Recap: Kate Plus 8 "Six Teenagers!": Glitter and sawdust and an awesome gender-specific party that Mother will never leave

The Duggars have the patience of Job, I'll give them that. It's incredible the way JimBoob has gradually eased himself back into the show over the years, with the promos for next week prominently featuring him at yet another wedding. Nobody will notice the family actually got fired, right?

Coming up on Kate Plus 8. Well, this party looks reasonably cool, with camping, mani-pedi's for the girls, archery tag, and the return of some yesteryear characters in Ashley, Jamie and Steve.

The thing is, kids don't need fancy ski trips, lavish parties, private lessons in whatever, or to get on a plane and go somewhere where the humidity is 90% and it's off season so the Air B&B mansion is half off. Rather, kids just want to blow up an air mattress and sleep in their own back yard. I'm glad they finally get to experience something cost effective and normal on their special day.

Kate has dreaded age 13 since they were born, Kate says. Well, that's a rather negative outlook on a rather wonderful age. Need we say more, she asks?

Pretty please do not say more.

But, of course, we're not getting off that easy. She will say more. A lot more. Kate struggles with party ideas, and to top last year's birthday every year. Not only is this woman in a competition with everyone else, but for goodness sake she's even in competition with last year's Kate. Sheesh. Her kids can speak now, and have minds of their own. Why not ask them what they want to do for their birthday. That will take a lot of burden off you to think of something. You'd be surprised how much a teen knows exactly what they want for their birthday.

Between Aaden and Mady and Kate, and producers of course, they came up with the idea to do a camping birthday, with the boys camping and the girls "glamping."

Sounds like an excuse to do a huge shopping spree at REI to me!

Lol, why make something easy. Kate has to remove an entire giant swing set in order to have room for one of the tents. The kids are bummed about this. At least she's not just dumping it into the dumpster, she's going to give it to a friend. That's nice. I actually remember when we removed the swing set at our house when I was a teen and I did find it surprisingly sad, even though like these kids, I hadn't used it in years. I remember us kids protesting, and our parents calmly reasoning with us that we never use it, and it will make caring for the lawn easier and provide more room for things we do more of now, like kicking a soccer ball around. Every kid should grow up with a swing set, and then have to watch it go when they are a teen. It's a right of passage and actually, a life lesson.

No one consulted Mady about this, Mady protests. And that's another reason that seemingly little things like removing a swing set are good for kids to see. I guess these kids are an exception since they do pay their way, but, for most kids, it's a life lesson in that it wasn't really your swing set, it's your parents' set to decide what to do with it, and it's not really your lawn, you aren't paying the property taxes and mortgage or doing the lawn upkeep. In life, many things that don't really belong to you will be taken away by someone else it does belong to making the decision. And if you don't like that, you need to work hard to get your own property someday so you can make your own decisions about swing sets. And also, it's good to teach kids that it's okay to let something go that was special to you, move on and let other children enjoy it, and just have the memories. Kate is too busy actively trying to teach her children things to notice that she just did so without trying.

We go on some long unrelated tangent complete with flashbacks about which sibling is which's favorite. Weird, divisive question and who cares?

Some guys who apparently don't want their business associated with Kate (their shirts are blurred out) set up the tents. Heh.

Some intern had fun with the drone getting a nice high speed shot of the house from above. It really is a sprawling property, with impeccable landscaping. I would do so much more with the outdoor space though. All they've got is a "meh" pool, and that deck fit for preachers and gays alike. I'd do an expansive outdoor space with an outdoor TV for watching sports, built in grill area with a sink and fridge, a bar, and lots of kinds of plush seating to choose from. A ping-pong table, corn hole, and other outdoor games are a must, and these kids would have everybody over at their house all the time. Seeing it now from above, the deck doesn't really serve much of a purpose. You have plenty of room at ground level to house all the same furniture across a much bigger area, instead of crammed onto a small deck. I don't get the point of the deck at all. The only thing I remember Kate saying about it is that she was tired of carrying things from the kitchen upstairs, I guess, to the original patio area downstairs. Well, that's a poor layout of a house then, and something you should have thought of upon purchase. Also, that doesn't seem like a good enough reason to create a smaller outdoor area when you could use the huge area downstairs and make it up really nice.

Jamie's back again. They must have come to terms on her contract because she was gone for awhile prior to these past few episodes. The boys' tent is going to be deep in the woods, which is cool, but kind of strange how isolated they are back in the woods when the girls are right near the house. The kids are arranging a cool fire pit, which should have been done years ago, but better late than never.

It's kind of nice the girls come to help the boys set up their stuff, though they seem to only be doing it to have an opportunity to boss them around, and the boys don't really appreciate much of it. Aaden is in that stage of his voice changing where he mostly just sounds stuffed up. Heh.

Kate's already called it quits even though I haven't seen her helping with much anything, announcing exhaustedly this is the last big birthday party she's doing for them. Good, she should butt out for once and let them go off with their friends for their birthday or heaven forbid have Jon host the party one year.

The day of the party is here, and Kate has a million and a half excuses why she had to do everything last minute (i.e. why she intentionally creates drama for the cameras). Funny thing is as she says this she and Jamie are doing things that absolutely could have been done ahead of time, like putting a pillowcase on a pillow. It's really a good thing she is not someone's regular employee because she would be a pain in the neck.

Wow, we're getting a knock in at her parents and childhood early this episode. We're only 16 minutes in and this is the party Kate always wanted as a kid but never had. I'm really, really sorry to her parents they have to continue to hear spiteful comments like this from their daughter on such a public platform. I'm betting her parents did the best they could with what they had, did not value spending money as the only way to show a child love as Kate does, and I hope, hope they know that for the vast majority of adults, a good childhood does not mean an over-the-top, lavish, expensive birthday party. If all they threw for their children were modest birthday parties here and there over the years, they did nothing wrong. Many families can't afford to throw parties at all, other than just inviting family and a few friends over for cake and ice-cream. It's expensive to throw a big party with a bunch of kids every year. Kreiders, ya got dealt a nasty kid here who is in the minority, not the majority, when reflecting on what makes a great childhood, okay?

Kate and Jamie are assembling things. Kate argues with everyone, even the instructions, yelling at the instructions and Jamie that clockwise, counterclockwise, it doesn't matter.

Jamie is like, eh, it probably does matter. (It probably does!). But Jamie was never one to push her until absolutely necessary.

Steve is our "Head of Security" Kate says with a straight face as he shuttles her around the property and does shit for her more like a personal assistant would do than a bodyguard on the roof watching for snipers.

I just spit my orange juice. Head of security?! Lol. Like there's an entire secret service in place for these has-beens. And for head of security, he sure hasn't taught her well, as just the other day she was encouraging fans to approach her and talk to her in The Cheesecake Factory. Not very wise to invite such close access to total strangers.

More like Head of Dolts, chief head! Steve is usually behind the scenes, explains Kate. Ha, he sure is!

I guess this is part of the slow master plan to ease Steve into the picture. A long conversation about a compass and setting up a scavenger hunt for the party. There is something about how he is talking here that rubs me the wrong way. He's so matter-of-fact, direct, and rings rather arrogant. Nothing is thought through because he already instantly knows the answer. He seems like the kind of husband who never asks for directions, always decides what the plan will be for the family without caring what anybody else thinks, and never lets you touch the credit cards. In other words, an ass. I never liked anything about Steve, unlike friends like Ashley and Jamie, who seem okay to even really cool sometimes.

This also seems like something that could be mostly set up the day before. They're like an old dysfunctional married couple, with Steve making a-hole comments to Kate like she should go back to the house to be safe, and that she's disorganized. I don't like someone like this. I know it's Kate, and she's annoying as hell, but it doesn't mean you get a free pass to be an asshat to her.

Steve says, interestingly enough, that a lot of people don't tell her things, but he tells her the truth. If she's wrong, he tells her. I'm not at all surprised people don't want to offend Kate, because when you do, you usually get cut off from the children. Doesn't seem like Steve would care much if that ever happened. But again, Steve sounds like an ass. Yes, of course you should tell someone the truth about themselves. Prince William said years ago he can't stand lackey friends, and only surrounds himself with people who are willing to call him out. Otherwise he fears he'll go haywire. But, the way Steve says it, he makes it sound like he's always right and Kate's always wrong, and thank goodness he is around to save her from herself. I can't believe Kate puts up with this condescending crap. I'd fire this guy within a day if only for the terrible example he's setting for the kids.

Mady is working on the girls glamping area, and it's really nice, with lots of pinks and whites and comfortable seating. Cara is nowhere to be found. Maybe she is doing what normal kids do on the weekend, go play sports, hang with friends, off at a music lesson, upstairs doing homework.

The archery tag people arrive in an absolutely gigantic vehicle. Yeesh! This party is really starting to $$$$$$$$$$. Also this is a good excuse to kill time showing a bunch of flashbacks to archery tag. Aw, the kids are absolutely thrilled about this.

Boys vs. girls, Kate announces immediately. Good golly, enough already!!

The kids are conforming to the usual gender stereotypes, with the girls wanting a prissy glamping experience and the boys a more rugged, GI-Joe like party. They are this bound to their gender stereotypes because they are being raised by a mother who adheres to strict gender stereotypes. On the one hand, this rigid adherence to typical gender roles is beyond antiquated, and is the kind of thinking that eventually makes some children uncomfortable to be who they really are. I'm not implying gay necessarily, but just non-conformist or just not into things like nails and dressing up (perhaps, Alexis). On the other hand, there is a lot of pressure on parents lately to do away with gender roles and raise kids homogeneously or nearly so, and in my view, that is really crossing a line into parental rights that people have no right to interfere with. We say a lot about Kate's bad parenting here, but I think the only thing she should be legally forced to do is not abuse her children and get her kids off T.V. Otherwise, if a parent like Kate, possibly in large part due to religion, or for other reasons, wants to raise a boy or girl in a certain way based solely on their genitals, that is their right to do so and they should not feel pressured or shamed by social constructionists for doing so.

Ashley's back, wearing an awesome Johnny Cash shirt. Ashley is going to take on the drudgery of sticking with the boys for the party. Poor thing. It looks like for much of the party the girls and boys will be separated. Wouldn't a good mother want to help out with both parties? It's so sad she sticks Ashley on doing the bulk of the work with the boys, instead of switching off so she spends equal time at both parties. If she thinks her boys don't notice this, she's mistaken.

I don't see Kate doing much work herself, but she sure can delegate the work to everybody else. She is manipulative and everybody falls for it for some reason. Or maybe the only people who fall for it are the ones willing to stick around.

The party begins, with a few friends arriving. I don't think this is going to be a big blowout with dozens of kids, but it's okay, smaller parties are okay too. I've always wondered if the reason they never seem to have endless friends is because a lot of families won't agree to filming, and that would be sad.

Mady is being really great as she helps out with the girls party. I saw shades of Mady's kindness when she was a tyke, along with a flash of temper, too. But when she's regulating herself, she is a kind, cool big sister. She helps organize the mani pedis and the crafts and the girly girls love it.

Oh, their hair stylist hanger-on Ronnie and main beard is here, lugging around water like a regular cabana boy. He sure is their toy, isn't he?

Andrea is here now too. I think this is the same Andrea nanny, or is it? She seems to be incredibly close to Ashley. I'm so lost, are they sisters, BFFs? I had no idea there was a connection between Andrea and Ashley.

The boys and their three or four-odd friends start a scavenger hunt with the A's. They're so cute with the war paint and camouflage. If they cover them all in paint and never show the boys in the same frame, you'll never notice Collin is gone. Typical teen boy stuff, like daring each other to eat a worm.  Aw, Collin would have loved this.

All the girls can do is complain that the boys are making noise. They're having fun! Geez! The girls are nothing if not obnoxious. Not only do they seem to do everything they can to ruin the boys' fun, but once the boys are actually having fun, they resent it. It's sad the animosity that has built up, mostly on their end. For the boys' part, they seem far less annoyed with their sisters, and were even pointing out earlier how cool Hannah is. Incidentally, Hannah is the one complaining the most about them. I wonder if she felt guilty afterward. Probably not.

Poor Alexis, she admits this is not her thing and she would rather be down with the boys. But her mother, as is her right, has decided her genitals dictate that she will have her toes painted for her birthday, so alas, here we are.

I'd rather be down with the boys too, they're having a blast on their scavenger hunt, using a compass and finding all the clues. "America!" Aaden shouts as he finds a clue. They're so funny. But he forgot, "F--- yeah!"

Kate can only discuss what she heard about the boys' party, as God forbid she would actually help with any of theirs. Kate was shocked to hear (she didn't actually witness it) Joel took the lead on the scavenger hunt, but, it's okay that he doesn't normally take the lead, as that's just a very normal boy thing, Kate remarks. To not take a leadership role? What in the world is she talking about? Okay, her gender stereotypes are out of control. Girls are bossy and boys are just blind dumb followers? Maybe in her family, because she made it so. She's insane. If anything, for many children it's the opposite, with boys easily falling into leadership roles without opposition, and girls having to be encouraged to take on roles of leadership in a society that has for many years discouraged it or at least made it harder to do so. She's lost her mind.

There's Kate over at the girls party of course, doing the only work I've seen her do this entire time, hand out lemonade. I hope the duchess takes a long rest after that, looked taxing.

Well I'll hand it to Steve, the scavenger hunt he allegedly set up is legit. One clue they have to cut out of a tree, another they have to wade into a creek to get it. Kiwis just intuitively know cool bushwhacking stuff to do like this I think.

They have a creek on their property? I never remember seeing this! What a lost opportunity to get a canoe or kayak and have hours and hours of fun every summer. An idyllic childhood is at their fingertips right in their own backyard, and mostly for free.

It's approaching time for food, and you can't take Kate out of Kate. She screams at the girls to come over and find their seats immediately. Why? Why can't they meander over and sit down like a normal party? She's so high strung and ridiculous, there's no way these kids are going to put up with much of her as adults. Naturally the boys are eating their meal totally separate out in the woods, and Aaden has learned what every growing child should learn, that food tastes so much better cooked over an open fire. Unfortunatly, this lesson wasn't thanks to his mom or dad, but his nanny.

The girls are probably doing glitter, the boys say, which is probably true. "You know what man glitter is? Sawdust!" one of their friends says. Heh! I love their friends, too!

Can Kate please stop hovering over the girls during their filet minot meal yammering on? They're 13 for gosh sakes, nobody wants Mommy there! I don't have any problem if she's there for the party, but hang back with your friends and watch, you're not just one of the girls. Sheesh.

I'm scratching my heads a little over the girls party. There are only five girlfriends there, which is less than two friends per girl, and they all fit easily around one table. But the tent is set up more for a party of 20, with several tables, chairs, and tablecloths. Did a bunch of people not show up? Weird. The demographic of their friends is interesting, too. Mostly nerds with glasses. I don't think these girls are all that popular--filming doesn't necessarily make you the toast of the school by any means. But as long as they are nice friends, that's what's important. I'd put money on these boys being far more popular, their friends are definitely the cool guys. And no surprise, as they are kind, easy going and funny, unlike the girls usually.

At least they finally come together for cake and ice cream, though separate cakes. The cake for the girls is double the size of the boys' little cake. Sheesh. The boys' cake is super cool though, in the shape of a campfire. The girls' cake is so pink I couldn't tell you what it's about.

Happy birthday to Collin? Who's Collin??? And what kind of facility doesn't allow a child to have a birthday visit and party? F that. Kate reads her PR statement, she is comforted that Collin is receiving exactly what he needs, and that hasn't changed. Yeah, not much is changing with Collin--he ain't coming home. She admits this is the second birthday without him, and for those not paying close attention, I think that knowledge is going to hit them like a ton of bricks. Second birthday without your son? Woman, get off the camera and get your priorities back out of whack. Outrageous.

It's "bittersweet." What is sweet about your child being gone for over a year? There is nothing sweet about this. They can't do anything without realizing Collin is missing. Eh, Kate seems to be getting along just fine without him, I don't get any sense any of this is painful for her. She only finally said something, and she should, because she opened the barn door and everyone got pissed she never closed the loop on it. Only, this was not the closure everyone was seeking here at all. If anything, her statement only raised more questions, and provided no indication of when the end will be in sight, as people naturally want to know. Dolt.

I'm glad they're coming together again for archery tag. Watch some kids you don't know play archery tag. You guessed it, nothing interesting happens. Why the holy F is Kate playing? God, go away!!! They are not toddlers where it's appropriate to get right in there and play with them. Leave them alone to have fun with their friends and go watch with your adult friends. I cannot remember a single parent my own or my friends ever butting into our parties like this, not at this age. It would be bizarre. I wonder what their friends think of her helicoptering, it has to be annoying.

Pool time, and all the girls can do is complain about the boys, who are doing nothing wrong. Kate says the boys were off the wall. Because they splashed each other a little? Please. The girls bail on the pool, to which I say good riddance. Kate says the most developmentally accurate statement I've ever heard her say, in that at this age they talk a big game about how boys and girls are gross, yet there's this little underpinning of curiosity there, like hmmm. Heh, yep that's thirteen all right.

Nighttime arrives, and Kate is still at their damn party like she's also turning 13. Go away.

The girls find a spider in their tent, and embrace all their stereotypes reacting dramatically.

Kate goes around to all the girls and hugs and kisses them goodnight. What about the boys, did they get all this fussing? And does this mean she's finally going to leave their party? Go already!

Meanwhile, the boys sneak into the girls tent with bull horns. Lol. Kate goes on about how she had just got them settled into bed and now they're going to be all crazy again. What's the big deal? Let them run around a bit while you go to bed. They're not toddlers, you can close your eyes and leave them be, with a few ground rules (no pool, stay in the tents area), and they'll be fine. She really is a classic helicopter parent, still thinking she has to tuck her toddlers in at night and keep a close eye on them all the time. It's obnoxious and strange. Kate makes some remark about all the girls taking showers and how long it took. I never remember taking a shower at somebody else's house for just a one-night sleepover, that's kind of odd.

Kate says, well, maybe she'll consider another party next year, if she's alive. I don't find that joke funny. Especially in light of the constant advertisement in the corner of this episode for Princess Diana: Tragedy or Treason?, which I guess must be TLC's contribution to the endless stream of documentaries out this summer as we approach the 20th anniversary of Diana's death. Her son Harry turned thirteen weeks after his mum died, and twenty years later is still crushed over losing her. The things Kate jokes about are not funny, and the things she finds no humor in are usually hilarious.

Where we you when Diana died? I vividly remember it was a Saturday night, and like normal kids Prince William's age, I had two or three girlfriends over and we were hanging out, giggling and doing whatever it is teen girls do. We had the T.V. on and watched as the news scrolled by at the bottom, then interrupted the program. I went to tell my mom something bad had happened to Princess Diana, and I remember it seemed like only a few minutes later Peter Jennings showed up to announce she was dead. Even at my age I clearly remember saying, "Oh my gosh the poor boys!"

Twenty years later, after they have broken their silence this year about how they really feel (still crushed) I'm still saying those poor boys. I wish them lots of help, whether it's therapy or some other outlet, so they can finally process so much of which they say now they never did. Their mum would have wanted them to find closure with this and be happy, and I think they know that.

Kate's still out with all the kids, freaking out over a snake they found. For the tenth time for goodness sake go away and leave the kids alone. The boys remark that Alexis was showing off about the snake, picking it up, and she never would have done so if it weren't for their friend Luke. Lol, nice. She need not fear though, for all the tomboys I've known growing up who are straight, me being one of them, they eventually end up in surprisingly stable and healthy relationships with men, and early on. I wonder if it's because while all the other girls were off with girls, we spent a lot of time getting to know boys without the baggage of a romance. Which means our social skills with boys got really good really fast, because we've had a lot of practice. So by the time we were teens we knew what boys are all about while they are still a mystery to other girls. It does not surprise me Lex is apparently one of the first to show an interest in a boy, and I think she will do well with the opposite sex like other tomboys I've known. I would love to see her have something to one-up the other girls for once, like the best boyfriend. Crossing my fingers.

The boys adored the party. That's sweet. It looks like the girls loved it too. All in all it was a great party despite the gender stereotypes and poor Lex really wanting to hang with the boys. I doubt Kate noticed that other than buying all the camping equipment and the archery tag, this was a very economical party--and the kids seemed to love it the best of all their past parties.

Kate takes the time to blah blah on and on about herself and how in five years she's not sure if she'll still be single. The kids are annoyed she is single. Judging by this party, probably because they want to see her off with a boyfriend and out of their damn hair. Sorry, was anyone asking about Kate and her love life? I thought this was about the children's birthday. Also, in five years? She'll still be single.

I love the drone shots of the property. Really exposes her lie re:losing all those trees in that freak blizzard several years ago.

"Free speech is great, but where are those who question the validity of such defamatory accusations?"

I know a lot of gossip is false, but much of it turns out to be true. I've read celebrity gossip for years, and Josh Duggar's molestations, Bill Cosby's treatment of women, and Caitlyn Jenner's transgender lifestyle were rumors before they were proven true.

Thanks for the recap. I can't stand Kate's favortism toward the girls. A woman at my church favors boys. It's just odd.

What is up with Kate barging in on all the kids' activities? I saw a preview on the TLC Facebook page for this episode, and it was the boys sneaking up on the girls with the air horns, and it was obvious Kate knew about it and was just hanging around, waiting for it to happen so she could freak out for the cameras. Giving the girls hugs, asking what time they were setting their alarms for (at a slumber party??? Who sets an alarm at a slumber party?) and just lingering on forever until finally the boys blasted the horn. It was just way too obvious, and it's getting more and more obvious that she's inserting herself into things that should just be the kids because she can't handle them being the center of attention. I think most of her freak-outs are fake, just a way to get the cameras focused on her. She said she won't let her kids win, and I think she's taking that to the extreme. She's competing with them in life now, not just gaga ball, and it's creepy.

It's easy to believe negative stories about Kate because of the way she treats them on camera. When the show came back in 2014, she admitted that she doesn't let them win. Now we see her being very ugly--and very competitive--toward them.
***********
Because Kate was overly competitive with her children on camera that makes it easy to believe she zip tied a child, locked him in a windowless room for days on end and withheld food? Wow. I hope you aren't overly competitive with your children given your Olympic-level leaping ability!

LOL! Gives a whole new meaning to a game of "cornhole". Sorry, I couldn't resist because growing up in Jersey who knew that there was a bean bag toss games called corn hole!

Great detailed recap, Admin. I watched on the TLC website and didn't find it as bad as the other two episodes. I think this was because it was more realistic, at home and not doing out-of-the-ordinary things for the average family. I agree Collin's absence put a damper on it for me, and I also did not like if her "if I'm still alive" remarks. Many people will die of cancer, car accidents and a whole list of things this coming year so don't be so blase because, horrors, you have some teenage kids.

The boy/girl split was sad, since all of the kids could have fun camping. They all enjoyed archery and the cake and should have been swimming in the POOL. I think the girls act how Kate has trained them with the exception of Alexis. And yeah, maybe they took showers for the chlorine or felt hot after archery but it was one night sleeping outdoors, geez. And alarms, weird. Kate is way too much a helicopter mom- didn't she get the memo when the twins told her off for butting when she made the garden stones with an inside joke engraved on them?

I seriously doubt she gave that swing set away. The company that picked it up advertises that they pick up the trash you don't want and take it to the dump for a small fee. On his FB page he acknowledges that they appeared on K+8. I do hope she did give it away but with her habit of lying I don't think so.

I missed the rotter comment, but she's going to donate a rotted set? Lol what the hell. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on this one, but who she was giving it to was rather convoluted. I think it was a relative of a friend.

On two past episodes, when Jon still existed, they went into detail about how important that swingset was because it was a gift from Jon's late father. Jon himself took it apart and back together again when they moved to the McMansion because he didn't want to leave it behind. It was one of the few connections his dad and his kids had. I doubt it was rotting. Getting rid of it was a big F you to Jon.

Thanks for the recap Admin. I don't understand why they needed security (never mind the 'head' of security) when all the activity took place on her own property. A creek?, I've never heard that mentioned before. A scavenger hunt and a cookout over an open fire sounds like this would appeal to 13 year olds, boys and girls alike; at least it does to Girl Guides. I don't know why she feels to need to hover all the time; it must be for camera time. Maybe be around in the background while the cooking over the fire takes place but not in their faces. Whoever heard of everyone takes a shower on a sleepover night - not in my neck of the woods. Separate cakes when they share the same birthday, one cake to highlight they shared the womb together along with Collin, would be more appropriate I think.

I didn't watch but have enjoyed the recap. One question though, did the kids say this was the best birthday ever? I hope not, how could they when this is the second time the five have had a birthday without Collin.

Admin, this is another terrific recap! Thanks for the time and effort.

So Steve is the "head" of security? I imagine the rest of the operatives were in the woods wearing camouflage gear like the boys, so as not to be spotted. When you're working for a huge star like TFW, you have to use every tool in your arsenal.

Even at their special 13th birthday party, the boys couldn't manage to get their mother's attention? That's pathetic. I'm surprised the story editor didn't suggest she at least make an appearance at their party -- maybe even adding her own clue to the hunt (written by someone else, of course). But it sounds like the boys had a blast -- perhaps because Fun Sucker TFW was nowhere near them.

So here's Milo on Kate IG tonight, spinning her version of K8 as only she can do:

sarahgrove4@kateplusmy8 keep smiling! Feel better soon boys! After reading all of the comments on everyone of your posts with people asking about Collin, I know how hard this can be. I wish everyone knew how it effects the entire family when a child is struggling. My 9 year old has ADHD, DMDD, autism spectrum, and more. She is currently in inpatient care for the third time. This is what is best for her right now, to get the help she needs, and best for our family. It is hard to understand, keep up the amazing work mama for your family!!
patriciachow0901Hope your boys heal fast, God Bless :)

miloandjack2016@sarahgrove4 I think you hit the nail on the head here! Your openess about your OWN family situation makes this very understandable. Because lil is known about Kate's circumstances w/Collin...people go to speculating...assuming...spreading rumors and all manner of dire stories! People need to stop & realize...This is entirely @kateplusmy8 's call...her decision w/help of expert medical advice. She's done a great job as a single mom getting her kids this far. She'll continue to do what's best as each day passes. That I am confident of! #RespectForMom ❤

sarahgrove4@miloandjack2016 thank you for your kind words. I shared my personal experience with my daughter in hopes it would help others here understand that a situation like this, is very hard on the entire family. Especially with @kateplusmy8 being in the public eye, she is protecting her son from everyone asking about him. What everyone can do is pray for her family, instead of bringing her down for making the best decision for her son, and family. I have a family of 6, I understand having lots of kiddos and always doing what is best for them 😊

miloandjack2016@sarahgrove4 Well said! @kateplusmy8 has acknowledged that she has felt very alone in struggling w/this for yrs. And of course...having 6 same age as close as they are...of course, they miss their brother! Entire family is affected! I remain hopeful and positive that encouraging better days lie ahead as Collin gets exactly what he needs to function at his best! Thanks for your insightful input!

Milo likes to pretend that she's never read Kate's journals. But she most definitely has.

It was sad to see the swing set go. Jon had been sentimental about it since the set was a gift from his dad, as I recall. When the family
moved into the Kompound, Jon lovingly took the swing set apart bolt by bolt, and then reassembled it on the new property.

The only thing Khate hates parting with is her own money.

What is up with Kate barging in on all the kids' activities?

Khate and Jamie even ate steak dinner with the girls.
I mean, c'mon. Pry your botoxed mug away from the camera, Khate, and let the kids shine. Or at least breathe.

About that stream -- back when Jon was alive they filmed a show when he took the kids to that stream to fish. However, it was a very hot day and the kids rebelled and went back home to their pool. There was talk of how pissed the producer was, but Jon just shrugged. He already had one foot out the door and wasn't about to force the family to film when they really didn't want to.

C'mon!

I'm betting this was catered. We would have never heard the end of it from Kate if she whipped up this dinner for the girls. So, go be a normal mother and have the caterers serve the adults their food inside or at least on the porch and leave the kids alone. You can even set up shop within eyeshot of the tents, but give them some privacy to girl talk!

She's REALLY pushing it with the kids. The problem she's going to run into is when she's this overbearing and intruding on their space, it may only make them rebel more to the point where they're not going to want her around at all. Show a teen a healthy respect for their privacy and time with their friends and most will let you in from time to time.

She was dreading having anything to do with the boys, and was really glad Andrea and Ashley took it over. It's really sad.

Remember when it was Collin's special day and of course, just like on Joel's day and Aaden's day, only Jon went, Kate choosing to only participate in the girls' special days? Anyways I vividly remember Katr cuddling with a girl tup on the floor and Collin and Jon were about to leave and poor sweet Collin went to his mom and asked "Mommy will you miss me?". I don't think Kate even bothered to look up at him and answered without much feeling "I sure will". God, that scene is a hundred times more heartbreaking when you see where things are today.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

I think the hovering is just for the show, so TFW can get her camera time. I suspect she also thinks it makes her look like a good mother.
Plus, I think she's always afraid one of them will spill the beans about something, so she likes to be within ear shot, especially with cameras rolling.

Look at how she parented toddlers, for pete's sake. She'd leave them unattended for hours at a time when supervision was essential for their physical and emotional well-being.
But we're supposed to believe that now she wants to be a part of everything? Most of her Twitter and Insta activity takes place in her bedroom sanctuary, so she sure doesn't seem to be a helicopter mom at home.

These moments can add up for a child, pick, pick picking away at his psyche until it breaks. And this is just what we saw on camera. Chances are if we saw several moments like that on camera, there were several more that occurred off camera.

&&&

I didn't mention it in the recap, but I thought that was weird and regimented. I was thinking maybe some of the kids had something the next morning like parents picking them up for sports practice and that's why they were setting alarms. But couldn't Kate set HER alarm then come wake them when breakfast is ready? An alarm on a sleepover really kills the mood.

Re Outer Banks evacuation, full story and latest accurate info is on facebook pages for the two electric co-ops serving Ocracoke and Hatteras islands, Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative and Tideland Electric Membership Corporation.
There is a new bridge being built to replace old Bonner bridge across the Oregon Inlet, which is between Nags Head and Hatteras Island. Early Thursday am, a steel support was being put into place and it hit the three big cables that carry the power from the mainland to Hatteras, in an area where the cables are coming up from being under water under the existing bridge to then be carried to overhead transmission lines. No electric power to Hatteras or Ocracoke except by emergency generators. Electric coops telling people to turn off air conditioning, hot tubs, and hot water heaters, conserve water. Mandatory evacuation of non residents from Ocracoke ordered Thursday and completed Saturday. Mandatory evacuation of non residents from Hatteras island ordered Friday am. It's a mess, economic hit is going to be bad. It does NOT affect the northern towns: Duck, Corolla, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Nags Head. Roanoke Island and Manteo are not affected.

The boys definitely seem to have a crew. Their relationship with their friends seemed the healthiest, with all of them very close, joking all the time, ribbing each other, having a blast. The best thing that can happen to these kids is to have a core group of support in friends. They are going to need a core group of friends as they move into adulthood and start wrestling with everything that happened during childhood.

Layla said...

Admin--yes, Kate is SCARED. The kids are getting older, their unique personalities are developing, and viewers like the kids more than they like her. I think she's scared that someday soon, someone is going to want to film the kids without her. She thinks if she inserts herself into every frame and pitches fits or complains to draw attention to herself, she's keeping viewers from taking as much notice of the kids. Her time for being in control is nearly over. The kids could leave her behind very soon, and she knows it.

She's dropping hints to get herself a dating show, but what if some network thinks that a dating show starring Mady would be more interesting? Mady has a strong personality, she's young and pretty, and she doesn't have all the baggage that Kate brings. People might watch just to see what she's like outside the family dynamic. Make no mistake about it, Kate is locked in competition with her own kids. Competition for screen time, competition for attention, and soon possibly in competition for a show. This could get very ugly. She will not let her kids win.

CC said...

Obviously Kate had them set their alarms at a sleepover because she herself is sleeping in. No cameras, no reason for her to bother getting up.

---------

I still think it was taken straight to the dumpster and not given to a friends relative (snort). Since when has Kate given anything to anyone for free? It either gets thrown out or she sells for money. Remember when Kate got all of that free meat on the show and she turned around and SOLD it to her own brother. She couldn't even show generosity to her brother who" took punishment" for her growing up.

CC (#40), you got it. Once the cameras went off, I bet Andrea was on duty until all the guests left the next morning. We know TFW didn't make filet mignon for that whole gang, and she sure as heck wasn't going to be making them breakfast.

It needs to be said again: TFW's home is a film set when the show is in production. Every mouthful of food was paid for by TLC, and likely prepared by the crew. And once the filming ended, the crew was completely in charge of cleanup. TFW did not have to lift a finger.
No need to wake up early when there was nothing to take care of.

I'm wondering about Cara's absence in this episode. It's been clear for many years that she doesn't want film--even back before the first cancellation she'd lie on the interview couch with her back to the camera and Mady would talk. Then, once the show came back, she sat and picked lint. But this is the first episode where she never showed up at all. The TLC contracts published in Robert's book specify that everyone has to be present, even if they are sick. That statement from the TLC producer mentioned schedules--including the Gosselins'--being a factor in the "no announcement" situation. Maybe Cara has something else going on during the tups' party, and refused to change her plans. If she refuses to participate in filming, in addition to Collin's absence, then how would they explain away TWO kids' absences? Kate+8-1 (and now minus 1 more) is just not going to work. If they try to force her--well, they know that Cara will be a legal adult in less than 15 months, and if she wants to speak out and blow the lid on the whole operation, they can't stop her. Maybe backing away from this situation was the safest course of action for TLC. She certainly seems to resent the intrusion into her privacy. I don't recall her being in any IG or even twitter photos in years. Even this vacation to NC--someone said it was Kate and 6 of her kids. Not 7. I think Cara is done.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

Gigi Be (#41), even if TFW was so generous as to give something away, she sure wouldn't go an inch out of her way to do it. She'd tell the person to come over and take it apart themselves, and to be careful not to trample her lawn while doing it.

Wasn't there a glimpse or two of Cara? I seem to recall her wearing a ruffled top romper but maybe I'm wrong. I have no memory of her on the couch but I think she might have agreed with Mady that the tups were equally 'bad and good' However I watched fastforwarding quickly and nothing memorable sticks out with Cara.

JM said...

Cara was in this episode but very briefly at the beginning, both times on the couch. Its during the swingset drama, they cut to Cara and she says something like, no one asked me about it, I came outside and it was gone. Then near the end of the segment on the swingset, her and Mady are on the couch discussing the swingset, agreeing they didn't really use it anymore and it was old but sad to see it go (paraphrasing here). I never saw Cara in the background anywhere in the portions of the birthday party and set up for it, only Mady. And she is not anywhere in the additional shopping clip, its only Mady, Jamie and TFW; it only shows those 3 walking across the parking lot to the store.

Thank you, Gigi Be for posting about Jana!

I am a huge supporter of her. To think that her parents have put her in the position she is in is abomination! She could of already graduated college, had several years into a career and dating, ON HER OWN!

It infuriates me that her parents went to Hawaii last week for a anniverary trip and left her in charge taking care of all the minor kids and the kudult boys.

She has so much potential and the parents hold her there like a mental hostage because of Bill Gothards doctrine.

It just can't be Bibical what they are doing to Jana and John David.

JD wanted to be a commercial pilot and have a career. Jim Bob said, to his Adult Son, NO. It will take you away from your family. But JD got his pilot's license and Jim Bob got a plane. He went to this expense to keep his son on a short leash.

He is doing the same thing to his almost 30 year old daughter!

Michelle take care of your OWN minor children!

Cara's absence is huge. I can't think of any other episode in which any of the kids was not there (other than after Collin was sent away). They were filmed sick, vomiting, sleeping...but they were all filmed for every episode. That's what made Collin's absence so noticeable, and that's what makes Cara's absence so obvious. After 200+ episodes, over a span of 10 years, this is the first-ever unexplained absence.

But Cara and Mady are stuck together with glue. One episode I think Mady stated they don't like being apart. I doubt she would go against Mady- she has been seen to have a temper- RV trip, yelling at the pumpkin smash game, rebuffing her mother's hugs- but I would still think she has broken ties with Jon, sadly. But I can see her going against her mother's will.

Cara could have been at another event, but the fact is, none of the kids had ever been away for the filming of any of the 200+ episodes--with the exception of C who was institutionalized. The contracts we have seen state that every family member must be present for filming. Cara has been involved in sports for several years, but had never skipped out on filming...and then immediately the producer from TLC makes a statement about schedules (including the Gosselins'). It seems awfully coincidental.

I think that Cara is not only done with filming but she's completely over her disfunctional family ( mom especially). I believe that Cara is counting down the months till she's 18 and then she'll split . I think Cara especially is looking forward to her freedom as she always has been more independent. I have always found it disturbing that none of these kids EVER, EVER had something more important to do during filming. It's highly suspicious, and I think they've missed out on a lot because of it. Whether it was sleepover, practice, or just hanging with friends, it's not normal to forego these things for filming.

Somehow I really doubt this was something Cara just could not miss--I think this was just picking something better over filming, whether that something was mandatory. And it would be darn normal to pick something else over filming, and it sounds like she's finally realized there's nothing Kate can do about it.

I think what was interesting is Cara totally absented herself from Mady's rather good presentation at the party as Mady set it up and organized the girls among the different beauty stations. Seems odd Cara wouldn't be right there with her. She didn't help out with the boys either.

Cara also drove the John Deere from one activity to the next. So maybe she did help as much as Mady but did not want to be filmed ??? There have been other times when she is not present as much as Mady. I remember once Kate said Cara had selected stuffed green peppers for dinner but was not at the table

The contracts we have seen state that every family member must be present for filming. Cara has been involved in sports for several years, but had never skipped out on filming...and then immediately the producer from TLC makes a statement about schedules (including the Gosselins'). It seems awfully coincidental.
***************************
I've said before that Khate is technically in breach of the contract and for that reason alone TLC could discontinue filming. They had to let the Colin situation slide, even if she didn't keep them informed of the events that led to his being removed from the home, just to avoid being labeled as the bad guy/opening themselves up to criticism re: the role filming the kids from a young age played in his problems. But if Cara has taken a stand and said no more filming EVAH, then TLC is perfectly justified in saying no more filming while spinning the story to hint at more filming down the road.
**********************
Somehow I really doubt this was something Cara just could not miss--I think this was just picking something better over filming, whether that something was mandatory. And it would be darn normal to pick something else over filming, and it sounds like she's finally realized there's nothing Kate can do about it.
***************************
Even more than Mady, I think Cara has Khate on the run. She's always struck me as a deeper thinker than Mady and wasn't she the one that didn't throw Jon under the bus on the Today Show (not so sure about the View)? She and Jon were close and share a love of sports. So even if she waited until the TLC trucks were coming thru the gate to tell Khate she wasn't filming and implied she would consider residing elsewhere, what's Khate going to do? Can't spank her, can't throw her in a room and ziptie her.... even if Khate took her phone as punishment, there's still other phones she could use to call Jon while Khate's jockeying for screen time. Better to put a good face on it and hope her presence isn't missed with all the kids running around for the birthday party. Cause what's important is getting the episode in the can/getting that paycheck, then dealing with the fallout with TLC afterwords. Because you know Jon is just waiting for another chance to file for custody and as the kids grow older, one or more may decide they want to live with Jon.

Susan1956 (#71), when TLC is no longer in the picture, I think TFW will happily dump some of the kids with Jon. Since J and A have consistently seen their father, I could she her getting rid of them and their growing teenage-boy appetites in a heartbeat. After what happened with C, there is nothing beneath her. Nothing.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

&&&&

I think the whole thing was catered by craft services. You could see an unidentified white truck parked right near the girls' tent. Dead ringer for craft services. I wouldn't be surprised if they cooked most of the boys' food too, and Ashley and Andrea just heated them up over the fire. After all it could take hours to cook all of that from scratch, and where was all the perishable food sitting while they were all over the property doing their scavenger hunt? Please.

Likely everyone ate the same food, cast and crew alike.

FYI said...

===============

That was one thing about the scavenger hunt that bothered me. They were burying food in bags, hanging food from trees, etc. etc.

I thought they were wild animals in the woods--Kate has mentioned skunks, possums, etc. etc. Plus birds could have attacked the bag hanging from the tree.

I don't get how they thought the food would be safe from predators.

The more and more you think about it, it does sound quite bogus that they would actually hide food around the property. I could see hiding utensils and similar stuff, but actual food?

FlimsyFlamsy said...

Admin (#73), but you know the fans think Supermom TFW worked her fingers to the bone preparing (and paying for) all that food.
And since the craft services truck wasn't featured in the episode, TLC is complicit in perpetuating that myth.

Kind of strange, though they did hide it what seemed like a few hours before, and as long as you seal it, it's unlikely much animals will get into it over a short period of time. Still, it looked warm out, and they were eating perishable things like hotdogs. GROSS.

Those parents are idiots. This reminds me of the way TFW treated Collin with the verbal beat down about Hannah's hair. And the thing that she told Collin was to say, I've seen it better. WTH?

What was this? Jana had to give her best possession to show that she forgave Jessa for treating her like ****? All this does is motivate Jessa to repeat her behavior so she can get more of Jana's possessions with Mommy and Daddy's blessings. WTH!

I could see her dumping certain kids to Jon once she can no longer film them (Alexis?) BUT in doing so she would sever ties with said child/ren. So basically once she's done (she loves saying that doesn't she?), she's done. Also, if a kid chooses to live with Jon I can also see Kate being done with him/her.

I just had a thought: Hannah is one of the usual 4 who see Jon isn't she? Could that be why she is no longer Kate's golden child?

~ Cara probably has to attend a week-long field hockey camp during the summer. Once you get to high-school level sports, you pretty much need to go to camps and such to work on your skills if you want to see playing time. My kids who played almost every sport between them all, always had to go to various camps over the summer.

~ Kate did almost nothing for this party. Even though this was a backyard party, it still cost a fortune that most families could never afford. Everything was brought in by outside companies and lots of new things were ordered and rented for it. There was a team of people who set up, took down, purchased, cooked, and cleaned up the food. Friends were flown in and paid by TLC. Who here has EVER thrown a party like that for their kids?

~ I think at some point, the kid's school tuition was thrown into the contract. If Kate was smart, she would have it put in that their school would be paid in full through graduation.

~ Because the house and grounds are used for filming, I wonder if it is one HUGE tax write-off. Every improvement and also upkeep might be able to be claimed as a business expense. Also clothes, cars, etc.

~ The cost of upkeep on that beautiful property has to be astronomical. It is beautifully maintained and there is no way Kate could do that on her own. Everything is weeded, pruned, edged, mowed, new bark mulch has been spread. It is simply gorgeous.

I think Cara helped but the focus was not her- it was the tups' birthday. Mady does seem to enjoy being filmed more than Cara. She was friendly and helpful but I'm sure Cara was too : she was in various locations, driving the kids on the John Deere, at the cake celebration and I saw her near the white tents so maybe she helped set those up and in the background, maybe food prep. Both twins were dressed up nicely.Kate was more visible of course with her narration, joining the games, delegating all jobs and her usual shrieking over a spider and a little snake.

Yes, Kate had Ronnie, Steve, Ashley, Andrea, Jamie, the mani/pedi woman, the other dark-haired lady and the archery tag crew. The kids were old enough not to need all that and do some work for their parties themselves. The boys did their own tents while Kate had a hired tent company for the girls.

Idea for next year, Kate: pizza and sleepover inside with movies and games.Have slots for boys and girls to swim separately if that's what they choose.

OT: Hatteras Island and Ocracoke info. We are going to Nags Head next week! Here's the latest update from CHEC:

"Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative’s (CHEC) continued transmission restoration efforts last night revealed good news. Further testing at the site of the Bonner Bridge incident indicates that only two of the three underground transmission cables sustained damage.

The cooperative continues its execution of two simultaneous solutions to restore transmission service. The underground solution is to continue the excavation and de-watering process, digging to greater depths to reach and splice the second damaged cable. Splicing on the first damaged cable is complete. Installation efforts began early this morning on the second solution – building a new overhead transmission line that will run from the south end of the Bonner Bridge to meet the cooperative’s existing overhead transmission line.

Restoring permanent transmission service as quickly and safely as possible is CHEC’s top priority, which is why workers are aggressively pursuing both solutions to determine which will be completed first. The timeline for a complete repair ranges from one to two weeks.

The damage to the transmission cables occurred at the south side of the Bonner Bridge early on the morning of July 27 when PCL Construction, the company building the new Bonner Bridge, accidentally drove a steel casing through the cooperative’s transmission cables. The cooperative is supplying power to the island via permanent and portable diesel generators, and while it pursues the permanent solutions, CHEC is concurrently working to expand the temporary generation service on Hatteras Island in order to accommodate a staged reentry of visitors. A mandatory evacuation remains in effect for all visitors to Hatteras Island at this time.

CHEC appreciates the continued support of its members, as well as Gov. Roy Cooper and other officials from local and state agencies.

For further updates, follow Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative on Facebook and Twitter and tune in to Radio Hatteras (99.9/101.5)."

Can't you picture TFW drumming her French tips on the table, trying to think up some extravagant idea for the next birthday, in hopes of getting an episode commitment out of TLC? ***********************
I think TLC definitely pays for mowing and landscaping when an episode is filmed on the property, but not year round. As we've seen in Robert's book, Khate will make the kids do weeding, etc. in very hot weather.

I've come around to the general belief that Khate has a LOT of money stashed away and she uses the $40,000 per episode TLC money for living expenses. She and the family still seemed to live well during the years they were off TV, so it will be interesting to see if anything changes if TLC does not film again or just films once a year.

Then they selected plants at a nursery and a crew came out for the actual planting. That's when Kate ordered the plaques that were unappreciated by the twins due to her butting in to a joke they had with Marley. I was surprised Marley was not at the party btw- she is sort of a regular now. Alexis and Collin were the ones who were most into this project.

True. They didn't film at the school, nor show any events there, not even Cara in sports. Why would TLC pay for any of that when it's not being used for filming purposes? I remember a photo of Kate during the divorce when she was making copies at a store and when zoomed in, you could see the amount that was listed as a tuition expense and what she needed per year to pay for their school costs.

Robert printed some of the TLC contracts in his book, and nowhere does any agreement regarding the kids' tuition appear. There would have been newer contracts after the show came back, but it was already far less popular, so why would TLC throw in a decade or more of private school tuition (along with salaries) for a show that was not very successful? That makes no sense at all.

I think we all agree with Susan 1956--Kate has made millions off those kids, and she has it stashed away somewhere. She was able to weather almost 3 years of near-unemployment and still maintain their lifestyle. She just doesn't want to admit that her desire to be on TV is motivated by her ego, not by financial need.

I'm not so sure either article passes the sniff test. Although both articles are dated July 25th, they read like Jon is currently trying to obtain joint physical and legal custody of the children. Which according to other sources happened last summer/early fall. Unless he has newly discovered evidence or concerns, he would be a fool to drag Khate back into a courtroom so soon as judges hate that. The only reason Jon would have to depose Skeevie is if he could answer questions re: treatment/abuse of the children. And even then, it'd probably be best if he was hooked up to a polygraph at the same time (I know it would never happen/polygraphs aren't necessarily accepted in courts, but good luck getting Skeevie to be honest). Did the audition in NC fail? Is Khate so desperate to keep her name in the news that she would 'leak' this? Even if she is, I don't see her being booked to "set the record straight" this week. Heck, she didn't even get a update/farewell tour this time around.

Jon would do well to bide his time to see how Khate handles this 2nd cancellation and to let the 5 remaining sextuplets mature. According to our friend Google and the PA Supreme Court, there is no magic age at which a child of divorced parents in PA can decide he wants to live with the other parent. The court's decision is based on the following:

The Pennsylvania Superior Court stated:

“The weight to be accorded a child’s preference varies with the age, maturity and intelligence of that child, together with the reasons given for the preference. Moreover, as children grow older, more weight must be given to the preference of the child.” Wheeler v. Mazur, 793 A.2d 929 (Pa. Super. 2002).

Most judges is more likely to consider a child’s choice if it’s based upon sound, mature reasons, versus a preference that seems to be based upon momentary whim or impulse.

Khate won't be able to keep them little forever!

All this conversation about childhood birthday parties jump started my memory. My son (in his 40's now) called during my reminiscing. I asked him if he remembered any special birthday celebrations.

He attended a school with classmates who did have nice and inventive parties. Horses or tents or filet mignon were not involved though.

Son had an almost instant response. The office where his dad worked got deliveries of some toxic liquid used for the (old-style) copier. The boxes were very sturdy cardboard and had a criss-cross reenforcement inside. Dad would bring the boxes home and tape them securely closed. A strong cube about 2' square was created. Over some months we had saved dozens.

Son and I think it was his 8th birthday party. We turned the kids loose in a big open basement. There were colored markers available. Those kids made bridges, houses, forts, towers and tunnels. The artwork was delightful.

I could hardly convince them to take a break for the simple snack lunch.

Son remembered and he was pretty certain that the friends who attended the party would also remember.

I couldn't tell you what we eventually did with all those boxes, but they stayed around for quite awhile and were used again and again.

I think there is a lesson here for someone like Kate.

IMO it's their MOM who should grow up.

The kids wanted to go rollerblading for their 10th birthday, but they weren't allowed to because KATE wanted a carnival.

They wanted a sleepover for their 11th birthday and I'm sure they meant the kind of sleepover that their friends have, not staying in a hotel with not enough beds because TLC needed to create drama for the show.

This year they wanted to go camping in the backyard, which they've done twice before and the kids enjoyed it, which is probably the reason they wanted to do it again. And that's what they should have done.

But the kids' birthdays are NEVER about them. They're always about their mother, who thinks that every birthday party has to top the previous year's party. IT DOESN'T.

~ The cost of upkeep on that beautiful property has to be astronomical. It is beautifully maintained and there is no way Kate could do that on her own. Everything is weeded, pruned, edged, mowed, new bark mulch has been spread. It is simply gorgeous.

The landscapers even do beautiful striping in the yard when they cut the grass. You can see the patterns from the aerial shots of the grass. These are professionals, and for a property that size, they likely charge hundreds of dollars every time they come out, I'm betting they're out minimum weekly.

I remember something that Matt Roloff said years ago, and it was mentioned here right around the time K+8 was first cancelled. Matt said that "the crazier the chatter, the more attractive you are to film". Something like that. If K+8 was cancelled again (probably just temporarily, but...you never know), Kate may be trying desperately to start up some crazy chatter to goad TLC into more filming. She can't stand life without her beloved cameras, and she wants them back. Now. She will sell any story about herself, Steve, the kids--anything to get her name trending somewhere and get TLC to take notice. Back in 2011 that article would be a big news story. Milo would be tweeting to Kate that she's trending and "still newsworthy!". In 2017, nobody really notices.

Raise a child to value that time with family and friends is more important than balloons and expensive decorations and costly excursions for a bunch of friends, and you just might find yourself with an adult who someday says, "Gosh, Mom and Dad really taught us what mattered, didn't they?"

I think one of the reasons that TFW doesn't sue is because in every story there's probably a small grain of truth. If she were to sue it would open a can of worms that she probably doesn't want opened. All sorts of people could be called to testify and NDAs would be out the window. I just don't believe the zip tie story because if that were going on you'd have to hope that the other kids would have reported it to Jon or talked about it somewhere. But maybe I just want to believe that they're not so scared of her that they wouldn't do whatever they could to protect their brother.

Right. Why assume there's just too much out there to even begin to sue? You could just as easily assume for all that's out there, there's very little that's truly false for her to be able to sue in the first place. Remember, for a public figure the story has to be false. You can't just sue because it's a nasty story.

She does not hesitate to sue, so the idea that she doesn't go after some of the more egregious stories (for instance, the nanny years ago claiming abuse), speaks volumes.

TLC sued Jon over filming which I attribute to her since I don't believe for one second TLC would have done so if she didn't want them to do that, then there was a separate suit for the divorce which was pretty nasty and not just your standard fill out divorce paperwork and move on, then she sued LaFaire, and also sued Jon a second time for the hacking stuff. I don't know, for someone who has never filed a lawsuit, four lawsuits in the span of a couple years seems like a lot to me and does not seem like someone who hesitates to sue.

I read the comments on the second article. I have also worried that Collin was harmed and that's why he was taken away. He does have some problems but they have never been that severe as far as we know. But sometimes issues in mental/behavioral health are exacerbated in puberty and a facility would be recommended. BUT I never heard of a place that would not allow visitors or home visits with supervision if necessary He's a slightly built 13 year old boy. why cant he celebrate his birthday with his co-sextuplets, even if it is at this facility? Has he had visits from either parent or any sibling? Friends and relatives? We don't know.

But then, there's so much we don't know. I have not heard of any reports of 'sighting' of Collin which we do of Kate when she is on vacation. He seems to have vanished.

How can she get a cooking show with her personality? She lives in a great area with the farmlands and Amish heritage. That would be a good premise for a cooking show that hasn't been tapped but she doesn't have the "Q" factor. I was so embarrassed for her when she appeared on Andy Cohen's show and the View. The interview she did with the two delightful teenagers while on the Apprentice was cringe-worthy. Compared to Pioneer Woman/Valerie Bertinelli/Ina Garten, etc., who is she going to invite as a guest to sample the food she has made? Jamie? Ronnie? Purse Boy? I would love to spend time with any of the ladies mentioned above but her - no thank you! I would rather be stuck twelve times looking for a vein for a blood test than to spend an hour with her.

Kate said in the Collin letter in IJWYTK that her love will always be with him, she will always come back and she wants a great life for him. She did admit his defiance but reminded him she is in charge.

Bandmom (193) I was kidding because at one time all she tweeted about was how they were all watching Food Network together and one of the "episodes" was a Chopped style cooking contest. We surmised that she was bucking for a show or at least a slot in one of the celebrity contests (Worst Cook would be right up her alley). She would love to have a cooking show because she fancies herself to be a wonderful cook (the kids consistently rate her meals at a 10). You're right though, she doesn't have what it takes as evidenced by the cooking demo she did at that women's conference (or whatever it was).

Wow, how sad is that? I seem to remember Kate assuring Collin that she'd always return or something like that.
Can you even imagine...

Insert the word heaven and it sounds like he's dead. One of those, "I'll always be watching over you" letters. A long time ago she knew this kid was going to be out of there eventually, and she set the stage all these years.

Read that whole letter to Collin today and tell me Kate wasn't fomenting disappearing Collin back then...

At bare minimum, she was keeping her options open, including banishment.

We said years and years ago she won't hesitate to cut any or all of these children off like an offending appendage just like she did to Jon and so many others. And here we are, she DID IT.
