'Real Housewife' Teresa Giudice charged with tax fraud

Teresa and Joe Giudice's troubles with the IRS are truly unbelievable. The 39 count indictment is a train wreck to read. Although much of their blatant dirty deeds happened before Teresa ever signed on with Bravo, there are some interesting tidbits about Teresa's role on the popular Real Housewives of New Jersey. Notably, the compensation is much lower compared to reality T.V. top figures that used to be reported just a few years ago.

  • Between June 2008 and October 2009, Teresa made approximately $110,000 between her reality show, appearances and her web site.
  • In 2009 Teresa and Joe signed on for Season 2 of Real Housewives at $110,000 for the season. This amounts to about $6,000 an episode.
  • The IRS is ticked that Teresa didn't disclose expected future income when she filed for bankruptcy in 2009. They allege she only disclosed her Bravo salary and did not disclose any other income from other sources such as her business and web site. She specifically told them, under oath, that her web site was not generating any income, when the IRS alleges in fact it was.
  • The IRS is also ticked that Teresa didn't disclose the true income from her many other business ventures.
  • The IRS is really, really ticked at this couple.
Teresa Giudice, middle
Teresa and Joe could face up to 30 years in prison. Their passports have been confiscated and Joe faces possible deportation to Italy if convicted.

I don't think it works asking your kids for their passwords. They just make up a new account. Easy peasy.

The best way to keep one eye on your teen's online habits is to 1) NOT give them cell phones and 2) don't put computers in their rooms.

Sure, they can get around these things too but at least my conscience is clean.

Kate can't even say that because her girls HAVE cell phones.

Back to the beach house with great party going on! Its ten on the east coast, so we are just getting started. I see Kiefer Sutherland and Daniel Craig are on patrol as Bauer and Bond to make sure no Gladys Kravitz party crashers come around. Bauer and Bond, great name for a detective agency.
Hi Jeremy, we are all at a virtual party at Lovely beach house at Cape May, NJ, in honor of the Real Housewives.
Look who is here! Andy Cohen, Bravo producer and host of Watch What Happens Live! We can ask him if Teresa is arrogant or stupid or both, and does he think she will do a plea deal and throw Giovanni ” Joe” under the bus. And Andy must tell us how TFW really was as a guest. Oh, that's right Andy, you named her Jackhole of the Week twice, that's all you have to say.
Here is Shoka to spend the weekend with us and run on the beach. I brought dog treats just for him!
Everyone have fun on the big veranda. I convinced Paul Shaffer to come back and play piano again for us. Who is singing along right now? I think its Hugh again. Is BRUCE and Bon Jovi still here?

Joy - your beach party house and daily activities sound both fun and exhausting! Must be my age that's showing. However, the bike ride really sounds appealing to me, as long as it's not too hot and the roadways/pathways are nice and flat!

Then to return to a comfy beach cottage, where cool drinks await? Oh, bring it on!

This mama could not afford to go away on vacation this year, but I am taking next week off. I hope to get out to my nearby beach at least one afternoon,. I bring along a beach chair, and just sit and listen to the waves, people watch and relax.

As for how and what TFW feed's the kids is sad. I have been saying for years...she does not feed them right. I was jumped on b/c I didn't understand how a 5 year old would order a salad instead of french fries. But it was pushed in my face that all children 4-17 order salads for their side dishes.
TFW can't afford MILK for the kid's cause it's just gosh darn too expensive (even 1 glass a day per kid).

It's been made clear that the kid's are ruled by food. You do good and you get ice cream. You tell the world you miss the tv show...you get candy. You eat TFW's crap she call's dinner and rate it 9 stars you are not forced to eat any more.

I feel so bad for these kid's...and still wonder why no one can help them.

Absolutely!
Don't forget, whoever dared got TFW wet on a fricking RAFTING trip would not get dinner that night.
That is sick and abusive.
DH and I had a lovely dinner out with all of his family last night (in laws, BIL"s, SIL's, nieces, nephews), and the kids sat at their own table, and had their own buffet while the "grown ups" ordered from the regular menu.
Not one parent doled out their food, or cared what they helped themselves to, or cared how many smores they made themselves.
The kids had a blast, and they're all happy, healthy and active.
Food just isn't wielded as a weapon or reward.
BTW... just watching the interactions between the kids and their parents-- it just touches my heart. So much love that is expresses in words, glances and touches.
It is vastly, vastly different than how Kate treats her kids. She's so cold, with the occasional touching or looking into the eyes, but nothing "just because' and extemporaneous like my nieces and nephews get.
When's the last time anyone saw a kid crawl into her lap?
And watching my nieces and nephews with their grandparents, OMG, it's precious. They have such a bond and love them so, so , so much. It's all they've known all their lives.

Food should not be a weapon OR a reward or even a focus. My family didn't place the focus on the food, they focused on the gathering together. No one has food issues. The food was good, compliments to the cook, and move on. I do the same now that I'm an adult.

Serves her right for using Mady as bait. It's not just that we can't give her the benefit of the doubt. It's that her actions strongly suggest she is indeed using them. As someone else pointed out, it'd be a heck of a lot easier to look at her post about Mady as merely innocent if she simply linked DIRECTLY to it. Instead you have to get through two, maybe even three I think advertisements for the book to get to Mady's post. She might look a little more innocent if she simply put the book ad in the right hand sidebar so it showed up on every page. Then, link directly to posts she is referencing. She insults her viewers' intelligence.

I saw where someone had asked TFW what she drives, and she said the BBB, or her Toyota SUV when she had 6 kids or less. This was summer 2011. She had the Audi then, but didn't mention it. She was hiding it, all right, and she knew it didn't look good to be crying poor while simultaneously buying a sports car. She was just ticked off that she got caught!

If they had filed returns and paid off the loans, they may not have ever been investigated. The way the IRS works, is that they start with an audit, and if there are no big red flags, that is the end of it. If there were errors made, or a reasonable interpretation of tax laws, then the owed taxes must be paid, and there may be a penalty on top of that. The taxpayer can make a case, for example, medical reasons, hurricane, etc., but they have to prove it.

If there are red flags, and obvious efforts to defraud, the IRS will just keep going back, and begin building a case.

As far as the banks, if the payments are being made, there would be no reason to probe. They only care about getting their money.
----------------------------------
Thanks so much. That's what I'd thought.
I was watching "Show Business Tonight" yesterday and they had as guests the female attorney Monica Chacon and another guest (who I think was the guy who sued Joe G....may have been the case where Joe G. forged the guys name on a loan application). At any rate...the host was insinuating that Monica and the other guest were responsible for getting the G's into trouble with the Feds and that they'd done super sleuthing to accomplish this.

I find this rather alarming....why would super sleuthing have been needed to uncover this? It really makes me wonder how many people are committing fraud and getting away with it. I always thought that the least little illegality and the police would be at your door.

Wouldn't the G.'s have needed to show tax returns when filing for that bankruptcy? And documentation regarding the loans (that made up part of the 11 million in debt)? I'm just having difficulty understanding how all this fraud wasn't uncovered earlier and why any sort of super-sleuthing would have even been necessary.

JMO, but I think Kate knew her show was over but since "No never means no" to her she felt she had so many loving fans that they could make silly signs and stand in parking lots demanding to keep Kate on TV and that would work. After the announcement had been made one of her fans put a petition on her blog to bring Kate back. I don't think it got over 500 signatures.

When her fans say they "have her back" what does that even mean? They couldn't get her job back for her or get her another one.

You're the real mom and you should be proud of yourself! Don't sell yourself short or let an image of someone created to be something she is not make you feel inadequate. From the image of the Christian mom wearing Bible verse t-shirts with verses posted all over the house, to appearing overworked and frazzled while slaving over laundry and meals, she wasn't then and is not now, what the tv show or TFW herself wants us believe.

TFW's "brand" (and that's all it is - something to 'sell' to consumers) has always been that of the overachieving, do-it-herself, hands-on, supermom of 8, yet we know it was fake. She doesn't work outside the home. She has help with the kids, with cooking and cleaning and the kids are not as involved in outside activities as your daughter seems to be, reducing her involvement outside the home w/them. You're living the life of a real mom in society today - she's NOT and never has. Don't compare yourself to a false image created to market a tv show or cookbook or 'brand'.

TFW with her 'branding' has always been intentional to impress and amaze others. She and her managers worked hard to create the image. Read her twitter tl and you'll see the young girls and new moms gushing over how hard she works and being amazzzzzzed at how she does it all. But, how did they get this opinion of her? They watched the show and read her tweets - created to reinforce the 'image'.

Just remember that it's smoke and mirrors and FAR from the experiences of working moms all over the country. We saw what they wanted us to see and she tells us what she wants us to know to perpetuate that image, but it is only a fraction of the truth.

I wonder if Kate is up late and then sleeps in, and her kids look after themselves. TFW is very, very, very lazy and I don't think she does any work around the house or takes care of her kids.

The only work Kate will ever do is twitter, lousy cookbook, and of course the old use her kids to make money for her. Exploitation at its best!

Ammo is getting scarce!

This morning I lucked out and was able to buy two boxes of ammo.

I placed the boxes on the front seat and headed back home, but stopped at a gas station where a drop-dead gorgeous blonde in a short skirt was filling up her car at the next pump.

She glanced at the two boxes of ammo, bent over and leaned in my passenger window, and said in a sexy voice, "I'm a big believer in barter, old fella. Would you be interested in trading sex for ammo?"

I thought for a few seconds and asked, "What kind of ammo 'ya got?"

Guess who the picture of the blond is?? Kate Gosselin in a short dress pumping gas! If anyone can tell me how to post this e-mail so you just get the joke please let me know and I'll post it.

Seriously, I would think twice about making this. I don't think we need a "guinea pig" or first hand experience to say this recipe is utter crap and actually unhealthy to boot.
The soy alone adds about 5000-8000 mg of sodium. Soy is to be used as a condiment, not a stock.

My parents would occasionally take us to a family-owned ice cream place that was a bit of a drive into the "country". It was a treat for us and no, it wasn't a bribe or reward, it just WAS, because we did it as a family and all enjoyed it together.
Dad would drive the old station wagon with us in the "way, way back" (how did we ever survive those death traps!) and when we parked there, he'd pull down the rear door and we'd sit with our legs hanging over the edge, eating ice cream cones.
Just. Because.

If you know an 8 year old with a FB account, you should report it to FB. I've done it and they have removed the account. There is no reason for an 8 year old to have a FB account and it is potentially dangerous. There is a REASON that FB has an age limit.

Seriously, I would think twice about making this. I don't think we need a "guinea pig" or first hand experience to say this recipe is utter crap and actually unhealthy to boot.
The soy alone adds about 5000-8000 mg of sodium. Soy is to be used as a condiment, not a stock.
Please, spare your blood pressure!
-----------------

Just Googled soy sauce and, yep, you're exactly right. 1/4 cup can have over 7000 mg of sodium. Kate is no cook. It may be very difficult to actually test her recipes and eat properly. I'd like to see them, but not sure I want someone duplicating them.

I guess HCI has no control over what goes in a cookbook?

My god, that is AWFUL. Making the recipes could be fun but not if they put your health at risk. There will be plenty to chose from in the crookbook that don't contain that much sodium.

It takes us 5 months to run through one big bottle of soy sauce and we eat a lot of Asian inspired dishes. It shouldn't be used in large quantities like that, it's not right! LOL. I've always thought of soy sauce as the Asian substitute for salt. If I want something to be Asian inspired I substitute salt for soy sauce. A few little squirts for a whole meal is plenty.

So either TLC didn't give a crap about Kate and hadn't confirmed, with her, the rumors that by that time were flying, or Kate didn't give a crap about her fans and outright lied to them. Does anyone believe Kate hadn't heard the rumors and didn't know what was going on?

&&&

I do kinda believe the network didn't communicate with her. That's kind of how they are. They...don't....care. There are dozens of stories on the internet of celebs not even knowing when their own show was cancelled. It's rude and not very appreciative, but apparently it's how some of the networks roll. Apparently even networks don't like to fire people so if they don't really have to deal with them directly, they won't.

There is another tweet, maybe someone could find it, where someone asked Kate WHY the show was cancelled. Kate's reply was that she had NO IDEA.

Obviously the show was cancelled for low ratings (um, this calls for a DUHH.) But I also took that to mean that no one had told her why. So, no one ever sat her down and went over the numbers with her and explained that the downward trend was a problem and it better start going up to X amount or they were done? Could very well be. Kate was just the "talent" expected to hit her mark. It was the network who was concerned about how to get good ratings.

I sort of believe it. They didn't care and didn't want her opinion. It was one of those when we want your opinion we'll give it to you situations. And when they decided show was over it was done, they couldn't care less what Kate or anyone had to say about that. This is why I sort of laugh when people ask Kate when are YOU bringing the show back or when are YOU doing a special? Kate doesn't have a single thing to do with it. For whatever reason, probably because she is more of a liability than an asset, they've decided not to bother with it. They don't care what Kate thinks or what she wants and Kate certainly has no power to make them do a show. Meanwhile they keep on making specials with the little people even sending them on trips to Costa Rica lol.

Now all that said, anyone with half a brain and a reality check could see this show was done, we all saw it coming months ahead of time. So to act so out of touch about it and to even send your poor unsuspecting fans out to Walmart parking lots trying to save it is embarrassing and sad.

Kate's recipe calls for 1/2 cup. From Amazon:

Farm to Table Stir Fry
Serves 8-10

I came up with this recipe on my own out of pure necessity! I wanted to know how to make a delicious stir fry but never found a recipe I liked. One day, in the middle of the summer, when fresh beautiful produce was aplenty, I decided to experiment. I started by combining the oil and soy sauce together and was really just winging it. At some point, Cara came into the kitchen. She saw what I was making and said, 'That needs sesame seeds' and kept walking. I added Cara's magical ingredient and our stir fry was born! I made the dish three times that week. We just couldn't get enough of it. . . .

½ cup soy sauce
1 teaspoon brown sugar

Link:
http://www.amazon.com/Kate-Gosselins-Love-Mix-Family-Friendly/dp/0757317642

It's like "OMG!! Sugar is so bad for you, so I'll only use 1 tsp!!"
Seriously, 1/2 cup soy sauce (never, ever seen this in a recipe, unless it's a marinade which you toss afterwards).
This reminds me of her 1 tsp. of feta in a wrap.
One tsp. is NOTHING in giving you the offset of sweet to the overwhelming salt in the soy. Which goes back to what I've asserted before, that Kate does not understand flavor profiles. She just throws crap together without really putting on her thinking cap.
To really understand other cuisines, you must understand their flavor profiles and base, starter ingredients, such as garlic and ginger, *the* foundation of Chinese stir fry dishes.
Just reviewing the recipe is prima facie evidence that this "stir fry" is truly not worth your time or money.

When I look at Kate's boloney explanation of this dish being made by "necessity" because there aren't any good ones out there, I just cringe.
There are many recipes, a veritable encyclopedia of authentic recipes out there, written by people who grew up eating this cuisine, and/or, cooking for a living.
But, I'm supposed to believe that this hausfrau from PA knows the "real deal" when it comes to good stir fry?
No. Stick to PB&J's cut diagonally dear.
Finally, let's see how an expert, Martin Yan, makes Beef Stir Fry, shall we?
http://www.yancancook.com/menus/31/week31_entree01.html

Hmmm.... Martin uses 1 tsp. of soy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, Kate's stir fry should come with a health warning and a PSA.

Yet this woman somehow makes me question my mothering skills! I only have one child, she has Eight My one child does make her bed (after being reminded) somewhat picks up after herself. Yet when I read twitter feed or here I come away with a sense of failure? Am I not doing enough. I know she has 7 more children than me but why do I feel so inferior? I do what I do (what we all do) work a full time job, cook, clean, do laundry, grocery shop, organize

This is EXACTLY why I don't like TFW!! She makes new/younger moms with less children feel bad about themselves because of the lies she perpetuates! Keeping up the illusion that she does everything on her own, with no help etc.

Why tease yourself. Don't bother.

I understand not knowing much about cooking if you don't really spend a lot of time reading up about it and/or watching cooking shows. Everyone is into different things and some people just aren't into cooking, who cares. But by her own admission cooking is what she DOES. This is the number one thing she talks about. She devotes hours upon hours of time to the kitchen. It's her hobby and passion apparently. For that reason this is just sad. She doesn't know basics. Basics! She has no understanding of what does what or what things are called. And her understanding of the most basic of nutrition concepts is elementary. This is like watching someone toil away at the clarinet year after year and never be able to play a note that doesn't squeak. After awhile, maybe it's just not for you. Either that or you're not really trying, studying, learning.

So TFMJG can't buy her daughter a nice camera so she can't support her daughters passion?

But she can use her that daughter to plug her lame website.

I bet she'll be grifting a camera for the twins b-day or for Christmas.

There are people who watch someone else do a project or make a crepe and say "Well, that looks easy! I can do THAT!" They have no concept of the preparation, times of previous trial and errors, the subtle hand it can take.
What you see is far along the journey of learning, tweaking and critical eyes. What you don't see is what it took to get to that point.

I think "ooh, that looks great!" might be TFW's approach to most things. I can dance. I can write. I can cook. I can be a TV host. I don't have to take a class. I don't have to do any background work or build a resume. It looks so easy I can't fail at it. Here, gimme a spoon. Here, gimme some dance shoes. Here, gimme a microphone. I can do it all! (Milo said so.) Just watch me shine!

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

She should get her a real camera ANYWAY and encourage her to slow down a second. She could do so much more with it. I KNEW those were iphone photos. Kids these days want everything to be instant. A real camera takes a bit longer but not that much anymore now that it's all digital, and she will be amazed. If she wants to pursue photography in college someday or even high school, they're going to want you to know some basics about aperture/shutter speed/ISO that you simply can't control much with just an iphone.

Fido that's exactly it. Like a child who sees a professional football player and says oh I can do that! Very juvenile mindset. Also no self awareness at what you're hot at what you're not at.

I still can't make crepes!

Just Google, as TFW should have done, " how much soy sauce in a stir-fry" and you will easily see how salty her special recipe is.
It is appalling that she thinks she can cook. As for sesame seeds, they should be toasted and sprinkled as a garnish. And Kate, honey, Asian cooking is complex - adding soy sauce is just part of the flavor.

Tuckers Mom> I took a class in Chinese cooking, and soy sauce and brown sugar or regular sugar are usually used as a meat marinade. Which you do pryer to cooking the meat. And you only used enough(like tsp to a tlsp and about a bag or 2 of sugar(the little ones, that you put in coffee) then mix your meat, then cover and put in frig, for about an hour to overnight. I don't remember the teacher ever putting soy sauce directly into wok, especially not that much, a little goes a long way. As for oil you cook with sesame is very over powering, so a little goes a very long way.

As for putting the meat & veggies in, the teacher would take out the meat and then steam the veggies, then put the meat back in, and then put in a sauce, like oyster sauce, not too much. Also, most stir fry they use bok choy(chinese cabbage) not both bok choy and regular cabbage, both veggies have very different flavors, regular cabbage is very strong, and cooks down to a like spinach, where as bok choy if steamed right will remain cooked but crispy/crunchy). That's what I learned, and yes, the teacher was a chinese woman. She always said to us, you must watch your salt, everything from the chicken broth or veggies broth, to the soy sauce or other sauces, she recommended low sodium, everything.

I took one for the team and made Kate's turkey chili. But some parts her recipe made my stomach churn, so I had to make changes. For example: I used the extra-lean ground turkey, but there's still fat in there once it's browned, and she doesn't say to drain it (or even suggest the extra lean kind). So, I browned the turkey, drained it, then added italian dressing afterward (I didn't have and balsamic vinaigrette on hand). I sautéed the onions and garlic in another pan, and actually added them to the meat. Kate never mentions what to do with them in her recipe. Perhaps she wants us to cook them and then throw them away? Oh, well, into the mix they went. Next, I'm sure you all have notice how slimy and disgusting canned white beans are. I rinsed mine before adding them, which she doesn't even suggest. They are just too gross-looking right out of the can. And I'm sure rinsing them helps lower the sodium content. As for the corn, well, no way am I going to put canned corn in a dish when there is fresh corn available at the farm stand right down the road from my house. I used the fresh stuff. Why does the recipe include fresh basil and not fresh corn? Weird. I pretty much followed the rest of the recipe the way she had it, except I left out the cilantro because we don't like it.
So, how was the finished product? It was.... okay. Pretty mediocre, that's for sure, and that's after getting rid of the disgusting stuff like the grease and the bean slime, and reducing the sodium by rinsing the beans and using the fresh corn. It's odd that, after all the sodium in canned corn and beans, she actually has even more salt listed as an ingredient. Would I make it again? No. My kids tried it, but there were no cheers from them. I asked them to rate it on a scale from 1-10, and it got about a 4.5. Not a glowing review. If the whole cookbook is like this, then she needs to just take the whole manuscript out in the backyard, bury it, and forget it ever existed.

Loycalyocal> that is true about Asian cooking and a lot or most cooking. Like about garlic, usually you chop the garlic finely and put in wok with a tbsp of oil and cook first then put in say beef cubes, and cook, then once beef is cooked take out and steam veggies and then put meat back in toss and them put over rice or noodles. The garlic does not over power dish, cause it is in the meat and the little bit of oil left, that has the dripping, from the meat & garlic. Unless you want a garlic dish. I would have kicked Kate out of the kitchen, at the start, just like she had done many times to Jon. A lot of dishes, cakes, etc, you have to put things in at a certain order. I was watching a cooking show and they were doing barbeque, and why you cook meat first and then put sauce on, not put sauce on raw meat then cook(you can, meat might be tuff, raw in places, and does not taste as good as it could and it takes longer), .

I agree with you about Kate and her fans attempting to make other mothers feel inadequate just because we don't have exactly 8 kids. We may work full-time, cook, clean, do laundry, iron, help the kids with homework...but because we don't have 8 kids (and a houseful of helpers) we basically don't know what hard work is.

I have mentioned before that I have a friend with 13 kids. Now, she makes me feel inadequate. Or, to be more accurate, I make myself feel inadequate when I see all that she does. 13 kids. A husband who works long hours. No outside help. She had my kids and me over for a fun tradition that she and her kids enjoy--afternoon tea. We used real china that had been her grandmother's (she uses eBay to add pieces to her original set, so there was enough for all of us). We had cute little sandwiches with the crusts cut off, cookies, fruit, veggies, and tea or hot chocolate. The kids loved it. And to her, it is all so easy. Bread from the bread machine--just measure out ingredients and push a button. How easy is that? Cookies--just mix up the dough, and then scoop and bake as needed. Simple as can be! Slice up some fruit, brew a couple pots of tea. Everyone pitches in to clean up. Can you imagine Kate preparing afternoon tea for 22 people? She'd have to spend a week in bed recuperating from the effort of masterminding the servants who do the actual work.

**Some of us here were talking recently about British TV shows we liked, and I was just tickled to see that M's tea set was the same as the one that Hyacinth has on the Britcom called Keeping Up Appearances. It's the one Hyacinth is always bragging about--her "Royal Doulton with the hand-painted periwinkles". But it's actually made by Colclough, and the pattern is called Braganza. That just tickled the heck out of me, because I love my British shows.

Iphonography has recently emerged as something pretty legitimate and becoming more accepted in the photography world. But, almost all great iphonographers have an SLR camera and understand why a photo came out the way it did. You then take that understanding and apply it to iphonography.

You can get lucky and take a great iphone photograph. Or you can really understand photography and get phenomenal shots with the iPhone the majority of the time.

This is sort of just a general "the good ole days" gripe but it is really hard to see artists with real talent skipping understanding an SLR and resorting to just an iphone because it's quick and simple. That talent could be completely unleashed with an SLR. Just get her an SLR. I promise she'll pick it up. She will be wowed by what you can do with the aperture you can't on iphone unless you fake it. She will understand her iphone on a whole new level. If you look at most photography majors, almost all legitimate programs REQUIRE that you first learn to shoot on a film SLR. Not because they are trying to cling to a dying technology. But because there is tremendous value in understanding those systems to the fullest extent and being able to shoot the photo perfectly in camera, no editing post camera, before you go on to use the "crutch" that advanced technology has provided us.

I've got my husband watching it and he goes crazy because he thinks the acting is awful but he can't tear his eyes away. Followed by Inspector Gently which is another one I like. Unfortunately, Inspector Gently is now on reruns and I don't think there are new seasons. There's a new British crime drama starting Wednesday night on BBCAmerica called Broadchurch that looks good. Law & Order UK starts up again soon. Can't wait.

I hate to say it but I'm starting to agree with Shelby. There are such glaring problems with these recipes it's pretty obvious it's going to come out too salty or what have you. I was going to jump in on a few of them but now I'm second guessing that unless I see one I really think will come out edible enough.

If Silimom still wants to I will still post it however I was thinking in the alternative, maybe alongside her reviews we could share similar recipes that we DO like. For instance when Silimom reviews the turkey chili, I have a great veggie version recipe I adore that I could share from a blog called The Picky Eater.

Just for the hell of it I looked up different chili recipes (turkey, white chicken, venison, etc.) and every one that I looked at used canned beans and all said drained and rinsed. Maybe that's how TFW changed it up to make it her own.

Regarding the stir fry recipe, I'm game to try it, even though I suspect it's going to come out bad. I am, however, going to reduce the recipe, as I said before, by half. I'm not sure how big a wok she has, but mine won't accommodate that many snow peas or that much cabbage and broccoli.

This shows a lot of attention to the method of cooking stir fry. Asian condiments are generally, very salty and you usually don't see instructions to salt and pepper "to taste" because the salt is already in there.
Agree with someone else who mentioned the sesame seeds are a garnish at the end. You don't cook them!

Tucker's Mom said...

Thank you for making the chili! I totally agree with your choices to drain the beans and use fresh corn. Frozen would be fine too.
Great point about using fresh basil, but frozen corn.

I know who they see and who the parents are.

Did look at Kate's web page, her daughter's photography is good. She is capable of keeping crack pots away from those kids by limiting exposure but giving them some freedoms with the social network.

Think she(Kate) has keep the kids away from the exposure pretty well over the last couple of years. I don'tknow what she has on her mind, but if her cookbook does not sell, she makes money, if not, she goes away and we don't have to go to her web site. I think she is all over and nothing that happens now will bring her the fame that the family had years ago. These reality shows are worse than ever and she has had her turn. If she were going to be TV, it would have happened. But if she can spin a cookbook into something else, more power to her, but I don't think anyone cares. I buy cookbooks from true experts or icons of their cuisine. For example, if you want to learn about baking bread and making pizza, you turn to Peter Reinhart's books, such as The Breadbaker's Apprentice, Artisan Breads Everyday and American Pie (this is THE pizza bible).
These books get down to the science and chemistry of baking and it's fascinating. It's not 'OMG, I'm such a great pizza maker because I dump ingredients into a machine!!".
If you really want to master bread and pizza, it takes lots of work and lots of dedication. It's not easy!
Another master is Julia Child for French cuisine for the American home and yet another is Marcella Hazan for Northern Italian cuisine. Seriously, you'll never make a better bolognese. It transformed how I made this "meat sauce" and really, it's pretty easy, but takes time and tlc to yield its almost indescribable goodness.
Oh, one more master's book that you should avail yourself of is anything Jacques Pepin, in particular, The Essential Pepin.

TFMJG does not a cook. She is an assembler. I have a cookbook that uses Trader Joe's products as a base. It is basically just assembling the ingredients--there is very little actual preparing. I happen to love Trader Joe's, but this was no Joy of Cooking.

I used to buy cookbooks more frequently but it's quite true that the internet has modified that habit. I will now buy them only if there is a story, or perhaps from a chef/restaurant that intrigues me, that interests me. Or maybe an ingredient, like the David Leibowitz book, Scoop, about ice cream.

DH does most of the grilling and I guess he has decided to take it up a notch because he bought a Weber grill cookbook published by Sunset. Last night he gave it a whirl; we had grilled scallops and shrimp, basted with a pesto of tarragon, parsley, lemon and pistachio. The extra pesto was tossed with angel hair pasta. Pretty damn good.

Otherwise, my recipes are either torn from the cooking mags I still like to read or printed off the 'net. TFW cannot compare to any of us here, from what I read. She is, once again, waay out of her league. And here's a tip - even a home cook needs to edit, and test recipes, plus feeding them to people other than your kids would be a good idea too. Her work is like a stream of conscious term paper; no research, no resources, no editing.

kids first said...

If the cookbook does go to print it will be one more piece of evidence in her box of Things She Should Not Have Done. That box keeps getting fuller! And the fuller it gets the less likely is her dream of being on TV again.

White Organza said...

Oh, bonté divine, Orange Crusher, I would eat at your place anytime! It's almost noon, here, in my neck of the wood, and the idea of those grilled scallops with tarragon pesto sounds so deliciously delicious.

And this is how you can tell if a person knows her way in the kitchen. When you start salivating just hearing about the menu. In my case, it never ever happened while reading TFW's bragging about her 10/10 meals.

Tucker's Mom... Your story about your dad driving you kids to get ice cream cones brought back such good memories of my own childhood. Over and over - actually, copyrighting recipes is a very interesting subject. We talked about it here before. You can list her ingredients verbatim online with no infringement issues. You could even post her directions as long as you describe the process in a generic way.

What you can't do is copy or post anything from her book directly like her wording of the recipe method.

Here's one link but for more info simply google "copyrighting recipes".

There use to be a guy who did the local news called: Mr food. He would whip things up, from stuff you already had in your kitchen. I heard on the Living Well station that there is a web-site, that if you go there and put in, what you have in your pantry & frig, it will give you recipes to make from stuff you have. I'm going to look into it. I really hate recipes that call for some weird food item, that I don't have. And usually that odd item comes in a bulk like amount, and if I don't like it, I'm stuck with the rest, Just for a tbsp. Silimom said...

Thanks TFW and the other poster who made the Chili. I wasn't looking forward to that one.

I did a first draft of the hummus review with a few pictures, cost of organic vs non organic, etc. but am waiting for feedback from Admin. We've been busy with family visiting so it was written rather piecemeal.

As I start this project, it makes me wonder how she gets her kids to eat all of this food. My kids were/are picky eaters and for many casserole/mixed together dishes were not favorites. They eat a wide variety, but they prefer fruits and veggies raw, meat as a stand alone item and same for carbs. So a plate might be chicken, a scoop of noodles with a little butter and salad or baby carrots or steamed broccoli plain followed by sliced strawberries or an apple etc.

Is this just my kids or are a lot of kids like that? I suppose I cater to mine too much, I just frankly don't feel like pulling the old "You eat what I serve or you go hungry" game. I just always make sure that there is one or two things my younger kids will eat if I make a main dish I know they won't like. My kids will always try a bite and that's fine for me. My older kids are much more adventurous now in their food choices.

I guess I'm just saying that her recipes aren't ones I would normally try as they aren't very "family friendly" for my bunch. It will be interesting to cook some from her cookbook, but I'm leaning towards Admin's suggestion and just trying those that seem worth trying or ones people here are curious about.

What do you all think?

But some folks, especially those on a limited income, such as retired couples, can't afford to eat out at every meal. Even if their children are grown and out of the house, they still need to eat, and therefore cooking is required. It's not always an option to head over to the local restaurant for three meals per day.

NJGal51 said...

That's the thing Over In TFW's County, her food is not bad enough to make you throw up but it's not good enough to make you want to cook it again without a lot of tweaking. I made her hummus and followed the recipe exactly, however after tasting I had to tweak it a bit so it wouldn't go to waste.

OrangeCrusher1 said...

No, I am also surprised that her young children will eat all the glopped foods she puts together. It is rather the norm for kids to like their foods plainer: a chicken leg, plain noodles, raw fruits and vegetables, etc. one of the grandsons, who looves ketchup, wants it only on the plate for dipping, do NOT squeeze it on the hot dog in the bun. Of course the same kid likes chow mein. With 8 kids, pretty sure a lot more of that goes on than In Control TFW will admit.

Dmasy said...

Silimom, my experience with children is similar to yours. Kids mostly like food that is separate in personality. My son (Oh, so long ago...) was not a picky eater, but he would not have really liked glopped together food.

When I have young guests, I still fix a meat, a veggie and a starch -- all individual.

We never had a "clean your plate" rule. I still wouldn't force a child to eat something they didn't like. "Try a tiny bite" is the fair way to approach a new food.

Silimom, you should like a caring mother who wants meal time to be a pleasant experience.

readerlady said...

Silimom -- Most of the kids I know are like yours. And Orange -- We KNOW what happens to her kids who object to the food she serves. They get more of it, and it gets served to them until it gets eaten. Remember when Mady complained about having to eat eggplant parmigiana three days in a row? I imagine her kids just choke down anything that gets slopped in front of them because they know the alternative will be worse.

I won't be making any of TFMJGs recipes, but I'm interested in hearing how they turn out for Silimom and any other brave soul who tries them out. Just based on the descriptions of the things TFMJG labels "yum", I don't think the woman has any taste buds.

Joy, thanks for the virtual shore vacay. I was quiet, but I loved it. Just sitting quietly, watching the waves come in to shore, is soul-restoring for me. I loved the ghost tour but didn't participate in some of the more strenuous activities. Just gazing at all the male pulchritude present was enough to set my heart racing and raise my blood pressure a few points, LOL. The steel band was a nice touch. When are you planning to have the West Coast event?

fidosmommy said...

For me, texture is as important as flavor. If a dish is full of canned items, the texture will probably be mushy. Unless mushy is to be expected (mashed potatoes, for example) I would rather have some crunch or at least a mix of textures. I guess that's why I don't care for most casseroles. Lasagna is great, but things like chicken pot pie, vegetable soups, etc. do not appeal to me. Give me the chicken, the
starch and the vegetables separate on a plate, please. And make those veggies raw! CrrrrUNCH!

I would starve at TFW's house. Not an edible meal in sight.

Ex Nurse said...

I think we know what we need to about TFJGW's cookbook. I hate to have all of these innocent family members be guinea pigs! I guess if you prepare tasteless food, it requires massive amounts of salt.

The few times I have used ground turkey, there is a lot of water that needs to be drained--especially extra-lean. I wonder if any of the meals have any fat? I worry that the kids are not getting a healthy amount of fat in their diets. Fat-free does not equal more healthy.

OrangeCrusher1 said...

So the kids are really better off with her famous lunch boxes, full of separate foods in the little containers. Nothing glopped together there.
And in my household, with just 2, and DH having one of those narrow palates ( no glop for him), IF I were to make one of the tragic recipes, it would be just me taking one bite, and tossing the rest. Not curious enough to spend the $$ on ingredients and then waste the food. Her recipes would be excruciating to follow because I actually know how to cook.

Oh yes I do. I was appalled about it when she said it, but in light of her "I'll serve it as many times as you don't eat it" philosophy, I am horrified. What a cruel thing to do to a child, and a stunningly poor way to have a child learn an appreciation for food or for the
work of cooking it. TFW really needs to rethink
this policy for the sake of her children.

I bet she does the same with her tiny portions she serves at dinner.

*******
Remember she tweeted once that she starts them out with small portions and then they could get another one? I took that to mean they ate their tiny portions and if they wanted more they could have more. You know, a happy mealtime event. I guess I was wrong.

____

I do remember and from her tweeted photos you can see the small portions as well.

When I was a kid me and my brothers all ways got a nice sized portion of food. And if we wanted more we could get it.

I just don't see the point of controlling food. They're growing kids which means they need to be fulfilled.

LOL be careful what you wish for.... I bet TFW is wishing a pap, any pap, would snap her picture about now, but it seems they don't care anymore. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

The results are in. Let me preface it by saying that I didn't announce where the recipe came from because I didn't want to influence the ratings in any way. I just said I found it online, which is true because I got it on the Amazon site. I used fresh basil and dried cilantro. There were seven people at the table, and none is a picky eater. Kids like slopped foods, love casseroles and Hamburger Helper (cheesy shells). I served it with a nice salad and crusty rolls. Maybe if you had a few glasses of wine before the meal it would go down a lot smoother.

Number One rated it a 1.5
Number Two rated it a 4
Number Three rated it a 2.5
Number Four rated it a 0
Number Five rated it a 3
Number Six rated it a 1.5
Number Seven rated it a 7

Number Seven happens to be my nephew, a college student who will eat anything because he says that everything is preferable to what they serve in the dining hall, and he's a starving kid. I put what wasn't eaten (basically most of it) into containers for him to take home and freeze.

Bottom line...I wouldn't waste my time or money on this one. I'm sure there must be some good recipes in the book, but this wasn't one of them.

We had pizza delivered in lieu of the chili!

Sorry -- I forgot to mention that the rating was on a scale from 1 to 10.

I can't wait to hear how your chili turned out. I had to tweak mine--I just couldn't help myself. I knew I'd have a picture of those slimy beans in my mind and I wouldn't be able to take a single bite. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't anything I would ever make again. And nobody wanted to finish theirs, let along refill their bowls over and over as TFMJG claimed.

Want to try a really, really yummy soup? The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook has an amazing chicken corn chowder that might be available online. I think she (Ina Garten) posts some of her recipes on the Food Network site. That one is a staple in our house, and so is her parmesan chicken, which is so good that my kids just call it "awesome chicken". Nothing fancy, just really good, yummy food. TFMJG will never compare.

Too funny! If anyone else tries this and gets negative results maybe you could box it up and FedX it to Kate since her kids rave about every.single.thing she cooks.

Okay I did it. I actually did it. I made the chili exactly according to her directions, no rinsing slime, no cutting the recipe in half, no fresh corn, no tweaking...just as it appears.
*******
Thank you for taking one for the team! I'm glad you had delivery on speed dial!
I think the G kids have the same mindset as your college student-- this is as good as it gets.
Hey, no wonder they might want to travel and even film again. The food is better!
Kobe beef anyone?

Tucker's Mom said...

I made the Barefoot Contessa's Cheddar Corn Chowder every summer, and triple the recipe so that I have several quarts saved for the winter.
As soon as I find really, really good corn at the farmers market, I'm going to pull the trigger on this recipe. So far this year, the corn hasn't been all that great :-(

Thanks, Orange! I thought I'd give it a try and give Kate the benefit of the doubt...no criticizing her recipes until they've actually been made. This wasn't horrible to the point where you couldn't eat it, and everyone has a different preference in food, but this chili just needed something, and I don't know what. My nephew will most likely eat every drop!

I was thinking about doing the Stir Fry tomorrow, but I don't know if I want to pay for another take-out dinner if it doesn't turn out. Plus, the amount of soy sauce scares me, I don't know what size bag of carrots to use, and I'm not sure how to saute and steam veggies at the same time!

My nephew won't be around, but I could put the leftovers into containers for him again. He won't refuse anything, and he stays so slim!

This is the most basic and generic help you can get. It's like when you called for help with your computer and they say, "check all the connections, unplug then replug".
Hey, it might do the trick. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
And your freezer has to be ancient to not be frost free, so that's really not helpful.
