Recap: Kate Plus 8 "A Decade of Kate" and "The Big FOUR Oh!": Kate wouldn't dream of not taking the kids, until she dreams it

Coming up on Kate turns 40 and she's old now ðŸ˜‚😂😂 .....

But first, before the oh-so-monumental episode in which like every other 40-year-old-woman before her, Kate turns 40, TLC shows a whopping three-hour recap of the entire last ten years of the show, narrated by a male voice. Three hours! I watched the whole thing for the recap, and not ten seconds of this massive beast was at all meaningful or necessary. The narrator sounds like maybe that Extreme Couponing guy. I keep waiting for him to announce, "Kate's amassed a four-walled, floor to ceiling stockpile worth over $30,000 dollars!"

Turns out this truly is a look-back, with absolutely nothing new, not even a new couch interview from Kate, which I guess we should be grateful for. All her yammering on explaining away and re-writing history during clip shows gets really old. Just like Kate, old! Of course a lot of the old clips they show I didn’t really much remember it's been so long, so I’ll just highlight a few that stood out, especially knowing what we know now.

  • Collin was one of the last babies to go home from the hospital, along with Joel. This is significant to me for two reasons. One is that he and Joel had the toughest time getting going when they were premies, which can be a risk factor a child will develop special needs. The other is that Collin certainly lost out on crucial bonding time with his parents the other children were getting, which can also be a risk factor for special needs. As it is, by virtue of there being six babies I think they were all at risk for not getting enough bonding time with their parents even if their parents were perfect. Interestingly enough, Kate describes Collin as laid back, and the biggest child. I always saw him as generally laid back anytime we've seen him on film, so the idea ole Kate here couldn't handle him in the family home was always hard to believe.
  • Kate's terrible makeup job back in the day, yeesh. That blush makes her look like a domestic violence victim. She often doesn't even have it placed on her cheeks evenly, channeling Tom Hanks from toward the end of Philadelphia.
  • The mind games Kate played with toddlers surely has to have affected them later. For instance, allowing them to take a piece of chocolate from a park worker, then immediately turning around and forcing them to give the chocolate to her, Kate, to be eaten later because it will melt. A toddler doesn't understand that! That's way too complicated for them! Give me back the chocolate now for safe keeping to eat later because it will melt in your hand now? That's like Harvard for a toddler. If you must do this take-back to such a young child, don't give them the chocolate in the first place, take it directly from the worker yourself for safe keeping for later. At least then the chocolate won't have to be taken from the toddler after they actually got to hold it for a moment. Naturally a few of the toddlers end up hysterical over this. Sigh, these little ones know it's no guarantee they're seeing that treat ever again.
  • It's nice that Jon is shown a lot during the old clips, as he was as involved with these kids as Kate and arguably much more involved. There is a sweet moment where he teases Cara after her cooking class, warmly placing his hand on her shoulder and telling her, "You didn't save me some cake? What kind of chef are you?" Cara looks up at him with such a loving little grin. These kids adored their dad and he them, and Kate sabotaged that special relationship, and that's a fact.
  • Kate's trip to I think Wyoming with the three boys is the only time in the history of the show I can remember her doing something with just the three boys. If someone can remember any other time I'd love to know. It's embarrassing and pathetic that horse trainers have to give her lengthy and specific instructions to please not scream on or around the horses as it freaks them out. Kate laughs this all off of course, which makes me mad. A close family friend of ours was killed in 2004 when a horse got spooked for unknown reasons and kicked her neck (she was bending down to clean its hoof). It's not funny, Kate. Horses are gentle animals but huge and skittish, which means many people have been hurt or killed by horses who, though they weren't trying to hurt anyone, got freaked out over something and accidentally did so. Interestingly enough, there was a successful campaign from many folks to plead with the barn to not put the horse down over my friend's death, and they didn't. Us family and friends generally supported that decision and still do. He wasn't trying to hurt her and she wouldn't have wanted him killed over this. To top this all off Kate whizzes around on an ATV without a helmet. Kate's just an idiot and very, very oblivious.
  • Now here's some really interesting insight into how Kate handled a child who has special needs. She remarks that Collin, and Hannah, like to play by themselves. How interesting that the two independent (and perhaps more free-thinking) children are the first two to leave Kate. She then laughs as she remarks that she doesn't understand when the children complain they have no one to play with. A sibling is a wonderful and special relationship but the children are craving friendships and other social interaction with peers outside the family. She doesn't get it, but it's actually not good enough to simply stick a sibling in front of a kid and tell them to go play and expect that to meet all their social needs. These kind of complaints from the kids suggest they in fact were not getting enough social interaction outside the family unit and were craving more of it. It suggests Kate was lazy about their social development, and ignorant, and again, this can contribute to a child developing special needs.
  • The boys swim trunks are at least three sizes too large while the girls' suits fit them perfectly. Not only do they look ridiculous and pathetic, but cheaping out on swim clothes can be dangerous. All that extra fabric can make it harder for the child to float and swim. Get them trunks that fit for god sakes, you cow.
  • Don't you just want to strangle Kate and her terrible command of the English language? Why is it "ironic" that the show arranged for a trip to Alaska and Alaska is on their wish list of places to go? That's not what irony means! Irony does not mean a coincidence!
  • I've since been to Australia myself in 2015, including the Australia Zoo, and so seeing the footage now of the Gosselin trip there I have a pretty neat context for everything. What really stood out to me was the family's trip occurred during a persistent drizzle. Having been there I know that zoo is so exposed, with long, long open walks between exhibits. That's good, that means the animals are given lots of space in their enclosures. But it sure sounds like a miserable trip in the rain. I don't like zoos in general, but for what it was I found the whole thing to be clean, laid out well, and very appealing. Here's a photo I took of one of the kangaroos in the enclosure. They really do let you get right up close and pet and feed them just like Steve Irwin did.

And here's the incredible, gorgeous beach we stayed at near the zoo called Dicky Beach. That's an old shipwreck that was there that they've since removed and placed in a museum. When people ask was Australia worth it, I tell them well it's a nice place but it's an awful lot of money for an American to spend to go so far to see some exotic animals in their natural habitat. I was working there, so I was very, very fortunate to have my expenses covered. But, I will say if you like beaches, go. The beaches are just fantastic, as you can see. I don't think the Gosselin episode in Australia really captured the beauty whatsoever that I saw on that continent.

  • My God, I forgot this comment from the Mother's Day episode but Kate says she always is asking herself why she was "chosen" to have twins and sextuplets. LMAO, she's coo-coo! She's not an Israelite wandering in the desert. She went to a fertility doctor and got too many eggs implanted and they almost all fertilized. No "choosing" involved other than her own very questionable choices when it comes to her own reproduction. What is wrong with this woman? Also I don't believe a doctor told her she would never have kids. I think she's Kate being dramatic. That is an extremely rare thing to say to a woman nowadays, especially a woman only in her 20's. Basically you're only told that if you have no uterus. The technology is so good now and has been for awhile that statistics show most woman have a very, very high likelihood of having a biological child if they want to, though you may need fertility treatments.
And that wraps up the long and pointless recap show. Good news is, Kate has been getting even older as we suffered through this. Now onto the big 4-0!

Coming up, the family is going to Mexico for Kate's 40th. I predict a lot of offensive Mexican stereotypes ahead. Mady says Kate is constantly talking about how she's 40 now and it gets annoying. Mady's right, Kate fixates. Whatever it is on her little pea brain at the moment, it's all she wants to talk about. Whether it's her divorce, or dating, or organic food, or running, or turning 40, she goes through these cycles where there's nothing else playing but that one track. It's annoying enough when you're just watching her yammering on TV or social media, it must be hell to live with.

Deanna and Andrea are over at the house putting up badly clashing decorations. Haven't seen those two young ladies in awhile have we?! Do Deanna and Andrea not understand how to twist two steamers together? It looks like a first grader did this job, it's terrible. Maybe they don't care.

Kate was "invited" by Generations resorts in Mexico to spend three days and nights there and she "jumped at the chance." Ha, I bet that heifer did. The days of a resort offering her a free stay are probably long gone now, but it's true that many resorts do do this for celebrities. It's worth it to them to get some paparazzi photos taken at their resort and develop a reputation for hosting celebs, almost free publicity. They even would put offers like these in Oscar gift bags. You have to pay the taxes on the stay and figure out how to get yourself there, but Kate could probably swing it so production covers that. In fact I'm wondering if this offer wasn't really exclusive to her at all but just something found in a swag bag she picked up somewhere. The most shocking thing I discovered working for a celeb is that the richer you are, the more freebies you get. It can get to the point where half your expenses are freebies or heavily discounted. At the time, iPods were the big freebie thing, and celeb had amassed about six of them in the span of as many months. It was insane, especially for someone like me from a little town back east who at the time had never even known someone who had an iPod much less so many you couldn't even hold them all at once.

In any case, bring on the Mexican stereotypes! They have a bunch of plastic sombreros out everywhere and they're setting the table with a Mexican theme which I guess in Kate's head means sombreros and lots of clashing bright colors. Right on the money.

Kate tells the kids this is a send-off party for she and Deanna to go to Mexico alone. So, you tell little kids you're going to leave them again with sitters for days on end while you go off and have all the fun in another country, and this is funny? There really is something wrong with this woman. Sure enough, Hannah is downright mad Kate won't be there when she wakes up for school, and Leah bursts into tears! My god, will Kate end the prank already now that children are sobbing? (She won't. She blows this off as the kids just being dramatic teenagers. Right, a kid who would prefer their mom be around for their lives in dramatic. Flipping tool.) What is her obsession with tricking or surprising the kids about trips? Why not just tell them from the beginning they're going and give them some time to build up some fun excitement about it? She prefers sobs and anger to tickled as pink kids who are thrilled for weeks on end leading up to the trip? Again, something is wrong with her. It's no surprise a kid like Hannah realized she prefers to live with Jon. Eventually you get tired of the emotional manipulation.

We have talked a ton on this blog about Kate's mental state and the terribly nasty things she does to others, including her own children. As Concerned Aussie just posted recently, "She's never seemed to have any foresight in her relentless pursuit of revenge and the limelight and her mental deterioration has been evident over the last few seasons. Now though, I think it's clear she really is evil, an it's getting harder for her to hide it."

All I would say to that is it's clear she was evil a long time ago and this little prank she played on her own children proves it.

Leah lets slip on the couch that Kate is never around and here she is about to take off again, and I'm sure that's just about true around this time period. This was Kate's heyday when she really was traveling the country, spending a heck of a lot of time in New York getting her hair and nails done, and going off to L.A. for whatever and all that nonsense. It is obviously totally believable to the kids she would take off on them again to another country in the middle of the school year, and that speaks volumes. Kate deserves that comment slipping from Leah. Had she never played this cruel prank on the poor kids, Leah never would have let slip her mother is not around. Bam.

It doesn't surprise me someone like Kate is solely focused on the fact that she is now 40 and single instead of in her 30's and single, because she's one of those insecure and old-fashioned women who still thinks a woman's self worth is defined by her relationship. I haven't heard her say a single positive thing about this milestone birthday, what a drag she is to listen to. Mady says she needs to shut up and this is all about Kate knowing darn well she doesn't look 40 but loving to tell everyone she is 40 for that very reason, and no truer words were said. Mady's got her pegged. Kate's one of those women who gets herself all skinny and toned and dolled out in a beautiful outfit for some fun event and then tells everyone she is fat and ugly and waits for the compliments to flow. Yep. I kind of think Kate does actually look all of 40, she looks exactly her age, but that's not the point. The point is that Mady is right, Kate doesn't think she looks 40 and loves to show this off.

Kate gradually seems to realize this prank is not funny, especially after some of the kids have stormed off to their rooms to sob. Um, so anyone else could have understood this was a bad idea before she ever even started. Why didn't Deanna tell her this was a bad idea, or Andrea? Are they this much in Kate's back pocket? So Kate tells them the truth and the kids are happy but the emotional damage is done.

Lol, the terribly strung streamers in the back as Kate lies and said it was never a thought in her mind to not bring the kids on this her second trip to Mexico. Right, just like the first time she went to Mexico  in 2010 with Steve for "work" and didn't bring the kids.

I'm really realizing now how terrible Kate is as describing things, which probably plays a huge role in why she's never really made it on any kind of spin-off like a cooking show where you really do have to be able to speak. The extent of her description of the outright gorgeous Mexican resort right on the sparkling clear aqua water is, wait for it.... "oh my gosh." I'm not kidding.

It looks like they're heading straight from the airport shuttle to go snorkel with turtles. That's an amazing activity, but did they at least get a nap and some food or anything first? This can't have been an easy travel day.

Deanna, who is only slightly better at describing things than Kate, says they saw a beautiful corral reef. Wait, what? Why didn't they show that on film? I only saw a few turtles. Stupid.

The kids hit up a marketplace that is all just touristy junk, which unfortunately, is on every corner in Mexico. You have to go pretty far off the beaten path to get yourself some really great authentic finds, and that's not advisable for Americans to really do right now. Oh, this is a shopping trip for Kate's birthday present? I thought this was for the kids. Figures. At only 200 pesos each to spend, some of the kids are struggling to buy what they really want for Kate. Poor Collin looks really bummed he can't afford the 550 pesos bear figurine he wants to get. Has it occurred to the kids if they pooled their money they could get Kate something really fantastic? Apparently not. Maybe Deanna or Andrea could help them by suggesting this? Don't hold your breath. The twins finally figure it out and pool their money with one of the younger girls.

Collin is somehow able to negotiate getting the bear he wants for a flat 200 pesos, and he's blown away with gratitude. "Thank you, thank you, oh my god," sweet little Collin says. Awww. Yeah, stay tuned on this one.

Also, if something is listed for 550 pesos and you're willing to chop off a whopping 350 pesos from the sticker price (about 18 bucks), doesn't that suggest this is all really just junk meant to bilk tourists for whatever money they have in their pocket? Sigh. I'm glad to see the kids happy to shop, but I wish someone was teaching them how to be more discerning while traveling, find the good stuff, the gems, and avoid cheap-o tourist traps like these on vacations.

The Mayan ruins wouldn't let them film for reasons nobody explains. Well boo-hoo! I take great joy in this for some reason. Screw this show and their entitlement thinking they can just go wherever and film whatever they like. They have to film this excursion on their iphones, which really seems like breaking the rules if they intend to use the iphone footage on their show anyway, which they do. Can Mexico sue?

Is this all still the same day, their first day off their flight? I'm not familiar with this place. Is the market, sea turtles and Mayan ruins all in the same vicinity? This trip looks just exhausting so far.

The next day it's Mud Buggy driving on ATVs. Looks just awesome, and just expensive. You can predict Kate doesn't enjoy any of this at all and complains the whole way. If Deanna is slightly more descriptive than Kate, the kids are slightly more descriptive than Deanna: It was a dirt road, and muddy.

Andrea is an awesome nanny. She is having fun, engaging the kids, and driving through the biggest puddles. It's criminal she doesn't seem to be around anymore. Now that's what a nanny should be: fun, funny, adventurous, encouraging. See Tiggy Legge-Burke, the patron saint of modern nannies. The little princes put on their wellies and grabbed their fishing rods under her watch, spending countless hours along the river at the nanny's home in Wales. No doubt she played a huge role in how well-adjusted they turned out after the tragedy of their mother's death and their unusual upbringing. Tiggy didn't much approve of things like movies and tennis, she thought the boys were better off doing something that would make them muddy, and she was right. She had moved on before Diana's death clearly in part because Diana didn't like her and it was causing too much conflict, but when Diana died, it was Tiggy Charles called, asking her to come back and help him with the boys. And she did exactly that for a couple more years until about the time William graduated from high school. Her son was in William's wedding years later.

Despite the tension between her and Princess Diana, I think Diana would have been grateful for the love and support and fun Tiggy gave the boys during terribly sad times.

I really don't like how slow Kate is driving and how she says she doesn't want to drive recklessly. Even some guy who works there complains. I'm sure the cars and track are made such that it's almost impossible to do anything that would hurt you. Good grief, she's one big killjoy as per the usual. Kate finally gets it together and drives like a real person, flying through the mud and making Cara happy. Kate can stop with the timid I'm such a safe driver act because we know for a fact she's such a lead-foot on the roads she once amassed four speeding tickets in two years, one for hitting almost 90 mph! God, her constant act is obnoxious and no one believes it.

After a whirlwind day yesterday, apparently the racetrack is all they did today because suddenly it's nighttime and Kate's ditched the kids and gone out on the town with Deanna. Deanna is 40, too? Geez, she acts like she's all of 26 and, like, uh, ya know, a millennial. Coulda fooled me. Seems like by 40 you would have learned how to twirl two streamers together nicely or at least know how to look up how to do it. Why is Deanna acting like by age 40 you're basically invisible as a woman and must retire yourself to the attic to knit and that she's such a strong and powerful feminist she will be able to overcome all this? So dramatic, self-fulfilling, and in my view a pretty inaccurate description of the state of women in the world, unless you're in Hollywood (even then, that's getting better).

They head to Sur Steakhouse, and my first thought was you've got to be kidding me, they're going to Lisa Vanderpump's restaurant, a British woman? But turns out Sur Playa del Carmen isn't associated with Lisa at all and is supposedly owned by locals.

Some interesting truth comes out that Kate actually initially planned this whole trip with just Deanna, no kids. Just like her prank on the kids. Wait, I thought she wouldn't dream of going on this trip without the kids. Heh. In fact that's not true, per her own admission she sure did dream it, and only planned for the kids to come later as an afterthought. More than likely, because production wanted to make an episode. Tool, and liar.

Deanna goes into some meandering diatribe about how she used to think she and Kate needed a man in their life (like, to share, or they each get a man?), then they start trolling the venue for available hunks, and I think Deanna's a terrible role model for Kate's kids and wouldn't want her around any kids at all much less these vulnerable kids who are going to be messed up enough from Kate.

Kate's goals are for the kids to grow up and be best friends with each other. Well, when you ostracize certain ones and call them liars, that's unlikely, Kate.

I cannot imagine eating an entire dinner out with these two dimwits. What a mind-numbing experience. Their stupid conversation consists of dating, being defensive about dating and all their other lame choices that they think were good ones that in fact has left them both single and alone, yammering on about a divorce that was five years ago, patting themselves on the back for what wonderful strong women they are apparently seeing no irony in all the man trolling they did all night, and drinking overpriced fruity drinks with leaves in them. When Kate is with Deanna she forgets she has eight kids? Huh? She would like to forget this? Why? She's unbelievable. I can see enjoying a night out not having to parent eight kids constantly, but to forget you even have them is kind of a weird thought.

Can I say something about being single and alone? I've been there and done that, I did it for a long time well into my thirties, and it was fine, it was something I needed to go through before I could give myself fully to a man and be the best that I could be as a woman. But around about the time I was ready to find my forever relationship and stop with this dating crap, I found it very detrimental to be around other single women. Toxic even, especially when those women were bitter and angry about being alone and single. It would make me bitter and angry, and I knew I'd never find someone in that state of mind. No, I needed to be around women who had found their other half, who knew how to do it and what to look for, and who would be encouraging and give me good advice. I needed role models who were living out what I wanted. I needed women who believed what I wanted was out there. He was. Point being, I think Kate thinks Deanna is a wonderful friend and support to her. But I think Deanna has actually been harmful to Kate, does not give her good advice or encouragement when it comes to relationships, because I realize now Deanna too is forty, single and bitter. You know who would have been better best friends to latch onto all these years during this post-divorce era? Beth and Jodi.

It's Kate's 40th birthday out, Kate calling it one of the most memorable nights in a long time, and it's just her and some dolt of a friend she met not a few years ago who's super bitter and gives bad advice. No family, like sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews, parents. No husband or boyfriend you love, no life-long friends or at least long-term friends, just one co-worker who doesn't even live in the same state. At the end of the day, watching this all is actually quite sad. But as they say, you reap what you sow.

No, TLCgo app, I do not nor will I ever want to watch any show called Dr. Pimple Popper.

They spend forever showing the kids swimming in a giant hamster ball. Then Joel, Aaden, Hannah and Leah go off with Andrea to make cakes in what looks like a kids' baking class place. They never explain why the other kids didn't go but they went to the beach with Kate and Deanna. Weird. You guessed it, boys vs girls competition for best Kate cake. Typical. It's just one birthday for one person, doesn't it make more sense to team up together and make one really great cake for her? Grr.

Later I guess they're having a party with the kids now. In a rare occurrence, Kate compliments both cakes very nicely with specific and sincere comments, and the boys are so proud of themselves, which is sweet. Kate didn't even do anything that makes me want to strangle her like pick a "winner" or something. I'm shocked.

Someone says something about how "Mom" won't want them to eat all this sugar but I can't tell who. Mady, who has a mean streak the size of Texas, says the cakes looked like crap and she couldn't eat them out of self-respect. Where are the adults to make her stop with such cruel and inappropriate comments about her siblings? The cakes were just fine for an 11 year old, but even if they weren't, you don't have to be so nasty. I don't care if she doesn't want to eat it, but there is no reason to be hurtful.

The kids start giving Kate the gifts they bought and Kate is so excited and appreciative until she gets to Collin's bear.

Collin tells her it's supposed to represent himself and Kate, which is adorable, and you can armchair psychology that one pretty easily. In front of Collin, Kate says "Ohhh" as if she doesn't like the gift, and demands to know where the other seven cubs are. Wth? Kate, I doubt Mexico sells a bear figurine with eight bear cubs! She then calls the gift "off the wall" on the couch, which it wasn't at all. No more off the wall than that weirdo turtle container some other kid gave her where the lid is the shell. What are you supposed to put in such a stupid thing? I know many viewers found this segment just downright outrageous, but the editors cut so quickly out of it we're spared Collin's reaction. I hope the little guy wasn't too hurt by all this, but it would be hard not to be. Remember when he found out he scored the bear? "Oh my god, thank you!" I also think when comparing the bear incident to the cruel prank she played on the kids making them think she was leaving them to go to Mexico without them, they are both equally terrible things to say to her children.

The titles of these episodes are usually stupid and uninteresting, but this time I wonder if that "oh" in the Big Four-Oh title was a play on Kate's stupid "ohhh" when she saw Collin's gift. That would be unusually creative of the editors, but who knows.

Kate goes back to being over the top excited over the rest of the children's gifts. Blech.

Kate gives an awkward speech to someone, not sure who, about how she feared her birthday was going to be just another day with the same old same old. Okay, well that's not our problem. If you want a 40th birthday trip to a foreign country, then plan it yourself. Go online to Orbitz and book some flights and hotels. Deanna said she was game for it, and the kids wanted to go. I don't understand why this was TLC's problem or anyone else's problem to figure out. Kate's lucky she got this trip thrown into her lap after being so helpless about the situation. Has anyone read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, a modern self-help classic? I would almost call it a philosophy book more than anything else, and it's extremely highly regarded. Kate basically violates every single habit all the time, but one of the habits is that you don't just sit around passively letting problems happen to you. You go out there and fix things before they even break. What I'm saying is I have no sympathy for Kate here thinking this birthday was going to be so sad when she could have had something fun planned ages ago. Kate was pathetic and waited for 40 to happen to her, instead of grabbing 40 by the horns and making something great out of it. And I'm highly suspicious the reason she didn't plan anything is she was holding out on TLC to pay, so I also find her trite. (The Seven Habits author also believes strongly in what he calls "abundance mentality," which is what we've talked about so much here, that just because another person is "winning" doesn't mean you're losing, that there is no such thing as a fixed pie or rarely so. Kate disregards that one, too, pretty much constantly, and to her detriment.)

At the end of this all I find it sad that Kate is clearly saying this was the best birthday ever because she got to go on such a fantastic free trip. Sure, fantastic trips are wonderful on birthdays and all don't get me wrong (I went to Italy for my 30th, not for free though), but it is not the trip that makes the birthday, it's doing such an amazing thing with family and friends you love. Even if it's a day trip to the next town, it doesn't matter so much where you go. Kate does not get this, of that I'm sure. She admits she brought the kids along as an afterthought, remember? And now there's just one episode left, another birthday episode this time of the Tups, of the long and painful SEASON THREE of this terrible, terrible show.

Ooh, wouldn't TFW will a lovely mother-in-law?

I kind of wonder if Mady will go to college...she always said she didn't like school and Cara was the smart one.Maybe she will try for that acting career she said she wanted. TFW always thought the twins should get into modelling or acting/music. Remember the time TFW had the kids singing in the car? And when the modelling agency rejected the twins?

I mean 'Ooh, wouldn't TFW BE a lovely mother-in-law?'

So in the 2.5 hours since the b'day message was posted, IG followers have risen by 500+. I guess she's leveraging her twins' big day to pump up her followers again. To what end?

singing? Modeling? Acting? That is so ridiculous I can’t even stand it...I’ve never seen them show any talent whatsoever and sorry but to put it nicely...modeling is probably the funniest one

"I can say that I’ve poured endless love into you and fought tooth and nail for the best for you, but I cannot possibly take credit for the truly wonderful humans (adult humans!) you have become!"

Kate has to pat herself on the back somehow. I did so much for you unlike your deadbeat father. The best means reality TV money.

"I will still be with you every step of the way going forward"

The song "Every Breath You Take" by the Police is playing in my head.

A homemade cake? Paper plates? I guess TLC isn't footing the bill for his party. I love how she has to praise herself and her efforts on their special day. "I've...fought tooth and nail for the best for you". Sure you have, Kate. We all know the truth--the kids have worked their childhoods away to give HER the best. But Kate just cannot allow anything to be about someone else.

Unfortunately, Mady seems to be a lot like her mother in that she expects opportunities to drop into her lap. She said (when she was younger) that her dream was the Disney channel but didn't seem to put any effort into making that dream come true. She probably thought they should know who she is, and come looking for her. I hope she goes to college and has a career and a nice, normal life. Cara, too, although Cara seems to have more realistic expectations.

FormerlyDuped,
Maybe the 7th cup is for their "triplet", Marley. They seem to want to include her in everything they do.

"Ooh, wouldn't TFW BE a lovely mother-in-law"? --Sounds like you're channeling Chandler Bing! And to answer your question, sure, she'll be a barrel of laughs for whatever guy ends up with one of her daughters. I just hope the "lucky" guys aren't any of my sons!

That’s a subtle dig at Jon. The only turbulent times these kids have been through are a direct result Kate.

I still want to know what H8 is doing all day. She is doing nothing to build her brand. If she wanted a cooking show she could start by making some cooking YouTube videos using original recipes. Even just posting them to her blog with affiliate links would bring in some money.

I frequently watch YouTube videos when I want to learn how to cook or bake something. I also search blogs for recipes.

She should have figured out by now that no one is going to hand her something without her doing some work.

Administrative (#9), yeah, turbulent times like when their mom schlepped them all to Hawaii for a sham vow renewal and promised she'd be with their father forever, when she'd already decided to kick him to the curb. Oh, and then filmed the whole train wreck and milked her children's devastation for ratings.

The People's article has the usual mention of the interview with the twins about Jon. No other article mentions that. Quotes: "Jon previously claimed on Instagram Live that Hannah is living under his roof full-time." "This fall, Kate is set to return to TV with a TLC series documenting her love life, Kate Plus Date."

I would like to know what Kate is doing all day. She should be working on her brand. If she wants a cooking show or another cook book, she should be either making YouTube videos on how to cook original recipes or post original recipes on her now defunct blog. She could include sponsored content or adds to generate income. It will not be a big TLC paycheck but it’s something that could lead to other things.

Hoping the great unwashed mediocre will tell her, no, TFW, they're amazing because of YOU? Single mom! Deadbeat dad! You raised those 8 kids all alone! Worked and slaved to keep a roof over heads! (spoiler alert: 2 of those kids' heads are under different rooves now)

And I find it a bit creepy that M&C are still spoken of as a single unit by their mother. Yes, they are twins, but they are 2 individual young women.

Also, I'm not terribly impressed with her twins from what we've seen on camera in recent years. They are rude and mean more often than not. They hold grudges. They are still resentful of their siblings a whopping 14 years later, which is ridiculous and immature. I know they're "teens", but I know plenty of teens who don't behave that way, at least not frequently.

***************
There's a 3rd possibility . . . what if Katie Irene wouldn't invite Hannah to the party? Certainly possible as we've all seen the way she cuts people out of her life when they dare to oppose her or are of no further use. Beth, Jon, Collin, parents, siblings. The list is endless.

I do take comfort in the fact that even though she showed 8 plates and 7--8? containers of the personalized M&M's, she doesn't dare post a photo of the party attendees. She's never respected the kids' privacy--I think if Hannah was truly with her as she likes to imply, she'd post a picture.

I agree with the poster above---even though it's a school night, Katie Irene could have taken just the twins out for a special celebration. These 'celebrations' at home have got to be boring for two 18 year old girls.

I hate to break the news to People Magazine, but it IS fall. TLC announced the new show in April, and hasn't mentioned it since. People, however, keeps trying to do their part to spread Kate's message. She has a new show, the twins said in 2016 that they don't talk to Jon. Yeah, People Mag, we get it. You love Kate and you hate Jon and we all should, too. And everyone should watch Kate's dating show. Sorry, but I refuse to watch that witch in anything, so the constant reminders fall on deaf ears here.

So, anyone want to make bets on the premier date for this craptastic dating show? I would think that TLC would give at least a couple weeks' notice before I starts, but we haven't heard a thing. November, maybe?

Yes, you can buy both “likes” and comments. I’m pretty sure that’s she’s bought some comments because a lot of them are saying how they remember the twins as toddlers and they even remember them before the tups were born. Those types of comments are definitely coming from people who never really watched the show.

Her definition of the "best" is limited to fighting to keep filming no matter what for lots of cash and free things and so SHE never has find employment.

Just spitballin', but...do you suppose TLC filmed or will film an 18th birthday episode/special and TFW is just hesitant to mention it in case it never sees the light of day? Budgetwise, a birthday party episode is a drop in the bucket compared to the Duggar extravaganzas TLC still ponies up for. And, unlike this dating show nonsense, they would probably grab close to a million viewers for the nostalgia factor of the twins becoming adults.

Sue said...

Mom2two You’re right, it does look like Mady is buying followers since she’s already at 22.9K. Like mother like daughter. Maybe that was TFW’s birthday gift to her - thousands of instant followers. No big blowout 18th birthday bash? No car? I guess it’s true that if TLC doesn’t pay all they get is a mediocre party at home (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I wonder if Kate is naive (dumb) enough to think that TLC and their sponsors believe that those inflated numbers are real. Today Kate clocks in at 324K followers while Mady is already up to 25.6K followers. Cara, whose account is private, is holding at 685 followers because she's got to accept all requests to follow her. I think her numbers are the only honest ones.

Well we've discussed this a lot but I really think Kate thinks she's done what's best for the kids by giving them the gift of fame and opportunities and paychecks and estranging their terrible father from them, that great house and school, being able to give them all the clothes and shoes and activities her big family growing up couldn't.

I fear they are short on many of the things that really matter in life, the good values that make a child feel loved and secured and help them transition to adulthood smoothly. And they are certainly much worse off not having grown up with a father. Such things have little to nothing to do with the tangibles, Kate.

Sad but true said...

Well, the pic she posted of the twins has over 55.5K likes as of now, by far the highest number of any of her IG posts to date. So this strikes me as kind of a double-edged sword: If you can believe that the likes were not purchased in bulk, then the numbers show how much more popular the kids are than either the dogs or K8 herself (her b'day snap didn't even get to 30K). Did she really want TLC to have that confirmed?

Layla said...

Sad but true (56)

Funny how a picture of the twins got far more likes than the back-to-school picture of 6 of the kids. Looks like a whole bunch of likes were purchased. I'm sure she wants someone (TLC) to see that and think the Gosselins are still really popular (and therefore must be filmed!). But, she is doing herself a disservice because TLC, if they're paying attention, will see this as confirmation that Kate is not the big draw--the kids are. They could start a new show centered around just Mady and Cara, and cut Kate out completely--and there's nothing Kate can do about it. M&C are adults now, and they can make their own deals, sign their own contracts, and keep their own money. Ahhh, freedom at last!

Compare what M and C would have to offer to a show, with Brittany and Abby, the lively and spunky conjoined twins who had a limited show about their lives. They did exciting things like travel, try new things, live with friends, find a job, and apartment. Their daily lives with its challenges were fascinating to watch. I thought it was maybe going to exploit the twins, but I read an interview that said they wanted the truth out there rather than rumors and curious stares. JMO.

Layla said...

The one thing Mady and Cara have is name recognition. If they had a show, some people would watch because they have followed the Gosselin saga from the beginning, just like the audience for K+8. But that audience is small and getting smaller, as evidenced by the low viewership of K+8. People loved the whole family with all the cute toddlers. Ratings went down when Jon left, and then continued to decline as the cute toddlers turned into average kids, and Kate's attitude got more annoying without Jon to absorb her nastiness. Who wants to watch a mother be nasty to her kids? The show never recovered. The charming aspects are gone forever. TLC is stupid to try to market Kate on her own (IF they end up airing the dating show). The ratings are going to be hilarious, which translates to lots of laughs for us but great embarrassment to TLC. Kate doesn't care as long as she gets a paycheck and gets to see herself on TV. Anyone who takes on the twins is going to see the same results. They can't bring back the whole family that people loved. It was time to move on a long time ago.

Formerly Duped (#60), even if M and C are as dull as dishwater, TFW could've scored at least a People cover for their 18th birthday if she'd not been such a shrew.

She dropped the ball again and again when it came to working hard and playing nice with the powers that be in the entertainment industry. And after a promising start staying in touch with fans on social media, she essentially disappeared. Remember how she scoffed when the Vanity Fair interviewer implied her fame was limited to that moment? Schmoops assumed she'd stay red hot for years and years. Welcome to the 21st century, sister.

What the heck does Kate do to support herself and her children?

Could she possibly have made that much money (and investments from it) from Kate Plus 8, Celebrity Wife Swap, Dancing with the Stars, her books, her few celebrity appearances, and stories and/or pics she sold to the media?

How do you go this many years without steady work?? Is she taking a percentage of her children's trusts as their "Momager?"

I truly hope she's been using her funds to support herself and her children, not using their earnings to support them, even if it's legal for her to do so.

I wonder if something changes with the trusts now that Mady and Cara are legal adults. Since they are still living at home can she "charge" them "rent," "expenses," etc?

Layla said...

People magazine is so closely tied to TLC that it's very odd that TLC didn't demand a cover for the twins' birthday. They could put Kate right between Mady and Cara on the cover and make the story all about her and how, now that the kids are growing up, she's dating again! And everyone can watch her new dating show on TLC starting on _____ (fill in the blank with the date). That is, IF they have a date in mind to start her show. It's supposed to premier in the fall, and it's fall now!

I'm wondering if someone at People is a little ticked off at getting caught peddling Kate's lies. The story about Kate having full custody was immediately debunked by the back-to-school pictures that showed that Hannah was NOT with her, and Hannah and Jon both said that Hannah lives with her dad now. And the story about Kate going broke was put out last December, but 10 months later she's still doing fine. Of course, Kate doesn't worrying about lying, but People magazine has to worry about their credibility. Or what's left of it.

*****************
The kids' trust is a revocable trust, so she can take it all if she wants. I really don't care how much money she has for herself, but I do care about whether the kids get their money. They have worked since they were toddlers, gave up their privacy, were filmed going to the bathroom and had their private parts shown on TV. Still, after all they have given up, I don't doubt for a second that Kate would take their money rather than get a real job. So I hope she has enough money to take care of herself so that the kids get every dime that is owed them. I also wish she didn't have enough money to bully Jon in court. She always goes after him in court so she can hurt him by draining his finances. That way, even if Jon wins in court, she "wins" by taking what little money he has. It's sadistic. So I hope she has enough money to support herself without taking the kids' money, but not so much that she can use it to hurt Jon.

My guess would be that they are having a hard time finding a man that would actually “date” Kate. She posted the picture of Jamie and herself flying on the plane ,with that manic look on her face. They were probably in the process of filming the first episode. But maybe Mr Date changed his mind. Remember Van. Van was paid actor, not a longtime friend of Deanna. I don’t believe that for a second. Kate’s old boyfriend, Joe Millionaire refused to be featured on the show as her new boyfriend. He had morales and refused to be Kate’s pawn. And he saw Kate’s greed and her obsession with fame, and it turned him off.
At the height of her teevee career, A show like this be an absolute hit. But that ship has sailed, like so many others

I think Kate's hoping this dating show will be a hit, and that she can get some guy to pose as her love interest so they can do a show together. She's hoping to recreate some of the dynamic of herself and Jon, but the interesting part of the dynamic between her and Jon was how they handled the pressures of raising all those little kids. That part of her life is over forever, and the kids are becoming adults and getting ready to leave home. She must know she needs to come up with something new if she wants to stay on TV, but just her and some guy simply won't be interesting. What would they do? Episode after episode of them going on trips? That's probably her dream.

I didn't know it was televised, and it tickles me as kind of funny they could only get some airtime on TLC. Those two princesses are sort of like the Kate Gosselins of the family. Not in the sense they are nasty, they seem like okay people. But they always seem to think they're far more famous or at least should be than they really are, and they will take whatever scraps of spotlight they can find from their much more popular and charismatic cousins and wear it proudly without any shame, even if it's just the graveyard shift on TLC.

What sounds odd to me is Kates claim that Collin doesn't have any set diagnosis--she said his diagnosis was "fairly fluid". If a school district is going to pay for a child to be institutionalized for years on end, you'd think they'd demand to know what the child is being treated for. Just like insurance, there needs to be a diagnosis. My thought is that Kate is lying, and just doesn't want to admit the problem. If it's something that was caused by her treatment of him, or by him being forced to work and shoulder such a heavy burden at a young age, she'll never admit it.

I think Jon is trying to get custody of Collin--he said before that he is working on having C transferred to him. But he can't just take C out of there without having custody. Kate won't let Jon have custody--out of spite. She doesn't want to be bothered with C, but she won't just let Jon have him either. It's all about control to her. I hope Jon prevails and Collin gets to have a home with his dad and his sister. And eventually, I hope, more of his siblings.

Layla said...

jamesvader1194,
I don't believe for a second that Kate sees Collin. I think for her it's out of sight, out of mind. Collin's only hope is for Jon to get custody. Otherwise C will stay in that facility until he ages out, and then what? Where does he go? Kate still won't want him around.

It infuriates me to see how Kate's fans speculate about Collin. They tell non-fans not to question Kate because they don't know what's really happening, and then in the same comment they'll say that maybe Collin is a danger to himself or others, maybe he threatened to hurt someone. They're doing to Collin what they say non-fans can't do to Kate. There is nothing at all that points to Collin being a danger. Nobody, not even Kate, has hinted at any such thing. If anything, he seemed to have been medicated to the point that he was emotionally absent. Poor little guy.

She needs to keep it "fluid" in case the school district tries to not pay and she has to change the diagnosis around so they will pay.

Formerly Duped said...

Well, I know you need a specific diagnosis accepted as a disability to have the school system pay for Collin's treatment. I don't think TFW needed to tell the public what the Dx is but there surely is at least one or more

Doesn’t there come a time when she’s got to start footing the bill? If he’s in a reputable place they’re not going to lie and cover up for her and her fluid diagnosis by telling the board of ed what TFW wants them to hear. To do so would probably cause them to lose their accreditation or licenses wouldn’t it? He did look happy in the pictures with Jon and Hannah though so I assume that being away from TFW (the root of his problems) is a good thing, however it’s got to be hard to be away from his siblings.

You know I hate to say this but if hes in an institution...the state pays for everything and the institution makes money..sorry but that how it works...my son is in day programs and the more he goes the more money they make...brutal reality...sometimes they stretch these things out even though the kids is probably ready to come home...they will tell Kate how he’s doing and sometimes it’s left to her whether he should leave...she does have the power to pull him out anytime she wants if it was her decision to place him there..if it wasn’t than she’s at the mercy of the state

Well of course she can’t. But that won’t stop her from making up whatever she wants to tell the public. It also won’t stop her from “changing” it to suit her purpose by claiming he was “misdiagnosed.” Kate can say anything she wants. She always has. We have no idea what Collin has been diagnosed with. Not that we should. But that just makes it easier for Kate to say whatever she wants to suit her agenda. Such as “fluid” diagnosis.

Princess Eugine actually got engaged long before Harry did, but she was made to push her wedding back after his because he had to go first. I feel for her on that, and word is she was not happy. Now apparently AT the wedding everyone knew about the pregnancy and they upstaged the point of the event.

They must be fuming! Lol, those girls crack me up.

And if you don't think the princesses have a little rivalry going with the more prominent first in line royals, do some googling.

They get up to some silly pranks... Princess Beatrice slashed Ed Sheeran's face with a sword at a party while pretending to knight James Blunt, the singer. Ed let on he was not supposed to talk about it but the story got around even saying Ed was at fault. Who knows. Sounds like a dangerous escapade which left him with stitches and a scar...then back in the day Princes Di and Fergie were called to task for poking people with umbrella tips at a sporting event - polo maybe?

There's been a flood of special Halloween cooking/baking/decorating shows on the Food Network, but still no place in the line up for TFW. Imagine that an author of a cookbook and mother of 8 kids would not be deemed a great choice for any of those types of shows. Even as a guest judge or for a short segment on holiday traditions in her unique household. She destroyed her promising career single-handedly.

If Jon is going for custody of Collin, you can bet that Kate will fight it tooth and nail to keep Collin from him. It took almost a year for Jon to get custody of Hannah. I imagine that this custody battle will be just as nasty or worse. Kate can not say that Collin needs to be in a facility if Jon is able to bring him home after he gets custody.

We will likely not hear anything about the custody battle until after custody has been decided.

I think you're right. Both Jon and Kate (and Hannah too) have been pretty quiet on social media. Makes me think something is going on, and when there's something happening in court, the judge tends to slap them with a gag order. It was stated during the summer (can't remember who said it) that Jon is working toward having Collin transferred to his custody. I wish him luck because if he doesn't prevail, Collin will be stuck in that facility until he ages out. Kate doesn't want him, but she doesn't want Jon to have him, either. Jon is Collin's only change to come home.

Flimsy 109, and I remember Robert Hoffman said more than once she'd drive off down the highway knowing full well Shoka had gotten out of the yard and was running loose. IIRC, he'd get him back inside the gate so he wouldn't get hit by a vehicle.

&&&

Watching her on DWTS was about as revealing as it could be. Obviously, she has no idea the real hard work that goes into Hollywood A and even B listers. You can't just go out there and do the dance, you have to practice 16 hours 7 days a week, you have to focus, you have to work at it. And that goes for almost anyone who has made it big. The expectations on sets and productions is that the talent will work hard, stay late, give it their all, focus, put personal stuff aside like kids and ex's. Kate doesn't have that, and in addition to having no talent, that makes her box office poison.

The common denominator for Hollywood "made it's" is simple: hard freaking work. It's not for everyone, frankly it's not for most people. Most people I imagine would prefer a more reasonable work day and then time for family, friends and relaxing afterward. So what I don't understand is why Kate didn't embrace that she is not cut out for this stuff. If that's not for you, then get out of Hollywood. The consequence if you don't have a little self awareness about this, is utter humiliation, and that's exactly what happened to Kate on DWTS.

Yes, I've noticed on kid competition shows they really seem to struggle emotionally with eliminations. It's the most uncomfortable part, though it seems like on most shows adults are supportive and comforting to any kid who is getting upset. I think in particular Master Chef Junior does a good job of being supportive of stressed out kids and calming them back down from outer space. Gordon Ramsey is as gentle as a lamb with kids. All bets are off when you're an adult.

I'm thinking 5-6 episodes for the dating show. I really think they contracted for a season of K+8, and only filmed 3 episodes. They would still contractually owe Kate a certain number of episodes (however many they contracted for minus the 3 that aired). With all the issues surrounding Hannah and Collin, they decided to stop airing K+8 and stuck with just Kate. They're only doing it because they have to honor the original contract. It's doubtful that it will be ready to air this fall, but I think it'll air sometime, and that will be it.

I agree. Someone said before that the twins have had private accounts for some time. If you click on the link to Cara's account that Kate provided in their 18th birthday post, it shows as private. So Cara appears to have drawn the proverbial line in the sand and is indicating she is going to protect her privacy and not be drawn into Kate's manipulation. I really think Kate is trying to generate interest in a 'going to college' special about the twins.

I feel like at this point, this is the best we can hope for: that these kids manage to go to some decent colleges (or get some kind of training in the chosen field if college isn't their thing) and manage to lead somewhat normal lives. Collin included. It's insane to consider all they've been through allready in their young lives. I hope they don't even write tell all books, they just fade into a "mediocre" anonymous life.

Of course, if it is true J and K are now fighting over C, the war anf turmoil may be far from over for the kids, unfortunately.

I too suspect that just as K normalized the cameras, she normalized C being in an institution. It's disturbing.

I can't remember the exact comment Hannah made, but in one live video I happened to see, she said in a very vague manner that she does indeed see her siblings. She didn't specify who or how often. Someone else said in other live video she said something to the effect of she doesn't see the twins or much see them, or something.

But in any case I wouldn't take that literally. For kids, and even some adults, "don't see someone" can mean exactly what it suggests that you don't actually ever see them, but it could also mean you just don't see them that often. Humans tend to exaggerate all the time when speaking, it's funny.

The oft forgotten people in the equation is the other siblings. There is damage to Hannah and Collin by the separation here, absolutely. But similar damage is done to the remaining siblings.

Hannah has been separated from Leah but Leah has also equally been separated from Hannah. They are being robbed of a chance to grow up as siblings together. Robbed. This whole situation really can't get much worse. You failed your kids, Kate.

The twins have to settle for personalized M&Ms instead. And I bet Katie counted out the exact number each child got of those.

————-
They are actually in the 8th grade. But Hannah may be a 9th grader now, according to what Jon said on the first day of school.
It makes me wonder if the twins actually got their drivers licenses btw.Kate didn’t post anything about it on Instagram. There was no #helpmemytwinsaredriving posts And they are going away to college soon. They will need some method of transportation or way of getting around on there own. Mady’s response of “oh mommy drives us everywhere” wont work forever. I also wonder if the twins have had a job yet. Theyre getting to a point where they need their own money. Or maybe now that they are 18, Kate has given them access to their trusts. I vaguely remember an early episode where Jon and Kate set up the trusts and Kate was gleefully entertaining the idea of adding an exception that the kids had to either attend college to get their money or be an older age (30?)

How is Kathleen funded if she takes on these cases pro bono? Her time, her law clerks time and experts time. Does her law firm make enough money to fund these?

&&&

I bet you the pro bono high profile cases are basically like her free advertising to get her mug out there, and that drives all the other paid business to the firm to keep them afloat. Judging by all those cute little turquoise leather suit coats and all the gold plated everything at her office, she's doing well!

I believe she is a well intentioned woman, but 10 full episodes of Making a Murder that turned into the Kathleen Zellner show was like a million dollars in free advertising and she knows it. I am trying to think If I've ever encountered a smarter lawyer.

Yup, I agree. So smart (and deservedly well compensated). Did you find it interesting that, at least what they showed, most of the law clerks in Kathleen's office were female and the law clerks, (or probably law students) working with Laura Nirider were female? Is this the type of work young male lawyers don't fall into (or want) or there are more females becoming lawyers now?

Also, about time someone researches who actually killed Teresa. I wondered about that the whole first season.

&&&&

Innocence cases do tend to attract a lot of young female lawyers. I think you are more likely to hear a woman lawyer say she joined the law to help people or seek justice, whereas men may prefer the prestige of the law or like the idea of working with big companies and high stakes transactions. Both pursuits have their merits, but yes the pro bono stuff does attract a lot of women. As far as who makes up young lawyers today, it's about 50-50 male/female, though slightly more women than men.

I also think many women lawyers have a long haul plodding personality, whereas a man may grow tired of it and want to move on to another interesting case. Exoneration cases also involve spending extensive time supporting the client and the family. You could see Kathleen spending days with Steven's mother sitting at her kitchen table, and hours on the phone with Steven supporting him during slumps. That kind of hand-holding is more attractive to many women lawyers.

Kathleen is the rare package deal in a lawyer. The analytical part of her brain couldn't be sharper. She exposed things like layers of an onion that seem so simple now, but were never seen by anyone else. Yet I found her personality to be very gentle, supportive, sympathetic. I was quite touched at the time she spent in particular with Delores Avery. Many lawyers would not consider this sort of thing necessary to the case, and would at most offer a brief phone call with an update and leave it at that. However one thing I've learned over the years is the more time you spend sitting with the client just chatting, the better you understand them and the case, and the more things that tend to come out. The best advice I ever got was don't sit in the courtroom for hours waiting for your case to be called. Sit outside with the client and chat.

Of course there are exceptions to all these generalizations.

I thought Brendan's lawyers were extremely well meaning and as prepared as they could be, but I thought Kathleen's critique of their screw ups was on the money. Brendan's lawyers were good. Kathleen's firm was spectacular. Good isn't going to cut it in a case like this.

Something happened to Milo.... I said it before and got sniped at by one of the regulars here, but she has NEVER been gone this long. She is either dead or very, very sick. She had health problems and has likely passed.

Someone here knows who she is... they mentioned some personal information about her. If folks are really interested someone could do some research.

A old regular- I agree, something has happened to Milo. The last time she was gone for a prolonged period of time I DMd her and she answered that she’d been sick. I DMd her a month ago but haven’t heard back. I also contacted some of her posting buddies but no one has heard from her. If someone does know who she is I wish they’d checkup on her.

She's pretty much convinced me it's the Dassey brother who was into the murder-porn. How awful that him and the stepfather are letting Brendan and Steven sit in jail for this.

Is he biologically related to Brendan, or is he a stepbrother?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

My favorite quote from Zellner, said when she brought up the issue of the other Dassey brother doing it or the boyfriend playing a role and how mad that was making people: "Sorry to offend everyone but I'm very offended by having a client who's innocent and is now spending 13 years locked up for something he didn't do so all of our feelings are hurt."

Ha, bam.

hatred and took the bombs so non-seriously that he Tweeted about "bombs" -- in quotes

&&&

It is correct to put "bombs" in quotes. Anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of chemistry would take one look at those and know that they couldn't go off. They were not wired to explode upon impact, did not have a device capable of setting them off remotely, and did not present as any kind of reliable explosive device. At best, they included some material that COULD be combustible, but that's like saying the petrol tank in your garage for the grill is a bomb. You should be careful, certainly, but the risk is pretty low.

It's a good thing the guy was so mentally ill he couldn't even put a real bomb together, and it's a good thing they were "bombs" and not BOMBS. It doesn't excuse the act and he should be locked up for this.

The bad thing is, we didn't lock him up when it was clear he was mentally ill in 2002 during his first bomb threat. Find something else.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Twitter is absolutely in the wrong, but the idea that they could have stopped the bomber is speculative at best

&&&

The definition of could basically is "might" so I don't know what you're strung out about. Of course we don't know for sure what would have happened had Twitter started caring more about their users and less about making their billions. The fact that we don't know what would have happened for sure had Twitter called the authorities is no reason not to blame Twitter. You do everything you can to protect your users and the integrity of the platform and the general public at large and if it doesn't work, the point is that you did your due diligence. They didn't just ignore this victim, they flat out told her they weren't going to help her at all. But at least give the authorities a fighting chance to intervene. And I can see what the woman did not call the cops when she was advised, incorrectly, by Twitter, who obviously aren't lawyers, that the behavior she experienced was not a threat. That would very much discourage a person who is not familiar with the law from taking this any further if they're already being told this is nothing.

This is not the first time Twitter was in the direct line of proximate cause during a tragedy or in this case potential tragedy. The pattern is there.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

And yet, you called him the bomber, not the "bomber." I guess you lacked a rudimentary knowledge of chemistry when you made that post.

&&&

I didn't. I'm not a big fan of using quotes in this manner in general, it's jarring to read unless absolutely necessary. I guess that's the journalism major in me. But quotes are completely correct in describing this man's abilities. It's stupid to get upset over grammar. You could also say he's a "person" too, because really he's an animal.

Anonymous said...

Actually Admin they could have gone off if the explosive used was a contact explosive. I am leaning towards this theory because the FBI said that the bombs could have gone off if exposed to heat or pressure. TATP is one kind of contact explosive that is easy to make. It’s easy to get the materials required to make it. It is odorless. The PVC pipes protected the explosive from going off due to pressure. The cooler temperatures also helped keep the explosives from going off.

When I was a chemistry grad student we would make TATP when the gen chem students were studying energy of reactions. TATP energy is released as expansion (shock wave) instead of heat/fire.

Andrea (the chemist)

&&&

No, I get that. Which is why it was a "bomb." Contained dangerous material to be sure but very unlikely it would go off. You don't mess around just like you don't mess around with not cleaning out the lint from your dryer, but the danger was always low. As evidence by the fact that not a single one went off even when opened.

In any case, it's silly for anonymous to be upset. It was a bomb or a "bomb", either one is a fair characterization.

&&&

I sssumed he was a full brother because he had the same last name. I remember a picture they showed of the four boys, as young children, sitting on a couch with their Easter baskets. They were all really close in age. Maybe they were not full brothers......
I also remember one quote from Brendon’s mom that Bobby has never or rarely visited Brendan in prison because he’s so upset. This was way before the filmmakers put out Kathleen’s theory that Bobby and Scott were the killers.

Impatiently waiting for the third season. :)

&&&

That's a really good point. Guilt??

Bobby raped her then had to kill her, and the stepfather helped cover it up. The stepfather grossly exaggerated the things he saw. They had experts testify the amount of fuel it would take to create a fire the size he claimed he saw would be astronomical. There simply wasn't enough fuel on the property. So why exaggerate but for to make it seem like Stephen was burning the body?

And, on the prison phone call, he contradicted his testimony, admitting he did see Teresa leave the property. If Teresa left, that blows the prosecution's theory apart.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I need to see the Dassey family tree but where does the stepfather come in and is he father to any of the kids? And what's wrong with you that you cover for one brother but implicate the other? If one of them did it, tell the police which one! From a father's perspective, what is the point of pinning it on Brendan if it were really Bobby, and WHO DOES THAT anyway? It's not like it was someone outside the family, then it would make sense to cover for Bobby. But you don't cover for one by blaming the other, that's just messed up.

Sad but true said...

____

No, he's not the father of any of the mother's kids. They weren't married until after Brendan went to jail. He was living close by but not with Barbara at the time of the murder.

Re the question of what Kathleen stands to gain, besides the PR value, Avery had a HUGE wrongful imprisonment case in process for that rape he was proven not to have committed after 18 years in jail. (I think I remember this being a suggested motive for the local law enforcement people to try to pin the Halbach murder on him.) It was in the hundreds of millions. While I doubt he would have gotten that much, I am thinking Kathleen probably has a marker on any such case in the future, as well as book or other deals. So she could well reap a windfall if she can succeed on the appeal.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

&&&

The sad truth is though, I don't think Avery is getting out much less getting a settlement. Too many Court of Appeals have denied it, and every denial is like another nail, making it all the more reluctant for other courts to reverse their peers. I think Kathleen knows it's a long shot. I also think she genuinely wants to help the wrongfully accused, and even if she fails, at least Steven will know somebody tried. It's probably very true she knows there's book deals and other publicity out there. But she was doing very well for herself before Avery, she don't need him.

Again, seeing her spend all that time with Delores, the mother, made me believe she was sincere. Nobody does that, seriously. You never saw his other attorneys spending much time with the family.

I watched Making a Murderer and it is such a confusing case to me. I say that because can it really be true that the police are so corrupt in that area that they can plant all this evidence and the corruption goes all the way up the ladder to the state supreme court? It just seems impossible that every single court and judge could be in on this cover up. But Kathleen did some very serious research and IMO proved so many things wrong the state did. It's a conundrum and I'm fascinated and nauseated by this series at the same time. I feel like my lungs need clearing out just from watching all the smoking Steven's sister Barb does. As for the step father, he is a sketchy piece of work. I heard them say they had not been married too long so why he would try to destroy one son while protecting the scum porn son just baffles me. But then, we are not talking about salt of the earth people here. The Avery's are unlikable in so many ways. BUT, that does not mean anyone should be in prison if they didn't commit a crime. And Brandon absolutely got a rotten deal. He was coerced and it was on film. And the courts call that ok, that the police can actually give him information and basically force him to say he did this? He is mentally challenged, that was clear, and what they have done to him is despicable. I feel bad for Teresa's family and yet at the same time I don't. It's a mess.

&&&&

I agree it is a complex case. The corruption extends simply to the county, who were going to owe Avery multi millions. It doesn't go all the way up. The appellate court's hands are tied. They're supposed to uphold cases absent exceptional circumstances. There were some justices who were extremely passionate that Brendan was set up, others felt that not withstanding that, they had to uphold the law. I do think many of them think the imperative thing is to keep Avery in jail, but without Brendan, their case crumbles. Thus Brendan becomes collateral damage.

**
He was coerced and it was on film. And the courts call that ok, that the police can actually give him information and basically force him to say he did this? He is mentally challenged, that was clear, and what they have done to him is despicable.

&&&

Because of his age and being mentally challenged, he never should have been questioned that way. It got reversed TWICE but ultimately upheld. I hope Wisconsin re-writes the laws to forbid it. The confessions are unreliable, and if we are a system that seeks justice, why would you want an unreliable confession out there? Get the evidence some other way.

**

I feel bad for Teresa's family and yet at the same time I don't. It's a mess.

&&&

I mostly feel bad for them, because they were hoodwinked by prosecutors and misled about the state of the evidence, and it's hard for them to back down now. But if they really want justice for Teresa, I hope they will take a second look at this. If she were watching, intelligent and kind as she was, I'm betting that's what she would want too.

The Dream/Killer documentary is on Youtube, it's another case Kathleen Zellner took on and won.

She offers some interesting thoughts that provide more insight into her and how she practices. She says she really wants to win and if she's going to fight something she takes it to the end. So, she has a competitive personality and a must-win attitude. She believes in being a lion in court, and believing your position 100 percent.

Ryan Ferguson was very lucky to have an incredibly smart father who had the entire case paper by paper laid out in his garage and knew it by heart. Kathleen found him extremely helpful, almost like a co-counsel.

She doesn't have that with the Avery's, who are elderly, lower middle class and not educated or able to grasp the nuisances of the evidence, and incapable of being of much assistance to her.

She also has an incredible ethical stance. When Ryan's friend tried to take responsibility for the murder and get the heat off Ryan, she wouldn't accept it as true even if it might help Ryan, because she knew based on the evidence she reviewed that NEITHER men committed it.

Kylie said...

I was so happy when Ryan was finally exonerated. That case was so messed up. There was so much proof he didn't do anything. I saw each of the episodes that was about his case and when they would interview him in prison I just cried. The day he was released was great!

It's very frustrating that neither

Ryan's defense attorney may cost big bucks but he stunk. You were already losing, you had NOTHING TO LOSE asking the janitor witness if Ryan was the guy he saw. She would have said NO NEVER SAW HIM, according to her! Even if she said yes that's him, you could still attack her on cross about how long ago it had been since she last saw him and how corrupt her memory may be from seeing his face on the media. It's really a win-win move for a defense attorney about to lose anyway. He needed someone with balls of steel to win his case, and Kathleen finally came to the rescue.
