Rep. Fincher's staffer resigns after criticizing Obama girls

"Children, especially the first daughters, are off limits." -Sean Spicer, RNC.

Less than a week after Elizabeth Lauten went off on Facebook about the president's teen daughters for acting bored at the annual turkey pardoning, she has stepped down.

Lauten criticized the girls' outfits as inappropriate and said they were making faces.

This is a clip CNN had been airing on TV where the reporter says the pardoning was hilarious, she encouraged everyone to watch it, and they even did slow-mo for the girls eye-rolling moments.

Point being, the girls were made into a big joke which I think for most people was all good natured. Laughing with them, or with the parents of teens, not AT them. Nonetheless, how could this clip not mortify them? What teen wants CNN to slow-mo your expressions?? It's like they didn't even think about this.

None, of course. It's a silly but harmless tradition. They reacted like typical teens. So be it. Most of us got through those years with only family photos, thank God.
Then there are those pushed onto a major morning show and told to bash their Dad.
What a world.

Ok, I take your points. A little sad that I was duped again, I guess. Bringing the girls' short skirts and eye rolling into the political game was wrong but I had hoped Lautens was sincere...but it's so a nasty in politics where anything and everything is a target.I hate the political ads that really bash the opponents. Stick to the points of your platform. And unfortunately other articles took up the slack, opinion polls were created...that's what I meant by non-story- was it that important and was it right to judge two girls? No.

Bringing over from last thread....

Just checked the TLC line up for shows to be broadcast and no signs of K+8, and Cake Boss through 12/8. Primary Shows listed most frequently are Say Yes to the Dress, 19 Kids and Counting, and the Little Couple. Hoarding, What Not to Wear, and 90 Day Fiancee appear to run second.

Who knows what is going to happen with K +8 or Cake Boss, with the recent HBB exposure. Seems to me that TLC is weighing out their choices carefully. As they should.

I will say that 90 Day Fiancee (to a lesser degree) and Hoarding:Buried Alive are both exploiting mental illness and desperation!! Neither show is worth viewing, JMO.

Hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving!! And my condolences to Franky on your sad loss.

The comment was addressed to the girls. In it, she bashed their parents, saying that they weren't good role models. That's way out of line. Kind of like what Kate does when she throws Jon under the bus. It's bad enough that she criticized the girls, but she actually had the nerve to throw in her opinion of their parents. Bad, just bad.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Midnight yes. And she was bashing teens for doing normal teen things like trying out a more risky style or finding their dad unfunny. Their skirts were short but all teens are dressing like this. Maybe the Obamas have decided to pick their battles with them and that it's not worth a firestorm over a stupid skirt. It's a perfectly reasonable parenting choice to let this one go.

Not that I care how they dressed, but remember that they are both tall and the skirts may appear shorter than they actually are. I know this from personal experience, having very long legs. Either way, they should be off limits.

Millicent said...

Lauten was wrong, wrong, wrong. I put myself into the shoes of the parent, and I would be so angry if someone publicly criticized my child and then, just for good measure, called me out on my parenting. How dare she? Disgraceful and I'm glad she resigned. What a jerk.

These two girls had no real choice in whether their dad ran for president and then got elected president. They have had to deal with being placed in the public spotlight at various appearances, and I think they do the best they can. But unless they were flipping the bird at the cameras, or doing something illegal - leave them alone.

This shows the level to which politics has degenerated in this country, and it's a disgrace. Where is this woman's common decency? She apparently has none, preferring instead to try to score some mean-spirited political points at the expense of two teenagers. I doubt she will take this opportunity to examine her motives, her beliefs, and her soul, and ask herself: Is this who I really am? Do I like myself? Have I lost my way in demonizing my political opponent that I would stoop to calling out his children for behaving like children? But I hope that part of her realizes that she needs to step back and re-connect with her humanity.

That's exactly what I thought as soon as I saw Sasha's short dress. I bet there was much angst and eye darting from staffers, but evidently, Mrs. Obama let Sasha choose what she wanted to wear.
Anyone can deduce this, so taking shots at a teen who chose to wear this to a turkey pardoning, NOT a bar, is crap.
Implying that (based on this one little vignette)Sasha and Malia show no class and the hem of their dress conveys that they don't demand respect is an affront to feminism and hints to me that Lauten understands nothing about women and their deserving of not being objectified.

Hi everyone! I feel like I've been away for a few weeks, although I have checked in from time to time. My home closed in early November, and I had 30 days to find a new place and move out. It has been hectic, to say the least. In addition to moving, we also down-sized. My son and I spent Saturday and Sunday trying to do a final clear out of the remaining "stuff" in the house and got quite a bit of it done. Thank goodness that Goodwill has a drive through drop off that is open on Sundays!

I still need to have a junk guy come haul away what remains, and I need to pack up some china to put into storage. I wanted to give it away, but my son wants to keep it.

In the meantime, we lost another family member, to multiple sclerosis. She had lived with MS for over 20 years, with the last few years spent in a nursing home. My heart aches for her children, but for her, it was a merciful release from the disease.

On another note, my son is now driving and has his own (first) car. It was very hard to see him drive off on his own that first time, and I prayed hard that he would be safe. With each passing day, it gets a little easier, and he is a good driver. The benefit to me is that I have more freedom as well -- no more school drop offs/pick ups. The insurance increase? No doubt about it -- it hurts! LOL

Some of the reasons I don't think Lauten's apology was sincere....

She never said she was sorry to the girls...just to those who were offended. Which presumably includes the girls...but still, her original message was TO them, therefore her apology needs to be TO them.

She insulted the girls' parents, too, saying they were poor role models. Where's the apology to them?

She never took responsibility...she never 'owned' what she'd said....she said she was reacting to an article she was reading, thereby saying...look! other people were saying it too! It wasn't just me! I didn't say it first! She wasn't being accountable for what *she* said.

She invoked religion inappropriately...as in see? I'm religious...I pray about stuff...that counts for something, doesn't it? Mitigates some of what I said. I mean, I prayed for *hours* about this!

A lame attempt to invoke family. Who cares what her parents think. She's a grown-ass adult. She's all ...see? I consult my parents about stuff cuz I'm all about family. That should mitigate some more of what I said.

What she said in the original post probably IS what a lot of her cronies were saying. The problem is that she publicized it. Bad, bad, bad. Never say that stuff out loud. And for that reason only, she will be forced to resign.

Can't have your staff running around saying out loud stuff she's heard around the office.

What she should have said was:

Dear Malia and Sasha,
I am so sorry for what I said to you in an earlier post. I can only imagine the hurt I must have caused you. I'm sorry.

I actually prefer adults not agonize over every stupid hemline. It's just a hemline. You can't see anything. They will get older and find their own styles and laugh at some of their outfit choices as teens. I think adults who are absolute hard asses on everything tend to create division with their kids and that's not healthy either. Also these kids are from young and hip Chicago they are not Duggars who dress dowdy.

That was my thought too. I don't see how it could take hours of prayer to realize what she posted was wrong. If it really did take hours of prayer, plus talking to her parents --- then it sounds like she really needs to get some counseling. For a grown woman not to have this basic understanding of why children should be off-limits to the type of public criticism you might direct toward a political opponent, shows that something is quite lacking in this woman's morality.

It shows we have come far in terms of people understanding why children deserve protection from things like this. The only "much ado" comment I saw was from a drive by here. Everyone else gave her the outrage she deserved for going after some teens just being teens who in the past have proven to be easily embarrassed and sensitive just like most kids their age are. I don't know...the Obamas don't ask much of their girls as far as public appearances go, (and they definitely shouldn't), but is it too much to ask a teenager to be pleasant and engaged for a televised national tradition that doesn't take very long? I don't think so. When we were younger, dad had a business and if we ever ran into any of his clients, it was always, "Smile, and be polite. Show respect." The eye rolling would have gotten us grounded. The same now goes for my children and our business. JMO.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I don't think it's too much to ask that a child be pleasant and not roll their eyes at you. But that's between the Obamas and their girls. They may very well have had a talking to them afterward. But again that's really between them and the girls and not for the public to get involved in. They don't make their parenting public and it shouldn't be fair game for some staffer to blast it. I don't see any show called Barrack and Michelle plus Two!

I agree with you- it is a double standard of us in a way. I now agree that Lautens was not sincere and her resignation will haunt her forever. She went way too far in commenting and in her comments. But I do think the Obama kids are old enough to act and dress a little more appropriately for the occasion and still be allowed to be regular kids most of the time. Being part of the First Family is an unsolicited position yet there are certain expectations.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

But the Obamas haven't tried to sell us their parenting. Kate has. I don't see it as a double standard at all. Parents that want their parenting private don't blog about it or do reality shows about it or tweet about it. Whether you're the president or the parents next door they deserve their parenting to be off limits. But if you want to put it out there and sell it as a commodity you can bet it's fair game. From Pw to Kate to the little people to mommy bloggers. Parents have a clear choice. In all cases though the kids themselves should never be attacked.

Mel said...

I just think there are times when "typical teen" doesn't cut it.

True enough. And there is a difference between public behavior and private behavior. What might be overlooked at home as typical teen behavior is not ok as public behavior. Especially when you're the president's kids. Lol.

If the woman had addressed only the behavior - eye-rolling or whatever - and not their attire, nor their parents' role modeling abilities, there probably wouldn't have been such an outcry.

And...as the communications director for a representative of the opposing party she needed to recognize that her posting is going to carry much more weight than some random woman's posting on FB. Who addressed only behavior and not a bunch of other stuff.

That was one mean-spirited post. She got a lot into those few sentences.

I think the sly dig at the Obamas was the whole point of the post. It may have been addressed to the girls, but it was really an attack on the President and First Lady. See, "not only are your policies all wrong, but you don't show enough respect for me to force your kids into the Dugger-wear and seen-but-not-heard eyes-lowered pseudo-respect that I think this solemn occasion demands." God, you'd have thought they were giggling at a funeral. It was a cheesy photo-op.

"Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar." and "...try showing a little class." are a far cry from suggesting that these young girls mind their manners and not roll their eyeballs.

A bar? Sasha is 13 years old.

She might as well have said Sasha looked like a $2 hooker. No, it wasn't said, but it sure was implied.

In the 6 years that Obama has been in office, Sasha and Malia have dutifully made appearances without incident, and in the big picture, the Obama's have allowed the public to have mere glimpses into their children's lives, which is quite different from deliberately using them for money and fame.

If this GOP staffer had suggested that the young Obama ladies could have shown better manners, I don't think this would have become the shit storm that it has.
Instead, Lauten chose to publicly scold them, and at the same time, let them know that it just isn't their fault, given their shitty parents.

I have no idea what this says about Lauten's parents, who once upon a time, had a teenage girl who was arrested for misdemeanor larceny for stealing from a Belk's department store.

I also don't like the implication that bad parenting and role modeling resulted in this. Lots of very good parents have challenging teens. Most even. It's teens for goodness sake. How would she like it if her parents were blamed for her arrest as a youth. It doesn't matter how good of a parent you are, when your daughter wants to put on a short skirt or roll her eyes she's going to do so. They may have talked to them about this after so that's another reason it's very unfair to blame poor parenting without knowing exactly what parenting happened here.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

You can really see the difference from the girls in the 2010 turkey pardon video. They thought their dad was hysterical and the younger one was swaying and smiling happily the whole time.

And then the teen years hit.

They're not bad kids they're just teens. I think Elizabeth should have thought back to all the emotions and angst teens feel and cut them some slack. They will outgrow this phase and turn out fine.

By double standard I meant that the O kids are in public because of their father's position. Not their choice. While it is vastly different, the G kids are also in 'public' b/o their parents' ahem, 'career'. Not comparing apples to oranges. I think any rude comments on either set of kids are wrong, but it happens because they are on TV etc even if only rarely for S and M .I meant we discuss the G kids and we are saying we should not discuss the O kids. We try to be respectful- like Admin blanking out the faces and no commenting on physical attributes etc.I think the O's have done a great job giving their children a normal-ish childhood. But some appearances do go along with the position and comments are inevitable. I stand by the opinion they should have behaved in a little more dignified manner; maybe the skirts a little longer. See? I did it again...!

The main reason I'm coming out of the lurk zone is to ask, respectfully, that your political views remain private. It's pretty obvious which posters are Obama supporters. It's pretty unrelated to the Gosselin saga and in my opinion, I really don't care to hear the bashing of the person who posted about the Obama girls.

It's one of the most trivial and least important topics in the news. This person didn't' commit a crime, she simply stated her opinion. She was wrong to criticize the Obama girls, but I doubt they care or will have any long term trauma over it.

Thanks for the amusing recaps, Admin, they were fun to read. But some of the most opinionated posters are simply too much. No names, but wow, some of you need to try meditation or yoga. Strident much?

Sorry if I offended anyone-I follow several political blogs and this subject doesn't belong here.

If the white painted fireplace mantle in the pic is any indication of changes made during the remodel/updating, it looks like TFW modernized and lightened things up and got rid of the natural wood on the trim in the house.

The letters are stocking hooks, don't you know? LOL! It took quite a bit of organization to line them up correctly to spell out the words. The stockings are all facing the same way, more or less, so this, too, was a creative effort.

I think the mantel looks fine. Simple, but pretty. If she thinks it's wonderful, that's all that matters. It's their fireplace and no doubt all she can really do because she is not a decorator. There was no need, however, to tweet this, and there really aren't a zillion sheeple gushing over it.

Sherri, if that is modernized for her, it's still not star quality. Our house is almost 30 years old and that is our original white mantel/marble tile/floor. We added a gas fireplace like that about 10 years ago, but it's lighter than that. We are definitely not stars or spending $$$! It'll be interesting to see what was updated if those episodes ever see the light of day!

I believe that Elizabeth Lauten posting a specific post to the Obama girls was way overboard as they are teens, and have not chosen to be a public figure. They are just teens. Politics are not easy, but she took a short cut to lambast the girls, who did not sign up for public consumption/ridicule. I don't generally comment on politics, as it is a very sensitive matter as with sex, religion and politics.

Likewise, not sure what happened with BC no longer being on Temple BOD, but is was the right thing to do IMO.

Sherri said...

*******

Kate is a Twit and Auntie Ann, thank you for the correction. I'm red-faced - I should have taken the time to do some verifying before posting. I had a snapshot in my mind of the trim and mantles in the house all still being natural wood and I was wrong. I wonder if TFW's show will ever make it into TLC's lineup and if we'll ever see the remodeling project results. For everyone's sake, I hope she hired someone to help with design decisions. lol

As for painting trim or not - it's a personal preference. My house was built around 1989 and still had the natural wood trim when we bought it in 2005. IMO, the house looked like it was stuck in the 80's (with dentil molding and stenciling in a few rooms, kinda like TFW's), so we gave the place a makeover and had all of the trim, from the window and door trim to the stairs, doors and mantles repainted a bright white. We love it now, but I'm sure some people might question why we covered up all of the wood.

Girl From Up North said...

Ok, on the Obama girls thing, I just have to say...

I think younger women, teens, now have a very healthy awareness of their bodies. Yes, some wear short skirts, some wear tight leggings, but they own it and have none of the issues that my generation had at that age (I am 50). They love their bodies, generally, and are not apologetic for that. I think it is great.

To criticize that fearlessness is terrible.

So Kate managed to drag her kids back on tv? That's horrible, I honestly never thought the day would come...again.Won't it ever end for these kids? Also, who is watching at this point? Why is TLC still interested?

Regarding the Obama girls, I don't think it was too much to ask to act politely for 10 minutes, to be dressed more apropriately and just in general to have a better attitude. "They're teenagers" is a poor excuse in my opinion. There are plenty teenagers who are respectfull and well mannered when it is asked of them, regardless of how bored they may feel.Again, it was a 10 minute ceremony, not a 3 hour talk show. That said, that lady's comment was too much and quite obviously political in nature(clearly she's anti-Obama). She should have voiced her opinion in a more civilized manner.

Also regarding the fact that the Obama girls did not choose to be famous(which is true) and that no one has any right to any opinion about them, I respectfully disagree.Barack Obama, when he decided to run for presidency, considered the public exposure did he not? Therefore he chose this public life for himself and his daughters just like Jon and Kate. Just because he doesn't exploit his daughters doesn't mean no one has the right to ever have an opinion(at least a respectful one).He choose this life for his daughters.

&&&&

You nailed it. It's just the narcissism I think.

Narcissist don't feel what normal people feel or understand normal emotions. But they see on TV or see a friend or family member how things like Christmas are done. So Kate understands there's presents involved, stockings, and hours and hours of decking the halls.

However she is clearly not grasping the cliched real meaning of the season. It's superficial. It's all about putting on the show of a decorated mantel. She has little idea what it's all really for. And I don't mean just religion, I mean the love and coming togetherness of family too.

I think that awful photo from church of the girls with candles was the epitome of her lack of understanding. If she really "got" Christmas, that photo never would have been taken because she would be too busy with her arm around her child enjoying the beautiful moment. But she could only see the superficial aspect of the candles and turned it into a photo op.

Is there a problem Tweet? Why so nasty lately?

First of all, I don't think you can assign one viewpoint to an entire blog. That's incredibly unfair to the diverse posters here whose opinions are as varied as snowflakes. We are individuals here coming together to share, one hopes in a positive manner even if we disagree. I don't appreciate the "gotch-ya" tone of your post. That's not who we are.

As far as someone's criminal history, it's too simple to have a one sized fits all answer. It depends. In the past when I have not cared about someone's criminal history who did their time, it's because it had nothing to do with current circumstances. For instance Kate's sister taking issue with Kate and explaining exactly why, specifically, is irrelevant to her husband having a run in with the law. It doesn't change anything or discrete how she feels about Kate. One has nothing to do with the other. That was brought up simply to hurt and attack the family, as revenge for speaking out, IMO, not in any serious effort to discredit her.

Or trying to use someone's rap sheet about theft or whatever, who is accusing someone of rape, to discredit them. It's such a completely different thing to Lauten that calling it apples and oranges doesn't do it justice. Now, if that rap sheet included a number of charges of PERJURY, or if there was a history of that person making false allegations, then that would be relevant. Otherwise, it's nobody's business. I see a huge difference.

Lauter accused teens of having bad parents because they stepped outside the arbitrary lines she created for them. It is absolutely 100% relevant that she too stepped out of those same exact lines as a teen. It discredits her entire proposition. Now let's say that somewhere in Lauter's history she defaulted on a mortgage or something, as an adult. Would that be relevant or should be made public? To me, no. That's a financial matter and has nothing to do with the opinion she put forth that these teens are "bad." To me, your past history of misdeeds must be relevant to what you are currently saying. Otherwise, I simply do not care.

But, if she went around saying people who default on mortgages are bad people, then it would be relevant.

Recently a local politician had voted to heavily restrict our water use. Well people dug into his records and found out he was using something like five times the average water at his family home. Is that relevant to HIM? You bet it is. Is Lauten's water usage at HER home relevant? Of course not.

If Lauten accused BC of rape, I would be the first to jump up and down and say leave her history OUT OF THIS. The absolute first.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

And just so we have the facts right, Lauten is NOT an "ex-con."

She was arrested for a misdemeanor as a minor, and her charges were dropped under a differed prosecution program for first time offenders. That does not make her a convict by any stretch of the imagination. She made a mistake as a teen as all teens did, and she obviously cooperated with a program that allowed that mistake to be forgiven. Good for her.

The point being as Paula said, it's the hypocrisy of it. She herself didn't conform to what she expects of the Obama girls. Why do the Obama girls then have to meet standards she herself did not follow?

She must be making daily runs to the UPS Store to pick up all those packages of gifts to bribe the kids. Since she never did the Santa thing, she has always made sure those kids are aware that SHE provides the goodies. It's not about religion at all.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

And by the way, the people who spoke out about BC were VICTIMS. You're talking about bringing up a VICTIM's past and trying to say it's the same as Lauten?? Huh?

Lauten is not a victim. SHE'S the aggressor. She attacked these girls. She was the nasty one.

I really am astounded that bringing up a rape victim's past could be in any way shape or form compared to the same thing as bringing up Lauten's past.

Wow. See now we're really getting into the dog days of December. You don't typically start a brand new season in the days before Christmas. People aren't in a head space to tackle a new series and this month is so busy for most people while the TV may be on, people aren't really watching as closely because they're in the kitchen or doing other work. Late December is typically a dumping ground of reruns and marathons and holiday themed movies. It seems unwise to start up the show later in the month. It should start now. Curiouser and curiouser.

I agree. I'd much rather have a young person be proud of their body than to do what some of us did as teens and hide it behind big baggy sweaters or fleeces.

If you go into any juniors section it is difficult to find long skirts these days. All they sell is that stuff. Every generation had some kind of style that parents didn't like. In my generation it was grunge and dirty. In my day you couldn't find non-grunge clothes in the juniors. Adults didn't like that. But we survived it and few of us still dress that way anymore!

It's hard to be a teen these days, even harder to do so when all of America knows your name, and I think adults riding their asses of every little thing just makes it worse. They will outgrow most of the stuff that bothers adults in due time anyway. It's the teenage way.

**************
If Christmas is filmed, it won't be through with production until long after the actual holiday. I remember seeing TLC promos around Thanksgiving, and they were showing clips of Christmas episodes of their shows. One had the Long Island Medium gal dressed as Mrs Claus and helping Santa. How far in advance did they film that in order to have the clip ready by late November?

One problem with the K+8 specials is that they are out of date. Who wants to watch the Gs go on summer vacation at Christmas? Or watch their first day of school at New Year's? It's ridiculous. Or how about a yard sale for Valentine's? TLC should have rushed them into production so they wouldn't be so ill-timed, if they really wanted an audience for them.

A couple months ago someone tweeted about K+8 coming back to TLC, and K responded that yes, they were coming back in December. She seemed giddy about it. Now she doesn't respond at all. Plus, she's posting pictures again on Twitter. She does not post pictures of anything they are filming. People have to wait and watch the episode. The pictures of Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving, and now Christmas decorations seem to mean that these things are not being filmed.

Admin, with all due respect but wouldn't this mean that Jon doesn't have the right to point his finger at Kate for exploiting the kids? Even if he did the time(he repented for exploting the 8), according to you he still shouldn't have a say in what is happening right now(kate filming the kids) because he once did it too just like Lauten can't speak against the Obama girl's attitude because she had a bad one as a teenager too. It feels like a double standard to me.

-----------------

Maybe TLC decided to postpone until after CA's episodes are aired. Kate will be on a major show, and what better way to drum up ratings after she's back in the spotlight again on a major TV network.

BTW, the way I understand it is that CA will air for 2 hours on Mondays(after the Sunday opening show), but they will be airing 2, one hour, back-to-back episodes each Monday, with 2 eliminations on Mondays. So CA's season will not be as long as it has been in the past.

Oh, I agree. The owner lives there and it should be done the way they want it. In this case, however, it was a new $660,000, 5,200 square foot home with custom cabinets done by the best of the best in the area. It was stunning. Now it just looks like every other kitchen out there and the painters didn't do a particularly good job. Even though my preference isn't oak, I would have left it as it was. I don't know, but clearly with HBB, the Cake Boss, and Kate + 8, I think TLC has been forced to make some choices. There are several new shows they are developing and promoting, so with the HBB scandal, they may have been forced to re-evaluate some of their prior choices of shows.

One can only hope, as TFW does not have the same allure she had years ago. Her show is kind of old and tired. JMO

If he were trying to hide or excuse his role that would be different and hypercritical. He has not.

I thought this was the blog that says ex-con's past crimes should not be considered, i.e., they did their time (even if they're committing crimes in the present). Surely a teenager's misadventure should be overlooked as well.
*******
When I wrote about that woman's past arrest when she was a teen, it wasn't to paint her as a criminal.
It was to point out the irony of what she wrote about the Obama girls, and the inherent hypocrisy of it all.

Tucker's Mom said...

The point being as Paula said, it's the hypocrisy of it. She herself didn't conform to what she expects of the Obama girls. Why do the Obama girls then have to meet standards she herself did not follow?
*******
Moreover, Lauten points to the Obama girls' less than appropriate wardrobe and outward demonstration of "I'm so over this" as evidence of their parents' inherent child-raising shortcomings, when certainly, by anyone's definition, shoplifting is a far cry worse.
Following this logic, if one can point to bad parenting based upon a teenagers indiscretions, then exactly how poorly did her parents rate when it comes to raising her?

That finger waggling and "tisk, tisk" mud she slung at POTUS and FLOTUS just came back in her parents' faces 10 fold.

Whoops.

Tucker's Mom said...

*******
What Lauten actually meant to do, quite effectively, is attack Pres. and Mrs. Obama. The girls were collateral damage.
The thrust of what Lauten is saying, is that left-wing liberals make shitty parents, and are shitty people, and you shouldn't trust them to raise kids, let alone be in the White House.

******
I could be wrong, but I believe Kate (or/and TLC) said that the new K+8 specials would be airing late Dec. *before* it was announced that CA was picked up, and when it would air.
I would be shocked it TLC does not air the new shows. I think they might be pushing the air date back to capitalize on Kate's appearance on CA.

I agree. I recall one time when my dad got tickets to the Ice Capades through work, and he took me and my two next youngest sisters. It was a nice thing for him to do --- but being teenagers, we thought we were too cool for Ice Capades and we did giggle a lot during the performance. My dad got irritated with us.

Looking back, I'm sorry we behaved that way. It was immature and inconsiderate. I would never behave that way now.

The teen years are trying for both parent and child. In the grand scheme of things, some eye rolling, a skirt that's perhaps a touch too short, are pretty mild teen behavior. It's not a sign that your parents have done a poor job raising you. In fact, teen rebellion is a necessary part of growing up, separating yourself from your parents, so that you can grow into who you will be as an adult. I've heard that the closer you identified with your parent(s) as a youngster, often times the harder that separation period will be as you break away to form your own identity.

Anyway, I hope this young woman has learned a valuable lesson. Sometimes in life we make very poor decisions. Fortunately for most of us, they aren't as public as this was for Ms. Lautens.

And to the person who doesn't like that we are having this discussion -- if you've been around the blog for any length of time, you know that all sorts of topics come up for discussion. While this one has a political tinge (since it was the President's daughters who were publicly chastised), I don't see it as political. I see it more as a discussion of parenting, boundaries (when is it appropriate to publicly discuss/criticize someone else's children?), lack of professionalism, etc. It just happens to involve people who are in politics.

TLC stinks said...

It could be that TLC filmed another fake Christmas like they did years ago. Maybe their Thanksgiving vacation was a Christmas fake filming? I know some of you are hoping her specials never air, but I suspect the airing will be timely to coordinate with CA. TLC rethink about filming children? No way! And even though TLC filmed old news about the Gosselins during the past months, they do not have to air that footage. I can't figure out why anyone would be interested in her life these days. The only hook can be CA and maybe TLC is hoping to draw in viewers through that.

Really when you think about, Kate will always try to occasionally pop up on TV, but in the scheme of things, she is truly washed up. I would even venture to say those fans who watched years ago will get bored quickly because those cute babies are all grown up. I am just curious to see how this all plays out: the money, Steve, abuse, etc. just like with Bill Cosby, rumors circulated for many years and then one day: BAM!

&&&&&&&&

I agree that it will air. Kate is twiddling her thumbs, ready for pounce on her Twitter and say, "NOW I can tell you. YAY!"

It's one of those raw, chilly, damp days with wet snowflakes, sleet, drizzle, freezing rain, the whole bag of mixed wintry weather...good day for staying in, wrapping gifts, and getting some decorating done. I was looking at Kate's TL, and with the exception of a few sheeple who stop by to do some butt kissing, it's really slow. It seems that many of them have left the flock. I think the Nicole person has given up, and there's a Griesl fan who keeps begging for tweets, but Kate ignores her. Some of the old diehards, like Barb and Leigh still show up to tell Kate how wonderful she is, but for the most part, many of the regulars are gone. It seems like the haters, with the exception of four or so who live there (one of whom has a very nasty mouth) and jump on random fans, are also gone. I sometimes wonder if those non-fans are like that to people in their own lives, or if they are only miserable and foul-mouthed when they can hide behind their Twitter accounts. I also wonder what would happen to Gladys if they wouldn't take her bait and totally ignore her, never responding or tweeting to or about her. She could no longer be the victim of Twitter harassment and wouldn't be the martyr in support of Kate. The two of them could walk off into the sunset together. Isn't love grand?

Millicent said...

As others have mentioned, I too have noticed that the TLC commercials for upcoming shows do not include a single mention of Kate+8. It makes me wonder if TLC hasn't made a final decision on whether to even air the episodes they filmed awhile ago (back to school shopping, plus something else). Maybe their advertisers were less than happy with the viewer numbers for the birthday episode. It's impossible to say, since I have no insider knowledge. But the fact that they aren't even mentioning Kate+8 makes me think something is up.

Perhaps because the First Daughters (or First Sons) would be used to make a negative political commentary on their father (and mother). Patsies, if you will, or scapegoats. The sins of the father would be visited upon his children, and those kids should be off limits. Lauten's comments clearly reflect that she did just that. I've noticed that there has been a person here recently with that same "got-ya" tone, commenting that a poster has a faulty memory and telling another person that "whatever floats your boat." Posters really don't appreciate that tone and for the most part, everyone on the veranda is respectful when they disagree, and sometime vehemently! There's never an excuse for blog snottiness. As stated in the posting rules, it's just more pleasant being respectful of the opinions of others. I went back and checked to see when the air date of the first special was announced. I believe People was the first one to announce with a preview clip. That was posted on May 27, and at first they said it would air as a 2 hour special on June 25. Then the next day, TLC posted the preview on their website, and changed it to two 1hour specials, airing on June 19 and June 25.

So even with the first confusion of the actual air date, the announcement was made a full 3 weeks before the first special aired on the 19th.

Yes! Allison Williams is one of the more likable characters in Girls, she does a good job. I didn't realize until recently she's Brian William's daughter. That must of been one interesting childhood. Peter Pan isn't my favorite play but it's still good, as an adult I recognize the bigger theme of change and growth that is nothing to be afraid of.

That's the appearance where she was told to stay and greet the fans, she didn't want to do it and she whispered that it wasn't part of it.

I could never figure out how she can walk with her toes hanging off the front of her shoes. Wouldn't that be uncomfortable?

That's article is from August. I sometimes wonder if the newly-reported (as of Aug) 40k per episode is per hour show, whereas the old 22.5K was per half hour show. If so, it ain't a raise.

@Kateplusmy8 just nearly peed ...luv that you have made a new series best Christmas present ever thanxxxxx xxx

Not only is she ignoring the fans who ask her about an air date, but she will not explain that this is a few specials and not a season, and not a series. That's just wrong.

Math Girl - I read that the $40K is for an hour long episode. So you're right, she didnt get a raise. She also doesn't get any more money if they break those hour episodes I to 1/2 hour episodes so the season can be stretched.
