TLC "has pulled" all episodes of Duggar show in light of sex abuse scandal

TLC has released the following statement:

"Effective immediately, TLC has pulled all episodes of 19 Kids and Counting currently from the air. We are deeply saddened and troubled by this heartbreaking situation, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and victims at this difficult time."

Meanwhile, Gawker has compiled a comprehensive timeline of events, the best we've seen so far.

Well, I called that one about spin-offs. Some here said that would not happen. People Mag has an article on a possible Duggar married girls spin-off. Which was a rumor last year. The comments are about 50-50, for & against. I hope not! Cause, we all know who would be controlling that show: JimBob, and down the road, the rest of family would slip in and then we would see Anna first then the kids & then Josh, and the show would be like just watching 19 kids & counting only with a new title. Remember they are a close-nit family, where else are the Duggars going to get money. The whole focus is to be around the 2 married girls, but seeing how the Duggars are, I bet if this show does happen, you will see in almost every show the rest of the Duggars. TLC DON'T DO IT!

I see that the Washington Post has picked up the child protection service story from the National Report. It's interesting that the people here (collectively) were better at detecting that this story is false/satire than the Washington Post was!
=============

Are you talking about this story on this website?

http://washingtonpost.com.co/child-protection-service-launches-full-investigation-into-the-duggar-family/

It's a fake website. Notice the .co after the .com. The real WP website is washingtonpost.com.

There's also one for the NY Times, nytimes.com.co. which has the same stories as the fake WP account and The National Report.

Unfortunately, some people are not catching it and really think the story is true.

People is reporting "a Duggar source" said that a spinoff would work because the specials on the wedding and birth have drawn high numbers.
This is not an announcement from TLC.

To me, it sounded like a plant from the Duggar camp.

100% it's a plant or feeler to try to gauge the public's reaction to that and hope for the best.

I trust the public will let them know it's not okay. Awesome, a spinoff with the victims.

I've read that the Duggars were not shy about accepting cash "love offerings" when they made personal appearances.

I disagree that the Duggars did the best they knew how. They were arrogant enough to appeal the ruling of the Division of Children and Family Services (or whatever organization investigated and made rulings) They thought that they knew best. They lied about the services provided to the children and now it seems they underplayed the molestation too.

None of that has to do with doing the best they knew how, but it had everything to do with protecting their brand and keeping the money train on the tracks.

I can't imagine a Duggar spinoff without the parents and Josh- mostly the parents.
Or, will the the rest of the family leave Josh behind like so much roadkill?

I think the spinoff idea is more of a TLC plant. It was mentioned days ago that a spinoff was an option they were considering. TLC must be hoping for marriage drama. Don't do it Duggar girls. TLC has no scruples.

If there is a spinoff, will JimBoob demand he gets paid too? Yep. As far as I am concerned, any spinoff is tainted and advertisers should not advertise on it either. A spinoff is not a new show, just more of the same.

A walk down Memory Lane, January 2015:

More than five years since her divorce from Jon, Kate Gosselin says she would like to remarry – and her children want their mom to walk down the aisle again, too.

"My kids say it constantly," the Kate Plus 8 star, 39, tells PEOPLE. "Leah says, 'We need someone besides you to look up to.' They long for it."

Though the Celebrity Apprentice contestant adds that she'd "love to believe in love again," Gosselin isn't dating anyone right now – despite rumors that she's linked to millionaire Jeff Prescott.

"I'm like, 'Really?' " Gosselin says. "I get it. Everyone wants me to be dating. I hear it loud and clear. It just doesn't happen that easily, but I want it just as much as everyone else does."

think it's fair to say that in in the 21st century it should be common knowledge to good parents that if child molestation is going on, you need to involve licensed professionals including therapists as part of the treatment. Let's assume for argument's sake they didn't know that. Well, if you don't know what to do, they could have called someone and asked. How about his pediatrician? That would be a great place to start.
********
Well, this is why we have mandated reporters, no? They are supposed to be the "common sense" (and the law). The system failed these girls because the 'judgement call' that was made was built on lies and subterfuge by someone (JBoob), playing that very system.

I'd be very surprised if any kind of spin-off would happen. Seems that someone is just putting this out as PR to read comments and reactions and see if there is any interest in this show at all. If sponsors continue to bail, and they wouldn't have viewers, how lucrative would it be for TLC to do any kind of a show featuring any of the Duggars?

"TLC has for several years now made clear its commitment to going all in on individuals and behaviors that can answer to the description “extreme,” as in extreme poodles. And it’s made it blatantly clear that it gives no damns about whether you watch or hate watch, whether you care about who gets hurt along the way. The network isn’t the only one with a pile of human suffering in its roster, of course. “Bachelor” contestant Gia Allemand’s suicide two years ago didn’t make a dent in the franchise — and the competition genre itself is littered with a long line of dangerously not well-checked out characters and other suicide victims. But TLC has a particular consistency to its dysfunction that makes it outstanding, even in the wasteland of Lifetime’s “Born in the Wild” and everything on MTV. Don’t expect that to change. As the Hollywood Reporter notes Wednesday, “19 Kids…” “can still pull as many as 3.3 million to a telecast. And it’s one of the contributing factors to the network’s ongoing success,” with ratings “currently stronger than ‘Honey Boo Boo’ at its peak.”

The Duggar situation is being discussed again on Dr Drew, and now articles are discussing the Duggars disciplining their kids with a rod. Now, if the media attention includes more information about physical abuse of the kids by their parents, that may dovetail into media interest in Kate's abuse of her kids. That hearing is coming up soon, and even if Jon doesn't get custody, there is bound to be information that leaks.

I have to wonder what TLC's game plan will be if Jon does get custody. Maybe they will try to pull off a show with Kate and 7 of the kids, but viewers and the media will be discussing the absence of Hannah. It's not like they can pretend she never existed. The way K+8's ratings keep dropping, is it even worth their time and money to try? And what if it all blows up like the Duggar situation? Can TLC weather another storm? Are they willing to try?

Someone posted before that Figure 8 Films' site says there will be more K+8 episodes later this year. I wonder if that will happen if the ratings keep dropping. There will be 2 episodes coming up this summer. What if the ratings drop below 1 million? How bad do the ratings have to get before TLC decides it's not worth it?

FYI said...

I think it's great that all these companies are saying they won't advertise on the show. But it's easy for them to say that now because the show isn't currently airing, except for streaming on Amazon and OnDemand.

If TLC does bring the show back in the fall, (as Figure 8 indicates) they may change their minds by then. I'm glad that the Boycott FB page is saving screenshots from the advertiser's tweets.

I don't think TLC is going to make any decision now, since the season is over. They may just wait and decide over the summer.

Remember when Jon and Kate announced that they were going to divorce? TLC said that they were going on "hiatus" and would decide at a later time what to do. So the summer passed, and then in September they announced they were re-doing the show as Kate plus 8 and kicking Jon to the curb, because they deemed him the "bad guy". Now Josh is the "bad guy".

I'm sure TLC is going to take their time and weigh their options. They have 3 months to decided. They're not going to make any decision now. And if they do, they're not going to let anyone know about it yet.

The spin-off rumor was going around last year. They tried specials with Amy & Josh, Amy was boring, and Josh was a know it all. Then they start with episodes that focused on Jill & Derek, then Jessa & Ben. So TLC has been playing with the idea for some time, not making it official, but seeing if ratings were there.

And you better believe that if a spin-off does appear, Jimbob will have a hand in it. The way their family beliefs are, JimBob is the boss of the family. As I said earlier: the Duggars stated that they are a close family, so guess how many Duggars will be on the shows every week? Then Anna, the kids and Josh down the road. Just like old times, 19 kids and counting round 2. Nothing will or would change. It will be like watching younger versions of Jimbob & Michelle.

The comments are 50-50. Some say no! others say the girls did nothing so let them have a show.

I say don't!

Once the girls get married like Jessa and Jill, their Dad does not rule over them. The bible states “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” This principle is repeated in Ephesians 5:31. God’s pattern for marriage involves the “leaving” of parents and the “cleaving” to one’s mate. Marriage involves a change of allegiance. Before marriage, one’s allegiance is to one’s parents, but after marriage allegiance shifts to one’s mate. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” This principle is repeated in Ephesians 5:31. This is different this time, I think. When you look at the FB comments on TLC's page, of which there are hundreds upon hundreds on each posts, it's clear a lot of people are fans. The fans are saying, look, I absolutely adore The Little Couple but I can't watch anymore because of the Duggars. A lot of them sound really sad and will miss seeing the kids but say I just can't do it. I have never seen this sort of widespread outrage over TLC before. Quite frankly we were never be able to muster this sort of outrage from the general public toward the Gosselins. The only thing that came close was the twins' appearance on the Today show, but that was over within 48 hours.

It's one thing for people like us who are sort of students of reality tv and have been pointing out their errors for years. These are people who haven't really gotten a dog in this fight. They were just casual fans of various TLC shows and were appalled when their bubble burst. Perhaps it will blow over eventually but this is different.

I have been a little disturbed by the number of people I've seen on different blogs saying that Ben or Derick or both should beat the crap out of Josh for what he did. I agree it might make people feel better for a short time. But I don't agree with addressing one felony with another felony. We can shun Josh as a society and that will be some punishmment. It might be too late for the law to act, don't know. If he can't find a good job, can't be in politics, can't be famous and loved by many anymore, well then that's what we can do.

What the defenders seem to forget is that no one has a fundamental right to a tv show. If the Duggars lose their show, then they do. The fans can still be fans. The Duggars can still practice their religion. We just don't have to reward them. I am sure they will still make money giving speeches to other Fundamentalists.

I am disgusted by the Duggars and by Kate and many others. But I have no hope they will change. Even if every secret is revealed. For my own mental health, I cannot afford to get really angry over the transgressions of rich famous people. I feel really bad though for the nice people here who have been victims of abuse, for whom this is really upsetting.

While Josh's actions when he was a young teen are deplorable, the reality is that at that time in his eyes he paid his penance under the guidance of his father and the authorities.
IMHO the behavior of Jim Bob is the most deplorable...even more than Josh's actions, because he was the adult in this situation and knew the gravity of the situation.
To consistently throw stones at Josh is counter-productive. He is now reliving his guilt on a minute by minute basis with no real support or counseling from the people in his life that should be giving it to him. Instead, TLC is frantically working out how to save their 'cash cow'. Additionally, Josh's victims are continuing to be victimized with each report and article written about this story.
One thing we need to consider too is the mental age of the Duggar clan. They did no grow up in a worldly environment where 13 yearolds are having sex, smoking dope, and playing violent video games in their parents basement. Josh's juvenile mental state contributed to these deplorable acts because he was sheltered from the world.
Jim Bob is no different than Jim Jones with his 'cult family'. This whole thing reeks of V.C. Andrews "Flowers in the Attic" (which I remember reading way back in the 80's in middle school) and I feel badly for everyone involved.

One question I have is what type of punishment should Josh be subjected to - in light of his upbringing, his father's control, and what he has and is going through?

And I do have a connection to this type of situation as I was repeatedly molested at the age of 4 by a 19 year old male 'babysitter'. My parents did nothing however, and when they found out (I wasn't the only victim) they moved away from the neighborhood. I do understand the effects of the reliving of the actions when stories like this come up.

Yes, I posted about the wardrobe change the other day. An old article about Michelle showed her in a prairie looking dress, and it left everything to the imagination. She might as well been wearing a trash bag, there wasn't a curve to be seen!
Compared to a recent pic of Jessa and the fiance sitting on a bench, her wardrobe looked mainstream--you noticed curves, makeup, dolled up hair, curvy tanned legs, etc.
Not very 'modest'.
Michelle was also recently photographed in a North Face jacket; I hardly think she bought that at Goodwill.

Wasn't Jessa the one that had the Eupopean honeymoon? How did her hubby afford that? Mowing yards must pay well.

And while I am snarking, both girls had massive gift registries made available to the public.
I guess they adopted Kate's mantra "Who am I to say no'.

******
That's true, but in his lifetime and experience since then, it appears he hasn't grown intellectually and emotionally to embrace the concept of how he harmed his victims.
His statement was self-focused and showed remorse only for what might have happened to him if he had continued down that path.

And, think about it- he actually alluded to continuing to do it, which confirms to me that this wasn't something done out of curiosity alone.
From Josh's statement:
" I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation. We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life."

First, Josh never received counseling, and he's old enough to know the difference between actual counseling with a professional, and hammering nails.
Second, had he not been caught, would he have continued?

In other words, "playing doctor" is a self-limiting. Kids are curious and they explore, mutually, and they sate their curiosity.
This is NOT what Josh was doing.

For years now, Josh HAS to have seen the cover-up, as even he went up against Human Services? to challenge or overturn their decision.
He's known for years that what he did couldn't come to light, and as an adult, he's chosen to hide his past and worse, point his finger at others, labeling them, not him, deviant.

One question I have is what type of punishment should Josh be subjected to - in light of his upbringing, his father's control, and what he has and is going through?
******
I wouldn't call it punishment as much as owning what he did and living his life more humbly.
His penance needs to be making things right and he owes it to his victims to speak out about why he did what he did (including the reasons you enumerate) and help others young men who are and will be in his position, so that there is awareness in the cloistered community he grew up in.
It would be a triumph if Josh's mission shifted to cleaning up his own backyard, instead of pointing at the LGBT community.

I don't think anyone involved should receive jail time, and am 99.9% sure that won't be happening even if I did.

Kk said...

What is interesting (and, I think, overlooked) is that those who are railing against the disclosure of Josh's, ummmm, 'mistakes', are going after the wrong people (the "blood-thirsty media", for example). This entire debacle was obviously brought to light because someone wasn't happy with the outcome of events. SOMEONE disclosed (or pointed the media in that direction) the entire chain of events. SOMEONE knew enough to prod the media into using the FOIA to uncover what the Duggers thought was buried.

And I am willing to bet that if the Duggers hadn't so publicly flaunted their 'better-than-thou' personae throughout the years (accusing gay and TG ppl of being molesters) this revelation might not have happened at all.

It's incredible, isn't it, that their history with such things was not enough to keep them humble? Their hubris caught up with them, and too bad so sad.

Jeff Millionaire apparently responded to a reporter from Radar with this:

Nine years after the messy divorce, Prescott exclusively tells Radar that he and his ex now “get along great.”

“As for the divorce issues, most of them do not carry any merit,” he explains. “We went through some tough times that were short lived. Michelle and I get along great and have for a long time. Our children are great kids with awesome values as a result of having a good mother and a caring, loving father.”

So the guy feels the need to defend himself. I think it's a prep for more, like him on the show. Instead of pulling up old divorce documents, Radar should investigate his business dealings, bankruptcy and why he changed his name. They guy is a douche bag.

Well, at least that's something the G kids are used to. Shouldn't change their life in the least.

"Our children are great kids with awesome values as a result of having a good mother and a caring, loving father.”

Gee, their mother is "good" but their father is caring AND loving. I'll bet you there are plenty more fabulous things about him if you would just ask him. Now, a reality show with the two of them I would watch. Go for it, Schmoopy!

What about the other incidents?

You certainly implied, if not outright lied, to the nice trooper, Josh. You led him to believe that this happened only one time, when you knew it was multiple times, multiple girls.

And even now, as a grown man, when you should know better, you're STILL lying about it. Trying to minimize it to make yourself look better. Nice.

Mel said...

Tucker's Mom #62....

Exactly!!! You nailed it. Well said.

I agree that punishment isn't really the issue. It's that he hasn't yet owned what he did. He's all about trying to minimize the damage to himself from this. I'm not seeing *any* humility.

I think the problem is that he was going around publicly accusing people he didn't approve of as being child molesters, when 1) he had no factual basis to do so, and 2) he is a sexual predator himself.

Not smooth. Or ethical. Or very Christian.

To consistently throw stones at Josh is counter-productive. He is now reliving his guilt on a minute by minute basis with no real support or counseling from the people in his life that should be giving it to him.

&&&

I really don't get a sense from Josh's statements he feels guilty at all, let alone minute by minute. He seems to think it's all over and done with and he's clearly moved on. He's only upset he got CAUGHT. I don't see a single thing in any of his or his family's statements that convince me they feel badly about what happened. I think he got HUGE support from those around him. Far more than the victims ever did. It was not the correct support however. I also agree with the idea that regardless of the mistakes his parents made when he was 14, a 28 year old man is well capable of going off and getting the treatment he never got back then. At a certain point he can't blame his parents anymore and has to take personal responsibility for himself. Anyway, they can't make him get treatment now even if they wanted to. He has to seek it himself.

I have no desire to punish him. That's up to the authorities and to some extent the victims. Whatever they want to do I'll support. I want to see him get TREATMENT. Proper treatment, with licensed professionals who can do a full workup and evaluation of his current state of mind and determine whether he is safe around children in 2015. He may not be, we have no idea, because no professional has ever evaluated him. If he's safe, great, but without a professional evaluation we just don't know.

I agree that JimBoob as the parent in charge deserves a large share of the responsibility. Josh was just a child then. Josh is not a child now though.

I disagree the victims are re-victimized every time this is discussed. That implies there is something shameful or dirty about talking about the horrors of sexual abuse. That they should be hanging their heads in shame. Victims should be empowered that the public gets it and is in their corner. Not ashamed. They are not being revictimized. They are finally being heard, empowered, and defended. It is in their name millions of TLC fans have finally stopped watching and dozens of advertisers have vowed not to support their parents, and that is a huge step forward for victims of sexual abuse.

I think this is a huge reason this story has staying power. If he had kept to himself, never made statements to the public about how other people are doing this or that bad thing, just kept quietly selling used cars in Arkansas and didn't enter politics, this probably would have faded away by now. This goes for his family too, who has frequently inserted themselves into the national debate about various moral issues.

We have a long history of exposing politicians and all those who are surrounding them for the hypocrites they often are, and that has continued here, as it should. This goes way beyond one minor TLC character with a serious problem. I'm somewhat proud of the general public for not letting this one slide.

Here's the thing. If after the first time the Duggar parents learned that Josh had inappropriately touched one of his sisters, they had addressed the problem straight on, spoke with the authorities, gotten him into a good treatment program for young sexual offenders, and perhaps had him live with JimBob's parents, while also getting counseling for the girls involved -- I would have a much different response. I would still feel horrified that it happened, but at least his victims would no longer have shared the same household, he would have received intensive therapy and hopefully no longer have those compulsions, and I would feel sorry for all of them for having this made public.

I heard a little blurb on the radio coming into work today, that Hulu has dropped 19 Kids and Counting from their offerings. At this point, everyone is wondering what TLC is waiting for. Do execs there really think this will blow over with the next news cycle and everyone will forget about it? Just cancel the show already and go in search of some decent ideas for your network.

TLC has a self-sustaining product going with the Duggars. They have to lay out the money and effort into finding the next Duggar's, build the brand, and then reap the benefits.
The Duggar Show wasn't going to last forever, anyway.

In fact, I predict there will come a time when TLC will once again shift their programming to meet consumer demands and changing interests.
Recently, when I was at home during the mid-day hours, I think I had The Chew on in the background. Once that ended, a soap opera came on and I had to change the channel.
I can not stand soaps (used to be a General Hospital addict in high school!), and thought about how if anyone would have said in the say, 1970's through the turn of the century, that soaps would be arcane and not on every single major network all afternoon, they would think you were crazy!
Yet, here we are. Soaps are all but gone (at least a shadow of their former glory) and daytime talk is all the rage.

Reality tv's time will come, too.

So true.

They wouldn't even had had to go to the police themselves. Everyone is entitled to legal representation.
They could have hired an attorney to represent him/them. That person would have then shepherded this thru the justice system.

Everyone's rights would have been protected and professional treatment would have been provided to all (minor) parties involved.

I'm not very knowledgeable about family law, especially in PA, but I think Jon might be seeking sole custody of Hannah, "Sole custody indicates that one co-parent has both physical and legal custody over the child. The non-custodial co-parent will typically be given some sort of visitation rights in these cases."

If that's what he is going for, and if he is awarded sole custody of Hannah, that would mean Jon would be the parent who would decide whether Hannah has to continue to be filmed for the show, or not.

Which is why Kate will do everything in her power to try to prevent Jon from winning sole or legal custody. I just hope that the judge will actually listen to Hannah's wishes, and look at the entirety of this situation, and not just keep thinking that it's best for all children to live with Kate and be under her legal control.

Whether they want to be or not. Those girls are between a rock and a hard place. Seeking professional help will likely get them shunned by the rest of the clanand they lose their whole family until some of the siblings are old enough to break away. Staying put says that they believe the garbage they've been handed, that they caused this, that if they can't heal there is something wrong with them and they should be thanking God for making them stronger. What a horrible position to be in.
_________________________________________________
PJ.. You get it. Many should remember that the Duggar belief system is so much different than the majority. To accept the idea that anyone in the family should need counseling by anyone other than their family and church would not ever cross their minds. To do so would implode their entire faith that God alone is their savior and that every sin can be forgiven if they pray and seek guidance from Him. To admit a "character flaw" to someone outside of their circle would be to admit that God is not enough. They would be shunned forever.

It's a twisty spiral belief system that they have. We can't think like us.. We have to think like them. (and then hurry up and get the flock out of that train of thought!) Going to the actual police would have destroyed their ministry. They only went to the cop they knew to cover the bases.

I keep thinking about Josh running for public office. Is there any really hard proof other than him purchasing a home in AK. Because to me that is not really proof. I think Josh WAS making a very good salary just from his old job. Then I bet TLC was paying him for appearing on the Duggars many, many times since he got married. A lot of shows had his family on it. Jim Bob is in real estate and I think Josh may have just purchased a home in AK as an investment since he had so much cash from TLC building up. And being married with a family I bet TLC was paying Josh (not Jim Bob) for his appearances.

I say that because I could never see Josh running for any office. And of course I say this meaning BEFORE the scandal broke. If he was going to run (before scandal) then the Duggars are really, really stupid to think this scandal about Josh would not ever come out. And they may be stupid and unworldly about a lot of things but politics they are not.

They know Honey Boo Boo was cancelled immediately upon their child molester revealings. Would they risk their TLC show that they love and the millions for the certainty that Josh's past would be revealed it he ran. And if they knew his past would probably be revealed if he ran but didn't think it was that big of deal, then they are really stupid. That would speak to them not knowing or believing the seriousness of Josh's molestations.

Any does anybody have proof that Josh was going to run other than the home purchase? Thanks!

Great point about the morality clause. But like all companies they only apply that when they want somebody fired. Remember they wanted Jon gone so that is what they pulled out from his contract as legal proof to get rid of him.

I don't see or think Jon is going to sue TLC over this. For one thing, he does not know what is in the Duggar's contract. And Jon does not have the money to pursue a huge, protracted lawsuit against TLC to say "you sued me using that clause you should sue the Duggars also". I think it is a non-issue. I think Jon should concentrate on his own family and leave the Duggars alone.

As executive director of FRC Action, the political arm of the conservative-Christian Family Research Council, Josh has been rumored as a candidate himself.

Maybe someday, but not yet. Says Jim Bob and Michelle's eldest child:

"Politics is quite a game. It puts things in perspective. I'm not planning to run anytime soon. My focus is supporting those people who are doing the right thing."

While Josh Duggar's Thanksgiving video understandably fueled talk that he would be running for office, right now he's focused on helping others do just that.

And running his own household, which is an undertaking in and of itself."

Feeling comfortable about it is not an option in this faith/cult/brainwashing world. They have been raised from birth to obey instantly and with a smile at all times. If they question or rebel they can be shunned from their entire family forever. Women have no voice, defer to husbands and fathers at all times, and must smile.

I actually did. I think it was in the clips for 19 Kids etc on the TLC website. One of the little girls came whining about how she wasn't getting a turn with a ball that the kids were playing with. Michelle gave her a little lecture about how she needed to wait for her turn. Didn't question whether the "turns" were being done fairly. There was a break in the footage, so don't know if Michelle intervened or questioned what thee kids were doing, then some footage from when the girl actually did get a turn with the ball, and was happy about it.

What I find rather ironic is that these fundamentalist types seem sooo protective of their women and girls. For instance, if anyone wants to dare date their daughter or sister, they are given the absolute third degree. I remember the Duggar brothers putting I think Ben through the ringer. It was terribly awkward and IMO, completely inappropriate.

But if one of their OWN hurts a woman or girl all of a sudden it's minimized and forgiven. They don't see the irony.

Again you are thinking how we, the outsiders of this subculture think and not how the girls have been raised/punished/brainwashed into thinking and acting. Spend an hour or two looking over the Recovering Grace link above to understand what I'm trying to explain.

And yes, Josie was acting up, but she is still very young and may even have a few developmental issues resulting from her birth. Check this site and you will understand more about how the children are raised with circular logic that can never really be explained or questioned.

And maternal instincts really don't have much of a place in this subculture. Following your husband, pleasing him at all times, and bearing as many children as possible is the goal. The older children raise the smaller children and it is with them that the bond is formed. If you risk being shunned you also risk severing ties with a child/children that you yourself have raised from birth.

These women have been trapped since birth and the only way out is to leave everything and everyone behind. Better the devil you know than the one you don't sort of thing. Please visit Recovering Grace to see and read many first hand accounts and the methods of their subversive culture. I think you will come away with a much better understanding of their plight.

Their ultimate goal is to breed enough children to form a strong political base and win elections. They will circle their wagons and continue on what they believe is their destiny with God.

TLC is still evaluating if there is money to be made on the Duggars. They don't care about morality at all. HBB was cancelled because the premise of the show had run its course and it was sagging in the ratings anyway. It was strictly a financial decision. You can bet if HBB was pulling in ratings like the Duggars that TLC would have been much more hesitant to pull the plug.

If TLC thinks sponsors will continue to support the Duggar girls in a spin off series then they are going to do it. They are just buying time to see if the scandal will die down enough to continue making money.

http://www.salon.com/2015/05/28/i_couldve_been_a_duggar_wife_i_grew_up_in_the_same_church_and_the_abuse_scandal_doesnt_shock_me/Wow--the Salon piece so encapsulates the experience of living in that community.

Many of the tenets of ATI are shared with other strict sects of world religions--such as modest dress code, special garments, strict gender roles. Mormons, Orthodox Jew and Muslims (and others) all have similar principles. I may not agree with those beliefs, but even I can see that being guided by strict codes can actually make life easier. When it comes to religion, I generally have a live and let live attitude. Until lines are crossed, that is!

I don't think that the problems in ATI are the tenets themselves--it is the extreme and literal interpretation which binds women and men alike to strict roles and codes of behavior. It is that their beliefs leave no room for uniqueness, questioning, creative expression or personal interpretation--no room for being human and finding their own personal values. It is the virtual isolation from the world of critical thinking. It is the deification of mortal, very flawed men who seem to think that the way to address their own unacceptable impulses is to set rules and boundaries on everyone else. It is a social structure that, rather than providing guidelines, has strict gender roles. It is the breathtaking hypocrisy and violation of trust on the part of church leaders that perform criminal acts, and then use Satan and God as an out. It is the shifting of blame from the perpetrator to their victims, as well as the minimization of the trauma to their victims. It is the total abandonment of those who who choose a different path.

I will say this, because I don't think anyone else here has said it. There is something to be said for the fact that Josh and his parents have not denied that the events actually occurred. So, I think that they got this one thing right, because it removes some (not all) of the speculation and drawing of conclusions.

TFW's continued dismissals and denials makes the job of a journalist much harder, and I can't blame them for backing off of the abuse story in the wake of the Hoffman books. I think the failure of the book was one of timing and his own unprofessional behavior and style of writing. Had the books come out when the show was at its height and he hadn't been so obviously obsessed and taunting, it may have made a difference.

To really see how the public really feels about TLC and the shows that are represented at the block party, and maybe even do a poll to see if people would go for a Duggar spin-off. Maybe they are waiting to see how many people show up.

The Duggars last month did some charity thing at a food bank, I think where they live. The story I think was on ROL. Anyway, the article said that the Duggars fake the whole food bank. The Duggars brought food, from their home, to give away. Only five families showed up, got food, and only one family was filmed, then the Duggars took back the food they brought and left. So much for Duggar charity.

He's a perfect example of how mainstream Republicans do NOT support any of this nonsense. He also is very religious, has a lot of kids, and his wife had a public miscarriage that he was criticized about (you can google about that if you like).

But here he is saying I'm religious, I have a ton of kids, and this makes me sick. This about the VICTIMS.
________
Why did it take him 6 days to come out on this? I am sure his staff was busy polling this to ensure that he not piss off the evangelist community. He released a carefully crafted statement, that may or may not reflect his real thoughts. At least we know where Huckabee stands--given his immediate response in which he defended a child molester, he probably did not seek advice from any of his staff.

The fact that Rick Santorum came out against a self-admitted serial child molester is hardly brave or evidence that he is not pandering to the ultra-conservative right wing of the Republican party. That should have been a no-brainer, and the delayed response shows that there was probably debate and polling within his campaign as to which side is more politically advantageous. Rick Santorum is driven by pure political principles (IMO of course), which, of course, is true of most politicians. I just find his personal beliefs to be discriminatory and deplorable. I am a life-long Democrat, but I generally respect other positions as long as they don't interfere with other people's right to the same benefits enjoyed by everyone else, and to make personal choices in their own lives. I don't see how sexual politics falls within the principles of the Republican party, which stresses personal freedom. Except when it comes to sexual orientation, right to marry and reproductive rights, of course.

I absolutely hated the response from almost all the Duggars when asked what "courtship" was and they defined it as "dating with a purpose". Uh what?(I have no idea why this bugs/bugged me so much). Doesn't this imply that dating is just a triviality with no purpose?

Something to contemplate.

Remember back in the good old days when we used to contemplate our navels? Life was so simple then.

How can you be sure of that? I know him. He's a good man, and if he made this statement, carefully crafted or otherwise, no matter if it took him an hour or a month to make, then I would bet the farm (and the sheep) that this "reflects his real thoughts." Otherwise, he would have said nothing. He didn't have to.

Rick Santorum was asked in passing how he felt about the Duggars at an interview on a completely different topic, his presidential announcement. I'm not sure he even knew that question was coming. It's not like he sat on the information for five days wringing his hands what to do. It was off the cuff. I wouldn't expect him to call a press conference to announce he hates the Duggars, that would be strange and a bit awkward. But if anyone asks how he feels, he was happy to answer, and he did so.

No one said he was "brave" for denouncing the Duggars. Huh? What was said, is that his views represent how most Republicans view the situation. The tiny minority of republicans who have supported the Duggars are just that, tiny. The fact that he is a very conservative Christian doesn't mean he's some wackadoodle. I may disagree with some of his views on abortion and such, but it doesn't make him extreme. You are allowed to be conservative Christian, even very conservative, and still participate in mainstream politics productively. He kept getting elected by a liberal state that has voted Democrat in every single presidential election since 1992, so I trust the good people of Pennsylvania's judgment on him.

I will say this, because I don't think anyone else here has said it. There is something to be said for the fact that Josh and his parents have not denied that the events actually occurred. So, I think that they got this one thing right, because it removes some (not all) of the speculation and drawing of conclusions.

*******************

Did they really have a choice? The proof is right there in the police report, as well as from those of the Oprah staff/network who could have confirmed it. They would have been fools to have denied it, adding "liars" to their list of misdeeds. Just imagine how much worse this would have been if they brushed it off as tabloid rumors and gossip when the proof was right there in front of their noses.

carefully crafted or otherwise,

Right, and as I just said, it wasn't carefully crafted at all. It was a left field question asked among other questions on a completely different topic.

So they backed him for president years ago. I wouldn't expect a journalist today to even remember that much less ask him about it. I certainly didn't remember that until reminded. George Stephanopoulos actually did his job though and dug into that, and Rick responded, openly and honestly. What's more, it seems like the Duggars were big donors to Rick, as well as their friends probably. He could have just spoiled any opportunity for a number of donations from the clan and all their friends, but five little girls were far more important, as they should be.

What with the scrutiny George has been under lately for some of his contributions and such, I would be very surprised if he is going to risk giving "pre-screened" questions to candidates like you would a celeb. Too risky that it would make him look partial. I highly doubt Rick saw the question coming.

With all eyes on TLC, I wonder why has Robert suddenly gone silent? Strike while the iron is hot. It just seems odd. Sorry if this has already been mentioned. I haven't made my way through all the comments.
