A reality star's daughter breaks her silence: I was 'exploited, 'powerless without a voice'

One reality T.V. kid steps into adulthood, and introspection: 'Excess debris created by a produced, manipulated, pseudo-reality universe.'

Says Real Housewives daughter Christie Staub in this chilling account (and big foreshadowing):
  • My mother's storyline was edited and produced, placing her in scenarios to achieve a desired outcome. She wouldn't normally be involved in these scenarios; they were dictated by the producers, and they just told my mom where to show up for filming. In season one, my mother didn't expect this to happen. These were the early days of reality shows. In 2006, The Hills was in its first season, and the Real Housewives franchise had yet to become a household name. Today, reality stars are savvy, but a decade ago, talent lacked a frame of reference. Other than Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, my mother had never seen a reality show. Just be myself, she thought. Little did she know that myself is how the producers choose to present you. Every story arc needs an antagonist and a protagonist—that is what creates the conflict and resolution, i.e. the drama.

  • Imagine if all of the arguments you've had in your life were filmed by a stranger, and they took out the worst things you said, edited it together, and then presented the footage on TV to define your character. Would you say that characterization was accurate? Anything that is produced, and edited in this manner, is fictitious by default, but unlike an actor, my mother didn't have the advantage of hiding behind a character, not to mention that the reality forms a perception that is impossible to overcome when the viewers aren't aware of what goes down behind the scenes. The producers had the power to manipulate my mother in anyway they pleased to increase ratings. When the second season ended, my mother decided to leave the show. The network portrayed her decision as her getting fired, but she left to save her life and her kids.

  • Even now, all these years later, people see me as a character created by a producer. They see me as the daughter of an infamous reality show prostitution whore. They may not have called me garbage like they called my mother, but that's how they made me feel. They took away my name and my voice. My name is Christine Staub, and I will no longer be the excess debris created by a produced, manipulated, pseudo-reality universe. I will never again be a character defined by unethical producers, and exploited by networks all over the world. I am no longer a child, powerless without a voice.

How soon will the sextuplets demand that THEY be allowed to take friends along on these "vacations" like C & M?

&&&

I've been wondering that. It's one thing for the twins to have her over a barrel but can you imagine all eight of them running the show? They will soon.

The only thing kind of great about this filming continuing is knowing how much Kate is going to have to pull teeth to keep it going. She deserves an uphill battle.

And there wouldn't be throngs of people to ogle Kate's rockin bod, so how would Steve earn his keep?

He's creative. He would find a way and he could do all the ogling he wants and in private. He wouldn't have to share her rockin' body with anyone.

Making these kids give up their every vacation and weekend to film is going to cost Kate. Although, I'm sure it helps her that she's never let the tups join in any sports or activities which require commitment.
Kate has to bribe them at this point, because they're too old too not tell their dad or anyone else if she hits them, locks them outdoors, withholds food or anything essential.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

PatK (#200), I agree the girl tups might start making demands soon (well, 2 of them). But I don't think the boys don't have voices in that house. She has marginalized them again and again on camera, and who knows what she does behind closed doors. They're not stupid boys -- I'm
sure they are well aware of how little their thoughts and opinions matter to their mother.

I wonder what poor C is going to give his mom for her birthday this year. For his sake, I hope she won't open in on camera and say something unkind about it. Although knowing how desperate she is to stay in the limelight, she might do exactly that, and this time make a big fuss about it,
and smother him with hugs and kisses. See,
folks? You just imagined that whole thing last year. TFW LOVES her boys! Haven't you read her hashtags that say just that?

@flimsyFlamsy And because of that i can see why she loves Kate so much.Milo acts like she's this positive person but we have tweets from her(some which she deletes)that show she's deep down a very passive aggressive kinda person. The stoning of teenagers tweet speaks for what kind of person she is.When Kate had new episodes coming out ever week,it showed me how very insecured she is.Because she was beyond desperate to prove the haters wrong.I believe if Kate does show a more loving side about Collin's gift to her this year and she's still around.Im certain she'll tweet something like."You see this trolls,Kate loves collin #motherandson #lovingfamily".

She wouldn't do that. To do so would only call attention to the face that Collin has always been the black sheep of the family, thus giving ammunition to the non-fans to call her out on it, such as the gift he gave to her, or the spankings and neglect he has gone through.

I haven't seen any wildly insane fans popping up on Twitter, so I really doubt that Gladys is tweeting under another name. If she does so, she wouldn't be able to do so without getting outed, and with her writing style and crazy love fest she has going on, that wouldn't take long.

For some reason, I can't read the old tweets on Tweet Tunnel. I don't have Twitter, and I get the "Could not authenticate you" message. Did Twitter change who can read the old Tweets on Tweet Tunnel? I have a People subscription. Article about the incredibly boring Duggars is interview with adult children who will be featured on Counting On. Joy 18, Jana 26, Jinger 22, John 26, Josiah 19, Joseph 21, Jessa 23 and husband Ben 20, and there is a photo of Jill 24 and husband Derick 27. Boo hoo, big brother Josh and his scandal ended the show single handedly. Counting On well focus on how older kids are changing, moving into adulthood. The girls are wearing skirts that show their knees, well, a little of their knees. Some of them like doing hands on work in renovating and flipping houses, so maybe they are aiming for a property brothers type show.

There is an air of desperation I'm getting from these people. It reminds me of the movie "Tootsie," when Dustin Hoffman's character is struggling at an audition. They say they want someone taller, and he says he can be taller. Then they say they want someone shorter, and he says he can be taller. Then they say they want someone different, and he says he can be different. At that point, he would've said anything just to get that job.

On earlier Duggar shows the kids appeared to have gender specific chores. They made a big deal over swapping jurisdictions on one episode with boys on laundry and cooking and girls on mowing, etc. The Helmeted One and Curley Q announced that they should all know how to do it all.

I think I remember them saying they all learned about basic plumbing, hammering, and other DIY projects while they were building their house. They put it to use again when the married siblings got their houses fixed up.

So yeah, a flippin' show - ;) - is likely.

She didn't want her kids going into reality tv and wanted them to become doctors or lawyers. Seriously? Some people think putting kids on reality t.v. is exploitive and that exploitation is abusive. I do.

Exploitation is recognized by some states as abusive, including California. It's in the Welfare and Institutions Code, and it's brand new. However I think the intent right now is more to go after sex trafficking. I can see that evolving and building to include any kind of exploitation though. We've come a long way in recognizing a child's right to have an innocent childhood, especially in CA-- whether that's free from being sexually molested or exploited, to having plenty of time to still be a child (and hang onto your money) even if you are employed in the entertainment business.

As far as the Duggars go I do have real concerns about their judgment as young parents. Part of it is all the filming they have done which has isolated them from the real world. Part of it is their youth. Part of it is the sheltered nature of their lifestyle, which includes limited education and experiences outside their cult. Learning about lots of different people and having exposure to different environments fosters critical thinking. It was clear from the interview with Megyn Kelly they're really lacking in that department. There wasn't an independent thought in their bodies. They haven't thought through the sexual abuse on their own. They parroted their dad and that's about it.

I don't have the first inclination they would protect their offspring from something negative about being on TV, let alone be able to even recognize it. They're clearly not capable.

I agree. However, I think the initial comment was referring to just the parent appearing on reality tv, and the child seeing that's how they made their money and following suit. If the child as an adult decides to follow what the parent did, after the parent made them go to college and didn't allow them to be on their show as a child, I wouldn't hold the parent responsible. Nor would I consider it abuse. Sure it's Do as I say, not as I do, but once the child is old enough to make their own decisions even if the parent didn't want the same for them, I don't consider it abuse or exploitation.

The initial comment as about Snooki, who chooses to have a reality tv show, but not allow her minor children to be on it. She also says she wants them to grow up and have a normal life and career. Snooki seems to want better for her children. I respect her for that. If, as adults, they decide to do a reality tv show regardless, I wouldn't hold Snooki responsible for it.

I have to agree with the above reply. It's not child abuse if the parent kept the child off their reality tv show and the child later decides to do reality tv because their parent did. Especially if the parent tried to steer them in a different direction.

Consider the topic of this very thread. Danielle Staub's daughter suffered the consequences of her mother being on reality tv. Danielle was cast as the villain and went after that role with gusto. Of course, there's the sex tape that her mother did so anyone who wants to know what her vaj looks like can do so.
I don't think that's looking out for your children's best interest.
Christie certainly loves her mother, but I think she's in denial, pinning all the blame of producers and Danielle's cast mates.
Danielle bears a good deal of he blame because she's no dummy, but apparently, the price her children would pay for her brief 15 minutes of fame and fortune didn't seem to matter.

Yes true enough. I think there is definitely something unhealthy going on there but I can't say merely having a parent who has a certain job, anything from being a reality show star to an actor to prostitution, is necessarily abusive in and of itself. Does it or can it have really serious consequences for their child as they become an adult? Absolutely. So does anything about a parent.

Kaya said...

The reference about the "cycle of abuse" was to Snooki, not the Duggars. I doubt her children are going to be featured on a show about flipping houses.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I'd also wonder if having a parent who does a reality show for a living, especially their mother, could foster a vicariously self absorbed child, and a child who is not taught there is something more to value about a woman other than her sexual or non-sexual real life escapades.

The same sort of skewed view of the world can happen to children of actors and actresses.

Tucker's Mom said...

Snooki will be making her kids part of the storyline for her new show.

But parents should be, or at least are supposed to be, good role models for their children. If the child sees her mother taking on a whole different personal for the drama of the show, or making a sex tape, what will that teach the child? Isn't that a major conflict as the child matures? My mom did it, she's my role model, so it's fine for me to follow in her footsteps. Or is it a case as "do as I say, not as I do?" I would think that this would really confuse a kid. To what extent does a mother's behavior influence the child?

In my experience, being a star/host of a renovations show is more like being an actor / TV presenter / etc than it is like being on a show like real housewives or JK+8. The hosts are usually presented in a limited context (the renovation or remodel or whatever, not their entire life) and are presented in a fairly good light (I can't think of any "villains" on HGTV, though I could be wrong).

But parents should be, or at least are supposed to be, good role models for their children. If the child sees her mother taking on a whole different personal for the drama of the show, or making a sex tape, what will that teach the child?

Being a bad role model is poor parenting but it is not child abuse.

I have to stop you there. That depends. There are some circumstances where who your parent is, their choices, what they say and do, has tremendous impact on their children to the point of emotional abuse.

For example, alcoholism can have a tremendous emotional impact on a child such that a child can end up emotionally distraught. You need only talk to Alanon about that. And their parent may never have laid a hand on them. I have absolutely seen petitions filed, and sustained, based on who a parent is that resulted in a child being emotionally abused. And in CA you don't have to have even CAUSED the emotional abuse or have intent, you are still liable if you have not properly taken care of a child who is emotionally distraught for whatever reason. That's *child abuse* under CA law.

Having worked in the field for 8 years, I have to say unfortunately child abuse comes in as many forms as there are snowflakes. And you have to take into account children react differently. One child may simply brush off their alcoholic parent and go on with life, while for another child, having an alcoholic parent could ruin their life. I simply cannot rule out that someone who chooses to go on reality TV is not abusive to their child. I can see multiple scenarios and possibilities.

Lanc Native said...

))))))))))))

I agree. I think that there are those who believe that, when talking about child abuse, it involves actual physical abuse, beatings, working a child to death, neglect, not providing food, clothing and shelter for them.

There is also emotional abuse, and PA child services has, in the past, minimized the emotional abuse because it's been so difficult to prove and evaluate. With new laws on the table, especially in mandate reporting, the state has expanded its laws where emotional abuse is no longer taking a back seat and it now is considered a form of "child abuse," and that's a good thing.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Kaya, that was just your "opinion"? Sorry, you stated it so emphaticaly and chastising, (What "cycle of abuse?" A parent appearing on reality TV is not guilty of child abuse by virtue of that choice) that I completely missed that you were just giving your opinion.

CC said...

While I did say that I don't think a parent being on a reality tv show is abuse (if the child is not on the show) I will say I was thinking more along the lines of Snooki and JWoww, since they were the examples given.

I think Snooki and JWoww, as silly and "stupid" as they portray themselves on the show, have matured a lot compared to their wild Jersey Shore days. I think their children could be mortified by how they acted, but that was when they were young and stupid, before they were parents.

I don't watch the Housewives, Teen Moms or any other reality show for that matter... so I can't say how their actions affect their children.

If the parent's role on a reality tv show does have a negative impact on their child's life, I probably would feel that it is a form of abuse of their child. Legally, I'm not sure what can be done though, at this point.

As for Kate, I think that Kate is abusive by having her kids on the reality tv show with her and how they are portraying them and how she treats them, etc. Unfortunately it seems as long as they have work permits it's "legal," which is sickening.

So I would like to qualify what I said earlier by making it clear that I was referring to a reality tv show where the parents' actions on the show aren't damaging their children emotionally or psychologically.

I think parents have a responsibility to their children when it comes to how the parents choose to live their lives whether in the public eye, or in the privacy of their own homes.

The older Duggar kids were on GMA this morning talking about their new show. John-David basically explained Josh's actions by using the excuse "the Devil made him do it".

"John-David Duggar said the family had overcome its challenges and grown more united.

“The devil took his best shot. And he tried to take our whole family down, but God has really used this to -- instead of tearing us apart as a family, he's using it to draw us together ... We've forgiven, and we're moving on, and we're looking to the future,” he said."

The rhetoric that this family spews is terrifying. He molested 5 minor girls and he was just a "hormonal teen", and now, he's cheated on his wife, put her at risk, and the devil is responsible?
Look, it's healing to forgive, but dangerous to put the blame on anyone but the perp.
This type of thinking is why I've always believed that Jim Boob hasn't the ability to understand his complete and utter failure as a father. He acknowledges no role in the violation of his daughters and another man's little girl, but his own son.

These people are not nearly clever enough to keep up with their lies. And there is now no doubt in my mind that Josh will be back on TV. The "Almighty" the Duggars seem to have the strongest allegiance to is the almighty dollar.

Unfortunately TLC has proved they are only in the business for money. As long as the new Duggar show brings in 2+ million viewers a week they aren't going to care if any harm comes to the children. Jessa's excuse about helping people is obvious BS. The whole family is addicted to the money the show was bringing in and they will say whatever needs to be said to keep the gravy train running.

At one time I had hope the new Discovery boss was going to stick to his "No More BS" statement from last January, but in reality (pun intended) nothing has changed. Rich Ross is no different than Eileen O'Neil.

Minimizing sexual molestation isn't helping anyone. Saying that the devil is the cause of a man cheating on his wife isn't helping anyone.
I'd consider having a modicum of respect for them if they didn't always speak in euphemisms and had the courage to speak honestly about their lives. You can't help anyone, or put yourself out there as some kind of example, when you aren't getting real.
Victims are further victimized and don't have their lives packaged with gauzy, sound track-filled life episodes that come with money, fame and access.

There will always be those, like Kate's sheeple, who are either in denial or were just missed when any kind of logical/critical thinking ability was passed around. Yes, their fans will believe them and will find any reason they can to keep on 'supporting' this family. We've seen it so often in the fans of Kate when they tweet what a loving parent she is, doing everything for her kids, ad nauseam. Now the Duggars want to help just one more person. No, they don't. They want to help themselves to the money that comes their way, courtesy of TLC and those who watch this nonsense.

If the devil is responsible for Josh's actions then every criminal who sits in court should be replaced by satan himself. After all, offenders didn't commit criminal acts; the devil made them do it and your honor, it really isn't the fault of the accused over there. Satan took over and made him do it. Case dismissed. Geez.

The entire family has been seduced, not by the devil, but by the fame and money that TLC forks over to them. In a way, though, the bottom line is that the love of money is the root of all evil, and the girls, their husbands and the rest of the clan has been seduced by a network that keeps pumping the dollars their way. I do wish, however, that the one husband could find a few bucks for a bar of soap to give himself a good scrub-down in the shower.

What I get from the spewing of the rhetoric is that the Duggar family stinks from the head down.
YEARS after 4 girls were molested and the abuser had gone on to cheat on his wife in meaningless sexcapades, there is zero evidence of insight or inkling any of the victims has received real, professional care.
Their stubborn refusal to seek actual, competent help leaves every reason for concern.
Funny how their Christianity leads them to eschew secular professionals and beliefs, but allows them to embrace Capitalism with gusto and abandon.

Zero.

Several of the children have now made comments about Josh. They have all minimized his behavior and have all been unable to demonstrate they can identify inappropriate behavior, stop it, and protect any minors they may parent or be around.

That, Milo, is proof their parents have failed them. No, they did not do what they could for them. Not in the slightest.

Insular connections are a major part of the Duggars' problems here, IMO. One feeds off the other, reemphasizing and rehashing the insular thinking they share. They cannot and will not even peek past it because it's scary, it's out to grab the faithful and carry them into heathenland, and it will kill your soul. That is the lesson learned and imbedded. A secular psychologist or counsellor would start peeling the protective coating away and then doubt could set in. Clearly, doubt is worse than any other sin for the Duggars. The rest can be explained away.

"The devil made me do it" was a catch phrase from some comedian in the 1960's - I think it was Flip Wilson.
We used to laugh and we sarcastically used that comment with our friends all the time. Never tried it with parents or teachers because, well, no. We knew it would never fly in real life. It's been a very long time since I've heard it at all. It's hard for my brain to accept it as a serious comment.

Somewhat on topic I was reading an article about the very famous songwriter Ellie Goulding who was like I don't understand it but I'm never recognized in public even though I have songs in the top 10. If you look at a photo of her she looks really generic, like any woman you might see out and about. For whatever reason her generic look blends in and isn't getting recognized. I just thought that was kind of funny, how ironic if you wanted to be famous for the recognition and then look too generic to get recognized.

I think that all depends on what activities they did and where they went and even what time of year.

If a lot of things got rained out and they spent a lot of time in hotels there might not be a lot of twitter sightings.

Or sometimes it's just luck of the draw, you happen to run into a lot of people active on twitter who tweet about you. I think a lot of times that's young people, who may not share the same spring break as them and are in school instead. If they just run into a bunch of vacationing seniors, it's far less likely there's going to be some tweets.

The trip to Fla-rida was in the summer as I recall, when a lot of other vacationers and young people are out and about and tweeting. Incidentally I went to New Orleans in March over my spring break one year and there were hardly any young vacationers. Granted, some of that was Hurricane Katrina, but it's still not the most popular destination for young people at most times other than Mardi Gras.

Another thing to keep in mind is that area has been through a lot of rough weather in the past week. People might be a little more caught up in all that to be tweeting about the odd D lister sighting or may have even felt trite saying anything, especially local businesses and such. You don't want any backlash while people are putting out sandbags and you're peeing your pants over Kate plus 8.

Easily could be. I don't think they had a beach vacay with time to relax and enjoy. Like most places they go to film, it's a jam-packed schedule where they hit their marks, get the footage and leave.
I visited New Orleans before Katrina and found it rather gritty. The history, the food, the architecture the lushness were all nice to take in and experience, but there's an edge there that wouldn't make it the first place I'd want to take kids. In fact, I was there for a professional convention and sadly found that one of our members was mugged and beaten to within an inch of her life while there.

not. There was an actual physical threat to
her children, and she simply did not mind
taking that risk for her own enjoyment.

But I suppose if you're a TFW fan, you'd say that projectile vomiting for hours with cameras in your face is no biggie, and the kids probably felt better the very second they wiped the puke off their legs, and it taught them to be tough and resilient, just like their amazing, strong,

I just caught a few minutes of Anna and her sisters-in-law being interviewed. Anna and Jessa constantly look to the left, a supposed clue they are not being honest. Jill and Jessa look to the right while speaking, a suggestion of honesty, but that means little since the objects of their devotion are seated on their right.

I have no idea where that notion came from, but I heard it's been tested by those who test these things and found to be a legitimate clue to veracity. (Of course it's not the only clue, sheeple!)

Aw. Kate never tweets Holly, either, and I think Holly has given up asking her questions.

When I read Macey's tweet, I thought about someone I know, a celebrity, who goes out of his way to make special needs fans feel, well, very special, and calls them on stage with him, has visited sick kids in hospitals and taken some on trips, fulfilling wishes, all without publicity and fanfare. Maybe that's one of the reasons he is so well liked and respected by so many people.

Kate...not so much. They just can't help her, and so she pays no attention to them. She didn't even want to meet fans at The Grove, and said, "That wasn't part of it." What a selfish person.

I don't think those ratings are great. I thought they were much better. But of course TLC "renewed" them for another season. I think anything over 800,000 or so is probably good enough for that network. I think if I recall correctly you think that Kate will not film for much longer. I strongly disagree because in a few years she will have 8 teenagers, proms, college, dating, marriages, grandchidren, etc. It will never end, I am afraid. It may wax and wane but will never end.

The Duggars really hit great ratings when the kids starting courtships, marriages, and pregnancies. So did The Little Couple when they adopted.

Poor Macey. I give Kate a pass on this one. There's a lot of people she's never responded to. She can't respond to them all and she's not on twitter that much lately anyway.

This is a big problem with twitter is it seems to cause a lot of animosity among fans. The fans are never going to feel like their celeb is giving them all fair or equal treatment. There will always be hurt feelings. And the more susceptible fans like special needs people or kids are much more easily hurt. Yes, I agree, and so many fans think that just because they scratch Kate's back when she needs them, that she should reciprocate. Some get darn demanding and want to know what she's doing, what's for dinner, where she's going for vacation, etc.

I imagine that the special needs fans feel hurt when they see her many times manic tweeting some fans and 'following' them while at the same time she ignores the Maceys and the Hollys out there. Holly has always politely asked Kate questions, but Kate never has replied to her. That just isn't right.

She could and should, but in her defense, where does it end? Even if she said hi to a couple of her fans with special needs I doubt they'd let it stop there. They would want hellos every day. They would want more and more. A part of me wonders if Kate actually has sense enough not to open that pandora's box.

I don't think Kate makes ANY effort to be fair to her fans and spread the love equally or to make an effort with those with special needs. That said, there is no winning with this. Even if she DID make a concerted effort it's never going to be enough for them.

In the old days when a fan was interested in a celeb they wrote them a letter and probably got a signed photo back and maybe a few personal words and it ended there. Twitter allows a direct line to celebs, a little bit of a chat back and forth for some fans. It's this whole new thing that most fans has ever really been able to do before. This kind of contact is in its infancy. We don't know where it will lead.

I see admin's point, but don't all of her fans want attention when she graces them with her presence on Twitter? So she tweets a special needs fan once in a while. How is that any different than tweeting her other fans, Barb, Denise, Milo? If Kate ignored everyone, fine, let her ignore them. They'll never learn that they are being used when she wants something, but I really don't see that one friendly response to the special needs fans will make them burn up her Twitter line. Just because Gladys went nuts over a television shout-out doesn't mean that all of them are obsessively insane!

James, this will be my last comment on the subject, but Kate really doesn't even need to threaten or bribe the kids to film. The judge says it is O.K.; this is how she supports her family; and the kids are under the age of 18; and Kate loves to film so it is not going to stop as long at TLC is filming.

But I do think, and we heard Kate say so much, that she offers them treats or such if they behave on camera. But from the way most of the kids badly behave I doubt that has much influence on them.

I hope you are right James. But I am afraid that you may not be.

About the kids wanting to film- I think there have been many times over the years that certain kids do not want to film, travel, be herded like cattle on planes, train and automobiles, film and dash, and have people gawk at them everywhere they go.
Sure, there's a lot that's to like and each one will enjoy certain aspects of filming, depending on location and activity.
However, I have no doubt to the veracity of Jon's claims that he has been told by his children, on occasion, that they do not want to film. I believe that Mady didn't want to go to Alaska, and believe Jon tried his best to take her, but Kate made Mady go. Just look at the photos-they are so sad. I also tend to believe reports that Kate was abusive to Mady during that trip.
In fact, I believe Kevin and Jodi when they said way back when, years ago, that the children would come to them to tell them they didn't want to film.
I always keep in mind that the pretty packaged episode is just that, and filming is intense and grueling at times. Thinking of the Gosselin kids getting to go on a vacation can't compare to any of our experiences, because none of us were filming tv episodes.
I think most people don't get that.
Those kids have little else besides school when they don't film. Their own personal lives, social activities, sports, talent, interests are limited to Legos and dolls at the compound. They have never been given the opportunities, the "mediocre' opportunities, that other kids have.
So sure, I think the kids would look forward to their filming because they don't know what it's like to be developing on their own with the support of their parents, getting them involved in outside things that will help them grow as individuals.
They exist to serve Kate's agenda. I wouldn't so much say it's their "normal", because it's anything but normal, but I would say that they don't know any better yet. They literally only know the the "package" mentality.
If those boys and girls knew the rewards, joy and fun associated with the ability to grow and shine on their own, they wouldn't cooperate with Kate.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

Tucker's Mom (#164), I also tend to think that
the kids mostly have negative feelings towards filming. And I contend that one of the reasons
is that each child is bound to want to be doing something else during that time, which their mother would totally disregard. Something as simple as a friend's birthday party or sleepover or playdate in the park.

Anyone who has, or even knows, teenagers and preteens know that their have active social
lives. But can you imagine J saying to his mother, I don't want to go film at Target
Sunday -- it's Rory's birthday, and his mom is taking us all to see Star Wars, and then we're going out for pizza. Not an option, period.
Now multiply that one hypothetical example by
8, and by how many weekends and vacations
those children have spent at TLC's beck and
call over the years. Spending hundreds of hours with their "crew daddies" over a decade is no substitute for healthy peer interaction.

Tucker's Mom said...

Exactly. Most families go on vacations from time to time, and have their bonding time. But the G kids have no say when they will be available to do personal stuff, because filming is their JOB and the MUST fulfill their CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS.

&&&&

Of course she can threaten them that if they don't film they would have to live in a smaller house, and although the kids can see that even though it works for Jon it wouldn't work for them. She would simply point out that they certainly don't want all of them to be crammed into a tiny house like Dad's with no large rooms, no huge yard, no swimming pool, no new deck. Just remember, kids, with a three-bedroom house you'd all have share bedrooms and maybe two bathrooms and you would never have any privacy. You better believe that would make them think twice about giving up their 6,200 square foot house with sizable acreage.

In other words, it's fine to visit in a smaller house, but they wouldn't want to live in one permanently. Thus, their working makes it possible for them to stay where they are.

I was a competitive swimmer starting at age 4. At the time it was basically a local thing with competitions against the other local team. The coach had grand dreams of building a powerhouse team over time, one that would be nationally rated and respected. The thought of an Olympic swimmer or 6 stirred his soul.
By the time I was in Jr. High school, things were going his way. By High School, we had 3 at the Olympic Trials and one who won an Olympic medal. College swimming scholarships were being offered to most of the older guys. My brother got several really good offers. (Girls didn't get sports scholarships back then. It was an alien concept.)

Swimming on that team was a commitment. As a young child, my practices were limited to an hour a day, and as a preteen, they grew to a 2 steady hours of workouts. As teens the summer months found us in the practice pools from 7:00-10:00 am and back again from 5-7 p.m every day except Sunday. During the school year we hit the indoor pool at 6:00 am and headed for school, often with damp hair, only to return for our second practice after school, right up to the dinner hour. It was our job to be there and to put practices just under school on our priorities lists.

It became a way of life early on. As a child and as a teen I never really questioned it because I really didn't know what there was to question about it. My non-swimming friends had different lives than I did, but swimming was my life. I'm not so sure I would have quit even if I had thought about it. It was part of my identity. I got up, put on my suit, grabbed my towel and went to the pool. I'm sure there were days I grumbled, especially if first dip was ice cold, or I was very tired, but I never seriously questioned it.

HOWEVER, I attended Church and Sunday School and Youth Group every week we didn't have an out of town meet, I was active in a Girl Scout troop through 12th grade and was a member/2 term president of a High School sorority. Even a serious commitment to swimming with lots of out of town meets did not shut the door to lots of socialization, activities and fun.

Looking back on that part of my life, I remember being happy, secure and not inclined to change a thing.

I pray for a similar outcome for the Gosselin 8.

MikeB said...

Kate will likely ensure the twins go to the local community college so they can be nearby for filming. I feel pretty confident she will eventually trot the "Growing up Gosselin" show title she was pushing a couple of years ago either for a separate show about the twins or to rename the main show if the twins decide they don't want to be filmed anymore.

Her identity is completely tied to the "eight" part of Kate+8, but she will do whatever it takes to recast the family if the twins do break away.

Dedication to developing skills and social/civic endeavors is wonderful for kids, and most parents strive to make every opportunity possible.
Kate would never make that happen because she doesn't sacrifice for her kids. Kate thinks things and vacations are more important than giving her kids the opportunities that will help them develop and excel.
She thinks she's not raising them in a mediocre manner because she's famous and has money. Actually, I think those kids are exactly that.
The more time passes, the more opportunities squandered.

I guess anything is possible, but IF she was being paid for re-runs, she'd be the first reality tv person to get them. Reality tv contracts are an agreed amount for each "episode" filmed plus expenses. which TFW loves. Basically, their checks stop when the camera stops.

Has anyone seen the ad for Mark Burnett's new show American Makers? I keep trying to picture Katie's audition:

Um, I made eight (count 'em eight) kids ALL BY MYSELF!

Maybe Mark will cut her some slack since they are such good buds.

It's alive....Kate just tweeted

@katiemill300 amazon.com/gp/aw/s/ref=is…+ --->here❤️!:)

That's hilarious. She tweets to promote her show; she tweets when she wants Polly Pockets, and she tweets when someone asks where to buy her cookbook (there were two copies at our local Dollar Store). She's such a tool. Let's see if this brings Kravitz out of her self-imposed exile.

LOL! TFW can't even get something as simple as telling someone where to purchase the cookbook right. I always thought the arrow was supposed to point to the link that you want someone to click on. Knowing some of her sheeple, they'll be clicking on the ❤️!:) and wonder why it's not taking them anyplace.

Good grief. Folks here are constantly making fun of people on Twitter for asking questions when they could Google and get answers themselves. Why don't you look up TLC's schedule?

Apples and oranges, really. Anonymous wasn't asking Kate because she thinks Kate cares enough to answer.
Anonymous was asking people here, people known to respond out of helpfulness when they can.

Even a serious commitment to swimming with lots of out of town meets did not shut the door to lots of socialization, activities and fun.

&&&&

Absolutely.

Most kids seem to thrive when they have one or two serious activities they can devote much of their school years to. Sports, music, debate team, Scouts, Sierra Club.

The problem with a frequent filming schedule is it can make it difficult or impossible to maintain that level of committment. When I did sports you weren't allowed to miss practices without an excuse like illness. I think you got maybe 1 or 2 unexcused absenses before you were put on probation and soon kicked off the team.

Going on an extended ski vacation was absolutely unexcused and so too would filming be.

Another thing is there is nothing wrong in and of itself with a kid having a packed schedule, being busy, and devoting a lot of time to one thing. But I don't think that should be filming. It should be school, sports, or an activity that enriches them.

I don't believe filming enriches them to the point where it's worth missing time away from friends, their father, and activities. I don't believe it can teach the kind of important life lessons that being on a football team can, or anything similar.

How do you know how the kids spend their time? They may participate in all kinds of activities. You don't *know* these children.

&&&&

No one knows their schedule exactly but we do have a very good idea of how often they are filming, and it's usually weekends and holidays.

The problem is most serious committments at their ages requires you keep large chunks of that time open. If you fill it up too much with filming you won't be able to participate in other things. Or if you can, you will miss a lot of days of it. I don't find any of that to be beneficial to them and like I just said, I don't find filming to be more enriching than many other things they could be doing with their time.

C'mon. The tups go to school, film on weekends, breaks, holidays and vacations AND they're all activity pursuing organized youth or church groups, music, hobbies and sports?
When?
Don't forget that most visit with Jon, too. Let's not also forget cleaning bathrooms, kitchens and feeding chickens, a dog and a bird.
Again, how would they fit it in? And how would Kate have the time when she's busy with her own high maintenance?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

There's something called circumstantial evidence, and we know they've spent a good deal of time the past two years out and about filming instead of making commitments to a solid and enriching activity or activities. Most of us either have kids or remember being a kid and know how these activities work. You can't miss a bunch of meetings or practices or events without being kicked off. Or if you can, you will find yourself at a severe disadvantage compared to the other kids who have the courtesy to COMMIT to such a thing.

These years right now are extremely important to their social development. It's not fair to this important time Kate has decided to clog it with a commitment like filming. Look what a filming commitment did to many other child stars. We have the evidence it wasn't a good thing. Even those who had a great experience on their set still acknowledge how much they missed out on.

I think posting that question to this community of people was completely reasonable

&&&&&

Of course it was. Ask away.

The poster was asking about an episode that already aired. I can't find OLD listings on TLC's site, only upcoming ones. In fact the few TV listings sites I go to never list what aired more than one hour back. The easiest way for the poster to find out is to ask if anyone here happens to know. I'm not even sure there's a site out there that keeps a historical record of all the TV listings. Talk about needing a lot of hard drive space for that info. Once it's over it's over. You'd have to go to each individual show's IMDB to get info on that, and even then it's not going to tell you about all the re-airings.

Oh, and TLC's listings are often inaccurate and confusing and full of a bunch of intensive graphics that my computer struggles to load. It makes more sense to ask people here. I don't like that site at all for getting info about the show. That site even messed me up once on a post I did here about an upcoming episode.

It's not like someone asked about that re-run of Mr. Robot instead of just doing their own Googling. Now that wouldn't make much sense, since it has nothing to do with anything. That's the questions from the fans I find odd. Random stuff like the weather or how to roast a turkey. I just don't get why Kate would weigh in on that. That's different than a community of people, dare I say friends, chatting.

When Kate said she'd disappear after the kids were 18, I thought she'd never last that long. Now, I'm sure her show will morph into something else, as the Duggar show has, and it will go on generationally.

&&&&

I think so too. Doubt all the kids will go for it but they'll be able to find at least a couple for a spin off.

The big problem is ratings of 1 million is enough these days. They're lucky it's 2016 and not 2006.

I've stopped being shocked and appalled. It's too tiring.

I wonder if Kate will go to the bridging/transition breakfast tomorrow morning? ;-) The younger ones will be going into MS in the fall.

Another reason I feel pretty sure none of the other kids are involved in activities is that TFW has repeatedly spoken about C's lacrosse, and attending games. Why would she only chose to speak about that one and only activity if there were several others? And since TFW she gets
grief about keeping her children busy with
filming and neglecting their outside interests, why in the world would she keep mum about them?

I do hope nobody's naive enough to suggest that TFW might not be mentioning the kids' myriad outside activities to protect their privacy.
Her behavior -- as witnessed on screen, interviews, Twitter, etc. -- has proven again
and again that her children's privacy means absolutely nothing to her.

I do know what activities in which these kids participate in school and extra-curricular activities, clubs, sports and so forth. I have no idea, though, what they do when they get home or on weekends. I don't know if they participate in community activities or if they don't. Kate doesn't make that public, but with their school work and the fact that they get home much later than other kids do, I can't imagine that they would have much time in the evenings to do too much other than school work. The weekends, though, are a different story and if they are not participating in things that allow them socialization then they are missing so much.

I wonder if filming is planned for the five-day Easter break. I'm sure that she will come up with something, unless they are with their father during some of that time.

I hope she does, but might leave that to Jon to do.

I can hear her now: "Why would I go? I already know what goes on. It's the same thing every year."
