PBS spoofs reality T.V.

A local New York PBS station has been launching a campaign against crappy reality T.V. And the T.V. spots they've produced and released this month are smart and funny.

PBS produced the first ever reality T.V. show, An American Family, and has been home to some of the finest reality T.V. since, from The Farmer's Wife to Frontline's Poor Kids. PBS has proven there is such a thing as quality reality T.V. No surprise watching other networks put out pure sludge these days must be frustrating to the network!

Here are some of PBS's hilarious spoofs. They're so spot on, you can barely tell they're parodies.

Meet the Tanners, about a family who loves the sun. "If you sass me you go to the shade!"

Long Island Landscapers. "Flamingos: elegant bird."

Clam Kings: "These two aren't shucking around!"

Didn't Katie Irene become Kate to fit the show's title better? Not her idea iirc.

Katie was "Kate" before the marriage and before the show. In fact, if you watch the engagement video, Jon calls her "Kate."

Let's buy her cookbook and snark on it. Let's waste our money and time making her recipes just so we can bitch about her. Really? We all know Kate is full of shit...everything she says is a lie...we have had what 5 years to prove this? I see no reason to give her this attention.

I'm sorry but, this is not taking one for the team. Who really gives a shit enough to take time out of their day to cook like Kate? Same with following her twitter and what not....Why do you care? Why waste your time on this when you know she speaks nothing but lies?
As for her cooking? We all know she controls the kids with food. Eat what I cook or else!!! The portions she claims to cook is NOT enough to feed a family of 9...We get this. Call her out for being a child and animal abuser...it's that simple. To give her any other attention is just feeding the kate wagon."

**************************

I don't believe anyone other than Kate's handful of fans "carry a torch for Kate". I also don't consider people who frequent this blog haters by definition either. Critics, yes, sure. Hater implies an active pursuit of making her aware of said hate. I don't see our discussions here as qualifying. As far as I know, most of us wouldn't even know what was going on on her twitter feed if it weren't posted here.

I also don't think that the tangents pursued here are a reflection of ignoring the major issues most of us have with Kate's abusive behaviour toward her children and animals.

Neither are they doing anything to keep Kate relevant. Kate is NOT relevant except in her own delusional mind.

Would I personally bother making any recipes from Kate's cookbook? No, probably not. To me it seems like a potential waste of good food. But I see nothing wrong if someone wants to do that and wants to share their results here.

Who is that hurting? I just don't understand the knot in your knickers about it.

Yes, we all feel strongly that Kate has been abusive but that's no secret. It's out there, she's been reported to Child Services, there's even been a e-book published about it. What more can be accomplished by merely rehashing the accusations? Frankly, it's out of our hands.

I mean this with all due respect and I can tell you obviously feel very strongly about it. I just have to disagree with the premise that any discussion of things "Katie Irene" that don't include abuse are keeping her relevant. I just don't see it.

Starz22 - Actually, one of my reasons for doing this project is because I don't want to snark on her cookbook. I already explained this in the 4th of July post.

If her cookbook is released, it will be dismissed simply because it was written by Kate. That's a given for many people.

It will also be discussed here. So rather then just trashing it, let's have an informed discussion about it. And to do that, someone or someones have to cook her recipes and review the cookbook.

While we discuss many things here, the name of the blog is still 15 Minutes Gosselin Style. This cookbook is part of her attempt to hold onto her 15 minutes of fame and will be discussed. Let's do that like adults rather than the twitter rabble who behave like middle schoolers.

You know, Kate goes on and on about not being able to find a man because of her "baggage" which is to say, her children. It can not be Jon. Jon moved on a loooooooong time ago. She's blaming her kids. But, here's the thing-- I don't think it's so much that, than it is Kate would never blend another man's kids into her own.
I don't think she could step mother them and blend a family. If I were a guy with kids, dating Kate, I'd watch very carefully to see how she treated my kids.
Besides, it would ruin the brand Kate + 8.

Marie - True, we have discussed her Menu Monday postings before but to the best of my knowledge the only thing someone made before and actually tried was the hummus and their opinion was that it wasn't horrible but used way too much lemon.

It may be that all her recipes are awful. I don't think they will be. My husband and I were discussing recipe copyright. It's actually kind of interesting. For example, I can post online the list of her ingredients. That is not copyright infringement. However, I can't post her description of how she put it all together to make a dish. That is protected. Several blogs have done this. I followed a woman's blog who cooked her way through Thomas Keller and Greg Achatz (lots of intricate, painstaking detail and molecular gastronomy) books. Her blogs are amazing.
The recipes have the ingredients and the process, but in her own words describing what she did, not specific measurements and techniques. Many photos and brilliant narration too. But there it was. It can be done.
Keep in mind that this is how Kate's recipes came to be. Well many of them, and why she can slap her name and her kids names on them.
Nothing original. Nothing blatantly plagiarized, but tweaked enough.
Anyone can do it. I mean, who owns the original meatball reicpe? The original lasagna recipe? The original omelette recipe?

NJGal51 said...

I'm the one that made Kate's hummus recipe. As I said it was not horrible but I thought it had too much lemon and not enough spice. If I were Kate I'd rename it and call it "lovely lemon" hummus or something like that. I tried it her way and then tweeted to fit my taste. The thing that I Lund interesting was that organic wasn't mentioned for any of the ingredients, just 3 cans of this, 2 of that, etc.

I'm looking forward to Sillimom's cooking project also. I'd be willing to bet that none of them are Kate's kreations but rather established recipes that's she's tweaked. If you're not interested in the project don't read the posts.

My expectation is a typical church recipe book made for charity. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but when I look at the culinary mistakes that I've seen from just a handful of Kate's recipes, I'm pretty sure I'm going to see more.
For example, Kate's Pork and Sauerkraut Menu Monday lists the pork like this:
Ingredients:
9 – center cut boneless pork chops (can also use bone-in chops or a 3 pound pork roast)
... center cut chops are VERY different by a pork roast, and by pork roast, I'm guessing that she means shoulder/butt/picnic. If you are not familiar with cuts of meat and how they are best treated, you'd be up the creek wondering why you are eating dry pork.
Chops are best cooked quickly, while shoulder is best cooked low and slow.
The results with these 2 cuts are going to be night and day.
Kate also mentions "coarse salt". What is that exactly? I use almost exclusively Kosher salt, but know my salts and know that I've never seen Morton's Coarse Salt. I've seen their Kosher salt, and I've seen their table salt, but nope, not coarse salt.
Kate's fans buying this book seem to be to be novice cooks. I think they'll be disappointed and frustrated with the nebulous recipes.

Kate lives in the past. Shades of Baby Jane and Norma Desmond. She thinks that by posting these photos, fans are going to gush over them and still see them as toddlers, remembering Kate and kids in their moment in the limelight. She's keeping her "celebrity-ism" alive this way. It's all she knows.

And it's sad.

I'm thinking of Betty White's comment that in her day, looking at other people's vacation photos was considered punishment. Who, other than a few die-hard fans, would be interested in seeing photos of other people's baby/toddler photos? The networks? Not a chance.

I have been around pork and kraut all of my life, and never once have I ever seen anyone use chops, either at home, in restaurants, or on New Year's Day, instead of a pork roast when making it. At least in this part of the state they don't! I can't imagine that chops wouldn't get tough. I suppose it could be done, but I wouldn't want to try it. You want to use a roast so when it cooks, it gets so tender that it just falls apart and mixes with the kraut.

Now I've got a craving for it. Let's see -- I think it's the Monday special at the local country restaurant. Bet dollars to donuts that the pork will be a roast, not chops!

Me too! I do have a small picnic butt in my freezer and am probably going to low and slow it for pulled pork bbq. That and summer corn is heaven!
I admit that I've done chops to make pork and kraut, and it can "pass with a push" because it's in liquid, but at 5 1/2 hours, it's going to be tough and dry and need every drop of the kraut/braise liquid.
Picnic shoulder is a different animal all together, so to speak ;-)

Excellent choice for pork and kraut. I've used that too.
Kate's recipe is for the slow cooker.
You could cook a whole roast (they vary in size) on the stove top. Same principle, low and slow. The oven or slow cooker is just a bit more "set it and forget it" and the heat surrounds vs. comes from the bottom.

It's not easy when you have to even work out of state sometimes and drive five hours home to pick up a sick child because mommy is off on some "working" VIP vacation out of town somewhere.

Exactly, Jon. It is so easy for the 1% to go on and on about deadbeat dads, isn't it?

I also think his understanding of divorce and how to best help kids through it and not push them to feel one way or another way, is so far beyond where Kate's learning curve has ever been it's just sad. He himself is a child of divorce, so he of the two of them should know.

Let's buy her cookbook and snark on it. Let's waste our money and time making her recipes just so we can bitch about her. Really? We all know Kate is full of shit...everything she says is a lie...we have had what 5 years to prove this? I see no reason to give her this attention.

I think Silimom explained several times on here that her purpose is NOT to snark on the book or bitch about Kate, but rather to give an honest review of the recipes. In fact, if any of it is good, I'm sure Silimom will say so. It has nothing to do with Kate being full of s$$t.

Nobody is asking anyone to waste their money. Buying her book is not a requirement, nor is reading the reviews or comments. You simply scroll past.

Cooking through cookbooks and then blogging about them is done all over the internet. I'm not sure why it's got some so strung out. It's not a big deal, just something fun to do!

I know Sillimom's motives are to be fair to the recipes but my motives are to snark, if something calls for snark. So sue me....wait, don't SUE me actually. :)

All of the Twitter talk about lawsuits...post the case number, state in which it was filed, docket number, attorneys of record, plaintiff/defendants...ANYTHING!
_______________________________

Would posting the attorneys' names help at all?
****
Not really. The two most helpful pieces of info would be the name of the case (Jane Doe v. Paul Roe, et al.), and the court where it was filed (+++++ County Superior Court, State of _______). With the name of the court, I can go to their website and if they provide online case access, I can check to see if a lawsuit has been filed in that court by McGibney, Kate Gosselin, or any other named plaintiff.

So if anyone ever comes across the name of the lawsuit, and even more importantly, the name of the court where the lawsuit is filed, that would allow someone to do some research to see if it's a real case.

Interesting interview. Very interesting.

"Oh yeah. I spend $300-$400 a weekend to feed everyone."

+++++++++++++++

There goes the sheeple's contention that Jon doesn't contribute anything to the support of the children, that Kate does it all on her own. Of course, they will say that he's lying.

Wow, thank you for finding this.
I'm trying to read in between post dinner clean up, but i just already feel like part of my sanity has been restored.
Jon just makes sense. He's REAL, not farting rainbows and unicorns.
He realizes this is a marathon, not a sprint and more importantly, it is NOT a popularity contest.
Thank goodness the kids have Jon to ground them and be their touchstone for sanity.

Agree Tucker.

I also like how he said look I was a child of divorce and at one point I wanted to live with my mom and another with my dad. Shrug, it depended. No sense in trying to tell the kid what to do or how to think or whose side they should be on, they are going to think and feel what they want.

This is the heart of alienation. Trying to direct how a child perceives a divorce like the conductor of an orchestra. It doesn't work that way. A good parent knows it just doesn't work that way. And sometimes in trying to let them think what they want, you may hear "I don't want to live with you." But it doesn't mean they don't love you, or they won't ever want to live with you, or that you can't have lots of special days together anyway, or that they aren't anything but a normal child going through the ups and downs and emotions of a sad divorce.

He just GETS IT. He respects his children, and in the long run, it will pay off.

Wow! What a great interview!! Sounds like he's really matured. And in some ways was always the more mature one.

I really fear that Kate has turned the twins against Jon. It's so sad. Mady once said she prefers Jon and Cara obviously did.

Make sure you click on Tweedle's colored link.

The first link took me to just one page of the interview.

Part 1 is 4 pages of Jon's words. Part 2 will be published tomorrow.

I thought it was a great interview. He represented himself so well.

Kate's fans are going to go berserk over their interpretation.

Oh and when he said one of the girls was saying Daddy I want to make my own sandwich myself, I thought gosh poor kids they want so desperately to break out and do big girl and boy things but probably can't under Kate's iron fist control of the food and other things. THey must just cut loose at Jon's.

There's a new post on the royal baby. Mazel tov!

Local I hope not but I fear that too.

But doesn't he have no internet or T.V. or both at his house? I say all the power to him for that but few 12 year olds are going to choose a no internet no T.V. house over a house that is fully wired. That kind of thing won't work if the kid has a choice. We're just too wired now for anything but the most unique of kids to be okay with that kind of thing.

I think they also pick up a lot of loneliness from Kate and feel bad for her, they may prefer to stay around and appease her. Not to mention a break from the little kids. Not to mention being able to have that whole huge house to themselves to have friends over.

There could be all kinds of things going on here with them, but ultimately it sounds like Jon is doing a great job respecting their feelings. They may change their minds or not, but I guarantee they will always appreciate Jon's patience and understanding.

''I don't think Jon needs to do an interview now whatsoever and I really don't get why he did this......''
~~~~~~
I also don't 'get' why Jon did the interview now, but as I read the interview, I found myself nodding in agreement over and over. I agreed with the interviewer, who said, ''I found Jon to be honest, open, articulate, and while not arrogant, certainly self-aware of the weight, whirlwind and occasional controversy his name can bring.''
KK can call him ''mediocre'' all she wants, but to me he is ''normal''! He has a 'normal' grasp of reality, a 'normal' way of understanding the needs of children, and especially children of divorced parents. To me, a 'normal' person would not want their divorce to be filmed....which would also film the children and their feelings. He sees the need for his children to function in the real world....
''I live in a private community but I take them to public places, why not? They have to know what the mall is like. They have to know there is a whole other world out there and the public has to accept them as normal people.'' I was glad to read that Jon is doing what we hoped he was doing...''Go to camp; enjoy clubs, and all that kind of stuff. And that’s what I’ve been doing and I think it’s been working really well. They have a lot of freedom here.''
I was also struck by his insight when he said in response to the interviewers question about custody battles and if Jon thinks it will get better: ''It’s still going on now. Its 4 years now. Custody battles, not agreeing, what are the rules, and court. It doesn’t bother me though because I want to do what’s best for my kids. If they want to stay at my house, they can stay at my house. The custody order is a guideline; it’s not set in stone. Who has legal? Who cares? It doesn’t matter. I mean, are you going to take me to court over that? Over what my kids want to do? Go ahead. That’s because my former wife sees it as ownership and not as togetherness. I just want to do what’s best for the kids. It doesn’t matter to me.''
He is still with his girlfriend, and he is starting another job that will allow him more time to spend with his kids. I think in spite of myself, I am glad he gave the interview, because it has confirmed what so many believed about Jon...that he is a nice, honest, 'normal' man who loves his children!
