Many running races have a charitable element, or a cause, associated with them. The R&R San Diego event has 10 official charities.

Normally, part of the entrance fee goes to the charity, while the workers/volunteers on the race course are people associated with the charity benefiting from the event.
Of course, the "running for charity" language assumes an entrance fee was paid. If the entrance fee was "comped", the runner is not supporting the charitable aspect of the event.
With just over a week to go until her race, I am surprised that she doesn't have more to say about her training.
Wonder when she will be flying out?
I have only been to San Diego once. It is a beautiful area. We hiked on Palomar Mountain.

Thanks for your thoughts. LoveMyGrandsons. It was a long time ago, but, obviously, since I spilled it so readily to all of your lovely strangers, I am still affected by it. I wish that I had the good heart of the people here who are giving Iwana the benefit of the doubt. I was feeling a little guilty that my immediate reaction was so skeptical. But, I must say, that the only thing that could have made me more skeptical, is Iwana commenting on our comments.
Oh, well....Iwana, if there is truth that you remarried your ex-wife for no other reason than to ease her final days, then I wish you both peace. My father-in-law left my husband's mother after a mastectomy, 6 months before she was diagnosed with Stage 4. He reappeared in her final weeks and I know that it did give her comfort.

I hesitated about posting this because I remember that some posters participate in Rock n Roll marathons. I was curious about the charities/nonprofits that donations go to. Wouldn't you know--

In 2008, the Competitor Group took over Elite Racing, the company that had been organizing the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. The following year, 2009, an internal audit revealed that the charity in whose name the race had been run, Elite Racing Foundation for Children, Education & Medical Research, had been improperly commingling funds with the for-profit Elite Racing. It further found that the foundation was being operated "in many instances for the benefit of the for-profit,” and that the charity's role in hosting the races had been overstated. As a result, the race had benefited improperly from hundreds of thousands of dollars in public subsidies and grants. In announcing the results of the audit, Competitor said it would return $190,500 to San Diego County and $152,544 to the city of San Diego, spend the remaining foundation funds on health and wellness causes, file amended tax returns, and dissolve the foundation.[3][4] Competitor Group made the final payments in October 2009. Altogether the company returned $344,176 to the city and county.[5]"
There is a lot that is fishy, but it is really difficult to explain the red flags. One example that can be understood is that in 2009, the foundation received $42, 500 in grants and only distributed $2,520.00 in grants for educational and medical research. After reviewing, my guess is that the IRS found that $600,000 was improperly funneled fom the for profit corporation that runs the marathons and the non-profit foundation ( which has a common CEO--Peter Englehart.
The Rock N Roll website now lists 10 charities that allegedly will benefit. No proof exists that any donation will ever be made, and, it has already been proven that they have been unethical. If the donations are actually paid with real money--not phony IOUs--the corporation will take the tax deduction that was paid by the runners.
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade because it sounds like fun. That company seems to have come up with an event format that appeals to many runners. But, if anyone is doing it for charity, it is safer to donate directly to your favorite cause.

Here we are, at the end of May, and Kate's just now sheduled to run her first 1/2 marathon of the year--not a full, because she's working on her timing, she says.
Given that she's also planning to run 3 more half-marathons this year, plus a full, and all the charity events in between, I'm with Dmasy in wondering how/when she's fitting in those practice runs, and am curious about her training schedule overall.
I'm not a runner, so I'd love to hear from someone who is.

Does anyone know what happened to the new "besties" that Kate ran with in LV? Have they disappeared off the map? Is it possible they actually did see or find out that she cheated on her first marathon, but had been talked into signing a confidentiality agreement? That would totally explain them never having anything to do with her again, the strange phenomenon that happens with all her new "friends".
