Recap: Kate Plus 8 ''Blind Date": Realitytvkids.com dating tips and more!

Coming up on The Bachelorette! Er, I mean Kate Plus 8.

Hanger on Deanna is playing the role of the well-meaning but completely misguided friend who wants to set you up, which is just a front for the producers going through a couple hundred head shots and picking this guy out. His first meeting with Kate is awkward, explains Kate. Made more awkward still by Deanna being right there in the middle introducing them like it's 6th grade. Deanna tells hot-stuff that Kate has eight kids. I kind of feel like that's something you should mention to the guy before you set him up with her. It's not an insignificant detail that you can get into later, like you prefer Netflix and chill on the weekends, or you can drive stick shift. And can't you just meet outside Starbucks with instructions that say hey I'm the guy in the green hat and you're the girl with the polka dot skirt, like normal blind dates?

Mr. Swipe Right is cute if I may say so! He unbuttons not one but two of his shirt buttons. He waxes his chest. He drinks out of little tiny tea cups.

Kate claims she has gone on a handful of dates since the divorce. Heh, no she hasn't. Kate is quite vague about how Deanna knows Vann, because she knows him mostly from his head shot, but his resume sounds good. He went to Annapolis (good heavens!). I think it's absolutely f--ing hilarious that as Kate is explaining all this, they show a photo of her with her BFF Jamie. As we know, the running joke, or maybe even truth, is that Kate's relationship with Jamie might not always have been platonic. They have admitted they've slept in the same bed, and there are a number of bootleg photos circling out there for years showing them acting very huggy-kissy. That is truly brilliant editing and has to be intentional. It just has to be. We get the joke, Vann's really just auditioning as Kate's beard. Buh-bum--ching!

More and more Kate has been appearing on camera without a stitch of make-up on, which is not what I would expect from someone like her. Deanna's coming down from New York and will do Kate's hair and make-up and take her up to New York for the date. Who's going to watch the kids? And don't they know the cardinal rule of first dates, the guy should come to her?

They're doing a wha-what???? A helicopter ride? Well, what the heck, on my last date I only got some Thai food and a game of corn hole.

I don't trust a damn thing Kate says about what the kids have said about this date so I'm just going to ignore her recap of what she claims they said and cut straight to the kids. They're old enough to speak for themselves. Mady says with quite a bit of sass it's good for Kate to date and find a husband so she won't die alone. Heh, well that's one reason to find companionship. Meanwhile the younger kids think she's far too old to date. I love how when you're a kid 40 feels like 80, and 20 is at best, 40. Conversely, the older you get the younger people look, right? I can still remember being a freshman in college and how old and important I felt, but look at freshmen now and they are absolute babies. Goo-goo-gaa-gaa babies! Perception is so interesting. All in all none of these kids seem to mind her going on a date. Most of them are at best indifferent, and those who do care actually seem pretty selfless about this, just wanting Kate to find somebody. They see their father dating and happy, surely they have learned by now watching a parent move on and date is not that big of a deal. Anyway, I enjoy how all this flies right in the face of the sheeple, who have claimed all along Kate doesn't date for the good of her children. No, Kate doesn't date because she can't get a date, doesn't know how to get a date, is a child exploiter, opportunist and narcissist that would not make a wise partner for most men so most men avoid her, kids or no kids.

There is a very, very long segment about some of the kids helping her pick out clothes. It goes on forever.

Isn't Deanna a 40-year-old single woman? What does she know about what one should wear on their first, second or third dates? The second date should be business-like? Wtf? Deanna, that's how you find yourself 40 and single. No one wants to feel like they're meeting up with you to sign a contract, second date or not. Dating tip: Don't trust dating advice from hopelessly single friends.

At the end of this painfully long segment Kate chooses a boring but sensible little black dress.

Deanna provides a very vague story about how she's known Vann for many months (ever since she first saw his headshot), he's handsome and hard working, and would make a good match for Kate. I guess if you're looking for opposites attract you're right on the money.

Kate says one thing that I think is very true, in that having kids makes getting a date harder.  Jon has not had a problem finding dates, but Jon is not nearly as socially awkward, uptight and negative. He sends out good, friendly vibes, and he gets girlfriends, and they seem to accept his children without question. Jon could have six toes on each foot, scales for skin, and a big hairy mole on the tip of his nose, and he'd still always have a girlfriend. For some people dating, and life, comes easier.

I couldn't agree with Kate more, before she should even waste her time, or for that matter his, I think it's very important to let your date know you have eight kids. For some strange reason Deanna feels it's best to hide this fact. That's just plain silly, and can I say rude? If I know I don't want to take on a partner with eight kids no matter how nice they are, I'd appreciate you not waste my time by withholding this information. Putting myself in Vann's shoes, all kinds of thoughts would be running through my head if that information were kept from me for too long. Before they're even out of the gate bad-advice-Deanna is helping Kate to create some major red flags for her date. Good job.

As Deanna does Kate's make-up, Deanna and Kate have a long and conceited conversation about how there's no way on this planet Vann cannot recognize Kate, I mean this is Kate we're talking about here, although Deanna hasn't gotten into who she is with Vann yet. For goodness sake, she's Kate Gosselin, not Gandhi. What Deanna did say is that she told him she's a hot blonde. Kate instructs her to keep applying make-up. Heh, good one, Kate!

Kate seems to be of the mindset that a parent must be 100% focused on their kids and someday when they are grown they can think about themselves again. There are quite a few parents who would disagree with that helicopter-parenting philosophy. This also is Kate's not-so-subtle way to get in a dig at Jon, who has nurtured romantic relationships and friendships alike all along, in addition to being a good father to his children. Not only is it not healthy for you for the rest of your life to come to a screeching halt when you are a parent, but it's not good for your children. Watching a parent in healthy relationships with other people male and female is how children learn to model healthy relationships of their own. It also sends an important message to children that the world doesn't revolve around them. I've known a lot of kids whose parents don't do absolutely anything but be parents, and the kids often end up spoiled. Eventually this approach leaves parents with a crippling sense of emptiness as children grow up and develop other interests outside their parents, which happens sooner rather than latter.

Plus, Kate's kids are way too old to need her attention at all hours of the day. She should be able to find plenty of time while they are at school or with friends to look after herself and develop some interests of her own and welcome other people into her life. Moreover, she has shown time and time again she is very much about herself as much as she is about her kids, and she has spent untoward amounts of time away from them over the years, so she can stop with the martyrdom. Let's be honest, she uses her kids to cover for her inability to get a date, that's the plain truth of it. They're a convenient excuse for her as they often are.

Commercials. We're back, and Kate says goodbye to the kids. I don't see anyone around who looks like a nanny. Her limo pulls up. Seriously, a limo? Could this be any more 1-percenter? I really struggle to grasp how most of her fans relate to this. Also, isn't she at all worried about the first impression that's going to leave on her date? I.e., snob? She lives how she thinks rich people live, but most rich people do not go around taking limos everywhere much less on just a date. At most, they might valet their own car once they get to the venue, but a limo is ridiculous and even the rich know it.

The producer asks the boys how it feels to watch their mom leave for a date. I find that question extremely prying and more appropriate for a therapist to ask, but nonetheless the boys seem genuinely indifferent, they're just like the little birdie finally flew the nest. Ha, the 24/7 D.C. eagle cam is 100 times more interesting than this family, sorry boys.

Mady doesn't understand why Kate is so nervous about dating. She says something about how if you want to be nervous over this, meaning herself, that's on you. I don't know whether to find that comment funny or self-absorbed.

Kate and Deanna have a boring conversation about how Kate's nervous and is hot. Deanna asks about her dating days before marriage. Ohhhh, now we're getting into something interesting. Of course Kate won't even give up any interesting information that's already out there anyway. I'm thinking of that story about her old high school boyfriend and how she was living with him. There was a tabloid interview with him years ago, as I recall. Kate claims her high school class was so tiny there wasn't much dating and her guy friends were more like brothers. Heh, that never stopped anyone before, have you read/been traumatized by Flower in the Attic?!

You know what's head-scratching? There's a way for her to tell the story of her past in a way that is respectful to the men she's been with while still deliciously interesting. I mean it was 20 years ago, it's not like she's dishing on yesterday's boyfriend. Instead she makes this conversation about as boring as a ham sandwich, claiming she never ever would dream of dating. But the truth is so much more engaging and would make for a much more interesting episode. She just doesn't get it.

Last time Kate dated there were pagers. Heh, yep, and cell phones that made your arm ache if you talked too long. Everyone complains about dating these days but dating was rough back then too.

Oh, finally they show their clearly full-time nanny Andrea, who can smile. I knew she had it in her. Took Kate going out of state to bring that out of her. Glad there is adult supervision here. They're making pizzas, and it's boring. Ha, Joel outs Kate by saying it's Kate's first date. I thought Kate just said she's had a handful of dates. No she hasn't, and her kids say so. I love that the kids are finally old enough to tell us what's really going on here. Her gaslighting days are over.

Mady explains that a first date is really just about assessing whether the guy is a serial killer. Holy smokes, Mady is spot on there. Yes, first things first.

Dating tip: Just pay the $29.99 and do the background check. Here, I'll pay it for you for gosh sakes.

More nosey questions from the producers, most of them I feel like they've already asked six different ways, but the sum of it all is that for the umpteenth time the kids are just fine with Kate dating if not even getting married. Why are so many of the kids concerned she'll progress too fast in this relationship before letting them meet the guy? Several say they really want to meet him and would be upset if they didn't. Exactly what I have been saying for years, many children want to meet and be involved in their parents' new relationships. They actually feel left out if you try to shelter them from it in some misguided attempt to protect them.

Andrea says it's a school night, which is just an interesting tidbit. Seems to me getting ready for school should be the priority, not filming. Stock "Italian" music as they eat the pizza. $1.99 on iTunes.

Deanna and Kate say they're excited to have an adult conversation for once, without talking about vocab words. Oh, Deanna, stop it. Geez, how do you think Andrea feels, she's the one actually taking care of these kids day-to-day.

I have never seen two friends have a more boring and pointless conversation about nothing. I hope I don't sound like this with my friends. Back at Quintland, they're running around outside with balls and a parachute and absolutely nothing happens. Much like the Roloffs these kids have a large property to enjoy, but there is a glaring difference between their episodes showing the property and the Roloffs. And that is at the Roloffs there were always three or four other kids there. Friends of the Roloff kids. There all.the.time. You literally can't go an episode without some friend of theirs popping up. Mueller and several others.

Deanna and Kate are still in their limo saying absolutely nothing worth recapping.

Commercials. Dating tip: It might be terribly awkward. But the last thing you do in a really awkward dating situation is say it's really awkward, Kate. Oy-veh!!!

The addition of a drone to this show has really improved the production values. They get some great shots of NYC. Lol, Kate doesn't want Deanna to leave right away after she introduces them. Oh for cripe sakes.

Vann's patiently waiting for Kate by the helicopter (for reals). What a weird meeting place, they're in a rather shady empty parking lot. He is tall, brunette, and has boyish, classic good looks. His suit coat is a little frumpy, but I find that endearing. Shows he's not vain.

Having been on my share of bad dates, I can tell within about five seconds Vann's not attracted to her. And that won't ever change. He's doing that awkward stare where the wheels are turning and the thought process is "well, she's pretty enough, but she's not really my kind of pretty I don't think, but let me give it a few more seconds.....nope, she's still not my type. Dang it, I have to sit through an entire date now with someone who could very well be quite nice but who is just not for me. Why do I keep doing this to myself? Damn me."

Deanna tells some not credible story about how she met Vann at a "charity" event. Which one? Name names. Was this "charity" a production meeting in Silver Spring where she and a couple producers looked through a couple hundred head shots?

The helicopter pilot looks like he'd be just as comfortable delivering pizzas down in Brooklyn. I love NYC.

This reminds me of the "rewards" Trump used to give on The Apprentice where you got to do something really lavish and once in a lifetime, like take a helicopter ride at sunset. Those were the good ole days when that show was truly the best reality show ever made.

He's from Hoboken??? Hoboken!!!!!! Hall-ahhh!!! Sorry, I have a lot of college friends from that great place.  If you can't live in NYC, please, set up shop in Hoboken.

Vann certainly knows his battleships. I do too, actually. I'll take E-6 please. Well, NYC is a thing of beauty. It really is the greatest city in the world, isn't it? The only thing profound Kate can come up with to sum up this incredible experience was, that was, like, fun.

Like, yeah.

I have to give Kate a little credit, she's trying on this date. She's asking him questions about himself, making eye contact, and trying to act interested. They head to dinner at an Italian restaurant. Gosh, Van's cute. Swipe right, swipe right, swipe right. I'm not sure why Kate thinks a parent can have nothing in common with someone who has no kids. Grr, I hate parents like that. Naturally she finds plenty of things in common with him. Duh.

Dating tip: Don't tell your date your brain is a "fruit salad."

Kate wants to know how it is Vann has ended up single without any kids at this age. Is it me or is that question really rude? Especially on a first date. Not everyone gets a girl knocked up at 18 and puts a ring on it. Some people postpone that aspect of their lives for very good reason. Career, travel, just not feeling ready for it all yet, haven't met the right girl yet. Although let's be real, some people postpone it because they want to live up being single and wealthy and party without any responsibility. Van looks like that type, and there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I'd rather you wait on having kids until you're really ready to be attentive to them, rather than settle down prematurely before you get all of that out of your system and see your marriage end in divorce by the time you're 40.

Dating tip: No overtly personal questions on your first date! Gah!

Vann is very polite about Kate's nosey question, making a joke about how his parents ask that a lot. His parents sound like they're worried he's gay, I'm totally getting that vibe. Not that there's anything wrong with that either. Vann says he's happy, he's comfortable, and he's holding out for the best. Heh, i.e. I want to live up being single and wealthy and party without any responsibility. Got it.

Kate goes into a long speech the crux of which is that you should not just marry the first person who comes along. She is clearly implying that's what she did. She acts like Jon coerced her into marriage. Wasn't it the opposite? Didn't she basically peg him as a dentist's son and promptly steal him out from under his girlfriend, no pun intended? That can hardly be characterized as happenstance, just putting a ring on the first thing that comes along with a pretty enough face and a vagina. Gimme a break. Her bar is set so much higher now, she explains. You know what, her kids are going to listen to this! She is such a f--ing bitch about their father whom they love, there's no other way to say it. It hasn't gotten any better in five years. She's a bit more subtle about it, but not really. She just doesn't name him by name now when she slams him, as if that makes it okay.

There's a gal in the background who looks like Jenna Bush and Julia Styles had a baby. That's so classic New York.

I see the kids have been brainwashed to regurgitate Kate's mantra that it would be tough for anyone to handle eight kids. I wonder how they think school teachers do it with 30 kids or more.

Baw, Van has never seen the show. Of course he hasn't. He's out being single and wealthy when this show airs.

This guy is a professional flirt but it could not be clearer he is not that into her, as much as he is being extremely nice and polite. It's tough for a woman to get through a date where she knows he's not into you, but it's even more embarrassing when she doesn't seem to realize it.

Commercials. Little people and their dogs!

Back at the date, they're diving into the tiramisu. I once met an Italian shopkeeper in Little Italy, Baltimore who insisted he invented tiramisu. He was kind of nutty but had a nice bakery.

How many ways can the producers ask the kids if they are okay with Kate dating??? Stop! They're asking this enough some of the kids are changing their answers. Having actually studied how to interview kids effectively, like really studied what psychologists and sociologists have to say about this, in order that I can do a better job at getting good information about crimes, or child abuse, from little ones who might be a witness or victim, one of the cardinal rules is you don't keep asking the child the same question over and over. You just don't. You ask it enough and they start thinking maybe you don't like their answer and maybe they should change it. By the time a child has been asked about an incident the third time or more, there is very little left they can say that is reliable. You have to basically throw out the interview at that point, it's of no value.

What do the twins dating have to do with anything? How boring.

Vann mumbles, I've noticed. Big time mumbles like as bad as Tyler Florence. That's one of those things where you tell your girlfriends the next day, well he was so cute and sweet, but he mumbles! If that is not already a Seinfeld episode, it should be.

Oh, no, not the pity walk. This is the point in the date where he is such a nice guy he is feeling guilty knowing he will never call you again. So he asks you if you'd like to take a little walk a couple blocks before you say goodnight.

Dating tip: When he wants to take a pity walk, trust me, it's a pity walk.

They take an admittedly cute selfie and send it to Deanna who promptly responds "CUTE!!!" Yes, it was cute.

Why isn't Kate just ending this date already? Painful. Kate says she can't do anything at the end of the date because her kids will be watching this. What was she going to do if cameras weren't there, have sex with him right outside the subway stop?

Dating tip: Don't put out on the first date!!

Kate ends the date by saying "you have my information." Lol, sounds like you're trying to get the Girl Scouts off your front porch, you know where I live hit me up next year. He leans in to go for a little kiss, and she turns away. She actually turns away! He lands on her cheek. I've heard of the Puritans but this is ridiculous. Why is she being so unnaturally prudish?

Vann gives a really polite interview basically saying Kate is really nice and he doesn't know how it would work with eight kids but you go where life takes you. God he's nice.

Kate was impressed he wasn't scared off by the eight kids thing. I'm not sure it's that so much as eight kids wasn't even really registering.

Kate says they're trying to arrange a time to meet up again, which is a nice guy's way of "ghosting" you without actually ghosting you. He will forever be trying to find a good time.

Dating tip: If he likes you, that time will be found. Usually within the next couple days.

Little people fire drills!!! And we're out.

Yes.

If only her name, Kate Gosselin is in the tweet, can she see it even if she has those tweeters blocked?
If TFW does a twitter search for her name, just like you or I do to read what's going on, she'd see every tweet with the name Kate Gosselin mentioned. If she looks only at her own profile page she won't see tweets from those she's blocked.

If the non-fans use the @ and she has them blocked, them what's the purpose of tweeting her?
IMO, they include @Kateplusmy8 so that everyone can see the tweets in one place and everyone can join in the convo and follow along. Many people search for Kate Gosselin or Kateplusmy8 and read all of the tweets that mention those names. It groups all of their tweets together - TFW's timeline. Instead of tweeting each other and their friends/non-friends having to go to each of the individual twitter user's pages to read conversations, they have it all in one place.

Kate on a date. Thanks for the recap. I remember some cringe worthy dates from my days gone by. Bad enough when you are one of the participants. I wouldn't want to watch someone else (especially Kate) do the grin-and-try-find-the-right-response disconnected first date.

I have a friend visiting who faithfully follows Sister Wives. So, we watched last night. Before, after and during the Kody plus 4 show, I did not see a single promo for a Kate show. There were several other promos. None for Kate.

I hadn't seen Sister Wives for a years. I felt as if I had not skipped a single episode. A wife is pregnant, a wife is upset and sorry, a wife is worried and some kids are running around. Meanwhile, Kody is still full of himself.

I hope everyone enjoys their Memorial Day. Thanks to all who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Now, on to read the recap. Thanks, Admin!

How the hell would you know? You continue to operate under the delusion that you actually know this woman.

I hope the kids know her! Joel stated this is the first time she's ever dated. He even double checked with his sister, is this the first time she's dated? His sister confirmed yes, absolutely. First time.

Kate lies. Her children tell the truth.

Great recap, admin. I did watch this On Deamnd and have totally forgotten most of the episode, so thanks! That was hilarious.

OT: I see I am Jazz will be back on for Season 2 despite actual death threats made against the 15 year old!

Thanks for the recap. Seems like ages ago that aired.

About her not dating...what about Jeff Millionaire? If the kids were saying that she does not date, then Jeff must have never set foot in the house. I always suspected their relationship was business, as in spark tabloid rumors and then pay him to be her beau on the show.

Oh well, Vann seemed like a nice guy who got his 5 seconds of fame and moved on. I agree there was no spark. His audition as her beau, and I am betting that's what it was, showed that the chemistry was nonexistent. We've all experienced those types of blind dates. Neither of them had the ability to even fake it, LOL.

I tend to agree. I know that young woman has a desire to provide hope and be a role model for other people going through what she is, and young people need someone like her. But at the same time she is still a child herself and too young to be able to grasp and agree to the full extent of what she's stepping into. A child just isn't old enough to consent to the risks of this, risks that include death threats.

I guess! I don't know if it's that I'm paying attention that closely or it's really more that I have a pretty good memory for detail. I've been told I have a photographic memory. If I'm listening, I tend to remember it.

There are other people here with really fine tuned memories as well. Some so impressive we've called them the blog historian!

Half the time they're whining about something, myself or someone else here will be able to cite to the exact words that contradict them.

Thanks for the great recap Admin. The Daily Mail (US) has an article that might be of interest. It's entitled "My mommy blog ruined my life: Mother reveals how her efforts to record every moment of child-bearing left her depressed AND DISTANCED FROM HER OWN CHILDREN". It made me think of TFW.

Based on new articles, I think her entire interactions with Jeff were about trying to create an episode out of dating him. It was implied Jeff felt very used and ended it.

http://www.tmz.com/2015/09/23/kate-gosselin-jeff-prescott-show-ratings-break-up/

I think they were testing out a dating story arch, but actually had a very difficult time finding any takers. I think Kate thinks anyone would sign on to be on TV for the right price, but I think it's just the opposite, most people aren't interested in that and especially when it involves dating a celeb. If any real feelings were beginning to develop on Jeff's part, I can see how he would be very turned off when she turns around and wants to exploit that on her show.

The kids don't know of those dates because those were not really as "dates" from Kate's perspective, but rather business and story development.

You have to be a seriously disturbed person to prey on someone else emotionally in order to create episodes you want. This is not a TV script, these are a man's real feelings.

It's another epic fail on Kate's part, she has been unable to get any man to sign onto this story arch. She can't find anybody willing.

Brava, Admin!!! I was so looking forward to this, and you did not disappoint!!! Oh, no, I've stolen TFW's exclamation points -- can she sue?

Yeah, her blather about her laser focus on her kids seems like a lot of malarkey when you juxtapose it with what she claimed worked best
for her family: being home for a week and then AWAY for a week. And don't forget the classic
"no news is good news" when she's away (read: please don't call me, and I'll assume all is
well, so I can enjoy my room service and spa treatments in peace).

The only time I'd believe she focuses 100% on
her children is when it comes to their flaws
or deficiencies. Or assigning chores.

Huh. Speaking of missing in action, I've been watching the only TLC show I watch Little People and I haven't seen those "I am" flaws promos or whatever they were, in ages.

Did they scrap those too, especially given the implication that things like being transgendered or very short are "flaws"????

I'm guessing that entire campaign went through the focus groups and had a bad response, much like it did here, and they're back to the drawing board.

A sign a network is in serious trouble is extensive tinkering and retooling and rescheduling. It seems as quick as they put out some campaign or schedule or promo, it disappears.

This is both heartbreaking and chilling. Yes promoting your family's ACTUAL life takes its toll, of course it does:

She started to plan family time around paid posts. “Someone wants to send us a board game while eating a certain cereal? That’s what we’re doing on Friday,” she says. “I was playing the game with them, but I wasn’t really there. I was watching and thinking about how I was going to caption the photo I’d take. It all took away from real time with my kids.”

She worked steady and non-stop and was making $12,000 in six months in sponsors. Or, $24,000 a year. Poverty level. You're better off taking a regular part time job, working way less hours, and forget all the promotions.

I like how she left the industry with a big F-U to remaining Mommy bloggers. Lol, heads will roll.

That's as far as I got in the recap. Had to chuckle. Is he straight?

&&&&

His parents are wondering the same thing.

Yeah, her blather about her laser focus on her kids seems like a lot of malarkey

&&&&

I think she does love her kids. But she's not as concerned with them as she wants us to think. If I had to armchair this, I would say she knows she's selfish and that much of what she does is about her own fun and riches. She outs herself when she leaves them in the dust to go do whatever she wants, or forces them to come along on activities she wants to do knowing full well the activity will make them miserable (because they're going to vomit, etc.)

But I think she is terrified of being "found out." Even though she already has been found out. She's terrified her cover will be blown and it will come out it's not REALLY about her kids.

It doesn't HAVE to be all about your kids all the time. As long as they are happy and well cared for I don't care if you want to go out and do something just for you once in awhile. Within reason. But I think she knows she takes that beyond reason, so overcompensates the other way by claiming to be all about the kids at all times at all hours at all seconds. In many ways, she's a fascinating psychological study.

Nope, not all want her to date, and it would be weird if they all did. Most kids hang onto the hope that their parents will reunite, and/or don't want another father or mother in the home.

&&&&

5 years later it appears that most of the kids are at best, indifferent to the idea.

That's typical of a 12 year old. It's very much about your own little world at that age, school, friends, sports, and it's hard to get too involved emotionally with much that's going on with your parents, much less their dating habits. That's just normal child development.

I didn't see any of the kids banging down doors saying get married Mommy! At best, a couple of them said well I guess if she WANTS to.

They need to talk about this with a therapist, not some producer.

Great recap, admin! Wow, that sounds like a particularly boring episode. I wonder why they don't make half-hour episodes any more. It seems that all of these episodes would be much better if they were half the time. Stretching them out to fill an hour just makes them painful. Did we really need to see Kate and the twins go into 3 different boutiques? How many times did the kids have to answer the same dating question in this episode to stretch it out and fill all that time?

I agree with the comment above about all the retooling of schedules. TLC's shows used to routinely get 2-3 million viewers (more for "specials"), and now they rarely see more than 1 or 1.5 million. Half what they used to get. The problem is--where do they go from here? They have turned themselves into a freak show, and people seem to be over that. How does the network change directions? They are so deeply ensconced, they may not be able to pull themselves out of their rut.

My DIL is watching the Say Yes To The Dress marathon, and there are tons of ads for upcoming shows--the one with the tall women, Sister Wives, Big Fat Fab Life, Outdaughtered, Jazz, Single Dads, etc, etc. No Kate. Hmmm...

Not everyone plays by your archaic cardinal rules.

I was being facetious with these rules (see, fruit salad), but there is nothing archaic about a man coming to her for their first date.

A man taught good manners is going to offer to go to *her* neighborhood for the date, not the other way around. If good manners are "archaic", so be it. But it's how you get the girl.

I don't know Kate but I'd bet money that Steve's been c*ck blocking for years. I've been in the camp who believes Kate and Steve have been intimate since he first insinuated himself into her life, but I think they both have an understanding about keeping it quiet (so Kate can be the single-mother martyr) and not wanting to go public.
I think Kate loves her independence and probably doesn't want to get hitched, especially not when her fame was burning bright.
I think Kate wants someone to share the work with her, to make things easier, but she's not interested in being a loving partner to anyone.
Anyone Kate spouts off about wanting her big policeman-type guy to keep her kids in line, it's got nothing to do with giving on her part whatsoever.

It's too risky to align herself with a man legally. He might object to filming at some point, like Jon eventually did. He might want to call some of the shots and make decisions different than what she wants. He might object to her agenda.

Just stumbled across this article. If you have the time, please read it. A former mommy blogger, who got sponsorships talks about how staged her life and her kids' life became after a while. How she couldn't relax at family outings, snapped hundreds of pictures at a single event(staged ones).

Quote: "I posted the pictures with a caption that said, "We had SUCH a great time grilling Sunday!" and it’s like, "No, actually we didn’t even do that on Father’s Day. We did it a month ago so the content would be ready."'

With that said, she didn't have a contract with a television(which is much more rigid) yet their lives still became a production. Yet there stands Kate Gosselin, trying to convince the world that her little children were just running in and out of the frame, with no plan ever in place.

Your idea of "good manners" is not mine. If there's something interesting happening in his neighborhood that would make a fun date, I'm more than happy to go to him.

&&&&

She went to another STATE, not the next neighborhood.

It never bothered me much when people chew with their mouths open, but I also recognize that it's good manners and should be adhered to. So too is it a good manners that, on the FIRST date and FIRST meeting, a man offers to come to you or at the very least meet halfway. Regardless of whether you're willing to go to him, that shows respect and good manners. Or if there is something in his neighborhood more his way, acknowledge that I know it's more my direction BUT this sounds like fun. This is how men secure girlfriends, then wives.

Perhaps this is why Vann can't seem to find the right one. He is assuming every woman is like you, looking the other way on basic good manners. A dangerous assumption.

And a helicopter ride on a blind date??? Total TLC. I doubt the Deanna/Vann connection too that they are friends are whatever. Deanna works in show business and most likely she asked around if someone knew someone willing to appear in a reality show or TLC put out feelers for a candidate. After Jeff bailed, they needed a substitute.

What really struck me about the Mommy blogger article is how hard she worked for so long for such little rewards. A $125 promotional check here and there which amounted to about $24,000 a year. And she was one of the really popular ones.

I think some of these Mommy bloggers are unable to see the forest through the trees. In their quest to make money the "easy" way they end up working harder and longer than if they just got a part time job in a traditional industry. I think she said she was in hospitality or something. She worked before. So go back part time and get daycare. Chances are it will amount to more than 24k a year, and you can keep your privacy and preserve time with your kids.

Yards generally do look amazing when they're tended to by a landscaping company.
Hmm...TLC must have put borrowed stunt hostas around the driveway trees for the kids' birthday episode a couple years back. They really made the property look great, with hostas around almost every tree.
Now, hostas are perennial and grow back bigger and better each year, yet there are no plants around the trees.
Not saying it's good or bad, just odd that they would actually plant JUST for the look, and haul it away after filming.
Chalk it up to more staging.

Maybe this is an old picture pre-hostas and she hasn't put any flags out at all but since the sheeple asked for a picture she had to deliver. She probably picked the one that looked the best to her. Although they are hardy and almost destructive-proof, they can meet their demise if the weather is harsh. I lost about 75 percent of mine last winter. I thought they'd come around. They didn't. That's on my to-do list for today. Plant more!

I don't believe it's an old picture because in the past the beds surrounding the trees were full of weeds. I do believe the sheeple think she gets out there and mulches that property, LOL. Don't know about the hostas but I would think deer would be a problem. From the photos I saw posted of the yard work show, my impression was that the hostas were near the house? Are you guys saying there were hostas planted underneath those trees? If so, the deer either mowed them down or the hostas were indeed temporary for the show. Hostas, even in a harsh winter, will survive in her planting zone. It's possible her hostas have not emerged yet, but doubtful this late. The mulch under the tres looks fairly new.

She is paying some big bucks to maintain that property if my postage stamp yard with a landscape company is any comparison. Her driveway looks nice but somebody did that mulching and it wasn't her!

Yes, it does look like the hostas are more toward the house.

These 2 pictures are looking towards the house.

Here’s the one from July 2014, which is also taken from the same direction away from the house:

So it seems that the hostas are just around the trees closest to the house.

It could be a different view, but in my gardening experience, it was dumb to plant hostas under mature trees with all the roots. I bet you the hostas were potted and mulched over for the filming.

Dmasy said...

Whenever we talking gardening, my fingers itch to contribute. I had many Hosta plants in Illinois. They are hardy. But, as PA Mom said, a really harsh winter will kill them or severely set them back. Extreme water will cause crown rot which kills the plant from the root up. It is a slow and ugly death.

Hosta plants grow will at the base of some trees. They will not survive under any tree that produces a chemical called Juglone. (Practically nothing will grow -- guess who learned that the stubborn way?)

Sometimes, I miss digging around in my large lawn area. Life is easier in Texas with our retirement-sized yard, but I miss life in the countryside.

&&&&

That is exactly what has struck me ever since Milo came back.

BS, Goody didn't know a thing about what was going on with her. When Milo got back Milo very strongly implied she has been struggling with something, and now she's dropping huge hints about medical issues.

Goody played it off like oh, just family obligations. Goody, in my opinion, did NOT know what was going on but outright lied for Milo anyway. I don't understand the purpose of that. Kate and some of her fans seem to have no problem with lying, certainly white lies and sometimes even bigger ones. I think that's part of why they relate to Kate, Kate freely lies and they don't see a problem with it. Again, it's that difference in values thing.

For those interested, Roots pulled in 5.3 million on Memorial Day. Meh.

5.3 is considered respectable, but not blowing anyone away. Breaking Bad's series finale pulled double that. So, putting it on Memorial Day may not have been the best decision after all, as we were discussing several days ago.

To put it in perspective, the original Roots reached 36 million at its peak. Ratings expectations have really changed in the last few years.

‘Roots’ has strong premiere for History

The opening installment of the four-part
miniseries drew 5.3 million viewers across its four-channel premiere (History, A&E, Lifetime and LMN). That’s the best same-day debut for a miniseries on cable since “Bonnie & Clyde” opened to nearly 10 million people across three channels in December 2013.

“Roots” drew 1.8 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic, which translates to a 1.4 rating. That will likely rank it third for the night across all of TV, behind a record-setting NBA playoff game on TNT and “The Bachelorette” on ABC.

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2016/05/31/roots-has-strong-premiere-for-history/

The original "Roots" aired in 1977. A lot has changed in the past 40 years.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Yes things have changed big time!!! But the problem with comparing it to other modern miniseries is there are so FEW miniseries to compare it too. That's because the miniseries format is largely dead, with only a few offerings catching any traction over the past few years.

Compared to some of the regular shows that have popped up on those or similar channels, 5.3 is at best, average. They were hoping for a blockbuster, a record breaker, and didn't get it. Pulling out a few obscure records is an attempt to save face. I cannot even imagine the ratings Kate would have gotten if her episode had aired that night, but it likely would have been pitiful if a major television event can only manage to secure barely 5 million.

It's a shame, because I thought Roots was very well done. My mom lamented that she very much liked the older one and just couldn't get into this one, but I found the pacing and sense of suspense in part 1 was as good as a feature film. About to watch part 2. Programming is largely a game of blind man's bluff, and they took a chance because prior premieres on Memorial Day worked. It didn't pan out. They don't have as much flexibility for a major event as TLC does for their shows to move things around last minute. Roots had already been advertised for Memorial Day across multiple platforms, it was too late to take it back.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

How does it work when something airs on three different channels? Does History get to take credit for 5.3 when many of them were watching it on Lifetime or A&E?

The Thorn Birds was dare I say the greatest miniseries of all time. That theme song! Although I went back and watched it last year before going to Australia and I forgot how f--Ed up it was. That weird scene where grandma sees father Ralph naked? And seems to have a thing for him? The whole love affair in the first place with the priest. Not to mention pretty much Maggie has the worst luck in the world, everyone she loves the most ends up dead. Best to stop loving. I read the book last year too. What an interesting, meleodramaric journey.

The thorn birds came up quite a bit when I was there. It's their claim to fame abroad. Seems to me Australians don't know whether to be proud or embarrassed by it.

The series is reminiscent of Bond films, and has the same slick feel.

The Thorn Birds is a classic. Just such great television-almost on the Breaking Bad level but not quite. I watched an hour of the new Roots and that was it. Did not watch Roots remake. Still slowly watching Season 2 of Grace and Frankie. Really sharp writing and great cast.

As far as Milo and Goody, they should have gotten their stories straight. Milo is just going for a pity party and uses the health excuse for missing opportunities to meet her heroine. I bet Milo is obese, not petite as she describes herself. She's all about Kate's body...very envious. That's why this person comes off as attracted to Kate. Not only that, but Milo's friends consist of her tweet buddies, so I'm going with a lonely overweight woman projecting her body issues onto a D lister who uses her devotion to rally the handful that believe Kate's nonsense. It's sad but in the internet world, people catfish all the time. Milo blends the truth with fantasy. Her family should be concerned. Just because a "celebrity" tweets to you does not make you a part of their life, inner circle, or their buddy.

This is a unique thing where a series was shown across multiple networks. I would tabulate them both ways--by network, then the total amount. They seem to only want to to talk about the total amount.

History Channel could very well have only gotten 1 million, who knows. To claim 5.3 million when there were two other networks involved is a head scratcher.

Other remakes have done really well and most of the demographics of TV viewers networks care about were babies or not even born yet when the first Roots aired, so I'm not sure how much that played a role in the lack of interest for most viewers.

As a teen, I saw the original years after it aired because my parents made a point of renting it and showing it to me. I loved it. It *was* a masterpiece, I have to say. The particular scene where Kunta Kinte first sees white men walking through the woods with slaves and hides behind a tree to watch was absolutely heart stopping. But I still had a very curious interest in the remake.

Part 2 was strong, and I do like this Kunta Kinte too. Although, the actor is playing the character with such a fire in his belly, such flashes of anger in his eyes, that I found myself thinking, gosh Kunta Kinte has anger issues. He is completely embracing the caged animal aspect of Kunta the fueled his many brave escape attempts that eventually led to tragedy, but we don't see as much of his tender side, which LeVar Burton captured so well. LeVar was 19 years old when he filmed that, and it was his first ever acting job, which is all the more impressive.

Well maybe, but Americans have gotten really into very high quality series and appreciated them, like Breaking Bad.

I really think the bulk of this problem is the sheer number of choices out there on TV every night.

When Roots first aired you choice was Roots, a sitcom, or the news.

Now when Roots aired you have 300 other choices and niche channels. You could watch Tiny Houses, or a sports game, cooking, some Real Housewives, or people who work on a boat for rich people, a variety of movies old and new. Not to even mention the thousands of good programming you could watch on Netflix and other streaming devices.

Obviously if the only dish you put out is steak people will go for the steak. But if you put out steak, chicken, shrimp, rice and beans, and 10 other dishes, expect less votes for steak.

Things must really be bad off camera. Then she was sulking because Matt and the kids were taking pictures with the children they invited to the farm and she wasn't asked to have hers taken with them. Why didn't she just go over there and get in the pictures with her kids and the guest kids? Maybe she wanted an engraved invitation. I suppose that will jack up ratings though.

Amy talks to him disrespectfully and created work for him when she messed up his fields doing donuts with the mule. Matt takes over projects Amy is trying to make her own in some strange attempt to one up her or exert control. The problem is this deep into a marriage that revolved around the business it's clearly impossible for either of them to make a complete break. They need each other as much as they can't have a healthy marriage. Neither of them seems to want to do the sensible thing and either dissolve their businesses or buy each other out.

I'm curious what the budget and schedule was on Roots.

I'm a visual person and I have noticed the cinematography hasn't really been that interesting. Some shots even feel rushed, and the majority were filmed at high noon. I would have loved some sweeping sunrise or sunset shots of the African tundra, or the various plantations, swamps, etc.

Now into part 3, it really has a made-for-TV feel to it, rather than an epic film, like the first Roots felt like.

I think when Roots first came out no one had told the story of slavery in such an emotionally striking way. It was groundbreaking.

Since then hundreds of important films have been made about the topic, many striking just as much of an emotional impact. I'm thinking 12 Years a Slave, and Amistad. There are so many good offerings out there, I'm afraid a Roots remake is kind of getting lost.

Jon and Colleen look very happy together. If Kate had any sense, she would have become a nurse practitioner. Excellent track in nursing, great lifelong career, good money and benefits.
Oh, but a tad mediocre, so, scratch that.

Why would she do that when she has her kids to work *for* her? It's nothing but laziness on her part, in addition to being mediocre. You've got to milk those kids as long as you can.

Blowing In The Wind said...

If Milo and Kate are any example, platitudes are often for people who are all show, and no go.

------------------

The thing about Milo's platitudes is that they can be taken as to pertaining to her. You can turn them right around and what she is tweeting certainly applies to her. She's just too dumb to get it.

There was no turning back for Kate, once she realized how much money those kids could make for her, as long as they are minors and under her control.
She owns them and treats them as property.

What kids, pray tell, would be searching for Kate? LOL! I think that kids would be looking for their latest heart throbs/idols, NOT Kate Gosselin! But I agree, it's gotten a bit smutty over there!

@TLC...take care of Kate's twitter timeline like you used to do anytime Kate snapped her fingers!
@Twitter....don't you KNOW WHO KATE GOSSELIN( AND HER VERIFIED ACCOUNT) IS?

I mean, this is Kate Gosselin we're talking about!

Milo, dear, the porn has been on Kate's timeline for quite awhile now, and if Kate was upset enough to contact Twitter, they either would have done something about it by now, or they can't.
The bottom line is that Kate CHOOSES to keep her anemic, neglected and bot and hate-filled twitter account open despite the fact that these salacious porn posts have been littering it.

Kate's a big girl Milo. She's made the decision to let kids look up her twitter account and see filthy language, hate and porn. If Kate wanted to ensure that doesn't happen, she'd shut down the darn account.

Another example of buying bots en mass is this "Kate Gosselin hair cut" meme that litters her timeline.
Kate's haircut is not in the zeitgeist anymore, c'mon. Yet, negatively referencing her ill-conceived coif happens daily.
I guess it gets Kate a mention when a celebrity like Beiber gets an asymmetrical haircut.

If you mess up rows in a field I think it really can be hours and hours of work to repair it. She did it in a field Matt uses.

That said, I don't think Amy meant to cause Matt more work. I don't think she thought about it. She said it was just a spur of the moment thing. They both could have handled the situation better. He could have said I'm sure you didn't realize this but doing donuts in the field is hard to fix. I want you to have fun with your friends and do donuts, let's find a spot on the farm you can do them and not cause damage.

She could have apologized and said what can I do to fix the damage, I'm happy to help.

Instead as per the usual they both came at each other rather hostile.

What "clout" would Kate have at Twitter? She's nobody to them. Verified only means they verified she owns the account. That's the end. No power. No clout.

Lol, poor Milo running around in circles. Go get some lemonade or something, cool off. It's just porn.

All this fuss. Sounds like just some standard issue spamming to me. Report it to Twitter, they'll take it down. It probably won't be THAT second, but they'll get to it. They are leaps and bounds better at cleanup lately. Running around like banshees just calls more attention to it! Goodness, but for Milo I wouldn't have even known about any of this. I think lots of people, if not the majority, use Twitter without ever looking at someone's timeline, but rather they just look at the actual tweets that person puts out. Timelines are for heavy users or special interest users.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I just looked at some of the "porn" which is mostly just photos of porn-type women.

This is CLEARLY bots. This is not a real person. The posts don't even say anything meaningful except key words like "Kate Gosselin", "nude", "sex", "#kate", etc. A computer generated this, without a shadow of a doubt.

It's probably coming from the same IP, so just report it to Twitter and they'll block it and it'll go ways. Someone else on her timeline said it best, when you buy bots you get what you get, and things can go haywire.

I find this all quite hilarious in the outrage over such a temporary problem that is so easy to fix.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Oh and back to the donuts thing, it can also cause serious damage to the vehicle. Those mules are very expensive.

I hate siding with Matt because generally I think he's too uptight and controlling, but he's right about this one. Donuts are both a pain in the butt to clean up and could damage the mule. If this were their teenager, there would be a serious punishment for it. It's his approach that wasn't right, treating her like she intentionally meant to ruin his day. She didn't.

Absolutely.

Also, I dislike platitudes for the same reason others here dislike.

I don't like talkers, I like doers. Don't tell me about your faith. Live it. Don't tell me what inspires you, but live a life that is inspired. There are few platitudes worth actually posting. It also strikes me as a bit immature. Platitudes are what high school girls cut out and tape to their mirrors because they're at an age of feeling especially inspired by role models. Most people grow out of that, developing their own independent ideas.

I'm happy to see "Outdaughtered" is on Paul Petersen's radar. Yes, if everything's on the up and up, I'm sure TLC will share the work permits with the public, right? I guess they were counting on filming the snot out of these new kids until someone cried foul. And, sadly, the Busby parents seem quite happy to have their daughters help fund their new celebrity lifestyle. Network happy, parents happy...everyone happy but the 6 little girls who are having their childhoods on display while they're too young to provide informed consent.

While I'm also happy to see the Busby parents on Paul Peterson's radar and he was instrumental in getting laws passed in PA due to the Gosselin situation, I don't think TLC or any state government is going to make work permits or other information public.

Case in point, I tried to contact the appropriate people when I had questions about the two Gosselin kids recently being 'forced' to film when they were ill. I talked to a very nice lady in the governor's office who assured me that everything was fine who only contacted the person in charge of the work permits, etc. when I politely insisted and came back with his answer of everything is "fine". She would not provide contact information for the person stating "he gets a lot of calls about the Gosselins". I got the distinct impression that PA feels like they have done their duty by passing the laws, but I doubt there's any due diligence in following up on any issues beyond making sure the work permits are in order.

Unfortunately, these situations will not resolve until the American public tires of watching parents using multiples to fund their lifestyle, no story lines are left to explore, and/or the children age/are no longer interesting.

The last 2 scenarios seem to be happening to TFW, but the Busbys still have lots of good years left to film.
