The only difference was when they went through a "Daaaaddd plllease" moment the world got to see it, and I do agree that's not good.

Nonetheless, those girls don't seem like the type of girls who are willing to stand in front of cameras unless they darn well feel like it.
********
The Obama girls fortunately don't get paraded about for their parent's benefit, so they don't try to fake it.
They did just fine given that they looked like the last thing they wanted to do was watch their Dad pardon a turkey!
It's natural, really, to be that age and not want to be ogled by the world.

Kate's kids will never get that kind of understanding.
Watching Kate scold her kids is downright uncomfortable.

The funny thing is, Kate plays it for all it's worth, thinking she's showing the world what an amazing mother she is.

I think the Obamas have done a remarkably good job of keeping their daughters out of the lime light, and I'm sure it hasn't been easy. And even though he's the POTUS, Pres. Obama still manages to make it to at least some of the girls' sporting events without a lot of fanfare. At one time, maybe still is, he was helping to coach one daughter's basketball team.

It is great. I remember a magazine spread (Life?) about what Amy Carter has for breakfast in the White House. Even as a kid, I wondered who needs to know this?

The Clinton, the Bushes and the Obamas have done a great job protecting their children's privacy.

I know a couple of people that work at Temple. Word us BC is so ingrained in Temple and done so much to support the school and given so much financially it's going to be almost impossible to totally cut ties with him. It's akin to Penn State and JoePa. The school with never be able to be fully "rid" if him.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&

I just read an article about Massachusetts cutting ties with him even though he and his wife have contributed hundreds of millions to the school. That's quite a chunk of money. If he gave that much in contributions to that school and it decided to drop him, I wonder how much he's given to Temple that presently they're not sure what to do with him.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I watched the clip and don't see anything "not good" about their behavior. Malia was smiling and laughing when she said "nah" to petting the turkey. This is much ado about absolutely nothing.

&&&&

I must have missed the "much ado." What I saw was two teenage girls who don't think their dad is funny, which is normal, and the media pointed it out. It was sort of like a "stars, they're just like us" moment that appealed to people. It was just an observation by the media, which they have every right to do when you put your kids on T.V. I thought most media were sort of laughing "with" the Obamas, not at them. Nothing I saw was over the top.

What I thought was "not good" was not their behavior, but the fact that a typical teen moment was made public. That's too bad and I can imagine that is very embarrassing for them, and therefore I stand by my "not good" statement.

That said, I think overall the Obamas have done an excellent job protecting their girls. I know nothing about them, which is the way it should be. I agree, their privacy was protected, and if the only thing the media can say is look at how they don't think their dad is a scream, then that's not too shabby.

I was thinking the BC and Temple thing is very similar to what Penn State went through. BC really was one of the major faces of that school, and although it's not impossible to cut ties with him it will be difficult.

I can't imagine it's embarrassing for them as they didn't nothing about which to be embarrassed.

&&&

You're missing the point. It's not what THEY did. They did nothing more than act like normal teens.

It is the media calling them out that is the problem. Any psychologist can explain that teens at this age just want to be one of the group, the crowd. They don't want to be singled out or talked about like that. To be "called out" even in a manner that is not meant to be cruel, is mortifying to any but a tiny minority of teens. It's just how they are wired, and it is normal. I cannot imagine these girls are not mortified to have hte media discussing their lack of enthusiasm. They likely don't want to be discussed at all, and they also likely thought, rightly so, that no one would be talking about them given their job was to just stand there. They innocently went to this event, acted like any teen girl would act around her dad, and the media pointed it out. It's mortifying any which way you slice it.

You can tell a teen all you want they have nothing to be embarrassed about, or think to yourself this wouldn't embarrass ME (of course it doesn't, we have adult brains that are done developing) it doesn't change the fact that at this age it is a virtual certainty that they can and will be embarrassed over something like this.

"Adolescents are very easy to embarrass because this is the age of in-between when one is no longer a child but not yet an adult, and can be criticized on both fronts for either presuming to act too old or for not acting old enough. Sometimes it feels like one can’t win for losing as the young person stumbles their way to young adulthood through the trial and error process of growing up. Along the way there is much to learn, to mistake, to correct, to recover from, and to adjust to."

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

If you don't believe me about how I believe these girls are probably (probably, I don't know for SURE either for goodness sake) embarrassed about this, perhaps you will listen to their mother, who indicated they can get very embarrassed about all this fanfare, including the motorcade and their own movie theater:

When asked by host Gayle King whether the children ever get embarrassed by their parents, Michelle Obama, 47, said that, apart from finding their mother's singing and dancing cringe-inducing, Malia and Sasha, 8, especially don't like their parents visiting their school.
'They don't really want us to come to school,' she said on a tour of the White House's private East Wing. 'Because - especially the President - because when he comes for a parent-teacher conference, it's a motorcade.'....The kids don't like to use the sumptuous red velvet White House movie theatre, instead option to head to public cinemas.

Obama himself has also talked about he is careful not to embarrass the girls when he meets their friends, implying that he does indeed or could easily embarrass them. If they never got embarrassed by things easily why is he remarking about how careful he is around them, he almost sounds like he has to tip toe around them! (normal)

If just the motorcade embarrasses them or their dad meeting a friend, I can't imagine why the media doing a story about Obama teen angst wouldn't too. My opinion is they are probably embarrassed, based on the teen brain and other indications they have been easily embarrassed in the past. Your opinion is they were probably not, based on they have no reason to be I guess. I disagree. So what? Move on.

I think that's the point a lot of us were making. The girls were just being teens, except because it was done in public people jumped on it. And that's the danger of allowing children to be put on display, even if they're just standing there.

For that matter the Gosselin twins not cooperating for the Today show was not scandalous either. They just sat there and were mostly quiet. But the media jumped on it, drawing conclusions about what was going on with them (i.e. they are over being on TV and don't want to cooperate with Kate anymore) just like people have drawn conclusions about the O girls (i.e. their father embarrasses them). The only way to completely protect children from the media is simply to never put them on TV in the first place. If you do choose to take the risk and go on TV anyway, you take that chance that somebody or somebodys in the media will make hurtful remarks about you or embarrass you or call you out.

The Obama girls acted like any teens- they are not the ones who were elected so it's unfair to judge them. Their outfits and eye rolling etc were typical teen stuff. Not that it's scandalous, but it wasn't a good choice because it was just too short, and I knew she'd get negative comments about it on social media.

Wasn't Jenna Bush 22 at the time? Kind of old for those types of antics and as an adult she could have just said no to the whole campaign trail thing. One can be a rebel at 22 but as a teen you just have to stand there and listen to your dad's lame jokes and roll your eyes (especially when you're in the public spotlight). One of the most used phrases by parents is probably "don't you roll your eyes at me!". I think that the Obama's have done a good job with keeping the girls' lives private.

I hadn't seen what y'all were talking about with the Obama girls. Just saw a still photo. Probably the worst of the bunch I suppose.

Oh my. They surely were radiating sullen, weren't they. Oh boy. I just had to laugh. I actually laughed out loud.

My dad had a number of high-profile positions throughout his life and often enough his family was expected to show up at events. A lot of the events were dumb (in our teen minds, anyway), although nothing as dumb as a turkey pardoning. Lol.

I remember only once that my brothers and I pulled the stunt with the eye rolling, etc. My mother had a chat with us on the way home about the behavior she expected from us no matter how dumb the event was. That was the only time that she ever gave any inkling that she thought some events were stupid, too.

Dad didn't say anything when he got home. At supper all he said was, "I trust that won't happen again", and that was the end of it. Looking back I feel bad for how we must have embarrassed him. Oh well. We were good kids, and all of us turned out to be fine adults.

I don't think any of the above mentioned behaviors are scandalous. It's a risk you take when you put your kids on tv. They're still figuring things out.

However, I do there is a difference between the Gosselin twins being brought onto a tv show for the sole purpose of bashing their own father and the Obama girls being coerced into watching their dad pardon a turkey.

The first situation being despicable, the second just terribly hokey. The second situation not being much different than the Gosselin twins watching their mother lay in the yard after a party, complaining about how tired she was from preparing the party when everyone knows that she hadn't done much, if any, of the work. Hokey, hokey, hokey.

Eye rolling would have been ok that time!

Compare that to Kate who wanted to develop an app based on her kids, *using their real names and likenesses*, a la Diner Dash.

However the other stories I saw were far less malicious and didn't seem to be intending to attack the girls. The other stories were more like, "typical teens, lol!" I.e. as I said before, laughing with them not at them. Comments were made in good faith. Nonetheless I believe all of it was probably mortifying to a typical teenager, and I'm sorry that happened to them. Comments often made in good faith are upsetting to kids.

I wonder if this woman's employer will be as honorable. I'd sure like her boss to issue a statement saying that she has brought shame upon us, and will be moved to a less prestigious position within the organization. Except that that would probably be the height of hypocrisy. Lol.

Wow, Kate really does not like being with her kids. Who does laundry on Thanksgiving? Nobody I know.

I did! lol! Afterr the dishes were done and everyone left, I thought I'd feel much better not procrastinating and getting it done so I could enjoy the weekend. I also cleaned some closets, packed up some clothing that went to the donation center, and took the SUV to the car wash. I must have been on a therapeutic cleaning frenzy!

I have to disagree Formerly Duped. IMO, if it was heartfelt it wouldn't have already been deleted & she wouldn't have just gone private instead of dealing with the fallout for HER words & HER criticism

Exactly. I agree. I don't see anything "heartfelt" about it. There was nothing else she could do. She was under the gun, so to speak. She prayed about it? Perhaps she should have done some praying and soul searching before she went on social media and bashed those girls. I'm not buying the apology. She needs to THINK before she makes such comments. She put her foot in her mouth and then tried to remove it by issuing an apology. Maybe some bought it, but I think that quite a few people did not.

Ok, I take your points. A little sad that I was duped again, I guess. Bringing the girls' short skirts and eye rolling into the political game was wrong but I had hoped Lautens was sincere...but it's so a nasty in politics where anything and everything is a target.I hate the political ads that really bash the opponents. Stick to the points of your platform. And unfortunately other articles took up the slack, opinion polls were created...that's what I meant by non-story- was it that important and was it right to judge two girls? No.

Just checked the TLC line up for shows to be broadcast and no signs of K+8, and Cake Boss through 12/8. Primary Shows listed most frequently are Say Yes to the Dress, 19 Kids and Counting, and the Little Couple. Hoarding, What Not to Wear, and 90 Day Fiancee appear to run second.

Who knows what is going to happen with K +8 or Cake Boss, with the recent HBB exposure. Seems to me that TLC is weighing out their choices carefully. As they should.

I will say that 90 Day Fiancee (to a lesser degree) and Hoarding:Buried Alive are both exploiting mental illness and desperation!! Neither show is worth viewing, JMO.

Hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving!! And my condolences to Franky on your sad loss.

The Supreme Court is hearing a really big free speech case today about a man who made threats on FB against his wife. It's going to be interesting how they come out on this one.
