Baby Jessica's dad: 'I’m very glad that I don’t have to look at my daughter and say “Sorry, your money is gone!”'

In an exclusive interview with Realitytvkids.com, Chip McClure talks about fame, the tragic suicide of one of the rescuers, his unquenchable faith, and how he made sure his daughter, and her money, were protected.

Chip says he was a teenager "shy to the point of being incapacitated"
when he had to give a national press conference during Jessica's ordeal.
Last week we were pleasantly surprised to find an e-mail from Chip McClure in our inbox. Chip is the father of the famous baby who fell down a Midland, Texas well in 1987 and was miraculously pulled out alive three days later. He was only 18 years old when the accident happened. Today he continues to live in Texas and sells airplanes. Chip reached out to us to thank us for an article we wrote a few years ago talking about what a good job he and Jessica's mom, 17-year-old Cissy, did protecting Jessica from fame and safeguarding her money. On a whim, we asked if Chip would be willing to be interviewed about his experience in the spotlight and raising a famous child, especially now that he has the benefit of 25 years of hindsight. Much to our delight, he agreed. Thank you, Chip, and thank you for being a shining example of what a good parent really is under incredible circumstances.

Everybody's Baby: The Rescue of Jessica McClure can be found on Netflix streaming, Amazon and Youtube.

Realitytvkids.com: The coverage of baby Jessica was one of America's first pseudo "reality" shows. At what point did you become aware of how big the story was and how famous your daughter was, and what was that realization like?
Chip: I was standing in Jessica’s hospital room the night we got her out. It was a surreal moment, it had been so intense. We were so focused on getting her back alive that we didn’t really give any thought to what it would be like when it was over. So, here the three of us are, Jessica is lying in her bed, Cissy lying beside her. I’m standing there with my hands in my pocket. Relief setting in and the adrenaline wearing off. I did what anyone would do, I turned on the T.V. There just happened to be a story about Jessica. Well, that’s cool, I remember thinking. This is on T.V! So, I changed the channel. Much to my surprise she was on that channel too. Fifty-seven channels and there’s nothing on except Jessica’s rescue. That’s when I first knew how big the story was.

It's well known that donations poured in for Jessica, some reports estimating about a million dollars all together. What did you do with the money?
The money was set up in a trust fund for Jessica, it provided for her necessities and education as she grew up. When she turned 25 years old the money was released to her control. We did use a portion of the funds to buy a modest home in the Midland, but these were funds that were either cash or sent directly to Cissy and I. For example, there would be numerous checks that were made out to us and the memo line would be “Dinner on us!” Because these funds were not sent to Jessica directly, they could not be deposited into the trust. It was a typical trust that was managed by a bank in Midland. We received monthly documentation of how it was managed and invested but the bank handled the details.

Did you ever feel temptations to dip into Jessica's money?
There really weren’t temptations, the intent from the beginning was that it be for Jessica. There were times when it would have been tempting to use the money to fund a project or a business venture, but a trust does not have provisions for that. The best thing you can do with money in a situation is to leave it alone, let it grow to a substantial amount so that it can truly provide for the beneficiary.

You only allowed the media to update the public on Jessica two times as she grew up. Why did you decide to limit her access to the public so severely?
We kept her out of the spotlight so that she would have the opportunity for a normal life. Once she was old enough to decide what she wanted to do she decided to keep it to a minimum. She really likes just being a normal girl. She likes knowing that people like her as a person and not just because she is a notable figure.

You and Jessica's mom were just 18 and 17 years old when this happened. Do you think being so young helped you or hurt you in being able to handle your lives becoming such an enormous public spectacle?
The truth is that it was an extreme disadvantage. Not only were we so very young, but I was shy to the point of being incapacitated. I had just accepted a job with a retail sporting goods store and the owner wasn’t sure it was going to work out because I was too shy to deal with the public. What did help, what saved us from certain embarrassment, was the fact that we were surrounded by very good people that protected us and helped us handle the situation and publicity. It still amazes me the people that God had placed in my life, in advance, who would be there for us at a time when we needed them most. The most notable is a man that is a life-long friend, in fact he has known me my whole life. He was involved in politics with my father. My family doesn’t have “god parents” but if they did Darrell Smith would be my godfather. Darrell came in and handled everything, he became our attorney and mentor. He called in a favor from Texas State Senator Pete Snelson, to handle public relations for us. Darrell assisted with the trust that was set up and the subsequent movie deal. I truly do not know what we would have done without him.

When did you explain to Jessica what happened to her and the large amount of money waiting in trust for her? One report says she actually found out not through you but by watching Rescue 911.

That report is actually false. Jessica grew up knowing about her trust and being invol
Jessica and her family in 2012.

ved in the media decisions. Statements like that make good T.V. and help to promote other shows. I’m sure it originated with a comment, but was taken out of context. It’s like saying when did you set the kids down and tell them daddy is the president. The kids don’t have to be told, they just grow up with it. It’s all about how it is lived, the attitude of the parents. With Jessica we never made it a big deal, so it wasn’t a big deal. This allowed her to have a good attitude about life and her position in it.

All reports suggest Jessica and your family has dealt with what happened to her very well. Why in your opinion has your family not become another casualty of fame?
The short answer is the grace of God. Any time you are thrust into the spotlight things can go very poorly. It really depends on your heart and your attitude. If you feel thankful for the love and attention, people will see that. If you thrive on the fame and attention, they’ll see that too. I am very thankful that all went well, the glory goes to God though. We were too young and naïve to make it through this good.

Fireman Robert O'Donell helped pull Jessica
from the well. He later committed suicide.
For Robert, fame was "like a drug," Chip says.
Unfortunately, one of Jessica's rescuers was not able to handle the publicity very well and in 1995, just days after the Oklahoma City bombing, he committed suicide. What are your thoughts on that?
Robert was a friend, and I was deeply disturbed by how the media spotlight affected him. One night we were at a party and he told a young lady that he was "the guy who rescued Baby Jessica.” Her response was; “Yeah, you and 400 other people!” Let’s just say that Robert didn’t shy from the attention, he lived for it. It was like a drug that he would have been better off not being introduced to. A few years after the incident, the media attention abruptly stopped. I was relieved; Robert was despondent. He had many other issues that are private matters that I won’t go into. These things were a more relevant and current concern at his time of death, and in my opinion were much greater factors in his fatal decisions that day. Though, we will never really know what was going through his mind at the time.

Do you regret any decisions you made in regards to all of this? Is there anything you would have done differently or better?
I’m sure we would all do things different giving the opportunity and retaining our current knowledge and maturity, but again considering our age and circumstances I think we were very blessed to have everything go the way that it did.

You and Jessica's mom eventually divorced. Did anything about being in the public eye contribute to that break-up?
It didn’t contribute to the break-up, it probably extended the marriage. The fact is we were both children when we met. We were not in love. I wish this had been a storybook in that sense, but it wasn’t. The good news is God’s grace is sufficient, and as bad as we mess things up He has a way of making the best out of it. As far as co-parenting, you have to place the child(ren) above your own feelings. You have to make them the priority and not pawns in a war between ex-spouses.

What are your thoughts on parents who put their children in the public eye? What is your advice to them?
It’s a scary way to make a life for yourself and your children. I do believe that if your intentions are good and you keep God at the center of everything that you do it can be great. If you are selfish, greedy and looking for fame, it’s going to be a tough life. For you and your children.

Do you have any words of caution to parents who are choosing to spend their children's money now instead of protecting it?
Resentment from your children is a painful thing. I’m very glad that I don’t have to look at my daughter and say; “Sorry, your money is gone!”

Reality shows weren't very popular in 1987, but had you been offered a reality show would you have signed on?
No. The idea has been bantered around over the last few years, it’s not something Jessica wants to do.

What was the worst part about the family being famous, and conversely, what did you like about it?
The worst part is that you do attract some unhealthy attention. For every thousand people that truly love and care about your family, there’ll be one who is a little off. This can be scary and dangerous. Any famous family has the opportunity to do wonderful things and touch people’s lives, they just have to want to do that.

Have you ever seen "Jon and Kate Plus 8" and what are you thoughts about the pervasive invasion of the children's privacy on such an on-going basis?
I haven’t watched the show more than a few minutes, so I probably don’t have enough information to comment. It’s probably not healthy and the sad part is the kids didn’t get to choose.

Any thoughts on parents who "over share" about their children on sites like Facebook and Twitter?
I have both a Twitter account and a Facebook page, I started both fairly recently as I begin to consider writing a book. The Facebook page has really been a source for excellent feedback and encouragement. I do say very little about Jessica or her family on Facebook. The page is www.facebook.com/atimetopray.

Amy and Chip today.

Could you give us an update on how the family is doing now?
Our entire family is blessed. Jessica, Danny and the kids are doing great. I am now finally married to the love of my life. My wife Amy is an amazing woman. We have six kids between us, a regular Brady Bunch. I sell airplanes for a living at www.ridgeaire.com and as I mentioned before have been kicking around the idea of writing a book about the inspiring story of Jessica’s rescue.

My main purpose is to encourage people to pray and get involved. Jessica was rescued because 400 people showed up and worked with all of their ability. Her rescue was successful because the whole nation prayed together for her. Imagine what we could accomplish today if we all prayed, and became involved. Thanks for the opportunity to share.

It takes very little money and tech skills to post video on your blog

I've always thought that if Kate did start posting video of her and the kids, it would ruin her chances of a network wanting to put her back on TV. Why bother if she is already doing it herself. There is no surprise left. People would see the kids grow up in front of their very own eyes on a regular basis. The "I wonder what they are up to now" factor would be lost. Kate would not want to spoil any chance of her getting the kids and herself back in front of the cameras. It is much more profitable/marketable for her having a yearly update show provided someone wants to pick up the story and pay her.

In her blog on her site, she says that she has 40-50 hens. With all that manure, I would be in heaven with a big garden, because, after all, she's all about organic. She claims to give a lot of the eggs away (that I don't believe).

Okay- I will admit it- I like Celebrity Apprentice. Completely enjoyed the finale last night. Am glad Trace Adkins won, although enjoyed his competitor.

As for Kate as a contender on CA- she would be one of their loose ends who has little to offer-think Dennis Rodman. She has no celebrity contacts for donations. She also acted like an a** around Donald Trump, by ruffling his hair for a photo. Never mind how lazy and difficult she was to work with on DWTS.

I honestly think Donald Trump is aware of how she is perceived, and she may very well be black balled from the competition. There are so many more unselfish candidates, who are actually working with charities now and on ongoing basis. Kate has no charity other than herself and her freebies.

Not seeing her being on CA, but if she is, will need to stop watching the show. She has never endorsed any charity other than herself. CWS and RC- Huge fail as she made it all about herself, as usual. There are too many worthy contenders for this show. So IF, big IF, they bring her on CA, the show will gain nada, as there are not too many people who care about her one way or the other.

I have a question about Twitter. I don't have an account, but I was wondering about DMing. In order for someone to DM, do both tweeters have to be following each other? If so, then Milo and Kate can DM because Kate is following MIlo, but can Irish fan DM Kate? Kate claims that she can't see DMs so she had said to e-mail her at her website. Why couldn't she DM if she and another person are following each other?

I'm no expert on hacking, or faking another's identity online, but as to Amy and Samy's claims that their FB page was hacked, and things were posted under false pretenses -- I don't believe them for a minute.

Look at the facts as we know them:
1. Amy will refuse to listen to any criticism, or what she perceives as even the slightest questioning of her cooking, her orders, her decisions. She simply will not hear anything negative about herself. We saw how she responded to Gordon Ramsey - a man you would think she would respect, because of his reputation and success in the restaurant (and television) industry. Instead, she was rude to him, flippant, refused to listen, and literally walked away and went home rather than hear some truths about her cooking, and her behavior.

2. Samy - he steals tips from his waitstaff. He won't let anyone else use the cash register (I find that highly suspicious of something fishy going on with the books). He got into a verbal, then pushing shoving match with a male customer, because he wanted the man to pay for a dinner that he never received! The man waited over an hour then said, "I'm leaving" and Samy nearly came to blows with him. He also got in Gordon Ramsey's face. He's a thug.

3. They go through employees like nobody's business. I think it's more likely that they would not allow any employee to know their FB password. They are not trusting people.

For those reasons, and because the rants sounded like things Amy and Samy would say - I don't believe they were hacked. I think they lashed out, because they are not rational people. They went on a little FB rampage without thinking of the consequences. Just as they signed up for Kitchen Nightmares without thinking of the obvious consequences.

But if there were a real investigation, then authorities could determine the origin of those FB posts. In fact, if you try to log onto your FB page from an unrecognized source, FB asks you to confirm that it's okay. I tried to log on when on vacation from a hotel computer - and had to answer a security question before I could get on.

Tipped Off said:
Quite frankly, anytime management/owners are sticking their hands in employee tips it's suspicious. "Tipping out" the other employees that support a server is a transaction between the employees and none of management's business. They can make guidelines as to what percentage to give, they can mediate disputes if someone feels they are being slighted, but for management to physically handle the money to split it up is unnecessary and shady.
********
Exactly. Management/restaurant owners should never have their hands on any tip money - unless they were the ones personally waiting on a table from start to finish. A customer gives a tip in the good faith that it will go to their server. They consider the money they paid for their meal to be money that goes to the owner, with a built-in profit margin.

By the way, I think all servers should make at least the minimum wage, with none of these shenanigans about paying them $2.00 or $3.00 under minimum wage because they earn tips. That's bullshit, pardon my language.

It's only May. Why would a couple weeks of push back in September make a difference now? How could they gauge it that precisely this far in advance? And if they can gauge it this far in advance why couldn't they come up with an accurate release date when it first came out in the first place? This whole thing makes little sense to me.

I would so be looking forward to seeing kate on Celebrity
Apprentice, just to add lots of comedy to the show, between all of the arguing between the players. We all need a good belly-laugh or two, and if kate was on the show, we could shriek and holler every week! And I doubt the Donald would allow the 8 to be part of his show, I don't recall anyone else ever involving their children on the show. I think it would be very funny, she would not be able to contribute much to any charity she would all of a sudden decide to support. But for that reason alone, I don't see it ever happening. Too bad, because Milo and the other few would be coming up with so many reasons and excuses why kate can't raise much money, it would be all about the 'haters' preventing her from doing so, for one dumb reason or other, and they sure don't have the money to contribute. But a 'hater' can dream, can't they?

Yes, it's a crazy world with lots of twists and turns. I've been at this for years and still struggle to figure it all out.

My first book required a 3-month lead time (from the time I committed to a print quantity to having books in hand). It was a simple print job, black and white, no color except the cover, etc. I do have a faster way to get books now, but that's by going directly to a printer, no middle man.

It's possible with a color book HCI needs a 4-month lead time. I think HCI is getting their ducks in a row to determine how many to print. It's possible Kate and/or HCI saw that the price per book was going to be lots higher than expected (due to small print run). And so either she begged for more time or they said, "Here's an extension. Push the dang book!"

Personally, I'm enjoying watching this unfold. As the nurse said a few weeks ago, when you work hard at a profession (in my case, writer), it's annoying to see Kate parade around like "a New York bestselling author" when she didn't even write the first book!

She probably doesn't have time for them. Being an army general is demanding work, what with having to contend with the strategy of assembling troops, scoping out the geographical locations, and calling them to battle. With all of that exhausting work, however, she still has time to look in Kate's windows to see what's cookin for supper!

I think it's hysterical to see Milo making excuses for the media and public being done with Kate. Her latest is that Kate is "under the radar." According to Milo, she flew under the radar at the Derby, and now she's under the radar because Milo has no idea what she's up to.

I wonder if Milo sits at home trying to figure out how to spin all of this so it looks like Kate really is still relevant, or if Kate directs her on how to promote her latest ventures. Either way, it's not working. They both need a new strategy. This "radar" thing that Milo is putting forth is laughable, and I find it hard to believe that even she believes it. The desperation is palpable.

I grew up in suburbs of Dayton Ohio. When I was 8 an F-5 tornado flattened a nearby town. Flattened it. We drove through it afterwords..I remember a house with only the nursery standing with a teddy bear on the dresser. "Refugees" moved in next door to us...they kept to themselves. I'll never forget that day. It was a beautiful April day and we were playing outside and a neighbor ran out yelling for everyone to get inside. Our neighborhood was ranch houses without basements...one house had a tornado shelter. All the men got on the roofs to look for the tornado. We were huddled in the bathtub with a mattress over us...

@msgoody2shoes21: @Kateplusmy8 You should get your agent to put you in commercials. Good money in that and you still get to be at home with your children
========
I guess goody doesn't realize that likeable people are normally hired to be in commercials because the sponsors want to actually sell their product. Their demographics are not the few fans hat Kate has left. The iron is no longer hot and neither is Kate.

My thoughts nd prayers are with all those in OK.

I don't know Mom didn't deny it like KK didn't.

She won't even get on the stand to defend her daughter so her life could be spared.

I think it's good her mom isn't trying to help her. She is her daughter, but she's a cold blooded murderer. That's definitely crossing the line into enabling.

My house in Louisville KY was destroyed the same day. We lived in the Northfield subdivision which was hit really hard. Our next door neighbor died. Gas was leaking from our house's gas line. It was a horrible day for people in the wake of 100 tornadoes that day.

local -- I know your tornado. I went through the town of Monticello, IN on the same day. There is a book written about what it did to that down. Our family farm is 20 miles from Monticello.

I was in the detached garage feeding our new litter of collie pups. I saw an apple tree yanked out the ground and thrown into the side of the building. It happened so fast that I don't think I had time to be afraid. What I really remember is how loud it was.

Later, we heard about the people who had died in Monticello.

I think there are two kinds of people, those who enable their loved ones and those who don't. I think enabling is usually the easier, cowardly way to deal with your problems and ultimately almost always a bad thing. I see the sheeple as usually more enablers than not.

Wow, I just got home from being away all day and am catching up on the news. The loss of lives and destruction is mind-boggling yet again.

I didn't live in the area of Ohio where the Xenia tornado hit, but I do remember that day very clearly although I was very young. I distinctly recall standing at a bedroom window in our house with my mom, looking to the north at the unbelievable blackness of the sky - I can still see it in my mind, never seen anything since - with the sun shining brightly at our backs. And my mom acting very strangely. I was just little but remember it like yesterday, and I developed a huge fear of storms for a long time afterward. Prayers with those families today.

I see Milo is trying to prompt K8 to respond to her by using storm tweets, or trying to get K8 to respond somehow so it looks like she cares about the day in a PR fashion. I'm sure K8 does care, really, but the Milo prompts are so annoying.

Milo's only hope for a response by Kate is to keep hawking the cookbook. Whether or not Milo is capable of seeing that plugging the book is the only thing that works for her is anyone's guess. She should have figured it out by now.

Ha, word is Kitchen Nightmares sent Amy's Bakery some kind of cease and desist stopping their press conference tomorrow. Hysterical.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Casey's mom is even worse because she actually took her daughter's side over her own grandchild. They just let Casey come up with some ridiculous story that her own father killed her. They knew that was absurd. But if it were get her off, sure go for it? As far as I'm concerned they are directly responsible, in part, for why she got off.

If the Donald was going to put KK on CA he would've done it when he met.

Her years ago while she was hot while she was doing DWTS & K+8 and interviews.

The Donald got better things to do than hire a washed up reality mom with no talent.

No sorry Melissa! Not currently! They were talking about a big tornado in the 70's, I believe. I had never heard of it before.

Kate is represented by Julie Carson May at Media Motion:
http://mediamotionintl.com/

Funny though...her bio doesn't seem to be updated, and her new "cookbook" isn't even included on her list of "best selling books".

Also interesting is the fact Kate's bio picture is a picture of her and the kids from Kate plus 8 show. The link on her bio takes you to TLC website.

So I wonder, who exactly is Julie Carson May representing? Kate? or TLC?

You scared me! I thought another one hit. I know there are still warnings in parts of Oklahoma, but I didn't think Ohio had been in the path.

Is Julie Carson May really just her MANAGER or is she actually her agent? There's quite a big difference.

I think she's just her manager.
