The Red Cross didn't approve this one!

The Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter said they had nothing to do with Kate's recent, insensitive photo on her web site, in which she is barefoot and wearing a low cut top that blends in with a Red Cross blanket given to victims of disasters. The organization, which leans very conservative, has been getting a lot of complaints.

Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, a conservative Republican who once worked on Elizabeth Dole's campaign for president, is the current chairman of the American Red Cross.  Thanks to Gather's Sue Buddy for giving the local chapter a call.

Donate to the Southeastern PA's chapter here. They have lots of options, from local disaster relief, to aid to Africa.

Carrying over the conversation, but there is a lot of freedom to use a company's logo under the Fair Use doctrine and Free Speech case law.

For instance if I wanted to use the Red Cross logo as the photo for this post I could without a problem. I'm not misrepresenting anything, I'm just doing a post talking about them.

But say someone controversial like say Bernie Madoff decided to go around wearing jackets that .have the Sesame Street logo all over it You might wonder is he working for Sesame Street now, is he their spokesperson, what's going on?

You might be successful with a misrepresentation claim in that scenario. And the same with a controversial celeb who makes herself appear half naked wrapped in your blanket.

Busted, big-time, yeah.... said...

Kate looks utterly ridiculous and desperate in that picture.

Moving over from previous thread:

That picture of Kate wrapped in a Red Cross blanket looking nude and trying to look seductive is truly offensive. It's not enough that she's her own PR disaster, now she has to drag a charitable organization into her nasty little world.

Who does that? Who associates themselves publicly with a self-promotional photo without even contacting the organization to coordinate efforts?

What a disgusting piece of work she is. I'll bet the Red Cross is just thrilled to be spending time dealing with the fallout from this stunt.

Lee said...

Oh, and way to go, coupon website. You've got a real winner there.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Readerlady, the chairman of the Red Cross is currently Bonnie McElveen-Hunter. She is definitely southern Republican. She was on Elizabeth Dole's campaign team. It does not surprise me Red Cross is leaning Republican/conservative right now.

There's no way a Dole-ite would be okay with this naked-time.

Marie said...

You know, I have to say, this was done in poor taste, ill consideration and with distasteful feelings towards a foundation that it conservative.

Isn't Kate aware of any of these things? Probably not is my guess.

This looks like a shot for a provocative calendar spread for Playboy or a personal gift one might give to a boyfriend or something of that nature I suppose, not for a charity picture. It's just tacky in my opinion here. I hope this comment doesn't break any rules or sounds to terrible by any means but that is honestly the first thing I thought of when I saw this picture. The "come hither," type is what I thought of. Sorry if that would make my comment offensive.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

When I make the pic small enough to fit the space, she definitely looks naked.

She's so dumb and thoughtless.

I'm sure the story of this offensive picture will hit the proverbial fan by morning ensuring her plenty of "ink" while she is down under.

She is a perfect example of what we (my family) used to describe as CRISIS ORIENTED. She doesn't feel ALIVE unless she has some big DRAMA going on, real or imagined. Either way, she is 100% responsible for making her constant molehills into mountains. Often, she has to invent the molehill to begin with.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Totally agree 100%. She is utterly incapable of being happy with the quiet and simple life that makes so many others of us very content. Many people, I venture to say most people, would much rather walk away from drama. And then there's the rest of them, like Kate, that make us miserable.

For as exhausted as she claims to be, these kind of people make everyone else exhausted. You walk away, you cut them off, you avoid them. Whatever you need to do.

After the "great Blizzard of 2011" that struck Kate and "cancelled" Halloween, maybe a fan sent her a Red Cross disaster blanket to keep her warm.

If so, I hope the kids all got one, too. I doubt Kate shares much.

Moose Mania said...

She's sitting in an upscale home, on a plush chair, perfect makeup, bleached hair - ostentatious. How does this represent the disaster victims who benefit from Red Cross aid? This was poorly thought out. I'm surprised she's not sitting on her LEATHER sofa with the SWIMMING POOL in the background!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It's a lot more likely that Kate sprung for the blanket, a whole nine dollars apparently, so that she could do this promo for herself. She was probably thrilled to pieces when she thought of it.

It's not as if she'd actually contribute to a charity. The idiot didn't even bother to link to the Red Cross. The only "giving" she has ever done has apparently been completely on TLC's dime, unless you count some "donations" of her unsellable books.

Just when you think she couldn't get any worse, she manages to top herself. You couldn't make this stuff up.

I totally agree with every one here, that the Red Cross must be very ashamed to see little miss nobody all wrapped up like a pin-up girl in their blanket! Does kate not think of her children when she does things like this? The twins are at the age now, to be totally mortified by their mother's skanky behavior.I guess she has not yet totally lost her entire mind. She really does not have a clue.

Anybody can link to anything they want. By staging this picture, she is implying that she is part of this campaign. Of course, that is not ethical or right or anything else appropriate.

But there's no reason she, or anyone else, can't add a link to any post or site. It's done all the time, by people who love sites, and people who hate them. No one needs permission to make a link.

It's not just the photo alone, but the totality of Khate's actions here. I put this comment in the last thread:

Sue Buddy said...

Administrator said...

Sue, you said that the person you spoke to thought they couldn't make KAte take the pic down.

I'm actually not sure Kate DOES have that right. She could be seen as misrepresenting her connection with the Red Cross, it could be construed as she is trying to pass herself off as a celebrity spokesperson when she is not. The Red Cross might be able to get her to take it down based on false representation.
++++++

Good point, Admin. He certainly sounded sure that they didn't have the authority. Perhaps another phone call is in order tomorrow. I'll give it some thought.

-------------------------------------

Sue, I would suggest that you try to have your contact there give you a name and number for a legal department, if possible. There has to be a staff attorney to look at this. It is NOT just about an innocent photo. Khate placed the photo on her home page AND placed this paragraph next to it:

Home Fire Relief Campaign

I'm happy to support American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania's Home Fire Relief Campaign this fall! It's exciting to be a part of the effort that will help home fire victims in my local area!

--------

That sure as heck looks like an attempt at misrepresentation. I noticed that she has it right above her pimping for coupon cabin.

fidosmommy said...

I have no problem with Kate posting a clickable link to the Red Cross on her site. It could generate some more cash or blood donations from new sources. Nothing wrong with that.

But the picture does make assumptions that the Red Cross has somehow linked itself to Kate Gosselin.

Nobody Likes a Narcissist said...

The sheeple are yet again trying to cover Khate's messes for her. After nonfans attacked her for grifting for free cereal, the sheeple said they placed orders from Cascadian Farm's website and tweeted Cascadian about it. Well, they've been tweeting all night that they're donating to Red Cross since Khate "supports" them.

Lee said...

Is THIS what that paragraph says?

I'm happy to support American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania's Home Fire Relief Campaign this fall! It's exciting to be a part of the effort that will help home fire victims in my local area!

Wow, that sure smacks of misrepresentation, all right.

That's beyond shameless, unless it HAS been approved by the Red Cross. And if it has, shame on them.

Nobody Likes a Narcissist said...

I also want to point out, as I did somewhere in the other thread, that I checked what Khate has that photo saved as and it's "announcement". Interesting.

Just to explain a bit, since my first, knee-jerk reaction upon seeing the pic of Kate was that I would stop donating to the Red Cross, once I got the facts, I immediately changed my mind and hope that I can reach others who might feel the same.

I have confidence in the Red Cross and will continue to support them.

Nobody Likes a Narcissist said...

Sheesh, the sheeple work so much harder at protecting Khate and covering for her, than Khate has ever worked for herself for even one day.

It's great for the charity if Kate fans want to donate for whatever reason. But in this case I think the Red Cross has to weigh the potential bad PR from Kate's actions to what they might gain in the additional donations. This misstep could snowball on Kate.

I don't know who is advising this woman, but they are doing dumbass job of it. Every other day, she does something to make herself look bad and desperate. She publicly mention product names and organizations that she has no ties to, why? (excuse me ladies) I call this tactic "Pissing in the wind and hope something sticks". This is definitely not the way for any known personality to get a spokesperson gig. Gilbert Gottfried is probably still kicking himself for that inappropriate "Japanese Ho's floating by from the Tsunami" tweet that got him fired from Aflac.

On the other hand, could TLC still be stringing her along until the contract expires in February 2012? Very similar to how Herman Cain is imploding in the media right now. He just gave his "I don't know who that woman is" speech tonite. Seems like the Koch Brothers advising team is letting him fail on his own before they shove him off the precipice.

I looked at Kevin Bacon's blanket photo. I'm not too crazy about any celeb using the blanket. Real victims use those in real disasters. It's not an opportunity for a pinup photo. But at least he's not half naked in his.

As usual our views get twisted around. The campaign is great. It's the inappropriateness of the photo that's the issue.

msc said...

lol Sam, do you think TLC wants to be associated with Kate at this point? But I agree, Kate needs to fire her PR person, even if it's herself.

Nobody Likes a Narcissist said...

Btw, regarding my last post, the sheeple got those two photos (of Kevin Bacon and of Beth Shak, a professional poker player) only because American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania (@RedCrossPhilly on Twitter) tweeted thanks to both of them earlier today for their support. That was in response to Kevin and Beth tweeting to their followers about the campaign, both using the proper #tag on Twitter.

Note that Khate did not tweet about the campaign and RedCrossPhilly did NOT thank Khate for her "support", but sheeple are trying to make it look like Khate is simply part of this campaign. It looks more like she co-opted it as a way of getting HERSELF some attention.

Non-fan, long time reader, not a commenter, here.
I have to say it seems that the blind rage people have for this wretched beast is really starting to cloud the judgement of many.

1. There is nothing wrong with that picture! Nothing. Provocative? Please. Come hither look? Are we seeing the same picture? She's wrapped in a blanket, completely covered. How can one possibly entertain the notion that she's naked underneath? Furthermore, who cares if she is? She's covered up! Playboy spread? I have no words for the complete fail that analogy is.
You can see her ankles, is that the problem? Are we back in the 19th century?

2. Her saying she's "proud to be part of the effort..." in no way alludes to her representing or being a spokesmodel for ARC. People are making connections that don't exist. If you think she is trying to be sneaky in "aligning" herself with them, you are giving her waaaaaaaay too much credit. She is a complete and total idiot and lacks the ability to properly express herself. That's it. Her "being proud to be a part of the effort" is her way of saying she gave them some money. In her narcissistic little head, if she throws them a couple of bucks, she has done a great service and has heavily participated in some monumental way. Because naturally, everything she does is HUGE.

3. All the moaning about her never giving back except when the cameras are rolling and here's a time when she very well may have donated to a charity. (I'm sorry she's too much of an imbecile too link their donation page from her web site). If you want to think she only did it in order to brag about it and get some good PR points, then go ahead, cause that's what I think. But really, some of you are calling to complain and ask them stupid questions about some washed up reality hag? Really? The Red Cross is in the business of SAVING LIVES. And you want to take up their valuable time whining that you don't like the fact that Kate bleeping Gosselin is wrapped in a Red Cross blanket. Get a grip.

I understand everyone is entitled to an opinion. Do me the courtesy of allowing me to have mine. I think this blanket picture controversy is a load of nonsense and completely irrational.

Since so many people have at first blush had the same reaction: Wait a minute, is she naked??? that speaks volumes. It actually bothers me more that people are wearing blankets that are supposed to be victims of terrible tragedies. I think this campaign needs to be rethought for all celebs.

Of course once you look at it you can see she's not naked, but why should you even have to wonder about that for one second in a Red Cross photo! Why is the Red Cross being flooded with calls about this if it's totally appropriate? No one here said they called except Sue.

what's sad is that kate KNOWS she is polarizing. she said on dancing with the stars (back when she had a show) that 90% of her audience didn't like her. if kate has decided to base her fame on "having haters" then she should realize that things she promotes can actually have a reverse effect. by purposely striking the naked blanket pose she had to know it would stir a little controversy with her "haters"
so my question is..why bring a charity into that? if she's not an official spokesperson and she chose a photo that doesn't jive with the organizations image does she really think she is doing good for the organization by lending her name unasked? wouldn't it have been less "controversial" to just say.."i have donatated to a cause I care about..the Red Cross.." NO ONE could have an issue with that! instead she finds a way to turn her support into a little photo-op that misleads her representation. she really is a classic narcissist. i know we say it alot..but she really is.

Blind Rage for what? Calling out a fame whore for inappropriately posing with a disaster relief blanket? Wow, she donated $9 buying that blanket, yay, the Philly chapter is set this quarter.
All of her actions lately have done nothing to rehabilitate her image as a lazy, cheap, self center person. Problem with that photo is that it mislead people to think that she was affiliated with the Red Cross. This is a disaster relief organization, not PETA's Vegetarians are sexy campaign. She is not the webmaster for her website, she pays someone to do it, so why not post the link. Again, she's being vague and invasive, probably doesn't want people to find out how chintzy her donation was.

I can't stand Kate but I would never call someone names or demean them. Even if they started it. It's called integrity and being an adult.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Em, you get your points across just fine no worries!

Here's a perfect example of why anything "charitable" Kate does many immediately question as self-serving.

Australia. Not a word about saving the koalas in Australia until the free trip fell in her lap. Then it magically somehow became about saving wildlife, in an effort to make a trip that was mostly luxury and for Kate's own vanity about some noble cause. She talked about the koalas for about....10 days afterward. Then, radio silence. Not another word.

Until??? Another free trip to Australia comes up again nine months later! All of a sudden, koalas you're on deck again. It's all about the koalas!

Of course when she's distracted with other silly things like coupons and marathons, she forgets again. But she'll bring it back up when the trip of a lifetime times two starts again.

I can only conclude after all this that Kate could care less about the koalas, and not only could she care less, but she's happy to use them to justify her own exploitation and excessive lifestyle.

Kate can't even wrap a blanket around her without someone making it about her own image and publicity.

It's not really Us vs. Them. It's Us vs. about six people. :) I thought if there were anything we could agree on it would be outrage over Blankinship. But when they're not even willing to bend on that, it kind of does boil down to Us vs. Them.

But seriously, just be respectful of those who are respectful. All opinions are allowed, there is no party line requirement. Just because someone defends their opinion vigorously doesn't mean they are not being welcoming. Defend yours right back, go ahead and play ball too.

I think it's extremely apparent that the "Digging" poster at 10:24 is a sheeple, and I've already stated my reasons. The post made all the same exact points the sheeple argued on Twitter tonight (and I hear, on their blogs). They are notorious for coming here and doing that. They also like to say "you people....". There are some other tells that I see having read many tweets, but I won't get into them.

I didn't see anyone bashing the thoughtful, but in some ways dissenting, post tonight by "Check, please!"

Ugh, this is getting tiresome. Lately, there have been way too many posts like this as far as I'm concerned. I'm going to go back to not addressing any other comments here. It just gets old.

even worse about the koala thing..she just says "oh they are so cute i wanted to bring one home"
kate has been on radio, the view, spoke at penn state and has a website. you would think ONE time she would promote her "cause". i don't even know what the cause is because she never goes into detail. she does not get how this all works. she thinks people invite her to things because she is kate. she uses it as a way to talk about herself. surely the people who reach out to her are thinking she is going to PROMOTE THEM and not herself. still don't know what Terri Irwin thinks kate will do to bring attention to the zoo. doesn't she realize kate taking this trip is all about kate taking a "vacation" and not working? you hear about how exhausted kate is and what a organizing frenzy she is in but seems to always forget the reason she is going. in her mind her "celeb friend" is inviting her and steve out to play..not work. she baffles me. even more baffling is people reach out to her to promote things without realizing that she doesn't know how or is too selfish to not make it all about kate. a little research would save these companies/causes a lot of headache and wasted time.

heck kate doesn't even promote herself correctly. take the view for instance... instead of promoting her website, discussing her coupon gig, announcing her twitter handle, mentioned her marathon details or even promoting her new found fitness routine she sits there like a shlub and whines about a snowstorm and then throws in her already worn out comment about needing to be on tv to support 8 kids. gah!

I see Kate's photo with the blanket and statement about supporting the local Red Cross as trying to change her image. It's long been determined that Kate reads this blog and in my opinion almost every Tweet put out there about her. People have been asking for ages why she doesn't support her local charities. Like I said before it must be exhausting for Kate to constantly be trying to change herself into something she's not all in the name of improving her image. Just like everything else she does this will be a one time thing and won't be mentioned again. Just like her going to church, she only mentions it when someone brings it up again. This woman is truly nuts. I can just picture Kate and Steve spending their days trying to come up with things like this that will make her relevant again. I can just picture him taking these photos. I have a feeling Steve does whatever kate tells him to do.

Kate's delusions are getting worse and worse. She truly puts herself right up there with the likes of Kevin Bacon. I believe in without a doubt Kate is a sociopath.

The last few photos I have seen of Kate look really different. I don't know if she has had some sort of cosmetic surgery or if it is how thin she is but her head looks huge. I think this does happen after someone has lost a lot of weight. She has such a long face and it looks out of proportion with her body now. I say when I think Kate looks pretty but lately I think she actually looks freaky. JMO.

the blanket looks like that sheep (whoopsie, I meant cheap) fleece stuff and could sell for $6. Now if she wanted a photo that would fit with the image of the Red Cross she could have spent, give me a sec here, 6 + 6 = 12 + 6 = 18 + 6 = 24 + 6 = 30... see where I'm going, if she bought nine (count 'em, 9, you know one of her and one for each of the eight, count 'em, 8 kids) she would have donated a whopping $54 to the cause and the pic would have been a hell of a lot cuter although it is a lot less sexy looking when you see a semi-nude blanket wrapped blonde surrounded by eight (yeah, count 'em, 8) kids. She is so desparate she's doing ANYTHING to stay in the spotlight. Love her latest bad press, having Kim Kardashian called the New Kate Gosselin. Who does THAT slam the most?

With all this back and forth, the Red Cross blanket campaign is certainly getting publicity.

Here's the real question for me....why would she pose that way? Does she perceive herself as a sex kitten? I think so, and maybe even Steve does too because I think he took the photo. Some adult did in that household did. I doubt she set up a camera on a tripod and set the timer.
If she wants to support a charitable cause, that's fine, but did she donate any money? I think not.

So, if she purchased the blanket, I guess she is technically supporting the Red Cross, but if she purchased the blanket to purposively mislead that she is a celeb sanctioned by the Red Cross, then that is deceitful. Kate? Deceitful? A Master of Twisting the Truth? Donate money, cold hard cash to a charity? Hmmmm. I think she is attempting to promote herself as a charity celeb spokesperson. Show me the money, Kate.

This is Kate Gosselin we're talking about here. You always have to remember her two strongest qualities:

1. She's bone lazy.
2. She's dumb as a bag of hammers.

So the simplest, dumbest, laziest explanation is almost *always* the correct one when we're talking about something she's done.

She put almost no thought or time into this, of that you can be certain. Someone--her, Steve, maybe that new Coupon Cabin PR woman--says we've got to soften your image, make you seem nicer. (So I think the Coupon Cabin people probably suggested it, since they've no doubt gotten an earful about her as a choice of spokesperson!) Someone does two minutes of web surfing, stumbles across this Red Cross campaign and bam: she GETS SOMEONE to pony up six bucks for the Red Cross blanket (she pays for nothing, bitches, MUWAHAHA!), someone takes her picture wrapped up in it (NO thought is given to how it looks, she gives plenty of thought to how SHE looks), they slap it up on her Pepto-Bismol pink lame-ass website, and that was the end of it.

Of course no link to the Red Cross was put on her Pepto-Bismol pink site, that would have required thought and a bit more work. Of course, she didn't tweet about it, that would have required THOUGHT. And she had already done the work of posing and Miss Website Lady Person had already put it up with those words someone wrote, so it promptly left her little walnut-sized brain.

People here have given it 1,000 times the thought she did. She's dumb and lazy and this is how little she can be arsed to do anything to "improve" her image. Remember TLC was attempting this (the food bank, etc.) before they just said "oh screw it" during the RV trip. Obviously she's got someone again suggesting she do things to improve her image. She sure wouldn't do it on her own, God knows she thinks she's perfect.

The Hallmark of a good celebrity advisor is one who is willing to say....Ooo, Kate, this is the Red Cross and you kinda look naked in this and a bit too diva-ish in your McMansion. Let's reshoot it maybe standing up so we can see you're fully clothed, put some socks on and maybe a cute sweater, against a background a little more neutral.

The fact that no one switched the game plan here either suggests her advisor/Steve is as clueless as she is, or she's simply not listening to what they're suggesting.

I am a volunteer firefighter and have seen the destructive power of fire up close and in person. I have also seen the wonderful work of the Red Cross. They are always there when we call them, whenever they are needed, day or night, in a moment's notice, taking care of people who are displaced by fire. Our region suffered a disastrous flood in September and they have been here ever since. I can't say enough good things about that organization.

Based on Kate's appearance in that photograph, I believe she has no inkling about what the Red Cross's mission is and what they really do. She merely used this as a self-serving photo op.

I thought the whole idea behind the Red Cross blanket sale was that you sent in a donation for a certain number of blankets, and the Red Cross sent the blankets to the disaster victims. That keeps the Red Cross from having to pay for blankets from their own funds. Donors are absorbing the specific cost of blankets.

To clarify: I want to send 10 blankets to some
place that's had a fire. So, I send the Red Cross $60.00, plus maybe an extra amount to help with their transport to the fire area.

I had no idea they were for sale so we could wrap up in them at a football game or lounge around our comfy houses.

Did I get that wrong?

Lisa, I agree. The Red Cross isn't perfect and this is one of their more questionable campaigns. I think they didn't think about how someone who has had to wear that blanket, or even someone who has passed them out, would feel about this. I'm guessing they will sort of let this campaign fade quietly away, another "oopsie."

I give to them because I think as a whole they are a good organization and good people. But with something that big there will be mistakes now and again, almost all charities make mistakes. Having spent a week with them in New Orleans I know first-hand the good hearts so many people have who work for them. We got a TON done. And we helped them clean up the crappy work that Extreme Home Makeover did. Extreme Home Makeover Swooped in, built a playground, and had absolutely no plan for the irrigation system. I guess the producers from sunny LA forgot about the rain. It flooded within a few months. The Red Cross redid the whole thing so they could open it back up to kids again. It was fantastic. No fuss, no frills, no cameras. They didn't have a need to bash Extreme Home Makeover or anything like that. They just said thank you, and then quietly fixed it. What may be forgotten is that 99% of what the Red Cross does is done with almost zero publicity. It is some thing I'VE been happy to support for a decade, Kate.

You responded to a poster who stated "Wow, she donated $9 buying that blanket, yay, the Philly chapter is set this quarter" by posting a link stating that the cost is $6, not $9. A quick question - if you can't buy the blankets, then how did Kate get one? My understanding from the Gather article is that The Red Cross did not solicit her help with this campaign. If that is the case, then again, how did she get a blanket? Something doesn't seem to add up here.

Also, looking at the photo more carefully, I don't think that's a low cut shirt, I think it's a bra. As for the appropriateness, it didn't outrage me as it obviously has some, I just see it as par for the course. Other celebs have used sex to sell a cause they believe in. I'm not saying that's right, I'm just saying it's nothing new. In many ways, I find it laughable but that's because I don't find Kate attractive. I suppose she has fans who view her in a MILF way so they might enjoy her attempt at a pin up. I don't really know or care. ITA that if she was going to participate, she should have had a link and she should have been twittering. As usual, Kate does things half way when it comes to charity.

Admin, I hope you don’t mind me using your blog for a few minutes to make some points. It’s impossible to do it in 140 characters.

I hope Kate’s defenders didn’t lose too much sleep over my article. Their juices sure were flowing from what I’m reading this morning. A little exercise might be more helpful. I just got back from a walk and some dog training. My dogs aren’t puppies but I’ve found you can teach an old dog new tricks. Not sure the same goes for old biddies though.

There are no lies in my article. And I haven’t seen a Kate fan point out any lies so far. I welcome them to find one. Only in their minds is a difference of opinion a lie, I suppose.

Kate’s choice of how to pose is coquettish as I stated and I do feel strongly that it is in poor taste and was poorly thought out. If she had been advertising an 800 late night chat number that’s a different thing. I most definitely spoke with someone at the Red Cross and I won’t post his name. Can you imagine doing that in this hostile climate? I wrote exactly what he told me.

As of yet I haven’t seen Red Cross Philly tweeting their thanks to Kate. If and when that happens I’m sure I’ll hear about it one way or another. That certainly won’t change my opinion of the picture being bad marketing nor will it change the fact that I did indeed speak with someone from their organization.

So all you bloggers and tweeters who get it and have been trying to explain to those who refuse to get it, thanks very much for defending my right to express my opinion! (I think that’s an appropriate use of an exclamation mark.) And again, thanks for reading.

"Free speech and all that."

Actually, "free speech and all that" doesn't apply. The First Amendment deals with the establishment of LAWS that abridge the right of free speech, among other things. It says absolutely nothing about individuals, organizations, or groups objecting to or preventing someone from expressing an opinion they find contrary to their beliefs or topics of discussion. So --Admin is perfectly within her rights to dictate what she wants discussed here and to remove anything she finds objectionable, and we are within our rights to snark on anyone we don't agree with. Polite -- not always. Right -- not always. Allowable legally -- always, as long as it doesn't move into libel.

Kate's picture is definitely in poor taste, both as "representing" an organization, and as something she would post in a public forum. I don't, however, agree with Admin that having celebrities pose with the Red Cross blankets is in poor taste. Most of the pix get the point across very well, and people are going to notice and respond to pictures featuring their favorite celebrities. Using photos of actual victims would, IMO, be exploitative.

It will be interesting to see if Kate changes the Red Cross picture because in her mind that would amount to admitting she's wrong and apologizing. Think about it, she has multiple speeding tickets, parks in the fire lane, berates her children in public, leaves them unattended in the BBB and allows Colin to crawl under the BBB. These incidents are all recent and she has never admitted she was at fault in any way. I'll wager that the executives at Coupon Cabin are doing a group face palm today.

I have to agree with Check please! and Dallas Lady.

I too am no fan of Kate, but the way that she is dissected here is a bit ridiculous.

It looks like the Red Cross asked a number of celebs to support a local Philly effort by posing in pictures with their blanket, and posting it online for a digital gallery to be compiled. It's a PR effort, not one that I think was well conceived, but it's just a PR campaign.

Kate is a lazy idiot. Kate only cares about herself. There usually aren't a lot of ulterior motives for many of the things she says or does. So when she does or says something, it likely will be whatever takes the least effort, something dumb and not thought-out, and/or something self-serving. That's it.

Incorrect info, I can read the web site. Not at all what I meant but you're welcome to think what you like.

Hi AnnaBanana, I'm with you, Check Please and Dallas Lady as well. Expressing less than a 100% negative opinion gets you a sheeple label a lot of the time. I've posted here a bit the last week or so, but mostly I don't and that's why.

Hang on, I wasn't saying she shouldn't be criticized for this. I was saying she's stupid and bone idle and probably didn't put a fraction of the thought into it that others are. That's all.

Admin,

Would you consider placing the pictures of Kate's vehicle parked in multiple fire lanes next to/under her 'come hither' RC blanket disaster? I think think it deserves emphasis.
As others have already said - what PR nightmare she is.

How long have we been saying this here? A long time! Kate doesn't think before she does anything. She is incapable to thinking long-term as to what the consequences may be for her action; who might be offended by her actions, or if there are any alternatives that she might pursue. She just can't do it. If this was Steve's idea, then he's just as dumb as she is and she needs to hire a new business manager.

I am a 30 yr veteran volunteer with the American Red Cross. I have worked with them since the Vietnam War when I was in my Nursing Training at Temple Univ Hospital in PHL. Started with volunteering time with the amputees at the PHL Naval Hospital. From there, went to CHI, KC, LAX, SFO, BWI...name the place and I was a volunteer. I ended my career as a Trainer after working with the Homeless Shelters, the Disaster Relief Group, even PR work. Name it and I was doing it. Everything from Blood Donations to calling folks for donations. I have a beautiful silver pin for my time. Now, due to retirement, I just contribute money and I designate the area I want my funds to go to, right here in Bucks County, PA where I live.

Kate Gosselin looks like many a person who during a fire of their home or a flood, is unprepared when leaving their home and we immediately place a blanket over them. Although Ms. Gosselin sits in a comfy chair within a very expensive house, the photo has grabbed notoriety. Due to her low cut, looking like she is in a slip? no shoes on?

At least she is wearing the blanket of the American Red Cross and causing quite a stir within your community. This is how I see it.

I am so proud of my years of volunteering, while I worked full time for all of those years, I still volunteered and I contributed money. I found time to train in the various areas.

Do not let that photo be anything but a way to attract attention to the American Red Cross. If she has to pose that way for her own ego, so be it.

The American Red Cross has taken so many hits over the years. I think I heard every complaint that someone heard from someone in WWII about the American Red Cross charging a nickel for a cigarette to GIs....but I say to all of you, please donate.

We have exhausted our funds and our blood donations due to all of the effects of Mother Nature over the past 5 years, beginning with Hurricane Katrina. Never have I seen so much tragedy in these United States as I have these past 5 years.

If you can't donate $$, then please donate a pint of blood.

The lives you may be saving are your own and those of your family.

For, if, you have a fire, flood, etc., The American Red Cross will be there. If you or your family member needs blood, we will provide, we only ask you replenish our supply.

Please don't let this photo be a deterent to donating to the American Red Cross.

I do not know how I feel about Ms. Gosselin's pose but I certainly appreciate her doing something to gain attention for the ARC.

Thank you.
Kate

Anonymous, thanks for the post and for your work with the RC. I'm glad if the controversy gets some donations. I was prepared to not donate any more to them, until I spoke with someone from the org. Hopefully minds were changed like mine was.

-----------

Sadly, it seems there are some other long-time lurkers or long-time posters who feel they cannot post a dissenting opinion without being attacked or labeled a "sheeple". I've had my personal experience with this.

This blog, at one time, had a welcoming atmosphere that allowed those with an opposing viewpoint to post their comments without any fear of backlash. A respectful discussion would exist. Sadly, it seems it has been a little hostile lately, since going unmoderated. Especially if some posters feel the need to use a different username or be anonymous for fear some will see them as "sheeple".

I don't visit other Gosselin blogs besides this one and occasionally preesi. The only Gosselin twitter feed I follow is the one posted above, occasionally looking at the expanded conversation related to specific Kate tweets. So when I make an opposing opinion based off my own personal experiences and information posted on this blog, I find it somewhat hurtful when some consider it "sheeple" thinking. "Sheeple" play no part in influencing my own opinion about various matters.

These different viewpoints broaden the discussion and enable this blog's readers to see many perspectives on the same issue. This was what made this blog great, as we were willing to hear all viewpoints, have a respectful debate or discussion, and not just side with anything that is anti-Kate.

I still enjoy this blog but it saddens me a little to see what's been happening lately.
