The Big Tip

Once in awhile a reality show comes along that tries to make a difference. "The Big Tip" promises to do just that by singling out people in the restaurant service industry deserving of recognition for community service or just all around do-gooders (one waitress is a foster mom, another gives all her money to a dog rescue, still another is also a firefighter). Rachael Ray will then present the waiter or waitress with a "big tip" in the form of a check.

We're not the biggest fan of chirpy Rachael Ray, her mediocre cooking skills and her ripoff garbage bowl marketed to solve a problem that never even existed, but this tear jerker is a cool idea. And it has a little bit of credibility, since Rachael started out as a waitress herself in her parents' restaurants. She works hard, owns pit bulls, and she promises not to bear offspring because she just wouldn't be a fit mother, which you have to respect. Looking forward to this one.

Sunday, Food Network. 10 p.m. or check local listings. The series premieres Sunday with promises of more episodes in the fall.

I just want to say that it not uncommon for an abuser to focus on one child in the family. From her very own words I think she has zeroed in on this little boy. Perhaps he reminds her of Jon? Perhaps he was defiant? He was not born with a want to please. This is learned behavior. I think it is more along the lines of submission. That little boy is afraid of his mother and the consequences of going against her. So if you want to say he stayed with her to please her, you bet he did.

I understand what you guys are saying. There is no proof other than Kate's own words and that was years ago.

Anyone that volatile with a defenseless toddler is going to use more force on an older child. That's just the way it is.

Dwindle - Yep, arguing with Kate's little flock of mouth breathers is an exercise in futility. Nodding in agreement seems to pacify them enough that they'll go back to their alfalfa grazing. I think the only reason Kate is even getting any airtime on tv by any network is to demonstrate just how awful a mother she really is. If they haven't figured that out by now they never will. Kate seems content with it too as long as she gets paid.

I agree. Being spanked, yanked up by your hair and thrown into a crib (how many times that happened, we'll never know) would absolutely leave his mind indelibly imprinted with a fear of his mother. What's worse is he might bring that fear into any relationship as an adult, thinking that love and fear belong together.

Kate and the fans. If you read some of their timelines, they really do think they have a personal relationship with celebrities. Many of them aren't exclusively Kate fans. I have to shake my head. A few of them tweet (or teat) to their idols, telling them that they are making oatmeal for breakfast, or going to church, or filling their pools with water. It's like they believe that the celebrity actually cares. It's a fantasy world for them, and I guess as long as it fills whatever need they have and nobody is harmed, then so be it. But as the Catfish episode showed, sometimes there are no boundaries, and these fans just get caught into this web so far that they can't work their way out. That's when you run into problems, as was clearly seen on the Catfish show.

Kiat,
I agree with your observations about Barb (137, last page):
- she is not "the Uggs lady" - that's Brenda
- her tweet wasn't really a tease because it was a follow-up to an earlier, factual tweet

I'd like to add something about Barb's tweets. I think she wasn't so much tweeting to Kate, as she was tweeting to the other sheep. And she did get appropriate and sympathetic responses from them.

I believe for some of the sheep, tweeting Kate is reaching out to a community. When people post personal things here, they aren't asking from ADMINs sympathy, they are sharing something important to them with the community of posters, and they usually get appropriate responses from them.

I think of twitter as a giant mash-up of many, many blogs. The best ways of "dividing" it into separate blogs are through recipient (@kateplusmy8) and through hashtags. In my opinion, the sheeple would do better to quit tweeting k directly and establish a hashtag for their "communal" tweets (like #welovekate or #katefans). But they clearly don't understand hashtags at all, so they haven't done this. The result is that tweets that expect a response from K (Milo's bleatings) get mixed up with tweets that are to the whole community (which is what I think Barb's was).

But the woman draws eyeballs because she's controversial - not
because she's the supermom she and her minions believe her to be.
She's in desperation mode now, and I think that will be evident in
any interview.

Since she'll need to be camera ready at the crack of dawn Monday,
I predict she'll head to NYC tomorrow. And perhaps will magnanimously allow her kids to be with their father on Father's
Day. Then again she might just have a nanny stay over with them,
just to deprive Jon (and the kids) of the pleasure.

A psychological technique used by child psychiatrists is to give the children some toys and ask them to tell a story with them.(the psychiatrist asks the child some questions throughout, well you get the point).The children often tell their real stories of abuse.Remember many moons ago, when Kate plus 8 was barely alive, they made this episode " Movie Makers" where the children had to come up with a story and characters they wanted to play? Do you remember what their story was? It was children living in an orphanage where they were forced to work all they long by an evil woman.The orphans run away to a magical land where they find some magical creatures and pirates who offer them shelter from the evil which and they live happily ever after.The Klovers can say whatever they want I do not believe this story the kids came up with is a coincidence.Long before Mady said all she's ever known is work, the kids tried, in their own way, to tell any stranger that walked in their house what their life was/is like.

From IMDB: "Mia is the average teenager - sweet, a little geeky and pretty much invisible to everyone. (...) (But suddenly she learns that she...) is in fact the heir to the throne of a European country called Genovia. Suddenly Mia's life is thrown into complete overload. She's being taught about scarves, waves and pears in order to become a perfect princess, she gets a makeover and a tough looking yet sweet bodyguard/limo driver called Joe. Things get out of hand when the media gets a hold of the story and suddenly Mia is thrust into the spotlight in both the newspapers and in school. "

I'm not sure what you are asking here. You can have cable on all of your televisions and still watch movies on them. Why wouldn't they have cable on the basement television, along with the ability to watch movies? You don't need a DVD hooked up to each television in order to watch movies. Many sets have players built right into them for movie watching, and she could get Netflix on any television. We have cable on all of our sets and can watch movies on all of them.

I just want to say that it not uncommon for an abuser to focus on one child in the family.

*****************

I have personal experience with this. I was child number 7 out of 9. My mother didn't like me and I knew it very early on. I was blamed for every, single thing that happened in my family. I had a target on my back from the very beginning because I was very outspoken about things. I marched to a different drummer and she didn't understand that. I was beaten with a belt, slapped very hard across the face, humiliated and embarrassed in front of everyone. My father knew what was going on but he, like Jon, felt helpless to do anything about it because she was 'in charge' of raising the children while he worked. My father loved me and he was my only safe place. Unfortunately, he died when I was 16. After he died, all hell broke lose with me. I went crazy with my behavior, made soooo many bad choices and was miserable and depressed for a long time. I moved out the day after I turned 18. Things got worse for me. My mother was always cold and distant towards me until the day she died 8 years ago. Let's just say I'm pushing 60 and there are memories of her that haunt me to this day. Luckily, I married well and learned from my mother how NOT to treat people. I'm a strong woman, always have been. I fear for the Gosselin's future. It ain't going to be pretty. I know.

PA Dutch Mom said...

&&&&&&&&

It will never happen. Her books are penned under Gosselin. It's her legal name. The shows were filmed under Gosselin. Nobody would know her as Kate Kreider and that would be a travesty. It's Kreider, pronounced Cry-der. Krieder would be pronounced Kree-der, rhyming with Feeder.

"Being out in the countryside, she has satellite TV"

&&&&&&&&&&&&

How do you know she doesn't have cable? We're out in the country, too, and we have cable. What's really funny is that some very remote farming areas here have cable, but some residences very close to businesses, towns, don't have service. I never could figure it out.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That is so ridiculous! That's like saying her and Jon were related to each other and got married and had kids. They did not intend for that name change to happen because it would be now #GrowingUpKreider.
Read yesterday that a Grandmother is having a baby with her Grandson!!! She is 72 and he is 27. They found a surrogate who fell for their sob story and is happy to do it for them. They live in Indiana.
Update: As a lot of you have pointed out, the dearth of detail and lack of wide pickup should engender a significant amount of skepticism about the story. But why let skepticism get in the way of wide-eyed revulsion?
I read that story, too. Isn't that incest or a felony, or does it vary by state? I know in the UK, sex between a grandparent and a grandchild is incest. The story does say that they became "lovers."
I do believe that Milo cares. She cares so passionately about Kate and only Kate. She doesn't give a rat's butt about those kids. Otherwise, she wouldn't be begging to see them dragged out on television where they are displayed as a circus act. The thing is that the children are part and parcel of all things Kate. She has to buy the whole package or she wouldn't get to see the love of her life.
Just want to differentiate 'cult' from 'fan girling'. There is NO money exchanging hands here. No one is required to give up family and loved ones to be a fan of Kate's.
Let's reserve the term 'cult' to actual, dangerous groups such as Scientology and Jim Jones' tactics.
Seems a bit pearl clutching when using a loaded term such as 'cult' for simple 'fan girling'. As always, imo.
Rainbows: Kate said the kids don't watch much TV, and the only time she has mention them watching TV is movies, their DVD's and Fullhouse DVD's in the the family room. You can have cable only in one room, which I think is her bedroom only. Cause, anytime those kids watch any show, Kate says they watch it in her room with her. This is Kate way of control. So the kids don't watch anything in the family room except movies. Kate said a while back she has a 3d TV. Can a 3d TV be turned into a regular TV with a switch or does Kate have 2 TV's?
Getoftwitter and Sleepless - both of you make good points but I'm sticking by my theory. I believe her this time. I know she lies like a Persian rug, but I really don't think that everything she tweets is a lie. The bathrooms adjoin the bedrooms, and if the kids are in the bedroom and Kate is in one of the kids' bedrooms, I would certainly think she could hear singing in the shower. Yes, you're right. Any group that gathers together can be a cult. What constitutes the cult is that the group professes extreme devotion to a person or thing. There certainly can be a cult of fans who sets the celebrity up to venerate or worship. No money needs to exchange hands and nobody needs to give up family.
Just to check myself, I looked it up:
Obsessive, especially faddish, devotion to or veneration for a person, principle, or thing;
An instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, especially as manifested by a body of admirers
If that doesn't describe the sheeple, I don't know what does.
I just want to say that it not uncommon for an abuser to focus on one child in the family.
*****************
I have personal experience with this. I was child number 7 out of 9. My mother didn't like me and I knew it very early on. I was blamed for every, single thing that happened in my family.
****************************************************************************
The scapegoat Lalala, you were the scapegoat. So sorry for what you had to endure. In my family it was my brother and when you say you "you broke lose" my theory is, well if you've been told all your life you are this, or that, or because of you....you may as well make it true.And then of course when you're in this "bad" period, you've just just proven that everything she thinks or says about you is true. She will gleefully tell the world, "see? see?"But never ever does she think that her child is behaving this way because of her abuse. It's the other way around, YOU make her do what she does to you. Glad to see/read that you did everything NOT repeat history. My brother on the other hand, he also is over 60 and his life is still a mess, all about him, estranged from his kids and it's EVERYONE else's fault.
There will be at least one Gkid (chances are more than one) who will also follow in their mother's footsteps, it's inevitable.
It's early and I must still be dreaming but I'd love to hear a genuine and honest answer about why the different standards for the G8 compared to their own family from any fan. Can they recognize the hypocrisy? Can they explain/defend it?
I have to say I agree with this. You really cannot say she just has some fans like any celeb has fans. Some of these people are extremely irrational, angry and in attack-mode. All in the name of Kate. They have stepped way out of the bubble and actually called employers, etc. It IS a cult. You don't have to all off yourselves with poison for it to be a cult. A cult can be something in which their behavior is more of a nuisance than actually violent.
As far is it being common to focus on one or a few children to abuse, I agree that is 100% true. There are numerous examples that are public record, just one being a case in Colorado from a few years ago that the news media picked up. A couple killed their little girl and buried her under their house in Colorado. She was found by some plumbers while doing work. She had been abused by them for years and at one point in New Jersey social workers were involved. They had other children who were never even touched. They were all boys, incidentally.
When the CWS show was on, Mady said she knew who Kendra was because she snuck down to the basement and watched her show, I think it was Girls Next Door, or Kendra's first reality show.
I don't think Kate ever goes up to the kids rooms unless it is to throw a fit and all their stuff down the stairs. The rooms are really small for 3 kids to be in as far as the scenes shown on CWS. Bunkbeds, a single bed, 1 dresser and a small TV. Nothing on the walls to make it personal. This is all fine, but don't brag about how much better you are and how much more you have and then show it isn't true.
At 72 probably only one in a billion women would have a viable egg perhaps even zero women.
I read once a well respected fertility doctor saying as a rule of thumb if someone is having a baby at 45 or older it is not with their own eggs. He sounded nearly willing to stake his practice on it. There will be of course rare exceptions, everyone seems to have some cousin once removed who managed to drink from the fountain of youth. Or so they HEARD through the family lore. But as a general rule, it's a donor egg or adoption or some other means.
I don't care what Kate calls her eggs.
She doesn't know the meaning of organic practice, and to be fair, it's about as clear as mud on some levels.
That said, her eggs or NOT organic and shouldn't be called such, whether she's giving them to Henry, or, using them as currency, which she is.
I just roll my eyeballs when Kate spouts about "organic", because she's way too lazy to know what that really means, let alone, implement the practice and pay good money to get certified.
I'm sure Henry just shines her on about a lot of things.
Breaking Bad Breaking News!
Woohoo! This is exciting:
**AMC's Breaking Bad ended its acclaimed five-season run last year, but the final zoom-out scene featuring antihero Walter White may not have represented what you think it did.
Bryan Cranston hinted Thursday night during an interview with Ashleigh Banfield on CNN that his character could still be alive — having possibly survived his bloody gunshot wound.
"Spoiler alert for all of you who are going to watch Breaking Bad on Netflix — shut your ears right now," Banfield warned viewers. "I'm going to ask you, really, seriously, I wasn't so sure that you died, I really wasn't. Your eyes were open and I thought, 'What if the police just take him into custody, he gets better, breaks out and just goes nuts?'"
"Hey, you never saw bags zip up or anything," Cranston quipped.
"Is he dead?" Banfield asked more directly, to which Cranston replied, "I don’t know."
Banfield continued prodding: "No movie? No nothing? No Walter White ever again?"
“Never say never," Cranston said. **
I don't know if Henry has chickens or not, but not all Amish raise chickens. You know that tweet from Paige put a Grinch-y grin on TFW's face.
She doesn't need to trash her ex - her minions will do it for her.
And not correcting them (of course admonishing them would be
out of the question) is tacit approval. Disgusting. The dude is far
from perfect - he was a willing accomplice to the exploitation of
those children. But he has expressed remorse, which gives him
a whole bunch of credits to weigh in his favor.
TFW got all up in that poor Carlos Gosselin's grill about "stealing"
her name. I say she's stolen Jon's name.
That said, her eggs or NOT organic and shouldn't be called such, whether she's giving them to Henry, or, using them as currency, which she is.
I just roll my eyeballs when Kate spouts about "organic", because she's way too lazy to know what that really means, let alone, implement the practice and pay good money to get certified.
&&&&&&&&&&&&&
She has no idea what organic means, but why should she pay money to get certified if she's really not in the organic farming business and just gives them away, or barters them away?
Now if she set up a produce stand at the end of her driveway and advertised them as "organic" eggs, then it would be a different story. If she thinks they are organic, let her think that. I doubt if anyone cares.
I don't think Growing Up Gosselin will materialize or a couple reasons.
The kids and their lives is not interesting on a level that makes them more interesting than anyone else's kids.
They've been cute, they did a lot of growing up in front of the camera, they traveled, their family imploded, then they traveled and filmed out the wazoo.
We came.
We saw.
We're just not that into you all anymore.
It's been done.
It can't be redone.
You actually can't go back- tempus fugit.
Sucks, right?
Happens to ALL of us.
The other reason I don't think this show will come to fruition is Jon.
Imagine how any network would look when the father of 8 children is saying "my kids have been filmed enough, no more".
How can you take a stance against that?
Jon is right!
150+ episodes is enough already.
The network will look like slime balls, making money off of further selling the private lives of children.
It's practically reputation suicide.
I played both roles to my kids. When they were in grade school my ex husband decided to move over 1000 miles away and only see them once a year if that. He didn't see them alot when he was close either. Now that they are grown he doesn't understand why they don't get together with him when he comes back for other family things.
I'm not arguing that she should, it's just her fantasy world once again.
She thinks if she says it's so, it is so, and this is just one more instance.
Her eggs are being used as currency, and I, for one, would not call my eggs organic if they were not.
Then again, I don't need to stroke my own ego and pretend I'm better than everyone else with my magical chicken eggs.
Kate's delusions defy logic and common sense, and this is just another example.
I'm not saying it's illegal.
It's just false.
It's one thing to grow organically, and another to actually BE organic.
Organic is not synonymous with pesticide free.
*off my soapbox now!*
Re: Alexis in the shower. The girls' shower is upstairs, away from Kate's room. How did she hear her? Didn't she once say she never goes in the girls' room? But then, she also said the kids aren't allowed in her room, so we can't really believe anything she says.
The layout of that house is so strange! Her room is on the first floor, the little kids' rooms/bathroom is on the upper level, and the twins are up a different staircase. The staircase to Mady and Cara's room is so far from hers, plus there is a door (leading outside) close to their room that she wouldn't even be able to hear from where she sleeps. They would have no trouble sneaking out (or sneaking people in) without her knowing. Don't think it won't happen as they get older. And the kids' rooms are so small. When you have 2-3 kids sharing a room, you need more space for them to move around. The kids spend so much time in the basement, but there is no door to the basement in the kitchen area.How does she monitor what they are doing from upstairs? It's all so haphazard. I wonder why she code such a strange house. Maybe she was so desperate to get Jon away from her that she grabbed the first large house she found.
This is a description of the first episode of the special from TLC's website:
"It's a busy time to be a Gosselin, even on spring break! Still spread thin by the hectic schedules of her 8 kids, Kate and clan try to plan a birthday extravaganza for the sextuplets who have reached a huge milestone: double digits."
Spring break was in March, the tups birthday in May. Are they going to spin it that they were actually planning the birthday celebration 2 whole months before the actual event, or are they going to spin it that spring break is much closer to their birthday? Considering that they filmed the birthday party Memorial Day weekend, I guess anything is possible. We all know how "real" reality TV is.
Here's a description of the 2nd episode which I found on locatetv.com:
"The family scrambles to get ready for a carnival birthday celebration, but between transforming their yard and baking there is a lot to get done. Plus, after the guests have gone home Kate has one more birthday surprise."
Seems like a repeat of the show when they had the birthday pool party, with Kate running around like crazy as the "poor Mom of 8, who does it all".
Sounds like riveting TV, doesn't it?
I don't know how it is in getoff's area, but here you can have as many televisions hooked up to cable that you want. You get one big box for one room, and one free hookup for another room; each box for other rooms is an additional cost...very minimal.
I'm still pisst that I watched at the beginning and wrote her fat checks. Oops , I meant fat checks to the cable company, who in turn gave fat checks to TLC, who in turn gave fat checks to Kate!
I can't even say your welcome Kate because she never says " thank you".
I'm old school I feel everyone can make up their own mind if they want to watch but I think it's kind of mean to tell people to "stop" expressing their opinion why people shouldn't watch. It's almost like saying shut up in a polite way.
But, Sue, if she couldn't understand why he wasn't trained in 5 days, that is something you patiently work on. A normal mother would. It sounds like it's a matter of interpretation. She didn't understand that they were not potty-trained in five days, didn't make it a mandatory five days. She thought that they SHOULD be and was annoyed when they weren't.
I won't argue the fact with you Lukebandit but I think you interpreted what was said about the potty training wrong.
