Kate to release cookbook in September

'Love Is in the Mix' features the children prominently on the cover and several of the recipes are named after the kids.

Per our long-standing policy, Realitytvkids.com

blurs the children's faces in current photos.
According to Amazon.com, the book will feature "family-friendly" meals including:
  • Very Sloppy "Joels"
  • Leah's Favorite Spaghetti Sauce
  • Collin's Thomas Hummus
  • Cara and Mady's Crock Pot Pulled Pork
  • Aunt Helen's Lemon Squares
  • Kate's Basic Bread (Maker) Recipe
  • Edible Dough for Play
  • Carlos's chicken tacos. (Tee-hee--kidding, kidding!)

I dislike how she uses her kids to make a statement about editing--it's all the editing's fault. The nails were not "editing" they were special effects. There's a difference. You can't edit IN bad behavior.

And another point, if she were such a big producer why did she allow all this terrible editing to happen in the first place? Where's her self respect?

Sleepless WOW that blog post is spot on!!

And it provides real examples of how when you behave like a normal person and just ignore it, it's not so bad. When you decide to play tit for tat like Kate and Jill have all it does is just implode on you.

Great analysis, here's a part I really agree with:

So, here’s our advice to reality celebs who become victims…

Never, ever, ever attack or block “hate” bloggers or non-fans because it fuels the fire. Instead, make nicey-nice to the bloggers. Reach out to them and build a relationship. It’s difficult to attack a “friend”, even it it’s a twitter or FB friend. If you treat bloggers as writers who want to do a story on you, throw them a bone and you’ll likely get a positive spin. The results will astound you!

Lisa Vanderpump, Camille Grammer, Cat Ommanney (to name a few) are examples of reality celebs who use this strategy.

It makes sense, doesn’t it?

The problem is that an extreme narcissist is never smart enough to look outside of themselves to recognise this strategy as being a more affective one. Instead, they block, they attack and we succeed in getting their goats, which is a huge paycheck for us.

I wonder if the child she says was bullied was teased for being on T.V. or because of his mother.

Even Lindsay Lohan admitted when she came back to school after Parent Trap it was difficult. When KIDS hate it often IS jealousy. This is not some arts school in NYC where every kid has at least done a commercial, this is a real anomaly to be on T.V. in PA. Mady even admitted most, though not all, kids were cool with it. I.e. there were some kids NOT cool with it.

Missy Francis also talks about kids picking on her for being on T.V. It was especially embarrassing when she made a movie about incest.

I was going to do an April Fool's post with Carlos photoshopped into the cookbook. It woulda been great too.

Two reasons I didn't--first and foremost I just had too much going on this weekend with Easter and everything to spare for it. But secondly after Kate's shenanigans today it's almost like she doesn't deserve a funny photoshop. I just don't have the willpower. Sorry! I'm sure I can fit in it somewhere in the future, perhaps when the book comes out.

Let's discuss Kind Hearted Woman instead if you are so inclined, I think it will be a much better use of our energy! :) I will have a post ready before it airs tomorrow. Reminder again to check your local listenings because it varies.

Admin - I don't think that it was one of Kate's kids that was bullied I think it was Barb's son. She'd been tweeting to Kate about it. I think Kate just added her comment to the tweet.

Our grandmothers used to say that you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. I guess that still holds true today. I thought that blog post was excellent. It's too bad that Kate has nobody who could give her that advice. She just doesn't understand that the more she protests, attacks and calls on the bullies to take people down, the worse she is going to make it. You can see that, I can see that, and so can countless others. What is it about Kate that prevents HER from seeing that? Is it because she is so emotionally stunted that she's still stuck in that middle school mentality where she hasn't matured enough to figure out for herself how to handle those who don't agree with her?

Kate Gosselin@BarbGilmer @BullyVille that's my best advice. The parent I called had NO idea &actually made her son get on phone& apologize-->impressive!

I wonder when Kate's two children were bullying others at school if she made her two kids get on the phone and call and apologize to all of those that they were bullying? Hell no, is the answer to that.

Frankly, after Kate's shenanigans today, what she deserves is no attention at all. Her life is like a carwreck on the other side of the road; you hate yourself and everyone else for slowing down to watch. And yet you continue to do it every time. Like a recalcitrant toddler, she needs a time-out.

It's very true. Kate wants to play victim but doesn't do a good job seeming sympathetic. If that's how she wanted to play it she should have saw to it she was never the one on attack, that she was always sweet and innocent and they were attacking her. This is why many seemingly nasty celebs have been very successful minimizing their haters. They feel bad attacking someone who is nothing but kind, and it's not as fun for them when the object of their hate is simple retweeting their hate or just overall being nice back. Probably like deflating a balloon.

For him to remain silent while bullyville and KK tweeted their love-fest with each other, when Robert KNOWS what she did, would in my opinion, be doing the Gosselin children a disservice.

I noticed you are talking about Robert. What about Jon? He KNOWS what she did so is Jon doing a disservice to the Gosselin children by remaining silent, too?

I am catching up after being out of touch since the end of February. My husband and I are touring Australia and New Zealand, but couldn't
resist checking in today.

Being on holiday, I have discovered a great author (Gillian Flynn) and have read her first two novels, Sharp Objects and Dark Places. I look forward to her current book Gone Girl. In Sharp Objects, the protagonist describes her mother as "tending to her" and "administrating her" as a child, and describes the distance between them. My first thought was Kate Gosselin and how she manages her
children, never showing true affection for them as individuals.

This distance is illustrated on the cover of her new cookbook. I do not see love, I see posing, awkward and uncomfortable children, doing as
they are told to sell a book for mommy.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate.

There are people on this blog who know more about the law than I do. As for Jon not having to pay support b/c Kate let him out of it...I don't understand. I think theres more to the story than we'll ever know.
********************
This has been discussed a lot here, with Admin and others helping to explain that one of the primary reasons that Jon would no longer have to pay child support is if he and Kate split custody equally. It appears that this is the case - with each of them having custody of the children 50% of the time. Therefore, each of them are "paying" 50% towards the care and upbringing of the children.

Someone posted above about an author having to repay an advance, and it made we wonder about Kate's advance for "I Just Want You To Know". I read that she received several hundred thousand as her advance, yet the book only sold less than 11,000 copies. Doesn't that mean that she has to repay the unearned portion of her advance? After all it is an advance payment on sales, and those sales didn't happen. Zondervan is not such a large publisher that they can cut their losses on such a large amount.

================

Hi Layla,

I just saw this.... I don't think my friend's deal was typical. Usually an advance is a risk the publisher assumes because it expect to easily sell that many copies (enough to pay the advance back to themselves) and many more. So unless Kate signed a really bad deal like my friend, she probably didn't have to pay it back.

But your numbers on Kate are interesting because you're right that Kate probably didn't earn back that advance. If they paid Kate an advance of say $200,000, they expected sales of a bare minimum of 100,000 copies.

At a hardback price of $22 and a royalty rate of about 10%, "I Just Want You to Know" would have earned back about $2.20 per book. On 11,000 books sold at full price, that's about $24,000--nowhere close to a several hundred thousand dollar advance. Zondervan wasn't happy.

Those copies of IJWYTK were in the dollar store bin for a reason. Zondervan was trying to make *something* off of them. Kate would have made about 10 cents per book royalties on those--but she never saw it because it went to paying back that advance.

Even if she didn't have to physically pay back that advance, it still cost her. You can bet other publishers were watching. It's probably one reason Zondervan canceled the cookbook and another reason Kate had such a hard time finding someone else to do it.

So if HCI DID traditionally publish Kate (paid for the printing and marketing), why would they do it if they were aware of those numbers? My guess is for the name recognition of Gosselin. They wanted to add her to their list of "look who we published" stories. They just assumed her name would automatically sell books. They haven't learned that marketing with Kate is just as Admin commented above--she's infamous not famous!

Virginia Pen Mom said...

Correction--the cover price of "I Just Want You to Know" is $22.99, so Kate's royalty would have been around $2.30 per book, not $2.20. Not that it mattered much on those low sales!

Reading the publisher's blurb about "I Just Want You to Know" makes it clear that Zondervan believed they had almost 10 million potential buyers of Kate's book. Zondervan also believed Kate "grateful," "faith filled" and "sacrificing." They obviously didn't know Kate!

"The 9.8 million viewers of TLC's Jon and Kate Plus Eight recognize Kate Gosselin as the practical mom of eight who has come into their homes for over 100 episodes of her family's hit reality show. In I Just Want You to Know, Kate reveals a grateful and faith-filled mother who only wants the best for her children and is willing to sacrifice to make that happen."

I was listening to a Christian radio station The Fish yesterday and they had the story of a mother who decided to give up her smartphone when her daughter was born. She still allows herself internet time and T.V. but it is severely limited to only a few minutes a day. I don't think going that extreme is necessary but it was a good reminder that sometimes it's okay to just cut yourself off from the world. And is especially something to consider on family time on holidays.

My DVR is fired up too! Country Boys is another of his works and PBS has it online for free. I've only gotten a chance to see Part 1 but I found he handled the subject--two impoverished, struggling teens in rural Kentucky--with sensitivity and grace. One of the boy's father killed himself and the boy's mother, and he filmed the moment that the boy searched for articles about it online and read about it for the first time. Kids will do that. He really is a brilliant filmmaker who respects his subjects. I can't wait to see the rest.

As far as house rules for tonight, I'm going to allow people to discuss it in real time if they want to. If you don't want to be spoiled it would be a good idea to avoid the thread until you've watched.

For 99% of our contracts (nonfiction business), royalties were 10% of *net* sales, not gross. I suppose Kate could have gotten her agent to negotiate to get 10% gross, but it's not the standard (at least not where I worked).

That's marketing. It doesn't mean they necessarily believed it (although they could have). As someone mentioned earlier, publishing is about making money, like any other business. At the time, that was the image Kate was (somewhat successfully, I guess?) pushing, so it makes sense that that's how they'd market the book.

Exactly. The haters have been very cruel, and yes, very vile in many of their tweets to her. It takes the patience of Job not to fight back and take the high road. But it's something you've got to do. It's unbelievable for adults to behave that way. However, you just consider the source, and you either don't respond at all or you tweet something like, "I appreciate your opinion, but it's not one that I share..that's what makes the world go around," or something similar. It's difficult for a hater to attack something like that, and it's not fun for them because the other person isn't continuing the back and forth bantering. You don't tweet, "BLOCKED."

Someone should have advised Kate of this from the beginning. Perhaps she was told, but didn't listen. Her mouth has gotten her into the fix she's in right now, and it's just too late for her.

I guess it's a parent's choice if they want their kid to view a graphic depiction of the crucifixion, but I don't see how it's in any way appropriate to make some joke or message about editing on your show over it. If you feel it's time your children see such a thing, sit down together and talk about it and view it, and leave Twitter out of it. Were they watching the Bible live together without Kate first seeing for herself how it's portrayed and whether it's appropriate for her 8 year olds?

I tried to post my feelings on ROL about kate and her bully buddies but it won't let you. There is 2 articles. One picture is of her with her hand near her chin spread out with the big diamond ring on her third finger.

Nice to show off your diamond jewelry to the churches who gave money to her sob story about having to look for change in the sofa to pay whatever bill was due.

I think the Bible series it too violent for kids under 10. A great movie that is no way near graphic is the old standard, The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston.

I will never forget the scene when the elderly lady was working in front of the big rolling rock and her dress got stuck and it was going to roll over her.

I think it was Vincent Price that said who cares, and Joshua was standing there and he got on a rope somehow and got down to her to get her out. My sons were cheering Joshua, way to go Joshua! They were 10 and under.

I think kate should of shown the kids this instead of the more graphic violent Bible. My youngest son who is 27, LOVES the Bible mini-series. He will ask me, are you not watching it? I said yes, off and on!

Someone posted that what kate tweeted was borderline blasphemy. NO! It is Blasphemy! It was Blasphemy showing up at churches LYING AND SOBBING and taking the love offerings and selling the 20 picture!

I wonder how many of those pictures she had printed up and how many she sold.

I wonder if the IRS knows about this?

There was a Jon hater that hated Jon on twitter so bad, the tweets to him were awful. But Jon has sense, he shut his down. Hopefully, he got another account that is private only to him and his family members and close friends.

kate will never do that.

Also, kate is condoning that bullyville is doing this for her because of the lies that the haters are tweeting her. The abuse of the kids, the dogs. In a round about way, that is what Robert has in the book and I wonder if Robert could bring out the big info when the book is released? And could sue her?

I am so excited for my dear friend who is over Operation Christmas Child for the North District of my state, she is going to a huge conference in Orlando at the Hilton. They have the facilities to accommodate a huge conference like this one.

OCC does shoe boxes with gifts that are distributed all over the world and this past Christmas, over all the years, 100 MILLION boxes have went all over the world to poor children.

Many have not ever received a present or a gift. Many need certain things, like a washcloth, a boy who was in an orphanage had to share 1 washcloth with 20 other kids! He got a shoebox with a washcloth! When I told my brother that, the next day he was there loading up boxes making big boxes to send from him.

I have been doing the shoeboxes for 10 years. I was in my wheelchair in my apt. (spotless) I had a reacher! lol And she called me one day out of the blue and asked me if I could just wrap some boxes so she could put them at the display so people could just grab a box, get the things to put in it and bring it back. Many boxes were made like this over the years.

Then I would wrap the lid separate from the box and on the inside lid, on the first year, I just wrote Jesus loves you.

Then it just exploded to artwork, I wrote out songs, flowers, the sun, Jesus loves you in all different colors. I also put 14 red birds for a young man who was my son's best friend who died with cancer at 14.

A basketball and a football because of all my son's involvement with sports.

It is very possible that she will get to personally speak to Franklin Graham! She is going to tell him all about me and the artwork on the lids, which I call folk art!

I am so excited! She is going to be there Thurs. On my avatar you can see them. I am so happy and blessed I was able to even do this and want to continue doing it for a very long time!

There have been 3 "outings"-- Walt who outed himself on Z on TV 3 years ago, a supposed senior citizen who had a URL to an article on her Twitter profile for many months, written by the person Bullyville "outed" and someone who was tracked by a tracker placed on Kate's email.

There was a PA resident who was outed this morning. That makes four.

What a nightmare over there. I was trying to follow some of it last night and gave up. It's not too late for Kate to say, "Hey, guys, I appreciate your support in trying to help me be free of what I consider to be unkind attacks from non-fans on Twitter, but I'm asking you to remove yourselves from any outings, tweets, and so forth. I do not want to be involved or connected with any of this."

It's not too late. She can end it all now.

Someone is continuing to help this no-talent grifter stay in the public eye. People magazine, once again, gave her some print about this hopeless cookbook. It will flop. Mark my words. Too many of us have her number now for this to be a "best-seller." In a short time, it will be on the shelf at the Dollar stores or Goodwill like the other books she supposedly wrote. The woman is nothing without those 8 kids, her true claim to fame.
