Biggest Loser Kids: The new cast features three overweight teens

In a surprise move, the acclaimed reality show The Biggest Loser, which premiered tonight, has for the first time added kids to their cast. Bingo, age 13, Lindsay, also 13, and Sunny, age 16, are part of the cast this season. The show promises to tackle childhood obesity with the addition of the three kids. Fortunately, Biggest Loser films in Calabasas in California, protected by California's well-received child labor laws for reality shows. By law, a parent or guardian, and a set teacher, will need to be at the ranch when the children are there.

The Biggest Loser changed a few things to accommodate the kids. They can't be voted off, and they won't participate in the famous, sometimes demoralizing, weekly weigh-ins. They appear to be thus far more like a smaller side story parallel to the main contestants, the adults.

The move has not been without controvesy, however. Fitness guru and author Golda Poretsky says the show encourages bullying of overweight children, and physician Yoni Freedhoff is calling for an all-out boycott. Said Dr. Freedhoff
"I would imagine that the psychological devastation of weight regain in any of these children will be far more damaging to them, and far more likely to be ridiculed by their peers and even complete strangers, than regain in any adult participant. As far as blame goes - I don't blame the children for wanting to be involved (their parents I'll cover tomorrow) - the show's messaging is incredibly seductive. I do however blame the producers as no doubt they understand the implications of these kids being in America's cold, hard, spotlight and however well intentioned they might claim to be, ultimately what they're doing is exploiting children for the sake of viewers, and I believe, putting children in true harm's way."
Coach Bob Harper had this to say: "With the kids, we wanted to do exactly the opposite of when we work with the adults. We do no breaking down, just lifting up ... It's about getting kids to move around again and getting kids to be kids."

But the show is already putting a lot of responsibility on the kids, calling them "ambassadors." What if they can't live up to the expectations for them? How will a 13-year-old handle such pressures in front of a national audience?

AuntieAnn, Bears Wife & P.J.s Mama ~ I hadn't seen that episode, but ugh, further proof of her insensitivity (understatement). Yeah, she's all you've called her, and more.

At the end, she admits that what she's just said to Steve was mean, but she does so with a smirk on her face. Steve responds, half-jokingly: "Extremely mean. Not only that, it's hurtful." She ignores what he's just said to her, unbuckles her harness and walks away, gum-chewing as she goes.

If I were Kate, I'd be so, so embarrassed by my behavior! No way could someone reasonably suggest that the clip is edited to make her look bad.

Improbable, she not only has a smirk on her face, she cackles with glee at her editing remark. She really does seem happiest when given the opportunity to mock someone else. And Mady runs over and says 'nice job' and tries to hug her and she doesn't even notice.
I guess it bothers me so much because she reminds me so much of my own mother. And boy, do we have issues. Mine are about control and being controlled and every one of my brothers are addicts/alcoholics.

Yesterday at 2:34 p.m. Eastern time, Berks Neighbor posted a Kate sighting at Lowes, about 20 minutes after she saw her.

A few hours later, at 5:50 p.m., Eastern time, Kate tweeted...

@HspncElvis thanks! Thats very kind of you but I went to @Lowes today! :)

I wonder if Kate would have admitted to being at Lowes if she had known that she was seen there in the parking lot, waving her arms while talking on her pink iPhone!

By the way, I get a bit confused with the Berks IDs. There is Berks Neighbor, Berks Resident, Over In Kate's County, and wasn't there someone here who posted or still posts under Neighbor In Berks?

Does she even still HAVE those solar pannels up? I mean I would really like to think that most people wouldn't ever act like she does towards people. It's just really mean and not necessary. If she even tried a little harder to be nicer to people, she might actually have friends that don't leave her. But I bet she's too busy making her stupid "French" yogurt to think about that.

If she's really hung up on about going to France, or French making products or whatever the case the least she could do is study the culture of France, it's people and learn. She has the ability to learn beyond her made-up words she just choses not to because she thinks it's "cute-ish."

You might could get away with that, say if you were a 15 year old kid but at 37...come on no guy is going to want to put up with, "Whine, whine, I'm exhausted-ish." I mean really? She's kidding herself.

But in any case she'd probably be too lay to even experience what the real Paris is. Not your tourist laden trappings, or the McDonald's where all the American's go to eat but I mean the Paris that's behind the tourist attractions. Take a walk a few blocks away from any main street and that's what you'll find.

Well, this is Kate. Closest she'd ever want to get to it is finding a spa that will cater to her and let her eat those four desserts.

Marie,

There are NO scientific studies that prove the flu vaccine works.

None. Try and find them. Search through the medical research databases....

If I'm incorrect, I apologize in advance, but I'm assuming this Anonymous post was from Heather since iirc, we've had similar discussions about health/food research/education with her in the past.

Who said anything about "proof" the flu vaccine works? I know I didn't. I HAVE done research and I take offense with your accusation that I'm NOT "a smart consumer of medical information. Understand what is going on." I DO understand what is going on. And, IMO, I do not buy into all the big business/government cover-ups and conspiracy theories about everything questionable in regards to food/drugs/consumerism. What I don't understand is your feeling "... forced me to respond in a harsher tone" and feel the need to 'educate' the readers here.

I've done my research. I take the flu vaccine - quite willingly - because the risks to my health if I were to get the flu far outweigh the consequences of not getting it. I do not believe it causes the flu (the strains it's protecting against, anyway). I choose to do due diligence, weigh the personal risks and gains, and make choices that are best for me. While I appreciate that you seem to be coming from a good place, I respectfully ask you to temper your "advice" and respect that the readers here ARE educated consumers who probably do not appreciate you inferring that we are not (I know I don't).

Could be that she's "Rubik Cubing" her concepts by mixing her first ideas together. "It's a show about ME, of course, taking care of MY house and MY 8 kids, alone, with no help at all whatsover (when I'm there, of course...), all the while cooking MY delicious organic meals, baking homemade organic bread, and preparing homemade organic yogourt as I travel all around the globe trying desperately to meet a new daddy for 8 kids as so to grant them their dearest wish. A famous mother may or may not come to MY house to take care of them while I'm traveling. It depends: she can't be too cute, or nice, or funny, or too good with kids."

One more OT re influenza. For more info than you probably want to know, go to www.cdc.gov/flu
I rely on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for up to date, accurate information about flu and lots of other health conditions. I do work in healthcare and over the years have taken flu vaccine every year, and I have given vaccines to many people. It is true that coherent people react differently to different vaccinations, medications, allergens, environmental factors. It is a fact that anyone can call to report an adverse vaccine reaction, even if it is only a possible reaction.
Bottom line: trust YOUR healthcare provider and discuss the possible risks and benefits of any vaccine for you. Whether our not you get a vaccine, practice good hygiene and infection control, WASH YOUR HANDS!
Personal note: my children got the HPV vaccine add soon add it was approved in this country. No problems.
Another personal note: I have a twelve year old Boston terrier who recently started having seizures after being on a medication for 5 days. The vet does not think the medication is the cause, since seizures were still going on after the drug was out of her system. I think it may be related,.and called the parmaceutical company helpline on my own to report a possible case of adverse reaction. I got a case number and everything! I have a much younger dog that took same med, no problems. But this dog is older and smaller and maybe there need to be more warnings for use in older dogs.
Like I said, way OT!!

Veeerrrrry interesting, Joy. Mr. old man Bichon received Adequan injections for arthritis and I believe it helped him, however, I noted that he would wind up with diarrhea after. After 3 courses of metronidazole and a little weight loss, I gave up on the Adequan.
My vet does not believe the Adequan caused it because it's not listed as a side effect. She said, "well, he's old and his stomach can't take the food scraps etc". But if the variable is the Adequan and the constant in Mommy's home cooking nibbles, me thinks it's the Adequan that disturbed his GI.
I'm going to give the pharma company a call tomorrow. Who knows!?

Lilly, Kate GREEN? The lazy woman uses literally thousands of paper plates and plastic cutlery and cups every year! She would only know if something was green if it was actually the color green. That's something that doesn't set right with me either. We live in a very green community, from recycling to composting. The only garbage we generate here is bagged dog waste (which is bad, I know) and the cellophane wrappers of stuff that can't be recycled, and a few other exceptions. I put the waste can out for pickup once a month and there's not much in it.

My son had a severe reaction to the measles vaccine. In fact, it was touch and go there for awhile, that's how serious it was. Since it is required for school-age children, when it came time for the next dose, I was scared to death. I talked it over with the pediatrician, and even got a second opinion. Both agreed that his chances of having another reaction, possible seizures and severe complications, including paralysis from the vaccine was greater than his chance of getting the measles. We got a medical vaccine exemption.

I did much research and spent many sleepless nights over my decision...to get the shot, or not to get the shot, and with the help of the physicians, I hope I made the right choice.

When we rented an apartment, he was so persnickety, he would go outside to one tree for #1, then confidently lead me to the depths of the parking garage, squat there, and I'd carry him and his poo up 81 steps. Every time. His poo habits were good for the old glutes and heart!

I immediately thought of Katie Irene--wasn't it about that time that she made her comment about "de-aging" during a television interview? Rather than say age backwards, she converted it into what she thought would be a cute, unique word to describe her fabulous! looks. Yep, not an original bone in her body.

Exploitation of children is just wrong, plain and simply, wrong. Networks are taking advantage of people who need money and making millions. Good for June if she is truly investing in all 5 kids' education, but it's still exploitation. The money will dry up. The public is fickle and will move on to another form of entertainment. New and strange is what reality television is all about. Not pretty, really.

Well, folks, have we forgotten so soon that Kate put in window screens by herself once? I mean, where's the credit for that? C'mon.

When she bought the house she fully expected her run on TLC to continue into the future. That would mean she would have the "daddies" there several days a week with their tool boxes and her vacuum hose all ready to go to fix things without making a mess. Or, would at the very least call someone to come fix things because it was interfering with filming, making Kate crankier than usual. Uh oh, that didn't happen.

At this point, I would bet that a great percentage of people out there don't know who she is, or did know at one point but have since forgotten.

Her name was prominent in 2009, when she was constantly showing up in tabloids. That went away fairly quickly, and before that, unless you watched the show, you didn't necessarily know she she was.

You know I just thought of it. The way Kate has been known to treat people, the way she comes off towards other people? The thing is, you can make all the excuses you want:

I was having a bad day. I'm nicer once you get to know me, it was stress, any number of excuses really.

But the bottom line I think has to be, if the way you treat people comes off on a lot of people the same way I mean it says more about how you really are then just a one-time bad day.

I also wonder, if people ever continually treated, they probably have, treated Kate the same way she's treated people, the guy who installed her solar panels or anyone else for that matter I can also bet she'd be a raving lunatic about how "ill-treated," she was.

Treat people the way you would want to be. I think it says a lot on it's own. Whether you believe it or not I think it does.

The way she treat's people or from what I have seen, I also think it comes off and shows her kids how to treat other people. Kids learn most of what they know from people the spend time with how you should treat other people. Kate hasn't done that great of a job I don't think. The servant's remark still bugs me for some reason.

I hope that I try and come off nice to people, even people I don't necessarily know but from my background more then anything I think a lot of how I learned to treat people, out of respect it wasn't something I learned when it shoved down my throat, we kids were seen and never, ever heard. But I think I learned a better way to treat people just by fact I spent a lot of time with a neighbor lady.

I am going to hop that Kate's kids will learn other ways of how people should and deserve to be treated. Not by her standards of making those faces, damanding and carrying on, but through other people, Jon, anyone really where kids can learn better behavior.

It's too late for Kate. She's not going to change her behavior. Too old of a dog, to new of a trick in this case.

Even if she said she's seen her behavior, that she was glad the camera was there to keep one of her kids in check, well from what I'e seen Kate hasn't and won't ever actually take responsibility--camera or camera in your face your actions and how you say things will forever say more about you then what you deny.

It is an interesting phenomenon that people who ask questions are no longer investigative, curious, seeking the truth or "educated consumers."

It is simply easier to label them as conspiracy theorists and dismiss what they say without even examining whether it is indeed fact.

If journalism actually performed a public service, as it was originally intend to be the voice of the people, there would be no need for accusations and dismissals of "conspiracy theory." Because we would know the truth.

P.S. Merck falsified data and lied about safety and efficacy of its MMR vaccine that is injected directly into the bloodstream of toddlers. And they did this for TEN YEARS.

Here's a link from a legal website because the mainstream media couldn't be bothered to let parents know about this.

"Merck has known for a decade that its mumps vaccine is "far less effective" than it tells the government, and it falsified test results and sold millions of doses of "questionable efficacy," flooding and monopolizing the market, a primary caregiver claims in a federal antitrust class action.
Alabama-based Chatom Primary Care sued Merck on Monday, the week after the unsealing of a False Claims Act complaint two relators filed in 2010."

But keep believing that all drugs are safe. Because asking questions only means you are a "conspiracy theorist."

heather here ...

Over the last decade, my interpretation of conspiracy theory has changed. I used to see it as a term describing crackpots who are out of touch with reality.

Now, if a story or person os labeled as such, it piques my interest for two reasons.

there is something not true about the official story
there is something true in the conspiracy theory

The easiest way to discredit someone is to call them crazy. Which raises the question: Why is this person/idea being discredited? Why are they/it being singled out for ridicule if they pose no threat? So the logical answer is, they DO pose a threat, they need to be discredited, and calling them crazy is the easiest way to do so to ensure that the "official story" is retained without question.

It must be difficult to have someone sleuthing out some tax document, and have them immediately draw the worst conclusions about you without even considering what is true in someone's head may not be what the reality was, is only the reality for one person. With a tax code 1,000's of pages long, many good people find themselves with liens because of various tax disputes, just like many good, hard working, dedicated people every day are shocked to find themselves in disputes in which what is accused is so far from the truth they are floored. If you fall victim to this, it's difficult, but you have to trust the authorities can handle it, and they do. If something is in truth bogus, if someone's reality is just not the truth of what happened, it is dismissed.
