Happy Fourth!

50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus

Independence Day is a day to honor and celebrate the birth of America, and the American spirit. One such couple that exemplifies just that were Philadelphians Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus.

In 1939, Gilbert, a lawyer, and Eleanor, who stayed home with their two small children, were very concerned about the impending war in Europe. The Krauses, Jewish themselves, traveled to Nazi occupied Germany. There, they orchestrated the rescue of 50 Jewish children back to the United States. Many of the children are still here and alive today.

The Kraus' bravery has been called a "quiet act of decency and humanity on the eve of one of modern history’s darkest chapters." On this special day, we remember the Krauses as just but one example of the American spirit. 50 Children is a short documentary which tells their remarkable story. Now that's a Pennsylvania couple whose reality is worth watching.

Available on HBOgo.com.

Please stop doing this. I like it here and it's normally completely spoiler free. Aren't there tons of places to discuss these two shows you love so much?

It's sound bites. Kate's putting out sound bites that she KNOWS little piddly sites like Examiner will pick up. Let's face it, if she tweeted she passed gas, Effie would write:
"Well, it seems that Kate had a little indigestion and made a foo foo. What do you think her precious pooters smell like?"

But seriously, that tweet and future similar tweets will wind up on gossip sites to generate buzz. We all know Kate is NOT a person made of sunshine and rainbows, and doesn't even play one on TV, but she sure can fake it as her alter ego, Kateplusmy8.

I agree that Steve's company has a contract with TLC since he's also been spotted with Little People and Honey Boo Boo. Lucrative gig for him. I'm thinking delusional Kate thought he was hers exclusively. After all, his family came for the holidays! Oh, and his wife was a friend, too, she said. I think Gina inserted herself on the scene to stake her claim on her husband. She must have been getting vibes. I would have checked it out also.

This Irishfan person is sexually harassing Kate. Why doesn't she sic Bullyville on this tweeter?

TLC stinks said...

There are a bazillion published cookbooks plus recipes online. I think the whole point of her publishing a cookbook is the endgame...pushing for her own cooking show, filmed right in her kitchen, with 8 little helpers. She also sees it as an opportunity to make the rounds of the TV shows to hawk it and put her mug out there AGAIN. I don't think she believes she'll be rolling in dough (hee, hee) with the cookbook, just an opportunity to make publicity and to travel, on the publisher's dime, for book signings (with Steve) just like the good ol' days.

Absolutely agree. The market is bloated with cookbooks and Kate has no particular skill set that can help others learn how to cook and what's her point of view? How to cook for 10? Not a great need for that.
This to me, is just like her "8 Little Faces" book. Lots of pictures, little substance.

I saw that Frontline documentary, admin. It was very good, but very sad. IIRC, only the oldest son of one family went to college. And he used a lot of high interest (23-25%) credit card debt doing it. It seemed like they just kept becoming worse off, making less money, losing businesses and a house. The one woman that got foreclosed must have taken equity out of her house, like so many did. She said she lived in it for 24 years, but when they foreclosed she still owed $96,000. So sad.

I saw that and I did scratch my head over that. Why didn't he take out student loans instead of putting it on a credit card? With their income, he would have easily, EASILY qualified for government loans which back then would have rock bottom interest rates of 2-3% and would have almost certainly covered the entire tuition.

CelebDirtyLaundry new post takes pot shots at Kate:

Basically, the only reason she’s been in the media lately is because of controversy. Does that have anything to do with the recent trend of her tweets? Before, we used to get a lot of philosophical statements about life and fortune, and Kate’s sometimes sanctimonious judgment on random topics. Now, all we’ve gotten has been tweets about her children...

...Is this her new PR strategy? Tweet about her kids enough that people will forget about everything else? Or maybe she thinks that if she demonstrated how interesting her family is, they’ll be invited back on another reality show?...

...It’s not out of the ordinary, and at this point, she needs anything she can to keep her relevant. Her ex-husband has already faded into obscurity, and she can’t afford to let that happen to her. I assume most of her current income comes from residuals, but how long will that last? Probably not very long.

Allison, sorry about that. I let it through since it had aired on both coasts. The problem is these days with DVR people aren't always watching things until hours or days later. I am in the same boat, I hardly ever watch things when they air and often it's not until I have time days later. This week I didn't get around to watching Next Food Network Star until yesterday. But I know that if I watch something that late there's a chance I'll hear someone talking about it on the internet or out and about and sometimes it does get spoiled.

This^^^, I'm sure. She also calls it a "book", kind of a tip-off that she is looking at it more as a "regular" book than a cookbook. You rarely hear cookbook authors call their works "books" rather than a "cookbooks", from where I stand in the ordering/author interview world. I think she is angling to be her version of Pioneer Woman. (No comparison, though - PW already had her own thing going based on her own inherent skills.)

The fans are on Twitter claiming that the non-fans are ruining sales for Kate's cookbook. They just don't get it, do they? The audience for this book is very, very small. Only Kate's fans will buy it. They are buying multiple copies, apparently as many as they can afford, but the fact is, there are no more people to reach out to. If Kate has a small fan base, then this book is doomed.
Like it or not, the non-fans have not ruined Kate's career. TLC fired her because her ratings were low. Her ratings were low because people got sick of watching her be a shrew while going on endless trips with the kids. The non-fans didn't watch, but then again, nobody owes it to Kate to watch her show. She has to earn their viewership, and she didn't. Same for Twist of Kate. Non-fans don't owe Kate their money, which is why they're not buying/didn't buy her books or her cruise. That's left up to the fans, and if they can't pony up the cash, then that's their problem. Non-fans didn't cause Kate to be fired from CC or The Stir. She was fired because of lack of performance. She didn't/wouldn't do what she was hired to do, so she was fired.
Kate needs to get rid of this attitude of entitlement, and so do her fans. We don't owe her anything. I won't tweet or leave nasty messages or boycott companies she endorses, but I'm also not going to spend my money on anything just because her name is attached. She is not owed money or fame or a posh lifestyle on the backs of others. It's time now or her to work and provide for her family, just like the rest of us.
I wonder what will happen when the money does run out. Will she stoop to working a mediocre job and downsizing? Or will she try to get others to bail her out? I'm betting it will be the latter, but what kind of bailouts can she get? Her fans can't afford a cruise, so they certainly can't afford to pay off her house. She may get tuition assistance, but she's not entitled to free tuition (although that's what she'll try for). And the hair/nails/tanning? The lawn boys, the pool boy, the nannies, the maid? How will she grift for those? Will she go to the state and whine that it's not fair that she has 20+ acres and a pool, and she can't possibly be expected to take care of it all? I suppose time will tell.

========

Typically, no. I don't think this time she'll even get a room or flight paid for. And she'll be expected to earn her own keep by hawking those books. Her royalties on books sold will be her payment--at 10% of cover price.

So if you see your favorite author at a signing, do a mental estimate of how many books they're selling and multiply by 10% of cover price. You'll have a good idea of what they're taking home--usually not as much as you'd think. And publishers expect an author to willingly do their part to promote the book. (Fidos Mommy is right--it's not big bucks.)

I've done maybe 75 books signings (ones where I'm not a speaker), and they're hard work, can be dull and even demoralizing. And when you sit in an author pen (pun?) with a dozen or more other authors, it's even worse. Imagine that a prospective buyer walks up, and you're sitting there trying not to look desperate or eager or make them feel uncomfortable. Usually every other author is doing the same thing. Who will they choose? Then if they come up to you, you have to know how much info to give without seeming to pressure them. And be gracious if they walk away.

My worst book signing was an author event, two hours away, outside and hot as Hades even under a tent. The author to my left happened to have written a historical novel like mine and covering the same era. Every person who walked by, she'd holler, "Come on over! You will LOVE my book! It's a book about XXXX! What a page turner!" (I was so embarrassed.)

One hapless person came over to my table and picked up my book. Before I could even say hello, the other author leaned over and said, "These books are both on XXXX! They're a great read together! But READ MINE FIRST!" Hahaha, I can laugh now. That was the last author pen event I ever did.

Kate's fans may think it's glamorous, but the glamour wears off pretty quickly. Remember how freaked out Kate was by the signing Admin went to? Kate was used to BIG crowds and when few people show, nobody feels it as keenly as the author. However, unlike Kate, I've never hidden in a closet! Heeheehee.

My husband and I had a discussion about the Justin Carter case this morning which led to a discussion about "trolling" and threats on the Internet. I found this article fairly interesting:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23188875

I have a son who plays League of Legends and who talks with his friends over Skype as they play and the trash talking is pretty bad. We've talked to him about it because it really bothers us and he says this is how they play, they all know they don't mean it, they joke about it at school and tease each other the next day. When I talk to the other kids' parents they say the same thing - it bugs the heck out of them too the way their sons trash talk each other. We all wonder how it got like this because truly we don't remember it being this way when we were kids.

My son is a straight A, Eagle Scout. He is a good kid who is very respectful of others. He serves regularly in his community. It's only when he is playing games that are competitive that he and his friends trash talk to this extent - calling each other idiots or worse , yelling at each other for not doing certain things in the game, etc.

I've talked about it with our family therapist and she agrees it's a growing concern. It is part of the way boys relate to each other - teasing, joking around, etc. - but the Internet magnifies it.

It just got me thinking about the khaters and fans on twitter. When did common courtesy go out the window? Why is it okay to trash or troll someone online when you wouldn't do it to their face? Why do we need to be held accountable with the threat of a felony conviction or lawsuit, why can't we just say "Hey, I may not like that person or what they do but you know, I'm going to choose not to call them every name in the book and wish them evil not because society will hold me accountable but because I hold myself to a higher standard?"

Whatever happened to intrinsic motivation?

Sillimom - your post was very well said. I have a teenage son who is in most respects, a really terrific individual. He does well in school, does not get into trouble, doesn't back talk me, has a nice group of friends, and I have no complaints (well, except that he should pick up his socks instead of leaving them on the living room floor, and I wish he'd learn to cook a few things, and he's very grumpy when he gets tired lol).

But I've noticed the trash talking among friends as well, and I don't like it! He knows I don't care for it. But I get the same explanation - "Mom, this is just how kids talk these days. It doesn't mean anything!"

I don't know the answer. All I can do is provide a good example of the behavior I think is best. He knows there is a time and place for such trash talk, and he stays within those boundaries. I don't like it, but I don't see how I can prevent it from happening either.

Kids today don't understand that the language you use on the internet could come back to haunt them. Amen to that Layla. That was a great post, but that was my favorite sentence.

All these years, I've never figured out why she thinks the State of PA, or the world for that matter, OWE her because she and Jon decided to have 8 kids.

What happened to Kate's famous 'God will provide?' I guess He hasn't ordered any cookbooks?

Interesting that Kate was (possibly) meeting with her publisher a couple days ago (martinis in a fishbowl in the mid afternoon?), and now she is very interested in promoting her cookbook. Tweeting about it, adding sound bites for the media to pick up on (precious/beautiful touches), and now she's promising a post on her website about pre-ordering the book. Perhaps the publisher is pushing her to actually get off her bum and promote this, or they won't publish. This book is all Kate's got right now. She's determined to remain relevant, but she needs something to put out there. Right now, it's the book. How long has it been since she did a talk show/radio show? February, wasn't it? And even that wasn't much. 5 months is the longest she's gone without a camera in her face since J&K started. She's got to be very aware of that fact. She can't be happy about it.

Her statement of how it was so much fun to thank others seems so odd to me. It's so...superficial. No deep thoughts, so awareness of how she really feels about the contributions of others, the support of her fans, the love and support of her children. Just her usual "so much fun!". Carrie Ann had her pegged, all right.

With Kate posting pictures of kids when they were really little, it sounds like she's stuck in Peter Pan Syndrome. Geez.

If so, I admit this is so. I am ruining sales of the cookbook because I refuse to purchase that piece of junk.

So, my mother walks into a book store (work with me here). She is in her 70s, has never touched an internet connected device, would not watch reality TV if someone paid her. She goes to said bookstore to purchase cookbooks for her newly married granddaughters for Christmas. She's got some money to spend, too, if you can pry it out of her hands. My mother is smart, took care of and cooked for her cardiac impaired husband for 15 years, knows how busy working women can be... What exactly about Kate's recipes will convince my mother to lay down her hard earned social security check for that book? And how do the opinions on this blog influence the shopper in the cookbook section?

If the draw is farmhouse cooking for a big family, my mom is going to be turned off by the bleach blonde with neon teeth and a boob job on the cover of that book. Healthy recipes? Beans and cheese = not so much. Education on what cuts of meat work are cooked certain ways - if Katie has a clue about what that even MEANS, I'll apologize.

My point it, Kate is inept. At everything except bullying, screeching, flapping and being rude. She is even inept at knowing how inept she is. I cant think of how WE are harming her great media career opportunities. She does that herself everytime she lies, rolls her eyes, bellows ME ME ME! and sneers at everyone around her.

Virginia Pen Mom -- I've been to several book signings, for authors like Ed McBain, Carolyn Hart, and Anne McCaffrey. You don't get many bigger names than McBain and McCaffrey. Each time I was the ONLY person there for an extended period of time. I wound up talking with Carolyn Hart for nearly 20 minutes, about books of course, before anyone else showed up. With Ed McBain, it was probably 15 minutes. They were both very gracious and friendly and kept the conversation going. Each time I felt like I should wind it up and leave, they'd ask me another question, usually along the lines of "Have you read ___ ___ ?" or "What do you think of __ __ ?" Ms. McCaffrey was very gracious, but she was elderly, not feeling well, and so didn't engage much other than to say "Thank you" and answer a question I asked about one of her characters. At the time, I thought they were just being nice, but maybe I seemed like a lifeline to them? Somehow, I can't see KK being friendly and gracious to a stranger who comes up to her at a book signing. Under the same circumstances, she'd go hide in a closet again.

Lol! Or in computers, or in the creative field (both of which I am in)...or factory work, or medicine, or education, or...

There have actually been studies that suggest that letting of a few f-bombs in stressful situations (such as childbirth!) actually do wonders for your emotional state...releases dopamine or some similar hormones.

If my kid was "trash talking" in an online game but not in "real life", I honestly wouldn't see it as much of a problem. A game is a structured area in which to vent, and really it's just posturing to begin with. I've said before that I started swearing at a very young age and that I learned it from my (professional, highly-educated) parents- but I was also taught that they were words to say around the family and some adult friends, not on the playground. If someone *knows* swearing bothers another person and does it anyway- well, that doesn't have anything to do with the actual words, that person is just a jerk.

What really gets me about "your employer will find everything you say on Facebook" is not that it isn't often true, but that people still put things on FB, under their real names, KNOWING that it can be searched. I have a FB profile and don't edit myself too much on it, but for heaven's sake, I don't use my real name!

Children First said...

OT!

I don't know. It must be me, and I'm getting old. I just got my university magazine in the mail, and I always look at the class notes. Under birth, seven of the newborn boys were named Ryder. Is this a new "pop" name? I thought about Gypsi, Kate's fan, who named her new baby Ryderson, but at two weeks old, is calling him Ryder. If you're going to call him Ryder, why not just name him Ryder?

When we named our children, we stuck with the girls' names so you knew that they were girls, there was only one way to spell them, and you couldn't make a nickname out of them. Same with the boys.

My friend, who is expecting, said there was someone whose last name was Kaust (pronounced Cost), and she was determined to name her daughter Holly. Why do that to a child?

Of course, when I was a kid, there was someone in my school whose last name was Heiney (bad enough), but her parents named her Iva.

Yes, and the reason there were quite a few watching her show was because Kate did not present herself to be a nice person. Viewers tuned into see what she was going to do next, how nasty she could be, rubbernecking at a car accident.

However, with a cookbook, only her fans are going to buy it so they can slobber over pictures of her and the kids. There's no "live" action there in which she's berating Jon or slapping Emeril...nothing to make anyone, other than the fans, even want to buy it. There's no draw as there was in the television show.

Except, of course, for Milo, who will sleep with eight copies of the book under her pillow.

In fact, someone from AUS the other day commented on the RV episode something along the lines of not good behavior. I really hope someone has proofread Kate's recipes and tested them. Some of the recipes in the "new" book were in IJWYTK. I looked at the Pizza Meatball recipe. This is a list of ingredients:

Memorable Pizza Meatballs
2 lbs ground beef
2 cups seasoned bread crumbs
1 cup milk
½ cup onion, finely chopped
2 teaspoons pepper
1 bloc (8 oz) mozzarella cheese
1/3 cup flour
1/4 cup oil
50 oz. pizza sauce (Kate’s favorite is Don Pepino)

In the directions, she says "Combine first 6 ingredients just until mixed and shape into meatballs." Notice that mozzarella is ingredient #6.

Then the next direction is "Cut mozzarella cheese into cubes and put one into the center of each meatball".

But, but, but...the mozzarella was already combined with the other first 5 ingredients. What do I do now?

If this book does come out, I can just see the tweeties asking her questions about the recipes.

I see problems already with that recipe even as a layman. The ground beef doesn't have a lick of salt or in the alternative some kind of flavoring salt substitute like herbs or garlic. Carazee, I am sorry that you were hurt and are having to have surgery Monday. I will pray for you.

I feel for you having to be stuck in bed for 3 months. I know it so well. I am a pro. I am so glad you have a good support system to help you.

Tips: get Skype. Skype has been a God send for me so I can see my grandson. I have not been able to see him for a visit, yet, but it will be in the next 2 weeks. He will be 3 months before I see him. And some really good books, music, Suduko puzzles. I love Suduko, the harder to figure out, the better!

The first Nhome I was in back in `06, I was there for 8 months. I never got a shower there once while I was there. My hair maybe 6 times by hand. The CNA's were so cruel. State wouldn't do anything. Four hours away from family and all I had was Suduko books, a telephone, a tv, and a hand held Yatzee game. Only a few people came to see me because of the distance, but if someone had to go to the big University only a couple of miles away, they would come and see me.

I am so grateful God got me out of that pit. But, there were some good things that happened there. A upscale nephrologist came to see me, who the Nhome said would never show up. He took my case and he kept coming back to check on me. The Nhome kept asking me, who do you know? Why is he coming here? Like I was trash. I said, There is a wonderful man that sent him. WHO? WHO? God did! They turn and ran like scalded jerks. Found the best neurosurgeon in the Southeast to do my surgery to get prepared for dialysis. It was a last ditch effort.

They were shocked and awed because of how wonderful I did. Then when the time came to start dialysis, I was ready.

I knew it was God had planned every thing down to the very first day that I rolled into the clinic, a lady who worked there was standing there and as I was going by, she said my name and I said hers and she and I grabbed each other and we cried a river. She was my maid of honor at my wedding! I hadn't seen her in years!

How comforting in a unknown situation that I was facing.

I don't know, I personally haven't seen that. Maybe that's true for some people. Some of the smartest, most successful, and nicest people I know curse like sailors. And some don't curse at all or very little. I don't see a clear pattern in my life.

I should add though, I'm talking about people who say the f-ing quarterly reports. Not people who are saying at people f-you you suck.

People who say f-you or throw around the C, B or other words AT people, instead of more abstractly at situations themselves or inanimate objects, usually don't work out.

Milo is drooling over this. Why would a normal adult woman get so excited over a book showing pictures of another woman and her children? She's really weird.

&&&

I don't think her intentions are anything but innocent and to suck up to Kate, however, she is one who frequently throws around the nasty and libelous "pedo" name at the non-fans, which is so out of line and inappropriate.

And this is the same woman who is drooling all over eight kids she's never even met? Really? Really? Isn't pedo really more apt for someone drooling like she is?

I personally do not think Jon Gosselin would ever subject his children or his person to the DWTS. Never ever. He has class. He now has discerment. He has grown. He loves his children more than (fill in the blanks}. Yup, Jon Gossenin, my HERO.

Kids today don't understand that the language you use on the internet

&&&

I agree they need to be aware about the permanency of the internet, which most aren't, but I thought she said this was spoken nasty language through those headphone thingies gamers use, or am I misunderstanding this.

It's not written down, it's not forever. It's not something an employer can see. It's no different than a phone call, or two truckers on a CB radio. You say it, but it disappears right then, never to be saved. No employer can "find" it and not hire the kid later on.

The (((hugs))) that the sheeple tweet is really annoying. I wonder if they think it's cute. I'm not so sure that Kate would really enjoy being (((hugged))) by any of them.

Kate is a twit thanks for finding that little couple link for me. Jen is blogging so much (and so well) these days I couldn't even find the right blog it was on!

I never said my son swears at his friends. Actually, my kids don't really swear all that much. Occasionally if something breaks or spills or they get hurt (stub their toe, etc.). I've always taught them that they are smart kids and they can think of better words to express themselves then swear words and it seems to have taken for the most part.

No, my complaint is how he and his friends talk to each other. Again, like I said, it's on the lines of yelling at each other when someone makes a mistake in the game, calling each other stupid or idiot, etc.

Have you not heard of youtube? Lots of kids post their gaming vids or their 'sick' (good LOL) moves on youtube videos and on gaming sites. WITH THE AUDIO.

I find that a poor excuse. "Oh, that's ok, you go ahead and call someone a Fa**** or c*** , just don't type it out." The heck?

That's different. Then that would be permanent. It wasn't an excuse I was merely stating the facts. If it were a simple CB radio type conversation, no, an employer couldn't find it. Moreover, handles are usually used, not real names.

There are obviously many other aspects of a teen's life an employer could look into, though honestly, few check at that age. It's a job at the local eatery and most know how teens are. It's not the CIA. :) However I do agree it's a good idea to start getting them used to the idea that their life could be checked on at some point by employers, even if it's not in high school.

New post on Steve!

Thanks Kate is a twit. Thought I'd document his new job.

Speaking of teens and the internet:

"Casey Snook, a 14-year-old girl from England, unknowingly racked up a $6,000 phone bill by uploading photos to Facebook while on vacation in New York City, according to a story published Friday in the New York Post.

During the five-day trip with her mother, Kate Snook, Casey snapped photos of the Empire State Building, Times Square, Grand Central Station, and Central Park. Eager to share her travels with her friends, she uploaded the photos to Facebook. But since Casey hadn’t blocked her “data roaming” function, all that time spent on the Internet added up."

Ouch!

I'd rather see a teen cursing as opposed to on drugs or getting some pregnant.

Where did that come from? Like attracts like. If you speak like a trashcan in life you attract the same. I do agree that calling someone names vs. just saying it are 2 different things. But using language like that when by yourself leads into 'slipping' and using it in public. But that's just me.

What in the world? By all means, provide the research showing that teens who swear are more likely to be on drugs and pregnant or parenting.

The Administrator is right. There is a world of difference between swearing and swearing AT someone.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

IT's True, don't you know swearing is the gateway drug. :)

LIke I said I've just seen far too many examples of highly successful, kind, generous people who can curse like a sailor to believe there is some problem. The studies even talk about how it's an evolutionary response to sudden surprise, danger or pain, like a cat hissing. It's in our nature lol!

It sounds like Silimom's kid is otherwise a great kid who doesn't cause her trouble. I'm sure he'll be fine. He may even wake up one day and decide not to say those words anymore.

If it doesn't bother you, then fine, no problem. But if you find it offensive and would rather not hear it, then out of respect for the other person, you don't do it. Problem is, though, when it becomes a part of one's established language, can that person really turn it on and off?

Re: Kate posting photos of the kids and referring to them as "my babies".

Of course. I think she's doing it intentionally and mentioning and linking to the cookbook because she is hoping to 'mist' the fans and potential buyers into remembering the kids as they were on tv - little and cute - not as the average looking elementary school aged kids they are now. Little and cute sells, average doesn't. This book will be another picture book, except this one hawked as a 'cookbook' hoping to draw from a greater pool of (unsuspecting and/or naive) buyers.

As for her not remembering where/when the pics were taken - they are obviously digital photos and she's just downloading the files so the date has to be available. But, how incredibly unappreciative and elitist thinking she is to have taken so many trips that meant so little and became so common that she can't remember where they were taken - let alone have any meaningful discussion with the kids about their experiences. I shudder to think that the kids have such vague memories and have placed the same blase value that their mother has on the fantastic opportunities the show provided them. Shameful and sad.

Suze, I thought the comment about how she THINKS they were at a Taylor Swift concert to be particularly insensitive.

Most concerts these days charge an arm and a leg. Many people are lucky to take their kids to such a thing once in a lifetime if ever, much less many times as she has. It's nice that the biggest problems the 1% have are remembering whether you were at some 100 buck a head plus backstage passes Taylor Swift concert or not. Which reminds me, Taylor Swift and her mom were another "bestie" of Kate's that really never were. Once again the way she defines friendships and the way other people see the encounter are grossly distant from each other.
