Recap: Kate Plus 8 ''School Prep": Typically, everything purchased in this episode can be found much easier online, in general

Next time on the little people, little people swimming!

Coming up on Kate Plus 8, school shopping for clothes, backpacks, and Kate gets distracted by something shiny and starts buying things for herself. This is a literal repeat of at least a couple other back-to-school boring episodes, including Kate buying much more for herself than for the kids. No one in production is even trying to do something original, and why would they when phoning it in is enough? Kate doesn't believe in being fair because that wastes money. She should write a blog post on saving money by not being fair, Dave Ramsey would be proud.

It's always about Kate, Cara explains, who is old enough to be on to her mother but not old enough to realize when she should probably shush, which is my favorite age.

Kate is more orange than usual today in her couch interviews--I would say it's "Trump orange," which is a color I better patent soon before someone else steals it. But in the footage of her packing up the van her hue is back to normal, which is more eggshell white. Hannah gets stress headaches, Kate says as she discloses what should be confidential medical information. At 11 she's stressed? What on earth is she stressed about? Kate packs her into the van with a blanket.

Is that a booster seat? Wtf? I understand the carseat guidelines have shifted to include much older children now (in Pennsylvania, the law is booster seat up until age 7), but these kids are all way too old for that now. Most seat belts will fit children 4'9 and up comfortably and safely. None of these children are that short anymore. Give it up, Kate, they are not toddlers and haven't been for a long time.

It looks horrendous carting a sick child to the mall, I know, Kate says. Correct, it does. So why do it? A set teacher certainly wouldn't permit this or risk losing their license. Kate did the same to one of the boys not too long ago. They have a full time nanny, why can't Hannah stay behind with her? Kate explains this is just a Hannah thing and she'll get over it in a few hours.

There's Shoka again, a mere inches from the moving tires of a several-ton vehicle. Grr!!!

Dowdy Deanna just happened to be visiting and takes the twins off separately at the mall. Why couldn't Deanna stay home with Hannah, and make the twins suck it up and go with Kate and the rest of their siblings? Why do I hurt my brain wondering these things?

The boys say they don't like shopping other than for toys. By the looks of them they don't much enjoy endless couch interviews either as Aaden tosses his head back and lets out a huge yawn.

You know something that I didn't notice much in the past but is really starting to irritate me? How funny-cute Kate thinks she is. She tries to make these little self-depricating jokes and they're just annoying, not funny. "I get distracted by things I want to buy .... maybe I even acted like a person who had never been to a mall before. Did I remind you of someone like that? " She smiles like a goon.

Typically, no one cares what was done in year's past or why or how they need what they need, who likes what or doesn't, and all the whining and begging that ensues.

Joel says they don't want the same backpacks because that makes them look younger. Exactly!! Of course the kids don't want to dress alike or have the same things, contrary to the sheeple claiming maybe they like that. Of course they don't like that, no 11-year-old likes looking like a baby. The only nice thing about the fact that these kids a decade later are still working is that they are validating pretty much everything we predicted about how they likely feel.

I enjoy watching Kate try to reason with a pre-teen. It's one of the few tolerable things left of this God forsaken reality show.

The kids want her to buy them water bottles but Kate passes on that, initially anyway. She says bottles get dirty and disgusting and they leave water in them and she ends up being the one always cleaning them out. I can't disagree there, reusable water bottles are a great idea in your perfect green fantasy but rarely work out in reality. I have a Contiga cup which is an incredible invention, when I get around to cleaning out last month's English breakfast tea.

Half a minute later Kate's buying them water bottles. She is either the biggest pushover in the world or is just trying to be on her best behavior for the cameras. Much like how she parents in general, she only seems to understand the tangible aspect of raising kids, the stuff, the things. She doesn't understand good parenting is not that you bought kids water bottles because they really wanted them, but rather good parenting is making sure your sick child stays home with someone they trust instead of being dragged along on this trip, or better yet shop on another day. Hannah says shopping stresses her mom out. I wonder if that's why Hannah in turn gets stressed out.

Kate selects some tupperware and admits 90% of her shopping is done online. I was just going to say why don't they buy all this crap online like normal people? Does anyone even go to malls anymore? Malls are closing across the country at an alarming rate because people just don't go anymore. You can get better deals online usually anyway, and almost all stores now have a liberal return policy with free shipping no questions asked. You save stress, time, and gas and can try things on in the comfort of your own home. I'm guessing the other 10% of Kate's big box store shopping occurs solely because of the cameras.

During an excruciatingly boring conversation about gym clothes I can hear one of the kids politely saying "excuse me, Mommy," trying to get her attention. She is ignored of course. It makes sense now why these kids shout, scream and stomp around so much. Being quiet and polite gets you nowhere.

We're moving "owwn" to the next thing which is I guess clothes. This could easily have been the same footage from the premiere episode of this season, School's Out! where they went to the department store to buy luggage. It's that similar. Kate's helping Leah pick out some dresses and Alexis wants something too. Naturally Kate's comment about how shopping isn't always going to be fair was about Alexis, the least girlie of the girls. Figures. I'm not sure I even agree with Kate about how it can't be fair. It seems like this can easily be made fair. Give the kids each $50, $75 or whatever your budget is and have them pick out what they want with your approval. They're old enough to handle the money and pick out their clothes and that makes it perfectly fair. That noggin of hers sure thinks funny.

This is rather interesting, I assumed the twins didn't want to shop with the younger kids because they seem to hate sharing the same planet as them, but Mady reveals that actually she doesn't understand why she didn't shop with the other kids since she needs clothes too, and that she "wasn't allowed." Wasn't allowed by whom? Production? Conversely, Kate claims the twins didn't want to shop with the younger kids. I immediately assume Kate's lying and Mady's telling the truth. So was separating them out done to have two separate shopping segments and stretch this out? Hmm!!

Anywho, the twins are with Deanna and picking out stuff and it's all absolutely uneventful and boring. Kate buys their boring stuff and then does that sarcastic "thank you, Mommy," thing that some annoying parents say to their kids when their kids forget to say thank you. In defense of Mady, Kate started it, and Mady explains that she was going to say thank you, was in fact about to say it. I'm going to give Mady the benefit of the doubt on this. They had just bought the shoes, at least give the child until the car ride home to thank her.

This sets Mady off on a snide little tirade, accusing Kate of treating her like a brat. "Thank you, but you can say it to yourself," she snaps, whatever that means. She is I would guess about six months away from saying, "Thank you, but you should be thanking us because that's our money you're buying it with." Just ask the former child actor Missy Francis how old she was when she realized the same about her mother and started embezzling her own money to herself just to be sure she'd see any of it by the time she was 18.

Mady can be trying, she's mean to her siblings and I think the way Kate allows her to speak to her is completely unacceptable, but I also understand what Mady's saying here, and that is that Kate is unreasonable, disrespectful and patronizing to her, yet expects perfect respect back. It's a set-up, it's unfair and certainly very obnoxious.

All Kate can do is sigh and ignore her at this point, and I think she's wise to shut up and just let Mady say her peace. Kate won't take any of it to heart though, which is a pity. A little give and take with this dysfunctional relationship might do wonders.

It's a good thing we're not playing a drinking game this afternoon because I'd be soused to the gills. I just heard two typicallys and an "in general." Kate basically admits she's bribing the kids with pretzels. To buy shoes, or really just to stick around and film? I sense the latter. Mmm, I love mall pretzels. And mall cinnamon buns. That's all I miss about malls now that I don't go anymore like most people. Speaking of which, some of the finest television "short films" were made in a Cinnabon in Omaha. Watch Better Call Saul, the best show on television this year, and you'll understand.

I love the way Lancaster is pronounced in Pennsylvania: Lane-kes-ter. That is the correct way if I may say so. We have a Lancaster here, a medium-sized city in L.A. County but pronounced Lan-caster, and to go with its inferior pronunciation it's a desert with lots of snakes and varmints and not enough gas stations to run your tank down to almost empty and be fine.

How ironic, Kate has wonderful fond memories of her grandparents taking her to the mall. Grandpa gave them each $5 to spend. Sounds like even ole Gramps understands how to make shopping "fair."

The store didn't have a good selection of shoes, didn't have their sizes or the styles they want, and it doesn't look like they ended up buying anything. Remember those days? Now we have the inter-webs, where I promise you can find your size and style somewhere in that vast wonderland even if you might have to resort to ebay. Kate says for the second time how much she hates all this. Well, she makes it harder on herself. All this could be accomplished with a few clicks and a credit card that's already automatically entered by the little green men at Google.

The little people are swimming again, which I realize now was a good excuse for production to try out their underwater camera rigs. They don't come cheap.

We're back with a completely unrelated subplot storyline to plot A, about how they're going to refurbish their picnic table. Kate and the younger kids head to the hardware store. The twins complain that they were not told they were going to the hardware store, they just woke up and they were gone. Sheesh, I hope schmoopy at least left them a note! Assuming it's true, that the twins weren't informed of this outing, this is what I mean by Kate not respecting them. You can't be as rude and inconsiderate as she apparently is to them, then expect respect back. It's a two-way street.

Kate admits she doesn't "typically" take them to do errands like this, but the cameras are here so .... well, she really claims she took them them because this is going to be a whole-family project, but the truth is the kids are just in her way and she's not making any effort to include them in this shopping trip, and this is really about the cameras.

Mady and Cara couldn't be more unenthused about helping to sand the table. They're insufferable but understandable.

Kate pulls out a power sander and makes a whole big deal about operating this machinery. This happened before too, just a couple episodes ago when she worked with a chain saw. I hate women who think its funny and cute when they tackle traditionally male jobs and act all damsel in distress about it. At one time this show recycled plot ideas from a season or two ago, now it's just an episode or two ago. It's like a blond bimbo high-pitched awful version of Groundhog Day, a movie I hate in the first placeHa, Kate's awful at sanding, it runs every which way taking the scenic route down the table. Either that or she's really playing up the woman fumbling around with power tools gag. Amy Schumer she is not.

Of course most of the kids start to gradually wander away, bored, now that Kate is power sanding and not including them or even letting them try it. What does she expect?

Just an observation now that yet another too long and boring segment is over, but why didn't they pull out the power sander sooner? Why did they all sit there with sandpaper blocks and slave away for who knows how long when Kate had a power sander right there all along that could have done the entire job in 10 minutes?

This is a rhetorical questions I suppose, and the answer to most of my rhetorical questions is usually, because it was being filmed. It makes no sense to do things quickly and efficiently when you're being filmed, then you'd never be able to find enough footage to fill up 60 minutes of this drivel every week. You can only roll your eyes I guess. The kids are half onto all this and will be all the way there soon.

Commercials, and when we get back they're still sanding that god damned picnic table! I feel like I'm in sandpaper purgatory and can't get out. A somewhat new thing they are doing during the kids' couch interviews is have them say the same thing at the same time. It's Children of the Corn creepy.

Amy Schumer here is working with an air compressor now, acting all inept again. Blow me.

Kate's glad the full-time nanny Andrea happened to be there since for some reason Andrea knows about how to stain picnic tables. Why wouldn't Andrea be there? She is their full-time nanny. The kids trickle back in now, interested in painting. Instead of whining about it, maybe Kate should just appreciate what they are willing to help with, little as it is. Finally after two long segments the table is finished, it looks great and the kids are mildly proud of their efforts. It really is amazing what a little sanding and staining can do. That's what she said.

Commercials, this time the promo is about people who are 600 pounds and a network that still pretends watching people pull their rolls of fat out from their pants and roll it around has educational value.

We're back with the third subplot in this episode that's actually related to the school shopping this time, final preparations for their first day of school. Mady makes an interesting comment that it's not cool to be entering high school, though she likes they don't have to wear uniforms anymore. I have never in all my life met a kid who wasn't thrilled to finally be going to high school with the big kids, even if there were a little first day nerves about it. It's just a strange comment. The twins are going shopping for clothes again? The first trip wasn't enough?

They're at one of those small boutique clothing shops that most women can't afford to shop at until at least a decade after college is over and several salaried paychecks later. In typical Mady and Cara fashion the twins are ungrateful, disagreeable and unhelpful to the very nice salesperson helping them who apparently cleared the store out for them. Kate defends their rude and unacceptable behavior by saying she was just like that as a teen. Well, then they get it from her.

Kate can't help herself and goes after all the shiny stuff, grabbing up dresses and blouses and handbags like it's a pop-up swag tent. The twins knew that would happen, heh.

Kate's still defending Mady who is making snide comments by saying it was actually a round-about way for Mady to say Kate looked nice. Lol! Kate, "oh my gosh you look like a human" is not a nice comment no matter how you twist and turn yourself around to make it one. She is the worst, no wonder these twins are the way they are. The music during this segment was pulled from stock 17th century harpsichords, which is random.

Up next, they're going to another boutique??? I really am in shock how much is being repeated and recycled in this episode, and the sheer greed I'm witnessing.

At last the final segment. What's the point in clearing out an expensive boutique for ungrateful teenagers if they don't like anything? Cara is actually arguing with Kate that she has enough summer clothes, she doesn't want anymore, and Mady doesn't seem to want anything at this place. Why in the world is Kate pushing them into buying summer clothes on a back-to-school trip in the Northeast when 95% of your school year will be spent in winter clothes?

Kate complains they're in a phase where they have very narrow likes and don't want to branch out. So? That's normal. At that age I think I had one or two sweaters and a pair of jeans I wore to death, as long as they are washed regularly it's not hurting anything.  What does Kate care? Just get them what they like, online, and be done with it. She really picks a lot of fights she doesn't need to.

Mady gives Kate one too many "it's all about you" comments and Kate finally loses her shit, haha. Love it.

A third store???? This is truly agonizing. Just take my word for it absolutely nothing interesting happened here. Kate suggests she and Mady get these completely ugly sweater pants and share them, "share custody of them" she says. Oh yeah cause Kate's so great at sharing custody of anything. Mady, you'll never see those sweater pants again except maybe for a Tuesday night dinner once in awhile but that's it.

It's finally over, and next time we pick out more clothes but at least it's for Kate's fake-date, and her rather cute (!) suitor, nice selection from all those head shots, production! Baw-hahhaa, the side hug and turned cheek at the end of the date. Shade! Cannot wait.

Little people playing with bubbles, and we're out.

Someone on twitter did mention how supernanny was also against spanking.I also believe the nannies on nanny 911 also said they were against it.I remember i used this argument one time against the Kate fans 2 years ago

&&&&

Most child development experts are now against it as it has been linked to many serious problems including aggression, mental illness, and crime, and has proven no more effective that discipline methods that don't involve violence. Even for very difficult children. There is also an understanding now that spanking teaches children to avoid misbehaving out of fear, rather than developing an understanding for why parents and society want and expect good behavior instead of bad.

I would never assume that someone's struggles are minimal based solely on their income level. I think that's a giant generalization and an inaccurate one to boot.

Rich people can face struggles just like anyone else but they also have much easier access to high quality medical and mental health care, services, and a support network.

If I come down with an incurable disease tomorrow, of course that would be a struggle, but I also know I can afford excellent health insurance, some of the best medical care in the world, have a loving and supportive family both here and elsewhere who can be by my side, a solid church family, and on. I have it MUCH better than someone struggling financially or alone. I think most people understand how blessed they are to be living a firm middle-class, in some case upper-middle or rich lifestyle. I think some people understand struggles are much easier to deal with when you are part of the world's 1%. Kate doesn't seem to get that though, not even close.

IMO, the table had been neglected for a long time and was very weathered. They breathed some new life into it by refinishing it, but I'm with Admin and I don't think it was made of barn wood.

100% agree. It was not reclaimed wood, barn wood, or anything interesting or special.

It was a boilerplate factory assembled picnic table you get at Costco.

Not that there's ANYTHING wrong with that. It's just an outdoor picnic table. As long as it serves its purpose, a nice place to sit outside, I don't see why you should spend much on it at all.

"You're not a 'real' lawyer" is about as cruel and cutting a thing as you can say to someone like Jimmy who so badly wants in to that profession and did work very hard to get there. I really have had my mind blown about how much this show understands the emotional relationship lawyers have to their profession, for many the "lawyer career" part of them is like an extension of them, a living breathing thing.

I completely understand you. We clergy are our careers too. We cannot separate who we are from what we do for a living.

KyPastor, yes, I suspect that is true of any job where the career tends to merge with "self". Pastors, doctors and nurses, all in that category. There are jobs you go to and put on your job hat then take it off at the end of the day, and then there are jobs that are who you are as a PERSON. Better Call Saul has captured this in all its pain and beauty.

NJ, oops, forgot that. Yes, that is an Italian thing, heaven forbid! (crosses self)

I would posit it is exactly because Kate gained so much wealth and fame, that she ended her marriage and cut off most of her friends and family. She created the woes she so loves to complain about, yet acts like she's been a passive participant in her fate.
Kate has had, and continues to have, blessings raining upon her for a decade, but on the whole, she is a very, very negative, mouth-turned-down mope of of woman.
Moreover, it is within her power to change SO many things in her life, but she refuses to do so. Reconciling relationships, moving on, letting bygones by bygones, co-parenting effectively, and streamlining her lifestyle to make it less cost-intensive.
In a word, let go of her pride, and in another word, pray for grace.
Some people admire Kate's stubborn nature, and applaud her go-it-alone-I-am-an-island bluster.
I don't. I think she's way more lucky than good.
Moreover, I know better. I know she does not do everything herself and has more help than most people can possibly imagine.

And, as a very wealthy woman compared to most people in the U.S., she can afford intensive, in-home therapy with a licensed therapist to help her come to terms with all of that dysfunction and change things about how she lives her life. She can also afford a psychological evaluation and if need be, medication and other psycho-treatment.

You don't get to cry woe is me I have it tough when you make no effort to change anything about what's tough about your life or take advantage of all the resources out there to assist you. Do you know how many struggling people out there would love to be able to afford to pay a professional to help them get better?

Did you all see this???

Apparently match.com has pulled an ad campaign that bears an alarming similarity to TLC's ad campaign in the way it has highlighted what they see as "imperfections". People were outraged that they would call something like "freckles" imperfections. IMO, TLC'S ad was much worse, implying genetic mutations or gender identity are "flaws".

I can't remember that episode at all. Did I recap it? Kate said they got the table I think when they got the house.

Oh my God, it looks so cheap now! What happened? It doesn't surprise me they would take such poor care of a table given to them for free.

I have a reclaimed barn wood kitchen table. Did she claim in the episode that it was the picnic table that was made by Steve Thomas? If it is a barn wood table, then well worth keeping and staining. I did not watch that Steve Thomas grifting episode so had no idea he built her a picnic table. Those solar panels are still on the roof so that was a nice expensive grift. Can't believe she asked for two tables! Geez.

Teachers may be at a true calling in their profession but darn if they aren't martyrs bellyaching all the time about poor pay, long hours and such. If you don't like the draw backs of your profession, get out. Or better yet, quit being a martyr. Sure, there are a few good ones in all professions, but they are all just people.

&&&

I pretty much see what you're saying and don't necessarily disagree except for I take a more glass half full approach. I think the people I have encountered in various professions like lawyers, doctors, teachers are mostly good at what they do or even great, with a few bad seeds mixed in. And not the other way around.

I don't think anyone was saying KATE was lying. There was a poster who was just talking about the reclaimed wood and I truly didn't remember any episode about that (and truthfully, still don't, although clearly there was one). The table still doesn't look like anything other than standard factory to me, but apparently it's not. It really doesn't matter and has nothing to do with Kate lying about anything. It was my honest mistake. We're human.

Right. No one said Kate was lying, so pay attention, sheep. I said that Kate went from spending like a Babylonian princess to refinishing a picnic table that's worth less than the cost of the supplies to refinish it.

Someone mentioned that it is made of reclaimed wood, and so what? It's a saggy, old table that truly isn't worth any more than a new one from Costco.
The point of this is to make Kate look thrifty. If you believe she gives a sh*t about the "reclaimed" wood, I've got a bridge to sell you.
My point was, again, for the really slow sheep, that Kate tries to make it look like she's pinching pennies, when she's just finding something random to do for filming.
(What's next- build another outbuilding?)
The juxtaposition of this rich woman, on her vast compound, with her mani/pedi, fake bake and hairdresser-to-the-stars coiffing, manhandling a sander, is laughable.

Jeanne (#26), I'm sorry to hear about your financial and health struggles.

You mentioned the cereal exaggeration, and I remember another stat from an earlier episode which had me shaking my head. Maybe something about how many loaves of bread they ate daily? Whatever it was, it certainly didn't scan with
the tiny portions we saw TFW serving her kids.
Was it the first or second special where we saw one banana passed around for 6 babies to share?

LaLaLandNoMore said...

It's the "gratitude chip" that appears to be missing in Kate. No one I know would complain about not having enough or just having barely enough money and then hire a full-time nanny for kids ages almost 12 to almost 16. Nonsense, just nonsense. I, like many here, woke up and smelled the coffee years ago regarding the Gosselins. Fake, phony, ungrateful grifters to the core. Jon doesn't get a pass on this from me. Any man who would leave a good "State of PA" job to become a house husband is difficult to understand. If any family has 8 children to support, they should both be working full-time jobs. Period. Any sympathy I ever felt for them, left a long time ago. Another thing, I would imagine we could find that old wreck of a picnic table in the trash heap behind the barn. The boys probably had to drag it back there while the girls pointed and laughed. Just my opinion and I haven't heard or seen anything to help change it, ever.

I would love to see the methodology of those studies. It's just plain silly to assugn an arbitrary number as the happiness key when the cost of living varies so dramatically by location. It's a meaningless number without context. Someone making 75K in Los Angeles is in a completely different SES bracket than someone earning the same in rural Iowa.

It's because of the case being so famous. She was even out for 5 or 6 years early on because of a retrial and caused no problems. Once the brainwashing was over she wasn't a criminal. The Manson murders were so horrendous. I remember the movie, "Helter Skeltor" scared the living daylights out of me- the stuff of nightmares.
I do think that Manson was a very charismatic cult leader who recruited young and impressionable men and women to do his bidding.
Van Houten's case will be interesting to watch. I tend to believe that she has taken opportunities to better herself and earn the right to freedom for her remaining years.
It's hard to feel 100%, and say that with conviction, because she gave her victims no mercy, and their loved ones have, I'm sure, suffered all their days because of it.
OTOH, I can see how Van Houten was herself, a victim.

She knows the value of her nice things. Point is, the table is one of those things. I doubt she would want to do an episode sanding and sealing a table that was junk. She put it on her wish list with TLC. Just like the deck, the flower garden and even her sweet chicken coop. I wouldn't be surprised if we see her repaint the coop at some point.

Reclaimed wood might very well have been chemically treated as well. It might also have remains of LEAD PAINT on it.

You also want to be sure whoever built your piece knows how to evaluate the integrity of each piece of wood, making sure it's sturdy and safe, free of termites, lead and other dangers. You don't want to mess around.

I have a reclaimed wood bed, I'm not against reclaimed wood, but I wouldn't assume that reclaimed wood is safer than what you can get at Costco.

Do you mean like the pressure treated wood that the Crooked Houses are made from?
I mean, how much time have the kids been exposed to the chemicals while playing in those cramped quarters?

"Pressure treatment is a process that forces chemical preservatives into the wood. Wood is placed inside a closed cylinder, then vacuum and pressure are applied to force the preservatives into the wood. The real 4rmine (#81), I would say the difference
is that TFW usually comments on her upcoming birthday. She's talked about her birthday in episodes, and made quite the big fuss about
the big 4-0 last year. Fans have sent her gifts in the past. Her Twitter account generally
has a "coffee klatsch" vibe to it. I think that makes fans perceive her as a friend (some have made that abundantly clear). So when she doesn't make the effort to at least tweet a thank you to them, I think that is unkind. She encourages
them to live tweet during new episodes, to
generate some buzz and publicity (including
@TLC in the tweets), yet disappears for weeks
at a time when tweeting is inconvenient to her.

However, after the posting of links proving you wrong and that the table actually was made from barn wood, now that's a bad thing because it could have lead paint, chemicals, termites and mold.

I think you misunderstood. I never said reclaimed wood is a bad thing. I was responding to a poster who specifically said reclaimed wood is better than chemically treated wood from Costco. Not necessarily, I said. And that is because old wood can have a host of problem deep inside it, some obvious some not-so obvious.

I'm clearly not against reclaimed wood as my bed is reclaimed, made from a talented carpenter up in San Jose (got it on Etsy)--obviously I'm not against reclaimed wood.

What was said, is that not all reclaimed wood is better and that you need to make sure whoever made your piece knows what they're doing. I simply disgreed with the poster's blanket statement that reclaimed is "better"--has nothing to do with Kate and her table. This is what we do here, go off on interesting discussions that get away from the topic at hand, in this particular instance, about reclaimed.

It's not a double standard. Kate has actively engaged and built "relationships" with her fans on twitter, Jon, and some other celebs, do not. Kate has said very clearly they are her friends.

Some celebs just use social media to post PR announcements and leave it at that. That's Jon. I wouldn't expect those celebs to respond to every happy birthday either or to engage more intimatly at all. That's their choice to keep those boundaries, and I respect it.

I do expect though when a celeb does the opposite, and really works to engage and develop dialogues with their fans, that if they're going to suddenly cut that off they at least show them a little courtesy.

If Kate wants to create stricter boundaries on social media, where she makes it clear it's not going to be a girlfriend-like, intimate, chit-chat atmosphere, then I will cease having expectations she behave like a good friend with all those she has reached out to so actively. This is her own fault and she has no one but herself to blame. And it's obvious how hurt some of the fans are when she abandons them. I didn't see anyone butt-hurt over Jon keeping his social media presence guarded and strictly for PR, because that's how it's always been.

fidosmommy said...

Not to belabor the point, but here I go....

Wouldn't it have been an interesting tidbit of info if SOMEBODY on the episode had mentioned "this is the table Steve Thomas came to help build out of reclaimed barn wood" and maybe even showed a minute or two of (Jon-free) footage to refresh memories?

People have been all over Kate for not promoting her charities. I was raised to thank people for their kind words, and to put my whole heart and hard work into my charity work.

Fidosmommy (#98), interesting theory! I didn't watch the episode, so I can't weigh in.

And if it was yet another fake-out, then sure it matters. It came from TFW's own lips that her show is the "realest reality," when in fact she participated in a vow renewal to a man she no longer loved.

I think it comes down to Jon not using social media the same way Kate and other celebs use it.
Again, I do agree a "thanks" would have been nice for his birthday. But, I don't think he needs to mount a PR campaign for the local charity events he does.
It's just nice that he has decided to get back into the social fold where he grew up, instead of acting like he's stuck there, boo hoo, too many farms with hex signs, etc.

Has anyone seen the video of the 5-year old boy getting paddled at school? There is a whole lot of outrage over the footage that the mother took of her son receiving ONE paddle at the hands of the principal.
(the kid evidently spit)
The kid is screaming and squirming and begging his mother to save him from the pain, but she felt that if she interfered, the boy would get kicked out of school, and she'd go to jail.
Now, there is a history of absences here, but the footage is so hard to watch!
Can you imagine taking a hard, wooden spoon and hitting your little kids with it, and doing it as a matter of course?
This isn't discipline. It's abuse.

Kate had five more children, and to think that this happened right under our noses and we missed it!

Does anyone know if the Gosselins still have the crooked houses. It seems to me all eight are past the stage for playing in them. Since they were gifted, I think it would be a kind gesture if she donated them to, for instance, a local day care center. Knowing what we know about her she is more likely to put them on ebay though.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Exactly. Bottom line is that he doesn't NEED adoration, doesn't want it, doesn't expect it and doesn't lead anyone to believe that he is that person's best friend. That's just not him.

Kate uses the sheeple when she wants something, either to promote her show, or to find something for her, such as toys, a repairman, or whatever, and the fans are just too slow to realize it. Or if they do realize it, it doesn't matter to them because they think that she is grateful and it's their way to get close to a celebrity, even though it's a has-been. Little do they know that she would't give them the time of day if she ever came face to face with them. All of their loyality, if you can call it that, means nothing to her and yet they just keep hanging on.

Jon is just the opposite. He's someone with whom you'd like to hang out, have a burger and a beer, talk about anything and everything, and feel like you've known him forever. He makes you feel comfortable. That's just Jon.

&&&&

Well said.

You know, I do have different standards for the two of them when it comes to what I expect out of their social media. One standard is for Kate and any other celeb who have (falsely) led their fans into believing they are close friends, there for each other, have something special among themselves. And the other one is for Jon and the celebs who have kept social media guarded, professional, and set clear boundaries. I recall Jon many times being very firm about how he does not want people badgering him about his kids on his social media. He has set boundaries.

For the first set, I do expect them to treat fans like a good friend, as they have made it clear they are friends. That means thank you's for all the happy birthdays, responding to people who are trying to speak to you or have patiently asked you the same question many times (have you read my book???) and not disappearing for a month without so much as a smell ya later, then popping back in teasing about why you were gone.

For the second set, I expect nothing more than common courtesy when they do chime in on social media, and that's about it.

This is the thing, every celeb when they jump on social media can set their own terms. But once they open that gauntlet and decide it's going to be intimate and friend-like, then with that comes certain expectations. Don't like it, then start setting boundaries.

My kids always wanted a tree house which I think is cooler and more fun.

TLC stinks said...

I wonder how many of Kate's fans would be ok with their child getting paddled in school? Amazing that corporal punishment is ok for them with Kate wielding a wooden spoon or a hard cardboard roll but I bet they'd raise a stink about their child getting paddled in school. IMO, corporal punishment is inappropriate in school and in the home unless all other punishment has failed. As someone who was punished with a belt or switch as a child, it leaves a lasting psychological imprint. Then I was forced to stand in the corner with my nose to the wall until she felt I was sufficiently cowed. My mother was the enforcer and I was never close to her. I have to laugh about how she expects HER house to be filled with all eight kids, spouses and grandkids at holiday time. She says this stuff to make everyone believe what a great mom she is.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

TLC stinks (#120), TFW's Norman Rockwell fantasy of a houseful of grandchildren seems a bit delusional. A few of the 8 kids might move far away and never look back. A few might live near by, but want to spend most of their time with their spouses' families. A few might quickly create their own holiday traditions which only include their immediate families (that's what they're learning from Mom, isn't it?). And
who knows -- maybe some spouses will read their mother-in-law's journals, and never let TFW anywhere near their kids.

I've mentioned this before - I had a wonderful mother whom I loved deeply. One day, as an adult, I sat her down to actually tell her how grateful I was for her
and for the joys of being her daughter. It was a long speech, unrehearsed and straight from the heart.

I told her there were only 2 changes I would have made about my childhood. I told her spanking only served to make me withdrawn, not contrite. It really was a poor parenting choice for this particular daughter and I wished she could have seen that. The second thing? I wished she had a different teacher than the one who taught her to cook vegetables. She cooked them to mush. Every. Single. Time.

Count me among the anti-spankers and the anti-mushers.

I don't want to be argumentative, but I thought we did "have a problem" with how Kate interacts with fans ("think it unwise"). She doesn't know them in real life, and it's possible that a mentally unbalanced fan could become overattached to her. This could cause problems if they demanded more real life contact than Kate was willing to give, or than was safe for Kate and the kids.

I was thinking along the same lines.

Big box tables are usually 6'-7' long. The table from Steve Thomas was supposedly 12'. I didn't see a 12' long table being refinished on the recent episode. It looked standard size to me.

But thinking this thru, by my count she has at least 3 picnic tables. There's #1. a brand new table which sits next to the brand new gas grill on the brand new deck plus #2. the old picnic table (is this the one they refinished?) which sits next to the old gas grill on the covered patio directly underneath the new deck, plus #3. the 12' reclaimed wood table from Steve Thomas.

It makes sense. When the entire family is together, you use the largest table; if it's just six of them you use the middle size table; if it's an intimate picnic supper for two, you choose the smaller table. It's kind of like having three cars -- you pick the one that best fits the occasion. I'm still not convinced that's who he really is. I think it could have been a persona. It was just so over the top, if it's real, he needs psychological help.

Speaking of old articles, this is a synopsis of Robert's book, published in the Daily Mail.

Hope it works.

Cheryl and Tony should get together and compare their horror stories about which one of them had the worst partner, Kate or Ian!

Here's a dumb question. Why would Goody tweet a blackberry tequila recipe to Shawn Tuma?

The neighbors at Elizabeth town (?) witnessed Kate hitting the kids frequently. The pastor who wrote page after page begging Kate, Jon and TLC to "shut it down now" something like that. He said neighbors saw the toddlers cower when Kate screamed at them not knowing if they were going to be hit. I'll look for it.

&&&&&&&&&&

I remember when Kate and Jon lived in E-town, and Walt wrote that blog and it's been a long time since I re-read it, but I don't recall him saying that the neighbors witnessed physical abuse of those kids.

Kate tweeted a picture of Shoka, and a few minutes later Stale Cereal Lady was right there. She just wrote a book, "When I Lied," and here's the preview..."When Kate created her sexy online persona, “Lexi,” she never expected the lies to spin so far out of control." Kate? Lexi? Now where did she get those names? lol!

Nothing about abuse.

But from the time they moved into the neighborhood until the time they left, generous offers of help, meals, etc. were turned away. . . and usually not with even a polite “thank-you.” The stories are multitude. And, they are consistent. These offers were not given to celebrities, but to neighbors in need. Nobody in our neighborhood was starstruck. . . simply because these were neighbors and not stars. In addition, there was a growing awareness that something was just not right. One member of the marriage would walk the kids in their six-seat stroller and was willing to engage neighbors in friendly conversation. The other immediately developed a reputation for being rude, self-centered, and demanding. Those in our neighborhood who had known that person for years were not surprised. Sadly, the one who ruled the roost set the tone, and it wasn’t good. Eventually, we never saw the friendlier half of the couple....

...
For a minute, remove all the rumors and stories (many of which are true), and think only about how the family has chosen to present themselves. Think too about the fact that when the cameras are on, we usually put on our best smiles and best behavior. . . and then think – long and hard – about what that best behavior has been on this particular show. Then, imagine what life is like and how people act when the cameras aren’t rolling. After taking that all into consideration, we shouldn’t be surprised by the train wreck that’s taken the world by storm.

What I do recall from another neighbor was hearing Kate screaming at Jon and the kids. No idea where I read that as it was years ago.

Man, Kate take horrible photos! She has the newest (or close to it) IPhone, which takes awesome pics. Yet, most every photo is dreck!
This is about the third time she's just randomly popped back onto Twitter in as many months, and she received very little response.
I expect Kate will do her silly "tweet me for a possible/maybe/could happen but probably wont "follow", during her "live" shows, but I think she's lost the bulk of her followers.

Hello, everyone! Good to be back after a long absence (long story short: I have lupus. And lung, liver, and kidney damage as a result). Have apparently had it for awhile. How did I go for so long without knowing? Anyway, I am working toward getting stabilized.

Anyway, it will take awhile to get caught up on comments. I was delighted to see some people talking about orchids. I just mentioned to DH that I would like to try my hand at growing a few orchids, and then I log on and it's a recent topic of conversation! That's what I love about this blog--people have so much to share.

The E town neighbor who wrote that post on his blog (I think his name is Walt) was coming from a place of concern for the Gosselins as a family. He boldly wrote of his first-hand experiences and observations, and tried to reach out to Jon and Kate, and I believe also the millions of people who were tuning in, eager to watch the implosion progress week after week.
It never ceases to amaze me, the typical Christian knee-jerk reaction that these type of posts received.
"Throw the first stone, blah blah". How dare anyone criticize Kate and her Amazing Uterus! Kate was untouchable and Christians were so overly enamored with the fact that J+K chose not to reduce that they canonized Kate (completely ignoring the issue of putting her life and the lives of her unborn babies in danger), making her infallible.
Anyone, and I mean anyone, who spoke against J+K's decision to use their kids for fame and money was pounded.
People who accused Walt of using Kate for self-promotion couldn't have been more wrong. Walt said he was going to write the article because he wanted to speak out against what he saw was very wrong. And that's just what he did.

I do recall an article that talked at length about how disruptive filming was to the quiet little neighborhood where their house used to be, with the traffic, trucks in and out, all kinds of strange people there all the time. It seemed to be implying it got worse and worse every year and was at that point near constant. It really did a good job of describing the side of filming you don't see. But the kids see it, all the fuss, all the people. It just struck me as something so unnatural for a young child to be around at their own home all the time.

I've always wondered if moving was just as much about that, the angry neighbors who maybe even threatened to take them to the zoning board or something. It is no coincidence they moved to a much more rural neighborhood with a residence big enough to accommodate all of production on their private property without resorting to street parking. I think that was TLC's motivation behind the move even if Kate and Jon's was more to just get a swag house. It was cheaper for them to foot some of the bill on the house than have to pay off angry neighbors.

There was another expose article that mentioned their school by name, which I think upset people here. But it was another behind the scenes, insider article that was very interesting.

Thank you, Tucker's Mom and FlimsyFlamsy! I was wondering--since so many people post here--if anyone else here has SLE. This is all new to me, so am trying to learn as much as I can. I am on meds now, have had to make some lifestyle changes, and would love to hear what others who have it might advise. I have a lot that I still want to do with my life, so I need to get this under control ASAP.

FlimsyFlamsy,
The boys are doing great! The Dr sat us all down and explained what this is, what to expect in the future, and what they can do to help. And they have all been pitching in, helping out more, insisting that I rest. They are such an awesome bunch. How did I get so lucky?

I think Gladys might be gone. Goody is left holding down the fort.
Twitter tumbleweeds for the most part. It's like Kate have given up on her branding. In comparison, Amy Roloff continues to tweet and post Instagram pics, talks about their new season after "months of filming" (Amy is realistic with her fans about how grueling the filming and interview schedules are) and is jetting all over for engagements.
Kate's new season starts next week and not one word to promote it.

I got the impression that the goal was to build or buy a house that would contain the set, the crew and production capabilities (to almost be one-stop shopping, so to speak), in a secluded setting so Kate could work the kids to her heart's content without anyone realizing how all consuming pumping out 40-50 shows a year really was.
Also, the house had to have some sort of separate quarters for Jon. He was never part of Kate's "mine, all mine" plan.

Strange. TLC no longer has Kate+8 listed on April 26. They used to have a number of older episodes earlier in the day and then the new "10 year anniversary" episode that night. Now they are showing repeats of Dateline during the day and then two new episodes of Jill & Jessa and a new episode of Little People, Big World that night.

The only listings for Kate now are repeats on the 20th and 21st at 1:00 in the morning. I wonder if TLC kicked it down the road until they can get done editing the new specials they filmed about the Super Bowl and the New Orleans vacation.

As for Gladys,i'll wait and see if she saids anything for the kids birthday. If she is still MIA at that point then something had to of happened to her. There would be no reason for her to miss the 6 birthday even though she missed Kate's birthday which i felt was odd but for all we know, this could be the proof she's not just an obsess fan.

Thank you, Jamesvader1194 and Formerly Duped, I'm doing okay. Things were scary for awhile, but it's a relief to actually know what was wrong (not knowing is awful), and I stopped working and I'm taking better care of myself.

One thing to consider about the airing of the upcoming episodes--TLC seems to understand that K+8 needs a strong lead-in in order to pull off even mediocre ratings. It will never work as a stand-alone show. Perhaps they are re-shuffling the schedule in order to line it up with the kind of lead-in that it needs. It's like arranging life support for a TV show. The heyday of K+8 is long over, and it is going to take a lot of effort from here on out just to keep it going.

OT, sort of, regarding the bathroom issue, from our local news:

LANCASTER, Pa. —Police have arrested a man after they say he held a cell phone over a bathroom stall at an area Sheetz store.

It happened at the Sheetz located at 1180 Manheim Pike in Lancaster.

A 10-year-old girl was inside the stall of the women's bathroom and reported the activity to her mother, who was waiting outside of the restroom. Employees told police the man, 19-year-old James Thomas Shoemaker, had been in the bathroom for about an hour.

When an officer arrived, he found Shoemaker in the bathroom. The officer determined that Shoemaker had intentionally went into the women's bathroom and used his phone to access pornographic images on his web browser.

Police say Shoemaker then used his phone’s camera to look over the stall to see into the adjoining stall that was occupied by the victim. The suspect also used his phone/camera to look under the stall door to see if anyone else was in the women's bathroom.

Shoemaker gave consent for officers to examine his phone, which is currently being forensically analyzed. As of this time, no pictures of the victim have been located on the phone."

Shoemaker, of Quarryville, has been arrested and charged with invasion of privacy.

Yep. It was a zoning issue, in addition to her wanting privacy, and lots of land as far as the eye could see.

Layla, well wishes for you! A friend of mine was diagnosed with lupus. She's apparently had it for quite some time. Symptoms first appeared eight years ago and they finally figured out what it is, after exhaustive testing. She's doing great now...up and around and is her old self. Be well!
