Is there hope for TLC in their new show about Southwest Airlines?

After a string of outrageously exploitive reality shows, many about children, TLC ventures into a tried and true concept--Southwest Airlines.

Will this be something actually worth watching?

http://articles.cnn.com/2011-11-17/travel/travel_southwest-reality-series_1_tlc-air-travel-holiday-travel-rush?_s=PM:TRAVEL

A&E's similar Airline reality show, which aired six years ago, was one of the best reality shows to ever be produced. It provided an honest look into a typical day at a busy airline. And the compassion and patience employees showed passengers even in very uncomfortable situations, endeared them to viewers.

In this clip, employees calmly deal with a drunk passenger, a passenger playing the race card, and a passenger with body odor. If only all reality shows could be so sensitive to their subjects:

We received the honor of naming you, baby Honey, and it was an easy pick because you were truly as sweet as Honey!

&&&&&&&

Pulling this over from the other thread. Correction, there was no "We" involved in naming Honey. Kate picked. Just Kate. Like Kate gets final say on everything, including naming the dogs.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

You were like a real life stuffed animal and were so perfect in every way!

&&&&&&&&&&&

I can't stand this. Honey is a wild koala bear who could hurt someone. WILD ANIMAL. That's why she's being released to the wild, she's wild! Not a stuffed animal, not some baby-kins baby poo--and it does her a disservice to treat her as such.

TLC has long taken successful show ideas from other channels and put their spin on them which includes, among other things, more drama.

I wonder who helped KT write the blog?

This twit is so damn dumb it's painful! Too bad Honey didn't wake up from the anesthesia and claw her eyes. Maybe then the bimbo would realize that a wild animal isn't a cuddly plaything.

It is just incredible how RUDE people are! I could never, ever treat someone like that. I travel a LOT and I could get mad. But why? Believe me, security overseas does not mess around. If you forgot a coin in your pocket, they will pull you aside and frisk you right there, very invasively, with no questions asked. If you have a tight connection and have to go through security again (also required overseas), invariably you will end up behind some clueless wonder that doesn't get it and can't get it together. Yelling at them isn't going to help them move. To go off on someone like that is just unthinkable. It's ironic that the guy who could have had the most to complain about (the BO guy) was the calmest and just accepted what was said. Wow! Thinking back, we've seen Kate act like this on just about every show, whether it's to her own kids or the skyjump guy or the guy who put his toolbox on the counter or Jon or anyone unfortunate enough to be in her path. I couldn't fathom it......

TLC is one big copycat. I saw the advertisements for DC cupcakes gal to be on "Say Yes to the Dress" and then they were televising the wedding plans. Also saw the ads for the Duggers European trip. Yuck. So I am not surprised that they are copying the A&E show with Southwest.

Well, thanks to Nobody Likes A Narcissist. I read on Preesi how you tracked down the Reading, PA hotel Kate did her Extra interview and had a luncheon meeting with the Coupon Cabin newbie hire there on the same day. Wonder if Steve was standing off to the side? Funny how the hotel is quiet about the interview.

And it's really funny how Kate wants the perception that she was whisked off to Chicago to Coupon Cabin when it's located in a rinky dink down in Indiana. I doubt she is making much money on this internet site. It's all about keeping her name out there. She must be living off the money she socked away. She's not poor....not by a long shot....but she is well on her way to depleting all she earned by the time those kids are ready for college if she doesn't get a regular (uh, mediocre) job.

Yes, TLC has copy catted a lot of shows from A&E. Remember a couple years back they had a show called "Addicted" which was essentially "Intervention". Then A&E came out with Hoarders, TLC has Hoardersa:Buried Alive. And A&E also had "Obsession" to which TLC replied with "My Strange Addiction"

I have a question though, wasn't this Airline show on A&E on around the same time they had Dallas Swatt on? That was a great show until one of the officers got into trouble with a prostitute and that was the end of the show.

I wonder who helped KT write the blog?

No one. It's garbage. Very poorly written, long sentences with no structure and this:

"...while your mommy lay on the operating table having surgery on her injuries caused by a car who had hit her.

A car isn't referred to as "who."

Her usage of ellipses is incorrect. There should be no space and the next word shouldn't be capitalized. And she uses an exclamation mark to end every sentence.

Ugh!

Tucker's Mom said...

Kate has more compassion for Honey than any of her kids, ever; the one boy whose anus was painful and the other who was puking and feverish when Kate put him on a cold, hard floor in a noisy, dark room. How about the boy tup who whacked his head in the airplane and somehow this is God's justice? That bang could be heard 2 counties over and Kate didn't even check to see if he was OK.
If Honey was one of Kate's kids, she would have pointed out at least 2 flaws.

Making the sentence even worse is the passive phrase "caused by a car." Rewrite and revise, Katie. Split the run-on sentence and remove the passive tense. Better yet, leave writing to the writers. It's not easy to pull something together that reads well. It takes WORK. Maybe you should go back to something you do well, like acting, dancing, and being a talk show host. Oh, wait... :D

I'm willing to give TLC a try with its new show, since I enjoyed "Airline" so much the few times I saw it. It told a story, I thought.

But the minute they start showing the worst side of humanity, or children behaving badly, or in any way exploiting the people they catch on film, I'm done. No stressed mommies having to change dirty diapers on camera, please. We can know it's happening without having to watch it.

TLC, in my opinion, tends to go more for the drama rather than just watching a story unfold. That's what happened with Jon and Kate Plus 8. They dropped the story in order to fill time with bad behavior.

Actually, now that I think about it, Kate's attitude is that writing is just throwing words on paper and adding exclamation points to make it exciting. It's as insulting to those who work at the craft of writing as her idea that she'd be good at voice overs without training. Or that, also without training, she could be in television or movies. Or that she could step into a journalist's shoes on a talk show. It's not only delusional, it's insulting to those who work hard to become good at what they do.

We won't even mention her Super Mom persona--Sport said a while back it was insulting to mothers who really put their kids first. Amen to that.

What about all of the animals who are injured by cars in her own country? She doesn't seem to give diddly squat about them, I reckon because that gets her no media attention. She can walk in any zoo in THIS country and see injured animals on operating tables, but these zoos aren't going to have auctions to eat lunch with her and have her handprints immortalized in cement.

She goes where the attention and adoration is. And that's the bottom line.

Well, if Kate really cared about animals she would have gone to the shelter to adopt a dog in need, not to a breeder for a purebred (image) dog.
Course, if she really cared about animals she would have read all about having a dog before getting her kids invested in puppies and then taking them away.
Or, if she really cared about animals, she would have monitored her dog around her chickens. She would have made sure that her chickens were secure and safe and that HER dog stayed out if she believed he was a danger to them.
Kinda like how if she really cared for her kids she would have kept them OFF tv, would keep quiet about their father when interviewed, and would get OUT of the van to pick them up instead of Twittering away.
But, the may have come to an end if those things happened. Never know.

Off-topic but related to children in the entertainment industry:

Molester helped cast child actors
News that a registered sex offender worked under another name raises questions for studios and police. - LA Times

Summary of article:
Jason James Murphy, a register sex offender convicted of molesting and kidnapping a young boy, worked on casting child actors for movies such as "Super 8", [new] "The Three Stooges", "Bad News Bears", "The School of Rock", and "Cheaper By The Dozen 2". Although he registered as a sex offender in California, his prior convictions went unnoticed because he worked under the professional name of Jason James and did not register that alias.

After serving his sentence and receiving counseling for sex offenders, Murphy pursued a career in film and television - using an alias to work in casting child actors.

Pamela Fisher, who heads the youth division at Abrams Artists Agency in Los Angeles, which is not affiliated with J.J. Abrams, said she has worked extensively with the man she knew as Jason James. She said he helped her line up auditions for young clients. As recently as Wednesday, Fisher said, Murphy sent her an email "looking for 12-year-olds for a USC student film."

"I had no idea. I'm completely shocked," Fisher said Thursday. "We've worked together over the years on many projects and had a lot of contact. He's always been very professional, and there was never any reason to think there would ever be a problem with projects where my clients were auditioning."
[LA Times]

Although no reports of inappropriate behavior have been reported, Twentieth Century Fox studios will conduct an investigation and Paramount is planning on changing its employee screening process. "Moving forward, we … will also conduct background checks on all freelance employees, full time and part time, who work with minors on our productions," the studio said. [LA Times]

Regarding the dog. The dog is a photo op prop. I don't believe for one minute the dog killed the chickens. If I owned a dog that killed domestic birds (and I have owned a dog), I wouldn't keep the dog around with small children. The other questionable thing about the dog is this. That's a lot of dog to keep around a lot of kids without an authority figure. No way do I believe Katie is the authority figure with that much dog. The authority figure must be Steve-O. I don't need to hear from a bunch of posters, who have totally bonded with their dog and have complete control. This situation is different. There is no bonding, and without that sense of control in the dog, there is the potential for problems.

I wonder if the "visitor" felt this way toward Kate when she used to correct Jon all of the time. Or, is this one of those instances where it's ok for Kate to correct people, but you must not do the same to her.

WHEN it comes out that she has been in a long term relationship with Skeve ( oops, that was a typo ), I bet a million coupons that the people who slammed Jon for cheating will give Kate a free pass on being a homewrecker. "She needs a husband. She has 8 kids to feed. Give her a break. Poor Kate."

Regarding the dog: a guard dog may or not attack chickens, depends on how it was raised. Most guard dogs are raised not to intermingle with family, they are there to watch. So attacking the chickens, could be, cause the dog was not fed enough, or saw the chickens as invaders/intruders. A family guard dog, lives in the house, and should be monitor when with children. A 3rd type of watch dog is the family dog who lives in the house, barks when it hears any noise and might attack an intruder(depends on how loyal/bonded that dog is to you). My dogs are the 3rd kind(house dogs), they would only allow other people in the house if I'm there or the dogs know you. And even then, I would be very careful. My dogs do wrestle/play with each other and do get carried away and I have to intervene. My dogs are fine around birds, I have 4 birds, my dogs pretty much ignore them(probably cause their in cages, no threat). Kates dog is between the first and second guard dog type. Though if the dog killed some chickens, I would, be monitoring that dog around the children and guests. That dog is more likely to bite. I hope Kate has signs up saying: Beware of dog.

Pity Party said...

KT seemed to take the news of the dog killing "8" chickens exceedingly well. I just never put much credence in that story. It would have been the bloodletting from hell. Mama said once a dog tastes blood it will kill again and again. There seems to be no problem with him going after the second set of chickens. That is not to say the chickens didn't die - just - well you know.

And Kate and Steve will hit the talk shows saying things like - "We never meant to fall in love." "The heart wants what it wants." "Kate is the ideal woman for me." "Steve is the perfect man for me." BARF.

Then, shortly afterward, we will hear about how Kate 'miraculously' became pregnant with the one baby she always wanted. We will then hear things like - "I never thought I'd be a father again." "This baby is a miracle to us both." "The kids are so excited to meet their new brother or sister." DOUBLE BARF.

But the minute they start showing the worst side of humanity, or children behaving badly, or in any way exploiting the people they catch on film, I'm done.
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

I think you hit the nail on the head, fidosmommy. The new show is a remake. TLC execs are probably thinking about all the great and nasty ways they could have pushed A&E's to the edge in terms of showing folks in their most unpleasant moments. In TLCs eyes, this remake will be an improvment, more "gritty" and they probably think their are 'taking it up a notch'. Meaning they will focus on the hysteria, the bawdy, the shrieking, the apparent mental illness. First thing Monday morning, a staff of writers will start drafting ways of egging on and setting-up every out of control person or general wackadoodle they think they spot walking through a concourse.

Be careful watching it, dear fidosmommy. They will start by barely meeting your standards and then week after week they will gradually LOWER your standards and find ways (through media attention) to reassure you that it is really important for you to watch this show.

And I will mention that Kreider woman any time I want to. Thank you. :)))

&&&&&&&&&&&&

This is so scary. If there's anything that has become apparent this year, it's that these child molesters and pedophiles, at least the more sophisticated ones, seek out socially acceptable places to live and work in which they will have great access to a lot of children.

And also, many are darn good at covering up their misdeeds.

I think if all those people who were felt picked on or whatever because they couldn't get on their flights...do they not think about how other people might feel? Their spectacles should be embarrassing! Playing the racist and from the street card is really lame folks.

News tip: the airport isn't out to get you! Sure it's a hassle but if you're polite and accept a few incidences beyond working people's control it might go a little smoother for you.

It's like Kate and her going through airport, she has to make walking through an airport a big ordeal or attention getter. What, do some people just live to seek attention?

I wanted to comment on this. He may very well be able to afford soap. But his body odor may not have been about that. His demeanor suggested he was not self-aware, he was detached, he was withdrawn. A person with poor hygiene isn't alway that way because they cannot afford soap. It's often because there is some kind of mental illness or mental impairment that is either depressing them so much they don't care about their appearance, or care to take care of themselves, or somehow interfering with their perception of normal societal norms such that they are not aware everyone else smells a lot better, that everyone else is changing their clothes and has better hygiene.

While I have every faith that there are many people there with pure hearts who truly do love animals and want what is best for animals, I think the true mission of the zoo is PROFIT, at all costs. If that means lying about an animal's true nature, allowing interactions with animals that are dangerous and cruel (i.e. the constant croc teasing for starters) gathering any D-list celeb they can find to help promote it, and exploit the heck out of two young children who deserve more of a life than running a circus act, then so be it.

The original A&E Airline showed caring, compassionate employees who worked their way through all kinds of problems. It was a great show. Kind of restored your faith in human nature, knowing that there were employees who went above and beyond what was required of them.

The question is - will TLC do the same, or will the focus be on showing travelers at their worst, scripted and faked? Time will tell.

Yes. To me the hook of Airline was not the people behaving badly, but how good people dealt with those behaving badly. It sort of sent a message no matter how awful the ether person is being, keep your head, keep your cool, show them kindness. And it was good business sense.

A lot of times? The Southwest employees were able to diffuse the situation. Their kill 'em with kindness mantra really worked.

I guess a lot of viewers don't want to see the other party being kind and calming things down. They prefer both parties ping and pong back and forth getting madder and madder more drama more yelling and screaming. And yet I found this fascinating--how to deal with this kind of out of control behavior. The show was cancelled quickly.

It may seem like no big deal to say my kids/our kids, whatever. And usually it shouldn't be if you say both.

But when Kate is always saying MY kids, especially in conversations that invoke Jon, it further alienates him from his children. It invokes an "us vs. him" mentality. You're either with mommy or against mommy. It's all of us, and then there is Daddy. A child should never be made to feel like they have been recruited to team Mommy or team Daddy. They should never feel like there's so much animosity that there are literally teams and enemies.

Words are powerful and they can be very damaging to a child.

Interesting thread -- I just want to make a few coments.

I won't be watching the new "Airport" show. As long as TLC continues to exploit children, particularly with that odious "Toddlers and Tiaras" show, I've banned it from my house. Darn it, because I do enjoy "What Not to Wear".

B.O. isn't always caused by poor hygiene. Certain medications, medical problems, and even diet can cause an offensive odor. A person with B.O. may not even be aware of it, unless someone points it out to him/her. Your nose tends to get used to odors -- for example, you may not smell your own perfume, but it may be overwhelming to someone else.

Just Me -- the school that had the ballboys come forward about abuse is Syracuse. The article I read indicated that the coach accused had been put on immediate suspension, pending the outcome of the police investigation. Apparently, according to the article I read, it was originally reported in 2005 or 2006 but nothing came of it because the statute of limitations had run out (??!!).

When I posted my gratitude list yesterday, I made a HUGE omission. I'm thankful for our military and for the first responders who put their lives on the line so that we can be safe. To Butterfly and FireChicksKickAsh -- thank you for your service and your sacrifices.

I believe what Marie was asking is if Kate's strange pronunciation is common in the region, not necessarily that she is Pennsylvania Dutch. If you live around the Pennsylvania Dutch, and in the area, chances are you will pick up some of the dialect. I've written several genealogical research papers on the descendants of the immigrants from southwestern Germany and Switzerland, and their settlements throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. These are the PA Dutch (it has nothing to do with Dutch or Holland). Many of them came from Switzerland as well as Germany.

Pennsylvania Dutch encompasses not only the Mennonites, but the Amish as well, and within each of those groups are many sects, each having its own beliefs and customs.

Kreider descendants are of German origin; specifically, Bavaria. I have a few of them in my family, but as far as I know, I am not related to her. Then again, I wouldn't admit it if I were!
