"I don’t want to mar my children’s glory and subvert their beginnings for my so-called art"

Popular "Mommy blogger" and writer Elizabeth Bastos has packed up shop after realizing (with the help of one concerned grandfather) her posts were intruding on her children's right to privacy.

This comment was particularly insightful, and I think it goes to the heart of all this blogging, vlogging, writing and quest to land a reality tv show using kids:

"There is a hunger in our culture for true stories from the parenting trenches where life is lived mud-flecked and raw."

&&&&&

I think this is true. I think Mommy bloggers CONVINCE themselves there's this hunger to justify themselves. I've heard many say, but if I just went away the fans would be so upset, they'd miss us.

BS. Most wouldn't notice, a few would miss them for a few days or weeks then move on.

I think most people watch and read this stuff because it's out there. If it all went away, people would move on. It's like the channel surfing you do on a lazy weekend. You might land on a cheesy Lifetime movie and enjoy it, but you'd never miss it if it weren't there. There is no public demand to hear about children's poo.

Sally Mann... Yikes.

Never heard of her until now. She does take beautiful pictures. But unfortunately she has exploited her children. It's disgusting.

As a mother I can look at those photos and see nothing but a beautiful innocent child in their most natural state, but am uncomfortable doing so because as a mother they just seem wrong.

She has exposed her children to people who look at a naked child and see it in the most dirty, disgusting way. She failed to protect her children.

I read an interview with the daughter who seems torn apart emotionally. She claims she's okay with the photos but at the same time she had a drinking problem at the age of 13 and a rocky relationship with her mother. I don't think she realizes that it's probably because her mother used her all those years.

I get that the mother sees them just as her beautiful children, and a work of art. But that doesn't justify the exploitation. Every fun act those children had, while living so "freely" naked and unemcumbered by clothing, was looked on by their mother as a way for HER to express herself, and make money. While playing so innocently those children were told to stop and freeze so she could capture the moment in a photo.

As parents we all do that at one time or another, but for ourselves and for them. My children have so many memories that would have gone forgotten if they didn't have photos of those moments. They love looking at pictures of themselves, either candid, capturing a moment of fun, or posed, so we could purposely remember that moment vividly.

Sharing naked photos of your children, no matter how beautiful, or innocent, is wrong. Doesn't matter if the child is okay with it at the moment, as she claims they were, because they don't have the understanding of how those photos can be viewed by others. Not everyone is going to view them as beautiful works of art. And when the child is older they may realize they should not have allowed her to take those photos of them, but it will be too late to do anything about it. Even if the child is okay with it at a later time, it’s wrong. Possibly because of the way they were raised they don’t see the full picture.

I read the mother "protected" her children by not allowing her photo books to be sold in their small town, or be put in the public library in the general area (had to be in a special section??). So obviously she knew that having photos of them available to their peers and neighbors might upset the children. I don't know what she was thinking. And I don't know how those books are allowed to be published. They mentioned some of the pics were violating laws yet they were still published.

Again, as a mom I saw the photos as beautiful and artistic on the surface, but disturbing to view.

Thanks Admin. for the great new topic. I think it's sad that it took the writer's father to bring to her attention that was she was writing invaded the privacy of her children. Thankfully he did and what a great Dad and grandfather to do so.

I agree CC.

No doubt technically Mann has taken really beautiful portraits. Stunning, inspirational. But it should have gone in a treasured family album for only family and close friends to view. And, she shouldn't have posed them. She should have just snapped the photo and if you miss the moment you miss it.

I read somewhere that her manager suggested that she hold off on publishing the photos until her children were adults and had left behind those bodies and who they were at 8 years old.....she refused.

Also, I'm pretty sure her beautiful son Emmett committed suicide in June, that's the obvious conclusion, although no one is saying the cause of death. Not saying the photos contributed to that, who really knows.

Another thought, I'm not sure how much value the children being nude really adds to the photos. She shot several photos of her children clothed that were very appropriate, and equally beautiful. She could have done a whole series of photos of clothed children and I think would have been just as successful, and a whole lot less controversial. They are that technically stunning.

On the topic of the grandfather, reminds me of What Would You Do? Your daughter is exploiting your grandchildren, do you say something? Thankfully he did.

CC said...

As for the mommy blogger, good for her for listening to her father. Unlike Kate, that cut off everyone in her life that disagreed with the exploitation of their children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, etc.

Frankly, I'm sick of all the mommy blogger posts. Sure, when it first came out it was interesting, and when you have kids, tips etc are great.

I could talk about my own kids for hours if anyone would listen, but who would want to listen to that??

But I don't really care to read a someone prattle on about, or look at pics of, "cute little Johnny" painting his body with chocolate pudding. That's one of the reasons I like Pinterest. I can type in something and just scroll through pics to get ideas.

What does everyone think of Sally Mann, who is talked about in the article?
*******
This is a very complex question, I think. I have to research more about Mann and her work, but my prima facie reaction is that she is an artist whose work is powerful, provocative and controversial.
As an amateur photographer, her talent blows me away. Mann's photography is on a rarified level which is only produced by artists who are intrinsically endowed with the ability to see beyond the physical plane to that of the astral, in order to produce subject matter that seems surreal and intangible.
Her photographs are haunting and dystopian and certainly meant to provoke reaction.

Tucker's Mom said...

^^^^^
Whenever a mother invokes this drivel, she's crossed the line into such self-absorption that she will say anything to justify further using her children for her own gain.

Tucker's Mom said...

I think what makes some of Mann's photos disturbing is that she goes beyond capturing children candidly, and posed them provocatively in ways that would hold no context to anyone but an adult.
Covering nipples? Why would an pre-pubescent girl do that if nudity were so natural and free? Same for laying a hand over the vagina while posed like a Rubenesque model for an impoverished bohemian painter in Montmartre.
As an agent provocateur, Mann obviously intended to use children to push the limits of decency.

It does say a lot about the blogger. People were criticizing her for writing about the intervention she got, and decision to cease blogging about her son, which I disagree with.
I think it's important for any and all mommy bloggers who have come to realize that they are oversharing and violating their children's right to privacy, to try to urge other mothers to follow suit.

Hopefully, Mommy Blogging has reached its peak and saturation point. I think many moms saw the incredible success of a handful of mega-mommy blogger and thought perhaps they could have all the money and adulation, too.

IMO, mommy bloggers don't care about their children privacy, they care only about themselves. They write about how their children affect their lives, but do they ever think about how sharing personal info about their children affect their childrens' lives?

It's always about "how this affects me". Whether meant to be funny or serious, it still boils down to the mother's point of view, with little regard for her children's feelings.

I always wonder how mommy bloggers would feel if their children wrote blogs about their mother. Would they consider that an invasion of privacy?

The old interview with the oldest Mann girl when she was 18 was really interesting. She seems to appreciate the artistic nature of her mother's work and respects her mother, yet admits the whole thing had been troubling for her and her siblings. They gradually became aware of the controversy and it was uncomfortable. She had a drinking problem at age 13!

Incidentally she also talks about how her mother had trouble showing affection and instead was always behind her camera using them as her muse. Dorothea Lange's children say similar things about their mother. Cold in person, yet able to convey such depth of love in an image.

I think that's Kate to a T. Can't show affection through normal means, does so via the cameras.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

Admin (#16), TFW doesn't even show her affection through the cameras. Those are TLC's cameras
and editors and story people, conjuring up the scenarios. Even that producer title doesn't give her the power to truly shape the show. There are so many hands in it, and what will get the highest ratings and the most profit is everyone's top priority. Surely the G children's safety and comfort is pretty far down on the list of things they worry about, or the show would've ended years ago.

Formerly Duped said...

On the other hand, I saw a TV movie called Snap Decision or something about a true case of a mother and her photographer friend taking candid photos of her kids in various states of undress. The film in for developing was confiscated by authorities and I believe the kids were taken away for a while and the mother and friend charged.

I see the beauty in Mann's photos but again, they are exploitative and a child's body should be private.

Another great comment from the article linked in this post"

It's the perfect symbiotic relationship of exhibitionist writers who use their children as material, and voyeuristic (or worse) readers who get to gaze on at the intimate scenes of domestic life of others in total comfortable anonymity.

It makes me wonder if any of the sheep who cajole, beg and plead with Kate to share more and post more and Tweet more and film more would do so if they could no longer do so on the condition of anonymity.
The fans have no skin in the game-nothing to lose. It's not their privacy being sacrificed. It's not them nor their children who are being publicly exposed, for better or worse. There is no quid pro quo for every piece of Gosselin child's privacy lost.

I think I'm still struggling to grasp the appeal of the Mommy bloggers.

In real life, I've observed most people to offer a polite smile and nod when someone is going on and on about their kids. I have never observed people to have much interest in children either not their own or they don't in some way have a reason to have an interest in, like family, close friends, mentors. It seems to me this is normal human behavior. You can't possibly be emotionally invested in every single child who crosses your path, we'd be on emotional overload. To this day it actually surprises me the success of some of these Mommy bloggers with their boring stories about average kids.

I don't know if there are mega mommy blogs out there like there used to be, but some bloggers would get hundreds, even thousands of responses at times.
I think for the millenial mommy community, it became like cult worship to be a "fan girl" and follower of women like "Dooce".

I think a lot of the time what people enjoy about mommy bloggers is the opportunity to feel superior. Parenting has become almost a competition sport. You can read a mommy blogger and say *I* would never act like that or *my* children would behave better. And you maybe get to say that in the comments. But then there are the ones who get really attached to the family of the blogger. It fulfills some need and they feel part of the family. When you know so much intimate stuff about the family, you must be a family member. It's an odd phenomenon that exploded with the internet.

Years ago in the Reading Eagle, before all the mommy bloggers, there was a local woman who wrote a similar column for the paper. She had 3 daughters close in age and she was a good writer. I enjoyed her column. I didn't really think about these issues. But she ended the column. She wrote that her girls were getting older (upper elementary?) and it was easier to figure out who they were so she needed to stop writing the column.

Well, then, you're really in a pickle.

Church Women are losing it. They are so over-the-top right now that it's not anywhere near believable. Todd (the gay son-in-law) was "kilt" by the prowler who used a bow and arrow on someone.

Barbie is GREEVEN. Meanwhile, the wedding between Patty's son and Dawn didn't take place because he's still gay and the gay friend interrupted the wedding.

Sure he did.

Yes, it certainly is symbiotic, not unlike cleaning symbiosis in the marine environment, where the cleaner removes and eats the parasites of another. Both benefit in the process.

Jeanne (#22), that was a great comment, and it got me thinking about these relationships. I think some of those mommy blogs provide a sense of "instant friendship" for a reader. She feels like she knows the mommy blogger, and if she comments and get a response, perhaps she feels that the blogger knows her, too. It is a quick friendship fix, which may even feel like intimacy (see Gladys). But it doesn't require the usual work that a real friendship takes. You'll never be asked to drive the mommy blogger to the airport, or help her move, or go to her dad's funeral, or listen to long stories about her boyfriend's cheating, or offer encouragement during her long job search. Nor will she do these things for you.

Real friendship has ups and downs -- wonderful times and sometimes difficult times. And lots of moms in 2016 struggle to find time for themselves while juggling marriage, motherhood, and work. Some are also dealing with aging parents and their challenges. So maybe these cyber connections fulfill that need.

We all know what a horrible pet owner she is. How she had one dog in the house and loving on it, while the other dog was outside seeing it.

Cruel.

The new puppies accomplish 2 things. An new episode and another 40K check and a bribe to keep some of the kids from going to their dad's because they have cutey-pie pumpkin pie puppies to play with.

Their dad may not have a cute dog to play with, so, there you go. She always has to constantly one up Jon.

These mommy bloggers get a neglected need fulfilled from blogging about their lives and their children because they are not in control of what is going on in their lives and they get that from the blogging.

But on another note, to have to respond to hundreds or even a couple of thousand posts and or emails, is just taking away precious time away from your babies and children and you cannot get that back, no matter how much you beg for to get it back.

I would exclude Gladys from those sheeple. She doesn't give a hoot if those kids are filmed, and doesn't care about watching them. Her focus, and her only focus is on Kate. The kids are just along for the ride. It really makes one wonder about what goes on in the head of someone who is obsessed with a stranger and lusts for her, but doesn't know her and clearly has no desire, by her own admission, to meet her. Bizarre.

State police announced the charges on Wednesday. They stem from an incident July 8 in Canoe Township, Indiana County.

That's when police stopped the buggy-surfing men.

Police said all five had been drinking and had alcoholic beverages with them.

In Pennsylvania, it's illegal to drive if one's blood-alcohol content is .08 percent or greater. For underage drinkers, the threshold is .02 percent.

Online court records don't list attorneys for the suspects."

It's odd that, after the December-January shows, they started filming right away, while the kids were still in school. And yet, when it came time to air those episodes--they ones they were in such a hurry to film--nothing happened. It's been 4 months since they were supposed to air the 10-year thing. And still no air date in sight. People spotted her and kids in Chicago, but there was never any mention of a camera crew.

There's a story there, no question about it.

Yes. There's some kind of programming mishap or re-organization that for some reason is affecting her show the most. It must kill her to not really be in the loop about what is going on. Clearly she isn't.

Layla (#59), and the less TFW knows about the schedule, the more I believe her producer credit is mostly a vanity title -- something her agent negotiated to make her seem like an industry professional. Being a real producer is a lot of hard work, and there's very little evidence of that sort of dedication in TFW's decade in the spotlight.

I really think the lack of airing dates for K+8 has to do with the loss of The Little Couple. K+8 needs a strong lead-in, and maybe Little Couple was set to be that lead-in. And then the network lost the show. Apparently they are fighting to get it back, but what if they aren't successful? Or if they are eventually successful, how long will it take to go through the legal process?

I just read up briefly on the lawsuit going on between LMNO and Discovery. Apparently, 6 shows are involved, including The Little Couple.
Kate + 8 isn't names as part of this legal morass, but something is weird.

Sad but true said...

In talking about Kate Plus 8, I think sometimes we conflate TLC and Figure 8 Productions. I don't think the credits running on her shows are titles designated by TLC, I think they refer mostly to production. And I think anyone in the industry would recognize Kate's name in the credits for what it is, a sop to her vanity. The programs Figure 8 produces are primarily sold to TLC (lots of old Duggar "series," though not Counting On), but they still seem to be a separate company.

I think it would be a hoot for TLC to just air K+8 without a lead-in. Can you imagine what the ratings would be?
--------------------------
I wonder if TLC is going to combine Kate+8 with Outdaughtered. I saw where the Outdaughtered family said their show was coming back in November (sweeps month, so you know who the TLC priorities are). Maybe they have enough K+8 episodes to go two months and Outdaughtered will be used as a lead in to Kate during the second half of her season in an attempt to boost her ratings.

I think that time has passed? I think the Kate "hate" has turned to apathy.
Kate's audience numbers peaked years ago and I don't imagine, other than outside the U.S., that she has much of an untapped pool of potential followers.
The show is on the downslope of it's popularity, and to be fair, it's had more staying power than most.
I'm sure Kate would film until the show is on life support with a huge DNR sign hung around its neck. I'm not so sure the Powers That Be see it the same way.
Sentimentalism doesn't drive the bottom line.

I agree with you, but then it doesn't make sense why TLC keeps filming them. Why spend time and money filming them if they know they won't have a large audience?

Maybe they plan to show the episodes a full year later after they were filmed? So the kids back to school episode won't seem ridiculous being shown in summer? Or Xmas 2016 shown xmas 2017 so that it's at least shown during the holidays? Hmmm. No idea.

Kate's numbers, while not what they used to be, have held steady at around 1M. That's good when you know there's little risk.
Also, maybe TLC wants to keep options open for filming "specials" well into the future.

I appreciated Jim Gaffigan putting family first. It's clear the amount of time and effort it takes to be involved at that level in the entertainment industry simply is not conducive to being there for your children in any serious manner. That case is endlessly fascinating to people around here. There are plenty of armchair detectives around, including me.

Jeez, wasn't that the headline 2 years ago? The twins fractured relationship with their father? There's something really wrong with making this tabloid fodder.
Could be, no, rather, probably is that Kate is controlling the narrative about what's really going on with Colin (and other kids) to thwart criticism about why she's still, AFTER 10 YEARS, shoving her kids into the public eye.
I really do wonder what a child psychologist would say about how this has been playing out in public for so many years.

I represent lots of autistic kids or other special needs and NO it's not typical at all!!! The vast majority of services are designed to wrap around the child in the child's HOME environment and support the parents in caring for the child. When a child is out of the home it either means the parent is unable to care for them due to either abuse or their own limitations, or the child's issues are so severe they pose a risk to the own child if they are not removed from the home.

I'm not getting the sense it's either of those, just based on the footage of Collin. The way he behaves doesn't even begin to touch some of the more severe cases of children with special needs. Color me shocked his issues warrant removal.

If this is Kate's own laziness, I swear.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

Admin (#114), I'm just remembering when the kids were walking somewhere, and one of them got hurt, and TFW quickly summoned Jon to handle it and didn't even break stride. The idea that she could summon the patience, understanding and compassion to handle a child with special needs on her own -- or that she would even have the desire to try -- is practically unfathomable.

Nicky said...

Yes! Admin! I agree 100%! (I was just commenting to say the same thing - but it ate my comment).

I know kids around me that have severe issues, and they have not been sent away.

It's deplorable that the amount of desperation for her to stay relevant is growing. I hate the fact we know this about her kid, and it's being used for press and to sell magazines.

And bringing in 2 new puppies to the family is fine, but not helping your son through his issues is too hard?? I can't even....the anger I feel towards her has no words.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Does it occur to Kate that if a child's special needs are so severe he needs home removal, that maybe the stress and chaos of filming isn't the best idea right now?

In just the blurb they have on the web site she's made it all about her, how she has had to deal with him ALL ALONE, how this has impacted the whole family so much. She makes it sound like he is al just one big inconvenience to her.

So now that it's clear he has special needs he is in no way in a position to determine he is not going to see his father. She needs to bring him to the visits, period. She doesn't have to do it alone, she chose to do so alone. And not only Jon, but if she kept parents, grandparents, friends and other extended family in her life, she would in no way be facing this "alone." She MADE herself alone, then wants to whine about it.

Formerly Duped said...

There is a possibility Colin is just refusing to participate. I would not put it past Kate to make up some sad story about having to send him away just to cover up the fact that he's refusing to be filmed or photographed. She would.

Those kinds of home-away programs really are for very serious, serious issues and usually involve parents incapable of caring for the child in the home. Collin presents as quiet and a little mopey but in no way do I recognize any kind of issues that would warrant an in patient PROGRAM. He's perfectly capable of expressing himself, behaving socially appropriately, following rules. That's all on recent film.

It saddens me he could be in a program with children whose issues and backgrounds bear no resemblance to his own. Social workers are always going to heavily explore in home services first. We know better now and sending children away is usually a method of last resort. I wonder if this is less a "program" and more "Jamie's house" or something like that.

I have to agree with Admin. Collin did not seem such a severe case in the footage(granted, last footage I saw was that their 10th birhday). It really feels like Kate dumped Collin as soon as it became obvious he is going to need extra help.
As for Kate not wanting to break apart the 6 pack: Am I the only one who remembers how Kate talked about Aaden's glasses? She said she was said not all of them were perfect. Because the kid had glasses, he wasn't perfect. Personally I am not surprised she shipped Collin off, she probably sees him as defective.

Because she needs a new storyline, a new hook. She's desperate, as Nicky said. I don't think she wanted to talk about this if she could help it, but she scraped the bottom of the barrel and there it was. Desperate times. Now people might be knocking at TLC's door wanting them to air these episodes already. Is a "very special episode" in the works where Colin is sent away? I can see it now, Kate on the coach dabbing at the invisible tears from her eyelids.

I have noticed Collin's struggles socially, but I've also noticed him to be extremely high functioning. He participates just fine in the family activities, has good eye contact, behaves himself, understands what's happening. This is NOTHING like some of the autistic kids I've worked with. He's capable of complex ideas and expressing himself. Is emotional and loves his mother. Although he doesn't make a lot of comments to the cameras when he does they're completely age appropriate. I'm not buying she has some kind of severe special needs child she can't take care of. Get real. She doesn't WANT to care for him, it's not that she can't. She doesn't know the half of having a really challenging child.

If it is something on the spectrum, it makes some of his interactions with Kate all the more heartbreaking. I'm thinking of his confusion over the hose when she told him not to ride over it, and her shutting the door in his face when he was asking for clarification.

I wonder if Kate really understands the issues some children in such programs often face. I've seen fire starters, kids who are violent toward other children, kids who molest other children, suicidal and homicidal kids, kids even young kids on drugs. Self-harming kids. Kids whose parents are drug addicts and child molesters. Kids who have no place to go. While I feel very badly for those children, a higher functioning child who does not have that kind of complicated background might not do well spending great amounts of time with them. Higher functioning children usually find such group homes incredibly distressing, what am I doing HERE type feelings.

Collin just isn't in that category, not anything we've ever seen. I wonder how much harm is being done separating him from the family versus treatment this could offer. If you're going to spend this kind of money might as well have in home treatment. As long as he's not a danger to others in the home, keep him in the home for god sake. It's not the 19th century anymore and we don't "send kids away" absent very severe problems. Her kids have a tendency to ostracize others and the longer he spends time away from home, the closer they tend to bond to each other at the exclusion of him.

Come to think of it, didn't a poster here predict that TFW wouldn't be above using C's issues as a story line? Unconscionable. How soon before Gladys tweets some phony concern over C, but mostly praising TFW for what SHE is doing to get him help?

I'm thinking about that poor sweet boy choosing z special, poignant birthday gift for his mom that represented the 2 of them, and her making
fun of it. Even when she had the opportunity to walk her comments back during the couch interview, she repeated her criticism. We saw the writing on the wall when he accidentally whacked his head on the plane in his exuberance to leave, and TFW coolly commented, "Sometimes God builds in punishments." She's about as compassionate as a grilled cheese sandwich.

Sad but true said...

The thing is, Kate knew, as far back as when this child was FIVE, that he may have issues of some sort. Did it really take until he was TEN to figure out what was wrong? Or did she just deny that anything was wrong in order to keep up the facade she needed for her "career"? The subtext in this story is so disturbing, if TLC hasn't already had second thoughts about putting her back on TV, I hope they're having them now.

You know, it occurs to me, I'm not sure Collin's high functioning needs even qualify him for an in patient program. We don't have too many group homes out there for high functioning special ed kids. Most of America assumes parents will care for those children in their HOME.

A high level group home wouldn't even let him in, too dangerous. You'd have to find a very low-level group home, if one even exists in the area, and in that home, you would find mostly foster children who may have little or nothing wrong with them but are awaiting foster home placement. Insurance would be a nightmare to get it covered, and he might not even qualify if it's determined he can be serviced in the home.

I'm not sure I'm buying what Kate is selling. I think he very likely could just be living with a friend. How incredible to lie about this, if she is lying.

Her kids have a tendency to ostracize others and the longer he spends time away from home, the closer they tend to bond to each other at the exclusion of him.

Saddly I think that process began a long time ago with Collin. I remember him playing by himself on the beach, his two brothers sitting close to each other on the couch, Collin at a distance from them...
It breaks my heart to think that Kate has taught the kids, by example, to ignore Collin rather than be supportive.
I still cannot believe that even being in the spotilight, no one could ever intervine to help these children. It's frightening. She got away with neglecting and mistreating her kids in broad daylight, on national television and no one could do a thing.

HOLY SHIT I can't believe her. First of all, what happened to "homeschooling"? Second of all, this is nobody's business. Why do I picture an alternative/behavioral/psych program ? He's not intellectually impaired. If it's severe enough to need residential treatment...oh I just can't...

And they have a cover shoot without him it it. This was the all day photo shoot! What a witch!

My ex does this with our daughter. Goes on vacation with his new family, doesn't include her, takes Christmas card photos without her.

I wonder if this is why the episodes keep getting delayed.

This makes me SO angry. Collin needed additional help a LONG time ago, and all they did instead was film, film, film. Beating the crap out of him probably didn't help, either. Now Greatest Mom of All Time can't handle it and she's sending him away. Thank goodness it's not the 1940's or she'd be trying to do what Joe Kennedy did to Rosemary. Now she's putting it out there for the world. She truly SUCKS as a mom.

Yes, Collin has been missing or late in the last episodes seen, at certain times. Maybe if he's not in a school with therapeutic programming, he is in a military or boarding school anyone can attend if their tuition is paid. While I also noticed Collin's early needs for order, patterns etc, he talks well, interacts with the others, seems artistic and bright, helpful yet very sad or lethargic. Behavior issues or resistance to Kate have been mentioned before. I think Kate just can't handle him or doesn't want to try. Heaven forbid she let Jon have full custody. She'd rather send him away.

((

YEP. I have a friend who has a teen who got so depressed they took her to a crisis center. The teen didn't have an active plan for suicide and the counselor recommended against hospitalization at that point for that very reason. This was a good, wholesome teen who would be in there with kids who have very big behavioral issues.

Once again Kate shoves her son even further under the bus. What kind of mother shares such private information about her son just so she can stay relevant. That is all this is about. Kate was falling hard out of peoples minds and this was a for sure way to bring it right back on her - with her fans cheering her on. Truly shows just how warped all those fans are. Colin, I fear, is going to implode at some point all because of his mothers behavior toward him. Remember the episode where Colin clearly said 'I wish I could hug her, but I'm not allowed to'? That screamed abuse. I was glad to hear Children's Services was called out, which means that is pretty much an ongoing thing in that house. There's really no telling how many times they have been called out and of course, she has someone in her corner to bail her out. It is sick beyond words.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

Sad but true (#140), TFW's comment reminds me of her meltdown on the plane to a luxury vacation when she found out there was a delay. Freaked the eff out, with 8 small children in her care.

And that reaction was yet another clue about how little hands-on parenting she was actually doing. Remember how shocked she was about A's diaper blow-out? A mother who has taken care of 8 babies and toddlers would surely have lived through every type of gross mess imaginable. But if your kids are being raised by their dad, other relatives, neighbors, helpers, and "crew daddies," I guess
you don't have to do much dirty work.

I'm livid about this story. I'd love to hear from some readers who haven't posted in a while, and might have some thoughts and opinions to share.
And of course any newcomers who might want to check in.

Does anyone else remember when TFW took C to the eye doctor when he was a toddler, concerned about a floppy lid? She poked at it as if it was some horrible deformity that needed to be corrected.
As bad as I thought she was, I am floored about her exploiting this poor child's difficulties for personal gain. But wait for it...she'll find some way to make it as if it's a personal quest to help other struggling parents. Like she gives half a crap about any other family.

Here is what Mady and Cara said about seeing their father - taken from the Dailymail article

Kate also told People that two of her children, twins Mady and Cara no longer see their father.

Mady told the publication, 'So much is going on in my life... the last thing I have time for is a toxic relationship.'

She added: 'He should maybe spend some time thinking about why we don't want to see him... he doesn't even know us.'

Cara only said: 'I wouldn't even know what to say about him.

Kate also said that the children were in therapy about Colin's absence.

The person who really needs to be in therapy is Kate herself. If she was any kind of mother she would be encouraging the kids to have a relationship with their father.

The situation with Colin is just sad. I remember an episode where the boys were on the couch talking and he was so articulate and happy. . . and then something happened. I really hope that Jon gets involved.

Khate has sunk to an all time low with this People article.

Nicky said...

Here's the thing - when children have behaviour problems, it is not only the child's responsibility to fix it. This is a family problem, which needs a family solution.

I have posted here before (I was originally Alberta Girl, but noticed someone else previous had a user name as Alberta Mom). I've mentioned my son's behaviour issues before. He has general anxiety, which causes him to lash out, and become frustrated in a lot of situations (mainly school situations).

We have worked very hard with both a psychologist and a psychiatrist for the past 4 years. He is now 10, and the progress has been amazing. Is his behaviour perfect? No, but his ability to problem solve, and control his reactions is night and day. The last 2 years he has been on medication, but we are now in the process of taking him off. And yes Milo - when we realized we needed help for our son, we reached out to get it for him. But he is OUR child, so it is OUR problem, not only HIS.

This was a FAMILY process for us, with both my husband and I taking numerous classes to help our son through his behaviour issues. Because at the end of the day, it is how we as parents react and deal with situations, that either affects how he behaves, or how he calms himself down.

What angers me about this whole Gosselin situation, is both parents have fucked up royally, and no one is taking accountability or responsibility for their son. Sending the problem away does not solve the problem, Kate. This is NOT the same as sending your kids away for college - I'm going to assume this is going to be your standard line in all the "follow up" interviews you are going to do. He is 12 - give your goddamn head a shake!

And Jon - get off your ass, and actually be a father who is involved with ALL your kids. They are children and do not have the experience and knowledge to know that they need to see both parents. Be an adult!

This whole thing is a disaster, and unfortunately, I think this is Kate's way of pushing TLC's hand to air their episodes.

The latest news breaks my heart. I can't get over how brutal she was to Collin when he presented her with her birthday present in Mexico and she not only dismissed it but went on to make fun of it. What kind of a mother does that?

These children mean nothing to her - nothing. She only sees the 'opportunities' which will await her by continuing to exploit them (and their personal problems) in her celebrity life. She will of course continue to complain about all SHE has to put up with as she struggles alone, ignoring the fact that years ago Jon recognized the problems the children were having while she assured the public all was well.

I just don't have the words to explain how badly I feel for Collin that his problems were ignored for so long but the filming continued anyway. How lost he must feel being separated from his brother buddies.

"He doesn't even know us," Mady adds. "How can he dare to talk about us?"

Once again, the "story" is light on any verifiable facts. It's always what Kate says happened, which we all know often bears little resemblance to truth.

Well congratulations Kate. Parental alienation of your twins worked. "Toxic relationship" is something an adult told them. ie Kate. WIth that said, I'm sorry but I can no longer find excuses for Jon, in light of these latest interviews. I didn't feel this way before byt now I think even if what it took was bringing the cops to enforce the order, he should have taken all his children. Bringing the cops would have cost him nothing so this isn't about not having resources to fight Kate in court. He gave up too easily.

ALL the G kids are going to need special help. The twins seem to feel loathing and disrespect for Jon.Alexis is also kept away from him. She is alienated by her sisters. All so sad.

MikeB said...

Wow! Just when I thought Kate couldn't be any worse of a parent she goes and surprises me with the People article. Those kids are mentally damaged and it is obvious the twins have no idea they are the problem. Kate has them brainwashed into thinking staying on TV is the only way they will survive. They are parroting what Kate has told them and are showing absolutely no independence at all. The twins are developmentally stunted with a maturity level of 10 or less.

Only poor Colin seems like he has any backbone and now he is paying the price. He was always an introvert and Kate hurt him greatly by forcing him to perform like a trained monkey on TV. Rather than nurturing his individuality she kept them as a homogenous group with only a group identity. When Colin withdrew Kate punished him. Now she has him banished from the family. That poor boy is going to be very lucky if he can get the help he needs to get through the PTSD Kate has created and become a functioning member of society.

Sorry for the rant, but whoever thought the People interview was a good idea needs to be fired. This isn't a movie with actors who can magically cure all their woes by the end of the show. We are witnessing irrefutable mental abuse of those children for no other reason than profit to Kate.

I'm literally sick to my stomach that a mother would do this to her child. a) Tell the world Collin's problems b) Allow Mady to talk about her relationship with her father.

I don't know how severe Collin's issues are, so I won't judge that she sent him away. There could be safety issues that aren't necessarily violent but would warrant him to be away from his siblings. However, that is none of our business and it should never be splashed all over People magazine.

This may well backfire on TFW because it could (and probably will) be said that many of the problems stem from the show. Collin's issues may be why TLC has not yet given her an air date. Anyone can look back at the previous episodes and see that he's been zoned out for quite a while and yet she continued to let him be filmed. As for Mady's attitude? She is parroting her mother. Jon can't comment on them because he can't bribe them the way TFW can. Mady seems to be in it for what she can get.

I'm not sure that Collin was recently sent away. I remember watching a vacation episode where the kids were ziplining and Collin and another of the boys were talking about how nice it was to spend time together. To me it sounded like they'd been away from each other, not just playing with someone else. It really stuck in my mind. Such an odd conversation to have unless someone had been gone.

Although I don't speculate very often, it's possible that the holdup on showing more K+8 episodes is because C is missing in so many and TLC isn't sure how to handle that. Perhaps that's the reason for the announcement in People....to let fans know why C is missing so much. Laying the groundwork in other words.

NJGal51 said...

This is just pure speculation on my part but it could be that Collin has been banished to military type school to learn to toe the line. She sent Shoka and Nala away so why not send Collin away also.

I suspect the People article was closely coordinated with TLC. To what end, though? Are they expecting a round of tab shows? If she's coming back in October, those would seem premature. I don't get the timing here, seems like it should have been closer to her "premiere" date. Are they testing the waters to see if people accept this bullshit story about Collin and keep watching even though it's no longer 8?

Maybe, after this, none of the recent filming will air at all. Or it will be relegated to TLCgo or Youtube. That would be karma at its finest.

To me it sounded like they'd been away from each other, not just playing with someone else. It really stuck in my mind. Such an odd conversation to have unless someone had been gone.

Yes; there was that, and him coming to the birthday party late (people speculated he was working at that farm). It was obvious to me he was away, which means she lied recently about him being homeschooled.

Also, if they are getting therapy for his being away, I hope the therapist recognizes parental alienation that is going on and tries to mend the relationship. My ex's family treats my dd like a second class citizen. She gets mad and starts ignoring him but deep down all she wants is for him to have her in his life. Are the twins so cold that they don't have that need deep down? How can they just say they don't need a relationship with him without mourning the relationship they had? Pretty cold

Just from writing these handful of sentences, and not knowing you since you're not on tv in people's homes for the past 10 years, I can tell you have summoned all of your resources to help your child.
Bless you and your family for taking on what life have given you and refusing to give up (or hand over).

This is just pure speculation on my part but it could be that Collin has been banished to military type school to learn to toe the line. She sent Shoka and Nala away so why not send Collin away also.

Could be: http://www.vfmac.edu/

Well I guess this is the sequel to the Today show debacle? Mady didn't clam up and forget her lines this time? No stage fright? Bravo Mommy Dearest, bravo! Your trained monkey must make you proud.
