Five important lessons from 'The Armstrong Lie'

"The truth in all this is hard. Such a huge number of people wanted to believe so bad, that they hated anyone who didn't believe, and hated anyone who questioned it."

The Armstrong Lie is a documentary chronicling Lance Armstrong's comeback tour. The documentary had completed most of its filming when Lance's lies were exposed and he was subsequently banned from the sporting world. The filmmaker then went back to the cutting room floor and re-edited the film to incorporate the story of a dramatic fall from grace.

Here are five lessons to be learned from his powerful work:

1. Lying catches up eventually.

This is an obvious one. Lance was described by many as a gifted storyteller, able to craft a careful and compelling lie to sell products, and himself. If anyone was equipped to deceive, it was him. Lies piled up upon lies so effortlessly for the star that some friends said they didn't think he even knew he was lying. But a house built on sand will eventually fall, and so too did Lance's deceitful empire.

2. Suing can't always make your problems go away.

Sometimes the nice guy
finishes first in the end.
Lance used his incredible wealth and power to try to make his critics shut up, often suing or threatening lawsuits, and for many people it worked and they crawled into a black hole and disappeared. But Lance's former teammate, Frankie Andreu, and Frankie's wife Betsy, were determined to get the truth out there. They had nothing to lose. Frankie had already confessed his own wrongdoing, admitting he used performance enhancing drugs during several races, and he was too old to get back into the sport anyway. The Andreus also felt very burned by Lance. They felt that Lance's continued insistence on sticking to his lies when Frankie and many others had long ago owned up to what they did wrong, was perpetuating a dark cloud over the cycling world. Lance also used to be their close friend, and they felt betrayed that he would contradict their story and smear their names when they knew they were telling the truth (Betsy once accidentally found a cooler filled with banned substances in Lance's bus). Betsy especially was a woman of principles who deeply resented cheaters and liars. Lance didn't understand someone caring more about their principles than their money, because Lance is, quite obviously, without principles.

When Armstrong realized the Andreus weren't going to back down, he upped the ante by having some of his people threaten them. Even that didn't work. Lance also orchestrated campaigns to shut others up, like his former friend Jonathan Vaughters. Lance eventually apologized to Betsy, and whether it was sincere (many viewers will think it's not) it was an apology she accepted graciously. Betsy, with all her courage and determination, as well as her penchant for forgiveness, emerges from the documentary a key reason the house of cards fell, and the voice of morality. She is a modern day hero and whistleblower.

3. Your haters may have a point.

Armstrong chose to frame his critics as haters and liars, and tried to get rid of them through intimidation and lawsuits. Much of the media was reluctant, and scared, to believe the critics. However in the end the critics were right. If a bunch of people are jumping up and down trying to explain that something is just not the way it seems, they just may be on to something.

4. Quitting while you're ahead is often a good thing.

Quite simply, Lance got greedy. Three or four first place finishes weren't enough, he wanted more. Most Lance historians agree that had he simple stopped at the top of his game, none of this ever would have come out.

5. Journalists should never be fans too

This reminded us so much of Kate Coyne and her odd defense of all things Kate Gosselin. The filmmaker admitted he was a fan of Lance, and set about to make a documentary about his hero. The fi
Kate Coyne
lm was almost complete before the filmmaker finally got a clue that the house of cards was falling. Perhaps being so enamored with the guy prevented him from seeing the truth. As a result, he had to tell the story in hindsight. Had he been willing to open his eyes to his hero, he could have become the greatest whistleblower of them all and a hero himself. He was too busy being a fan to realize he had a Pulitzer story within his grasp. A journalist should never become so captivated by their famous subjects or the story they are telling that they miss the truth.

The Armstrong Lie is available on Netflix, Redbox, and many other outlets.

ow, I was shocked to read the comments about how sad it was to see Tori on tv talking about her marriage.

Tori is a lot like Kate. She will do anything and film anything for fame and money. The internet is awash with articles about how fake their marriage troubles are.

http://jezebel.com/did-tori-spelling-fake-a-cheating-scandal-to-land-a-new-1566619409

Why is o.k. for Tori to have tv cameras following her family as she spells it out in detail about the "affair" that her husband supposedly had. Even if it is true he had a 2 day affair, it is beyond terrible that she is filming it for their four children to view.

I even think Tori calls all the paps people and tells them were she will be at during the filming of this show. And tonight Dean said that he thought about suicide. The counselor had to step out and talk to the producers of their show to see if Lifetime could continue filming because of this disclosure. How lovely to broadcast this so his very small kids can see it play out on tv.

The one number reason I think he did not cheat is because her acting is so horrible. The scene where she was trying to get her kids off to school with no help was so fake &funny. She has nannies and help. It was all bullshit. Oh, but she had time that very morning to have a full-face professional make-up job at 7am. They are hurting for money and nobody was giving them any more reality shows so they created this storyline and then feed it to the public. She and her husband need to get real jobs just like Jon and Kate should have gotten real jobs.

Dr. Phil said shame on her for filming this garage. If he really did cheat and their marriage is/was in serious trouble, you don't bring tv cameras in to capture it all.

Admin, why were you against Kate filming the break down of her marriage on reality tv but seem to think it is fine for Tori? I don't get it. They have 4 kids from 18 months old to seven years old.

If I recall, Admin said she was channel surfing and landed on the show and happened to really like Tori. I don't think she said it was okay to film this.

I really like Tori too. As much as I had no respect for her after she had an affair with a married man and I didn't want to like her, I found her sweet and kind and fairly down-to-earth.

As for Dr. Phil, Jon said Dr. Phil wanted to film them, not help them. He was all about protecting their "brand". This is the guy who got thrown out of the hospital when he tried to counsel Brittany Spears after she was hospitalized. IMO, he's an ambulance chaser.

if you are so against filming of this breakdown of the marriage by Tori (and her husband) then why are you watching the show, enough to quote scenes in detail?
I don't have cable, so I won't even watch this garbage; however, you can't chastise Admin for 'liking' Tori, without looking at yourself and asking the question "why you endorse the show by watching it on your television?". Put on PBS instead, or watch the myriad of scripted television shows available on your regular broadcast channel. As of now you can't justify your own actions without justification for Admin as well.

There would be no need to sign daily for middle school kids. And yes, they are all individuals, but I have serious doubts that each one is the best at every subject like she claims.

***************

I don't remember her saying that all of them were the best at every subject. Perhaps she did. She comes up with the craziest stuff. What I do remember her saying is that they were all at the head of their class, and right away I went, oops...better be careful what you say here because there is no class ranking and she would not have been told that.

You commented about signing for field trips and such. That's not done on a trip by trip basis. When you submit the forms at the beginning of the year, your consent is given there.

I don't get the support for Tori S.
I get that she has a likable personality, and I think her books have been original and informative.
All of that goes down the toilet for me- now that she and that douche are putting out their failing marriage and his drippy dick's dalliances.

This is child abuse, as I see it.
The children are being filmed. Tori arranges pap opportunities, selling photos of her kids. There is mounting evidence that this storyline is being manufactured.
It's bad enough IF it's true, but if Tori and her douche are making this up, and filming it, for money, then they are the worst parents on the planet.
Well, maybe not the worst, but their parent cards should be torn up.
Now the latest is that Tori was hospitalized for 4 days.
Tori is a grown azz woman.
Get you shit together, dial down the drama, and take care of your kids.

What mother has the luxury of getting a little nap time in a hospital for 4 days, when she has 4 kids?
What father has the luxury of checking into "rehab" when they have 4 kids?

I'm so over Tori and douche's 1% problems.

BTW, in my opinion, it's NOT okay to be filming Tori's children, or anyone else's. I don't care if it's everyday life or this current mess. If the kids are in the periphery and not the main hook, I don't have a problem with it.

I've always had a problem with the Duggars, the Roloffs and many others. Quite frankly, a lot of the Tori and Dean stuff centered around her kids parties and the kids were too much of the storyline. Broke? I think not.

Oh my gosh I don't think it was fine at all! I was very disturbed by what I saw, especially her young kids and how upset they were when their dad was out of the house. I think Tori is a good person who makes bad choices. I had to change the channel!

She's an absolute joke. Her work life is absolutely charmed. She doesn't have to deal with bodily fluids, angry patients, jerk colleagues, doctors who make inappropriate comments at you, pay checks that didn't pay your overtime, and other mediocre problems of mediocre jobs. She probably sits at her free laptop, makes a few phone calls and sends a few emails that are mostly copied and pasted and calls it a day. And she has a nanny, so work isn't half so bad when you don't have to worry who is going to pick up the kids and see to it their needs are met.

She's got to be joking with this.

Who is up early and who got the kids off to school and whose workday begins? I've always noticed that when she's being intentionally vague she never uses a personal pronoun. Notice she didn't say "I'm up early to get my kids off to school and my workday begins. The sheeple will argue that she only has 149 characters to work with to which I say bullshit! She can always find enough characters when she says I cooked a great new meal and my kids all gave it a 10!!!!! What her tweet really means is that the nanny and kids are up early and the nanny got them off to school so their workday can begin. The only reason she'd be up early is to get packed so she can catch a plane to get to Kentucky if she is going to the Derby this weekend. I wonder if her Derby seats will be as good as her Demi Lovato seats...

She may have nannies, but again, I've seen her out and about I think about three times now, and NEVER did she have a nanny. Never.

I'm sure she probably does have a nanny or some kind of help, but it's absolutely true that she does at times tend to her children without a nanny. And one of those times she was heavily pregnant as I recall. We were browsing the same 2-dollar rack at a church clothing sale (random!) and her children were very well behaved. I don't like that she films her family especially during this difficult time but I'll absolutely back her up on being a hands on mom.

We had a brief discussion about news the other day and I don't follow the Mr. Money Mustache low-info diet completely but what I've tried to do is really cut back on the diarrhea of news such that I'm only spending my time with things that affect us as a society on a grand scale, or things that really enrich or empower or inspire us, make us better for having known that. For instance, a tragic story about a ship sinking and arrests made I wouldn't read anything but the headline. But a story about a new health care law, or texting law, or Walmart offering auto insurance, I would read. They have real world impact on our lives and are not just out there to drum up ratings and viewers.

The only TV news program I watch now is 60 Minutes. In any case, they had an inspirational story last Sunday about a man who helped smuggle Czech children out of the country during WWII. Now there are grandchildren and great grandchildren from these survivors. He is so humble, and they are so grateful. I kept thinking, this is the sort of person who should be the star of reality T.V. Not really, but what I'm saying is these are people to admire, be "fans" of. Instead people like Kate or Tori amass all these fans. What a world.

Tori appears to have true motherly instincts that Kate lacks. I think she's making really, really bad choices right now and everyone who talks about them on TV cringes.
I just watched a clip of last night's episode, and Dean is talking about his addiction and resisting doing a line.
Great for the kiddies to witness.
I suppose that's a step up from watching their mom cry on TV about how she can't keep their Daddy satisfied in bed.

Isn't she estranged from her mom or something? I seem to remember her not wanting their money and making her way without it.

I've only followed this vaguely so I can't remember much but I do remember her saying they were pretty broke. However I don't think that's the case now since Dean has been working quite a bit. He does that Chopped Canada thing which probably pays a pretty penny and has been licensed to the USA, more dough, and he's been a contestant on a couple other cooking shows recently. He's actually very good. They may very well have been broke in the past, especially around the time I saw her at a consignment sale, but surely they could live very well now off a Chopped salary plus their show salary. I don't think someone broke would routinely do dates at the espresso and gelato cafe in Studio City. Just getting there you're burning 10 bucks in gas, then icecream for three or four kids plus your espresso and you're looking at a 35 dollar bill just for a snack! Tori really has had real health problems. She had placenta previa with her last child, which kills people all the time, and she had to go under the knife a second time after her csection when there were complications. That's pretty much one of the last ways left people can really die from pregnancy other than toxemia.

This show was interesting, because in a way, she is fully equipped to deal with this in a way Kate never was because Kate is too much of a head case nutjob. She has good supportive friends who tell her what she needs to hear and don't coddle her. Thirty seconds with her friends and you realize they are smart, savvy, and aren't going to advise her to do anything that isn't best for her and the children. Hell if I could say the same for Kate's one "friend" or bodyguard, as I believe all they've done is enable her bad behavior. Tori's willing and able to sit down with professionals and therapists. She listens. She is open but not so much that she disrespects herself.

She has the mothering skills to help her children weather this storm. There was a moment where her son was losing it in the store and she got down on his level and talked him back down to earth in a way that was calm, respectful yet effective. I get the sense she's a bright woman, a kind heart, a good mother--with a host of self esteem issues that probably stem from prior abusive relationships she admits to, as well as her looks. I also think by virtue of her upbringing she doesn't have a good idea of what privacy should look like, and needs some help setting boundaries for herself and her children. I.e. have the confidence to know it's okay to shut the cameras off when you're crying. I wish them the best.

Anyway, every once in a while Alison Angrin (sp) will join his tour and take the reins and do all commentary for the folks taking the tour. Scott said she is an absolute peach and very down to earth. Which is why I said "pretty much." :) There are a variety of much rarer ways to die of course, like yours. Glad you're okay! My friend had an aneurism shortly after childbirth which was caused by dilating blood vessels, so that is another rarer, uncommon way.

Placenta previa and toxemia however are still quite common conditions that can be deadly, that was my point. As we are having our babies older and older, they are on the rise. Tori was 39-something, and hospitalized for the greater part of the pregnancy. They took it very seriously.

I respectfully disagree. IMHO, it should be national news. We need to see the reaction of the league, the reaction of the other owners - will they uphold the lifetime ban and force the idiot to sell, the wise, intelligent reaction of players ex. LeBron James, what will all this mean to the "constitution" of the NBA which is should There are, at least for me, many interesting aspects of this and how it will all fall out. While I am not an NBA fan, I think this goes beyond the game of basketball on number of levels. If the reaction of those around me is any gauge, I am not alone.

Agreed.
I used to watch their show off and on, way back when they were running a bed and breakfast or some such. And when they began having children and it seemed like Tori was very much into being a mother and had genuine love for her children, that I softened to her. As a fellow mom, you can relate to that.

But this latest nonsense is just that to me - complete and utter nonsense. Like you said - time to grow up Tori! Clearly they were earning a fairly decent income from their reality tv show -- too bad they didn't live well within their means and tuck away a good portion into savings. Anyone who thinks they will always have a job on television is an idiot. Be frugal, invest wisely, and then you won't have to manufacture drama when the money runs out.

As usual, the children are the ones caught in the middle. Put on stage all under the guise of "we have to make money to support our family!" The fact is, neither Tori or Dean are particularly good actors and thus not in demand for acting jobs. Seems like they ought to acknowledge they've been pretty lucky to get this far on their limited talent. Time to cast around for another career. With Tori's connections, it shouldn't be too difficult.

BTW, in my opinion, it's NOT okay to be filming Tori's children, or anyone else's. I don't care if it's everyday life or this current mess. If the kids are in the periphery and not the main hook, I don't have a problem with it.
*******
I am also not a fan of filming children for reality tv shows, and that includes having them be a regular part of cooking shows and the like. I'm thinking now of Ree Drummond and her children. I like to watch her show and her recipes are interesting, but I really wish they would dial waaaaaaay back on inclusion of the children. A recent episode showed her going to the grocery store with her two sons, and then sending them off to find various items. It was so staged, that it was unpleasant to watch. Why include that - for filler? And the store was cleared out of customers too!

You never saw Julia Child needing to prop up her shows with the inclusion of "cute kids". She was all about the cooking and she was entertainment enough. (I also especially enjoyed her later segments with Jacques Pepin.)

I heard on the news last night that SoCal is also dealing with Santa Ana winds - making the heat wave even more unpleasant. Up here north of San Francisco, we are expecting to be in the low 90's today, but then temps are supposed to slowly go back down to more normal. I closed all the blinds and pulled the curtains, left the ceiling fan going, as I left for work this morning. I also watered all the plants yesterday evening. Whew!

I don't think any of us truly understand how stressful it was for poor schmoopy to text-parent her eight from a swank hotel room in New York where a team of housekeepers make the bed and clean up your mess behind you every morning, meals are brought to the door, the spa just an elevator ride away, your hair is professionally coiffed and makeup and wardrobe experts glam you up for a day of pretending to work THEN having to get up and do the same thing over and over for three or four weeks. Imagine how taxing that must be!

Of course she needed a vacay after gorging herself on the spoils of semblant prestige.

I'll send her some money. Maybe that will help ease my guilty conscience.

There are, at least for me, many interesting aspects of this and how it will all fall out. While I am not an NBA fan, I think this goes beyond the game of basketball on number of levels. If the reaction of those around me is any gauge, I am not alone.

********

I agree. This is big news, possibly one of the biggest racism issues that has come out of pro sports for some time. The punishment (an owner banned for life in the NBA) is something that very few had expected. Predictions were that he would be fined and given suspension from his own team games, but I don't think that anyone in the general public saw this one coming. It's a big shout-out that racism such as this will not be tolerated...and his billion dollar net worth couldn't buy him out of it. In fact, commissioners are trying to figure out how to force a sale of the team and it should be interesting to see how this plays out. To think that this guy's wealth comes from all of his players, African-Americans included, on the team that he owns, and he tells his "girlfriend" not to bring them to any of his games, is the epitome of racism and hypocrisy. It came back to bite him in the butt -- big time. This isn't the first time he's gotten called out for racism, but it is the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, and enough was enough.

Tori's hospitalization - It sounds very much like she had a status migraine. They are brutal. A migraine that does.not.go.away. They are also serious. Medical intervention is necessary and if first level treatment doesn't resolve it, hospitalization is required. No picnic, I assure you. I get them now and then and have spent time in the hospital during a few. Even with small kids. I have a wonderful husband who managed to work, get the kids to school, attend after school activities, do the laundry (even iron accordian pleat school uniform skirts) and cook. He called it survival mode. Kids were always glad when I got home, said "Daddy is too serious when you are gone, Mommy"). It's easier for him now that the kids are grown, with families of their own.

Back to the status migraines - my PCP now keeps a "special cocktail" available for me and if I get there no later than day 3 it usually works. A day of bed rest in a dark, dark room with no noise and I'm back.

If this was the first status migraine for Tori, I'm sure she freaked. That being said, I don't watch the show, only found out about her hospitalization on the road runner site.

It's nasty here, and I wish for just a little bit of warmth and sun! When I was driving home last night in the heavy rain, there was a brief period when "something" hit my windshield. I thought...what in the world...and then realized it was ice pellets, two days shy of May. We won't get out of the 40s today and it's been raining since Monday night (looking for Noah and the ark to float by the house) with flood warnings. No sign of it letting up until tomorrow. This isn't just drizzle; it is a constant heavy rain that just won't quit.

That said I'm very aware of it, but I don't spend more than a few minutes on it a day. That's all you need to understand it. Basically you self-impose a cut off on stories like this in an effort to focus more on other things like the home, family, charity, and local events. It has nothing to do with not appreciating or understanding an important moment in history. Rather it's about not being consumed by it. This philosophy actually involves actively avoiding things that really do quite interest you if you're honest. Because of the time suck factor as well as the fear factor (the fear factor here being see racism is everywhere!!!) It's pretty groundbreaking and of course controversial.

Remember when hurricane Sandy hit? Well here in Georgia, there was a little boy, named Tripp Halstead who was seriously injured by a falling limb at his daycare. I doubt anyone outside of my area follows his mom on FB, but it's definitely worth a read to remind us about being grateful for our kids. One morning she dropped her vibrant 2 year old off at daycare. By that afternoon, their lives were changed forever. She shares the good & bad. She'll talk about how he smiled at her & how she's so happy to see him smile, and shares how in tears her up inside to want him to be able to talk again. She shares his little milestones in therapy & his setbacks like having to have surgery a couple of weeks ago.

Today her post had me in tears because they are losing both of their home nurses due to insurance. she wants the nurses to continue, not because she 'deserves' their help, but because she's scared. She's brutally honest about her fears & her days that she's having a hard time coping with what he's lost. She is also VERY thankful for all the extra help she has had, for all the benefits done for them, and for every person who recognizes them out in public & talks to her.

I have followed Tripp's story since the day it happened because it was local. They lived one town over & literally EVERY business/fastfood/car repair has had a least 1 day when they donate proceeds from the day to the family. Most businesses have had 2 or 3 days of donations. Thru following Tripp, it has put my view of Kate into even more perspective. Stacy Halstead shows just how greedy, entitled, snobby, egotistic, and uninvolved with her kids Kate really is for me. She has also given back more than anyone could have expected. When they reached a donation goal, she promised everything over that goal to go to another family like hers. And they DID give it. She has gone & sat with other families at the hospital Tripp was in when children she met need more surgery/care. She runs 5Ks for OTHER families in medical need. Her husband does bike rides for OTHER families. She has volunteered for every organization that helped them along their tragic journey. They received a free house remodel to make it wheelchair/handicap accessible. Both Stacy & Bill have volunteered their time to help remodel homes for others in their situation. They know they have been well taken care of by the community, and work extra hard to not just be vocal in their appreciation, but to do the same for others. Kate has never once done anything remotely like that.

The Halsteads put things into perspective & some days it's heartbreaking & other days it's another miracle milestone. for anyone who wants to read or follow or just get a feel good that there is still good out there, the page is https://www.facebook.com/TrippHalsteadUpdates

It is said he was the slumlord from hell and he would not cash rent checks from minorities, saying the checks were never received, thereby getting them evicted. This is just some of the ruthless things he is notorious for and other things when he was a lawyer. Karma does catch up in one form or another and this must be pay back time.

Cool down Berks Neighbor, please! I was simply asking Admin. a question. I mistakenly thought she thought differently about watching the show. I apologize for ASSUMING wrongly. But since you jumped all over me for watching the show that I don't agree with then perhaps all the above comments you made to me you should also make to Admin. After all she wrote that she had to change the channel it disturbed her so badly. Yet, she watched many different scenes of the program: kids missing Dad, talking with her friends, shopping with her son, therapy session.

My point is I personally do not care how much of the tv show Admin. watched. But you seem to think I am so wrong to watch a program I am against yet Admin. did the the same thing I did...watched a program she is against. So in fairness Berks Neighbor you need to ask Admin. what you asked me: " if you are so against filming of this breakdown of the marriage by Tori (and her husband) then why are you watching the show, enough to quote scenes in detail?

So Berks Neighbor why don't you get off you high horse and apologize. I did.

Re Mr. Sterling's racist comments while being owner of the LA Clippers - I guess it just depends on your point of view. Perhaps because I live in California; or perhaps because my son is now very interested in the NBA and specifically the Golden State Warriors; or perhaps it's because I have people of color within my close family group who have experienced racism's ugliness first hand - this was indeed news I was interested in and followed closely.

It did matter to me, because if this man feels people of color are inferior to him and should not be treated equally, then he has no business making a huge amount of money off those very same people. In addition to these recently released comments, Mr. Sterling has a long reputation for discrimination, including at least two lawsuits for housing discrimination. He's a bad guy. He is deserving of the public outrage and severe penalties.

But if you don't want to hear about a wealthy NBA owner's racism and mistreatment of people of color, just change the channel.

I admired the way the Clippers and other teams responded; and I got chocked up watching the Clippers/Warriors game last night and seeing the signs held up by the fans in support of the team and the sport. I think ignoring the problem will never be a true solution.

Agree- different stories interest different people.
There is no reason to listen to this story, or any story (Malaysia airplane-OMG) ad nauseam.
It's not healthy.
Not for nothing, but why aren't we hearing about Steve Utash in the media?
About the same time this story broke, Mr. Utash was driving his car in Detroit when pulling out of a gas station, he hit an 11-year old black boy on a bike.
By accident.
He stopped to give aid and make sure the boy was OK, when he was beaten nearly to death by 10-12 black men.
Oh, and they stole his wallet.

What of Mr. Utash? This is a horrific and terrifying story involving a racially motivated crime, and all we hear about is this Sterling guy all the live long day, with fists flailing and fingers pointing and panties getting all wadded up.
Where's the outrage for a white man nearly beaten to DEATH by a gang of black men?

The amount of coverage on Sterling is absurd. No one needs to hear about it all day every day, getting whipped into a frenzy.

That said, if it interests anyone, watch away, but don't try to justify it.
It's media manipulation. Smoke and mirrors. Distraction and misdirection.
Same goes for George Clooney getting engaged. I know more about his Wonder Woman fiance than I could give 2 flips about, but sure, let's keep feeding the masses this useless pablum.

Moreover, Doc Rivers went from Boston to the Clippers to coach the team. Sterling has enough faith, apparently, in Rivers to have a winning team, therefore depending on a man of color to bring in the big bucks. What he's doing is using an African American to make him wealthy (he's good enough for that), but just don't bring any of them to the games.

*************
Isn't media manipulation something we are all very aware of here? Isn't that what happens all the time, across the board, in today's media? Kate Gosselin was forcefed to the general public not only via the phony life story presented by Jon & Kate + 8, but by The View, The Today Show, DWTS, and other media outlets. We knew the real story, but the public face presented by the media was of a "harried mom dealing with a cheating spouse and trying to make ends meet."

As to the gentleman you referred to who got severely beaten - it must have made the news somewhere because you know about it. It didn't make the news in my area - probably because it didn't happen in my area. Random acts of violence happen every day across this nation. My local paper covered a story today about a golf instructor who is facing criminal charges for sexual abuse of minors, and now, solicitation of murder of those minors. You probably didn't hear that story because you're in another state.

Rcism occurs across the board. White vs black; black vs. white; white vs hispanic, etc. The main difference is that white people have historically held the power over people of color, and this continues today with people of color being much more likely to be stopped by police, much more likely to be convicted of similar crimes, and much more likely to receive harsher sentences. I'm sure some people still remember the recent affluenza story about the wealthy white kid who killed several people while drunk driving, and got off on the defense that he had led a privileged life, and so it wasn't his fault. I can about guarantee that something similar will never happen to a black kid who drives drunk and kills several people. (Although, maybe if it were Will Smith's son, he'd have a similar defense)

Media manipulation happens all the time. It's so important that every single person be a savvy consumer of media information - question what you are told, run it through your own processing center (does the story make sense? what isn't being said here? what other sources can I check to see whether I'm getting all the necessary facts? what's the context and background?) Be aware that the media is often providing their chosen slant, and never take it solely on face value. It's wise advice for life in general.

I like the article Admin linked to about tuning out much of the "news" and focusing on things that matter, and that we can control, while remaining informed to the extent we should be.
I am a bit of a news junkie and can get hooked on certain stories and events.
Katrina, for example.
I also am spending what time I do watch TV on good programming and have pretty much stopped all "reality tv"
My point about this white man who was beaten severely is that there is no balance in reporting. All we're hearing is black people railing against this Sterling guy, as if it doesn't go both ways.
Sterling is ugly inside and out, no doubt, but a man was beaten nearly to death, robbed and oh, probably set up with kid bait and this only gets local coverage?
Where's Obama? Where's Sharpton?
Commenting on the hurt feelings of mega rich black men who (understandably) were offended by what a rich white guy said.

A television career marketing your kids 10 years later simply implies imply there was never been any plan put in place post filming the kids so they could have a life in private. In many reality tv shows, we are seeing time and time again why filming kids is not a great idea. Never mind relying on this as your sole income, at the expense of your kids.

Don't agree that Tori should continue filming the kids through this mess. Take a break from filming for God's sakes. Or permanently and support the kids off reality tv.

http://www.classicalite.com/articles/7851/20140430/broke-jon-kate-gosselin-abandon-kids-apprentice-plastic-surgery-paid-twins-money.htm

Here's the article...

Some new disturbing reports suggest that Jon and Kate Gosselin, who are both broke, have chosen to abandon their children, while Kate appears on Celebrity Apprentice. But that's not even the worst part of the allegations, as leading gossip sites claim that Kate has had multiple plastic surgery procedures that were all financed with money from her children's accounts. You can check out the photo links below to judge for yourself.

Let's face it, no one is nominating either Jon or Kate Gosselin for parent of the year. And that's for a very good reason. According to one source who spoke with Radar Online, on the rare occasion that Kate is actually honest about her filming schedule, Jon still doesn't want to see all of those annoying kids:

"Jon drops them off at the house, and the nanny takes them at the front door. He usually doesn't know if Kate is around or not, and he doesn't know her shooting schedule. She really keeps Jon in the dark about a lot of things. But it's safe to say Kate was not with them last week, because Jon is. Kate actually asked Jon to help out more with the kids while she does Celeb Apprentice, but he refused. He only wanted to take them his usual one day a week."

It is also reported that Kate has undergone multiple plastic surgeries, in order to recapture her long-gone youth. According to a plastic surgeon who spoke with Radar at a later time, Kate could have had major work done (photos):

"Judging by low brows and less lines between the brows, Botox is very likely...The makeup makes it a bit challenging to say accurately, but a skin tightening light pulse or serial lasers, chemical peels as well as a neck lift are all possibilities to explain the tighter jawline. Fillers or fat transfer also are likely making her overall cheeks and face softer as well."

In regards to who financed the surgeries, Star is claiming that Kate took the money from her children, and paid outrageous sums:

"[Kate] failed to mention that she paid for an apparent face-lift (about $35,000); breast implants ($15,000); and expensive hair appointments (she dropped $2,000 on one recent visit, says the insider)."

Agree, racist moron. Not getting into the right or wrong of it, but I'm all for a no tolerance policy on racism. Still, it needs to be done in a manner that is legal, following our laws, rules and regulations, with due process for the accused.

I am very concerned about the lack of due process here, the use of a completely and utterly illegal tape to achieve a desired result, the gross invasion of privacy by TMZ, and the potentially illegal forced sale. It's kind of ironic in that it's a bit of a lynch mob, just hang em high and ask questions later. Even if we're getting around the law to do so, like accept an illegal tape as evidence. Whether the person is guilty or not, I think most people believe lynch mobs are not the way civilized societies handle wrongdoing. We're on a slippery slope, and everyone is so excited to "get this racist jerk" that we're losing sight of something much bigger here.

You can even hear from the tape that his girlfriend was respectfully challenging him on his ideas, for instance asking him how his views are anything different than what was done to the Jews. He is Jewish. You could tell he had a hard time explaining the distinction. We need to be free to work through those thoughts in private. That is not the same thing, whatsoever, as saying the same thing in public, or acting out those thoughts in public, which he may have done. But the thoughts themselves in a private home, says Razamatazz, should be off limits.

If our private homes are suddenly a free for all, we are treading into a dangerous territory. Just taking a simple example, a teacher may curse in her private home all the time, but never does so around her students, which is not permitted by her school. Is she now fired when we find a tape of her cursing in her home because turns out all along she has a potty mouth, and maybe, maybe she might not be able to hold back at some point in front of her students? We need to be careful here in our quest to immediately shut down a racist pig. That is very very right, but how it's being done is potentially very very wrong, and we cannot lose sight of that.

Sorry, this is pretty long, but it's a comment someone made on a local message board that I read. Fits in with the discussion here.
The only thing I disagree with is that Sterling is a private business owner, he is not-he is a franchisee.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
As usual, the media is milking this for all the ratings possible as they have absolutely nothing else they can keep saying about the missing airliner. I think everyone is jumping on the bandwagon against this guy. It's one thing if he violated a condition or clause of owning an NBA team, but nobody has been able to step up and say so. Not even Commissioner Silver as all he did was strongly encourage owners to vote against this guy. If he hasn't violated a clause, he's still a private business owner. Who are all these people to think it's their right to force someone to sell his business because they don't agree with his views? While myself and others may not agree with his views, he's still entitled to his own feelings and opinions. It's not like he made an announcement to the team, owners, or media that he didn't want this girl to bring blacks to the games. The man was having a private conversation in a free country. In the modern PC world that we live in, his choice of words and views certainly don't pass muster, but it's not a crime to be an asshole. If you want to force any private individual that owns a business in this country to sell if you or others don't agree with them; well that's a pretty slippery slope my friends. I don't agree with opinions of many politicians that own businesses, or lifestyles and views of actors, athletes, entertainers/celebrities that have restaurants, car dealerships or other ventures. Therefore, I can by choice not support that business. The sponsors have every right to pull their money. Fans have every right to not buy tickets. But to force a sale because his private opinions aren't PC enough for you is just wrong.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
BTW, I also think he's a racist pig and I'm not defending him as a person, just pointing out that I agree that this could open up a big can of worms concerning privacy.

Wow Daniella, such good points that other poster made, thank for sharing. What food for thought.

I think everyone has said and done things in our home we would not do in public. Be it as simple as picking your nose, or sex with our partner, or venting about a colleague or boss. Those things are private, and may be, and quite frankly often ARE, inappropriate outside a private setting. It's NOT inappropriate however to do so quietly, privately. You're not supposed to be TAPED doing so!

That's the point, it's your private home. This is a treasured and sacred place that was severely violated this week in the name of some kind of greater good. I happen to think privacy is just as much of a value to treasure as living in a society that does not judge based on color. This is a case of violating one sacred right in order to make a point about another sacred right, and it's disturbing. Especially since privacy has eroded and eroded the past few years. Then we add in the layer of this idea we have become so PC that we are even willing to illegally strip someone of something they own just to make them tow the line. So next time he wants to steal someone else's property illegally how will we explain it's not okay? How do we explain this to our kids? He is a bad, bad man (true) so it's okay to violate his rights? I can't stomach that. All the more reason to give him the full benefit of his rights. Due process only works when you give rights to the absolute scum of society, I believe this with all my heart and soul. It's not due process when only good people are getting it! And one of these days the scum you don't want to give due process too is actually innocent. Not this guy, but what about the next one, or the next?? This is scarier and scarier the more I think about it. I'm disturbed.

I also completely agree that the media is USING this guy because they saw that the plane story was getting boring as wild goose chases eventually are, the ferry story was too sad because it involved children so no one could handle reading about it anymore, and they noticed the hits went up when they sent the lynch mob out to crucify an ignorant and racist senior citizen ranting in his home. Timely, since it feeds right into the point the group of us partaking in a low information diet were making! Boy does this prove my point on that one, this stuff is not good for your health.

Here's what I think. If I am a wealthy person, and I own a sports team that is comprised of people of all colors, then I think maybe I ought to be careful of what I say about people of color - wherever I am, and most certainly if I'm talking to a woman who is half black herself. The man is not just a racist - he's a dumb ass. Karma is a bitch and I don't feel one bit sorry for seeing it land on him.

If a person is saying something in private that they might be ashamed of if it were repeated in public, maybe they need to think about that a little while.

The analogy of a teacher cursing in private was used in the Sterling discussion. Let's say that one has a child in elementary school. The teacher is an unmarried male, exemplary in the classroom, kids and parents love him; he's won the Teacher of the Year award. His housekeeper finds a collection of young girls' underwear under his pillow, and some photos of him caressing them, perhaps even a videotape. He has what some would consider a private fetish. He likes little kids' panties.

Would you, as a parent of a young girl, want to know this about the teacher? It was all done in the privacy of his own home. Should the housekeeper report this to the powers that be?

Yes, this man is racist scum. We all agree, we all "get" that. However, as far as I can tell he has not broken any laws or harmed anyone with his views. We all have an expectation of privacy in our own home - ALL of us. Once that is breached its bad news for everyone. This is a straw man argument and false.
No one has said the issue is privacy. What has been posited is that privacy is AN issue.
The issue of privacy does not replace the issue of racism, rather, it co-exists and should be debated or at least, addressed.
My question that I addressed here is whether or not it's legal to record someone in the privacy of their own home, without their knowledge, which apparently, this mistress did.
She baited him into saying something- it wasn't hard to do, obviously, given his racism and bigotry, nonetheless, this smells of a revenge plot and entrapment.
For the good of everyone's right to privacy, I think this issue is relevant.
This in no weigh diminishes what this pig has done for most of his life and in no way absolves him.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "harmed." Physically, of course not. Emotionally? I think so. His views are an insult to the NBA, to the team itself, to the coach, to the fans, both black and white, who attend the games. In that sense then, yes, I think that they were harmed, especially the black players and the coach who who essentially are his "employees." Knowing his feelings about African-Americans would be, in this case, an emotional harm.

The discussion has been of privacy violation within the home. Let's say that this man and a friend were having a conversation at the game...in their seats. He told his friend that he really didn't want blacks coming to his game. Someone in back of them overheard the conversation and reported it to the front office or to the media. It was a private conversation, but it was in the public arena. Is this considered a violation of privacy, or is it only privacy when it's done within the confines of the home?

Of course, it's a crime.
This is not a good analogy.
Being racist is not a crime.
It may, however, violate terms of employment.
Still, not a crime.

There's really no comparison of finding out that someone is committing a crime in their home (child porn, child fetish, growing pot) and being racist.
Oh, by the way, you should report the crime to the police and let THEM take the proper course of action, not play Dick Tracey or some femme fatale Nikita.
How she's coming out of this smelling like a rose is beyond me.
She secretly recorded this guy and sold the tapes to TMZ for 30 pieces of silver.

And Stiviano also has had way too many procedures. She kind of looks like a man in drag.

I hate agreeing with him too. I guess we'll have to wait for new laws to be drafted to prevent this kind of thing. Or enforce existing ones. The rights violation SHOULD be the bigger story. The fact that he's a racist is not news.

Forcing him to sell his team? In this case, I think it would be a wise move to sell because the league could kick him out and his business would collapse. I think that's within the rights of the NBA, but forcing him to sell in not for any noble reason, it's to protect the league and there's something smelly in that. We want your team, but we don't want you. We want all the money involved, but we have to look like the good guys to the general public. There's nothing noble about protecting your bottom line. Pearl clutching at it's finest.

Now, I wish Mr. Jazz Hands would work on making laws about "revenge" (porn or otherwise) websites instead of just accepting that they are a fact of life.

Perhaps a bit of foreshadowing by Admin, but today's latest wrinkle in the Sterling case involves, you guessed it, the estranged Mrs. Sterling caught on tape, cursing like a sailor.
It looks like a real manipulator is Sterling's mistress and this is playing out just perfectly for her.
You want to take my hard earned (on my back and knees) lavish gifts away from me, Mrs. Sterling?
OK, let's play.
First, take the husband down. Then, the wife.
All the while, the public thinks the issue is racism.
It's ONE issue, but let's look at the why here. Why is this 81-year old man, a well-known bigot, racist and slum lord, being exposed NOW?
I'm guessing it has a whole lot to do with a mistress being threatened, who knows these people's weaknesses, and has their trust.
If she's going down, she's taking her Sugar Daddy and his litigious wife with her.

We are talking about privacy in the sanctity of your own home.

I don't see the need for contrived scenarios to try to prove your point.

In public, you can have someone eavesdrop, or take your photo.
In a theater, or arena, you must assume that the person sitting 12 inches behind you can hear what you're saying.
The arena or theater may ban photography or video, but can't ban your speaking (when appropriate, not during monologues!)

Again, not the same.

I understand people have been evicted due to his actions, and I don't know how he's never been caught selectively culling minorities out of his buildings.

What is at issue is the emotional pain he's caused, and it remains to be seen if he'll be issuing an apology.

She looks like a rae rae.
No offense to rae rae's.

Mrs. Sterling tolerated the mistress(es) all these years because she doesn't want to lose vast wealth and probably, moreover, her social standing.
People do this all the time.
I think what started to piss her off was the amount of money the husband was spending- millions- and she was having none of HER money go to supporting that gold digger.
So she sued the mistress and now, inexplicably, hours upon hours of tapes come out.
Hmmm.... what a coinkydink

This could be a great strategy, and ballsy, too.
Mrs. Sterling wants to remain Mrs. Sterling and if she can hang in there a little while, she might just outlive that bastard and get everything- and be able to cut off every single person who's been sponging off of them all these years.
The mistress then sets her sights on ruining Mr. Sterling, hitting him hard financially, and even harder socially.
He's a pariah.
Justifiably so.
Now that she's whipped everyone into a racial frenzy, knowing damn well that race is a lightning rod issue in America, she just sits back and waits for Silverman to lose everything he loves most dearly, most of all, his status in life.
But why stop there?
Let's sully the wife who's suing her, by releasing tapes of her, let's just say, not acting as someone of her social ranking and ersatz refinement.
That puts the screws to the woman who wants to sue her and take away what she's worked so hard for (cough, cough).

I can clearly see how the media, and by extension, the people, are being manipulated to meet and end.

Exactly. Yet we broke laws to expose him. CA is a two party consent state. He was taped illegally in his private home. (She claims he knew-yeah right.) Not in public, not on duty, not even in his front yard. Inside his house! It may, probably is, illegal to make him sell the team.

This should scare people. This is all okay as long as he's a bad man? So, is a lynch mob okay too as long as the person is bad? What if someone thinks YOU'RE bad? It's okay with you that they can just take you down illegally? It's really not unlike all the "outings" where people would call workplaces and such. Harassment and tortious interference with employment is okay to them, as long as they believe the person they are outing is bad. There was no limits to that, just like here.

Not in my book. Take him down, absolutely. But do so LEGALLY. This is essential, essential, to a civilized, modern, first world society.

That's a totally different analogy. That puts your child at actual risk of being molested. Sterling was not putting anyone on his team at risk of actual harm, other than hurt feelings. He is a racist, not a murderer or rapist. If he KILLED his wife in the privacy of his him, that would be completely different! He didn't. He manipulated the English language to say things that made people upset. That's it.

Still, even the pervert teacher needs his due process. He needs to have a fair chance to defend himself. And in a court of law, if they obtained any of those suspicious items illegally, they wouldn't come into court. Doesn't matter how much of a pervert he is.

The law applies to racists, and to child molesters too. That's how we function in a manner that isn't an 18th century tar and feathering.

The link in the tweet goes to an article written by Hailey. You can read it here:

http://www.fashionnstyle.com/articles/18976/20140430/hailey-glassmans-full-disclosure-tribeca-film-festival-the-shorty-awards-and-more-exclusive-photos.htm

Trying to figure out if Hailey is being friendly to Kate, or is trying to give her advice. Part of her article states:

"In life no matter what happens to you or what your path is you need to make the best of it. We can only control so much, when a situation happens you either make the best of it or be negative, either way the outcome is the same but your outlook can be different.

My journey so far hasn't always been easy nor have I taken the "elevator" to success, more like the stairs! But as a result my legs are way stronger.

I say, "If you don't like something in your life, change it." Albert Einstein once defined insanity as, "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"... Well he made a great point. You have one life, live it, learn it, and love it. Be you and be you to the fullest. Have confidence and don't look to others for self-validation. Know who you are and like the great Dr. Seuss says "Those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

It could also be a dig at Kate, because Hailey also writes about she met Rob Shuter(who lately seems to be in Jon's camp):

"I ran into a good friend of mine VH1's Rob "Naughty But Nice" Shuter and you could say there's double trouble whenever he and I get together. He gave me the best compliment anyone has ever given me. He said, "We've all been waiting for you to fail since the Gosselin fiasco 5 years ago but you got through it, have a reputable name in the industry professionally. The media was nasty and you Hailey came out a winner, cheers". I thanked him and told him "Put me on the VH1 "Gossip Table"..." We'll see!"

Kate hasn't responded to Hailey, but, of course, good ol' Milo did. I guess she thinks that Hailey is one of Kate's BFF's and just has to reply:

Fired Up 4 Kate ‏@MiloandJack · 13h
@hAiLeYgLaSsMaN1 @Kateplusmy8 "Climbing stairs 2success rather than taking the elevator" makes U stronger! Well said. #LessonsLearned :)

It was a private conversation, but it was in the public arena. Is this considered a violation of privacy, or is it only privacy when it's done within the confines of the home?

***

YES!

In your example, that's not a privacy violation. You don't have an expectation of privacy at a public basketball game. You don't come there and discuss your racist bigoted views, your relationship problems, or anything else you don't want anyone else to overhear or it's on you.

The law is really quite clear about what is private and what is not, and your personal home, your kitchen, is the most sacred, private place in the world. I mean the Supreme Court has toiled and toiled over cases where you can't even stand outside someones home with an infared camera looking for marijuana plants because that's a violation of home privacy. Even though you were standing OUTSIDE, you were invading someone's inside house. Bottom line they ruled you can't even do that!! Without a warrant that is. Privacy in the home is absolutely fundamental, and over and over our courts have said so. There is no question this was a constitutional violation of his privacy. And if we don't give it to him, then we can't ask for it ourselves.

If this occurred at a game, I'd be on board with this, 100%. It didn't. It occurred in his kitchen apparently, as she was pouring him some juice. You can't listen to that conversation and you can't put a thermal imaging camera on it either. But the moment he steps out of that home, he's fair game. So all the things made public about what a jerk he is to the public, in public, like the slumlord stuff, fair game. His kitchen: off limits.

Children First said...

++++

I don't think that it is. The teacher in the analogy has not committed any crime; he has not put any child at risk. He has not molested anyone. He enjoys underwear in the privacy of his own home. He has't harmed any child in the process of obtaining the underwear. Perhaps he purchases the items in the store. There is no indication that he would molest anyone. No crime has been committed, Privacy is privacy, and it's been said here that what you do in your own home should remain private, as long as nobody is being harmed.

That was exactly Razamataz's excellent point though.

He was saying our home is our testing ground, our test flight, where we "try out" ideas, bouncing them off our family, hearing them out loud, working through them.

How many of us have said to our husbands, honey I'm having a conflict with so and so, what would you think if I said this to them? Then hubby says I wouldn't say that!

Trying out ideas in the private HOME is what it's there for. Even ideas others don't like. Just because you do a test run in the home doesn't mean you would dream of doing so outside the home.

&&&&

Finding child's underwear in a teacher's home and finding out that he smells them is grounds for firing and does put children at risk. It shows he has a propensity to be sexually attracted to small children. It would need to be fully investigated, because it DOES put children at risk if he is attracted to children. We don't know that that's not the only thing he does. We don't know he wouldn't take it to the next step. You're just telling us that. An average person would not know that, and again, it would need to be investigated. It's just a bad analogy, because you're talking about someone who works with children in a capacity where he has close enough access to actually harm them. Then you're talking about someone who is sexually attracted to something from children. You could access his home with a proper warrant, and a judge would probably give it to you.

Again, it's not that no one can ever come into your home. It's that unless there is a WARRANT no one could come in. You could get a warrant for a teacher smelling children's underwear, under the assumption you could very well find many other items. You could not get a warrant because someone said they don't like black people on their wife's instagram. Apples and oranges.

No doubt there are pockets of racism. Overall, I believe we are a progressive society. The media likes to create conflict out of nothing. The overwhelming response to this guy was universal. Racist pig, get him off the bench. You think that would happen in 1966? It's not the 60's anymore, people don't tolerate things like this anymore, period, and I'm tired of being manipulated into believing there is a great conflict going on here because that sells newspapers. If it were such a great conflict, where are the people defending his comments? The public has spoken, and shown within a matter of 48 hours this behavior has no place in 2014. Anything else the media tells you is utter manipulation. If anything people, like me and Razamataz and others, are saying we have come soooo far with this that we are even willing to BREAK LAWS to shut down a racist pig. Break laws. Seriously? But yes believe the media: racism is everywhere, everywhere, racial conflict is everywhere, everywhere! Which his why we will break laws to shut it down? Uh huh.

There are a few very unfortunate incidents of racism, on BOTH sides, that get all the headlines. Travon Martin, fortunately, is the exception not the rule. There's no Travon Marin headline every day. More like once a year. The vast majority of people live successful lives without such conflict, but that doesn't sell newspapers now does it.

I want to cry because this is what we have come to. A pretty girl who barely even knows who she is goes under the knife to become a completely different cookie cutter version of her former self. And it's forever, her old face can't be reclaimed. Is her self esteem that low? Are OUR self esteems as women this low?

Sterling has never hidden his views on African-Americans. A little research into the man by the player or his agent would have uncovered this man's vileness. Didn't stop players or coaches from signing with his team did it?

+++

True, but he was sued twice for housing discrimination, not only against blacks, but also against Latinos and Koreans. Both cases were settled out of court. That's an entirely separate issue that didn't involve the team or the NBA. I think that the difference here is that this had to do with the sport itself. When you tell someone not to bring blacks to his games, it involves all the teams and the fans who attend the games. This really made the players and the coach to sit up and take notice. This was personal discrimination against them on a professional level, and involved all of those who play for him and work under him in the NBA. Had it been ignored, the public outcry would have been tremendous. The NBA was complacent in allowing it to continue. Something should have been done a long time ago, but when the housing discrimination suits were brought against him, there was a different commissioner. He did nothing about it and he won't have to answer as to why this wasn't addressed. This time, however, it was much more personal. It wasn't a matter of not wanting to rent to an Asian or member of a minority. He didn't want blacks (specifically blacks) at his games, a slap in the face to all of those who support the team.

"Children First....your analogy doesn't fit this scenario. Mr. Sterling isn't being accused of breaking any laws. It isn't against the law to be a racist, bigoted, adulterous scumbag."

+++

...and it's against the law to have kids' underwear in your own home? The analogy does fit the Sterling situation. In both cases, no laws were broken. What's done is done in the privacy of your own home. As a parent, though, I'd certainly want to know if my child's teacher had a cache of kids'panties at home, even though no law was broken, nobody was molested, and he didn't collect them from the children themselves. Is there any time when invasion of privacy becomes necessary...when what a person does in his own home (even though no laws are broken) should become a matter of public consumption?

It's now being reported that, according to attorneys on both sides, the tape was made by mutual consent. He knew that he was being recorded and admitted that he made the statements. The media who dissected it and exposed it did nothing illegal, so I'm not sure how any of this was illegal if CA is a mutual consent state.

I looks like Hailey has been very busy in NYC, trying to be the "it" girl who "covers the scene".
She's poised to do it, it appears.
She's young, is getting "the look" (stop, now though), and has a far more outgoing personality than Kate.
She's young and available on every level, to move about, flit about, stay out late, party, travel, make commitments, all without leaving children behind or using them to further her career.

I do read into Hailey's message, that she is working her way up as opposed to Kate, who expects immediate credibility and collegial rapport from those who are definitely not her peers.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

You're right his lawyer is now saying he knew. However I'm very suspicious of that. That may just be something they are conceding to help it blow over. I don't think it's going to work out very well for him to start ranting about not knowing, I think many people think that beside the point. (I don't, but that's me) That said, it was not supposed to be leaked. That doesn't remove the privacy issue from the equation. No one is saying how the leak came about or how much TMZ paid.

This is over for him. It is wise to just say fine whatever I agreed to be recorded, even if that's not true. Who would agree to record such a thing, and why, and why doesn't it say on the tape "okay I'm recording it now, Donald you are aware I am recording and agree, right?" Suspicious.

They're not going to win any battles on principle, and they might as well not try. That doesn't mean the public doesn't have a problem with the principle of the thing, and they do. Some of them.

Exactly, and it is. No need to take it too far, the free market has this one just fine.

The thing is, if we never allow ourselves to ever hear anything bad, how will we ever have anything to compare the "good" speech to? You always need that barometer. If your barometer only does readings for good speech, how can you tell? Society needs balance to function. This should be a real wake up call for how far we have come and how we are walking some pretty fine lines here. It's a slippery slope where the next step is things like book burning and such because those book are racist or say uncomfortable things or what have you. It's a slippery slope where now you can't even say how you feel in your HOME. Make no mistake, that's the slope we are on.

I'm glad this happened in the sense that it gave a very disturbing look at where we are at now. And how maybe we need to dial it back. At least when it comes to things said in the home.

How do we know what good thoughts and ideas are if we are never allowed to try out bad ones?

Would be be saying this if it was kid's shoes or socks? Would we be worried if he went home and dressed in diapers? Women's underwear? People have the right to be weird in the privacy of their own homes. Maybe he should get the maid to sign a CA. Certain people have morality clauses in their contracts so I have no idea if it would apply in this case. No evidence of any crime in this scenario, therefore, no parent has the right to know.

I just want to point out that apparently Mr. Sterling was well aware that his conversation was being recorded. It seems that V. Stiviano recorded and videotaped a number of conversations with Mr. Sterling, with his knowledge and willing participation. I don't know the reasons for these recorded conversations, but apparently a third person was present during some (if not all) of the recordings and verifies that this was not some "gotcha" behavior. If you are fully aware that you are being recorded or videotaped, even within your own home, then you might want to think twice before saying something really offensive.

As to whether Sterling might be forced to sell his interest in the Clippers, Sterling belongs to an association of owners. He agreed to abide by certain rules as an owner, including a stipulation that if 3/4 of owners determine it, he has to sell the team. For years, he has reaped many benefits of being part of this association, but it now appears he may have to accept another part of that agreement that won't particularly like. You can't pick and choose which terms of the agreement you will abide by, such as only those that benefit you.

This is no different that Phil Robertson being suspended by A&E (for a silly brief period of time) for making offensive statements while giving an interview. Because Phil Robertson had a contract with A&E whereby he would participate in a show and present a certain image that would appeal to a broad spectrum of the general public (and more importantly, sponsors), he was supposed to stick within certain guidelines while promoting the show. He went outside the terms of the contract, A&E suspended him as was their right, and then it was all over (except for the ratings, which have been going downward ever since).

If you are in business with another person, and your actions are detrimental to that business, potentially causing loss of business and income, that's where your right to free speech runs right up against your "right" to face the consequences of your free speech. That's what's going on with Sterling. His actions are causing financial damage - the other partners to the agreement can see that, and it's well within their rights under the agreement to get rid of this fellow who's causing the loss of revenue and goodwill toward the NBA.

It really just comes down to common sense and a sense of decency. If you are a racist, yet you want to be part of an industry that relies quite heavily on people of all color to make it successful, you ought to keep your feelings entirely to yourself, no matter where you are. That's common sense. Even better, how about working toward becoming a decent person and letting go of those racist beliefs? Sterling did neither (and apparently has not hidden his beliefs for a number of years). His beliefs and actions are coming home to roost, and this defense of "invasion of the sanctity of his home" is disingenuous.

Millicent said...

Gabby said:
But, let's please not force beliefs down people's throats. You will not change them, but the beliefs will just go under ground

I think what we are seeing is that more and more people are fed up with racism and prejudice, and this is actually a corrective reaction taking place. It seems extreme, but given the context of hundreds of years of racism, often institutionalized into our laws even, the pendulum is swinging the other way. Unfortunately, sometimes it has to swing pretty hard because whenever you are fighting against a status quo, people who like the status quo are quite resistant to change. So unfortunately, some of them get hit with a wrecking ball, like Sterling. I give him no quarter just because he's old and grew up in a time where racism was more tolerated. He's an adult working in a field heavily invested in black athletes - so he should know better by now.

When something like this is made public, I think a lot of people say "are you freaking kidding me? Does someone who seems well educated and ought to know better still believe this sh*t?" And it stirs up frustration and anger and a determination not to let it pass, nor sweep it under the rug. Enough is enough already. If you have an issue with people of color, this is fair warning that you might want to keep that ugly thought to yourself, especially if someone is taping your conversation, with your knowledge. Especially if you are in a business agreement where one of the terms is that if 3/4 of the other parties decide you are harmful to the intent of the agreement, they can force you to sell off your interest. Yep, that would have been the prudent thing to do, but when a person is prejudiced against someone based on the color of their skin, I'm thinking wisdom isn't one of their strong points.

Good comments/discussion Mil and Ad.

I could get into some deep conversations on all this as I have given culture/society a lot of thought.

1) I find GREAT irony in the fact that Sterling managed to fall in love with a MexicanBlack women!! Think of the cognitive dissonance going on in his head. And as for her...I pretty much she a golddigger that now is probably regretting killing the Golden Goose. :)

2) I am not going to debate my values....but I have seen a disturbing trend by media to disregard race baiting. I followed the whole Zimmerman trial. And I did not think that POTUS comments helped the situation. Look at how many wars are started by people disagreeing on race, religion or beliefs (think current Shite/Sunni/Zionist divide). The establishment likes nothing better than for the masses to fight and take attention off of them. i.e Wallstreet/Bankers.

3) I think the current generation will change the paradigm....naturally. It will be their New World. The colors are being blended by them.

4) I hate the current news media (dangling carrot)....one problem is that fact that we don't hear the whole story, and media cowards down completely to their advertisers...as do our politicians....we are damned if they do and damn if they don't....a double edged sword...and I don't have the solution. A return to balance, wisdom and truth??? Maybe the next generation...we have left them with plenty of problems to solve.

*sigh* Sterling was aware he was being recorded and/or videotaped, as apparently he was hoping to write a book about his life and thought these recordings would be useful to him. Once you agree to be recorded, you ought to realize that you've forfeited the right to claim expectation of privacy.

I'm not sure who leaked the tape to TMZ, but the woman says it wasn't her, and TMZ says it wasn't her either. In fact, she seems upset that the tape got leaked. I don't think she has some agenda here.

I disgree with Kareem's take. Again, use of plain old common sense would have been helpful here. If you own a NBA team, you would be wise to keep any racist thoughts to yourself, most especially when you are being recorded with your full knowledge and consent. Trying to drum up sympathy for this jerk because he said it behind closed doors just isn't flying with me.

However, this is apparently the straw that broke the camel's back. Sterling has not been well received by many of the other NBA owners over the years, for a variety of reasons. He has been sued more than once for discriminating as a landlord. What is happening is called come-uppance, or karma.

I just keep coming back to one thing - if this man had equal parts common sense and common decency, this would not be an issue. It's a case of you reap what you sow. It's not a slippery slope of invasion of privacy. It's a racist saying racist things while knowingly being taped. If anyone is concerned that their own beliefs might be offensive to the general public, then I would just say: Say what you will in the privacy of your own home, but don't be surprised if the people you say it to share your comments with others. Don't be surprised if you say offensive things while being tape-recorded with your knowledge, and then that tape somehow makes it way out of your house and into the hands of people who might think less of you once they hear it. If you don't want people to find you offensive and racist, easiest way to avoid that is don't be offensive and racist.

Wait to say those things when you are alone. Don't assume that the people you are talking to share your views, and will keep your comments to themselves. They are absolutely free to say, "hey, do you know what this guy said? You won't believe it! I was at his house for dinner and he said this really racist thing."

I would suggest that Sterling be involved in a business where he is the sole investor, and the sole individual relying on the success of that business. At that time, he can then say or do whatever he wants and the financial fall out will only affect him.

It seems a leap, to me, to go from agreeing to be recorded, to having said recording sold for profit, on top of the content being incendiary.

I guess because Diana said nothing racist, that was wrong, but this was okay? It doesn't work that way. Your private ramblings are your private ramblings. What he puts in the finished product is fair game, but this stuff? Whoever leaked it was wrong. That is not the same as giving an interview saying this is what he said to me you won't believe it! That may be shady, but it's permissible. Instead, they took his own private words and private tapings without his permission, book ramblings or not, and sold them. That said I have a hard time believing someone is taping a conversation about juice for a book. I think it's a lie because no one on his side wants to fight this, which I guess is wise.

The owner of the LA Clippers, now banned for life from any association with the NBA, must have lived in an alternate universe for the last half of his Eighty years. Did he miss Martin Luther King? Was he deaf to the message of the content of one’s character? Did he not understand that ridding the heart of prejudice is not for the benefit of those you oppress but for the betterment of your own soul?
All of us deal with the negative aspects of our up-bringing in different ways, some better than others, but it’s hard to understand how one can miss the enormous cultural lessons we’ve all, I hope and pray, had to learn during the past fifty years. No one is immune from bias. The perfect person has not walked this earth for 2,000 years. In the quiet of the night when we peer into our own heart and acknowledge the dark corners that exist within we have to continually promise ourselves to do better, to let go of harmful beliefs and entrapments, to continue the necessary house-keeping chores that help us prevent indefensible thoughts, words and actions. Rose Kennedy told us “It’s not the problems in Life, but how you deal with them.” Darker thoughts and emotions all too easily flicker through our mind. Ban them. You’ll be the better for it.
The Cowboy Creed comes to mind this morning:
“If it’s not yours, don’t take it.”
“If it’s not true, don’t say it.”
“If something’s wrong, don’t do it.”
Put those three together with The Golden Rule and life turns out to be pretty simple.

I wonder what her parents think about this?

Very sad, I believe.

++++++++

Did her father have a hand in it?

I'm assuming you're talking about HG's plastic surgery. It would be highly unethical for her dad to perform surgery on her. He may have been in on a consult, or had a quid pro quo deal with another surgeon, but he shouldn't have had a direct involvement.

So he was taping a variety of thoughts for a future book. This is normal practice. It does not mean it's fair game for the public.

When princess Diana had her variety of thoughts for her book made public, there was outrage. Her sons felt so devastated they called one of their first ever press conferences to express their betrayal and dismay. I felt for them.

Admin, You know I've been around your blog for a long, long time and how I feel about KG but isn't this exactly what Robert did to Kate?

Gotyoutnumber, Kate threw her CDs out. Trash on the side of the road is not private, per the Supreme Court. If Diana, or Sterling, put their tapes in the garbage, they'd be fair game. They did not. Kate did.

The Supreme Court is very clear. The privacy of your home is sacred. But the minute you leave your home or discard your private items you could very well lose that right. Moreover, Kate's diaries describe the criminal act of child abuse. You lose that expectation of privacy when you commit a criminal act. For instance you can't say well I'm allowed to kill someone as long as it's in my private home. No, of course not. You can however be a racist pig in your home. That's no crime.

Thanks for posting that, Lukebandit. I love Paul. He's the voice of reason, of common sense.
And he's the person that Kate (and the sheeple) dissed. It figures.

I was going to suggest he have a mental evaluation for competence!

He's 80 some years old. I think it's a bit too late for that, and for changing his ways/views/attitude. Something about teaching old dogs new tricks.

I don't think that it is. The teacher in the analogy has not committed any crime; 113

Given his collection of girl's (not women's) underwear, I am presuming the video also involves children. That is indeed a crime.

Thanks for the legal explanation, Admin. I just wish Kate was publically/financially brought down like Sterling, Paula Deen, and the DD father were but of course she always manages to avoid this kind of thing. I guess she's not famous enough for anyone to care.

Radaronline has another silly article re: TFW. All the comments are scathing and some tell her to get a real JOB. They used an old out of date picture. Their interest in TFW reminds me of a piece of film stuck so it plays over and over again. Just not fresh or interesting.

I hate the current news media (dangling carrot)....one problem is that fact that we don't hear the whole story, and media cowards down completely to their advertisers...as do our p
oliticians....we are damned if they do and damn if they don't....a double edged sword...and I don't have the solution.
------------------

Once upon.a time, the news was considered a public service, not a money making proposition. When it became "for profit" it started to go downhill.
I miss Uncle Walter (Cronkite).

radaronline is running a non-story. The only thing new is Kate was on CA and was fired. I guess someone in her camp doesn't know that they were not supposed to mention CA by name and give a spoiler!

++++++++++

That's an assumption. Nowhere was it stated that the video involved children; in fact, I specifically said that in this analogy no crime was committed and no children were involved. In that situation, a video was made showing his extensive collection.

His bizarre fascination took place in the privacy of his own home. Nothing illegal about that. However, as a parent and although I wouldn't have the "right" to know about it, I certainly would want to know it.

hey, is the person who wrote the latest article at ROL, on something? The article was total contradictory. They first say Kate will get gigs on TV then say she probably will, but has none at the moment. LOLOLOLOL I guess they don't communicate, over there at ROL. Kate announced a month ago she was doing an update show, which we all know will have a media tour attached with it.

Another story from Kates camp. ROL said a close pal of Kates. Hey, sheeple whose selling stories to ROL, not Jon.

Oh brother. Kate's "source" is at it again on Radar. Nothing new really; slamming Jon and saying Kate will back in TV. Yeah, we already know about TLC, Radar.

Meanwhile, all's quiet in Kate's twitter. Must be enjoying herself, wherever she is, with Steve.

...I have read some of the comments re: Racism. And what bothers me most is the "thought police". We live in a free market with free speech, so let the market take care of him. But, let's please not force beliefs down people's throats. You will not change them, but the beliefs will just go under ground. Values and norms are changing, I don't think it's necessary to tar and feather people. People knew how he thought, yet they took his money for years. Now that it's public, let the market do it's job. And YES, I am tired of the almost constant story being on the news channels....there is a lot of news not being covered because of this.

People I fear most are not the racists....but the "thought police"!

And yet those who hate Kate not only voice their thoughts in private but on every PUBLIC medium they can find that is talking abut Kate. Hypocrite much?

me you • 11 minutes ago

I wish Kate Gosselin could be on a different TV show each week. I applaud her for supporting her children.
Someone tweeted recently that Mr Not a Dad was in Atlantic City having a good ole time. There's a gross picture of him in a cheap hotel on his FB. Sad that once he "found" his twenties, he stayed there .
I'm so glad Kate is smart enough to know not to ever count on him for anything.
His kids must be terribly disappointed in him.

Ha! I posted about that, too.
I'd be surprised if Jon has a public social media account, but maybe he does.

Dunno, I wouldn't be surprised that he's partying in AC.
Obviously, he and Liz are into that and really, can do whatever when they don't have custody.

Rob Ford has not resigned as the Mayor of Toronto, he has taken a leave of absence to deal with his addiction to alcohol. Oddly, he did not mention, nor does he acknowledge, having a problem with using drugs, (specifically crack-cocaine). He refuses to give up his Mayoral seat, and plans to run again in the fall.

Obviously, his colleagues are relieved he has finally sought help, but would prefer he just go away after the embarrassment he has brought upon the city of Toronto. His most recent drunken rants have included homophobic slurs as well as demeaning various female Council members. I cannot see him coming back as Mayor, but I do wish him the best outcome with the treatment he has finally admits he needs.

I've kept my mouth shut on the subject of Don Sterling. Mark Cuban's message is the same as mine.

http://dallasmorningviewsblog.dallasnews.com/2014/05/mark-cubans-nuance-on-don-sterling-is-worth-understanding.html/

People can be stupid. People can have stupid opinions. People should be allowed to say whatever they want whether it's stupid or not. I'm tired of gold diggers always finding a way to make money off inappropriate behavior. Hell, if I did this to people I'd be a billionaire!

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Lol and the sheeple were crowing so loudly that Jon shirks his responsibilities and screws around in atlantic city. Haha. One look at that photo and you know it's obviously not him, although hysterical! Are they that dumb?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I love, love, love Mark Cuban. He's thinking about this situation on a global, dimensional level.

He's right. Today saying racist things is not in vogue. But what if tomorrow saying something like all people should be equal suddenly is not in vogue? Same thing? Tar and feather? We have to remember there was a time when not agreeing with sterling's awful views could put you in jeopardy. What if how we treat him was how we treated those who championed equal rights. Oh wait that IS how we treated them. Makes ya think.

Punishing speech instead of actions IS a slippery slope and the term has been used by numerous high profile commentators on this now. Thank you Mark.

_____________

They're suggestible. They see what they want to see, like when one person says Kate's had recent work done on her teeth when all you can see are 3 1/2 teeth in a photo. Then everyone agrees, YES! She's had recent work done on her teeth.
