The show that unseated 'Jon and Kate Plus 8'

A&E's season premiere of Duck Dynasty last week garnered 11.8 million viewers. The big ratings beat out the previous record holder for reality T.V., Jon and Kate Plus 8, whose episode announcing the couple's split that aired in June 2009 hit 10.8 viewers. That goose is cooked. The successful show about a family who makes duck callers and other equipment for duck hunters has also earned its stars a raise, at more than $200,000 an episode for the family according to most reports.

A&E tonight will repeat the Duck episode that now reigns supreme, as well as a new episode. Check local listings. The episode can also be seen online for free on A&E's web site.

Wouldn't it be cheaper (and easier) to buy Tuna Helper for 1.29 a box at Walmart, two large cans of tuna on sale for $1.39 a can, and some frozen peas? Whole meal would cost about $6.50 and wouldn't be swimming in grease.

That makes me #1, but #2 was admin, not a troll talking to herself. Yes I rarely post and often late at night after I've had time to read all the posts. And I always post as Zoe.

======================

Gosh, Zoe, I'm sorry you thought I was referring to your post. I was referring to ones from two people with two random names a minute apart. I can't find them now because I really don't remember the date.

They were two names made up for the post (which is what this person tends to do). One name was something like "My Costco doesn't Have Magazines." I just remember waking up, seeing those random names, and thinking, "Here we go again." None of the regular posters do this--this person likes to come up with a taunting name to fit the post.

I'm really sorry it sounded as if I meant you. I surely didn't. Cross my heart!

Zoe, again, my fault for posting without referencing the comment. I DO remember the name wasn't Zoe. I'm sorry for posting carelessly and causing you to feel bad.

Anna Gunn, who plays Skyler, Walt's wife on Breaking Bad, wrote an oo-Ed piece for the New York Times called "I Have a character Problem" apparently, her character is loathed and despised by many of the fans, but has now been extended to loathing and despising the actress, herself.

She has received death threats, and there are multiple sites devoted to bashing her. She has played that character brilliantly, and the personal attacks are insane--she is playing a part.

TFW, however, is not playing a part. maybe this is something to consider when you put your life on display.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I can’t say that I have enjoyed being the center of the storm of Skyler hate. But in the end, I’m glad that this discussion has happened, that it has taken place in public and that it has illuminated some of the dark and murky corners that we often ignore or pretend aren’t still there in our everyday lives.

&&&

Wonderful piece by Anna. She accurately pins down why people hate her character, yet is not crying about it. As I was reading it, this quote came to mind:

I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Oh by the way please, please watch Anna's new movie Little Red Wagon. It's beautiful. It's on netflix streaming.

Breaking Bad is the great American novel, continues with this episode to be the great American novel, and that's why people have been so enthralled with it to the point where some people are taking it so personally.

I hate to admit it but this blog is doing NOTHING for my diet. I was already craving for some sour cream banana bread ("Hello?!") AND poppy seed bread when Joy just had to mention Bisquick... a blast for my past! I will now have to dig up a recipe for one of their weird upsidedown meat pies. Remember those?

And if that wasn't bad enough, the discussion went on about sweetbreads! I do not want to sound too French or anything, but this is one of my favorite dish ever. A real, real, delicacy. Not so long ago, it was more or less a staple on the bistrots menus, here, in Québec. Sadly, since the mad cow disease scare, you can't find it anywhere (even at butchers...) without your stars getting aligned. That, and calf's brain. And oxtail. And kidneys are getting rarer and rarer. Sometimes, I have to go to three or four places before finding some for my steak and kidney pies.

We are not always aware of it, but the way we eat is really changing so fast. Not so long ago, I remember looking at ginger roots at the grocery store and thinking what the heck is that used for? Some of those changes are for the better. Some... not so much. I do miss oxtail.

I don't think I've ever had sweetbreads. I'd like to try them.

Yes I've noticed that too. Staples I have in my kitchen now are not what we had just 10 years ago. Staples used to crisco and butter, wonder bread and toaster strudels, iceberg lettuce. Now I always have to make sure I have a big pint of cherry tomatoes, a couple zucchini heads, a boxed salad mixed greens, and some wheat naan bread. It really is fascinating to watch people's eating habits change, and not to eating rabbit food, but to eating really savory dishes dishes just as good and sometimes better than what we used to. Schools are changing too. Really cool thing.

To tie it in with TFW's cookbook, many of her recipes seem to be looking backward to old eating habits, not forward to new ones. I'm not sure her temperature on how many of the readers are changing (not all, I get that) is accurate. Fifteen years ago, tuna casserole was on every menu at least once a week. While some people may never take it off, now it's really not something that common for many people. There's a reason Campbells is having a heck of a time selling their canned soups including their cream of fill and the blanks that people used to have a pantry full of for casseroles. Because many people have stopped eating that way.

Someone else pointed out the veggie choices and many of the recipes are not geared towards kids. I think that's a fair point. While we can always find a few kids who will eat an unpopular veggie, the point being that MOST kids probably don't like some of the veggies she's chosen.

But then, I'm a little confused if this is even supposed to be a kid friendly cookbook. The theme is a little lost on me.

There have been studies on food consumption trends

A good one I found with a quick google search is from the Produce for Better Health foundation.

From 2010, they report that households only get 10 PERCENT of their veggies from a can. If that's not a stat that would scare someone recommending canned goods in their recipes I don't know what will. Almost 50% of the average person's veggies come straight from the produce section fresh and 25% from home gardens/plants.

As far as favorite veggies there are tons of research about that too, with this same organization polling moms and rating veggies like corn, green beans, carrots, potatoes and broccoli as their kids' top favorite veggies. Only 2 PERCENT of households reported asparagus was a favorite veggie and less than 1 PERCENT reported their favorite veggie comes from a can.

These are stats someone writing a kid friendly book should keep in mind.

Yes GI Jane is where I first heard it Dmasy! Good catch!

It's a DH Lawrence quote.

I like it because it's a life philosophy to live by. Either quit your crying or get out of the game. But the world doesn't care if you want to feel sorry for yourself.

I personally hate Walter far more than I ever hated Skylar. He is a sociopath with no conscience. Skylar in the beginning made reasonable demands for answers on Walt because he was being shady and up to no good. As his wife, she has every right to know why he's beat up, why he's getting strange phone calls, and why he's missing for days. Later, she got sucked in herself but seems to be very beaten down now and wanting out, even had a suicide attempt to try to get out, but is not sure how you swim out of jello.

I like that Anna Gunn decided instead of complaining about poor me all the hate, she decided simply to psychoanalyze it and try to figure out why. Good for her. As a society when people react a certain way, there's usually a reason, if only a simple one. We should try to understand each other.

After, reading some of Kate's recipes, she should not go around telling people in interviews that she cooks organic. Most of her recipes are salty & have beans in it or some kind of canned something. I think the only one who eats organic in that house is Kate. Kate just slops together what ever is available to feed the kids. Potluck gone astray. Kate does tell people about food allergies, no warning about salt or sugar, and that you should drain & rinse canned foods, or use low sodium canned soups, whenever possible, and watch for sodium content in the ingredients you use. I saw the pick of whatever that was, that had a lot of grease on top of that dish, I would not like to eat that.
I love my George Forman grill, cooked pork chops and cutlets (first time)yesterday, they were cooked throughly and were still juicy. And I love the fact that the grease/drippings collects in the tray.
For a person who claims that she is a nurse, she certainly flunked basic nutrition.

I just watched Oprah Winfrey's show "Where Are They Now". They did interviews with the Brady Bunch kids. What really struck me was the interview with Christopher Knight. He said that during the show he felt "prostituted" by his mother. Apparently, Christopher had to support the family because no one else had a job. Mike Lookinland had a bad drinking problem and now makes cement counter tops. He said that nothing in the entertainment business is real, everything is just so fake and he prefers to live his life as a real person. Very interesting. I couldn't help but think of the Gosselin children and I think they, also, are being "prostituted" by their mother.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Getoftwitter that's exactly right.

I think people have to do what they have to do to feed their families and sometimes that's not going to be organic, it's not a crime against humanity. Sometimes, it may be a lack of food education or just cost prohibitive. You do what you can.

However, if you have been preaching the virtues of organic and healthy eating, and you can easily afford to eat organic and healthy, how can you in good conscience give your babies all that salt and canned goods? If you TRULY believe in that lifestyle and have the means to afford it, I really am not seeing the connection between resorting to the cans and salt with all the health risks out there well documented by the organic crowd. Does she believe the research or not? I don't understand this disconnect.

Admin> I have to be aware of salt & sugar content, which means reading every label. I don't buy the organic, cause, it's twice to three times the price of regular. Also, a lot of the organic canned & the healthy TV dinners/frozen stuff, have either a lot of salt and less sugar or they have lots of sugar and less salt. The fat content is low, but either one> the salt or sugar will be high. I find that a lot of the healthy chips are loaded with salt, and some of the regular chips are low salt. So, everyone really has to read the labels. I believe Kate does not read the labels. Several of her recipes, have 3 or more canned food in it, if you add up the sodium, it's way more than you are to have in a day( one teaspoon a day of salt)plus Kate also adds extra salt, for taste?. She should just give the kids a half a cup of salt to eat, with the food on top. Nasty!

In fact in what we can see of her chapter on organic, she fails to provide even a simple explanation of what organic is and why it's better. Not even so much as, no pesticides.

I also think that "lightening strike" idiot has nothing to do with TFW other than an ill-advised hijacking of her story for her own gain, and we should stop saying she does before it's a rumor that gets away from us.

Actually, Wind, sweetbreads ("ris de veau", in french...) are the thymus gland that runs down the spine of the calf, if I remember it right. The brain is called "cervelle" on menus and it IS the brain. Sweetbreads when well cooked are firm but light and crispy. Cervelle, well... can be a little gelatinous. It's an acquired taste, let's say.

Few years back we went to savannah and had dinner at The Lady and Sons, Paula Deen restaurant. The fried green tomatoes were great!. ( but we think the Sea Shack on Hilton Head Island and Sam &Uli's on the mainland right before you cross the bridge to HHI are both the best restaurants in the area).
There is of course a large gift shop attached to the restaurant. They had a great kids cook book by Paula with recipes to make with your kids, or that older children could make by themselves with supervision. It had a spiral binding so it would stay open, and the pages were plastic coated so you could wipe spills off it easily. I bought that for my neighbors elementary school age child. It was very basic, explained terms, talked about encouraging independence in children letting them pick what to make, having fun together in the kitchen, etc. It really impressed me as a terrific beginning cookbook for children.
That approach might have been better for TFMJG to take, have each recipe feature a child helping, something like that. What has been shared here does not sound very child friendly.

TFW had an opportunity to do something unique in cookbooks. She could have had an organic alternative, especially, since she uses prepared and processed foods. For example, she could have listed Annie's boxed Mac & Chees, which is widely available. She also could have provided low-salt ingredient substitutions, such as using dried beans instead of canned.

I don't know why I bother with this...it is just such a wasted opportunity.

My take on the Skyler character is that she is the barometer for that family. Remember when we were commenting on "gas lighting"? BB has masterfully demonstrated, through Skyler, the toxic effects of living with someone who manipulates your own reality. We have seen her evolution from darkness and denial, to trying to control by participating and masterminding money laundering. In the final season, as the horror of the death and carnage that has happened, and her world disintegrates, she is overwhelmed and over-reactive. Living with constant fear and lies changes you, and not for the better.

I have said here that my husband is an alcoholic, and my own kids recommended that I watch this show because they saw parallels in their father's behavior, as well as my own. I have been all of the places that Skyler has been, at one time or another. This dynamic is played out in families everywhere in which there is abuse, criminal activity and addiction. Recovery rooms are full of people who are living with the effects of someone else's compulsive behavior and family secrets.

It reminds me of how people were blaming Sandusky's wife, and asserting she had to know what was happening.

Seems Kate's cooking is filled with canned items and lots of cheese. Even replacing with dried beans once in a while, easy to soak overnight or the quick method. Her cooking is more a reminder of 60's cooking or trying to stretch the meat with lots of fillers. Can't remember the last time I used a canned vegetable. Spent more than $40 yesterday at local farms stands for corn, squash, assorted tomatoes, Italian kale, eggplant, yellow and green beans and first time ever okra. I'm looking for a bargain on a bunch of green peppers so I can make another batch of stuffed peppers. Made only 6 last week and they were gone with one meal (3 people). This is what gets me. Here is Kate sitting on 20+ acres doing nothing. Yes, she some chickens, but that is SOLELY due to the TLC episode and we have never seen a photo of those "50" chickens. What she could have done , a la Martha Stewart, is hired a crew to plant and maintain a huge organic garden of "yummy veggies". Instead, she takes the lazy way out by opening cans and creating slop. My theory is that she resents having that property and being stuck on it with the kids but really wants to live a glam life in LA. I cannot imagine living on that gorgeous property and not having a garden and tons of pets if I had a big family. It would be ideal, for me, and you would think for her. What a fairy take life, and on top of it, she doesn't have to work a 9 - 5 job.

I really cannot abide her whining and grifting. I guess she figures it worked with raging success, so she keeps trying. It concerns me the lessons she is teaching those kids, particularly now Mady, who is #1. Nothing like showing blatant favoritism to instill kids to please mommy dearest even more.

This is going to backfire on her BIG TIME, but her narcissism won't allow her to see that.

Zoe,
I'm sorry about my reaction to what you said about my son's work (Costco) experiences. It seems like whatever we say here, someone is picking it apart--either here, on Twitter, or on another blog. Plus, we've had some trolls here lately, trying to snark on everything we say. I guess I was being too sensitive. I'm over it.
With regards to whether the store is reimbursed for the mags, my son helps remove things from the shelves, and prepares them to be discarded. He said they rip of the covers, but he doesn't have anything to do with sending in the covers for reimbursement. So, maybe they do? Either way, there was a very large number of unsold People mags last week.

Looking through the preview of LIITM, there is a recipe for marinaded chicken. TFW said she was throwing it together when she was about to leave to get the kids from the bus. They were having guests for dinner. But she writes that the chicken has to marinade for 4-6 hours. Huh??? What time were they going to eat dinner?

Did I read that right--TFW is suing Jon for $5,000? Why bother suing for so little? Looks like she is suing out of spite. I also see John/Jane Doe 1-20. Are those her supposed twitter bullies? She better make sure that all her information is absolutely accurate, or this could really end up biting her in the bum. And it will all be made public. If she thinks things are ugly now....

So should we prep for TFMJG confessional tour? The cookbook didn't get enough media interest, what to do? Everyone wants to interview someone who is going to court!

... That, and calf's brain. And oxtail.

Organza - Your mentioning calf's brain and oxtail brought back a couple of memories.

When I was about 9, my Dad took my grandmother, sister and me to Quebec on a business trip (my Mom wisely chose to stay home with my baby brother). Well, Dad decided to be daring, so he ordered calf's brain for dinner one night. He liked it. Unfortunately, it didn't like him. When he was driving back to our hotel later that night, he began experiencing some - well, to put it politely - severe gastrointestinal distress. He was so desperate to find a bathroom that he double-parked, jumped out of the car, and ran into the closest building! The rest is kind of a blur. I guess my grandmother must have moved the car and brought us into the building, because all I remember after that is seeing him riding an escalator down toward us. Without cell phones back then, I have no idea how my grandmother ever found him!

My oxtail memory is far more pleasant. My mom bought oxtail once at the Italian Market in South Philly and made oxtail soup. I still remember how delicious it was! But she only made it that one time, and I have never had it since.

Thanks for the memory triggers!

Joy, I'm sure if you ask nicely, Sleepless will bring along some Oreos, and maybe even some Peeps she has preserved in her freezer, on the next virtual tour you host!

I just read through the lawsuit document. One part really stood out to me. The lawsuit claims that Robert stole the hard drive. Robert has always said that he had computer discs, and never mentioned the hard drive. Under Factual Allegations, #30, the lawsuit says:

"Hoffman falsely claimed in certain publications that he recovered the data from Kate’s computer by digging through her trash that he found on the street. This demonstrates his knowledge that the materials were obtained illegally, as it is a sign of an attempt to cover up his unlawful activities. The materials in his possesion could not possibly be physically found in paper format to that extent. If Hoffman was picking through trash on the street, he did not find this trove of personal information while engaging in his trash-picking activities."

First, the lawsuit purports that picking through trash is "illegal" which it is not. Then it asserts that Robert could not have found "paper" copies of Kate's info.

Yet it does not address anywhere that Robert could have found computer DISCS in the trash.

Talk about spin!!

Well, to quote Tillie from Guess Who's Coming to Dinner:

"all hell done broke loose now!"

What on earth does TFW think she can possibly gain from this suit? Is she that stupid that she doesn't realize that EVERYTHING negative about her will come out in an OFFICIAL capacity now???

I think her raging hatred of Jon and her desperation to remain in the news and not ever have to work again will finally be her downfall.

Those poor children.

Wow, headlining ROL right now is the lawsuit Kate filed today. That didn't take long. Read the first page of comments and only 1 was in support of her.

I think she just put the nail in her coffin.

What a tool.

I feel even more for those kids. She should have just left well enough alone and retreated to a private life.

I hope for his sake, Robert Hoffman meant what he said about being able to back up every one of his claims.

Kate's such a tool. Oh wait, I said that already. Well, I suppose it bares (sp?) repeating.

During court, if Hoffman and Jon show all the documents as evidence, doesn't that show a lot about Kate's character? Her own words of abuse. If they have records of her financial status, and she's been crying poor, maybe hid some money from Jon during the divorce. I don't see this earning her any new fans. I laughed out loud at this one, her records have independent value because of her "celebrity status". She really thinks she's still a celebrity. Jon owns basically nothing, rents a home, what does she have to gain, other than hurting her children by hurting their father. Once again, these kids will never have any privacy while under her watch. Wonder how much of this they hear on the bus or in school, because their peers must hear their parents talk about her at least a little maybe one little comment from a mom to a dad making dinner, OMG now she's suing Jon. She's not on most's folks radar.

And if he stole her hard drive causing $5000 damages why didn't she call the police at the time? She must have noticed a hard drive missing. The computer wouldn't work.

Kate had a $5,000 computer, and she's piecing and patching?

The part about how Hoffman could not have found the information by picking through her trash--why not? He has always said he found the discs in the trash. So, yes, he could have found all that information, stored on small discs, in her trash. It sounds like the basis for this lawsuit is a lot of speculation on TFW's part. She is suing bases upon guesswork and speculation? And she expects to win this?
So, if Hoffman shows up in court, says that he found discs in her trash...then what? There was no theft. She threw it away. Once it hits the street in her trash bins, it's fair game. No crime. I remember when Aldrich Ames (American spy) was caught, some of the information that implicated him was obtained by either FBI or CIA (I can't remember which) trash covers. They went through his trash to find incriminating information. And they found it. Hoffman did the same.
I get the feeling that TFW has just opened a Pandora's box of ugliness that she will not be able to slam shut. Looks like her facts are just guesses, and she has nothing to back any of it up. This is going to be interesting. I hope she's ready to answer some uncomfortable questions.

I don't understand why TFW and BV is now publicizing this lawsuit.

She has had relatively good publicity via her People article and her coupon site. Why is she now throwing that all that away-showing her true vindictive self?

I don't know what she hopes to accomplish. I think it puts her in a not very positive light. Although her fans may applaud her for going after Jon, and also Robert, how does that fit in with her spin that she is a different person and that it's all about positivity?

If this lawsuit goes to court, I don't think it will turn out well for either parties. Has Kate even thought about what may come out about her? It just shows how BV has got to her, hook, line and sinker and making her think that she is above reproach.

I feel so sorry for those children, knowing that their mother will throw their father under the bus to make herself appear a victim.

What if Hoffman actually produces the disks that he says he found in the trash? What then? Change tactics midstream and allege that Jon made the discs and put them in the trash? That would be a hard thing to prove.
The comments are pretty universally scathing - again. If she was hoping for sympathy, it has backfired - again!

Wiretapping? The texts from Jon and texts from hailey were found to be fake weren't they? I don't mean the conversation
Hailey had with Kate about setting up Jon, but the texts someone said they had that were from Jon's phone.
