. Yellowed newspaper clippings and wrinkled old photos provide detailed support for memories that are fading into old age.

I watched a couple hours of The Keepers last night with my DIL, but it got too emotional for her. I think it hit close to home--she went to that school. This wasn't just a ghost story whispered about in the halls, this was an enormous tragedy that really happened. We're taking a break. I'm going to watch more today, and she wants to watch the rest when she's ready.

Interesting how Jim Boob's lawyer said they are hoping for a "settlement" of 12-15M. Not to be awarded that in a court of law, but a settlement. What makes them think they can bully the city into just handing them the money? They are making this as public as possible, thinking that publicity will force the city to hand them money to shut them up. Bet they weren't expecting city officials to make a statement defending themselves. It sounds like the Duggars have been trying to cash in on this for a long time, and this is just their latest attempt. I'm sure, in their minds, the release of this information caused JB and M to lose their show, and they want that money any way they can get it. Right now it's just the daughters, which means JB doesn't have complete control of the money. That must drive him crazy. So he lashes out--not at the perpetrator (Josh), but at the city. Good luck with that, Jim Boob.

I couldn't watch The Keepers straight through, I had to take breaks after every couple of episodes to remind myself of my real world. Everything about that school, that kind of religious clannishness, the unquestioning belief in priests and, to a lesser degree, nuns was straight out of my childhood. Even the uniforms and lockers in the hallways were so familiar it shot me right back to my childhood. As far as I know, nothing like the horror at Keough went on at my catholic high school, but I can easily see how it could have. I do see a connection between the Keough tragedy and the Duggar travesty - both occurred, were excused and were covered up in the name of religion.

Yes, there are some bare bones similarities, however, the Keepers was a magnificently crafted docudrama that covered a lot of ground. I remember, at one point when I'd finished watching and had collected my thoughts somewhat, "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." There are many layers to that powerful story.

My take away from the article was what the church alsways does, either deny it ever happened, or if admitting it had happened, have an attitude of "whats the big desl?" or worst case know it happened and try to sweep in under the rug while trying to appear as if the church has clean hands, Whats scurrilous is not the documentary but the churchs historical and present day attitude towards child sex abuse while those very same children were entrusted to their care and safekeeping!! The church will never learn or change which is why I stopped attending mass or being a practicing catholic going years ago.

"By 1992, Catholic dioceses in the U.S. had paid out four hundred million dollars to settle hundreds of molestation cases. These financial settlements were reached largely to keep the victims quiet: in almost all cases, the documents were sealed and the victims signed a non-disclosure agreement."

When Jon left the show Discovery made sure he was financially punished. They made sure that when they were done he had no money, continued conflict with his ex, and sadly I think made it difficult for him to visit his children. All for wanting or refusing to continue a facade of being a happy married couple on TV.
Yet Jim Bob and Michelle have a son that molested his sisters and a non-family member then admitted to more infidelities, and Discovery doesn't sue them? While Jim Bob claims they have suffered damages didn't the network lose tons of revenue? Isn't what Josh has done a breach of the morality clause they have in place, or did they know this ahead of time?
To me it seems that the network is saying you can be a deplorable human being just make sure you do not quit filming!

Both stories are about children being molested and the resulting coverup. Why is one more important than the other?

In any case, even if they weren't related, we prefer one thread at a time here. It makes the conversation much easier to follow. There is a semi-colon between the two stories, indicating they are two distinct, though in my opinion, related stories.

Thats not homesexuality, thats pedophilia. And his heinous acts were only only made public years after they occurred and after numerous reassignments to different catholic schools/parishes while also attaining the esteemed position of Monsignor. How does one explain that???

&&&

This may be a spoiler alert so scroll by if you haven't seen it yet. But they interviewed the treatment center where one of the priests was sent. And he dropped a bombshell. He confirmed that yes several priests were sent to the center for treatment decades ago, but that he was told they had depression. He was not told they were there for sexual molestation, and he was not given their file that would have detailed the incidents. When he asked a priest why he thought he was there (seemingly expecting him to say for depression) the priest was honest and said because he molested a 14 year old. The treatment provider was basically like, WHAT?! He then confronted the church and said look I'm happy to provide treatment for sexual abuse but I need to know that's why you're sending this patient here and I want their whole file sent with them so I know what they even did. The church then blackballed him, never sending another priest there again.

The treatment centers were always a joke anyway, but now to find out that at least some of the priests sent there never disclosed why they were there, yet coming back out and claiming they were treated for sexual abuse, is out of this world. This documentary is dropping some even more horrific bombshells than we already knew.

dren have been the main victims of priestly sexual abuse.

Fact: Since more than 95 percent of all the victims of priestly sexual abuse, as reported by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, are not prepubescent, that means that adolescents have been the primary victims.

&&&&

Oh my god. Even their first FAQ is absurd. First of all, adolescents ARE children. And what does it matter whether the victim is 5 or 15? Neither can consent. Any priest who takes advantage of a minor is sick. Are they implying that older kids are somehow consenting or that it's not as bad if he or she is 15? Arguably, it can be worse to be molested when you're older. Little children really don't seem to realize it's wrong, at least not until decades later. Older kids know when it's happening something is off, not right, but feel powerless to stop it and seem to go through very complex emotions over it. They can feel much more haunted for many more years before disclosing it because they had much more awareness at the time.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Myth: The Church’s repressive teachings on sexuality are the problem.

Fact: It was liberals outside the Church who pushed for the sexual revolution, and it was liberals in the Church who abetted the revolution in the seminaries. Moreover, it was liberals who promoted therapy as the way to deal with molesters, instead of using punitive measures.

&&&&

Ha, look at this one. They're attacking you liberals, blaming you for their pedophilia. They blame you for being so soft and making them do things like therapy and yoga and drink green juice.

WTF! Yes, the liberals made you do it.....These people are nuts!

I had a very cookie cutter public school, non-religious school experience throughout childhood, where my teachers were kind and trustworthy and never put us in compromising or uncomfortable situations, but it's interesting to me how so many people seem to be touched just seeing all the similarities between their parochial school and the one in the film. Fortunately, and I count my blessings more and more these days, my high school experience bore much more of a resemblance to Mr. Holland's Opus, than Keough.

Even if a student was never abused at school, a lot of people have some bad memories here and there of unjust or unreasonable things that happened at school either at the hands of students or teachers. This doc seems to have hit all the right notes in terms of highlighting how innocent and carefree that time in your life is, how we all want that Mr. Holland experience during those precious years, and how jolting it is to young people when someone disturbs that.

I agree--the Duggars don't look at Josh's molestation as a family matter. They show no interest or concern for the trauma to their daughters. It's all about the money they have lost as a result of the story getting out. That shows where their true priorities lie. If they truly believe (as they always said) that children are a gift from God, then they should protect and nurture those gifts. But somehow, their "gifts from God" are less important than the money they could make by exploiting those "gifts". The girls still have a show. They are making money for their own families. JB is outraged that the money does not come to him. It's not "his" show any longer, he is not in charge of the cash, and that drives him crazy. If it were any other parent, it would drive him/her crazy to think of what happened to their precious daughters.

Poorly played on the Duggar's part. They're NOT going to just write a check. Idiots. The press release from the city reassured me. They're not going to just hand over taxpayer dollars to this money hungry family, a family even willing to make a buck off their children's molestations. The city knows what's up.

The city knows the city did the right thing disclosing this, and that the public backs them up, and is willing to fight this. Good on them.

The love they had for their teacher, and the guilt some feel over her death, was palpable. You just want to hug them and say that was NOT your fault!!!

TLC probably just went to them and offered the same contract that their parents had. JB and M did they same thing Kate did--they set themselves up in a lifestyle that would be difficult to maintain without a show. They even have a private plane! Milo wants attention and sympathy as much as a manipulative teenager. She laments the lack of response to her social media. Her social media posts are probably not that interesting, first of all. Second of all, there is something wrong with you if you are measuring your self worth by your likes.

If someone is not getting responses on the internet and they find this troubling, I suggest they pick up the phone and call their friends and family, text them, swing by. Set up a date with them, put the phone away and just enjoy being out in the community. You get as much as you give out of relationships, and I've found that many people simply have difficulty engaging primarily over social media. You have to reach out some other way or lose the connection and you can't take it personally because they honestly haven't even checked instagram in days.

It's that old saying maybe the reason you haven't found Mrs. Wright is because you're not Mr. Right. Maybe the reason Milo isn't getting much love back is because she doesn't give it well herself. Hounding and pestering and being obnoxious is not love.

Kate's "job" is staying famous and keeping herself and her children on tv and in the media.
I truly believe Kate sees her beauty regime and treatments, spending hours scouring her name on the internet, posting on social media and yapping on her iPhone trying to get more press to be "work".
I do believe that years ago, when J+K+8 was HUGE and they were filming nonstop, that she and Jon were truly incredibly busy with the production and promotion of their show.
She's just not filming or making media appearances or book tours all that much anymore. Filming is condensed into as little time as possible.

They've filmed a mere handful of episodes over the past 18 months. What, pray tell, is she doing with herself the rest of the time that is "more than" full time? Or is she talking about all the time she spends on the internet trolling for freebies.

Kate doesn't even have Coupon Cabin or a part-time blogging job anymore. She has not been active on her own blog at all.
What a bunch of b.s. that she's got no time to go back to work part-time.
Kate will always have an excuse. She is done with nursing, and that's fine, just be honest that you wouldn't be caught dead doing it anymore.
100% it's for the best that Kate Gosselin never practice nursing directly or indirectly with human beings ever again.

For working more than full time she sure doesn't have much to show for herself. I would expect someone working full time would fix their web site. And while she's in one salon, she sees a picture of herself coming through the fax machine, warning them about her! I think that's what it must be like for TFW.

So funny that K8 thinks she's working "more than full-time." Obviously, she counts motherhood as one career, but the second? Do 8 episodes in 18 or so months really count as a job, LOL?

The Busbys, OTOH, sound like they're in the midst of the full-on TLC treatment. They posted on their Buzz World page on May 11:

"This pretty much sums up the past week perfectly in our home. It has been one of the busiest weeks that we have had since filming has started. We have been working on a MAJOR marketing campaign for the show that will be seen on nearly every channel and every major magazine. The Busbys are going to be all over the place pretty soon. I bet the Duggars have been trying to get money from the defendants they listed for some time but came up against the statute of limitations; one of the key dates they mention in the lawsuit, I think the publishing of the story date, was May 20, 2015. So if its a 2 year statute of limitations, they filed just before the deadline on that. That's how a lot of cases work; negotiations are going nowhere because the other party won't negotiate at all and you have to file to protect the statute deadline. Sometimes the filing of a suit will spark some action by the other side, sometimes not. Based on the city's response, I'd say they don't want to participate in negotiations at all!

You know what I'm really going to be curious about when the Duggar's lawsuit goes forward? Just how much their famewhore propensity to live their lives in the public eye affects their case.

Yahoo has an article about Jessa's open love letter to her husband for his 22nd birthday. In it, she reminisces about being in her dotage at age 20, gazing upon his 17-year old hunkiness, wondering if he thought her and her shriveled, moth-eaten eggs were too old for him.

Frrrrrricking yuck!

"I'd found out your age, and calculated that I was 2 1/2 years older than you. Surely he wouldn't be interested in an older gal, I reasoned. He's a teenager, and I'm already twenty!"

Most responses are scathing and point out the hypocrisy of posting such private, highly personal things publicly, while trying to sue for millions for the FOIA release with REDACTED names.

I would bet that if Kate did manage to get some interest from Food Network (remember she tried to court them?), the fact that she could not offer the usual cast of characters would have sunk her.

&&&&&&&&&&&

FlimsyFlamsy, I think you're right about that. This is definitely the first actual confirmation TFW has given that she has no plans to ever be a nurse again. I look forward to seeing what she says when the kids are all grown and gone. What will be her "job" and excuse then, when TLC is gone and so are the kids? Heck, she might as well admit that she's "retired" in her fifties and doesn't have to work since she made so much much money exploiting and working her kids their entire lives.

Like you, I'd love to know what she considers working "more than" full time. She has more free time than any mother I've ever known, and that includes mothers who work outside the home and those who don't. Unlike other moms, she's never been a room parent who helps plan class parties, a parent who volunteers to help out at various school events, a parent who goes on field trips, a busy parent who spends hours and hours each week shuttling the kids back and forth to the various sports and activities, (practices, games both near and far, music lessons, play rehearsals, etc). She also spends far less time than most parents actually going places and doing things with her kids. She's almost exclusively house bound. Plus, we all know how much help she has.

Also, unlike most people her age, she has no responsibilities with regard to her parents. She spends zero time visiting them, helping them with things around the house, or taking them to doctors' appointments. She also has no demands on her time for ANY family events like most of us have, primarily on weekends. She has 52 free weekends a year since she has NO family celebrations to attend like birthday parties, graduation parties, weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, christenings, holiday gatherings, heck, even backyard barbecues.

She has a TON of free time in her lonely, sad, pathetic life.

____

It must have seriously rocked her world when Collin had to leave LCDS. OMG, ANOTHER SCHEDULE! She had it made in the shade with 8 kids at one school for the entirety of their schooling; in fact, that was kind of a prerequisite for this TV life she insisted on having. Without the same vacations, the show would be that much harder to do. No wonder she seems not at all perturbed at his absence. The Gardners remind me most of Jon and Kate. They grift everything they can, the mom will do anything to get out of caring for the girls, they are constantly on "date nights" and they do not discipline the girls and feed them junk all the time. They are entitled: ex. the dad was outraged that McDs wouldn't allow him to order through the drive through on FOOT, with the four girls in a WAGON (can you imagine if a car came speeding and hurt him or the girls?), the mom recently spend mother's day...away from the tiny people she mothered and so on. They didn't buy a fourth high chair, they just hinted until someone donated it. I don't know about the busbys but the Gardners are disgusting. They film the girls both on the YT channel and TLC.

I wonder if Kate has control over bringing Collin home. At this point, people are going to question wth could be so wrong with this young boy that he has to be separated from his family and/or institutionalized for over a year.
Watching Kate giddy over her dogs, on vacation after vacation, throwing yet another birthday party for the tups without Collin just can't sit well with anyone who has a conscience and moral compass.
It's not like Collin is severely autistic or has some profound developmental disability which made it impossible to care for him at home. He seemed like a pretty normal kid, maybe on the spectrum?, with some behavioral issues that needed to be addressed.
Never in my wildest dreams, when I heard he got kicked out of LDS, did I think he needed to be cared for outside the home until adulthood.
At this point, I don't think Kate will bring him back unless she realizes that the public will totally turn on her and she'll lose her show unless Collin comes back.

Rumor is that she's pregnant. Not sure I believe that. I think the courtship will be shown on Counting On this summer so maybe they want to end the season with a wedding for the sake of ratings. I get 'news blurbs' about the Duggars across my FB feed--supposedly Jinger is pregnant with a girl and due December 16th. JimBoob and clan don't take to twitter/Instagram to tease the fans like KatieIrene, but they pick and choose what they share when it suits them.

I think they're running out of courtships and weddings since the older boys aren't currently courting. JimBoob must miss the appearances on the Today Show for the big reveals about the latest pregnancy and such.

I read somewhere that they put Joy's b'day as the date on the wedding-present registry, as they had to put something and no doubt did not want to divulge the real date. Rumor is it's happening imminently. I saw some comments about the gift list including lots of power tools, which some speculate will go straight to the parents instead of the happy couple. Anyone who doesn't think the Duggar weddings/pregnancies are not big business for all involved is deluding her/himself.

I think that if People sold well with Kate and kids on the cover, they would do another one whether C was there or not. They'd just add a teaser on the cover saying there was an update on his situation inside. I think the magazines with the Gs just don't sell all that well, especially now that C is gone. People are losing interest. She didn't even score a couple minutes on one of those Access Hollywood-type shows. Nobody was interested. The public has spoken.

I find it laughable that she thinks she has 8 times the work since there are 8 kids. I spent years shuttling kids to baseball, football, rugby, lacrosse, music lessons, drama, play practice, math competitions, science fairs, and even one who did some TV stuff (that son has long since lost interest in TV and is a pre-med student now). It's a huge job, but having accomplished, well-rounded kids is well worth the effort. Not that Kate would know. I don't get the idea that having well-rounded kids is part of her plan.

Just to paint a more vivid picture(and because I'm stunned and need to share this with you): Gardner Squad Mom (Ashely) just spend a week at Disney World. Alone. While dad stayed at home with the 4 girls(who are old enough to enjoy at least the smaller rides and the atmosphere at disney). What kind of mother goes to disney and leaves the kids at home?

RoxyHelen said...

So many wrong things with all these people(Duggars, K Gosselin, Gardners, Busbys-based on what you're saying)...Notice how the decent ones get cancelled from TLC or are never even given a show in the first place. Remember the other family with sextuplets? The ones who had two sets of twins as well? Their kid were pretty polite, they adressed each other respectfully, the parents didn't treat each other like Jon and Kate.Table for twelve was it? They got cancelled after two seasons I think. I remember actually enjoying watching their show but I guess it wasn't controversial enough. Their kids were always encouraged to be independent and the dad still worked, mom took care of 10 kids, one of whom had special needs by the way. That little girl Rebecca had quite severe CP, certainly her challenges were bigger than Collin's yet I'm willing to bet that not once did it occur to that mom to send Rebecca away(sorry I cannot remember their last name). Why do you think people prefer watching Kate gosselin instead of that nice family?

RoxyHelen said...

Final comment I promise, I just remembered, the table for twelve family was the Hayes and when they celebrated the tups 5th(?) birthday, the kids had actual friends over and the mother kept saying that the guests should not have brought presents times 6. That she doesn't expect people to do that since it's not like they're twins, they're tups and it's a special situation. Can you remember Kate ever saying "oh God that's just too much stuff?"

There have been several episodes filmed around daughter Hazel's eye surgeries and I believe she was in the hospital once for a UTI?

And you can bet they've been affected by the fame, when the family went to NYC, they were walking together and one of them (I think the husband) said to the other "I can't believe this is our life now" and was quite giddy when he said it.

Had she asked me that, my answer would have been: You are someone who has more than enough, you are also someone public who could tell all these fans to send the gifts to children who unlike yours, who go on 5 luxury trips a year and get b*day extravaganzas, have never seen such toys and do not have winter coats at all, let alone such expensive ones.

-----------------

That's just depressing. Compare that to the McCaughey septuplets who all had jobs to pay for their phones and save up for college(for living I think, because they do have scholarships) who most likely are familiar with the word thank you. They are all off to college and not all of them are going to the same college(I believe they are split 3-2-2) and all have different career choices. My heart breaks a little because I'm not sure the Gosselin kids will ever get where these other children are and it's not even their fault. I hope they turn out ok but between beying poorly raised and dealing with some pretty tough stuff(forced filming, early abuse, parental alienation, one sibling removed from home, messy, hateful, public divorce etc) I feel like the odds are pretty much stacked against them.

By no means am I saying people can't overcome adversity but these kids are still currently living a stressful life and I'm not sure how they could get out of it. No expensive iphone, no new puppy, no mansion is going to fix the parental alienation and their vanished sibling.

Perhaps a bit extreme but I heard someone the other day saying "some people are so poor that all they have is money". I really think to some degree, that applies here.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

Roxyhelen (#134), I still say one of TFW'S tackiest moves was selling clothes on consignment which she'd gotten for free. She was on record saying she would "pay it forward," as her family had been so blessed.
But the only kind of service she's interested in is lip service. Oh,
and room service.

Not charity minded? That's not a crime. Too busy to find an organization in need willing to come pick up your donation? Fair enough. But to make time to schlep a bunch of things to a consignment shop, and then make a second trip to collect your cash? When you're worth millions? Blech.

This. I am not trying to sound like some mother Theresa. I really don't do that much(shoebox at Christmas and I did some volunteer work just not in the last year or so) plus maybe trying to help out in the moment if I can. That is literally bare minimum. My problem with Kate is that she doesn't seem to even do that. It would have been so easy to say on TV "thanks for all the gifts but please in the future send them to needy kids, as we have been blessed enough and have all we need now". Also she wouldn't have to find a charity, she is rich enough to PAY people to do it all for her. The fact that she took time to sell donated clothes is so horrible.

RoxyHelen, Flimsy, remember years ago when they stopped at the ice cream store and the boys, the were so little, were outside of the shop and they were having a ball, rolling down the hill in the green grass.

That itch went out there and jumped all over them about getting dirty and grass stains and how hard she was gong to suffer scrubbing and cleaning them.

Then in another episode when all the boys went golfing with Jon, the boys wouldn't get out of the cart because they were afraid of messing up their clothes. Jon said, your mother has done this to you she's insane, something to that affect.

Now, I know why! She was given those clothes for free, wielded her Iron Fist in all of the kids faces and dared them to even put one, just one stain on their clothes. She wanted those clothes in mint condition so she could drop them off at the consignment shop to sell and make pure profit.

When the babies were born, many people donated clothes baby clothes and other items like household things and I think she had them all taken to the consignment shop. How could you treat your own children like this? The stress level being so careful not to stain your playclothes?

SHE'S RUINED!!!

She is a horrible mother.

RoxyHelen, thank you for doing the Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes! I have been doing it for 14 years. I also do artwork on the inside of the shoe box lid. It gives me such joy to be able to do it!

If anyone is interested in the OCC shoe boxes, just go to YouTube and you can watch quick little clips of children opening their own box and the joy on their face is priceless. My dream is to see a clip and see a child open a box up and I see my art work on the box lid! What a treat that would be!

It is through Samaritans purse, a ministry of Billy Graham.

If you want to help in some way, but really don't want to pack a box, you can buy stuffed animals, crayons, school supplies and take it to the collection center in your area during collection week in November, every year. All the info you need is on the OCC website.

The children that get these boxes have never been given a gift before in their lifetime. The age catagories are:

Boys 2-4
Girls 2-4
Boys 5-7
Girls 5-7
Boys 10-14
Girls 10-14

The category that gets the fewest boxes is:

Boys and Girls 10-14 (most needed)
Boys and Girls 2-4
Boys and Girls. 5-7

The 10-14 girls are the most needy for washable feminine pads. I had no idea until I read an article about how the girls miss 4 months of school a year due to this. I am going to try to make no sew washcloth pads and make extra for filler that can be boxed up and Filler on the box so they can put them in the girl boxes.

My heart goes out to those girls.

What have we heard TFW say about school? School means summer fun is over. School means not getting to sleep in. School means getting up at the crack of dawn to drive her 7 little meal tickets to the school bus stop. School means lame field trips. School means parent/teacher
conferences too boring for her to endure without tweeting.

And the absolute worst thing about school? Not having unfettered access to those meal tickets for constant filming. Because Mom decided to "work in a different field."

Former Lurker (#156), you know what's conspicuous in its absence from that Poor TFW string of posts?
The slightest concern or curiosity about how her 8 kids -- one who doesn't even live at home -- are dealing with the tragedy. Has TFW asked they how they feel? Kids their own age were brutally murdered. Might'nt THEY have been in need of comfort and reassurance at bedtime? Some extra attention and affection? Or maybe letting Nanuq sleep in one of their rooms for the night? And even if it was mostly a girls' concert, boys could be just as scared hearing that any children out having fun could be randomly attacked.

James Corden said something right after the attack on his show, like, hold your kids close tonight. But that's not how Super Mom TFW rolls.
Instead SHE needs comforting. She doesn't have a nurturing bone in her body.

Maybe the kids' feelings did come up in later posts. But it's so significant that TFW'S first response was All. About. Her.

That's what I'm thinking. This attack was more upsetting than others for kids. Rarely is an event specifically for children and young people so directly targeted. That can be scary and hard to understand. And we have to understand that most kids these days don't remember 9-11, they fortunately haven't been through something violent that felt so close and frightening and come out the other side stronger knowing life will go on. How are YOUR kids, Kate? They okay?

So why are we assuming that TFW needs comfort and succor because of what happened in the UK? Katespeak again and, as usual, it's rather vague. Let's face it, if it doesn't directly affect TFW she doesn't care. It could be that she's feeling blue because TLC told her they'll only be filming "X" number of episodes this year, there will be no car for the twins, there will be no grand vacation this year AND this is her last season (one can only hope). Milo is reading into it what she wants it to be and she's once again trying to divert the conversation in the direction that she thinks it should go. So far, TFW hasn't risen to the challenge and sent out any sympathy to the families that were affected by the blast.

Admin (#162), and with 7 kids at home, that's 7 individual psyches to deal with. TFW so often divides them into groups: twins and tups, or girls and boys. But each one of those kids would have their own unique feelings about what happened in Manchester. An attentive parent would bring the subject up, and not just assume the kids would come to her with any apprehensions.

TFW isn't really into the "heavy lifting" of parenting. For her, it's more about restaurant-quality breakfasts and expensive gifts and kudos from strangers that laud her as an amazing mother. But the nuts and bolts of being a mom? Caring, compassion, empathy, guidance,
sacrifice, patience, kindness, understanding, and gentleness?
Not so much.

Rae Barnes (#171), you're absolutely right. TFW adapts the facts to fit her narrative. Saying it's been a whole year makes it more dramatic that the dog felt the need to come to her aid -- tender-hearted, sensitive soul that TFW is.

Even the freaking dogs have been parentified. I wouldn't be surprised if Zorro is now giving her neck rubs with his little wings.
No living creature is safe in that house.

Wait, KATE was too busy to meet someone from kiwi-birds-with-no-arms land who brought a real koala to Reading, PA?
Whoa.

That's how I read it as well. My point was, that Milo (and all the sheep) state everyone who meets Kate loves her. This woman flew across the world with a freaking koala, was very near Kate, and didn't say boo. I think it's hilarious, and reaffirms what we have seen over the years regarding Kate and her "relationships". She always f's them up somehow.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

Nicky (#177), I agree. She was so close to where TFW lives. If she truly wished they could have gotten together, I think she would have conveyed that. I think TFW's "everyone who meets me loves me" theory has been disproven often.

OT: Dancing With The Stars finale was Tuesday night, it was a terrific show! I would have been happy with whoever won. There were guest appearances by LOTS of prior contestants. Tfmjg was not one of them.
Monday night episode, Tom Bergeron the host was very professional and sincere, at the end of the show he addressed that while DWTS was going on they had heard the news of what was happening in Manchester and wanted to express sympathy for ther people of Manchester. It was obvious from the facial expressions of some of the dancers, they had no idea what had happened and were hearing about it as the credits rolled. I heard about it on Facebook. Amazing that so much actual news, events add they happen, can be communicated via Facebook.

If Koala Lady had asked TFW if they could meet, TFW would probably have played the crazy-busy single mom card and said things are sooo hectic as the school year wraps up. Hey, maybe the woman did ask, and is too embarrassed to admit that -- not wanting to make TFW look bad.

Collin wasn't.

I agree Admin, I thought the finale of DWTS was great. I'm glad that Rashad and David were the top two. I was following the results on twitter and thought it was funny that all of Normani's fans were calling "foul play" because she was the best dancer and it was a "popularity contest". Well no shit sherlock! It's always been a popularity contest and if they want it based strictly on the best dancer they're going to have to go by judges scores alone....and level the playing field. Either all have some type of dance training or none do. I liked David's attitude. He knew he wasn't the best dancer and that the fans got him to the finale and he said he was dancing for them. A class act all the way (for a Cubbie).

Sorry I deleted my comment above but I was cleaning fingerprints off my iPad and hit the delete button.

Koala gate. lol

Either the Australian lady is not admitting that TFW said she was too busy and didn't want to get embarrassed or the AU lady didn't want to meet with her because the way TFW treated her.

Or they are filming and filmed with the Koala bear.

Hmmm...

GollyGee said...

I think that Jamie's wording, can't wait to cuddle, can't wait to do this at TFW's place is code speak for filming.

This is the only times that she comes to visit her when she is filming and she gets paid for it.

Joy in Virginia (#180), what a dope TFW was to burn that DWTS bridge. She could've been sitting in the audience every subsequent season. She could've been asked to participate in the live tours.
That could've led to appearances
on other ABC projects. When you're kind and hardworking, people will, work with you again and again. But if you're a snotty, lazy heifer, well...don't call them, they'll call you.

Opening credits music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw238jNysao

I haven't seen this mentioned yet but the score to this thing is really moving and helps bring you to the farthest reaches of your emotions. Couldn't be more perfect. The violin playing triplets furiously throughout the opening credits, the duet the eventually happens with the piano main theme, the synthesizers droning as if echoing a young girl's haunting cries. It was written by Blake Neely, who also did the score to Everwood, which I also loved.

And the closing credits, which vaguely remind me of Schindler's List: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_0lCeeGHxw

Joy, did you hear or read about the Richmond, VA couple who had sextuplets recently? I just saw it on the news.
There was no mention of how they conceived, but they had 3 boys and 3 girls.
Our local news team was talking about them this morning and made lots and lots of comments about suddenly having 6 kids, and all that college tuition.
In all their banter, not a mention of the famousish Gosselins, or "call Kate Gosselin for advice".

Another story in the news is a pregnant high school senior who got pregnant while going to her Christian school, which violated her "contract" and she's not allowed to participate in graduation despite being a straight-A student.

(The agreement included no drinking, drugs, sex...)

I wondering what a lawyer would have to say about minors signing contracts, or parents signing for them. What the news piece showed was 2 separate agreements: one for the parents and one for the student.

GollyGee said...

I think is horrible that the school won't allow the pregnant girl walk to get her diploma. She has every right to. It would be a great lesson in forgiveness and redemption. I would think an attorney would jump at the chance about a minor signing a morals contract. They are minors.

When I graduated, there was a classmate who was really showing (first child) and she made the decision not to walk. I felt so bad for her. She didn't want people that didn't know her to think that she wasn't married. But in fact, she had been married for 2 years and was living on a horse farm. Such a sweet girl.

GollyGee said...

I just remembered. In the case of the girl not being allowed to walk to get her diploma, her dad was the school board president and he was so appalled at the schools behavior, he resigned.

He was upset how they treated his daughter. Way to go dad!

That school put the Scarlet letter on that girl and they shouldn't have.

This patriarchal shaming should be a thing of the past. If you do well in school, you should have earned your right to don your cap and gown and graduate with your class.
What having sex has to do with graduating from high school is beyond me.

When I graduated from Catholic high school many moons ago, they were making maternity uniforms and the mothers graduated with the rest of the class.
I remember seeing some of them hold their baby in their arms, wearing their cap and gown.
This is just archaic.

I saw an interview with the girl's principal and it made me so mad! He said we all forgive her. They all forgive her? The only forgiveness should some from above as she has done nothing to the principal. Besides we are all sinners, her problem is that her 'sin' is obvious. How do they know none of the other seniors haven't had sex? And who are they to determine what sin is worse than others?

I survived 12 years in the Catholic school system. The year after I graduated, the class president got pregnant. Normally, the president sits on stage but the administration said no. There was a huge uproar with the class deciding to boycott graduation and they finally relented. She went on to get married to the father, graduate from college, develop a successful career and have other children with a very happy marriage.

Let me get this straight. We don't want young people to get abortions but if they do have abortions we're going to publically shame them and make them feel like they're living the scarlet letter. As far as I'm concerned this kind of shame and rigidity is on the same spectrum as the secret sexual abuse that plagued the church.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Correct don't have abortions: if they keep the kid.

Exactly. And also do not provide birth control, so if you can't practice "self-control" (abstinence), then you have to live with the consequences. Isn't it ironic how some births are celebrated (ie: married adults), and some are seen as shameful? (unwed mother). Did they deny the father of the child access to the graduation ceremony as well? Ugh!

WaPo article on the Taiwo sextuplets*. No mention of the Gosselins, but it does emphasize more than once how much the Taiwos are attempting to stay private, with no media (besides one photo of them) and keeping their home address private.
How will freebies and a Mercedes Sprinter miraculously arrive at their doorstep?

*The Taiwos were initially expecting quadruplets, but soon after, their doctors found 6 heartbeats. No indication that it was the worst day of their lives.

Yes, indeed. The implication, by MEN, is that women who have sex out of wedlock are whores. This is exactly what that cretin priest did to the girls of Keogh H.S.

I also blame the parents for putting their young girls in this horrible, patriarchal and misogynistic institution to begin with.

You don't, as a parent. sign on the dotted line for your female child's body and intact hymen, and neither should any minor.

That kind of control doesn't belong in America.
